Objective. To comprehensively explore the survival characteristics of primary esophageal small-cell carcinoma (PSCCE) and identify the main factors affecting the prognosis. Methods. The clinical and follow-up data of PSCCE patients admitted to the Fourth Hospital of Hebei Medical University from 2006 to 2010 were retrospectively analyzed. The primary endpoint was five-year survival. Survival curves were drawn using the Kaplan-Meier method, and log-rank test was used to compare the differences in survival rates among the groups. Cox regression models were used to analyze prognostic factors. Results. A total of 119 eligible patients were retrieved. Median survival was 27 months (3-100 months). Changes in overall survival (OS) in PSCCE patients were associated with TNM stage ( P = 0.007 ), T stage ( P = 0.049 ), and lymph node metastasis ( P = 0.004 ). When TNM was in stage I-IIb, lymph node metastasis ( P = 0.003 ) or combined adjuvant therapy ( P = 0.004 ) was an independent factor affecting OS. Survival analysis showed that TNM staging had no predictive value for 5-year survival time or disease-free survival (DFS) of PSCCE ( P > 0.05 ). Conclusion. TNM stage, T stage, and lymph node metastasis were related to the survival of patients. Negative lymph node metastasis and treatment are independent prognostic factors in PSCCE TNM stage I-IIb patients.

Twelve tumours (57.1%) showed a complete response, and a partial response was observed in seven tumours (33.3%). The six-month objective response rate was 90.5% (19/21). The adverse effects of CT-guided 125I brachytherapy were tolerable.Conclusion: Our preliminary clinical experience demonstrated that CT-guided 125I brachytherapy was effective and well tolerated for the treatment of TACE-refractory HCC, suggesting that CT-guided 125I brachytherapy has the potential to become an effective alternative treatment for TACE-refractory HCC.Keywords: 125I brachytherapy, TACE, refractory, hepatocellular carcinoma

BACKGROUND We previously showed, using the Traditional Chinese Medicine System Pharmacology Database, that Gegen Qinlian decoction (GQD) had a direct antitumor effect, and was combined with programmed cell death protein (PD)-1 inhibitors to treat microsatellite stable (MSS) tumor-bearing mice. However, the effect of GQD on patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) is not clear. AIM To determine the therapeutic mechanism of GQD in improving immune function, reducing inflammation and protecting intestinal barrier function. METHODS Seventy patients with CRC were included in this study: 37 in the control group and 33 in the treatment group. The proportions of CD4+ T, CD8+ T, natural killer (NK), NKT and T regulatory cells were measured by flow cytometry. Levels of the cytokines tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interferon (IFN)-γ, interleukin (IL)-2, IL-6, IL-10 and serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) in serum were assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The expression of zonula occludens (ZO)-1, occludin, nuclear factor (NF)-κB and TNF-α in tumor and normal tissues was measured by immunohistochemistry. The composition of gut microbiota from patients in the treatment group was assessed using 16S rDNA analysis. RESULTS There were no adverse events in the treatment group. The proportion of CD4+ T cells and NKT cells in the post-treatment group was significantly higher than that in the pre-treatment and control groups (P < 0.05). The level of TNF-α in the post-treatment group was significantly lower than that in the pre-treatment and control groups (P < 0.05). The concentration of 5-HT in the post-treatment group was significantly lower than that in the pre-treatment group (P < 0.05). The expression of ZO-1 and occludin in tumor tissues in the treatment group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P < 0.05). The expression of ZO-1 in normal tissues of the treatment group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P = 0.010). Compared with the control group, expression of NF-κB and TNF-α in tumor tissues of the treatment group was significantly decreased (P < 0.05). Compared with the pre-treatment group, GQD decreased the relative abundance of Megamonas and Veillonella. In addition, GQD increased the relative abundance of Bacteroides, Akkermansia and Prevotella. CONCLUSION GQD enhances immunity and protects intestinal barrier function in patients with CRC by regulating the composition of gut microbiota.

