Abstract Peritoneal recurrence (PR) in gastric cancer after curative resection has poor prognosis. Therefore, we aimed to construct a nomogram to predict PR, and establish PR score for risk stratification to guide adjuvant chemotherapy. A total of 315 patients with gastric cancer after radical surgery were included, and randomly stratified into training group (n = 221) and validation group (n = 94). Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to determine predictive factors of PR. The nomogram was constructed to predict the risk of PR. We utilized the time-dependent area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves (AUCs), calibration curves, and decision curve analysis (DCA) to evaluate the performance of the nomogram. Multivariate analysis showed that tumor site, N stage, preoperative CEA, and postoperative CA199 were independent predictors of PR. A nomogram was constructed to predict PR based on these factors. The AUC value was 0.755 in the training group and 0.715 in the validation group. The calibration curves showed good agreement between prediction and observation in the training and validation groups. The decision curve analysis displayed a good net benefit of the nomogram. The novel PR score was developed and patients were stratified into the low-, medium-, and high -risk groups. For the high-risk group, postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy significantly improved patients' overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). The establishment of nomogram facilitates the prediction of PR after radical gastrectomy, and a novel PR score may help guide adjuvant chemotherapy for gastric cancer.

Abstract Background Nonfusion technologies, such as motion-preservation devices, have begun a new era of treatment options in spine surgery. Motion-preservation approaches mainly include total disc replacement for anterior cervical discectomy and fusion. However, for multisegment fusion, such as anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion, the options are more limited. Therefore, we designed a novel 3D-printed motion-preservation artificial cervical corpectomy construct (ACCC) for multisegment fusion. The aim of this study was to explore the feasibility of ACCC in a goat model. Methods Goats were treated with anterior C3 corpectomy and ACCC implantation and randomly divided into two groups evaluated at 3 or 6 months. Radiography, 3D CT reconstruction and MRI evaluations were performed. Biocompatibility was evaluated using micro-CT and histology. Results Postoperatively, all goats were in good condition, with free neck movement. Implant positioning was optimal. The relationship between facet joints was stable. The range of motion of the C2-C4 segments during flexion–extension at 3 and 6 months postoperatively was 7.8° and 7.3°, respectively. The implants were wrapped by new bone tissue, which had grown into the porous structure. Cartilage tissue, ossification centres, new blood vessels, and bone mineralization were observed at the porous metal vertebrae-bone interface and in the metal pores. Conclusions The ACCC provided stabilization while preserving the motion of the functional spinal unit and promoting bone regeneration and vascularization. In this study, the ACCC was used for anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion (ACCF) in a goat model. We hope that this study will propel further research of motion-preservation devices.

BackgroundMicroRNAs (miRNAs) in Schwann cells (SCs) mediate peripheral nerve function. Ablating Dicer, a key gene in miRNA biogenesis, in SCs causes peripheral neuropathy. Exosomes from healthy SCs (SC-Exo) ameliorate diabetic peripheral neuropathy in part via miRNAs. Thus, using transgenic mice with conditional and inducible ablation of Dicer in proteolipid protein (PLP) expressing SCs (PLP-cKO), we examined whether SC-Exo could reduce peripheral neuropathy in PLP-cKO mice.MethodsPLP-cKO mice at the age of 16 weeks (8 week post-Tamoxifen) were randomly treated with SC-Exo or saline weekly for 8 weeks. Age-and sex-matched wild-type (WT) littermates were used as controls. Peripheral neurological functions, sciatic nerve integrity, and myelination were analyzed. Quantitative RT-PCR and Western blot analyses were performed to examine miRNA and protein expression in sciatic nerve tissues, respectively.ResultsCompared to the WT mice, PLP-cKO mice exhibited a significant decrease in motor and sensory conduction velocities, thermal sensitivity, and motor coordination. PLP-cKO mice exhibited substantial demyelination and axonal damage of the sciatic nerve. Treatment of PLP-cKO mice with SC-Exo significantly ameliorated the peripheral neuropathy and sciatic nerve damage. PLP-cKO mice showed a substantial reduction in a set of Dicer-related miRNAs known to regulate myelination, axonal integrity, and inflammation such as miR-138, −146a and − 338 in the sciatic nerve. In addition, PLP-cKO mice exhibited significant reduction of myelin forming proteins, early growth response 2 (EGR2) and sex determining region Y-box10 (Sox10), but significantly increased myelination inhibitors, Notch1, c-Jun, and Sox2 and the axonal growth inhibitor phosphatase and tens in homolog (PTEN). However, SC-Exo treatment reversed the PLP-cKO altered miRNAs and proteins.ConclusionThis study demonstrates that exogenous SC-Exo ameliorate peripheral neuropathy induced by Dicer ablation in PLP expressing SCs. The therapeutic benefit may be mediated by the SC-Exo altered miRNAs and their targeted genes.

The ejector refrigeration technology driven by low-grade heat sources constitutes as one of the crucial means to solve the energy shortage in present-day society and to reduce the global environmental pollution. Thermodynamics ejector models are the basis of performance prediction, system control and structural design in ejector refrigeration systems driven by low-grade heat sources. However, the majority of present ejector models are unable to simultaneously meet the general feasibility of full operating conditions and the level of prediction accuracy for improving the energy efficiency of the refrigeration system. In this study, a novel theoretical model of ejectors is successfully derived based on the foundation of compound-choking theory and gas dynamic relations, which easily predicts the entrainment performance under the on-design and off-design conditions in ejector refrigeration systems. Indeed, a direct solution algorithm is presented to quickly and accurately solve this model and a linear correlation is employed between the mixing loss coefficient and the back pressure at the subcritical mode. The developed model is verified with experimental results in R245fa, R134a and R600a ejector refrigeration system. The results show that the model provides a precise estimation of the entrainment performance with the mean relative errors of 2.45 %, 5.49 % and 3.67 % for R245fa, R134a and R600a refrigerants at full working conditions, while the prediction of critical condensing temperatures is considerably approximated by the experimental measurements. In the comparative analysis with the previous model, this model demonstrates a superior prediction performance, especially in the subcritical mode using the linear function mixing loss coefficient. This study will be a valuable aid in the improvement of energy efficiency in ejector refrigeration systems.

Background Exercise therapy can effectively manage chronic kidney disease (CKD) risk factors and improve renal function and physical fitness, but the challenge lies in choosing the right exercise type tailored to patients’ condition.Methods An electronic search of databases including PubMed, The Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Web of Science, VIP, WanFang, and CNKI was performed. The random effects model was used. Mean difference was employed as the effect size for continuous variables, with 95% confidence interval (CI) provided.Results A total of 36 RCTs were included in this study. Compared to conventional therapy (CT), the combination of three exercise therapies with CT resulted in notable benefits in enhancing six minutes walk test (6MWT) capacity, 24-h urinary protein quantity (24hUTP), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP). Resistance exercise therapy (RT) + CT were more effective than CT to reduce serum creatinine (Scr), body mass index (BMI), and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and improve estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). In terms of improving peak oxygen uptake (VO2 peak), only two exercise modalities were involved, aerobic exercise therapy (AT) and combined (Resistance-Aerobic) exercise therapy (CBT), both of which were more efficacious than CT. The efficacy ranking overall demonstrated clear benefits for RT in enhancing eGFR and 6MWT, decreasing Scr, BMI, SBP, DBP, and HbA1c, while AT was more suitable for boosting VO2 peak, and CBT had greater potential for reducing 24hUTP.Conslusions Exercise therapy combined with CT offers significant advantages over CT in many cases, but no single exercise modality is universally effective for all indicators.

