Right ventricular-pulmonary artery coupling (RV-PAC) serves as an indicator of the efficiency of energy transfer from the right ventricle to the pulmonary circulation. It plays a critical role in the diagnosis, clinical treatment, and prognosis of conditions such as pulmonary hypertension, heart valve disease, and heart failure. Various non-invasive evaluation methods have recently been proposed for assessing RV contractility and arterial afterload, based on the end-systolic elastance to arterial elastance ratio (Ees/Ea), which is derived from invasive pressure-volume loops. In this review, we summarize the fundamental concepts, physiological mechanisms, examination methods, influencing factors, and clinical significance of RV-PAC to provide a valuable reference for clinical practice.

Abstract Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT) is an autoimmune disease, characterized by abnormal elevation in thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPO-Ab) and/or thyroglobulin antibody (TG-Ab). Patients have multiple symptoms despite adequate hormone substitution. In the present study, we aimed to quantify the relationship between thyroid antibodies and multiple symptoms, inflammation and health-related life quality. A total of 108 HT patients with clinical euthyroid status and 57 heathy controls were recruited. Clinical parameters were determined by laboratory examination, and the symptoms burden and life quality were obtained by a Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis Symptom Questionnaire and a SF-36 Questionnaire, respectively. Compared with healthy controls, multiple extrathyroidal symptoms were significantly more serious in HT patients despite euthyroid status, mainly including that related to digestive system (abdominal distension, constipation and diarrhea), endocrine system (chilliness, gain weight and facial edema), neuropsychiatric system (forgetfulness, anxiety, depressed, fatigue, insomnia, irritability, and indifferent) and mucocutaneous system (dry skin, pruritus, and hair loss). Furthermore, serum TPO-Ab and TG-Ab were both inversely correlated with health-related life quality of general health and vitality parameters, and positively correlated with pro-inflammatory factors of TNF-α and IFN-γ, as well as severity of abdominal distension, diarrhea, chilliness, forgetfulness and fatigue. Moreover, TG-Ab level was positively associated with depressed, insomnia and indifferent. HT patients suffered from a variety of symptoms, and the elevated thyroid antibodies were inversely associated with health-related life quality and positively associated with inflammation and multiple extrathyroidal symptoms.

Abstract Background Glechoma longituba, recognized as a medicinal plant, provides valuable pharmaceutical raw materials for treating various diseases. Saline-alkali stress may effectively enhance the medicinal quality of G. longituba by promoting the synthesis of secondary metabolites. To investigate the changes in the primary medicinal components of G. longituba under saline-alkali stress and improve the quality of medicinal materials, Na2CO3 was applied to induce short-term stress under different conditions and the biomass, physiologically active substances and primary medicinal components of G. longituba were measured in this study. Results Under alkaline salt stress, the activities of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) were elevated in G. longituba, accompanied by increased accumulation of proline (Pro) and malondialdehyde (MDA). Furthermore, analysis of the medicinal constituents revealed that G. longituba produced the highest levels of soluble sugars, flavonoids, ursolic acid, and oleanolic acid under 0.6% Na2CO3 stress for 48 h, 0.2% Na2CO3 stress for 72 h, 0.4% Na2CO3 stress for 12 h, and 0.4% Na2CO3 stress for 8 h, respectively. Conclusions Short-term Na2CO3 stress enhances the synthesis of medicinal components in G. longituba. By manipulating stress conditions, the production of various medicinal substances could be optimized. This approach may serve as a basis for the targeted cultivation of G. longituba, offering potential applications in the treatment of diverse diseases.

Objective: Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is a significant risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD). This study aimed to assess the variations in biomarkers associated with CHD in T2DM patients across different age groups in the Han Chinese population. Methods: A strict selection process was employed, involving three groups: a control group (n = 300) with no medical history, a new-onset T2DM group (n = 300), and a new-onset T2DM + CHD group (n = 300). Participants in each group were further categorized based on age: Group 1 (75 years). Fasting glucose, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA1), apolipoprotein B (ApoB), ApoB/ApoA1 ratio, lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)], high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), and homocysteine (HCY) levels were analyzed in all groups. Results: Both T2DM and T2DM + CHD groups exhibited elevated levels of TG, TC, LDL-C, ApoB, ApoB/ApoA1, Lp(a), hsCRP, and HCY, alongside decreased levels of HDL-C and ApoA1 in comparison to the control group. Notably, when comparing the T2DM to the T2DM + CHD groups, significant increases were noted in ApoB, Lp(a), and hsCRP levels in the T2DM + CHD group, whereas other biomarkers did not show significant differences. Across all age groups, the patterns remained consistent, with the T2DM and T2DM + CHD groups showing elevated levels of TG, TC, LDL-C, ApoB, ApoB/ApoA1, Lp(a), hsCRP, and HCY, and decreased levels of HDL-C and ApoA1 compared to their respective age-matched control groups. Furthermore, within each age category, significant increases in ApoB, Lp(a), and hsCRP were specifically observed with advancing age in the T2DM + CHD group, with Lp(a) and hsCRP levels showing particularly notable elevations, underscoring their potential as significant indicators of CHD risk in the T2DM population. Conclusion: Lp(a) and hsCRP may serve as valuable risk biomarkers for the development of CHD in T2DM patients. Understanding the variations in these biomarkers across different age groups can assist in risk assessment and the development of personalized management strategies for CHD in T2DM patients.

