Abstract

Abstract The spread of blast dust throughout the tunnel becomes a common problem in drill and blast tunneling,the key to breaking through the problem is the creation of a dust control area on the working face.In view of this key problem, a wet string grid dust removal crawler vehicle was developed, the power of the vehicle came from the diesel generator, and further, the air cooler of the diesel generator was used to generate airflow, and the suction process formed by the on-board axial flow fan was coupled to create a dust control area of the working face after blasting.The results show that when the frequency of the axial flow fan is adjusted to 30 Hz, the airflow speed of the wet chord grid section reaches 3.34 m/s, and the dust removal efficiency is the highest, with a value of 94.3%.Compared with the non-use of the dust removal vehicle, when the air outlet of the air cooler is front, horizontal front, horizontal rear, the dust concentration is reduced by 74.37, 92.39 and 50.53%.Finally, the optimized wet grid dust removal crawler was installed in the Dading tunnel, and the actual dust reduction efficiency was about 78.49%. The results obtained provide an important technical way to improve the working environment of the drilling and blasting construction tunnel.

4. Seasonal variations and water chemical control mechanism of water quality in a suburban river near a coal city: a case study in the Xinbian River of Suzhou City, Anhui Province, China

Abstract

To study the seasonal change rules of water quality indicators and water chemical control mechanisms in the nearby city river Xinbian River, in Suzhou City, Anhui Province, China, nine points were selected and periodically sampled for 12 months. Totally 108 water samples were collected, and basic physical–chemical indicators and routine ions (e.g., Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, SO42−, Cl−, F−, NO3−, CO32−, and HCO3−) were measured. Piper diagram, Gibbs diagram, and ion ratio method were used. The result shows that the seasonal and upstream-to-downstream variations in pH were less varied, whereas the fluctuation in dissolved oxygen was large. Four ions, namely, SO42-, F−, Cl−, and Na+ generally first decreased overall and then changed from spring to winter. The maximum contents of SO42- (406.03 mg/L), Cl− (250.22 mg/L), and Na+ (269.99 mg/L) in single water samples appeared at the S9 sampling point (Suzhou control gate) in March 2020. The dominant hydrochemical types in summer were Na–Ca–HCO3 and Na–Mg–SO4, while Na–Mg–SO4 and Na–Mg–HCO3 were the main hydrochemical types in the other seasons. The control factors of water chemical composition vary according to the season. However, rock weathering (e.g., silicate dissolution) is the dominant control factor of water chemistry in the studied river section. HIGHLIGHTS The annual water quality indicators of a proposed surface water source in a severely water-deficient city were tested.; The seasonal change characteristics of water quality indicators and their control mechanisms were revealed.; Both natural and human factors that affect water quality have been comprehensively analyzed.;

ObjectiveThe aim of the study was to develop a prediction nomogram based on clinical factors to assess the risk of postoperative complications in children with congenital choledochal cyst.MethodsThe clinical data from 131 children who underwent choledochal cyst resection and Roux-en-Y hepaticojejunostomy in our hospital between January 2016 and December 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. The general information, clinical symptoms, procedure, biochemical indicators, and imaging data were recorded. A prolonged hospital stay induced by postoperative complications or a follow-up over 6 months was assessed as the event outcome. A logistics regression analysis was performed to screen for risk factors with statistical significance in inducing postoperative complications. Then, with the dataset split into the training group and internal validation group, the nomogram for the prediction of postoperative complications was developed based on a computer algorithm. Abstract

Delamination is a common defect in carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) during the molding process. Accurately understanding the formation and evolution mechanisms of drilling damage in CFRP with delamination defects is helpful for effectively suppressing drilling defects with delamination. In this study, a macro-micro finite element model (FEM) of CFRP with prefabricated delamination defects during drilling is established to simulate and analyze the damage formation and evolution behavior. The circular polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) films are employed to simulate the delamination defects in CFRP. These samples with different sizes of prefabricated delamination defects are prepared for the drilling experiments. The results show that the maximum errors of the thrust force and the exit damage factor between the simulation and experiments are 8.75% and 4.2% respectively, indicating good reliability of the simulation model. Under the condition of CFRP with delamination defects, as the size of the delamination defects increases, the maximum thrust force decreases, while the maximum delamination propagation length and exit damage increase. Compared to the case without delamination defects, when the delamination diameter is 7 mm, the delamination propagation percentage and the maximum stress in CFRP increase by 52.17% and 155.4% respectively, and the maximum increment of the exit delamination damage factor is 38%.