ObjectiveThis study aimed to develop and validate a survival prediction model and nomogram to predict survival in patients with advanced gastric or gastroesophageal junction (G/GEJ) adenocarcinoma undergoing treatment with anti-programmed cell death 1 receptor (PD-1). This model incorporates immune-related adverse events (irAEs) alongside common clinical characteristics as predictive factors.MethodA dataset comprising 255 adult patients diagnosed with advanced G/GEJ adenocarcinoma was assembled. The irAEs affecting overall survival (OS) to a significant degree were identified and integrated as a candidate variable, together with 12 other candidate variables. These included gender, age, Eastern cooperative oncology group performance status (ECOG PS) score, tumor stage, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) expression status, presence of peritoneal and liver metastases, year and line of anti-PD-1 treatment, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), controlling nutritional status (CONUT) score, and Charlson comorbidity index (CCI). To mitigate timing bias related to irAEs, landmark analysis was employed. Variable selection was performed using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression to pinpoint significant predictors, and the variance inflation factor was applied to address multicollinearity. Subsequently, a Cox regression analysis utilizing the forward likelihood ratio method was conducted to develop a survival prediction model, excluding variables that failed to satisfy the proportional hazards (PH) assumption. The model was developed using the entire dataset, then internally validated through bootstrap resampling and externally validated with a cohort from another Hospital. Furthermore, a nomogram was created to delineate the predictive model.ResultsAfter consolidating irAEs from the skin and endocrine systems into a single protective irAE category and applying landmark analysis, variable selection was conducted for the prognostic prediction model along with other candidate variables. The finalized model comprised seven variables: ECOG PS score, tumor stage, HER2 expression status in tumor tissue, first-line anti-PD-1 treatment, peritoneal metastasis, CONUT score, and protective irAE. The overall concordance index for the model was 0.66. Calibration analysis verified the model’s accuracy in aligning predicted outcomes with actual results. Clinical decision curve analysis indicated that utilizing this model for treatment decisions could enhance the net benefit regarding 1- and 2-year survival rates for patients.ConclusionThis study developed a prognostic prediction model by integrating common clinical characteristics of irAEs and G/GEJ adenocarcinoma. This model exhibits good clinical practicality and possesses accurate predictive ability for overall survival OS in patients with advanced G/GEJ adenocarcinoma.

BackgroundTo investigate the effectiveness and safety of maintenance regimens based on cetuximab, we conducted a real-world, single-arm, retrospective study at a single center.MethodsIn Fujian Medical University Union Hospital, patients with unresectable metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) who received cetuximab-based maintenance therapy between December 2020 and December 2021 were included. All patients had RAS and BRAF wild-type. The maintenance regimen consisted of 6–12 cycles of cetuximab plus irinotecan (Phase 1) and cetuximab (Phase 2). Patients could receive reintroduction therapy in case of disease progression during Phase 2. Progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and safety data were collected.ResultsAccording to the inclusion and exclusion criteria of the study, a total of 108 subjects who received maintenance therapy were included— 51 experienced disease progression during Phase 1, with PFS (1) of 7.3 months. Among the 52 patients who entered Phase 2, 17 were still in this phase at the end of follow-up, with PFS (2) of 10.1 months. In Phase 2, 35 patients experienced disease progression, of whom 24 received reintroduction therapy, with PFS (3) of 6.7 months. The overall PFS (total) during the maintenance period was 11.9 months, and the OS was 39.2 months. Grade III or higher adverse events were 4.6% during Phase 1 and 0% during Phase 2.ConclusionInnovative cetuximab-based maintenance therapy showed a trend toward improving the prognosis of mCRC patients with RAS and BRAF wild-type, while the toxic side effects of maintenance therapy were manageable.Clinical trial registrationhttps://www.chictr.org.cn, identifier ChiCTR2000040940.

In the era of big data and the rapid development of sensor technology, the time series classification problem has become an important research direction in the field of data mining. The complexity and diversity of time series data itself may lead to the inconsistency of the distribution between the training set and the test set, and this distribution difference may cause significant fluctuations in the model performance in practical applications. In contrast, domain adaptation models aim to adapt to test data with different distributions from the training data to improve the model performance. To address this challenge, we propose the Au-RAINCOAT model based on the RAINCOAT model, which is a closed-set domain adaptation model for complex time series. The model first considers the introduction of an Auto-Correlation mechanism module, which aims to compensate for the shortcomings of the Fourier transform by capturing local information while improving the computational efficiency. Second, to avoid the stability problems associated with the choice of regularization parameters in Sinkhorn divergence, we choose to use the Proxy-A-Distance(PAD).In this paper, we use four common datasets such as WISDM, HAR, HHAR, Sleep-EDF, and experiments are conducted on seven models. The experimental results show that the method has better results on the four datasets.

Abstract Lichens are of great ecological importance but mechanisms regulating lichen symbiosis are not clear. Umbilicaria muhlenbergii is a lichen-forming fungus amenable to molecular manipulations and dimorphic. Here, we established conditions conducive to symbiotic interactions and lichen differentiation and showed the importance of UMP1 MAP kinase in lichen development. In the initial biofilm-like symbiotic complexes, algal cells were interwoven with pseudohyphae covered with extracellular matrix. After longer incubation, fungal-algal complexes further differentiated into primitive lichen thalli with a melanized cortex-like and pseudoparenchyma-like tissues containing photoactive algal cells. Mutants deleted of UMP1 were blocked in pseudohyphal growth and development of biofilm-like complexes and primitive lichens. Invasion of dividing mother cells that contributes to algal layer organization in lichens was not observed in the ump1 mutant. Overall, these results showed regulatory roles of UMP1 in symbiotic interactions and lichen development and suitability of U. muhlenbergii as a model for studying lichen symbiosis.

This paper evaluates the influence of different variables on drivers’ willingness to accept and use a vehicle-mounted perfume automatic dispersal device (VP-ADD) connected to the vehicle’s electronic map. Based on the technical acceptance model, we clarify and condense the explanation of the model used to evaluate the impact of user behavior attitudes and device characteristics on six factors, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attitude towards use, intention to use, perceived playfulness, and perceived risk, proposing eight hypotheses. Then, we assessed the responses of 562 drivers in China using SPSS for reliability and validity and AMOS for structural equation modeling to test our hypotheses. The findings reveal that the perceived usefulness, ease of use, playfulness, and risk significantly affected the willingness to accept and use the VP-ADD. Furthermore, the perceived risk has a negative influence, while the perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, perceived playfulness, and attitude towards use have a positive influence. This research is significant for further development and application of the VP-ADD. It is essential to alleviate driver fatigue, ensure traffic safety, and provide theoretical and empirical support for designing more popular driving assistance devices. Furthermore, it offers valuable insights for developing fatigue driving warning policies, in-vehicle device guidelines, and traffic safety regulations.