Abstract Background Vulvar and vaginal melanoma (VuM & VaM) is a rare gynecologic malignancy with high mortality but low effectiveness to checkpoint immunotherapy compared to cutaneous melanoma. This article aims to elucidate the role of the disordered immune microenvironment in cancer progression in VuM. Methods At first, this article applied single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) to the VuM obtained from a 68-year-old female patient, and constructed a single-cell atlas of VuM consist of 12,243 single cells. Then this article explores the genomic complexity and core signal channel in VuM microenvironment. Results This article provides new insights about the pathogenesis of VuM based on single-cell resolution data. It was found that the activation of CD8+ T cell contributed to induce tumor angiogenesis and immune escape, and the activation of the antigen-presenting molecular function participated in melanoma metastasis. Conclusion This article provided new insights into underlining VuM molecular regulation and potential signaling involved in immunotherapy, which would benefit the clinical practice and administration.

Abstract As climate conditions deteriorate, human health faces a broader range of threats. This study aimed to determine the risk of death from metabolic syndrome (MetS) due to meteorological factors. We collected daily data from 2014 to 2020 in Wuhu City, including meteorological factors, environmental pollutants and death data of common MetS (hypertension, hyperlipidemia and diabetes), as well as a total number of 15,272 MetS deaths. To examine the relationship between meteorological factors, air pollutants, and MetS mortality, we used a generalized additive model (GAM) combined with a distributed delay nonlinear model (DLNM) for time series analysis. The relationship between the above factors and death outcomes was preliminarily evaluated using Spearman analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM). As per out discovery, diurnal temperature range (DTR) and daily mean temperature (T mean) increased the MetS mortality risk notably. The ultra low DTR raised the MetS mortality risk upon the general people, with the highest RR value of 1.033 (95% CI: 1.002, 1.065) at lag day 14. In addition, T mean was also significantly associated with MetS death. The highest risk of ultra low and ultra high T mean occured on the same day (lag 14), RR values were 1.043 (95% CI: 1.010, 1.077) and 1.032 (95% CI: 1.003, 1.061) respectively. Stratified analysis’s result showed lower DTR had a more pronounced effect on women and the elderly, and ultra low and high T mean was a risk factor for MetS mortality in women and men. The elderly need to take extra note of temperature changes, and different levels of T mean will increase the risk of death. In warm seasons, ultra high RH and T mean can increase the mortality rate of MetS patients.

Abstract Rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta, RMs) are widely used in sexual maturation studies due to their high genetic and physiological similarity to humans. However, judging sexual maturity in captive RMs based on blood physiological indicators, female menstruation, and male ejaculation behavior can be inaccurate. Here, we explored changes in RMs before and after sexual maturation based on multi-omics analysis and identified markers for determining sexual maturity. We found that differentially expressed microbiota, metabolites, and genes before and after sexual maturation showed many potential correlations. Specifically, genes involved in spermatogenesis (TSSK2, HSP90AA1, SOX5, SPAG16, and SPATC1) were up-regulated in male macaques, and significant changes in gene (CD36), metabolites (cholesterol, 7-ketolithocholic acid, and 12-ketolithocholic acid), and microbiota (Lactobacillus) related to cholesterol metabolism were also found, suggesting the sexually mature males have stronger sperm fertility and cholesterol metabolism compared to sexually immature males. In female macaques, most differences before and after sexual maturity were related to tryptophan metabolism, including changes in IDO1, IDO2, IFNGR2, IL1Β, IL10, L-tryptophan, kynurenic acid (KA), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), indoleacetaldehyde, and Bifidobacteria, indicating that sexually mature females exhibit stronger neuromodulation and intestinal immunity than sexually immature females. Cholesterol metabolism-related changes (CD36, 7-ketolithocholic acid, 12-ketolithocholic acid) were also observed in female and male macaques. Exploring differences before and after sexual maturation through multi-omics, we identified potential biomarkers of sexual maturity in RMs, including Lactobacillus (for males) and Bifidobacterium (for females) valuable for RM breeding and sexual maturation research.