Background Both diaphragmatic hernia and thoracic gastropericardial fistula rarely occur simultaneously in patients with radical esophagectomy. Case presentation A 72-year-old man presented to our hospital with 1 day of nausea, vomiting and acute left chest pain. He had radical esophagectomy (Sweet approach) for esophageal cancer 18 years ago. Computed tomography (CT) of the chest revealed diaphragmatic hernias and air collection within the pericardial space. While an operation of diaphragmatic hernia repair was decisively performed to prevent further serious complications, unusually, a thoracic gastropericardial fistula was also found unusually. Conclusion Diaphragmatic hernia and thoracic gastropericardial fistula may occasionally coexist in patients with esophagectomy. Upper GI radiograph with a water-soluble contrast agent is a better diagnostic tool than CT in visualizing the fistula.

Purposes Surgical site infection (SSI) after colorectal surgery is a frequent complication associated with the increase in morbidity, medical expenses, and mortality. To date, there is no nationwide large-scale database of SSI after colorectal surgery in China. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of SSI after colorectal surgery in China and to further evaluate the related risk factors. Methods Two multicenter, prospective, cross-sectional studies covering 55 hospitals in China and enrolling adult patients undergoing colorectal surgery were conducted from May 1 to June 30 of 2018 and the same time of 2019. The demographic and perioperative characteristics were collected, and the main outcome was SSI within postoperative 30 days. Multivariable logistic regressions were conducted to predict risk factors of SSI after colorectal surgery. Results In total, 1046 patients were enrolled and SSI occurred in 74 patients (7.1%). In the multivariate analysis with adjustments, significant factors associated with SSI were the prior diagnosis of hypertension (OR, 1.903; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.088–3.327, P = 0.025), national nosocomial infection surveillance risk index score of 2 or 3 (OR, 3.840; 95% CI, 1.926–7.658, P P P = 0.018). In addition, SSI group had remarkably increased length of postoperative stays (median, 15.0 d versus 9.0d, P P P = 0.006), compared with those of non-SSI group. Conclusion This study provides the newest data of SSI after colorectal surgery in China and finds some predictors of SSI. The data presented in our study can be a tool to develop optimal preventive measures and improve surgical quality in China.

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the chest CT manifestations of COVID-19 and its CT evolving process to explore its inherent outcomes. Methods: Inpatients diagnosed with COVID-19 at the Enze Hospital from January 17, 2020 to February 15, 2020 were included. The evolving characteristics of CT manifestations and treatment outcomes were analyzed. Results: Twenty-two patients with COVID-19 were included in the study. Clinical symptoms at the time of onset included fever (n=19) and cough (n=8). The first CT findings mainly included ground-glass opacities (GGOs) (n=18), lung consolidation (n=7), interlobular septal thickening (n=5), and fibrosis-like stripes (n=4). Dynamic CT showed GGOs, lung consolidation, and fibrosis-like stripes, all of which demonstrated a trend that initially increased in number, and then gradually decreased in number or disappeared. According to the characteristics of CT evolution. COVID-19 could be divided into early stage, progressing stage, recovery stage, and dissipation stage. The median times of the respective stages were: early stage - 3 days (1-8 days) after disease onset, progressing stage - 7 days (4-17 days) after onset, recovery stage - 10 days (8-14 days) after onset, and dissipation stage - 19.5 days (11-25 days) after onset. Conclusions: COVID-19 has an acute onset, with main imaging manifestations of different types of GGO with or without lung consolidation in the subpleural regions of the bilateral lungs. The CT manifestations of lung lesions change rapidly. The lung lesions of mild and ordinary types of COVID-19 may improve significantly or disappear in a short period after active treatment, with good prognosis. Moreover, fibrosislike stripes may be a sign of atelectasis of sub-segment lung tissue of COVID-19 and may be a specific sign for the diagnosis of COVID-19.