Abstract Background The cerebellum plays key roles in the pathology of multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), but the way in which these conditions affect how the cerebellum communicates with the rest of the brain (its connectome) and associated genetic correlates remains largely unknown. Methods Combining multimodal MRI data from 208 MS patients, 200 NMOSD patients and 228 healthy controls and brain-wide transcriptional data, this study characterized convergent and divergent alterations in within-cerebellar and cerebello-cerebral morphological and functional connectivity in MS and NMOSD, and further explored the association between the connectivity alterations and gene expression profiles. Results Despite numerous common alterations in the two conditions, diagnosis-specific increases in cerebellar morphological connectivity were found in MS within the cerebellar secondary motor module, and in NMOSD between cerebellar primary motor module and cerebral motor- and sensory-related areas. Both diseases also exhibited decreased functional connectivity between cerebellar motor modules and cerebral association cortices with MS-specific decreases within cerebellar secondary motor module and NMOSD-specific decreases between cerebellar motor modules and cerebral limbic and default-mode regions. Transcriptional data explained > 37.5% variance of the cerebellar functional alterations in MS with the most correlated genes enriched in signaling and ion transport-related processes and preferentially located in excitatory and inhibitory neurons. For NMOSD, similar results were found but with the most correlated genes also preferentially located in astrocytes and microglia. Finally, we showed that cerebellar connectivity can help distinguish the three groups from each other with morphological connectivity as predominant features for differentiating the patients from controls while functional connectivity for discriminating the two diseases. Conclusions We demonstrate convergent and divergent cerebellar connectome alterations and associated transcriptomic signatures between MS and NMOSD, providing insight into shared and unique neurobiological mechanisms underlying these two diseases.

Objective: To investigate the associations between exposure to ambient air pollutants and birthweight following ART treatment. Design: Retrospective cohort study. Methods: We included 11,599 singletons derived from fresh cycles or frozen-thawed embryo transfer (FET) cycles between Jan 2013 and Dec 2019. Exposure to six air pollutants (SO2, NO2, CO, O3, PM2.5, and PM10) at patients` residences and the clinic site were estimated using the inverse distance weighting interpolation method based on data obtained from monitor sites. The daily mean levels of pollutants were estimated in potential exposure windows (the period from three months before treatment to oocyte retrieval, the period of ovarian stimulation, the period of in vitro culture, the period from embryo transfer to hCG test, the period of entire pregnancy, the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd trimester) were calculated. Generalized additive models adjusted for confounders including maternal age, BMI, and parity were used to evaluate the association between exposures and birthweight. Interaction of exposures and ART-associated factors, such as supraphysiologic estradiol and frozen-thawed, were explored in an XGboost model. Main outcome measures: Birthweight and z-score of singletons. Results: In fresh cycles, O3 exposure during the period from three months before treatment to oocyte retrieval and SO2 exposure during in vitro culture at the ART clinic showed a linear association with birthweight (7.24, 95% CI: 1.18–13.31 g per 10 μg/m3 increase in O3; 25.92, 95% CI: 8.26–43.58 g per 10 μg/m3 increase in SO2, respectively). For patients receiving single blastocyst transfer with exposures below the China standard of 20 μg/m3, an increase of 10 μg/m3 in SO2 was associated with a 61.52 (95% CI: 1.13–121.91) g increase in birthweight. In FET cycles, no significant association was found between air pollution and birthweight. XGboost model did not reveal a strong interaction between the exposures and ART-related factors, except for the interactions between O3 exposure and BMI. However, none of the interactions reached a higher rank of importance. Conclusions: Air pollution exposure during ART treatment may affect the birthweight of the offspring.

Abstract Background Variations in the red blood cell (RBC) lifespan can affect glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) test values, but there is still a lack of evidence regarding how and to what degree the RBC lifespan influences HbA1c in the type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) population owing to the restriction of traditional RBC lifespan–detection means. Abstract Traditional Bas-relief modeling methods are often limited to inefficient and difficult to be altered after the product is formed. This paper presents a novel method for bas-relief modeling from RGB monocular images with regional division characteristics. The problem discussed in this paper involves edge detection, region division, height value recovery and three-dimensional reconstruction of image. In our framework, we can automatically obtain the pixel height of each area in the image and can adjust the concave–convex relationship of each image area to obtain a bas-relief modeling which can be printed directly in 3D. The edge detection algorithm used Gaussian difference pyramid to combine the luminance information and chrominance information of digital image; the regions of the RGB monocular image are divided by the improved connected-component labeling algorithm;and the 3D pixel point cloud of each region is calculated by the shape-from-shading algorithm. Different from previous work, our method can fully obtain the image height field data and completely restored the depth information,which makes it possible to use any RGB monocular image for bas-relief modeling. Experiments with groups of images show that our method can effectively generate bas-relief modeling.

Abstract Background To evaluate the effectiveness of individualized-dose polyethylene glycol recombinant human growth hormone (PEG-rhGH) for short stature. Methods This real-world study enrolled children with short stature in 19 hospitals throughout China. They were treated with PEG-rhGH for 6 months. The starting dosage ranged from 0.10 to 0.20 mg/kg/week. The primary outcome was the change in height standard deviation score (ΔHt SDS). Results Five hundred and ten patients were included and grouped based on dosage as A (0.10–0.14 mg/kg/week), B (0.15–0.16 mg/kg/week), C (0.17–0.19 mg/kg/week), and D (0.20 mg/kg/week). The mean 6-month ΔHt SDS for the total cohort was 0.49 ± 0.27, and the means differed among the four dose groups (P = 0.002). The ΔHt SDS was lower in group A than in groups B (LSM difference [95%CI], -0.09 [-0.17, -0.01]), C (LSM difference [95%CI], -0.10 [-0.18, -0.02]), and D (LSM difference [95%CI], -0.13 [-0.21, -0.05]) after adjusting baseline covariates. There were no significant differences among groups B, C, and D. When the baseline IGF-1 was 0 SDS, the △Ht SDS was not different among the four groups (P = 0.931 and P = 0.400). In children with baseline IGF-1 SDS of -2 ~ 0 SDS, a higher dosage was associated with a better treatment effect (P = 0.003), and the △Ht SDS was lower in older children than in younger ones (P