ABSTRACTRhesus macaque (RM, Macaca mulatta), as an important model animal, commonly suffers from chronic diarrheal disease, challenging the breeding of RMs. Gut microbiomes play key roles in maintaining intestinal health of RMs. However, it is still unclear about more features of gut microbiome as responsible for intestinal health of RMs. In this study, we performed de novo assembly of metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) based on fecal metagenomes from chronic diarrheal RMs and asymptomatic individuals. In total of 731 non-redundant MAGs with at least 80% completeness were reconstructed in this study. More than 97% MAGs were novel genomes compared with more than 250,000 reference genomes. MAGs of Campylobacter and Helicobacteraceae from RM guts mainly carried flagella-associated virulence genes and chemotaxis-associated virulence genes, which might mediate motility and adhesion of bacteria. Comparing to MAGs of Campylobacter from humans, distributions and functions of these MAGs of Campylobacter from RMs exhibited significant differences. Most members of Bacteroidota, Spirochaetota, Helicobacteraceae, Lactobacillaceae and Anaerovibrio significantly decreased in guts of chronic diarrhea RMs. More than 92% MAGs in this study were not contained in 2,985 MAGs previously reported from other 22 non-human primates (NHPs), expanding the microbial diversity in guts of NHPs. The distributions and functions of gut microbiome were prominently influenced by host phylogeny of NHPs. Our results could help to more clearly understand about the diversity and function of RMs gut microbiome.

Abstract Background As a breast cancer suppressor gene, CLDN6 overexpression was found to inhibit breast cancer metastasis in our previous studies, but the specific mechanism remains unclear. This study aimed to clarify the role and mechanism of CLDN6 in inhibiting breast cancer metastasis. Methods Western blot, immunofluorescence and transmission electron microscopy were performed to detect autophagy. Wound healing, transwell assays and lung metastasis mouse models were used to examine breast cancer metastasis. Phalloidin staining and immunofluorescent staining were used to observe actin cytoskeleton. mRNA seq, RT-PCR, western blot, chromatin immunoprecipitation, dual luciferase reporter assay, co-immunoprecipitation and immunofluorescence were performed to define the molecular mechanism. The expression levels and clinical implication of CLDN6, WIP and LC3 in breast cancer tissues were evaluated using immunohistochemistry. Results We demonstrated that CLDN6 inhibited breast cancer metastasis through autophagy in vitro and vivo. We unraveled a novel mechanism that CLDN6 regulated autophagy via WIP-dependent actin cytoskeleton assembly. Through its PDZ-binding motif, overexpressed CLDN6 interacted with JNK and upregulated JNK/c-Jun pathway. C-Jun promoted WIP expression at the transcriptional level. Notably, we observed c-Jun transcriptionally upregulated CLDN6 expression, and there was a positive feedback loop between CLDN6 and JNK/c-Jun. Finally, we found that CLDN6, WIP and LC3 expression correlated with each other, and WIP expression was significantly associated with lymph node metastasis of breast cancer patients. Conclusions The data provide a new insight into the inhibitory effects of CLDN6-mediated autophagy on breast cancer metastasis, and revealed the new mechanism of CLDN6 regulating autophagy through WIP-dependent actin cytoskeleton. Our findings enrich the theoretical basis for CLDN6 as a potential biomarker for breast cancer diagnosis and therapy.

Intracranial hemangiopericytoma is a rare invasive tumor originating from mesenchymal fibroblasts and is prone to local recurrence and distant metastasis. This study reports a case of a 27-year-old woman who presented with severe headache, nausea and vomiting for two weeks at thirty-three weeks of gestation. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a giant lesion in the bilateral parietal lobe with a size of 5.12x9.19x6.03 cm and severe edema in the surrounding brain tissue. The patient underwent four operations and 3 gamma knife radiosurgery procedures and is recovering well now. The histopathology findings showed hemangiopericytoma and STAT6 and CD34 positivity after the first and second surgeries. Because of tumor progression, the patient received gamma knife radiosurgery at 1, 3, and 4 years after the first operation. Total tumor resection was achieved in the fourth surgery. Nevertheless, the patient showed malignant transformation to from low-grade to high-grade hemangiopericytoma.

Micro-organic contaminants in water have the characteristics of relatively low concentration and degradation, given their stable structures. Ecological balance and human metabolism can be severely affected by their accumulation in the food chain. Besides, extensive human activities and industrialization have accelerated their transmission and accumulation in the environment. So there is an urgent need to treat micro-organic contaminants in water. This review focused on the methods and mechanisms of removing micro-organic contaminants, including biodegradation, advanced oxidation, adsorption, and membrane separation. Notably, the application of membrane separation and its integrated technology in removing micro-organic contaminants, which is less covered in the previous studies. This review also introduced the previous study of developing modified ultrafiltration membranes for simultaneously removing both large- and small-molecule contaminants. These modified ultrafiltration membranes can be applied to remove micro-organic contaminants and are expected to broaden the application of ultrafiltration.

