Unnecessary exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) often causes acute and chronic oxidative damages to normal cells and organs, leading to serious physiological and even life-threatening consequences. Amifostine (AMF) is a validated radioprotectant extensively applied in radiation and chemotherapy medicine, but the short half-life limits its bioavailability and clinical applications, remaining as a great challenge to be addressed. DNA-assembled nanostructures especially the tetrahedral framework nucleic acids (tFNAs) are promising nanocarriers with preeminent biosafety, low biotoxicity, and high transport efficiency. The tFNAs also have a relative long-term maintenance for structural stability and excellent endocytosis capacity. We therefore synthesized a tFNA-based delivery system of AMF for multi-organ radioprotection (tFNAs@AMF, also termed nanosuit). By establishing the mice models of accidental total body irradiation (TBI) and radiotherapy model of Lewis lung cancer, we demonstrated that the nanosuit could shield normal cells from IR-induced DNA damage by regulating the molecular biomarkers of anti-apoptosis and anti-oxidative stress. In the accidental total body irradiation (TBI) mice model, the nanosuit pretreated mice exhibited satisfactory alteration of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents, and functional recovery of hematopoietic system, reducing IR-induced pathological damages of multi-organ and safeguarding mice from lethal radiation. More importantly, the nanosuit showed a selective radioprotection of the normal organs without interferences of tumor control in the radiotherapy model of Lewis lung cancer. Based on a conveniently available DNA tetrahedron-based nanocarrier, this work presents a high-efficiency delivery system of AMF with the prolonged half-life and enhanced radioprotection for multi-organs. Such nanosuit pioneers a promising strategy with great clinical translation potential for radioactivity protection.

Abstract Federated learning (FL) enables users to train the global model cooperatively without exposing their private data across the engaged parties, which is widely used in privacy-sensitive business. However, during the life cycle of FL models, both adversaries’ attacks and ownership generalization threaten the FL models’ copyright and affect the models’ reliability. To address these problems, existing model watermarking techniques can be used to verify FL model’s ownership. However, due to the lack of credible binding from “model extracted watermarks” to “ownership verification”, it is difficult to form a closed-loop watermarking framework for copyright protection. Therefore, starting from the shortcomings of the current watermark verification scheme, this article proposed WFB, a blockchain-empowered watermarking framework for ownership verification of federated models. Firstly, we propose a improved watermark generation algorithm to solve the credibility issue of watermarks. Secondly, we propose a watermark embedding method in federated learning, while blockchain technology is used to ensure the credible storage of watermark information throughout the process. Thirdly, the credibility of ownership verification is improved because of the watermark authenticity. Experimental results demonstrate the fidelity, effectiveness and robustness of WFB, with other superiorities such as improving process security and traceability.

Modern rice production faces the dual challenges of increasing grain yields while reducing inputs of chemical fertilizer. However, the disequilibrium between the nitrogen (N) supplement from the soil and the demand for N of plants is a serious obstacle to achieving these goals. Plant-based diagnosis can help farmers make better choices regarding the timing and amount of topdressing N fertilizer. Our objective was to evaluate a non-destructive assessment of rice N demands based on the relative SPAD value (RSPAD) due to leaf positional differences. In this study, two field experiments were conducted, including a field experiment of different N rates (Exp. I) and an experiment to evaluate the new strategy of nitrogen-split application based on RSPAD (Exp. II). The results showed that higher N inputs significantly increased grain yield in modern high yielding super rice, but at the expense of lower nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). The N nutrition index (NNI) can adequately differentiate situations of excessive, optimal, and insufficient N nutrition in rice, and the optimal N rate for modern high yielding rice is higher than conventional cultivars. The RSPAD is calculated as the SPAD value of the top fully expanded leaf vs. the value of the third leaf, which takes into account the non-uniform N distribution within a canopy. The RSPAD can be used as an indicator for higher yield and NUE, and guide better management of N fertilizer application. Furthermore, we developed a new strategy of nitrogen-split application based on RSPAD, in which the N rate was reduced by 18.7%, yield was increased by 1.7%, and the agronomic N use efficiency was increased by 27.8%, when compared with standard farmers’ practices. This strategy of N fertilization shows great potential for ensuring high yielding and improving NUE at lower N inputs.

