Aims: To identify candidate inflammatory biomarkers for the underlying mechanism of auricular point acupressure (APA) on pain relief and examine the correlations among pain intensity, interference, and inflammatory biomarkers.This is a secondary data analysis.Participants/Subjects: METHODS: Data on inflammatory biomarkers collected via blood samples and patient self-reported pain intensity and interference from three pilot studies (chronic low back pain, n = 61; arthralgia related to aromatase inhibitors, n = 20; and chemotherapy-induced neuropathy, n = 15) were integrated and analyzed. This paper reports the results based on within-subject treatment effects (change in scores from pre- to post-APA intervention) for each study group (chronic low back pain, cancer pain), between-group differences (changes in scores from pre- to post-intervention between targeted-point APA [T-APA] and non-targeted-point APA [NT-APA]), and correlations among pain intensity, interference, and biomarkers.Within-group analysis (the change score from pre- to post-APA) revealed statistically significant changes in three biomarkers: TNF-α (cancer pain in the APA group, p = .03), β-endorphin (back pain in the APA group, p = .04), and IL-2 (back pain in the NT-APA group, p = .002). Based on between-group analysis in patients with chronic low back pain (T-APA vs NT-APA), IL-4 had the largest effect size (0.35), followed by TNF-α (0.29). A strong positive monotonic relationship between IL-1β and IL-2 was detected.The current findings further support the potential role of inflammatory biomarkers in the analgesic effects of APA. More work is needed to gain a comprehensive understanding of the underlying mechanisms of APA on chronic pain. Because it is simple, inexpensive, and has no negative side effects, APA can be widely disseminated as an alternative to opioids.

In this work, the impacts of OFF-state gate bias (VGS,OFF) on dynamic on-resistance (RON) are systematically investigated in commercial Schottky-type p-GaN Gate high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs). Double-pulse tester (DPT) and PIV system are adopted to evaluate the dynamic RON with various OFF-state gate and drain bias (VDS,OFF) under hard- and soft-switching conditions. More negative VGS,OFF can aggravate the dynamic RON degradation under both soft- and hard-switching, especially when switching with a high VDS,OFF. The impacts of VGS,OFF on switching transients and OFF-state stress are investigated separately to reveal the underlying mechanisms, which are found to be associated with the generation and movements of holes. OFF-state gate bias of the voltage-driving scheme needs to be carefully considered according to the identified mechanisms in terms of dynamic on-resistance degradation.

The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics of Th40 cells (CD4 + CD40 + T cells) in Chinese systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. Flow cytometry was used to identify the percentage of Th40 cells in peripheral blood from 24 SLE patients and 24 healthy individuals and the level of IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, IFN-r, and TNF-α in serum (22 cases) from the SLE patients. Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index 2000 (SLEDAI-2000) was used to assess the SLE disease active state. T-test and two independent-samples Wilcoxon tests were used for statistical analysis. The percentage of Th40 cells in T cells from SLE patients (19.37 ± 17.43) (%) was significantly higher than that from healthy individuals (4.52 ± 3.16) (%) (P = 0.000). The percentage of Th40 cells was also positively associated with SLEDAI-2000 (P = 0.001) and negatively associated with complement C3 (P = 0.007). The Th40 cell percentage was different in SLE patients with different organs involved. The Th40 cell percentage in SLE patients with lupus serositis (29.29 ± 22.19) was significantly higher than that in patients without serositis (13.41 ± 10.79; P = 0.040), and the percentage in SLE patients with lupus pneumonia involvement (29.11 ± 11.88) was significantly higher than that in patients without lupus pneumonia (16.80 ± 17.99; P = 0.043). After 4 weeks treatment, the Th40 cell percentage decreased significantly (P = 0.005). However, Th40 cell expression was not related to cytokines (IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, IFN-r, and TNF-α; P>0.05). A significantly higher percentage of Th40 cells was found in SLE patients, and the Th40 cell percentage was associated with SLE activity. Thus, Th40 cells may be used as a predictor for SLE disease activity and severity and therapeutic efficacy.