Due to the difference of industrialization degree and meteorological conditions, there are obvious differences in the composition of air pollution between islands and inland areas. With Zhoushan (ZS) and Nanjing (NJ) representing islands and inland cities in the Yangtze River Delta, the differences in vertical distribution of atmospheric components were investigated. A combination of multi-axial differential optical absorption spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS), weather research and forecasting (WRF), and potential source contribution function (PSCF) models were used to obtain vertical distribution data for aerosols, nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and formaldehyde (HCHO), meteorological factors, and pollution sources in summer 2019. The findings indicate that, except for the aerosol extinction coefficient (AE), the atmospheric composition at the ZS site was not significantly stratified. However, the AE, NO2, and HCHO at NJ all displayed a decreasing trend with altitude. Here is the interesting finding that the ZS site has a higher AE value than the NJ site, while NJ displays higher NO2 and HCHO columns than the ZS site. This discrepancy was primarily attributable to Zhoushan City’s extremely low traffic emissions when compared to inland cities. In addition, HCHO in the YRD region was significantly affected by human activities. Analysis of potential pollution sources found that regional transport contributed to differences in atmospheric composition at different altitudes in different regions. Aerosols, NO2, and HCHO in Nanjing were significantly affected by transport in inland areas. Aerosols in Zhoushan were easily affected by transport in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea, and NO2 and HCHO were significantly affected by transport contributions from surrounding areas in inland areas. The study strongly suggests that land and sea breezes play an important role in the vertical distribution of aerosols over island regions.

Urban air pollution has become a regional environmental problem. In order to explore whether island areas were affected by the urban development of surrounding areas, in this paper, we systematically study the vertical distribution characteristics of atmospheric components, meteorological drivers, potential pollution sources, and the population health risks of fine particulate matter in island cities in China. The vertical profiles of three atmospheric pollutants (aerosols, NO2, and HCHO) in the lower troposphere of Huaniao Island in the East China Sea (ECS) were obtained using ground-based multi-axial differential optical absorption spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS). The results show that the aerosol extinction coefficients, NO2, and HCHO were primarily distributed at altitudes below 1 km, and the atmospheric pollutants in Zhoushan were obviously affected by high-altitude transfer. The main meteorological driving factors of aerosols, NO2, and HCHO were different at different altitudes. The key factor contributing to the high column concentrations of NO2 and HCHO in the upper air (greater than 400 m) was the transport of pollutants brought about by changes in wind speed. By exploring the main potential sources of atmospheric pollutants, it was found that the main sources of aerosols, NO2, and HCHO are coastal cities in the Yangtze River Delta, including southeast Zhejiang Province, southeast Fujian Province, Shanghai, ECS, and the Yellow Sea. Compared with aerosols and HCHO, local primary emissions are an important source of NO2, which are mainly related to industrial activities in Zhoushan Port. In addition, using the expose-response function model, the number of attributable cases of PM2.5 air pollution in Zhoushan City in 2019 accounted for 6.58% of the total population. This study enriches our understanding of the vertical distribution characteristics of atmospheric composition and health risk assessment on Chinese islands.

Wind data from air pollutant observation networks and meteorological stations are used to analyze the characteristics of river-land breeze near Tongling city (a main mining city in the Yangtze River Delta). The inhomogeneous distribution of pollutant matters near Tongling city due to river-land breeze is also investigated. Our results show the following conclusions. 1) The river breeze during the daytime is stronger than the land breeze at night. And the speed of river-land breeze is increased rapidly from 7:00 and arrived at the maximum at 12:00. After 15:00, the speed is slowed rapidly. 2) The river-land breeze in city area (east of Yangtze River, speed is .07 m/s) is weaker than the natural area (west of Yangtze River, speed is 0.18 m/s). Furthermore, the seasonal variations of breeze both in the west and east sides are different. In west side, the breeze is strongest in spring. And in the east side, the breeze is strongest in summer. 3) Under a weak breeze (≤0.45 m/s), the PM10 is moved by the breeze within the region and causes the heterogeneity. While with a strong breeze (>0.45 m/s), the PM10 is transported out of the region, and the PM10 concentration becomes homogenous. 4) The river breeze leads to a reduction of the pollutant concentration near the Yangtze River, but an increase in the city due to the transportation of pollutant particles from coast to city at daytime.

Aging is a complex multifactorial process that greatly affects animal health. Multi-omics analysis is widely applied in evolutionary biology and biomedical research. However, whether multi-omics can provide sufficient information to reveal comprehensive changes in aged non-human primates remains unclear. Here, we explored changes in host–microbe interactions with aging in Chinese rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta lasiota, CRs) using multi-omics analysis. Results showed marked changes in the oral and gut microbiomes between young and aged CRs, including significantly reduced probiotic abundance and increased pathogenic bacterial abundance in aged CRs. Notably, the abundance of Lactobacillus, which can metabolize tryptophan to produce aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) ligands, was decreased in aged CRs. Consistently, metabolomics detected a decrease in the plasma levels of AhR ligands. In addition, free fatty acid, acyl carnitine, heparin, 2-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propionic acid, and docosahexaenoic acid ethyl ester levels were increased in aged CRs, which may contribute to abnormal fatty acid metabolism and cardiovascular disease. Transcriptome analysis identified changes in the expression of genes associated with tryptophan metabolism and inflammation. In conclusion, many potential links among different omics were found, suggesting that aged CRs face multiple metabolic problems, immunological disorders, and oral and gut diseases. We determined that tryptophan metabolism is critical for the physiological health of aged CRs. Our findings demonstrate the value of multi-omics analyses in revealing host–microbe interactions in non-human primates and suggest that similar approaches could be applied in evolutionary and ecological research of other species.