Objective To observe the effects of high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) infection on P53, pRb, and survivin in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). Methods The cancerous and cancer-adjacent tissues of 102 patients with LUAD from January 2020 to April 2022 were selected for the study. HR-HPV infection was detected by flow fluorescence method, and P53, pRb, and survivin protein expression was detected by immunohistochemical staining method. Statistical analysis was performed to determine the differences in the HR-HPV infection and the expression of P53, pRb, and survivin proteins between LUAD tissues and cancer-adjacent tissues; the correlation between HR-HPV infection and P53, pRb, and survivin protein expression in cancer tissues; and the correlation between HR-HPV infection and clinicopathological features of LUAD. Results The infection rate of HR-HPV was higher in the LUAD tissues (28.43%) than in cancer-adjacent tissues (7.84%), and the difference was statistically significant (P 0.05). BackgroundIt is unknown whether ER(-)/PR(+) breast cancer is an independent breast cancer subtype, how it differs from other subtypes, and what its significance is regarding treatment and prognosis. This study compared ER(-)/PR(+) breast cancer with other subtypes to better understand the biological characteristics and prognosis of ER(-)/PR(+) breast cancer, to guide clinical treatment and establish a theoretical foundation.MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed data for patients diagnosed with breast cancer in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. The clinicopathological characteristics of ER(-)/PR(+) breast cancer, including age, tumor size, lymph node status, HER-2 status, pathological type and histological grade, were compared with other types of breast cancer. A risk scoring system was developed based on independent risk factors influencing prognosis to predict the patient’s prognosis, and a nomogram model was created to predict the patient’s survival rate. Abstract Background Nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) and intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (ICAS) are major causes of ischemic stroke. Relatively few studies have focused on the risk factors and clinical features of ischemic stroke caused by NVAF combined with ICAS. Method We retrospectively evaluated NVAF and/or ICAS in patients with acute ischemic stroke admitted within 72 h after stroke. All patients with acute ischemic stroke underwent diffusion‐weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI), magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), computed tomography angiography (CTA), and/or digital subtraction angiography (DSA). NVAF was detected by routine electrocardiogram or 24‐h Holter examination, Doppler echocardiography, and contrast echocardiography of the right heart. Summary: The impairment of antibody-mediated immunity is a major factor associated with fatal cases of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS). By collating the clinical diagnosis reports of 30 SFTS cases, we discovered the overproliferation of monoclonal plasma cells (MCP cells, CD38+cLambda+cKappa−) in bone marrow, which has only been reported previously in multiple myeloma. The ratio of CD38+cLambda+ versus CD38+cKappa+ in SFTS cases with MCP cells was significantly higher than that in normal cases. MCP cells presented transient expression in the bone marrow, which was distinctly different from multiple myeloma. Moreover, the SFTS patients with MCP cells had higher clinical severity. Further, the overproliferation of MCP cells was also observed in SFTS virus (SFTSV)-infected mice with lethal infectious doses. Together, SFTSV infection induces transient overproliferation of monoclonal lambda-type plasma cells, which have important implications for the study of SFTSV pathogenesis, prognosis, and the rational development of therapeutics.

Members of the gasdermin (GSDM) family are pore-forming effectors that cause membrane permeabilization and pyroptosis, a lytic proinflammatory type of cell death. To reveal the functional evolution of GSDM-mediated pyroptosis at the transition from invertebrates to vertebrates, we conducted functional characterization of amphioxus GSDME (BbGSDME) and found that it can be cleaved by distinct caspase homologs, yielding the N253 and N304 termini with distinct functions. The N253 fragment binds to cell membrane, triggers pyroptosis, and inhibits bacterial growth, while the N304 performs negative regulation of N253-mediated cell death. Moreover, BbGSDME is associated with bacteria-induced tissue necrosis and transcriptionally regulated by BbIRF1/8 in amphioxus. Interestingly, several amino acids that are evolutionarily conserved were found to be important for the function of both BbGSDME and HsGSDME, shedding new lights on the functional regulation of GSDM-mediated inflammation.

Curcumin’s ability to impact chronic inflammatory conditions, such as metabolic syndrome and arthritis, has been widely researched; however, its poor bioavailability limits its clinical application. The present study is focused on the development of curcumin-loaded polymeric nanomicelles as a drug delivery system with anti-inflammatory effects. Curcumin was loaded in PEG-60 hydrogenated castor oil and puronic F127 mixed nanomicelles (Cur-RH60/F127-MMs). Cur-RH60/F127-MMs was prepared using the thin film dispersion method. The morphology and releasing characteristics of nanomicelles were evaluated. The uptake and permeability of Cur-RH60/F127-MMs were investigated using RAW264.7 and Caco-2 cells, and their bioavailability and in vivo/vitro anti-inflammatory activity were also evaluated. The results showed that Cur-RH60/F127-MMs have regular sphericity, possess an average diameter smaller than 20 nm, and high encapsulation efficiency for curcumin (89.43%). Cur-RH60/F127-MMs significantly increased the cumulative release of curcumin in vitro and uptake by cells (p < 0.01). The oral bioavailability of Cur-RH60/F127-MMs was much higher than that of curcumin-active pharmaceutical ingredients (Cur-API) (about 9.24-fold). The treatment of cell lines with Cur-RH60/F127-MMs exerted a significantly stronger anti-inflammatory effect compared to Cur-API. In addition, Cur-RH60/F127-MMs significantly reduced OVA-induced airway hyperresponsiveness and inflammation in an in vivo experimental asthma model. In conclusion, this study reveals the possibility of formulating a new drug delivery system for curcumin, in particular nanosized micellar aqueous dispersion, which could be considered a perspective platform for the application of curcumin in inflammatory diseases of the airways.

Lichen natural products are a tremendous source of new bioactive chemical entities for drug discovery. The ability to survive in harsh conditions can be directly correlated with the production of some unique lichen metabolites. Despite the potential applications, these unique metabolites have been underutilized by pharmaceutical and agrochemical industries due to their slow growth, low biomass availability, and technical challenges involved in their artificial cultivation. At the same time, DNA sequence data have revealed that the number of encoded biosynthetic gene clusters in a lichen is much higher than in natural products, and the majority of them are silent or poorly expressed. To meet these challenges, the one strain many compounds (OSMAC) strategy, as a comprehensive and powerful tool, has been developed to stimulate the activation of silent or cryptic biosynthetic gene clusters and exploit interesting lichen compounds for industrial applications. Furthermore, the development of molecular network techniques, modern bioinformatics, and genetic tools is opening up a new opportunity for the mining, modification, and production of lichen metabolites, rather than merely using traditional separation and purification techniques to obtain small amounts of chemical compounds. Heterologous expressed lichen-derived biosynthetic gene clusters in a cultivatable host offer a promising means for a sustainable supply of specialized metabolites. In this review, we summarized the known lichen bioactive metabolites and highlighted the application of OSMAC, molecular network, and genome mining-based strategies in lichen-forming fungi for the discovery of new cryptic lichen compounds.