A physical-layer secure data encryption algorithm is proposed and demonstrated using chaotic constellation mapping associated with probabilistic shaping (PS) for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing passive optical networks (OFDM-PONs). The constellation of the encrypted data is uniformly distributed after chaotic diffusion in quadratic-amplitude modulation (QAM) mapping, to eliminate the statistical characteristics, where a key space of ~10231 is created by a 4-dimensional hyper digital chaos. Moreover, PS is introduced to improve the OFDM signal transmission. A 9.4 Gb/s encrypted PS-16-QAM OFDM signal transmission is successfully demonstrated over 20 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF), where the gain of receiver sensitivity is ~2 dB (bit-error rate @ 10−3) using PS.

We report a 16.8 Tb/s true random number generator (TRNG) based on amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) of Erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA), which is sliced into 42 parallel channels by an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG). The true randomness of ASE is enhanced and guaranteed by a novel extraction approach utilizing two orthogonal polarized components of ASE. Consequently, the random number generation rate (RNGR) can be significantly increased via higher sampling rate. The experimental results show that, the single-channel RNGR of 400 Gb/s is achieved, while the overall RNGR is 16.8 Tb/s for the full ASE spectrum. The proposed TRNG is of great significance in the field of secret key distribution and confidential communication.

Objective: The goal of this study is to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of an auricular point acupressure smartphone app (mAPA) to self-manage chronic musculoskeletal pain. Methods: A prospective, longitudinal, randomized, controlled pilot trial was conducted using a three-group design (self-guided mAPA (n = 14); in-person mAPA (n = 12); and control (n = 11)). The primary outcomes included physical function and pain intensity. Results: After a 4-week APA intervention, participants in the in-person mAPA group had improved physical function of 32% immediately post-intervention and 29% at the 1M follow-up. Participants in the self-guided mAPA group had higher improvement (42% at post-intervention and 48% at the 1M follow-up). Both mAPA groups had similar degrees of pain intensity relief at post-intervention (45% for in-person and 48% for the self-guided group) and the 1M follow-up (42% for in-person and 45% for the self-guided group). Over 50% of the participants in each group reached at least 30% reduced pain intensity at post-intervention, and this was sustained in the mAPA groups at the 1M follow-up. Approximately 80% of the participants in both mAPA groups were satisfied with the treatment outcomes and adhered to the suggested APA practice; however, participants in the self-guided group had higher duration and more frequency in APA use. The attrition rate was 16% at the 1M follow-up. No adverse effects of APA were reported, and participants found APA to be beneficial and the app to be valuable. Conclusions: The study findings indicate that participants effectively learned APA using a smartphone app, whether they were self-guided or received in-person training. They were able to self-administer APA to successfully manage their pain. Participants found APA to be valuable in their pain self-management and expressed satisfaction with the intervention using the app.

Sarcopenia, generally described as "aging-related loss of skeletal muscle mass and function", can occur secondary to a systemic disease.This project aimed to study the prevalence of sarcopenia in chronic ambulatory stroke survivors and its associated risk factors using the two most recent diagnostic criteria.A cross-sectional observational study.A scientific laboratory.Chronic stroke.Twenty-eight ambulatory chronic stroke survivors (12 females; mean age=57.8±11.8 years; time after stroke=76±45 months), hand-grip strength, gait speed, and appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) were measured to define sarcopenia. Risk factors, including motor impairment and spasticity, were identified using regression analysis.The prevalence of sarcopenia varied between 18% and 25% depending on the diagnostic criteria used. A significant difference was seen in the prevalence of low hand grip strength on the affected side (96%) when compared to the contralateral side (25%). The prevalence of slow gait speed was 86% while low ASM was present in 89% of the subjects. Low ASM was marginally negatively correlated with time since stroke and gait speed, but no correlation was observed with age, motor impairment, or spasticity. ASM loss, bone loss and fat deposition were significantly greater in the affected upper limb than in the affected lower limb. Regression analyses showed that time since stroke was a factor associated with bone and muscle loss in the affected upper limb, spasticity had a protective role for muscle loss in the affected lower limb, and walking had a protective role for bone loss in the lower limb.The prevalence of sarcopenia in stroke survivors is high and is a multifactorial process that is not age-related. Different risk factors contribute to muscle loss in the upper and lower limbs after stroke.Clinicians need to be aware of high prevalence of sarcopenia in chronic stroke survivors. Sarcopenia is more evident in the upper than lower limbs. Clinicians also need to understand potential protective roles of some factors, such as spasticity and walking for the muscles in the lower limb.