Human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) play a critical role in pulp tissue repair, but their differentiative ability could be inhibited by the potential infection and inflammatory response of the exposed pulp. Therefore, inflammatory regulation and differentiated promotion of hDPSCs are both essential for preserving living pulp teeth. In this study, we constructed a functional dental pulp-capping hydrogel by loading cerium oxide nanoparticles (CNPs) and dentin matrix protein-1 (DMP1) into an injectable Fmoc–triphenylalanine hydrogel (Fmoc-phe3 hydrogel) as CNPs/DMP1/Hydrogel for in situ drugs delivery. With a view to long-term storage and release of CNPs (anti-inflammatory and antioxidant) to regulate the local inflammatory environment and DMP1 to promote the regeneration of dentin. Results of CCK-8, LDH release, hemolysis, and Live/Dead assessment of cells demonstrated the good biocompatibility of CNPs/DMP1/Hydrogel. The levels of alkaline phosphatase activity, quantification of the mineralized nodules, expressions of osteogenic genes and proteins demonstrated CNPs/DMP1/Hydrogel could protect the activity of hDPSCs’ osteogenic/dentinogenic differentiation by reducing the inflammation response via releasing CNPs. The therapy effects were further confirmed in rat models, CNPs/DMP1/Hydrogel reduced the necrosis rate of damaged pulp and promoted injured pulp repair and reparative dentin formation with preserved vital pulps. In summary, the CNPs/DMP1/Hydrogel composite is an up-and-coming pulp-capping material candidate to induce reparative dentin formation, as well as provide a theoretical and experimental basis for developing pulp-capping materials.

AbstractUsing Mendelian Randomization (MR) and large-scale Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS) data, this study aimed to investigate the potential causative relationship between testosterone and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) levels and the onset of several cancers, including pathway enrichment analyses of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with cancer allowed for a comprehensive bioinformatics approach, which offered a deeper biological understanding of these relationships. The results indicated that increased testosterone levels in women were associated with a higher risk of breast and cervical cancers but a lower risk of ovarian cancer. Conversely, increased testosterone was linked to lower stomach cancer risk for men, whereas high SHBG levels were related to decreased risks of breast and prostate cancers. The corresponding genes of the identified SNPs, as revealed by pathway enrichment analysis, were involved in significant metabolic and proliferative pathways. These findings emphasize the need for further research into the biological mechanisms behind these associations, paving the way for potential targeted interventions in preventing and treating these cancers.

10. Sex difference in response to non-small cell lung cancer immunotherapy: an updated meta-analysis

Abstract

Background Studying sex differences in the efficacy of immunotherapy may contribute to the practice of the precision medicine, especially in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), a kind of cancer with sexual bimorphism.Methods Published randomized controlled trials (RCTs), published by PubMed, Medline, Embase, and Scopus, before 15 June 2022, testing immunotherapy (CTLA-4 or PD-1/L1 inhibitor alone, combination or with chemotherapy) versus non-immunotherapy (receiving chemotherapy or placebo only) were included to assess different efficacy between males and females. The primary endpoint was overall survival (OS). This meta-analysis was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42022298439).Results Sixteen RCTs, involving 10,155 patients with advanced NSCLC, was collected in this meta-analysis. The pooled HR comparing immunotherapy vs non-immunotherapy were 0.76 (95%CI 0.71–0.81) for males and 0.74 (95%CI 0.63–0.87) for females. The pooled HRs comparing immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) plus chemotherapy versus chemotherapy were 0.79 (95%CI 0.70–0.89) for males and 0.63 (95%CI 0.42–0.92) for females. The pooled HRs comparing ICIs versus chemotherapy were 0.74 (95%CI 0.67–0.81) for males and 0.83 (95%CI 0.73–0.95) for females. In squamous NSCLC, the pooled HRs comparing immunotherapy vs non-immunotherapy were 0.73 (95%CI 0.58–0.91) for males and 0.74 (95%CI 0.37–1.48) for females. In non-squamous NSCLC, the pooled HRs comparing immunotherapy versus non-immunotherapy were 0.62 (95%CI 0.71–0.94) for males and 0.59 (95%CI 0.39–0.89) for females.Conclusion Compared to chemotherapy, immunotherapy can improve the prognosis of patients with advanced NSCLC. Meanwhile, there are sex differences in the efficacy of immunotherapy.KEY MESSAGECompared to chemotherapy, immunotherapy can improve the prognosis of patients with advanced NSCLC.The most interesting thing in this study is that immunotherapy showed significant sex differences in the treatment of squamous NSCLC.

