Abstract Introduction Matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) are critical components of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in colorectal cancer (CRC). We aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in patients with CRC. Methods We performed a meta-analysis of cohort studies with available data on the effect of MMP-2 and MMP-9 expression on both disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) by the risk ratios (RRs) with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Studies were subgrouped based on the different tissue types, including cancer tissue and normal tissue, and the subgroup effect of MMP expression in different tissues was analyzed through meta-regression. To ensure the quality and reduce the risk of bias, the Newcastle‒Ottawa Scale (NOS) was used to assess the included studies. A sensitivity analysis was randomly performed to assess the potential impact of each study on our results. Results Eighteen trials were selected (Table 1) and included a total of 3944 patients. Xylanase plays a key role in degrading plant cell wall during pathogenic fungi infection. Here, we identified a xylanase gene, VmXyl2 from the transcriptome of Valsa mali and examined its function. VmXyl2 has highly elevated transcript levels during the infection process of V. mali, with 15.02-fold increase. Deletion mutants of the gene were generated to investigate the necessity of VmXyl2 in the development and pathogenicity of V. mali. The VmXyl2 deletion mutant considerably reduced the virulence of V. mali in apple leaves and in twigs, accompanied by 41.22% decrease in xylanase activity. In addition, we found that VmXyl2 induces plant cell necrosis regardless of its xylanase activity, whereas promoting the infection of V. mali in apple tissues. The cell death-inducing activity of VmXyl2 dependent on BRI1-associated kinase-1 (BAK1) but not Suppressor of BIR1-1 (SOBIR1). Furthermore, VmXyl2 interacts with Mp2 in vivo, a receptor-like kinase with leucine-rich repeat. The results offer valuable insights into the roles of VmXyl2 in the pathogenicity of V. mali during its infection of apple trees.

The incidence of cardiovascular disease is increasing around the world, and it is one of the main causes of death in chronic kidney diseases patients. It is urgent to early identify the factors of cardiometabolic risk. Sleep problems have been recognized as a risk factor for cardiometabolic risk in both healthy people and chronic patients. However, the relationship between sleep problems and cardiometabolic risk has not been clearly explored in hemodialysis patients. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between sleep problems and cardiometabolic risk in 3025 hemodialysis patients by a multicenter study. After adjusting for confounders, binary logistic regression models showed that hemodialysis patients reported sleep duration greater than 7 h were more likely to be with hypertension, hyperglycemia, hypertriglyceridemia, and hypercholesterolemia. Patients reported sleep duration less than 7 h were more likely to be with hypertriglyceridemia and hypercholesterolemia, but the risks of hyperglycemia and Low HDL-cholesterol were decreased. Poor sleep quality was negatively correlated to low HDL cholesterol and hypertriglyceridemia. Moreover, gender-based differences were explained.

Abstract Recycling cathode materials from spent lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) is critical to a sustainable society as it will relief valuable but scarce recourse crises and reduce environment burdens simultaneously. Different from conventional hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical recycling methods, direct regeneration relies on non‐destructive cathode‐to‐cathode mode, and therefore, more time and energy‐saving along with an increased economic return and reduced CO2 footprint. This review retrospects the history of direct regeneration and discusses state‐of‐the‐art development. The reported methods, including high‐temperature solid‐state, hydrothermal/ionothermal, molten salt thermochemistry, and electrochemical method, are comparatively introduced, targeting at illustrating their underlying regeneration mechanism and applicability. Further, representative repairing and upcycling studies on wide‐applied cathodes, including LiCoO2 (LCO), ternary oxides, LiFePO4 (LFP), and LiMn2O4 (LMO), are presented, with an emphasis on milestone cases. Despite these achievements, there remain several critical issues that shall be addressed before the commercialization of the mentioned direct regeneration methods.

ABSTRACTGestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is an increasing public health concern that significantly increases the risk of early childhood allergic diseases. Altered maternal milk glycobiome may strongly affect gut microbiota and enteric-specific Treg cell-mediated development of immune tolerance in GDM infants. In this study, we found that, compared with healthy Chinese mothers, mothers with GDM had significantly lower levels of total and specific human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) in their colostrum that subsequently increased with extension of lactation. This alteration in HMO profiles significantly delayed colonization of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium spp. in their breast-fed infants, resulting in a distinct gut microbial structure and metabolome. Further experiments in GDM mouse models indicated that decreased contents of milk oligosaccharides, mainly 3ʹ-sialyllactose (3ʹ-SL), in GDM maternal mice reduced colonization of bacteria, such as L. reuteri and L. johnsonii, in the neonatal gut, which impeded development of RORγt+ regulatory T (Treg) cell-mediated immune tolerance. Treatment of GDM neonates with 3ʹ-SL, Lactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri) and L. johnsonii promoted the proliferation of enteric Treg cells and expression of transcription factor RORγt, which may have contributed to compromising ovalbumin (OVA)-induced allergic responses. In vitro experiments showed that 3ʹ-SL, metabolites of L. johnsonii, and lysates of L. reuteri stimulated differentiation of mouse RORγt+ Treg cells through multiple regulatory effects on Toll-like receptor, MAPK, p53, and NOD-like receptor signaling pathways. This study provides new ideas for the development of gut microbiota and immune tolerance in GDM newborns.

Objective Aging is a complex process of physiological dysregulation of the body system and is common in hemodialysis patients. However, limited studies have investigated the links between dialysis vintage, calcium, phosphorus, and iPTH control and aging. The purpose of the current study was to examine these associations.Methods During 2020, a cross-sectional study was conducted in 3025 hemodialysis patients from 27 centers in Anhui Province, China. Biological age was calculated by a formula using chronological age and clinical indicators. The absence of the target range for serum phosphorus (0.87–1.45 mmol/L), corrected calcium (2.1–2.5 mmol/L) and iPTH (130–585 pg/mL) were identified as abnormal calcium, phosphorus, and iPTH control.Results A total of 1131 hemodialysis patients were included, 59.2% of whom were males (669/1131). The mean (standard deviation) of actual age and biological age were 56.07 (12.79) years and 66.94 (25.88), respectively. The median of dialysis vintage was 4.3 years. After adjusting for the confounders, linear regression models showed patients with abnormal calcium, phosphorus, and iPTH control and on hemodialysis for less than 4.3 years (B = 0.211, p = .002) or on hemodialysis for 4.3 years or more (B = 0.302, p

Crabapples (Malus sp.) are ornamental woody plants that belong to the Rosaceae family. Flooding has severely hampered the growth and development of crabapple, and little is known about the molecular responses of crabapple to waterlogging tolerance. Cuttings of waterlogging-tolerant Malus hupehensis and waterlogging-intolerant Malus halliana received flooding treatment of 30 days and regular planting, respectively. Using transcriptome sequencing, we isolated 5703 and 2735 waterlogging-responsive genes from waterlogging-treated M. hupehensis and M. halliana leaves. Among these differentially expressed genes (DEGs), only 746 were shared by both. Several variables may explain the greater waterlogging tolerance of M. hupehensis: there were more waterlogging response genes related to carbohydrate and energy metabolism; signal transduction; antioxidation; lipid metabolism; protein and amino acid metabolism; and polysaccharide, cell wall, and cytoskeleton metabolism pathway in the waterlogged leaves of M. hupehensis than in M. halliana. In particular, the number of DEGs related to anaerobic metabolism, fatty acid metabolism, protein phosphorylation and dephosphorylation, γ-aminobutyric acid metabolism and cellulase, pectinase metabolism pathway in the flooded leaves of M. hupehensis was more than that in M. halliana. The alterations in gene expression patterns of the two crabapple species induced by waterlogging varied substantially. These outcomes pave the way for further studies into the functions of genes that may be involved in waterlogging tolerance in crabapples.