Understanding interactions between viruses and their hosts is conducive to enabling better application of viruses as biocontrol agents. Certain viruses carried by parasitic wasps enhance the parasitic efficiency of wasp-larvae by protecting them against the immune system of their Lepidopteran host. However, the relationship between prey pests and viruses found in predatory natural enemies remains unclear. Herein, we report the interaction between Arma chinensis virus-1 (AcV-1), originally isolated from a predatory natural enemy, Arma chinensis (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), and one of its prey species, Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). The results showed that the AcV-1 virus appeared harmful to the novel host S. frugiperda by inhibiting larval diet consumption and increasing pupal mortality. Meanwhile, sequencing data indicated that the virus altered the gene expression profiles of S. frugiperda. KEGG analysis showed that the proteasome and phagosome pathways related to protein degradation and immune response were significantly enriched. Although the expression levels of digestive enzyme genes did not change significantly, the total protease activity of AcV-1 virus-positive individuals was significantly decreased, suggesting that the virus inhibited diet consumption of S. frugiperda via the down-regulation of digestive enzyme activities. These results indicate that a virus initially isolated in a predatory natural enemy can decrease the fitness of its prey species. The virus was found to impact the host proteasome and phagosome pathways related to protein degradation and immunity, providing a potential mechanism to enhance controlling efficiency.

Abstract Objective The objective of this retrospective cohort study is to investigate the impact of monitoring serum estradiol (E2) levels before progesterone administration within hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on pregnancy outcomes in women undergoing frozen-thawed embryo transfer (FET). Methods Analyzed HRT-FET cycles conducted at a reproductive center from 2017 to 2022. Serum E2 levels were measured prior to progesterone administration. Multivariate stratified and logistic regression analyses were performed on 26,194 patients grouped according to terciles of serum E2 levels before progesterone administration. Results The clinical pregnancy rate (CPR) and live birth rate (LBR) exhibited a gradual decline with increasing serum E2 levels across the three E2 groups. Even after controlling for potential confounders, including female age, body mass index, infertility diagnosis, cycle category, number of embryos transferred, fertilization method, indication for infertility, and endometrial thickness, both CPR and LBR persistently showed a gradual decrease as serum E2 levels increased within the three E2 groups. The same results were obtained by multivariate logistic regression analysis. Conclusions This large retrospective study indicates that elevated serum E2 levels before progesterone administration during HRT-FET cycles are associated with reduced CPR and LBR post-embryo transfer. Therefore, it is advisable to monitor serum E2 levels and adjust treatment strategies accordingly to maximize patient outcomes.

Abstract The prevalence of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for 85% of all lung cancers, with the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway exhibiting robust activation in this particular subtype. The expression of FAM83A (family with sequence similarity 83, member A) has been found to be significantly upregulated in lung cancer, leading to the stabilization of β-catenin and activation of the Wnt signaling pathway. In this study, we conducted a screening of down-regulated miRNAs in lung cancer with FAM83A as the target. Ultimately, we identified miR-1 as a negative regulator of FAM83A and confirmed that FAM83A is a direct target gene of miR-1 through dual luciferase reporter assays. The overexpression of miR-1 significantly attenuated the expression level of FAM83A and suppressed the Wnt signaling pathway, leading to a reduction in the expression levels of downstream target genes AXIN2, CyclinD1, and C-MYC. Additionally, it decreased the nuclear translocation of β-catenin. In addition, overexpression of miR-1 accelerated the degradation of β-catenin by inhibiting FAM83A, promoted the assembly of β-catenin degradation complex, and inhibited the proliferation, migration and invasion of NSCLC cells. In summary, miR-1 may be a potential candidate miRNA for the treatment of NSCLC.

