Abstract Background The stria vascularis (SV), located in the lateral wall of the cochlea, maintains cochlear fluid homeostasis and mechanoelectrical transduction (MET) activity required for sound wave conduction. The pathogenesis of a number of human inheritable deafness syndromes, age related hearing loss, drug-induced ototoxicity and noise-induced hearing loss results from the morphological changes and functional impairments in the development of the SV. In this study, we investigate the implications of intercellular communication within the SV in the pathogenesis of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). We aim to identify commonly regulated signaling pathways using publicly available single-cell transcriptomic sequencing (scRNA-seq) datasets. Methods We analyzed scRNA-seq data, which was derived from studying the cochlear SV in mice with SNHL compared to normal adult mice. After quality control and filtering, we obtained the major cellular components of the mouse cochlear SV and integrated the data. Using Seurat's FindAllMarkers and FindMarkers packages, we searched for novel conservative genes and differential genes. We employed KEGG and GSEA to identify molecular pathways that are commonly altered among different types of SNHL. We utilized pySCENIC to discover new specific regulatory factors in SV subpopulation cells. With the help of CellChat, we identified changes in subpopulation cells showing similar trends across different SNHL types and their alterations in intercellular communication pathways. Results Through the analysis of the integrated data, we discovered new conserved genes to SV specific cells and identified common downregulated pathways in three types of SNHL. The enriched genes for these pathways showing similar trends are primarily associated with the Electron Transport Chain, related to mitochondrial energy metabolism. Using the CellChat package, we further found that there are shared pathways in the incoming signaling of specific intermediate cells in SNHL, and these pathways have common upstream regulatory transcription factor of Nfe2l2. Combining the results from pySCENIC and CellChat, we predicted the transcription factor Nfe2l2 as an upstream regulatory factor for multiple shared cellular pathways in IC. Additionally, it serves as an upstream factor for several genes within the Electron Transport Chain. Conclusion Our bioinformatics analysis has revealed that downregulation of the mitochondrial electron transport chain have been observed in various conditions of SNHL. E2f1, Esrrb, Runx1, Yy1, and Gata2 could serve as novel important common TFs regulating the electron transport chain. Adm has emerged as a potential new marker gene for intermediate cells, while Itgb5 and Tesc show promise as potential new marker genes for marginal cells in the SV. These findings offer a new perspective on SV lesions in SNHL and provide additional theoretical evidence for the same drug treatment and prevention of different pathologies of SNHL.

Abstract Problem Artificial intelligence has been widely investigated for diagnosis and treatment strategy design, with some models proposed for detecting oral pharyngeal, nasopharyngeal, or laryngeal carcinoma. However, no comprehensive model has been established for these regions. Aim Our hypothesis was that a common pattern in the cancerous appearance of these regions could be recognized and integrated into a single model, thus improving the efficacy of deep learning models. Methods We utilized a point-wise spatial attention network model to perform semantic segmentation in these regions. Results Our study demonstrated an excellent outcome, with an average mIoU of 86.3%, and an average pixel accuracy of 96.3%. Conclusion The research confirmed that the mucosa of oral pharyngeal, nasopharyngeal, and laryngeal regions may share a common appearance, including the appearance of tumors, which can be recognized by a single artificial intelligence model. Therefore, a deep learning model could be constructed to effectively recognize these tumors.

Some experiments can’t be realized because the cochlea’s Corti is the most delicate and complex sensory organ. In this paper, some typical and special behavioral characteristics in the process of sensation were found in medical clinic. Based on the interdisciplinary principles of medicine, physics and biology, a real numerical simulation model of Corti is established. On the basis of verifying the correctness of the model, the mechanism corresponding to these typical and special behavior characteristics in the process of sensation is explored through simulation calculation and analysis. This study provides theoretical and applied basis for people to better understand the sound sensing mechanism, and provides a numerical simulation platform for further analyzing Corti’s sensing mechanism and good clinical application.