Lignin, the most abundant source of renewable aromatic compounds on the planet, is attracting more scholarly attention due to its possibility of replacing petroleum-based chemicals and products. However, it remains underutilized because of the heterogeneity of its multi-level structure that prevents homogenization and standardization of derived products. The key to solving these problems lies in finding a general preparation method to achieve the integrated utilization of lignin molecules at all levels. The assembly-mediated granulation methods provide a significant means for the integrated value-added utilization of lignin, and for biomass productization applications, it is significant to understand the molecular mechanisms of lignin nano-colloids (LNCs) formation thus accurately guiding their functionalization. Therefore, a thorough understanding of the assembly morphology and behavior of lignin in different solutions towards colloids is of great scientific importance. In this minireview, we focus on the assembly behavior of lignin in different solvents, specifically in mono-solvent and multi-solvent, and in particular, we review various methods for preparing lignin composite colloids and concentrate on the applications in therapy, cosmetics and emulsification, which are important for guiding the preparation and efficient utilization of LNCs.

Objective: Serum magnesium (Mg2+) levels are associated with insulin resistance, hypertension, lipid abnormalities, and inflammation. However, limited studies have indicated the relationship between Mg2+ and multiple system indexes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between Mg2+ and allostatic load (AL) in hemodialysis patients.Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted on hemodialysis patients from different centers in Anhui Province, China, between January and December 2020. A total of 3,025 hemodialysis patients were recruited. Their clinical data were measured before hemodialysis. Information was collected by an online self-reported questionnaire and medical record. Serum Mg2+ was divided into three groups by tertiles. A score of AL greater than or equal to 3 was defined as high AL. A binary logistic regression model was applied to examine the relationship between serum Mg2+ and AL.Results: A total of 1,222 patients undergoing hemodialysis were included, 60% of whom were males (733/1,222). The mean (standard deviation) age of patients was 55.90 (12.75). The median level of serum Mg2+ was 1.22 mmol/L. The rate of high AL levels was 23.4%. Serum Mg2+ was negatively correlated with body mass index, fasting blood glucose (Glu), and C-reactive protein and positively correlated with high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, total cholesterol, diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and serum phosphorus. After adjusting for gender, anxiety, diabetes, family residence, lipid-lowering agents, antihypertensive medications, albumin, and Glu, the binary logistic regression model showed that patients with lower levels of serum Mg2+ were more likely have high AL (OR for the T1 group of serum Mg2+:1.945, 95% CI: 1.365–2.773, and OR for the T2 group of serum Mg2+:1.556, 95% CI: 1.099–2.201).Conclusion: Our data support the hypothesis that higher serum Mg2+ concentrations may contribute to lower health risk in hemodialysis populations. Further randomized controlled trials and cohort studies are warranted to verify whether Mg2+ supplementation could be part of routine examinations in hemodialysis populations.

Although the importance of coral holobionts is widely accepted, the relationship between the flexibility of the microbial structure and the coral host is very complicated. Particularly, the community dynamics of holobionts and the stability of host–microbe interactions under different thermal stresses remain largely unknown. In the present study, we holistically explored the physiology and growth of Acropora hyacinthus in response to increased temperatures (from 26 to 33°C). We observed that bleaching corals with loss of algal symbionts reduced lipids and proteins to maintain their survival, leading to decreased tissue biomass and retarded growth. The diversity of Symbiodiniaceae and symbiont shuffling in the community structure was mainly caused by alterations in the relative abundance of the thermally sensitive but dominant clade C symbionts and low abundance of “background types.” Bacterial diversity showed a decreasing trend with increasing temperature, whereas no significant shifts were observed in the bacterial community structure. This finding might be attributed to the local adjustment of specific microbial community members that did not affect the overall metabolic state of the coral holobiont, and there was no increase in the proportion of sequences identified as typically pathogenic or opportunistic taxa. The Sloan neutral community model showed that neutral processes could explain 42.37–58.43% of bacterial community variation. The Stegen null model analysis indicates that the stochastic processes explain a significantly higher proportion of community assembly than deterministic processes when the temperature was elevated. The weak effect of temperature on the bacterial community structure and assembly might be related to an increase in stochastic dominance. The interaction of bacterial communities exhibits a fluctuating and simplistic trend with increasing temperature. Moreover, temperature increases were sufficient to establish the high stability of bacterial networks, and a non-linear response was found between the complexity and stability of the networks. Our findings collectively provide new insights into successive changes in the scleractinian coral host and holobionts in response to elevated seawater temperatures, especially the contribution of the community assembly process and species coexistence patterns to the maintenance of the coral-associated bacterial community.