Abstract

Large quantities of abandoned marine soft soil are generated from coastal engineering which cannot be directly utilized for construction without modification. The utilization of traditional binders to modify abandoned marine soft soil yields materials with favorable mechanical properties and cost efficiency. However, the production of traditional binders like cement leads to environmental pollution. This study uses a CGF all-solid-waste binder (abbreviated as CGF) composed of industrial solid waste materials such as calcium carbide residue (CCR), ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS), and fly ash (FA), developed by our research team, for the modification of abandoned marine soft soil (referred to as modified soil). It is noteworthy that the marine soft soil utilized in this study was obtained from the coastal area of Jiaozhou Bay, Qingdao, China. Physical property tests, compaction tests, and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) tests were conducted on the modified soil. The investigation analyzed the effects of binder content, compaction delay time, and curing time on the physical, compaction, and mechanical properties of CGF-modified soil and cement-modified soil. Additionally, microscopic experimental results were integrated to elucidate the mechanical improvement mechanisms of CGF on abandoned marine soft soil. The results show that after modification with binders, the water content of abandoned marine soft soil significantly decreases due to both physical mixing and chemical reactions. With an increase in compaction delay time, the impact of chemical reactions on reducing water content gradually surpasses that of physical mixing, and the plasticity of the modified soil notably modifies. The addition of binders results in an increase in the optimum moisture content and a decrease in the maximum dry density of CGF-modified soil, while the optimum moisture content decreases and the maximum dry density increases for cement-modified soil. Moreover, with an increase in binder content, the compaction curve of CGF-modified soil gradually shifts downward and to the right, while for cement-modified soil, it shifts upward and to the left. Additionally, the maximum dry density of both CGF-modified and cement-modified soils shows a declining trend with the increase in compaction delay time, while the optimum moisture content of CGF-modified soil increases and that of cement-modified soil exhibits a slight decrease. The strength of compacted modified soil is determined by the initial moisture ratio, binder content, compaction delay time, and curing time. The process of CGF modification of marine soft soil in Jiaozhou Bay can be delineated into stages of modified soil formation, formation of compacted modified soil, and curing of compacted modified soil. The modification mechanisms primarily involve the alkali excitation reaction of CGF itself, pozzolanic reaction, ion-exchange reaction, and carbonization reaction. Through quantitative calculations, the carbon footprint and unit strength cost of CGF are both significantly lower than those of cement.