To evaluate the efficacy and safety of TAE/TACE versus emergency surgery (ES) for spontaneous rupture of HCC (rHCC). Eight databases (Web of Science, Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane Library, ClinicalTrial.gov, Wanfang, CNKI and VIP) were searched to obtain all related literature from the inception dates to October 2019. The heart and neural crest derivatives expressed 2 antisense RNA 1 (HAND2-AS1) is a novel long noncoding RNA aberrantly expressed in human malignancies. We aimed to analyze the available data to evaluate the clinical prognostic significance of HAND2-AS1 in tumors.In this meta-analysis, electronic databases, including PubMed Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Medline, Web of Science, CNKI, and Wanfang, were searched from their inception up to December 1, 2021. The pooled hazard ratios (HRs) or odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated to assess the relationship of HAND2-AS1expression level with prognosis and clinicopathological features in cancer patients. The publication bias was identified by Begg's test, and the sensitivity analysis was also performed.A total of 10 articles with 615 patients were included in the present meta-analysis. The combined results revealed that low expression of HAND2-AS1 was associated with poor overall survival (OS) (HR = 0.48, 95% CI: 0.36-0.64, P .001) in a variety of cancers. In addition, the decrease in HAND2-AS1 expression was also correlated with poor differentiation (OR = 4.36, 95% CI: 2.15-8.87, P .001) and lymph node metastasis (OR = 0.26, 95% CI: 0.13-0.54, P .001). The cancer genome atlas (TCGA) dataset further demonstrated that low expression of HAND2-AS1 was associated with poor OS and disease-free survival.Our results of this meta-analysis indicated that HAND2-AS1 may be a prognostic marker and even a therapeutic target for human cancer.

A large number of experiments show that PtCu catalyst has a good catalytic effect on methanol decomposition. Therefore, density functional theory (DFT) was used to further study the dehydrogenation of methanol catalyzed by PtnCum (n = 1–3, m = 0–2). The energy diagrams of O-adsorption path and H-adsorption path were drawn. By calculation, the Pt is the active site of the whole reaction process, and the barrier energy of the rate-determining step is 11.09 kcal mol−1 by Pt2Cu, which is lower than that of Pt3 and PtCu2. However, the complete dehydrogenation product of methanol, CO, is easier to dissociate from PtCu2 clusters than from Pt3 and Pt2Cu clusters. Therefore, Cu doping can improve the catalytic activity and anti-CO toxicity of Pt to a certain extent.

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a malignant and fatal parasitic disease caused by the larvae of Echinococcus multilocularis (E. multilocularis), which inhibits the activity and proliferation of natural killer (NK) cells. In this study, the functional alteration of hepatic NK cells and their related molecules were studied. The AE-infected patient’s tissue was fixed with formalin, embedded in paraffin, and stained with Masson’s trichrome or hematoxylin and eosin (H&E). Single cells from AE-infected patient or E. multilocularis-infected mice were blocked with Fc-receptor (FcR), and stained with monoclonal antibodies, including CD16, CD56, CD3, KIR2DL1, granzyme B, perforin, Interferon gamma (IFN-γ), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) or isotype control, to measure molecules and cytokines of NK cells and analyzed by flow cytometry. The Sirius red staining was used to quantitate hepatic fibrosis by calculating quantitative collagen deposition. AE can adjust both the number of hepatic CD56+ NK cells and its KIR2DL1 expression processes. Moreover, the overexpression of KIR2DL1 in NK cells could downregulate the functioning of immune cells in the liver area close to parasitic lesions. The number and dysfunction of NK cells in E. multilocularis infection could be related to the molecule dynamics of cell surface inhibitory receptor Ly49A, leading to hepatic damage and progression of fibrosis. This study illustrated significant increase in hepatic fibrogenesis and apparent upregulation of hepatic CD56+ NK cell population and its KIR2DL1 expression in AE-infected patients. This opposite variation might be related to the impaired NK cells functioning, such as granzyme B, IFN-γ, and TNF-α secretion. In addition, the cell surface inhibitory receptor Ly49A was related to the intracellular cytokine secretion functions of NK cells.