Background Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune disease, in addition, gut microbiota plays an important role in the etiology of RA. However, our understanding of alterations to the gut fungal microbiota in Chinese population with RA is still limited. Methods Serum samples were obtained from 62 patients with RA, and 39 age- and gender-matched healthy controls (HCs). Fecal samples were obtained from 42 RA patients and 39 HCs. Fecal fungal microbiota targeting internal transcribed spacer region 2 (ITS2) rRNA genes was investigated using MiSeq sequencing, as well as their associations with some diagnostic biomarkers for RA. Results Our results showed that the fungal diversity did not alter in RA patients but taxonomic composition of the fecal fungal microbiota did. The gut mycobiota of RA patients was characterized by decreased abundance of Pholiota, Scedosporium, and Trichosporon. The linear discriminant analysis (LDA) effect size analysis (LEfSe) analysis identified several RA-enriched fungal genera, which were positively correlated with most RA biomarkers. Furthermore, since RA is an age- and gende-related disease, we classified RA patients into subgroups with age and gender and analyzed the sequencing results. Our data demonstrated that Wallemia and Irpex were the most discriminatory against RA patients over 60 years old, while Pseudeurotiaceae was the most discriminatory against female RA patients. Conclusions The case-control study presented here confirmed the alterations of gut fungal microbiota in Chinese patients with RA, and we speculated that the fungal dysbiosis may contribute to RA development.

Abstract Background Neoadjuvant radiotherapy (RT) has been shown to improve local control; however, whether it can improve overall survival (OS) in locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) patients remains controversial. We therefore aimed to examine the benefits of surgery alone, neoadjuvant radiotherapy (RT), adjuvant RT, and surgery plus chemotherapy in stage II (T3/4N0M0) and III (any T and N + M0) on the OS of rectal cancer patients. Methods Date from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database diagnosed between 2004 and 2016 were used. Kaplan-Meier analyses were used to compare patient prognoses across different treatment modalities. Cox hazard regression analysis were used to identify independent predictors of OS. Results For stage T3/4N0M0 patients, neoadjuvant RT, adjuvant RT, and surgery plus chemotherapy resulted in similar OS (all p > 0.05; mean survival, 115.89 months (M), 111.97 M, and 117.22 M, respectively), with better OS observed in these patients than in patients who underwent surgery alone (all p 0.05; mean survival, 121.50 M, 124.25 M, and 121.20 M, respectively), with better OS observed in these patients than in patients who underwent surgery alone (all p 60 years), black race, unmarried status, high tumour grade, and tumour size > 5 cm were all associated with a poor prognosis (all p

The machine vision system was employed to inspect the surface defects of bridge cables of cable-stayed bridges. After the acquisition and preprocessing of the defect images, it is necessary to classify and identify the defects of the cables to meet the requirements of non-destructive testing and evaluation. In this paper, feature extraction for defect images was performed using mathematical statistical methods. After that, 10 feature parameters including shape features, grayscale features and texture features of the defect images were obtained and selected for a classification model of support vector machine (SVM). To improve the SVM classification performance, the particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO) was adopted to obtain the punish factor c and the kernel parameter g of the SVM model, namely the PSO-SVM algorithm. Finally, our PSO-SVM classification model was employed to implement the classification of real surface defect images of the bridge cables. Longitudinal crack, transverse crack, surface corrosion, and pothole defect can be automatically identified and the classification accuracy reached 96.25%. The experimental results showed that the PSO-SVM model can improve the classification performance of the surface defects. Based on the effective classification, we can find the distribution characteristics of the surface defects of the cable. It is very important to analyze the relationship between the type of surface defects and the material of the protective layer, so as to adopt appropriate materials and reasonable maintenance measures. Thus, it has a great significance in the structural health monitoring of bridge cables.