Nano titanium dioxide (nTiO2) generally shows low toxicity to organisms under light-emitting diode (LED) light. However, nTiO2 can induce production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) under ultraviolet (UV) light due to its photocatalytic activity. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect the enhancement of nTiO2 toxicity under sunlight. To test this hypothesis, we compared the toxicity of nTiO2 to Brachionus calyciflorus under simulated sunlight and LED light. The results showed that the 24 h-LC50 of nTiO2 to B. calyciflorus under LED light and simulated sunlight were 24.32 (95% CI: 14.54–46.81 mg/L) and 10.44 mg/L (95% CI: 6.74–17.09 mg/L), respectively. Compared with the blank control, treatments with nTiO2 significantly affected life-table demographic parameters, population growth parameters and swimming linear speed under both simulated sunlight and LED light. However, life expectancy, net reproductive rate, average lifespan, maximal population density, and swimming linear speed in the treatments of nTiO2 at 0.1, 1, and/or 10 mg/L showed markedly lower values under simulated sunlight than those under LED light, suggesting that simulated sunlight could enhance the toxicity of nTiO2. In addition, markedly higher catalase (CAT) activity and malondialdehyde (MDA) content but lower glutathione (GSH) content were observed in treatment with 10 mg/L nTiO2 under simulated sunlight than that under LED light. The results showed that compared with LED light, simulated sunlight significantly induced more oxidative stress in the presence of nTiO2, and the ROS production was mainly localized to the corona and digestive tract of rotifers by confocal laser scanning microscope. Exposure to 10–50 μM of vitamin C, that is an effective ROS scavenger, could rescue the swimming linear speed of rotifers to the normal level in the blank control. These results suggested that oxidative damages on cell membrane might be the vital mechanism underlying the toxicity enhancement of nTiO2 to rotifers under simulated sunlight. Thus, the previous publications under LED light may underestimate the real toxicity and environmental risk of nTiO2 in natural conditions.

The ejector drives unreacted hydrogen from the anode to improve fuel utilization ratio and discharges redundant water to prevent flooding and shutdown in the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). However, the traditional fixed structure ejector cannot meet the recycling requirements in the whole dynamic working condition of the fuel cell. In this article, a part nested four-nozzle (PNFN) ejector is proposed to enhance the hydrogen recycling efficiency under variable working conditions of the PEMFC by restricting the nozzle flow as 10%, 20%, 20%, and 50% of the fuel cell-rated power, respectively. Systematical analyses are performed on the experimentally verified 3D model to study inner flow characteristics and performance under different nozzle running modes. The results indicate that the PNFN ejector satisfies the recirculation ratio requirements in the power range of 34–220 kW within the 7–9 bar suitable supply pressure. By comparing with traditional ejectors, the PNFN ejector has a wider working range and especially outputs better performance in the low power range.

On this basis, BIM virtual scenes are introduced to create a universal scene specification dataset in the field of bridge construction and a dataset of unsafe potential hazard characteristics in the field of bridge construction. Nanobots are artificial intelligence systems built to simulate biological nanomachine constructions in life activities and important biological events in life processes. In this paper, BIM virtual scenarios incorporating intelligent nanomaterial robot mapping technology are migrated to bridge engineering safety management. According to the collected construction scene images and BIM (building information model) virtual scenes, build the construction scene dataset, use intelligent robots to obtain construction scenes, and load them into the trained construction on-the-spot neural network modeling to complete the bridge construction scene identification safety discrimination to select more comprehensive and more stringent management solutions as safety management personnel management methods on-the-spot.

Mining and smelting result in vanadium (V) being released into the environment. Biologically removing V(V) with washing water of rice (WWR) was investigated in this study. Over a 7-d trial, the V(V) removal efficiency increased with dosing washing water of rice dosage up to 56.6%. The results demonstrated that washing water of rice could be used as carbon and microbial sources for biologically reducing V(V). Using domesticated sludge as the inoculum could enhance V(V) detoxification performance, and 95.5% of V(V) was removed in the inoculated system for 5 d. Soluble V(V) was transformed into insoluble V(IV) (VO2), which could be further removed with precipitation. In addition to ABC transporters, a two-component system was also involved in V(V) reduction. The study confirmed that washing water of rice could be utilized for V(V) bio-detoxification.

Summary: Lichens are well known as pioneer organisms or stress-tolerant extremophiles, potentially playing a core role in the early formation of terrestrial ecosystems. Epiphytic macrolichens are known to contribute to the water- and nutrient cycles in forest ecosystem. But due to the scarcity of fossil record, the evolutionary history of epiphytic macrolichens is poorly documented. Based on new fossil of Jurassic Daohugouthallus ciliiferus, we demonstrate the hitherto oldest known macrolichen inhabited a gymnosperm branch. We applied energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and geometric morphometric analysis to complementarily verify lichen affinity of D. ciliiferus and quantitatively assess the potential relationships with extant lichenized lineages, providing new approaches for study of this lichen adpression fossil. Considering the results, and the inferred age of D. ciliiferus, a new family, Daohugouthallaceae, is established. This work updates current knowledge to the early evolution of epiphytic macrolichens and reveals more complex lichen-plant interactions in a Jurassic forest ecosystem.

Direct Oral Anticoagulants (DOACs) , which partially replace warfarin, have been developed as a safe and effective therapy for patients with stable coronary artery disease (SCAD) and atrial fibrillation (AF). However, the choice of DOACs and warfarin remains controversial. We conducted a network meta-analysis (NMA) using randomized controlled trials (RCTs) through a systematic literature review to evaluate the the efficacy and safety of DOACs in SCAD and AF patients. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common blindness-causing disease among the elderly. Under oxidative stress, low-density lipoprotein in the outer layer of the retina is easily converted into oxidized low-density lipoprotein (OxLDL), which promotes the development of choroidal neovascularization (CNV), the main pathological change in wet AMD. Liver X receptor (LXR), a ligand-activated nuclear transcription factor, regulates various processes related to CNV, including lipid metabolism, cholesterol transport, inflammation, and angiogenesis. In this study, we evaluated the effects of the LXR agonist TO901317 (TO) on CNV. Our results demonstrated that the TO could inhibit OxLDL-induced CNV in mice as well as inflammation and angiogenesis in vitro. Using siRNA transfection in cells and Vldlr−/− mice, we further confirmed the inhibitory effects of TO against the inflammatory response and oxidative stress. Mechanistically, the LXR agonist reduces the inflammatory response via the nuclear translocation of NF-κB p65 in the pathway for NF-κB activation and by enhancing ABCG1-dependent lipid transportation. Therefore, an LXR agonist is a promising therapeutic candidate for AMD, especially for wet AMD.

Aiming at the imbalance of seasonal agricultural machinery operations in different regions and the low efficiency of agricultural machinery, an experiment is proposed to use particle swarm algorithm to plan agricultural machinery paths to solve the current problems in agricultural machinery operations. Taking the harvesting of autumn soybeans at Jianshan Farm in Heilongjiang Reclamation Area as the experimental object, this paper constructs the optimization target model of the maximum net income of farm machinery households, and uses particle swarm algorithm to carry out agricultural machinery operation distribution and path planning gradually. In this paper, by introducing 0 - 1 mapping, the improved algorithm adopts continuous decision variables to solve the optimization of discrete variables in agricultural machinery operations. The test results show that the particle swarm algorithm can realize the optimal allocation of agricultural machinery path, and the particle swarm algorithm is scientific and explanatory to solve the agricultural machinery allocation problem. This research can provide a scientific basis for farm agricultural machinery allocation and decision analysis.