Abstract Objectives During clinical practice, we have detected a few cases of neck abscesses in patients diagnosed with esophageal foreign body impaction (EFB) but without the primary inflammatory disease. However, we do not know if neck abscesses caused by an inflammatory source are more like to be associated with a more severe progression or poorer prognosis. In this study, we aimed to identify differences between these two groups of patients by comparing progression and prognosis. Materials and methods We retrospectively reviewed all patients who underwent neck abscess incisions between January 2011 and March 2022 and divided these patients into two groups: an EFB group and an inflammation group. Data were described by percentages, means, and standard deviations (SDs). Fisher's precision probability test was used to compare differences between the EFB and inflammation groups. Categorical variables were analyzed by Pearson's Chi-squared test. In addition, three factors including hospital days, intensive care unit (ICU) stay, and drainage-tube removal time were used for multivariate analysis to identify independent correlations separately. Results We enrolled a total of 33 patients with neck abscesses who received surgical incisions; the EFB group included 14 (42%) cases, while the inflammatory group included 19 (58%) cases. No significant differences were identified between the two groups in terms of surgery type (with or without mediastinotomy) and postoperative management (negative pressure drainage or postoperative irrigation). There were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of hospital stay, the timing of drainage-tube removal, the risk of ICU admission, and the probability of receiving intubation and tracheotomy. Abstract Exosomes serve as a crucial mode of communication between tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) and cancer cells. This study attempted to explore the function of M1-derived exosomes and clarify their specific mechanism in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Moreover, the functional roles of M1-derived exosomes and their key molecule long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) HOXA transcript at the distal tip (HOTTIP) in HNSCC were investigated by conducting a series of in vitro and in vivo experiments. The dual-luciferase test was utilized to clarify the binding capacities between HOTTIP/mRNA and miRNAs. Accordingly, HOTTIP was found to be upregulated in M1-derived exosomes. Meanwhile, the in vitro experiments indicated that M1 exosomes suppressed proliferation, migration and invasion but induced apoptosis of cancer cells. This function was noted to be enhanced by HOTTIP-overexpressed M1 exosomes but was weakened by HOTTIP-knockdown ones, indicating that HOTTIP serves as a key molecule in M1 exosomes. Therefore, the function of HOTTIP in cancer cells was explored, for which overexpression of HOTTIP was found to inhibit proliferation, migration and invasion but induced apoptosis of cancer cells in vitro. A mechanism study further showed that M1 exosomes and HOTTIP activated the TLR5/NF-κB signaling pathway by competitively sponging miR-19a-3p and miR-19b-3p. Furthermore, cancer cells expressing HOTTIP were noted to induce the polarization of both local M1 and M2 macrophages; however, M1 exosomes were observed to reprogram local TAMs into M1 macrophages. More importantly, both cancer cells expressing HOTTIP and M1 exosomes reeducated circulating monocytes to express the M1 phenotype. The corresponding data demonstrated that the M1 exosomal lncRNA HOTTIP suppresses HNSCC progression by upregulating the TLR5/NF-κB signaling pathway through competitively sponging miR-19a-3p and miR-19b-3p. In particular, M1 exosomes and HOTTIP induce the polarization of M1 in circulating monocytes, thus providing novel insight into HNSCC immunotherapy.

Astaxanthine (AST) has important biological activities including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects that could alleviate neurological and heart diseases, but its role in the prevention of cisplatin-induced hearing loss (CIHL) is not yet well understood. In our study, a steady interaction between AST and the E3 ligase adapter Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1, a predominant repressor of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2), was performed and tested via computer molecular docking and dynamics. AST protected against cisplatin-induced ototoxicity via NRF2 mediated pathway using quantitative PCR and Western blotting. The levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and mitochondrial membrane potential revealed that AST reduced ROS overexpression and mitochondrial dysfunction. Moreover, AST exerted anti-apoptosis effects in mouse cochlear explants using immunofluorescence staining and HEI-OC1 cell lines using quantitative PCR and Western blotting. Finally, AST combined with poloxamer was injected into the middle ear through the tympanum, and the protection against CIHL was evaluated using the acoustic brain stem test and immunofluorescent staining in adult mice. Our results suggest that AST reduced ROS overexpression, mitochondrial dysfunction, and apoptosis via NRF2-mediated pathway in cisplatin-exposed HEI-OC1 cell lines and mouse cochlear explants, finally promoting cell survival. Our study demonstrates that AST is a candidate therapeutic agent for CIHL.

Arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM) is a genetic disease characterized by fibro-fatty myocardial replacement and is clinically associated with malignant ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. It presents a major diagnostic and therapeutic challenge due to its complex clinical presentation and multiparametric diagnostic scoring system that includes structural, histological, and electrocardiographic data. A 57-year-old man with a history of palpitation and premature ventricular contractions (PVC) experienced syncope and sustained ventricular tachycardia at a rate of 213 bpm, which was successfully rescued by synchronized cardioversion. Multiple ventricular aneurysms were found in the right ventricular free wall and the left ventricular apical regions, as well as mild biventricular systolic dysfunction, according to echocardiography and high-frequency ultrasound. The genetic analysis revealed the following desmoplakin genes, chr6-7585274-7585275, NM_004415, exon24, and c.7780delT (p.S2594Pfs*9), a heterozygous and likely pathogenic mutation, as the mutation sites in the patient and his 24-year-old daughter. During the 21-month follow-up, the patient did not experience syncope or pre-syncope symptoms while on β-blocker (bisoprolol) therapy. Among the multimodality imaging techniques of the ACM, late gadolinium enhancement on cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) is accepted as a more objective indicator of myocardial fibrosis. Left ventricular systolic dysfunction, fibrosis on CMR, and frequent PVC are the primary and most sensitive clinical signs of desmoplakin cardiomyopathy. However, echocardiography continues to be the most commonly used imaging modality for assessing focal ventricular movement and structural abnormalities. The pathological characteristics of arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy of the right ventricular anterior free wall and apical regions near the transducer can be better shown using high-frequency linear ultrasound with a higher resolution.

Abstract Background The inner ear organ is a delicate tissue consisting of hair cells (HCs) and supporting cells (SCs).The mammalian inner ear HCs are terminally differentiated cells that cannot spontaneously regenerate in adults. Epithelial non‐hair cells (ENHCs) in the utricle include HC progenitors and SCs, and the progenitors share similar characteristics with SCs in the neonatal inner ear. Methods We applied single‐cell sequencing to whole mouse utricles from the neonatal period to adulthood, including samples from postnatal day (P)2, P7 and P30 mice. Furthermore, using transgenic mice and immunostaining, we traced the source of new HC generation. Results We identified several sensory epithelial cell clusters and further found that new HCs arose mainly through differentiation from Sox9+ progenitor cells and that only a few cells were produced by mitotic proliferation in both neonatal and adult mouse utricles. In addition, we identified the proliferative cells using the marker UbcH10 and demonstrated that in adulthood the mitotically generated HCs were primarily found in the extrastriola. Moreover, we observed that not only Type II, but also Type I HCs could be regenerated by either mitotic cell proliferation or progenitor cell differentiation. Conclusions Overall, our findings expand our understanding of ENHC cell fate and the characteristics of the vestibular organs in mammals over the course of development.

Abstract Background There are limited evidences clarifying the impact of metabolic syndrome (MS) and its components on head and neck cancer (HNC) incidence risk. We explored the correlation between MS, MS components, and the combined effects of MS and C-reactive protein (CRP) and HNC risk. Methods This is a prospective analysis of 474,929 participants from the UK Biobank cohort. Cox proportional hazard regression was utilized to assess the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) and to explore the non-linear correlation between an individual MS component and HNC risk. Results Individuals with MS (HR, 1.05; 95%CI, 0.90–1.22) had no higher HNC risk than those without MS. More MS components showed no higher HNC risk. Nevertheless, hyperglycemia (HR, 1.22; 95%CI, 1.02–1.45) was independently correlated with elevated HNC risk. In a non-linear manner, waist circumference and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) showed a U-shaped association with HNC risk. Abstract Background The etiology of Takayasu arteritis (TA) is unknown; however, a possible relationship between streptococcal infection and TA has been proposed. This study aimed to identify the clinical features and cardiac valvular involvement in untreated TA patients with an elevated antistreptolysin O (ASO) titer. Methods In this retrospective study, the clinical characteristics and features of valvular involvement were compared in TA patients with or without an elevated ASO titer. Results Of the 74 untreated TA patients, 13 patients were found have elevated ASO titers (17.6%). Mitral insufficiency was the most common in patients with elevated ASO (69.2%, 9/13), followed by aortic valve insufficiency (46.2%, 5/13) and tricuspid insufficiency (46.2%, 5/13), which were no significantly different than that in normal ASO group. The proportions of moderate to severe mitral (30.8% vs 1.6%, p = 0.000) and tricuspid valve (15.4% vs 1.64%, p = 0.023) insufficiency in the ASO positive group were significantly higher than those in the ASO negative group. The odds of mitral regurgitation in patients with elevated ASO titers were 3.9 times higher than those in the group with normal ASO titers (p = 0.053, OR = 3.929, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.983–15.694). Furthermore, the risk of moderate to severe mitral insufficiency in patients with elevated ASO titers was 41.6 times higher than that in patients with normal ASO titers (p = 0.002, OR = 41.600, 95% CI: 3.867–447.559). Conclusions An increase in ASO titer is related to valvular involvement in TA and is closely linked to mitral insufficiency.