Considering the problem of radar target detection in the sea clutter environment, this paper proposes a deep learning-based marine target detector. The proposed detector increases the differences between the target and clutter by fusing multiple complementary features extracted from different data sources, thereby improving the detection performance for marine targets. Specifically, the detector uses two feature extraction branches to extract multiple levels of fast-time and range features from the range profiles and the range-Doppler (RD) spectrum, respectively. Subsequently, the local-global feature extraction structure is developed to extract the sequence relations from the slow time or Doppler dimension of the features. Furthermore, the feature fusion block is proposed based on adaptive convolution weight learning to efficiently fuse slow-fast time and RD features. Finally, the detection results are obtained through upsampling and nonlinear mapping to the fused multiple levels of features. Experiments on two public radar databases validated the detection performance of the proposed detector.

Abstract High-quality spatial atmospheric delay correction information is essential for achieving fast integer ambiguity resolution (AR) in precise positioning. However, traditional real-time precise positioning frameworks (i.e., NRTK and PPP-RTK) depend on spatial low-resolution atmospheric delay correction through the expensive and sparsely distributed CORS network. This results in limited public appeal. With the mass production of autonomous driving vehicles, more cost-effective and widespread data sources can be explored to create spatial high-resolution atmospheric maps. In this study, we propose a new GNSS positioning framework that relies on dual base stations, massive vehicle GNSS data, and crowdsourced atmospheric delay correction maps (CAM). The map is easily produced and updated by vehicles equipped with GNSS receivers in a crowd-sourced way. Specifically, the map consists of between-station single-differenced ionospheric and tropospheric delays. We introduce the whole framework of CAM initialization for individual vehicles, on-cloud CAM maintenance, and CAM-augmented user-end positioning. The map data are collected and preprocessed in vehicles. Then, the crowdsourced data are uploaded to a cloud server. The massive data from multiple vehicles are merged in the cloud to update the CAM in time. Finally, the CAM will augment the user positioning performance. This framework forms a beneficial cycle where the CAM’s spatial resolution and the user positioning performance mutually improve each other. We validate the performance of the proposed framework in real-world experiments and the applied potency at different spatial scales. We highlight that this framework is a reliable and practical positioning solution that meets the requirements of ubiquitous high-precision positioning.

Abstract Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are reticular structures composed of neutrophil elastase (NE), cathepsin G (CG) and DNA-histone enzyme complexes. Accumulating evidence has revealed that NETs play important roles in tumor progression, metastasis, and thrombosis. However, our understanding of its clinical value and mechanism of action in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is limited and has not yet been systematically described. Here, we aimed to investigate the clinical significance of NETs in OSCC and the mechanisms by which they affect its invasive and metastatic capacity. Our results demonstrated that high enrichment of NETs is associated with poor prognosis in OSCC, and mechanistic studies have shown that NE in NETs promotes invasion and metastasis via NLRP3-mediated inhibition of pyroptosis in OSCC. These findings may provide a new therapeutic approach for OSCC.

Recently developed ‘super’ rice cultivars with greater yield potentials often suffer from the problem of poor grain filling, especially in inferior spikelets. Here, we studied the activities of enzymes related to starch metabolism in rice stems and grains, and the microstructures related to carbohydrate accumulation and transportation to investigate the effects of different water regimes on grain filling. Two ‘super’ rice cultivars were grown under two irrigation regimes of well-watered (WW) and alternate wetting and moderate soil drying (AWMD). Compared with the WW treatment, the activities of ADP glucose pyrophosphorylase (AGPase), starch synthase (StSase) and starch branching enzyme (SBE), and the accumulation of non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs) in the stems before heading were significantly improved, and more starch granules were stored in the stems in the AWMD treatment. After heading, the activities of α-amylase, β-amylase, sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS) and sucrose synthase in the synthetic direction (SSs) were increased in the stems to promote the remobilization of NSCs for grain filling under AWMD. During grain filling, the enzymatic activities of sucrose synthase in the cleavage direction (SSc), AGPase, StSase and SBE in the inferior spikelets were increased, which promoted grain filling, especially for the inferior spikelets under AWMD. However, there were no significant differences in vascular microstructures. The grain yield and grain weight could be improved by 13.1 and 7.5%, respectively, by optimizing of the irrigation regime. We concluded that the low activities of key enzymes in carbon metabolism is the key limitation for the poor grain filling, as opposed to the vascular microstructures, and AWMD can increase the amount of NSC accumulation in the stems before heading, improve the utilization rate of NSCs after heading, and increase the grain filling, especially in the inferior spikelets, by altering the activities of key enzymes in carbon metabolism.