Hyperactivation of oncogenic pathways downstream of RAS and PI3K/AKT in normal cells induces a senescence-like phenotype that acts as a tumor-suppressive mechanism that must be overcome during transformation. We previously demonstrated that AKT-induced senescence (AIS) is associated with profound transcriptional and metabolic changes. Here, we demonstrate that human fibroblasts undergoing AIS display upregulated cystathionine-β-synthase (CBS) expression and enhanced uptake of exogenous cysteine, which lead to increased hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and glutathione (GSH) production, consequently protecting senescent cells from oxidative stress-induced cell death. CBS depletion allows AIS cells to escape senescence and re-enter the cell cycle, indicating the importance of CBS activity in maintaining AIS. Mechanistically, we show this restoration of proliferation is mediated through suppressing mitochondrial respiration and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production by reducing mitochondrial localized CBS while retaining antioxidant capacity of transsulfuration pathway. These findings implicate a potential tumor-suppressive role for CBS in cells with aberrant PI3K/AKT pathway activation. Consistent with this concept, in human gastric cancer cells with activated PI3K/AKT signaling, we demonstrate that CBS expression is suppressed due to promoter hypermethylation. CBS loss cooperates with activated PI3K/AKT signaling in promoting anchorage-independent growth of gastric epithelial cells, while CBS restoration suppresses the growth of gastric tumors in vivo. Taken together, we find that CBS is a novel regulator of AIS and a potential tumor suppressor in PI3K/AKT-driven gastric cancers, providing a new exploitable metabolic vulnerability in these cancers.

High-speed physical-layer secure key generation and distribution (SKGD) schemes via channel reciprocity are achieved using external electro-optical modulation or random source distribution via additional fiber links. Here, we propose and demonstrate an SKGD scheme using the fluctuation of polarization states from an amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) source, without any external electro-optical modulation or additional fiber link. Experimentally, an error-free key generation rate (KGR) of 10.1 Gb/s is achieved over a 10-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF), with true randomness originating from ASE. Moreover, the single fiber channel can be shared for SKGD as well as data transmission, allowing the integration of the proposed SKGD with the deployed fiber infrastructure.

Real-time post-processing for physical-layer secure key distribution in fiber networks is implemented on FPGA, with quantization, information reconciliation and privacy amplification modules, where a key generation rate of 11.7 Mbps is achieved.

We present the high-speed physical-layer secure key generation and distribution in fiber networks. A key generation rate of 2.7 Gb/s is achieved over 10 km single-mode fiber using a specifically-designed bidirectional polarization scrambler.

A two-dimensional (2D) Ga2O3 monolayer with an asymmetric quintuple-layer configuration was reported as a novel 2D material with excellent stability and strain tunability. This unusual asymmetrical structure opens up new possibilities for improving the selectivity and sensitivity of gas sensors by using selected surface orientations. In this study, the surface adsorptions of nine molecular gases, namely, O2, CO2, CO, SO2, NO2, H2S, NO, NH3, and H2O, on the 2D Ga2O3 monolayer are systematically investigated through first-principles calculations. The intrinsic dipole of the system leads to different adsorption energies and changes in the electronic structures between the top- and bottom-surface adsorptions. Analyses of electronic structures and charge transport calculations indicate a potential application of the 2D Ga2O3 monolayer as a room-temperature NO gas-sensing device with high sensitivity and tunable adsorption energy using plenary strain-induced lattice distortion.