Disorders pertaining to 5-methylcytosine (m5C) modifications are involved in the pathological process of many diseases. However, the effect of m5C on the tumorigenesis and progression of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) remains unclear. In this study, we integrated the genomic and clinical data of 558 OSCC samples to comprehensively evaluate m5C modification patterns. Based on 16 m5C methylation regulators, two m5C modification clusters were identified with distinct tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) characteristics and prognosis in OSCC. We then performed weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) to identify m5C modification cluster-related modules. Genes in the selected module were chosen to construct the m5Cscore scoring system for evaluating m5C modification pattern in individual OSCC patients. Patients with a high m5Cscore had higher immune, stromal, and ESTIMATE scores; lower tumor purity score; lower immune activity; and higher tumor mutational burden. The overall survival rate and progression-free survival rate were markedly worse and the tumor recurrence rate was higher in OSCC patients with a high m5Cscore. Furthermore, patients with oral leukoplakia who also had a high m5Cscore had a higher risk of deterioration to OSCC. This study demonstrated that m5C modification patterns might affect the TIME in OSCC. m5Cscore may provide a new approach for predicting the prognosis and progression of OSCC.

A liposarcoma is a common soft tissue sarcoma found in adults; however, liposarcomas in the hypopharynx are extremely rare. Here, we report a large liposarcoma originating from the piriform sinus in a female; this is the fifth reported liposarcoma of the hypopharynx in a female, and the first (to our knowledge) liposarcoma in a female that was larger than 20 cm in its largest diameter. The mass was removed using suspension laryngoscopy and diagnosed as a well-differentiated liposarcoma. No recurrence was evident 14 months after surgery. Adeno-associated virus (AAV) is the preferred vector for gene therapy of hereditary deafness, and different viral serotypes, promoters and transduction pathways can influence the targeting of AAV to different types of cells and the expression levels of numerous exogenous genes. To determine the transduction and expression patterns of AAV with different serotypes or promoters in hair cells and supporting cells in the neonatal mouse cochlea, we examined the expression of enhanced green fluorescent protein (eGFP) for five different types of AAV vectors [serotypes 2, 9, and Anc80L65 with promoter cytomegalovirus (CMV)-beta-Globin and serotypes 2 and 9 with promoter chicken beta-actin (CBA)] in in vitro cochlear explant cultures and we tested the transduction of AAV2/2-CBA, AAV2/9-CBA, and AAV2/Anc80L65-CMV by in vivo microinjection into the scala media of the cochlea. We found that each AAV vector had its own transduction and expression characteristics in hair cells and supporting cells in different regions of the cochlea. There was a tonotopic gradient for the in vitro transduction of AAV2/2-CBA, AAV2/9-CBA, AAV2/2-CMV, and AAV2/9-CMV in outer hair cells (OHCs), with more OHCs expressing eGFP at the base of the cochlea than at the apex. AAV2/2-CBA in vitro and AAV2/Anc80L65-CMV in vivo induced more supporting cells expressing eGFP at the apex than in the base. We found that AAV vectors with different promoters had different expression efficacies in hair cells and supporting cells of the auditory epithelium. The CMV-beta-Globin promoter could drive the expression of the delivered construct more efficiently in hair cells, while the CBA promoter was more efficient in supporting cells. The in vitro and in vivo experiments both demonstrated that AAV2/Anc80L65-CMV was a very promising vector for gene therapy of deafness because of its high transduction rates in hair cells. These results might be useful for selecting the appropriate vectors for gene delivery into different types of inner ear cells and thus improving the effectiveness of gene therapy.