Abstract Background We have previously described CLDN6 as a tumor suppressor gene in breast cancer. Here, a new finding is that CLDN6 was upregulated under hypoxia, a commonly recognized factor that promotes tumor metastasis. In this study, we aim to explain this confusing finding and delineate the role of CLDN6 in the breast cancer metastasis induced by hypoxia. Methods RNAi and ChIP assays were used to confirm that CLDN6 is transcriptional regulated by HIF-1α. mRNA seq and KEGG analysis were performed to define the downstream pathways of CLDN6. The roles of the CLDN6/SENP1/HIF-1α signaling on tumor metastasis were evaluated by function experiments and clinical samples. Finally, the possible transcription factor of SENP1 was suspected and then validated by ChIP assay. Results We demonstrated a previously unrecognized negative feedback loop exists between CLDN6 and HIF-1α. CLDN6 was transcriptionally up-regulated by HIF-1α under hypoxia. On the other hand, in cytoplasm CLDN6 combines and retains β-catenin, a transcription factor of SENP1, causing β-catenin degradation and preventing its nuclear translocation. This process reduced SENP1 expression and prevented the deSUMOylation of HIF-1α, ultimately leading to HIF-1α degradation and breast cancer metastasis suppression. Conclusions Our data provide a molecular mechanistic insight indicating that CLDN6 loss may lead to elevated HIF-1α-driven breast cancer metastasis in a SUMOylation-dependent manner.

The solution to environmental problems caused by the generation of construction brick waste is its use as a substitute for natural gravel aggregate in highway base material. The preparation of basalt fiber cement stabilized recycled brick aggregate base material is by adding basalt fiber to cement stabilized recycled waste brick mixture. With the help of nonlateral compressive strength test, indirect tensile (splitting) strength test, and flexural tensile strength test, the influence of basalt fiber with different dosages on the compressive strength, crack resistance, and durability of cement stabilized recycled waste brick mixture was analyzed. The effects of basalt fiber on water loss rate, dry shrinkage strain, and frost resistance of cement stabilized recycled waste brick mixture were analyzed by dry shrinkage test and freeze-thaw test. The bonding morphology of fiber and cement slurry was studied by scanning electron microscopy. The results show that when the waste brick aggregate content is 30% and basalt fiber content is 1‰, the 28-day compressive strength of cement stabilized waste brick mixture is 19% higher than that of the specimen without fiber; indirect tensile strength increased by 36.6%; flexural strength increased by 37.0%; water loss rate decreased by 15.5%; the coherent shrinkage strain decreased by 30.3%; and BDR value (compressive strength loss percentage) increased by 12.3%. Basalt fiber and cement slurry have good bonding force and friction force, which act as tensile reinforcement in the mixture. Fiber bundle and fiber filament compose a fiber network to enwrap the mixture, so that the fiber network and mixture are embedded with each other, thereby improving the mechanical properties and durability of cement stabilized recycled waste brick mixture.

Lime and biochar amendments are widely used to immobilize cadmium (Cd) in agricultural soils and to ensure food security. However, the effects of these two soil amendments on the mechanisms of Cd stress alleviation in crops are unclear. Therefore, the effects of lime and biochar applications on Cd uptake, transport, subcellular distribution, antioxidant system, N metabolism, and related factors were examined in a soil-Brassica napus L. (B. napus) system. We found that lime application significantly increased the root Cd content by 41.5% but decreased Cd TF and shoot Cd by 81.0% and 74.3%, respectively, whereas biochar amendment decreased root and shoot Cd contents by 67.6% and 34.3%, respectively, but increased Cd TF by 104.1%. Lime treatment immobilized Cd in the cell wall of the root to reduce Cd transport, but biochar treatment increased the soluble fraction of Cd in root cells to improve the migration capacity of Cd. The significant negative relationship between the soil exchangeable Cd and Ca and the positive relationships between Cd and Ca both in shoot and root indicated that the Ca mediated Cd transport from soil to B. napus after lime and biochar applications. Additionally, lime amendment increased Cd proportion in the root cell walls to immobilize Cd, but biochar amendment increased Cd proportion in the soluble fraction to enhance Cd migration. Furthermore, biochar application significantly increased SOD, CAT, and POD by 17.5%, 95.4%, and 26.6%, whereas lime amendment only significantly enhanced CAT by 51.0%. Besides, both of biochar and lime applications increased shoot N content and GDH activity, but only the shoot NO3- content and nitrate reductase under biochar treatment were significantly altered. Overall, these findings suggested that lime is more efficient in reducing the transport of Cd from underground to aboveground and in improving Cd tolerance, whereas biochar tends to improve the antioxidant capacity and facilitate N metabolism. These results will provide significant strategies for selecting appropriate amendments to ensure the crops safety.