Abstract

In order to realize the resource utilization of solid waste and improve the tensile strength and toughness of soil, CCR-GGBS-FA all-solid-waste binder (CGF) composed of general industrial solid waste calcium carbide residue (CCR), ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) and fly ash (FA) was used instead of cement and combined with polypropylene fiber to strengthen the silty soil taken from Dongying City, China. An unconfined compressive strength test (UCS test) and a uniaxial tensile test (UT test) were carried out on 10 groups of samples with five different fiber contents to uncover the effect of fiber content on tensile and compressive properties, and the reinforcement mechanism was studied using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) test. The test results show that the unconfined compressive strength, the uniaxial tensile strength, the deformation modulus, the tensile modulus, the fracture energy and the residual strength of fiber-reinforced CGF-solidified soil are significantly improved compared with nonfiber-solidified soil. The compressive strength and the tensile strength of polypropylene-fiber-reinforced CGF-solidified soil reach the maximum value when the fiber content is 0.25%, as the unconfined compressive strength and the tensile strength are 3985.7 kPa and 905.9 kPa, respectively, which are 116.60% and 186.16% higher than those of nonfiber-solidified soil, respectively. The macro–micro tests identify that the hydration products generated by CGF improve the compactness through gelling and filling in solidified soil, and the fiber enhances the resistance to deformation by bridging and forming a three-dimensional network structure. The addition of fiber effectively improves the toughness and stiffness of solidified soil and makes the failure mode of CGF-solidified soil transition from typical brittle failure to plastic failure. The research results can provide a theoretical basis for the application of fiber-reinforced CGF-solidified soil in practical engineering.

Abstract

Urbanization has significantly changed thermal environments and vegetation phenology. However, the effects of spatially different land surface temperatures (LST) on vegetation phenology, rather than differences between urban areas and rural areas, remain unclear. In this study, four cities with similar vegetation types located in temperate monsoon climate zones were selected to map vegetation phenological metrics and discuss their responses to spatially heterogeneous LST within urban areas. First, Sentinel 2-A and 2-B data were used to estimate phenological metrics by combining Savitzky–Golay filtering, and Landsat 8 TIRS data was used to obtain LST. Second, buffer zones (from the urban center to the urban edge at 1 km intervals) were used to extract the averaged phenological metrics and LST. The response of the phenological metrics to LST from the urban center to the urban edge was then analyzed. Results show that spatial differences in LST and vegetation phenology exist inside urban regions as well as between urban and peri-urban areas. In addition, the response of phenology to LST within urban areas is also obvious. SOS is negatively related to spring LST from the urban center to the urban edge, whereas EOS is positively related to autumn LST.

Getting information on evaporation is important for water resource protection and managing regional enclosed waterbodies. Some lake water samples were collected in May and June from a representative enclosed waterbody – the Pearl Lake, Suzhou, China – and the hydrogen and oxygen isotopes determined. Most samples taken in June have higher δ18O and δD values than those in May, indicating that there are differences between the intensity of evaporation of May and June. This was further confirmed by the water samples’ d-excess values, which were below the meteoric line. However, the variations of d-excess value have been shown to be influenced by source moistures or evaporation processes, which were controlled by the local environment, e.g., whether the water was shaded or not. The residual water quantities calculated were 53 to 63% and 49 to 56% for May and June, respectively, relative to the initial water, indicating that about 5% of the water evaporated between 5 May and 5 June.

Abstract Introduction The volume of the striatal structures has been associated with disease progression in individuals with Huntington's disease (HD) from North America, Europe, and Australia. However, it is not known whether the gray matter (GM) volume in the striatum is also sensitive in differentiating vulnerability from disease manifestation in HD families from a South‐American region known to have high incidence of the disease. In addition, the association of enlarged brain perivascular spaces (PVS) with cognitive, behavioral, and motor symptoms of HD is unknown. Materials and Methods We have analyzed neuroimaging indicators of global atrophy, PVS burden, and GM tissue volume in the basal ganglia and thalami, in relation to behavioral, motor, and cognitive scores, in 15 HD patients with overt disease manifestation and 14 first‐degree relatives not genetically tested, which represent a vulnerable group, from the region of Magdalena, Colombia. Results Poor fluid intelligence as per the Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices was associated with global brain atrophy (p = 0.002) and PVS burden (p ≤ 0.02) in HD patients, where the GM volume in all subcortical structures, with the exception of the right globus pallidus, was associated with motor or cognitive scores. Only the GM volume in the right putamen was associated with envy and MOCA scores (p = 0.008 and 0.015 respectively) in first‐degree relatives. Conclusion Striatal GM volume, global brain atrophy and PVS burden may serve as differential indicators of disease manifestation in HD. The Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices could be a cognitive test worth to consider in the differentiation of vulnerability versus overt disease in HD.