In this study, a three-dimensional transient simulation model of a liquid cooling thermal management system with flow distributors and spiral channel cooling plates for pouch lithium-ion batteries has been developed. The cooling plates play the role of uniforming temperature distribution and reducing the maximum temperature within each battery, while the flow distributors have the function of reducing the temperature difference between batteries in the battery module. The accuracy of the thermophysical properties and heat generation rate of the battery was verified experimentally. The optimal structure and cooling strategy of the system was determined by single factor analysis as well as orthogonal test and matrix analysis methods. The optimal solution resulted in a maximum battery module temperature of 34.65 °C, a maximum temperature difference of 3.95 °C, and a channel pressure drop of 8.82 Pa. Using the world-harmonized light-duty vehicles test cycle (WLTC) conditions for a battery pack in an electric car, the performance of the optimal battery thermal management system (BTMS) design was tested, and the results indicate that the maximum temperature can be controlled below 25.51 °C and the maximum temperature difference below 0.21 °C, which well meet the requirements of BTMS designs.

Fluorescence, and more in general, photoluminescence (PL), presents important advantages for imaging with respect to other diagnostic techniques. In particular, detection methodologies exploiting fluorescence imaging are fast and versatile; make use of low-cost and simple instrumentations; and are taking advantage of newly developed powerful, low-cost, light-based electronic devices, such as light sources and cameras, used in huge market applications, such as civil illumination, computers, and cellular phones. Besides the aforementioned simplicity, fluorescence imaging offers a spatial and temporal resolution that can hardly be achieved with alternative methods. However, the two main limitations of fluorescence imaging for bio-application are still (i) the biological tissue transparency and autofluorescence and (ii) the biocompatibility of the contrast agents. Luminescent gold nanoclusters (AuNCs), if properly designed, combine high biocompatibility with PL in the near-infrared region (NIR), where the biological tissues exhibit higher transparency and negligible autofluorescence. However, the stabilization of these AuNCs requires the use of specific ligands that also affect their PL properties. The nature of the ligand plays a fundamental role in the development and sequential application of PL AuNCs as probes for bioimaging. Considering the importance of this, in this review, the most relevant and recent papers on AuNCs-based bioimaging are presented and discussed highlighting the different functionalities achieved by increasing the complexity of the ligand structure.

Coherent quantum transduction between microwave and optical signals is of great importance for long-distance quantum communication. Here we propose a novel scheme for the implementation of nonreciprocal single-photon state conversion between microwave and optical modes based on a hybrid magnonic system. A yttrium–iron–garnet (YIG) sphere with both the optomechanical and the optomagnetic properties is exploited to couple with a three-dimensional superconducting microwave resonator. The magnetostatic mode of the YIG sphere is treated as an intermediate to interact with the microwave and optical modes simultaneously. By manipulating the amplitudes and phase differences between the couplings via external driving fields, we show that the nonreciprocal microwave-light single-photon state conversion can be realized via the quantum interference effect.

Broussonetia papyrifera is rich in flavonoids, which have significant antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory activities and certain pharmacological activities. Nevertheless, scarce transcriptome resources of B. papyrifera have impeded further study regarding the process of its production and accumulation. In this study, RNA-seq was utilized to evaluate the gene expression of B. papyrifera leaves at three distinct developmental phases (T1: young leaves, T3: immature leaves, T4: matured leaves). We obtained 2447 upregulated and 2960 downregulated DEGs, 4657 upregulated and 4804 downregulated DEGs, and 805 upregulated and 484 downregulated DEGs from T1 vs. T3, T1 vs. T4, and T3 vs. T4, respectively. Further research found that the following variables contributed to the formation of flavonoids in the leaves of B. papyrifera: Several important enzyme genes involved in flavonoid production pathways have been discovered. The results demonstrated that the dynamic changing trend of flavonoid contents is related to the expression pattern of the vast majority of essential genes in the biosynthetic pathway. Genes associated in energy and glucose metabolism, polysaccharide, cell wall and cytoskeleton metabolism, signal transduction, and protein and amino acid metabolism may affect the growth and development of B. papyrifera leaves, and eventually their flavonoid content. This study’s results offer a strong platform for future research into the metabolic pathways of B. papyrifera.