The purpose is to enhance the recycling utilization rate of old base material and make the cement-stabilized recycled aggregate (RCA) maintain good toughness and crack resistance; rubber particles and basalt fiber admixtures were added to the recycled aggregate. The effects of two different dosages of admixtures on the mechanical properties of the mixture were analyzed; the durability of cement-stabilized base was evaluated; the influence of basalt fiber and rubber particles on the road performance of cement-stabilized recycled aggregate was studied; and scanning electron microscopy was used to analyze the cement-stabilized recycled aggregate mixed with two kinds of admixture. The results show that the increase of basalt fiber dosage improves the mechanical properties of the mixture. The dry shrinkage strain of the mixture decreases, and the frost resistance coefficient increases, indicating that the increase of rubber particles improves the durability of the mixture. When the rubber particles dosage is 0.5%, the basalt fiber dosage is 0.1%, and the recycled aggregate dosage is 50%, the comprehensive rode performance of the mixture is the best. Rubber particles can effectively improve the frost resistance and dry shrinkage of the mixture through its own deformation and shrinkage without damage and slow down the tensile stress caused by dry shrinkage and the compressive stress caused by frost heave. The easy bonding effect of basalt fiber and its pullout effect in the mixture increase the compressive strength and dry shrinkage resistance of the mixture.

Polyaspartic acid (PASP) is a macromolecule compound with carboxylic acid side chains which is polymerized by L-aspartic acid, has been used as a biodegradable and environmentally-friendly chelating agent to enhance the phytoremediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils. Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic element for plant growth, productivity, and food security. To reveal the responses of PASP to plant physiology and morphology under Cd stress, we comprehensively analyzed soil characteristics, cell ultrastructure, reactive oxygen species (ROS), antioxidant enzymes, Cd uptake, transport, subcellular distribution, cell wall compositions, and their Cd chelating capacity in rapeseed. The results showed PASP increased the content of total N, total P, and available P in soil by 3.4%, 28.6%, and 39.8%, respectively, but did not change soil pH and available Cd. Meanwhile, PASP promoted dry mass accumulation and increased photosynthetic pigment content in rapeseed leaves by maintaining the chloroplast structure. Lower malondialdehyde (MDA) content and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) accumulation and activated antioxidant enzymes in leaves indicate that PASP contributed to relieving Cd-induced oxidative damage to cells of rapeseed leaves. The results indicated that PASP application increased the Cd distribution ratio in root cell walls from 47.4% to 62.3% and decreased the Cd content in xylem sap by 37.8%, which ultimately reduced Cd reallocation in leaves. Additionally, higher pectin content and Cd in pectin resulted in higher Cd retention in leaf cell walls while reducing its concentration in the organelle fraction. The results indicated that 0.3% PASP effectively alleviated Cd stress in rapeseed leaves by inhibiting Cd transportation from roots, activating antioxidant enzymes to scavenge ROS, and promoting Cd chelation by cell wall pectin in leaves.

Studying the characteristics of new particle formation (NPF) is conducive to exploring the impact of atmospheric particulate matter on the climate, environment, and human health. The particle number size distributions (5.6–560 nm) of aerosols were measured using a fast mobility particle sizer (FMPS) from 1 to 11 May 2019. The clean atmosphere was one of the basic conditions for the occurrence of this continuous new particle formation events. It started between 9:00 and 12:00, and it mainly ended after 20:00. The growth rate (GR) and condensation sink (CS) values in Hefei were 2.98 ± 0.97 nm·h−1 and (3.0 ± 0.4) × 10−2 s−1, respectively. Back trajectory clustering analysis revealed that the mass concentration of the air masses from the southeastern part of Henan Province and the southern part of Anhui Province surrounding the study area were relatively high. The analysis results of the potential source contribution function (PSCF) and the concentration weighted trajectory (CWT) methods show that in addition to local pollution, the long-distance transport of pollutants in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) greatly contributed to the accumulation modal particulate concentration in Hefei. Moreover, the population affected by PM2.5 during the observation period reached 8.19 × 104, accounting for 1.08% to the total population in Hefei. The premature death cases associated with PM2.5 reached 8.35 × 102. This study is helpful to understand the main influencing factors of consecutive NPF events and the health risks of fine particles.

Abstract Background Estrogen receptor β (ERβ) has been reported to play an anti-cancer role in breast cancer, but the regulatory mechanism by which ERβ exerts this effect is not clear. Claudin-6 (CLDN6), a tight junction protein, acts as a tumor suppressor gene in breast cancer. Our previous studies have found that 17β-estradiol (E2) induces CLDN6 expression and inhibits MCF-7 cell migration and invasion, but the underlying molecular mechanisms are still unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the role of ERβ in this process and the regulatory mechanisms involved. Methods Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and western blot were used to characterize the effect of E2 on the expression of CLDN6 in breast cancer cells. Chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assays were carried out to confirm the interaction between ERβ and CLDN6. Dual luciferase reporter assays were used to detect the regulatory role of ERβ on the promoter activity of CLDN6. Wound healing and Transwell assays were used to examine the migration and invasion of breast cancer cells. Western blot, immunofluorescence and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were performed to detect autophagy. Xenograft mouse models were used to explore the regulatory effect of the CLDN6-beclin1 axis on breast cancer metastasis. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was used to detect ERβ/CLDN6/beclin1 expression in breast cancer patient samples. Results Here, E2 upregulated the expression of CLDN6, which was mediated by ERβ. ERβ regulated CLDN6 expression at the transcriptional level. ERβ inhibited the migration and invasion of breast cancer cells through CLDN6. Interestingly, this effect was associated with CLDN6-induced autophagy. CLDN6 positively regulated the expression of beclin1, which is a key regulator of autophagy. Beclin1 knockdown reversed CLDN6-induced autophagy and the inhibitory effect of CLDN6 on breast cancer metastasis. Moreover, ERβ and CLDN6 were positively correlated, and the expression of CLDN6 was positively correlated with beclin1 in breast cancer tissues. Conclusion Overall, this is the first study to demonstrate that the inhibitory effect of ERβ on the migration and invasion of breast cancer cells was mediated by CLDN6, which induced the beclin1-dependent autophagic cascade.