26. Remodeling Periodontal Osteoimmune Microenvironment Through MAPK/NFκB Phosphorylation Pathway of Macrophage via Intelligent ROS-scavenging

Abstract

Periodontitis is an inflammatory disorder which leads to the defect of tooth-supporting tissue, especially in alveolar bone. During this process, the polarization behavior of macrophages affects immune inflammation and bone regeneration in which reactive oxygen species(ROS) play an essential role. ROS level should be regulated to the physiological level to protect stem cells from the inflammatory immune microenvironment. Our previous study constructed a ROS-responsive nanoplatform (Pssl-NAC), which possessed ROS-responsive antioxidative effect and could be potentially applied in periodontitis. However, the connection among bone regeneration, inflammation and oxidative stress remained in osteoimmune regulation is not clear. To further investigate the mechanism of the way how Pssl-NAC works in the treatment of periodontitis would be meaningful. Here, we investigated the effect of PssL-NAC in the regulation of the osteoimmune microenvironment through macrophage polarization. Results show PssL-NAC regulated the macrophage polarization direction in an inflammatory environment by maintaining an appropriate level of intracellular ROS, in which the MAPK/NFκB phosphorylation pathway is particularly important. In the macrophage-hPDLSCs co-culture system, PssL-NAC treatment significantly enhanced the osteogenic differentiation of hPDLSCs. In vivo experiment further confirmed the M2 macrophages increased in the periodontal tissue of rats, and the expression of iNOS and p65 decreased after PssL-NAC treatment. In conclusion, PssL-NAC regulates the osteoimmune microenvironment and protects stem cells from oxidative stress injury for bone regeneration, which provides a strategy for the treatment of periodontitis.

Abstract

This study shows the application of microwave sintering (MS) on preparing NbC–10Ni and NbC–12Ni cermets, as well as the effect of its microstructure, phase formation, and mechanical properties. Results indicated that NbC–Ni cermets with a fine and uniform structure can be obtained by MS in a relatively short time. And the sintering temperature greatly influenced the microstructure and mechanical properties of NbC–Ni cermets, whereas the effect of dwell time is relatively small. With the increase of the sintering temperature, the microstructure of NbC–Ni cermets experienced sintering densification and grain growth. The strength and toughness increased first and then decreased, and the hardness increased with the increase of sintering temperature. According to the comprehensive mechanical properties, the optimized sintering process is 1,390°C and the dwell time is 15 min. At this time, no new phase formed, but the diffraction peak of the Ni phase shifted. Through analysis, it is found that the improvement mechanisms for comprehensive mechanical properties of NbC–Ni cermets mainly include grain refinement, crack deflection and bridging, and energy absorption of the ductile phase of Ni.

Abstract

Carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) parts are prone to forming defects during machining, so their applications are limited in many fields. In recent years, longitudinal-torsional ultrasonic vibration assisted drilling (LTUVD) has been attracting increasing attention due to its broad application prospect in CFRP machining. In this paper, both theoretical analysis and experimental research was conducted to reveal the influence mechanism of longitudinal-torsional vibration on CFRP drilling process. The movement characteristics, and the forces acting on the tool of longitudinal-torsional vibration in LTUVD process were studied theoretically. The analysis shows that the unique movement mode and force state of the tool in LTUVD process can effectively reduce the mean thrust force and machining defects. LTUVD experiments were carried out to verify the theoretical analysis. The experimental results showed that the existence of longitudinal torsional vibration changes the movement mode and force state of conventional drilling (CD) and reduces the mean thrust of LTUVD by 34.7%. Under different fiber orientation angles, the unique movement and force of LTUVD change the stress state and material removal mode of CFRP during CD processing. The hole wall morphology of LTUVD was better than that of CD. The comprehensive damage factor of LTUVD was decreased by 18.83%.