Therapeutic antibodies targeting PD-1 have made major breakthroughs in cancer treatment. However, the majority of colorectal cancer (CRC) cases are microsatellite stable (MSS) and do not respond to anti-PD-1-based immunotherapy. Combination therapy will be an ideal strategy to overcome this limitation. Gegen Qinlian decoction (GQD), a classical traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula, has been clinically proven to be effective in the treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC) and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Here, a systemic pharmacological study revealed that GQD acts through multiple targets and pathways in the human body. Combination therapy with GQD and anti-mouse PD-1 potently inhibited the growth of CT26 tumours in a xenograft model. Gut microbiota analysis revealed that combination therapy with GQD and anti-mouse PD-1 significantly enriched for s__Bacteroides_acidifaciens and s__uncultured_organism_g__norank_f__Bacteroidales_S24-7_group. Based on metabolomic analyses, profoundly altered metabolites were identified in the combination therapy group. Two metabolic signalling pathways, namely, glycerophospholipid metabolism and sphingolipid metabolism, were explored. In particular, we found that combination therapy with GQD and anti-mouse PD-1 significantly increased the proportion of CD8+ T cells in peripheral blood and tumour tissues. Direct treatment with GQD and anti-mouse PD-1 increased the expression of IFN-γ, which is a critical factor in antitumour immunotherapy. In addition, combination therapy with GQD and anti-mouse PD-1 downregulated PD-1 and increased IL-2 levels, suggesting that the combination therapy could effectively restore T-cell functions by suppressing inhibitory checkpoints. The application of the Chinese medicinal formula GQD with PD-1 blockade-based immunotherapy can be a novel therapeutic strategy for CRC patients with MSS tumours.

Objective: To investigate the evolution and characteristics of "fibrosis-like" strips on chest CT in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. Methods: From January 17, 2020, to February 27, 2020, inpatients diagnosed with COVID-19 pneumonia in Enze Hospital, Taizhou, Zhejiang Province, were selected. The chest CT data of the patients were collected, and patients were included in the present study according to the predefined inclusion criteria. The dynamic evolution process and outcome of "fibrosis-like" strips on chest CT were analyzed.Results: A total of 36 patients (20 males and 16 females) with COVID-19 were included in the study, all of whom were diagnosed with mild or common COVID-19; "fibrosis-like" strips were observed in 29 patients (80.6%) on the first chest CT scan, and "fibrosis-like" strips were observed in 7 patients (19.4%) on the second chest CT scan, Repeated chest CT during the course of treatment showed that all patients with "fibrosis-like" strips had varying degrees of absorption. "Fibrosis-like" strips in 15 patients demonstrated a trend of first increasing in number, and then decreasing in number; "fibrosis-like" strips in 3 patients demonstrated a trend of first decreasing in number first, followed by an increase in number and then a decrease in number; and "fibrosis-like" strips in 18 patients demonstrated a trend of a gradual decrease in number. Follow-up chest CT after treatment showed that "fibrosis-like" strips in 15 patients completely disappeared in both lungs, and "fibrosis-like" strips completely disappeared in unilateral lung of 8 cases.Conclusion: In the present study, we observed that "fibrosis-like" strips in COVID-19 patients had characteristics of early appearance and rapid morphological changes as well as rapid absorption, suggesting that "fibrosis-like" strips may be a sign of subsegmental atelectasis rather than fibrotic changes.

Varroa destructor is by far the most serious threat to the western honey bee, Apis mellifera. A screen bottom board, a cultural method for mite control, is a modified bottom board with a screen that allows mites to fall onto a sticky board, or the grass or soil below the screen. Whether or not a screen bottom board can reduce varroa significantly has been controversial. Most studies show a trend of lower varroa populations in colonies with these boards, but the results are usually not statistically significant. To understand whether the negative results have been due to small sample sizes, or because the board is actually ineffective, we conducted a meta-analysis with seven published studies with a total of 145 colonies. Meta-analysis showed that the confidence intervals of the combined effect sizes were negative with a Hedges&rsquo, g of &minus, 1.09 (SE 0.39, 95% CI &minus, 2.0 to &minus, 0.19, p &lt, 0.01), which suggests that the varroa population in colonies with screen bottom boards is significantly lower compared to those with traditional wooden floors. We thus conclude that the screen bottom board does have a significantly negative impact on the varroa population and can be part of tool kits for mite control.