In this work, the impacts of OFF-state gate bias (V GS,OFF ) on the dynamic on-resistance (R ON ) are investigated in the commercial Schottky-type p-GaN gate high-electron-mobility transistor (HEMT). Poverty remains one of the long-term chronic dilemmas facing the sustainable development of human society during the 21st century. The spatiotemporal dynamics of poor regions, particularly in developing countries, is crucial for realizing fundamental sustainable development goals (SDGs). For decades, many scholars have sought to accurately measure, identify and alleviate poverty at different geographical scales. However, reliable data about the estimation of poverty remain scarce for developing countries, hindering efforts to accurately identify poverty. This paper utilizes the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program Operational Linescan System (DMSP/OLS) sensor nighttime light imagery to identify poor counties in China from 1992 to 2013. Using 16 statistical and spatial features extracted from this nighttime light imagery and using 96 poor counties and 96 nonpoor counties from 2010 as the classification sample, we describe the spatiotemporal dynamics of poor counties based on a random forests approach. Our study finds that the number of poor counties is decreasing in a fluctuating pattern and that contiguous poverty-stricken areas are becoming fragmented. The reduction in poor counties exhibits a manner of moving horizontally from the eastern regions to the central and western parts of China, while the number of poor counties in the central and western regions has decreased around the central cities or areas. The Aihui-Tengchong Line is not the dividing line in the distribution of poor counties in China, which means that China's poor can also be found in areas with relatively high population density. Together, the findings reveal that the key to reducing regional poverty is the development of regional economies and the implementation of national macro policies. This paper provides references for formulating antipoverty strategies for each county and offers new insights into poverty estimation and regional sustainable development for other developing countries.

Poverty remains one of the most serious chronic dilemmas facing civilization and economic development in the 21st century. How to accurately measure, identify and alleviate poverty have been urgent topics on different geographical scales for decades. Based on census data at the county level from 2000 to 2010 in China, principal component analysis was used to establish an integrated multidimensional poverty index (IMPI) for geographical identification of poverty-stricken counties using an indicators system guided by a sustainable livelihoods framework. Further cluster analysis, spatial analysis and a self-organizing map show obvious spatiotemporal heterogeneity of multidimensional poverty across the 2311 counties in China. The results demonstrate that the counties with higher IMPI are concentrated and conjointly distributed in southwest China, north of central China and southeast of northwest China in mountainous regions and plateaus. Longitudinal comparisons demonstrate that the degree of multidimensional poverty has relatively decreased across China from 2000 to 2010, but regional disparities continue to expand and new aspects are emerging. In addition, compared with 2000, the number of counties with multidimensional poverty in 2010 increased in northeast China and decreased in central China. Many counties have experienced generally increased levels in certain domains of poverty. The relative contribution of each indicator to the IMPI also provides important references for formulating and implementing poverty policy. Quantile regression was utilized to explore the application of the IMPI in assessing environmental inequality. The result indicates that many poverty-stricken and developed counties are exposed to poor air quality. The accurate identification of geographical and spatiotemporal patterns of poverty in China can lead to the implementation of anti-poverty strategies. This paper also offers new insights into poverty measurement for other developing countries.

Poverty is a major problem that has consistently impacted human development. The spatial characteristics of poverty are nonvolatile at the regional level and represent the primary factors underlying the spatial poverty trap. Previous research on spatial poverty has frequently attempted to theoretically demonstrate the relationship between the spatial distribution of socioeconomic factors and regional poverty by drawing poverty maps, whereas less attention has focused on geographic factors. The case of Miao–Dong Autonomous Prefecture of Qiandongnan in Guizhou Province, China, is examined herein. This paper proposes a theoretical framework for the mechanisms linking the geographical environment and regional poverty and then conducts a quantitative analysis of the spatial association and degree of influence of these mechanisms. A geographically weighted regression (GWR) is employed to analyse the explanatory ability of variables in local areas. The results show that the mean slope and road network density have the most statistically significant correlations with the town-level poverty headcount ratios in Qiandongnan. Specifically, mountainous regions with steeper slopes suffer from a higher poverty headcount ratio, and towns with higher road network densities have a lower poverty headcount ratio because of the convenience of transportation. Additionally, the GWR indicates the occurrence of spatial nonstationarity, which indicates that the nature and strength of the association between each geographic indicator and the poverty headcount ratio varies across the 201 towns, with a linear growth pattern observed from north to south. Moreover, the results of a correlation analysis demonstrate that land cover with different slope classifications is more related to the regional poverty headcount ratio than land cover without a slope classification. We expect that this paper will provide useful insights for incorporating geographical factors into the formulation of poverty reduction policies.