Abstract

Tool structure plays an important role in CFRP/titanium alloy (Ti) stacks drilling. The purpose of this paper is to study the performance of drills with different main cutting edge structures in CFRP/Ti stacks drilling. The effects of the main cutting edge structure on thrust force, chip morphology, interface damage and burr are analyzed. The results show that the interface damage is the least after candle stick drill drilling, because the outer corner tip structure can remove part of heat that left on the machined surface in the cutting stage of the main cutting edge. Compared with the other two kinds of drill bits, the height of burr produced by candle stick drill at titanium alloy layer is the smallest. The reason is that outer corner tip structure of the candle stick drill can counteract part of the radial cutting force which produced by the main cutting edge, and push the material inside to facilitate material removal. The outer corner structure of the drill bit has an important influence on the thrust force, the interface damage and the exit burr, so the special drill design for CFRP/Ti stacks must focus on the outer corner structure.

Abstract

Human-derived pulp stem cells play key roles during dentinogenesis. Erythropoietin is reportedly involved in osteoblastogenesis and facilitates bone formation. However, the mechanism is still unknown. This research was to study the potential of Erythropoietin in enhancing odontoblastic differentiation of human-derived pulp stem cells and to determine the underlying mechanism.The human-derived pulp stem cells were treated with Erythropoietin, EphB4 inhibitor, and MAPK inhibitors, and the odontoblastic differentiation was measured by ALP staining, ALP activity assay, alizarin red S staining and their quantitative analysis, and RT-qPCR of DSPP, DMP1, OCN, and RUNX2. The direct pulp capping model was established to evaluate the formation of tertiary dentin after treatment with Erythropoietin. Western blot assay was conducted to assess relevant protein expressions in the phosphorylated EphB4 and MAPK pathway.The results showed that Erythropoietin promoted odontoblastic differentiation of human-derived pulp stem cells at 20 U/ml. Erythropoietin induced tertiary dentin formation in vivo. The potential mechanism of this was upregulating phosphorylated EphB4 and phosphorylated MAPK; furthermore, this effect could be decreased by EphB4 inhibitors, which inhibited MAPK phosphorylation. Blockage of MAPK pathways attenuated human-derived pulp stem cells odontoblastic differentiation, suggesting that MAPK pathways are involved.Erythropoietin induced tertiary dentin formation in vivo. Abstract

In order to reduce the damage during drilling of CFRP/titanium alloy (Ti) stacks, a machining method of pilot hole with liquid nitrogen cooling (P_hole+LN) was proposed, and the underlying mechanisms of the new method were studied. In this paper, four kinds of drilling conditions were compared, such as P_hole+LN, pilot hole, liquid nitrogen cooling, and traditional dry drilling. The P_hole+LN condition produced the smallest thrust force in CFRP and Ti layer, formed discontinuous titanium alloy chips, and could effectively reduce the interface damage. Therefore, the method of P_hole+LN is suitable for drilling CFRP/Ti stacks.

Abstract

Silicon carbide particulate reinforced aluminum matrix composites (SiCp/Al) have received considerable attention in many engineering applications. However, the existence of dispersing SiC particles leads to particularly vulnerable edge quality of SiCp/Al composites in machining. It is very significant to improve the edge defects of SiCp/Al composites by optimizing the tool geometry. Cutting tool nose radius mainly determines the machining performance. Therefore, the effects of tool nose radius on the chip topography, cutting force, and edge geometry in face and dry milling of 20% SiCp/Al composites were investigated in the current work. Experiments were conducted with tool nose radius of 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2 mm. The results showed that the shorter and wider chips were found with the increment in tool nose radius. It was also observed that the cutting force increased with the increment in tool nose radius. Based on the material removal mechanism with different tool nose radius, the feature maps of edge defects in SiCp/Al composites were established and studied. It was found that the outer and inner edge quality of the materials was improved with the increase of tool nose radius.