Thus far, Mo/Ag laminated metal matrix composites (LMMCs) have been widely used as interconnectors in solar cells. In order to enhance the connection strength between Mo–Ag LMMCs and solar cells, a multi-scale simulation technique (MSM) was utilised to simulate the parallel gap resistance welding (PGRW) process. This method involved molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and the finite element method (FEM). The structure of the Mo–Ag diffusion layer was examined by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), which revealed a thickness of around 5 nm. It exhibited a wedge-shaped configuration that augmented the bonding between Mo and Ag. The characteristics of the Mo–Ag diffusion layer were computed using molecular dynamics (MD), which has a substantial influence on the properties of the interconnectors. The FEM model was provided with these characteristics, and a total of nine sets of orthogonal simulation experiments were devised. The findings indicate that when a voltage of 0.5 V is applied, the distance between the electrodes is 0.15 mm, and the pressure on the electrodes is 8.89 N, the temperature at the interface of the workpiece can reach 940 °C. Furthermore, the internal stress (90 MPa) remains below the material's yield strength (430 MPa). In addition, based on the specifications of nine sets of orthogonal trials, the interconnectors were welded to the solar cells, and further 45° tensile tests were performed on the resulting joints. According to the simulation, the connection strength can achieve a maximum value of 558 gf (5.47 N) using the optimal parameters. Meanwhile, the findings from electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) revealed that the primary process involved in the connection mechanism of PGRW is the mutual diffusion and recrystallization that occur due to electrode pressure and resistance heat.

Abstract Background Basal-like breast cancer (BLBC) is the most aggressive subtype of breast cancer due to its aggressive characteristics and lack of effective therapeutics. However, the mechanism underlying its aggressiveness remains largely unclear. S-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase proenzyme (AMD1) overexpression occurs specifically in BLBC. Here, we explored the potential molecular mechanisms and functions of AMD1 promoting the aggressiveness of BLBC. Methods The potential effects of AMD1 on breast cancer cells were tested by western blotting, colony formation, cell proliferation assay, migration and invasion assay. The spermidine level was determined by high performance liquid chromatography. The methylation status of CpG sites within the AMD1 promoter was evaluated by bisulfite sequencing PCR. We elucidated the relationship between AMD1 and Sox10 by ChIP assays and quantitative real-time PCR. The effect of AMD1 expression on breast cancer cells was evaluated by in vitro and in vivo tumorigenesis model. Results In this study, we showed that AMD1 expression was remarkably elevated in BLBC. AMD1 copy number amplification, hypomethylation of AMD1 promoter and transcription activity of Sox10 contributed to the overexpression of AMD1 in BLBC. AMD1 overexpression enhanced spermidine production, which enhanced eIF5A hypusination, activating translation of TCF4 with multiple conserved Pro-Pro motifs. Our studies showed that AMD1-mediated metabolic system of polyamine in BLBC cells promoted tumor cell proliferation and tumor growth. Clinically, elevated expression of AMD1 was correlated with high grade, metastasis and poor survival, indicating poor prognosis of breast cancer patients. Conclusion Our work reveals the critical association of AMD1-mediated spermidine-eIF5A hypusination-TCF4 axis with BLBC aggressiveness, indicating potential prognostic indicators and therapeutic targets for BLBC.