Precipitation hardening provides one of the most common strengthening mechanisms for magnesium (Mg) alloys. Here, we report a new precipitation-hardenable Mg sheet alloy based on the magnesium–silver–calcium system. In a solution treated condition (T4), the strength of Mg–xAg–0.1Ca alloys is enhanced with increasing the Ag content from 1.5 wt.% to 12 wt.%. The Mg–12Ag–0.1Ca (wt.%) alloy sheet shows moderate tensile yield strengths of 193 MPa, 130 MPa, 117 MPa along the rolling direction (RD), 45° and transverse direction (TD) in the T4-treated condition. Subsequent artificial aging at 170 °C for 336 h (T6) increases the tensile yield strengths to 236 MPa, 163 MPa and 143 MPa along the RD, 45° and TD, respectively. This improvement in the tensile yield strength by the T6 treatment can be ascribed to the formation of AgMg4 precipitates lying on the {112¯0}ɑ and pyramidal planes. Our finding is expected to stimulate the development of precipitation-hardenable Mg–Ag-based wrought alloys with high strength.

The mean shift algorithm has achieved considerable success in target tracking due to its simplicity and robustness. However, the lack of spatial information may result in its failure to get high tracking precision. This might be even worse when the target is scale variant and the sequences are gray-levels. This paper presents a novel multiple subtemplates based tracking algorithm for the terminal guidance application. By applying a separate tracker to each subtemplate, it can handle more complicated situations such as rotation, scaling, and partial coverage of the target. The innovations include: (1) an optimal subtemplates selection algorithm is designed, which ensures that the selected subtemplates maximally represent the information of the entire template while having the least mutual redundancy; (2) based on the serial tracking results and the spatial constraint prior to those subtemplates, a Gaussian weighted voting method is proposed to locate the target center; (3) the optimal scale factor is determined by maximizing the voting results among the scale searching layers, which avoids the complicated threshold setting problem. Experiments on some videos with static scenes show that the proposed method greatly improves the tracking accuracy compared to the original mean shift algorithm.

Implantable middle ear hearing devices (IMEHDs) have been developed as a new technology to overcome the limitations of conventional hearing aids. The piezoelectric cantilever transducers currently used in the IMEHDs have the advantages of low power consumption and ease of fabrication, but generate less high-frequency output. To address this problem, we proposed and designed a new piezoelectric transducer based on a piezoelectric stack for the IMEHD. This new transducer, attached to the incus body with a coupling rod, stimulates the ossicular chain in response to the expansion-and-contraction of its piezoelectric stack. To test its feasibility for hearing loss compensation, a bench testing of the transducer prototype and a temporal bone experiment were conducted, respectively. Several types of electromagnetic transducer for the middle ear implants (MEIs) have been developed as an alternative to conventional hearing aids for the rehabilitation of sensorineural hearing loss. Electromagnetic transducer type and design are thought to have a significant influence on their hearing compensation performance. To investigate these effects, a middle ear computational model was constructed based on a complete set of microcomputerized tomography section images of a human ear. Its validity was confirmed by comparing the model predicted motions with published experimental measurements. The result shows that the eardrum driving transducer (EDT) is superior to the floating mass transducer (FMT) in hearing compensation when the transducer mass is small but inferior to the FMT when the mass gets bigger. The incus body driving transducer (IBDT) is the most ineffective type of transducer for hearing compensation. Moreover, the masses of the EDT and the FMT decrease the transducer performance mainly at higher frequencies: the greater the transducer mass, the lower the displacement of the stapes excited by these transducers. On the other hand, the IBDT driving rod stiffness decreases transducer's performance severely at low frequencies and its adverse effect on transducer performance increases with the decrease of the stiffness of the IBDT driving rod.

BACKGROUND: USPIO is a contrast agent for MRI that can generate T2W images with low signal intensities. After subcutaneous or intravenous injection of USPIO, normal lymph node tissues uptake these nano-particles, but tumor cells do not. Thus, tumor metastasis can be detected using this contrast agent. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to access the feasibility of USPIO enhanced MRI for the detection of cervical lymph node metastasis in a pyriform sinus carcinoma animal model and to investigate the ability of USPIO to enhance images of cervical lymph node metastases. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Twenty New Zealand rabbits were randomly divided into tumor and inflammatory groups, and each group contained 10 rabbits. In the inflammatory group, a 0.5 ml egg yolk emulsion was injected into the sub-mandibular muscle of the rabbits to induce an inflammatory reaction in their cervical lymph nodes. In the tumor group, a VX2 tumor tissue suspension was transplanted into the pyriform sinus sub-mucosa of the rabbits using direct laryngoscope. Four weeks after the tumor or egg yolk injection, MRIs were performed before and after USPIO injection to observe the imaging enhancement features of USPIO. After that, a histo-pathological analysis was performed for all rabbits. We found the metastatic lymph nodes had no signal reduced intensity or irregular signal reduced intensity on T2-weighted image by using USPIO enhancement. In the tumor group,the sensitivity and specificity of plain MRI were 57.6% and 60.7%. The corresponding values of USPIO-enhanced MRl were 96.1% and 85.7%. (P