Background: The mixed-cultivation of different Panax ginseng cultivars can cause adverse effects on stability of yield and quality. K-1 is a superior cultivar with good root shape and stronger disease resistance. DNA markers mined from functional genes are clearly desirable for K-1, as they may associate with major traits and can be used for marker-assisted selection to maintain the high quality of Korean ginseng. Methods: Five genes encoding pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins of P. ginseng were amplified and compared for polymorphism mining. Primary, secondary, and tertiary structures of PR5 protein were analyzed by ExPASy-ProtParam, PSSpred, and I-TASSER methods, respectively. A coding single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)–based specific primer was designed for K-1 by introducing a destabilizing mismatch within the 3′ end. Allele-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and real-time allele-specific PCR assays were conducted for molecular discrimination of K-1 from other cultivars and landraces. Results: A coding SNP leading to the modification of amino acid residue from aspartic acid to asparagine was exploited in PR5 gene of K-1 cultivar. Bioinformatics analysis showed that the modification of amino acid residue changed the secondary and tertiary structures of the PR5 protein. Primer KSR was designed for specific discrimination of K-1 from other ginseng cultivars and landraces. The developed real-time allele-specific PCR assay enabled easier automation and accurate genotyping of K-1 from a large number of ginseng samples. Conclusion: The SNP marker and the developed real-time allele-specific PCR assay will be useful not only for marker-assisted selection of K-1 cultivar but also for quality control in breeding and seed programs of P. ginseng. Abstract Background Self-renewal is dependent on an intrinsic gene regulatory network centered on OCT4 and on an atypical cell cycle G1/S transition, which is also regulated by OCT4. p21, a gene negatively associated with self-renewal and a senescence marker, is a member of the universal cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors (CDKIs) and plays critical roles in the regulation of the G1/S transition. The expression of p21 can be regulated by OCT4-targeted DNA methyltransferases (DNMTs), which play distinct roles in gene regulation and maintaining pluripotency properties. The aim of this study was to determine the role of OCT4 in the regulation of self-renewal and senescence in human hair follicle mesenchymal stem cells (hHFMSCs) and to characterize the molecular mechanisms involved. Methods A lentiviral vector was used to ectopically express OCT4. The influences of OCT4 on the self-renewal and senescence of hHFMSCs were investigated. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) was performed to identify the downstream genes of OCT4 in this process. Methylation-specific PCR (MSP) analysis was performed to measure the methylation level of the p21 promoter region. p21 was overexpressed in hHFMSCsOCT4 to test its downstream effect on OCT4. The regulatory effect of OCT4 on DNMTs was examined by ChIP assay. 5-aza-dC/zebularine was used to inhibit the expression of DNMTs, and then self-renewal properties and senescence in hHFMSCs were detected. Results The overexpression of OCT4 promoted proliferation, cell cycle progression, and osteogenic differentiation capacity of hHFMSCs. The cell senescence of hHFMSCs was markedly suppressed due to the ectopic expression of OCT4. Through NGS, we identified 2466 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between hHFMSCsOCT4 and hHFMSCsEGFP, including p21, which was downregulated. The overexpression of p21 abrogated the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation capacity of hHFMSCsOCT4 and promoted cell senescence. OCT4 enhanced the transcription of DNMT genes, leading to an elevation in the methylation of the p21 promoter. The inhibition of DNMTs reversed the OCT4-induced p21 reduction, depleted the self-renewal of hHFMSCsOCT4, and triggered cell senescence. Conclusions OCT4 maintains the self-renewal ability of hHFMSCs and reverses senescence by suppressing the expression of p21 through the upregulation of DNMTs.

This paper proposes a new navigation modulation based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). We derived the autocorrelation function and power spectral density of the OFDM modulation. The influence of the cyclic prefix and zero-padding is discussed. The influence of OFDM modulation parameters on navigation signal performance was deeply analyzed, which can help signal designers choose the OFDM parameters. The main peak of the proposed autocorrelation function is narrow and has good tracking accuracy. The sidelobe is lower, and the delay locking loop is more robust. The power spectrum density is evenly distributed in the main lobe of the signal, and the anti-interference is good. By comparing OFDM navigation signals with other navigation signals, it can be found that OFDM navigation signals have good tracking accuracy and a strong anti-interference ability. Combined with the proposed navigation modulation and communication signal, the OFDM navigation signal has a low bit error rate for the communication signal and has a good communication integration potential, which can meet the business requirements of the future communication and navigation integration market.