ObjectiveThis study aimed to compare clinical features, laboratory findings, and immunotherapy responses between antibody-positive and antibody-negative Autoimmune encephalitis (AE) patients.MethodsA retrospective analysis of clinical data from 60 AE patients (33 antibody-positive, 27 antibody-negative) diagnosed at Zhongshan Hospital of Xiamen University between January 1, 2016, and March 1, 2024 was conducted. Disease severity and treatment response were assessed using the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) and the Clinical Assessment Scale for Autoimmune Encephalitis (CASE).ResultsAntibody-positive AE patients more frequently presented with multiple symptoms (≥4 symptoms: 39.4% vs. 14.8%, p = 0.036). They demonstrated significantly elevated serum IgG concentrations (p = 0.010) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leukocyte counts (p = 0.014). Conversely, antibody-negative AE patients presented with higher CSF total protein levels (p = 0.025) and albumin quotients (p = 0.018), indicative of more severe blood–brain barrier disruption. Antibody-positive AE patients more frequently received combination first-line immunotherapy (75.8% vs. 48.1%, p = 0.027) and exhibited superior treatment outcomes (90.9% vs. 70%, p = 0.022). Among critically ill patients (peak mRS score: 4–5), improvement in CASE scores was markedly greater in the antibody-positive cohort (median: 4.50 vs. 1.00, p = 0.024).ConclusionAntibody-positive AE patients manifested a more diverse symptom spectrum, elevated serum IgG concentrations and CSF leukocyte counts, and superior responses to immunotherapy. In contrast, antibody-negative AE patients demonstrated more severe blood–brain barrier dysfunction, as evidenced by higher CSF total protein concentrations and albumin quotients.

The impact of cadmium (Cd) toxicity on fish liver injury has received much attention in recent years. Currently, autophagy, apoptosis and endoplasmic reticulum stress were reported in Cd exposed fish liver, and if there are other mechanisms (such as ferroptosis) and relevant signaling pathways involved in fish remains unknown. An experiment was conducted to investigate Cd toxicity in Channa argus (Cantor, 1842) exposed to 0, 1.0, and 2.0 mg Cd/L of water for 96 h. Cd disrupted the structure of mitochondria in the liver. Besides, Cd induced ferroptosis by significantly increasing the level of Fe2+, ROS, MDA and significantly decreasing the level of Ferritin, GSH, GSH-Px, GPX4, GST and SOD (p < 0.05 in all cases). In addition, the mRNA expression of ferroptosis related genes, gpx4 and slc7a11, were significantly downregulated by Cd. Moreover, Cd exposure significantly inhibited the Nrf2/Keap1 signaling pathway, one of the pathways involved in ferroptosis, by upregulating the mRNA levels of keap1a and keap1b, and downregulating the mRNA levels of nrf2 and its target genes (ho-1, nqo1 and cat). Cd exposure also caused extensive accumulation of vacuoles and lipid droplets in liver, as well as an increase in triglyceride content. Cd significantly affected lipid metabolism related enzyme activity and gene expression, which were also regulated by Nrf2/Keap1 signaling pathway. In summary, these results indicate that ferroptosis is a mechanism in waterborne Cd exposed fish liver injury via the Nrf2/Keap1 signaling pathway and the Cd induced hepatic steatosis is also modulated by Nrf2/Keap1 pathway at the whole-body level in fish. These findings provide new insights into the fish liver injury and molecular basis of Cd toxicity.