Abstract

Surface texturing on cutting tools has a great influence on reducing the friction force between tool and chip interfaces. In this study, a grinding method was developed to fabricate micro-groove textures on cutting tools using a special diamond grinding wheel on the tool rake face. A comparative experiment was done using a laser and other grinding method to fabricate micro-grooves. The developed grinding method does not produce harmful gases, it is environmentally friendly, and it fabricates groove textures with high efficiency and quality. Various micro-grooves with depths of 30–90 µm, groove pitches of 0.5–1 mm, and groove angles of 30–60o were made on the rake faces of non-coated end-mill tools using the developed grinding method. Milling experiments on aluminum alloy (Al6061-T6) and tool steel (SKD11) with non-water-soluble coolant were carried out using the textured tools, and the cutting force and tool wear were investigated. In most cases, the cutting force produced by the micro-grooved tools is significantly reduced. In addition, the wear resistance of the micro-groove cutting tool is better than that of a conventional cutting tool, and there is no chipping.

Abstract

Carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) is used widely in many industries. During drilling CFRP, exit drill-induced defects such as burrs and delamination are easy to occur. In the existing model, the crack zone is assumed as a circle or an ellipse, and concrete forming process of the delamination and the burrs does not be truly involved. In this study, the formation mechanisms of the delamination and the burrs are analyzed based on the analytical model and the experimental observation. The results indicate that the critical thrust force only reflects the vulnerability of the crack, but cannot determine the size of the crack. The critical deflection of the fibers tip corresponding to the interlaminar crack extension point determines the size of crack. The burrs appear in four fundamental types.

Abstract

Invasive flora species can positively and negatively impact the pollination rates of native flora. Previous studies established that the plant pollinator networks within invaded systems are highly complex and variable, and can be influenced by the proximity and abundance of invasive species. In this study, we aimed to understand if the proximity, abundance, and removal of invasive Hirschfeldia incana positively or negatively affected the pollination rate of two native coastal scrub species, Eriogonum fasciculatum and Eriophyllum staechadifolium. We found that the removal of invasive Hirschfeldia incana can have a short-term positive effect on the pollinator visitation rates of native flora, while the effects of proximity and abundance remain variable. Knowing more about these variable changes and the positive effect of invasive species removal on pollination has implications for the restoration and management of invaded ecosystems., CEC Research, Vol. 6, Issue 2

44. Cooling Effect of Urban Blue and Green Spaces: A Case Study of Changsha, China

Abstract

The cooling effects of blue–green spaces on the urban heat island effect are complex and different. The purpose of this study is to simulate how the cooling effect of blue–green space changes with its size and shape. The cooling effects of 53 green patches and 28 water bodies in Changsha were extracted based on Landsat images. A surface fitting model was used to quantitatively reveal the relationship between the cooling effect of blue–green space and its size and shape. The results show that the cooling effects of blue–green spaces were enhanced with the increasing size, and then would become stable after a certain range (threshold). Certain thresholds were identified between the blue and green space areas (2.98 ha and 3.15 ha, respectively) and the cooling distance, and between the blue and green space areas (4.84 ha and 4.92 ha, respectively) and the cooling magnitude. In addition, the green space with an area of 9.08 ha and landscape shape index (LSI) of 2.97 could achieve a better cooling distance (413.46 m); and the blue space with an area of 29.4 ha and LSI of 1.75 could achieve a better cooling magnitude (5.17 °C). These findings provide useful guidelines for urban planning and improving urban livability in other regions with terrain and climate conditions similar to Changsha.

Abstract

Silicon carbide particulate reinforced aluminum (SiCp/Al) matrix composites play an important role in aviation, aerospace, electronics, automobile, and other fields due to their outstanding mechanical properties. However, the existence of reinforcing SiC particles leads to poor cutting performance, terrible surface quality, and severe tool wear of SiCp/Al composites. In this study, a series of experiments were carried out with an ultrasonic vibration–assisted milling (UVAM) experimental device to study the effect of amplitude on the machinability of 20% SiCp/Al composites from four aspects: cutting force, surface roughness, surface morphology, and chip morphology. The results showed that it had a great influence on cutting force, surface roughness, surface morphology, and chips when the amplitude increased to 3 μm. The surface of workpiece material deteriorated rapidly and presented the fragmentation. In addition, a large number of micro-cracks and particle bulges appeared on the machined surface. It was suggested that the amplitude below 5 μm had a negative impact on the milling surface quality of 20% SiCp/Al composites, and the amplitude of 3 μm was considered as a critical value.