Breast milk is rich in sialic acids (SA), which are commonly combined with milk oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates. As a functional nutrient component, SA-containing milk components have received increasing attention in recent years. Sialylated human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) have been demonstrated to promote the growth and metabolism of beneficial gut microbiota in infants, bringing positive outcomes to intestinal health and immune function. They also exhibit antiviral and bacteriostatic activities in the intestinal mucosa of new-borns, thereby inhibiting the adhesion of pathogens to host cells. These properties play a pivotal role in regulating the intestinal microbial ecosystem and preventing the occurrence of neonatal inflammatory diseases. In addition, some recent studies also support the promoting effects of sialylated HMOs on neonatal bone and brain development. In addition to HMOs, sialylated glycoproteins and glycolipids are abundant in milk, and are also critical to neonatal health. This article reviews the current research progress in the regulation of sialylated milk oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates on neonatal gut microbiota and health.

Human activities beyond ecosystem capacity have resulted in serious effects on corals worldwide. Nowadays, many studies have focused on the influence of diving activities on coral communities, while the knowledge of physiological changes under corresponding environmental stresses remains largely undetermined. In the study, we aimed to investigate the physiological effects of touching, ammonia nitrogen enrichment (5 μmol⋅L–1), and sediment cover (particle size of less than 0.3 mm), which simulated improper self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA) diving behaviors, on Acropora hyacinthus and Porites cylindrica in Wuzhizhou Island, the South China Sea. For A. hyacinthus, continuous touching caused the tentacles to shrink and secrete mucus, which consumed energy and dissolved oxygen. The skeletal growth rate was decreased by 72% compared with the control group. There was a rapid decline of Fv/Fm and alpha under the dual impacts of high ammonia nitrogen and touching, while the Chl a concentration and tissue biomass were decreased by 36 and 28% compared with touching alone, respectively. High ammonia nitrogen and touching increased the concentrations of lipid and protein. Nevertheless, zooxanthellae density was increased by 23% to relieve the effects of a lower concentration of Chl a in a high nutrient environment. Constant touching and sediment cover in diving areas with elevated ammonia content affected the photosynthesis and respiration of corals, and a significant decrease was observed for lipid, zooxanthellae density, and Chl a concentration. Coral bleaching occurred on day 7. For P. cylindrica, the decreasing magnitude of Fv/Fm and alpha under different stresses in the subsequent phase was less compared with A. hyacinthus. The contents of carbohydrate and protein under continuous touching were decreased by 7 and 15% compared with the control group, respectively, causing negative growth. Under the dual influences of high ammonia nitrogen and continuous touching, all energy reserves were significantly lower. Repeated touching and sediment cover in diving areas containing high ammonia content increased the concentrations of lipid and protein compared with the touching and high nutrient treatment group likely because that Porites associated with C15 zooxanthella increased heterotrophic feeding to compensate for restricted symbiodiniaceae photosynthesis. Additionally, P. cylindrica produced mucus to aid the removal of sediment, so that corals didn’t obviously bleach during the experiment. Collectively, P. cylindrica was more resistant to diving activities than A. hyacinthus which only relies on photoautotrophy. To ensure the sustainable development of coral reef dive tourism, it is necessary to strengthen the supervision of diving behaviors, rotate the diving areas, and conduct regular assessments on the coral status.

Abstract Background Bone is a preferential site for prostate cancer (PCa) metastasis. However, sites of synchronous distant metastases in PCa patients with bone metastases at initial diagnosis and their impacts on prognosis are still unclear, limiting our ability to better stratify and treat the patients. In this study, we examined the sites of synchronous extra-skeletal metastases in de novo PCa patients with bone metastases and their associated prognoses. Methods In total, 16,643 de novo PCa patients with bone metastases from the SEER database were included. After stratification of metastatic sites (bone, lung, liver, and brain) and treatment modalities, overall survival (OS) and independent predictors of OS, were analyzed. Results Lung was the most frequent site of synchronous metastases, followed by liver, while brain metastases were relatively uncommon. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is defined as “diagnosed as impaired glucose tolerance for the first time during pregnancy,” which can lead to adverse pregnancy outcomes and produces divergent effects on mothers and newborns. In recent years, with the continuous expansion of obese people, GDM shows an upward trend. The abundant and diverse members of the human gut microbiota exert critical roles in the maintenance of human health. Studies have shown that GDM may be associated with disordered gut microbiota in both mothers and newborns. Taking into account the potential effects on maternal and consequently neonatal health, in this review, we analyzed the available data and discussed the current knowledge about the potential relationship between GDM and intestinal dysbiosis in mothers and newborns. In addition, we also discussed the influencing factors derived from GDM mothers on the gut microbiome of their newborns, including the vertical transmission of microbiota from mothers, the alteration of milk components of GDM mothers, and using of probiotics. Hoping that new insights into the role of the gut microbiota in GDM could lead to the development of integrated strategies to prevent and treat these metabolic disorders.