The fishery-photovoltaic complementary industry is an emerging industrial model in China that integrates aquaculture with the solar industry. This innovative model involves conducting aquaculture activities while installing photovoltaic modules on the water surface to harness solar energy for electricity generation. However, despite its rapid growth in China, this model lacks substantial scientific data support across various domains. Therefore, based on an analysis of relevant research literature, this study reviews the current development status, environmental and economic effects, as well as challenges faced by the fishery-photovoltaic complementary industry in China. The aim is to provide scientific references for promoting sustainable development within this sector. The findings reveal that existing fishery-photovoltaic complementary industry projects are primarily concentrated in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and Pearl River Basin. The geographical distribution of these projects is predominantly influenced by local aquaculture areas and available solar energy resources, with a greater impact observed from the former rather than the latter. During summer months when water is shaded by photovoltaic panels, a slight decrease in the average water quality parameters across cases was observed, such as a decrease of 0.2 units in pH, a decrease of 1.06 °C in water temperature, a decrease in dissolved oxygen levels of 0.8 mg/L, inorganic nitrogen content and total phosphorus concentration dropped by 0.08 mg/L and 0.02 mg/L respectively. Conversely, there is a moderate increase noted in total nitrogen and ammonia nitrogen levels. The conclusion of the effect on phytoplankton biomass is not uniform, but it will certainly reduce zooplankton biomass. The impact on the species diversity of the zooplankton community was minimal, and its direction, whether positive or negative, varied depending on the specific aquatic ecosystem. A certain degree of shade is advantageous for the cultivation of shade-loving fish. Through the strategic deployment of photovoltaic panels and the implementation of scientific stocking practices, it is possible to achieve sustained levels of fisheries production. This model also can reduce an average of 978.6 tons of CO2 emissions per megawatt per year through energy production, thus achieving the combined goals of energy conservation and emissions reduction, and ensuring the profitability of power generation. Additionally, compared with the land utilization area of 3.66 hm2 per megawatt of traditional ground-mounted photovoltaics, fishery-photovoltaic complementary only requires 1.64 hm2, which can significantly save land resources by utilizing water surfaces, which mitigates the conflict between land use for agriculture and renewable energy installations. At the same time, research also pointed out that the existence of fishery-photovoltaic complementary will inevitably have some negative impacts on bird communities. Economic analyses indicate that while initial infrastructure costs and long payback periods pose challenges, the overall economic feasibility is promising, especially with governmental support and technological advancements. However, several challenges need to be addressed for further development: these include difficulties associated with infrastructure construction and initial costs, long payback periods; insufficient experience and technical support; as well as a lack of research on ecological and environmental impacts - particularly an urgent need for comprehensive life cycle assessments encompassing both environmental and economic aspects. Future research should focus on life cycle assessments, improved PV technology integration, and optimized aquaculture practices.

Background Symptom networks offer a theoretical basis for developing personalised and precise symptom management strategies. However, symptom networks in lymphoma patients during chemotherapy have been rarely reported. This study intends to establish contemporaneous symptom networks in lymphoma patients during chemotherapy and explore the centrality indices and density in these symptom networks.Methods and analysis This is a single-centre prospective cross-sectional study. A total of 315 lymphoma patients admitted to the Lymphoma Department of Shanxi Bethune Hospital since 1 June 2024 will be selected as the study subjects. The patient-reported outcome measures of General Data Questionnaire and Lymphoma Symptom Assessment Scale will be assessed. R package will be used to construct a contemporaneous symptom network, explore the relationship between core and analysed symptoms and analyse the predictive role of network density on patient prognosis.Ethics and dissemination This study adheres to the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki and relevant ethical guidelines. Ethical approval has been obtained from Shanxi Bethune Hospital Ethics Committee (approval number: YXLL-2023-186). The final outcomes will be published in a peer-reviewed journal and disseminated through a conference.

BackgroundObservational researches have suggested a connection between iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and an increased likelihood of ischemic stroke (IS), yet establishing causality is challenging owing to the inherent limitations of such studies, including their vulnerability to confounding factors and the potential for reverse causation. This study employs a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach to assess the causal linkage between IDA and IS and its subtypes.MethodsIdentifiable single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with significant links to either IDA or IS and its subtypes were employed as instrumental variables (IVs). The relationship between IDA and any IS, small vessel stroke (SVS), cardioembolic stroke (CES), and large artery stroke (LAS), was quantified using the inverse variance weighted (IVW) method. Complementary analyses utilizing MR-Egger and weighted median methods further supplemented the IVW findings. Moreover, the leave-one-out analysis, MR-Egger intercept test, MR-PRESSO global test, and Cochrane’s Q test were conducted for sensitivity analyses.ResultsThis study revealed no correlation between IDA and any IS (IVW method: OR [95% CI] = 0.977 [0.863–1.106]; p = 0.716), LAS (OR [95% CI] = 1.158 [0.771–1.740]; p = 0.479), CES (OR [95% CI] = 1.065 [0.882–1.285]; p = 0.512), or SVS (OR [95% CI] = 1.138 [0.865–1.498]; p = 0.357). Conducting a reverse MR analysis, it was determined that there is no causal connection between any IS, LAS, CES, SVS, and IDA (all p > 0.05). Sensitivity analysis indicated that heterogeneity was not significant and no evidence of horizontal pleiotropy was detected.ConclusionThis MR study suggested no causal effect of IDA on IS, LAS, CES, and SVS. Through reverse MR analyses, it was determined that IS and its subtypes did not exert a causal impact on IDA.