Abstract

At present, the problems that need to be solved urgently in CFRP drilling are delamination and tool wear, which are closely related to the distribution of cutting force on the cutting edge. The aim of this paper is to present a method to analyze the cutting force distribution on the main cutting edge of the drill. This method applies to the analysis of the drilling performance of double point angle (DPA) drill and to optimize the step drill structure for CFRP drilling. Both of these applications prove the correctness of the analysis method. According to the calculation model of the rake angle of the main cutting edge of the twist drill and the cutting force prediction model, the distribution model of the cutting force on the main cutting edge is established. This method reveals the basic reason why the thrust force increases linearly when a single main cutting edge cuts into the workpiece. In the process of analyzing the drilling performance of the DPA drill, the edge force coefficient is used to represent the thrust force, and the application environment of the drill with a different structure is analyzed. Based on the distribution characteristics of the axial force on the main cutting edge, the step ratio of the step drill is optimized. This method can optimize the step ratio of the step drill. This method can be employed to optimize the step ratio of any structure step drill.

Abstract

The control of hole exit damage and hole wall quality poses a considerable challenge during the drilling of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP). This study aims to study the effect of the cutting edge type on the aforementioned issues. First, a comparative study between hole exit damage caused by a twist drill and a double-point angle drill was conducted to investigate the influences of the chisel, principal, and secondary cutting edges on hole exit damage. The maximum damage ring caused by the double-point angle drill is smaller than that caused by the twist drill because the drop speed of the cutting force in the secondary cutting edge drill during the exit stage of the double-point angle drill is less than that of the twist drill. Then, the double-point angle drill was used to determine the effects of tool wear on thrust force and hole wall damage. Outer corner wear and flank wear were investigated, and hole wall damage mechanisms were discussed. The damage of missing fibers does not worsen with an increase in tool wear, but the damage of fiber pullout becomes more serious due to increased cutting force. Consequently, a double-point angle drill bit is preferable for drilling holes on CFRP.

Abstract

Accurate exit-delamination morphology (i.e., shape and size) is of great significance both to evaluate and to control for the delamination during the drilling of carbon fiber-reinforced plastics. However, the morphology of the exit delamination in different fiber orientations is still difficult to precisely predict. In this paper, a theoretical model is established based on the classical bending theory of beam and the linear elastic fracture mechanics for determining the exit-delamination morphology. Based on this theoretical model, the accurate exit-delamination morphology can be precisely predicted. The results show that the exit-delamination zone is near to the elliptical shape, and its size decreases with the increasing of the cutting speed but increases with the increasing of the feed speed. Both the Zhang model and the beam theory model can predict the exit determination morphology. The beam theory model can reflect effectively the influences of the cutting speed and the feed speed on the exit delamination.

Abstract

This paper focuses on finding a suitable drill bit for drilling Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP). The drilling characteristics of the dagger drill, the double point angle drill, and the candle stick drill are studied. The results show that the side edge has poor ability to remove burrs, and the tip structure of the outer corner of the candle stick drill can greatly reduce the entry damage. However, the outer corner small tip structure of the candle stick drill cannot effectively remove the uncut fiber around θ = 0° of hole exit. The long secondary cutting edge of the dagger drill makes a small thrust force at the drilling exit stage and reduces the dropping speed of the thrust force, leading a lower impact on the laminate bottom. Then, a new tool is developed for drilling CFRP based on the advantages of the three kinds of drill bits. The drill has a long secondary cutting edge, a small tip diameter and a small tip structure of the outer corner. And its drilling characteristics are analyzed. The result shows that the new compound drill bit can effectively remove fibers and reduce thrust force at the drilling exit stage, form burr-free and small delamination hole. The drill reduces the waste of CFRP in manufacturing process since the exit damage is reduced substantially, which is in line with the concept of green manufacturing.