A new incus-body driving type transducer relying on piezoelectric stack, with broad frequency bandwidth, is proposed for use in a middle ear implant. To aid the design process of this transducer, a coupling biomechanical model of the human middle ear and the piezoelectric transducer was established by reverse engineering technology. The validity of this model was confirmed by comparing model predicted motions with experimental measurements. Based on this verified biomechanical model, the main parameters of the transducer were determined. And its power consumption was calculated. Finally, to verify the capability of the designed piezoelectric transducer, a human temporal bone experimental platform was built. And the dynamic characteristics and the stimulated performance of the piezoelectric transducer were tested. The result showed that stapes displacement stimulated by the transducer excitation at 10.5 V RMS was equivalent to that from acoustic stimulation at 100 dB SPL, which is an adequate stimulation to the ossicular chain. The corresponding power consumption is 0.31 mW per volt of excitation at 1 kHz, which is low enough for the transducer to be used in a middle ear implant. Besides, this transducer demonstrates high performance at high frequencies.

Abstract Objective: The study aimed to compare the clinical outcomes of simplified linear plication and classic patch plasty in patients with left ventricular aneurysm (LVA). Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 282 patients undergoing LVA repair between 2006 and 2016. After propensity score matching, 45 pairs of patients receiving LVA surgery were divided into either a patch group (on-pump endoventricular patch plasty) or a plication group (off-pump linear plication). Then, their early surgical outcomes and long-term survival were compared in two matched groups. Results: The heart function improvement at discharge was similar in the two matched groups, while patients in the patch group more commonly suffered from low cardiac output syndrome (P=0.042) with higher proportion of intra-aortic balloon pumping assistance (P=0.034) than patients in the plication group. Due to the texture with a large spread of (0001) orientation in the transverse direction (TD), the extruded AZ31 alloy plate exhibited a much higher yield strength (169 vs. 70 MPa) along the extrusion direction (ED) compared with the TD. The threshold stress for SCC was slightly higher for the ED specimen compared with the TD specimen (90 vs. 70 MPa) due to the much higher yield strength. However, the ratio between threshold stress and yield strength was much larger for the TD specimen (100% vs. 53%), indicating its low susceptibility to SCC. Corrosion grooves formed perpendicular to the tensile direction and along the interstices of Mg(OH)2 corrosion product film. Corrosion grooves acting as fracture initiation sites tended to propagate along non-basal planes, particularly, prismatic plane, due to lower corrosion resistance compared with basal plane. The higher resistance to SCC for the TD specimen may be attributed to the higher probability of basal plane on the exposed surfaces of corrosion grooves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effects of process parameters on room-temperature (RT) deep drawability were investigated for AZ31B magnesium alloy sheets, in which the formation of basal texture was suppressed by high-temperature rolling. When the blank holder force was set to the minimum value to prevent wrinkling, high RT drawability was obtained. In particular, a significantly high limiting draw ratio (LDR) of 1.83 was obtained by the optimization of the process parameters of the servo-press machine. At higher punch speeds, the drawability tended to be deteriorated; however, a high LDR of 1.72 was obtained even at a high punch speed of 50mm/s by the optimization of the process parameters of the servo-press machine. Furthermore, when the punch speed in the initial stage of deep drawing was reduced, it was possible to perform deep drawing without fracture even if the punch speed in the later stages was increased. The results of the study of the effect of lubricants indicated that relatively high RT drawability was obtained when molybdenum disulfide was utilized. T6-tempered A6061 aluminum alloy sheets were edge joined using electrodeposited copper. Anodic oxidation of the aluminum alloy substrates improved the resulting join strength. This observation is attributed to the nanoanchor effect—mechanical interlocking between the nanoporous structure of anodic aluminum oxides (AAOs) and the electrodeposited copper. A tensile join strength of 214 MPa was obtained when the sheets were joined in an electroplating bath containing thiourea. The microstructures at the AAOs/copper interface were observed using scanning and transmission electron microscopies to elucidate the underlying mechanism of the high join strength.