Background. Programmed cell death receptor 1 (PD-1) and T cell immunoglobulin mucin-3 (Tim-3) are considered as important immunosuppressive molecules and play an important role in tumor immune escape and cancer progression. However, it remains unclear whether PD-1 and Tim-3 are coexpressed in stage I-III colorectal cancer (CRC) and how they impact on the prognosis of the disease. Materials and Methods. A total of two cohorts with 451 patients who underwent surgery for stage I-III CRC treatment were enrolled in the study. Among which, 378 cases were from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database and 73 cases were from the Fourth Hospital of Hebei Medical University (FHHMU) cohort. The mRNA expressions of PD-1 and Tim-3 in tumor tissue in stage I-III CRC were obtained from TCGA database. Immunohistochemistry was used to assess the expressions of PD-1 and Tim-3 in tumor tissue in stage I-III CRC in the FHHMU cohort. Interactive relationships between PD-1 and Tim-3 were retrieved through the online STRING database, which was used to study the interactions between proteins. DAVID, consisting of comprehensive biological function annotation information, was applied for the GO and KEGG pathway enrichment analysis of the interactive genes. Results. In the FHHMU cohort, the high expressions of PD-1 and Tim-3 were, respectively, found in 42.47% and 84.93% of stage I-III CRC tissue. PD-1 was significantly associated with age, primary site, and lymphatic metastasis. Tim-3 was closely related to the primary site. Correlation analysis showed that PD-1 and Tim-3 were positively correlated (r=0.5682, P<0.001). In TCGA cohort, PD-1 and Tim-3 were associated with the prognosis of CRC patients in terms of 5-year survival (P<0.05). In the FHHMU cohort, the 5-year survival of patients with high levels of PD-1 and Tim-3 was 54.84% and 65.85%, respectively. Among which, the high expression of PD-1 was associated with poor prognosis (5-year OS: 54.84% vs. 88.10%, P=0.003). The 5-year survival rate of CRC patients with coexpression of PD-1 and Tim-3 was 45.00%, which was significantly worse than non-coexpression (72.73%, 85.71%, and 90.48% separately). The functional network of PD-1 and Tim-3 primarily participates in the regulation of immune cell activation and proliferation, immune cell receptor complex, cell adhesion molecules, and T cell receptor signaling pathway. Conclusion. In summary, upregulation of PD-1 and Tim-3 in stage I-III CRC tumor tissue could be associated with the poor prognosis of patients. Those patients with coexpression of PD-1 and Tim-3 may have a significantly worse prognosis.

We have comparatively investigated the adsorption behaviors of Sc atom on the external and internal surfaces of the pristine, Stone-Wales (SW), and single-vacancy (SV) defect nanotubes based on the density functional theory. Our results reveal that the stability of Sc atom onto the external and internal surfaces of the carbon nanotubes is in following orders by defect: SV>SW1>SW2>pristine (external surfaces), SV>SW2>SW1>pristine (internal surfaces). To explore the reactivity of Sc@CNT/SW/SV complexes which can serve as a gas sensor or a catalyst in direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC), the interaction between a CO molecule and Sc@CNT/SW/SV is also examined. The SV defect in carbon nanotubes can make the confined Sc atom with good CO adsorption property, while the confined Sc in the SW defect carbon nanotube has good anti-CO poisoning. By our studies, it plays an important guidance role in improving the activity of metal catalyst and the sensitivity and stability of metal particles to functional molecules, and provides the theoretical basis for designing new carbon nanotube-based metal catalyst.

According to the requirements of meter reading in the station area, the design principle and remote communication scheme of the system are established, and the overall design scheme of the system is established. In view of the shortcomings of GSM communication, GPRS data communication scheme is adopted. According to the working principle of the system, the data acquisition, digital-analog conversion and data transmission processes are analyzed and studied, which improves the data transmission capability of the system. In the hardware design of the system, the main controller adopts AT89C51 8-bit MCU, serial communication includes RS-232, RS-485 and various communication interfaces. The design of sampling circuit combines filter circuit and phase-locked loop circuit, which effectively improves the accuracy of data acquisition and anti-interference ability.

To better understand the morphological characteristics of Apis cerana after a long-time in isolation from the Chinese mainland, coupled with the impact of recent exotic gene flow, multivariate morphometric analyses of A. cerana in Hainan Island were undertaken. A total of 1,020 worker bees of A. cerana were collected from three localities in Guangdong Province, nine localities in Hainan province, and five apiaries that were introduced from the adjacent mainland over two years.