Phytoplankton biomass is generally measured as chlorophyll-a concentration (Chla), and is well known to be sensitive to nutrients and large zooplankton. However, whether nutrient was still be a better predictor of Chla when potential affecting variables were taken together, and whether the critical TN:TP (total nitrogen: total phosphorus, by mass) threshold for classifying nutrient limitation varied with lake type remain uncertain. Furthermore, it remains largely unknown to what extent small zooplankton (SZ) can affect the nutrients-Chla relationships. Here, an investigation on how Chla responded to abiotic factors and SZ dynamics was performed in 21 subtropical shallow lakes along the lower reach of Chinese Yangtze River. These lakes were subdivided into two lake types including urban lakes featured by a low water exchange rate, and suburban lakes with hydrological connectivity. Chla and TP:Chla ratio were generally higher and lower in urban lakes than those in suburban lakes, respectively. Various analyses revealed that TP and water temperature were the key factors regulating Chla in urban and suburban lakes, respectively. Across urban lakes, TP accounted for >50% of the Chla variances in spring, autumn, and winter, but only explained 28% of summer Chla. However, if the sampling sites where SZ density was >17.5 times higher than that in spring were removed, the determination coefficient (R2) in the linear regression analysis between TP and summer Chla increased (from 0.28 to 0.57), and the Akaike Information Criterion decreased. Furthermore, TP:Chla was positively correlated with SZ in urban lakes in spring when the highest density of SZ (HSZ): the lowest density of SZ (LSZ) ratio was 456 (>17.5), while that interrelationship was not found in summer with the HSZ:LSZ ratio of 17.5. Therefore, the weak TP-summer Chla relationship in urban lakes was primarily caused by SZ when their density exceeded a 17.5-fold increase, i.e. small zooplankton could adopt “quantity-driven” strategy for phytoplankton control. For further strengthening the eutrophication management and remediation in subtropical urban lakes, it is critical to recover aquatic vegetation that can not only absorb P directly but provide refuge for zooplankton instead of dredging the sediments completely. In addition, we recommended that TN:TP ratio exceeding 20.0 could be the threshold identifying P-limitation in urban lakes rather than suburban lakes, and transparency can be used as rough indicators for measuring TP and Chla concentrations (

Two nano-scaled hexagonal distortions in high temperature BCC phase during cooling is commonly observed in many alloys systems. Although efforts have been made on studying the lattice softening of the BCC structure during cooling, the distortion mechanisms are less addressed. Thus, the formation of two hexagonal structures in the β precipitates in a Cu-40Zn alloy treated by ECP was thoroughly investigated. Results show that the β precipitates contain two kinds of nano-sized and diffuse atomic clusters one with a η structure obeying the Burgers OR and the other a ω structure obeying the Blackburn OR. They were each formed through a two-stepped atomic displacement. For the η structure, the first step is the atomic shuffle of each second 110β plane in the β direction and the second is a structure change mainly by a {1 1¯ 2} β shear. For the ω structure, the first is an atomic shuffle on each second and third {112¯}β plane in the ± [111]β directions and then normal strains in three mutually perpendicular directions. The concomitant formation of the two structures minimizes the lattice distortion of single formation. The present results provide new information on the formation mechanism of the two hexagonal structures in a BCC matrix.

Background: With the aim of addressing the difficulty in identifying temperatures in virtual chemistry experiments, we propose a temperature-sensing simulation method of virtual chemistry experiments. Methods: We construct a virtual chemistry experiment temperature simulation platform, based on which a wearable temperature generation device is developed. The typical middle school virtual experiments of concentrated sulfuric acid dilution and ammonium nitrate dissolution are conducted to verify the actual effect of the device. Results: The platform is capable to indicate near real-world experimental situations. The performance of the device not only meets the temperature sensing characteristics of human skin, but also matches the temperature change of virtual chemistry experiments in real-time. Conclusions: It is demonstrated that this temperature-sensing simulation method can represent exothermic or endothermic chemistry experiments, which is beneficial for students to gain understanding of the principles of thermal energy transformation in chemical reactions, thus avoiding the danger that may be posed in the course of traditional teaching of chemistry experiments effectively. Although this methoddoes not have a convenient enough operation for users, the immersion of virtual chemical experiments can be enhanced.

Abstract Background The design of an external fixator with the optimal biomechanical function and the lowest profile has been highly pursued, as fracture healing is dependent on the stability and durability of fixation, and a low profile is more desired by patients. The plate-type external fixator, a novel prototype of an external tibial fixation device, is a low profile construct. However, its biomechanical properties remain unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate the stiffness and strength of the plate-type external fixator and the unilateral external fixator. We hypothesized that the plate-type external fixator could provide higher stiffness while retaining sufficient strength. Methods Fifty-four cadaver tibias underwent a standardized midshaft osteotomy to create a fracture gap model to simulate a comminuted diaphyseal fracture. All specimens were randomly divided into three groups of eighteen specimens each and stabilized with either a unilateral external fixator or two configurations of the plate-type external fixator. Six specimens of each configuration were tested to determine fixation stiffness in axial compression, four-point bending, and torsion, respectively. Afterwards, dynamic loading until failure was performed in each loading mode to determine the construct strength and failure mode. Results The plate-type external fixator provided higher stiffness and strength than the traditional unilateral external fixator. The highest biomechanics were observed for the classical plate-type external fixator, closely followed by the extended plate-type external fixator. Conclusions The plate-type external fixator is stiffer and stronger than the traditional unilateral external fixator under axial compression, four-point bending and torsion loading conditions.

As an important method for humans to perceive their environment, touch has not been fully integrated into virtual reality technology. Existing tactile feedback devices have the problem of being large and expensive, and most studies have not explored the ability of the affected area to distinguish an external stimulus, thus it is difficult to perform natural human-computer interactions. This article describes the development of a device that can transmit multimodal tactile information in accordance with the characteristics of human hand skin perception during a human-computer interaction. The device has 10 miniature vibrators (Φ = 10 mm, d=2.7 mm) and 2 semiconductor refrigerators (23 mm × 23 mm × 4 mm), which can achieve temperature and vibration feedback. First, the structure and working principle of the device were introduced, and the device's performance was analyzed. Subsequently, an experiment based on the perception characteristics of human hand skin was designed. The experiment determined the vibration level (1-5), heating level (I-IV), and cooling level (I-III) that are consistent with the perception characteristics of the hand skin. Finally, a chemical experiment was designed to test the performance of the device. The results of the experiment showed that 92% of the volunteers thought the device had a higher sense of authenticity and immersion than the traditional virtual reality experience.