The extensive use of surfactants in food, laundry products and agriculture has caused concern about their biosafety. However, few studies have been done on their potential effect on the lipase which has always been used with surfactants in food and laundry industry. Herein, we investigated the interaction of three surfactants (sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS), sodium lauryl sulfonate (SLS)) with Candida rugosa lipase (CRL), which is a popular biocatalyst used regularly with surfactants. The effect of the three surfactants on the conformation and activity of CRL was evaluated by using multiple spectral methods, enzyme activity assay and molecular docking modeling. The results demonstrated that CRL interacted with SDS, SDBS and SLS primarily through hydrophobic forces, H-bonding and electrostatic forces, respectively. The binding constants (KA) of SDBS with CRL varied with temperature: 1.99×103mol/L at 298K and 4.13×103mol/L at 318K. SDS and SDBS affected the secondary structure and skeleton of CRL, which changed the polarity of CRL and enhanced its activity. SLS also changed the secondary structure and activity of CRL moderately, but had little effect on its polarity and chromophore microenvironment. Accordingly, all three surfactants exhibited effect to CRL on the molecular level calling for more attention to pay on their biosafety. The work demonstrates that SDS, SDBS and SLS could cause negative effects to CRL from different angles and therefore are not bio-friendly detergents.

Exterior (i.e., outside the building) soil-gas sampling has been often used to estimate the sub-slab soil-gas concentration and to assess the risk of indoor vapor intrusion. However, the effectiveness of this method can be influenced by rainfall events. In this study, a two-dimensional, water-air two-phase flow numerical model is developed to investigate the effect of rainfall infiltration on the temporal variation of the soil-gas concentration at different depths outside and beneath the building footprint. It is found that rainfall infiltration generally exerts the capping effect and the dilution effect, resulting the increase and decrease in the soil-gas concentration, respectively. Given the soil type of sandy loam, the variation of the shallow and mid-depth soil-gas concentration depends respectively on the rainfall intensity and the total amount of rainwater, while the deep soil-gas concentration is found insensitive to a rainfall event. Moreover, the response timescale of the soil-gas concentration to a rainfall event is larger for a soil type with lower permeability. Considering a rainfall event with the intensity of 4 mm/h and the duration of 24 h, the response timescales of the soil-gas concentration at a depth of 2 m below the ground surface are larger than 1 year for silt loam, sandy clay loam, and sandy loam, and about 5 and 2 months for loamy sand and sand, respectively, where evapotranspiration is not considered. For the soil type of sand, rainfall infiltration can yield a maximum underestimation error of 12%, when using exterior soil-gas sampling to estimate the sub-slab soil-gas concentration. For the relatively less permeable soil type, such as sandy loam, silt loam and sandy clay loam, by contrast, a maximum overestimation error of 8% is found. The results obtained in this study can offer important implications for practitioners to assess the indoor vapor intrusion risk through exterior soil-gas sampling under the rainfall effect.

A point to multi-point physical-layer secure key generation and distribution (SKGD) scheme is proposed and demonstrated in passive optical networks (PONs), where the optical line terminal (OLT) broadcasts optical lights with fast fluctuating states of polarization (SOPs) to the optical network units (ONUs). The highly correlated key waveforms are shared between OLT and ONUs, and the high-level security of the SKGD scheme is guaranteed by the high sensitivity of SOP dynamics associated with the specific fiber links. As a proof of concept, a 3.9 Gb/s SKGD is achieved over 11 km single-mode fiber, where a Sagnac interferometer-based polarization scrambler is constructed as the high-speed random source. Moreover, the generated key sequences are verified to be error free and truly random. The proposed SKGD scheme offers a flexible solution for security enhancement in PONs, and is also compatible with the current PON infrastructure.