Aim. To evaluate the prognostic role of the mean platelet volume/lymphocyte ratio (MPVLR) for mortality in patients with hepatitis B virus-related decompensated cirrhosis (HBV-DeCi). Methods. The medical records of 101 patients with HBV-DeCi were retrospectively reviewed, and their baseline clinical and laboratory characteristics were extracted. The predictive value of the MPVLR for death was estimated using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis and a multivariate logistic regression model. Results. Patients with HBV-DeCi in the high-MPVLR group exhibited significantly increased 90-day mortality compared with that of the patients within the low-MPVLR group, and MPVLR was an independent predictor of 90-day mortality in patients with HBV-DeCi. Conclusions. Increased MPVLR is associated with poor outcomes in patients with HBV-DeCi and might be a useful component of future prognostic scores.

Objective. Diarrhea in infants is a serious gastrointestinal dysfunction characterized by vomiting and watery bowel movements. Without proper treatment, infants will develop a dangerous electrolyte imbalance. Diarrhea is accompanied by intestinal dysbiosis. This study compared the gut microbiota between healthy infants and diarrheic infants. It also investigated the effects of age and pathogen type on the gut microbiota of infants with diarrhea, providing data for the proper treatment for diarrhea in infants. Materials and Methods. DNA was collected from the fecal samples of 42 Chinese infants with diarrhea and 37 healthy infants. The healthy infants and infants with diarrhea were divided into four age groups: 0–120, 120–180, 180–270, and 270–365 days. Using PCR and 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing, the diarrhea-causing pathogens in these infants were identified and then categorized into four groups: Salmonella infection, Staphylococcus aureus infection, combined Salmonella and Staphylococcus aureus infection, and others (neither Salmonella nor Staphylococcus aureus). Results. The species diversity of gut microbiota in diarrheic infants was significantly reduced compared with that in healthy infants. Abstract Background Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is very important, and MRI is an effective imaging mode of Alzheimer’s disease. There are many existing studies on the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease based on MRI data. However, there are no studies on the transfer learning between different datasets (including different subjects), thereby improving the sample size of target dataset indirectly. Methods Therefore, a new framework method is proposed in this paper to solve this problem. First, gravity transfer is used to transfer the source domain data closer to the target data set. Secondly, the best deviation between the transferred source domain samples and the target domain samples is searched by instance transfer learning algorithm (ITL) based on wrapper mode, thereby obtaining optimal transferred domain samples. Finally, the optimal transferred domain samples and the target domain training samples are combined for classification. If the source data and the target data have different features, a feature growing algorithm is proposed to solve this problem. Results The experimental results show that the proposed method is effective regardless of different kernel functions, different number of samples and different parameters. Besides, the transferred source domain samples by ITL algorithm can enlarge the target domain training samples and assist to improve the classification accuracy significantly. Conclusions Therefore, the study can enlarge the samples of AD by instance transfer learning, thereby being helpful for the small sample problems of AD. Since the proposed algorithm is a framework algorithm, the study is heuristics to the relevant researchers.

To ensure optimum working conditions for lithium-ion batteries, a numerical study is carried out for three-dimensional temperature distribution of a battery liquid cooling system in this work. The effect of channel size and inlet boundary conditions are evaluated on the temperature field of the battery modules. Based on the thermal behavior of discharging battery obtained experimental measurements, two temperature control strategies are proposed and studied. The results show that the channel width of the cooling plates has a great influence on the maximum temperature in the battery module. It is also revealed that increasing inlet water flow rate can significantly improve the heat transfer capacity of the battery thermal management system, while the relationship between them is not proportional. Lowering the inlet temperature can reduce the maximum temperature predicted in the battery module significantly. However, this will also lead to additional energy consumed by the cooling system. It is also found that the Scheme 5 among various temperature control strategies can ensure the battery pack working in the best temperature range in different depths of discharge. Compared with the traditional one with a given flow rate, the parasitic energy consumption in Scheme 5 can be reduced by around 80%.