Background: Though many literatures documented burnout and occupational hazard among healthcare workers and frontliners during pandemic, not many adopted a systemic approach to look at the resilience among this population. Another under-studied population was the large numbers of global healthcare workers who have been deployed to tackle the crisis of COVID-19 pandemic in the less resourceful regions. We investigated both the mental wellbeing risk and protective factors of a deployed healthcare workers (DHWs) team in Wuhan, the epicenter of the virus outbreak during 2020.Method: A consensual qualitative research approach was adopted with 25 DHWs from H province through semi-structured interviews after 3 months of deployment period.Results: Inductive-Deductive thematic coding with self-reflexivity revealed multi-layered risk and protective factors for DHWs at the COVID-19 frontline. Intensive working schedule and high-risk environment, compounded by unfamiliar work setting and colleagues; local culture adaptation; isolation from usual social circle, strained the DHWs. Meanwhile, reciprocal relationships and “familial relatedness” with patients and colleagues; organizational support to the DHWs and their immediate families back home, formed crucial wellbeing resources in sustaining the DHWs. The dynamic and dialectical relationships between risk and protective factors embedded in multiple layers of relational contexts could be mapped into a socio-ecological framework.Conclusion: Our multidisciplinary study highlights the unique social connectedness between patient-DHWs; within DHWs team; between deploying hospital and DHWs; and between DHWs and the local partners. We recommend five organizational strategies as mental health promotion and capacity building for DHWs to build a resilient network and prevent burnout at the disaster frontline.

Objective We aimed to describe the differences in clinicopathological characteristics and overall survival (OS) between male and female breast cancer patients, and to develop a prognostic nomogram to predict survival in patients with male breast cancer (MBC). Methods Using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database, we compared age, race, histological type, histological grade, tumor size, lymph node status, metastases, estrogen/progesterone receptor (ER/PR) and HER-2 status between male and female patients, and analyzed their relationships with OS. We established a nomogram and produced a calibration curve to observe its predictive effect. Results Age, race, T stage, N stage, bone and lung metastases, and histological type and grade differed between male and female patients. OS in male patients was related to age, tumor size, metastatic site, ER/PR status, and histological grade, but not to race or lymph node status. A nomogram was established, which showed good predictive performance for survival in MBC patients (area under the curve = 0.7). Conclusion MBC has a worse prognosis than female breast cancer, mainly characterized by late onset age, late staging, high proportion of invasive non-specific histological types, high histological grade, and luminal breast cancer.

In this study, two new species, Peltula confusa Q.X. Yang & X.L. Wei, sp. nov., growing in a dry microenvironment within a semi-humid area, and Peltula subpatellata Q.X. Yang & X.L. Wei, sp. nov., occurring in arid and semi-arid regions, are described. In addition, two species, P. polyspora (Tuck.) Wetmore and P. obscuratula (Nyl.) Poelt ex Egea, are recorded for the first time in China. All four species are described based on morphological, anatomical and molecular data. Peltula confusa is characterized by a lighter, brighter, and more yellowish upper surface than other species of this genus, with discs concentrated in the central part of squamules, and a thick lower cortex. Peltula subpatellata can be distinguished from P. patellata (Bagl.) Swinscow & Krog by its non-thickened and sometimes darkened margins and sometimes the presence of peltate squamules. Phylogenetic analysis based on DNA sequences of four loci (ITS, nrSSU, nrLSU, and RPB2) demonstrates the placement of these species within Peltula, and supports current species delimitations. We suggest that the growth substrate should be considered as an additional characteristic for species delimitation.

The genus Omphalina is an ideal genus for studying the evolutionary mechanism of lichenization. Based on molecular phylogeny using ITS and nuLSU sequences by means of Bayesian and maximum likelihood analyses and morphological examination, combining the existence of green algae in basidiomata stipe and a Botrydina-type vegetative thallus, we described a bryophilous new basidiolichen species, Omphalina licheniformis, from a residential area of Jiangxi Province, China. This finding of unusual new basidiolichen species updated our understanding of the delimitation of Omphalina, indicating that both non-lichen-forming and lichen-forming fungal species are included simultaneously. The presence of algal cells in the basidiomata should receive more attention, as this would be helpful to distinguish more potential basidiolichens and explore the cryptic species diversity. This work provides new insights and evidence for understanding the significance of lichenization during the evolution of Agaricomycetes.

To improve the detection sensitivity of a porous silicon optical biosensor in the real-time detection of biomolecules, a non-spectral porous silicon optical biosensor technology, based on dual-signal light detection, is proposed. Double-light detection is a combination of refractive index change detection and fluorescence change detection. It uses quantum dots to label probe molecules to detect target molecules. In the double-signal-light detection method, the first detection-signal light is the detection light that is reflected from the surface of the porous silicon Bragg mirror. The wavelength of the detection light is the same as the wavelength of the photonic band gap edge of the porous silicon Bragg mirror. CdSe/ZnS quantum dots are used to label the probe DNA and hybridize it with the target DNA molecules in the pores of porous silicon to improve its effective refractive index and enhance the detection-reflection light. The second detection-signal light is fluorescence, which is generated by the quantum dots in the reactant that are excited by light of a certain wavelength. The Bragg mirror structure further enhances the fluorescence signal. A digital microscope is used to simultaneously receive the digital image of two kinds of signal light superimposed on the surface of porous silicon, and the corresponding algorithm is used to calculate the change in the average grey value before and after the hybridization reaction to calculate the concentration of the DNA molecules. The detection limit of the DNA molecules was 0.42 pM. This method can not only detect target DNA by hybridization, but also detect antigen by immune reaction or parallel biochip detection for a porous silicon biosensor.

Body axial patterning develops via a rostral-to-caudal sequence and relies on the temporal colinear activation of Hox genes. However, the underlying mechanism of Hox gene temporal colinear activation remains largely elusive. Here, with small-molecule inhibitors and conditional gene knockout mice, we identified Jmjd3, a subunit of TrxG, as an essential regulator of temporal colinear activation of Hox genes with its H3K27me3 demethylase activity. We demonstrated that Jmjd3 not only initiates but also maintains the temporal collinear expression of Hox genes. However, we detected no antagonistic roles between Jmjd3 and Ezh2, a core subunit of PcG repressive complex 2, during the processes of axial skeletal patterning. Our findings provide new insights into the regulation of Hox gene temporal collinear activation for body axial patterning in mice.

Myhre syndrome is a rare disorder caused by a heterozygous mutation in the SMAD4 gene. Affected patients may exhibit dysmorphic facial features, intrauterine growth retardation, short stature, obesity, muscle hypertrophy, thickened skin, limited joint movement, hearing impairment, and varying degrees of psychomotor developmental disorder. Serious complications of the cardiovascular and respiratory system may be seen later in life. We report the case of a Chinese boy with Myhre syndrome presenting with a novel symptom of giant testicles where treatment with growth hormone combined with letrozole successfully improved his short stature. This case shows that letrozole combined with growth hormone can improve height in children with Myhre syndrome without adverse effects.