Abstract Ozone pollution adversely affects human health. In recent years, ozone pollution has become an important research topic and a challenge. By combining differential absorption lidar (DIAL), meteorological gradient tower data, the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, and the backward trajectories model, changes in vertical ozone concentration, the influencing factors on ozone vertical distribution, and ozone sources were analyzed in Shenzhen from September 20 to 30, 2019. Results indicated that from September 25 to 30, there was obvious residual ozone and transport at night. The analysis of ozone concentration and meteorological factors shows that the temperatures of 291.3–301.8 K and the humidity of 19.4%–71.6% were conducive to ozone formation. As height increased from less than 0.1–0.3 km, the average ozone concentration increased, and the average NO2 concentration decreased. The analysis of potential ozone sources showed that ozone was mainly transported from the northeast of China and that the highest concentration of ozone mainly comes from southeast of Jiangxi province in southeastern China.

Abstract Electroreduction of CO2 to formic acid (ERCF) based on gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) has been considered as a promising method to convert CO2 into value-added chemicals. However, current GDEs for ERCF suffer from low efficiency of electron transfer. In this work, a novel Sn-based gas diffusion electrode (ESGDE) is prepared by electrodepositing Sn on Nafion-bonded carbon black as catalyst layer to enhance electron transfer and thus the efficiency of ERCF. The highest Faraday efficiency (73.01 ± 3.42%), current density (34.21 ± 1.14 mA cm−2) and production rate (1772.81 ± 59.08 μmol m−2 s−1) of formic acid are obtained by using the ESGDE with electrodeposition time of 90 s in 0.5 M KHCO3 solution, which are one of the highest values obtained from Sn-based gas diffusion electrodes under similar conditions. The notable efficiency of ERCF achieved here should be attributed to the enhancement in the reactants transfer as well as the three-dimensional reaction zone. This work will be helpful for the industrial application of GDEs in EFCF.

This paper focuses on the problem of lung nodule image classification, which plays a key role in lung cancer early diagnosis. In this work, we propose a novel model for lung nodule image feature representation that incorporates both local and global characters. First, lung nodule images are divided into local patches with Superpixel. Then these patches are transformed into fixed-length local feature vectors using unsupervised deep autoencoder (DAE). The visual vocabulary is constructed based on the local features and bag of visual words (BOVW) is used to describe the global feature representation of lung nodule image. Finally, softmax algorithm is employed for lung nodule type classification, which can assemble the whole training process as an end-to-end mode. Comprehensive evaluations are conducted on the widely used public available ELCAP lung image database. Experimental results with regard to different parameter setting, data augmentation, model sparsity, classifier algorithms, and model ensemble validate the effectiveness of our proposed approach.

Lung cancer is one of the most deadly diseases around the world representing about 26% of all cancers in 2017. The five-year cure rate is only 18% despite great progress in recent diagnosis and treatment. Before diagnosis, lung nodule classification is a key step, especially since automatic classification can help clinicians by providing a valuable opinion. Modern computer vision and machine learning technologies allow very fast and reliable CT image classification. This research area has become very hot for its high efficiency and labor saving. The paper aims to draw a systematic review of the state of the art of automatic classification of lung nodules. This research paper covers published works selected from the Web of Science, IEEEXplore, and DBLP databases up to June 2018. Each paper is critically reviewed based on objective, methodology, research dataset, and performance evaluation. Mainstream algorithms are conveyed and generic structures are summarized. Our work reveals that lung nodule classification based on deep learning becomes dominant for its excellent performance. It is concluded that the consistency of the research objective and integration of data deserves more attention. Moreover, collaborative works among developers, clinicians, and other parties should be strengthened.

In order to improve the seismic performance of adjacent buildings, two types of tuned inerter damper (TID) damping systems for adjacent buildings are proposed, which are composed of springs, inerter devices and dampers in serial or in parallel. The dynamic equations of TID adjacent building damping systems were derived, and the H2 norm criterion was used to optimize and adjust them, so that the system had the optimum damping performance under white noise random excitation. Taking TID frequency ratio and damping ratio as optimization parameters, the optimum analytical solutions of the displacement frequency response of the undamped structure under white noise excitation were obtained. The results showed that compared with the classic TMD, TID could obtain a better damping effect in the adjacent buildings. Comparing the TIDs composed of serial or parallel, it was found that the parallel TIDs had more significant advantages in controlling the peak displacement frequency response, while the H2 norm of the displacement frequency response of the damping system under the coupling of serial TID was smaller. Taking the adjacent building composed of two ten-story frame structures as an example, the displacement and energy collection time history analysis of the adjacent building coupled with the optimum design parameter TIDs were carried out. It was found that TID had a better damping effect in the full-time range compared with the classic TMD.