During development of substitute anode materials suitable for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), understanding of sintering mechanisms and effects is significant for synthesized porous structures and performance. A molecular dynamics (MD) model is developed and applied in this study for the SOFC anode sintered materials to reveal the sintering condition effects. It is predicted that, for the case of two nanoparticles of electron-conducting La-doped SrTiO3 (LST), the higher the sintering temperature, the faster the aggregation of nanoparticles and the higher the sintering degree. An increase in the nanoparticle size could delay the sintering, process but does not affect the final sintering degree. The MD model is further applied for the case of the multi-nanoparticles containing LST and ion-conducting electrolyte materials of gadolinium-doped ceria (GDC), i.e., the LST-GDC particles. The sintering conditions and effects on the LST-GDC particles are evaluated, in terms of the mean square displacement (MSD) and various structural parameters. Two important thermal properties are also calculated that agree well with the experimental values. The findings obtained from this study are useful to identify the optimized sintering parameters for development of the SOFC electrode materials.

Currently, there has been a new trend in applying modern robotics, information technology, and artificial intelligence to restaurants for improvements of food service, cost-effectiveness, and customer satisfaction. As robots replace humans to serve food, there is a clear need for robotic servers to help consumers select foods from a menu that satisfies their preferences such as taste and nutrition. However, currently, little is known about how eating behaviors drive food choices, and it is often difficult for consumers to make choices from a variety of foods offered by the typical restaurant, even with the assistance from a human server. In this paper, we conduct an exploratory study on an intelligent food choice method that recommends dishes by predicting individual's dietary preference, including ingredients, types of spices, price, etc. A multi-attribute relation matrix tri-factorization (MARMTF) technique is developed for a relation-driven food recommendation system. First, the user's ordering history and their rating scores of the foods in the menu are gathered and represented by a user-dish rating matrix. Next, the attribute relations of the ingredients, spicy level, and price of each food choice are extracted to construct a group of the relation matrices. Then, these matrices are integrated into a large block matrix. In the next step, a matrix tri-factorization algorithm is employed to decompose the block matrix and fuse the complex relationships into matrix factors. Further, a set of approximation block matrices are constructed and the predicted food rating matrix is generated. Finally, the foods (dishes) with sufficiently high preference scores are recommended to the consumers. Our experiments demonstrate that the MARMTF technique can provide effective dish recommendation for customers. Our system significantly simplifies the daunting task of making food choices and has a great potential in providing intelligent and professionally trained non-human waiters and waitresses for employment by future restaurants.

Electrical impedance spectroscopy is a widespread characterization method for solids or fluids in industrial applications. We here report on its thermal equivalent, the “thermal impedance spectroscopy”, improved by using a temperature compensation method for temperature dependent thermal measurements using an on-chip reference resistor.

OBJECTS: To introduce a new method for generating the clinical target volume (CTV) from gross tumor volume (GTV) using the geodesic distance calculation for glioma. METHODS: One glioblastoma patient was enrolled. The GTV and natural barriers were contoured on each slice of the computer tomography (CT) simulation images. Then, a graphic processing unit based on a parallel Euclidean distance transform was used to generate the CTV considering natural barriers. Three-dimensional (3D) visualization technique was applied to show the delineation results. Speed of operation and precision were compared between this new delineation method and the traditional method. RESULTS: In considering spatial barriers, the shortest distance from the point sheltered from these barriers equals the sum of the distance along the shortest path between the two points; this consists of several segments and evades the spatial barriers, rather than being the direct Euclidean distance between two points. The CTV was generated irregularly rather than as a spherical shape. The time required to generate the CTV was greatly reduced. Moreover, this new method improved inter- and intra-observer variability in defining the CTV. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with the traditional CTV delineation, this new method using geodesic distance calculation not only greatly shortens the time to modify the CTV, but also has better reproducibility.