Verrucariaceae is the third-largest lichen family with high species diversity. However, this diversity has not been well-explored in China. We carried out a wide-scale field investigation in the arid and semi-arid regions of Northwest China from 2017 to 2021. A large number of lichen groups, especially those commonly distributed in deserts, were collected. Based on molecular phylogeny using ITS and nuLSU sequences by Bayesian and maximum likelihood analyses, combining morphological characters, seven taxa of catapyrenioid lichens in Verricariaceae were found in this study, including one genus (Clavascidium) and one species (Clavascidium lacinulatum) new to China; one genus (Placidium) new to the mainland of China; and four species (Clavascidium sinense, Placidium nitidulum, Placidium nigrum, and Placidium varium) new to science. It enriched our understanding of the high species diversity in Verrucariaceae and the lichen flora of Chinese arid and semi-arid deserts.

Background: In neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSDs), inflammation is not the sole driver of accumulation of disability; neurodegeneration is another important pathological process. We aim to explore different patterns of cortical atrophy and ventricular enlargement in NMOSD.Methods: We retrospectively analyzed a cohort of 230 subjects, comprising 55 healthy controls (HCs), 85 multiple sclerosis (MS), and 90 NMOSD patients from Tianjin Medical University General Hospital and Beijing Tiantan Hospital. Different compartments of the brain (total gray, cortex, subcortex gray, and ventricle volume) were evaluated with the FreeSurfer. Multiple linear regressions were adopted to explore associations between cortex volume and predict factors.Results: Compared with HCs, NMOSD, and MS displayed an enlarged lateral and third ventricle (p < 0.001), whereas expansion of the fourth ventricle was observed in MS rather than NMOSD (p = 0.321). MS and NMOSD patients exhibited cortical thinning in comparison with HCs. However, pronounced cortical atrophy were only significant in pre-cuneus, parahippocampal, and lateral occipital lobe between MS and NMOSD. Patients with NMOSD had decreased local gyrification index in orbitofrontal and pre-cuneus lobe, and reduced pial surface area. Linear regression analysis revealed cortex volume were predicated by advanced age (standardized β = −0.404, p = 0.001) as well as prolonged disease history (standardized β = −0.311, p = 0.006).Conclusion: NMOSD exhibited global cortex atrophy with enlarged lateral and third ventricles. Moreover, cortex volume is associated with age and disease duration.

Animals mimicking other organisms or using camouflage to deceive predators are vital survival strategies. Modern and fossil insects can simulate diverse objects. Lichens are an ancient symbiosis between a fungus and an alga or a cyanobacterium that sometimes have a plant-like appearance and occasionally are mimicked by modern animals. Nevertheless, lichen models are almost absent in fossil record of mimicry. Here, we provide the earliest fossil evidence of a mimetic relationship between the moth lacewing mimic Lichenipolystoechotes gen. nov. and its co-occurring fossil lichen model Daohugouthallus ciliiferus. We corroborate the lichen affinity of D. ciliiferus and document this mimetic relationship by providing structural similarities and detailed measurements of the mimic’s wing and correspondingly the model’s thallus. Our discovery of lichen mimesis predates modern lichen-insect associations by 165 million years, indicating that during the mid-Mesozoic, the lichen-insect mimesis system was well established and provided lacewings with highly honed survival strategies.

The genus Peltula is an important cyanobacterial lichen group. We performed a taxonomic study on the Peltula from China using phylogenetic analysis based on three gene loci (ITS, nuSSU, nuLSU) together with additional species delimitation analyses by ABGD, bPTP and GMYC approaches and the phenotypic characteristics. Five new species (Peltula lobulata, P. polycarpa, P. polyphylla, P. pseudoboletiformis and P. submarginata) were found and described. Peltula lobulata is diagnostic in its small thallus with plenty of lobules, rolled down and irregularly lobed margins, and uneven cracked surfaces. Peltula polycarpa has convex and rolled down lobes and numerous apothecia with a thalloid rim covering the whole lobe, and it can be distinguished from fertile P. farinosa (southern Switzerland) by a bright olive-green and epruinose surface, and the absence of isidia. Peltula polyphylla is differentiated from any other known Peltula species by a very small polyphyllous thallus composed of abundant olive-brown to olive-black small lobes growing tightly and sometimes anastomosing and attaching to the substrate by a large and strong umbilical cluster. Peltula submarginata is similar to P. marginata but differs in the presence of encircled epinecral and algae layers, and the absence of a lower cortex. Peltula pseudoboletiformis is different from the similar species P. boletiformis in greener lobes, more yellow–green umbilici and certain phylogenetic differences. Moreover, a key to the species of Peltula in China is also provided here.

In this work, we synthesized a pair of positional isomers by attaching a small electron-donating pyrrolidinyl group at ortho- and para-positions of a conjugated core. These isomers exhibited totally different fluorescent properties. PDB2 exhibited obvious aggregation-induced emission properties. In contrast, PDB4 showed the traditional aggregation-caused quenching effect. Their different fluorescent properties were investigated by absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, density functional theory calculations and single-crystal structural analysis. These results indicated that the substituent position of the pyrrolidinyl groups affects the twisted degree of the isomers, which further induces different molecular packing modes, thus resulting in different fluorescent properties of these two isomers. This molecular design concept provided a new accurate strategy for designing new aggregation-induced emission luminogens.

Abstract Little research has focused on how rotifer communities respond to eutrophication based on their combined taxonomic and functional indices. In this research, the relationship of the environment and rotifer communities was comparatively investigated in two subtropical lakes over one year. The taxon-based indices, including species number (S), Margalef index (D), Simpson index (d), Shannon-wiener index (H′), and functional traits relying on the guild ratio (GR) and the modified guild ratio (GR′) from the moderately eutrophic Lake Xiyanghu were significantly lower than those from the slightly eutrophic Lake Jinghu. Unlabelled: This study aimed to determine whether the Trp64Arg mutation in the beta3-adrenergic receptor beta3-adr) gene is related to childhood obesity and the response to dietary intervention for obesity. The study included 311 healthy children aged 8-11 y selected at random from 4 primary schools in Beijing. Fasting insulin and lipids were measured and anthropometry was carried out for all samples. The mutation of the beta3-adr gene was determined by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. Forty-seven obese children were selected and divided into two groups. One group received dietary intervention (36 subjects); the other served as the control group (11 subjects). After 3 mo of dietary intervention, anthropometry was carried out again in 47 obese children. The frequency of the mutated allele was similar in 73 overweight and 238 normal-weight children (0.18 and 0.17, respectively). Adjusted for age and sex. there was no significant difference in body mass index (BMI) and the levels of fasting lipids and insulin between those with and without the mutation of the 311 children. However, after 3 mo of dietary intervention. increases in weight and BMI were significantly lower in obese children without the mutation than in the control group (2.41 +/- 0.56 vs 4.43 +/- 0.70. p < 0.05: 0.48 +/- 0.24 vs 1.55 +/- 0.35, p < 0.05. respectively), but the changes in weight and BMI in obese children with the mutation were similar to the results in the controls (4.32 +/- 0.69 vs 4.43 +/- 0.70; 1.47 +/- 0.32 vs 1.55 +/- 0.35).Conclusion: The Trp64Arg mutation of the beta3-adr gene may predict the result of dietary intervention in obese children to some extent, but it was not a major factor affecting weight in Chinese children.