BackgroundObservational research has highlighted a potential relationship between rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and neurodegenerative diseases (NDs). However, the confirmation of a causal connection is impeded by the inherent limitations of such studies, including vulnerability to confounding factors and the possibility of reverse causality. This study employs a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach to assess the causal impact of RA on three NDs, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).MethodsWe aggregated data from genome-wide association studies (GWASs) targeting RA or NDs within populations of European descent. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with robust associations to RA were identified as instrumental variables (IVs). To estimate the association between RA and AD, PD, and ALS, we utilized the inverse variance weighted (IVW) method in our univariable MR (UVMR) analysis. Validation of the IVW results ensued through supplementary analyses using MR-Egger and weighted median methods. The multivariable MR (MVMR) analysis was conducted, adjusting for body mass index (BMI), alcohol drinking, and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).ResultsThe UVMR analysis, based on the IVW method, revealed a significantly positive causal association between RA and late-onset (LO) AD (OR [95% CI] = 1.084 [1.020–1.153]; p = 9.980 × 10−3), while suggesting a possible inverse relationship with PD (OR [95% CI] = 0.727 [0.563–0.938]; p = 0.014). Our study did not detect any causal connections between RA and early-onset (EO) AD, atypical or mixed (AM) AD, and ALS (all p > 0.05). The MVMR analysis results indicated that after adjusting for alcohol drinking, RA remains a risk factor for LOAD (OR [95% CI] = 1.094 [1.024–1.169]; p = 0.008). However, MVMR analysis revealed no causal connections between RA and PD after adjustments for BMI, alcohol drinking, or T2DM (all p > 0.05). Sensitivity analyses showed no evidence of heterogeneity and horizontal pleiotropy.ConclusionsThis research provides genetic evidence indicating that RA potentially causes an increased risk of developing LOAD and PD. Such a revelation underscores the importance for individuals suffering from RA to be vigilant about the potential emergence of LOAD and PD. Ongoing monitoring and prompt detection are essential for successfully managing and intervening in this possible risk.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a clinicopathologic syndrome characterized by excessive fat deposition in hepatocytes and a major cause of end-stage liver disease. Autophagy is a metabolic pathway responsible for degrading cytoplasmic products and damaged organelles, playing a pivotal role in maintaining the homeostasis and functionality of hepatocytes. Recent studies have shown that pharmacological intervention to activate or restore autophagy provides benefits for liver function recovery by promoting the clearance of lipid droplets (LDs) in hepatocytes, decreasing the production of pro-inflammatory factors, and inhibiting activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), thus improving liver fibrosis and slowing down the progression of NAFLD. This article summarizes the physiological process of autophagy, elucidates the close relationship between NAFLD and autophagy, and discusses the effects of drugs on autophagy and signaling pathways from the perspectives of hepatocytes, kupffer cells (KCs), and HSCs to provide assistance in the clinical management of NAFLD.

Background and aimMetabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) has gradually become one of the main health concerns regarding liver diseases. Postmenopausal women represent a high-risk group for MAFLD; therefore, it is of great importance to identify and intervene with patients at risk at an early stage. This study established a predictive nomogram model of MAFLD in postmenopausal women and to enhance the clinical utility of the new model, the researchers limited variables to simple clinical and laboratory indicators that are readily obtainable.MethodsData of 942 postmenopausal women from January 2023 to October 2023 were retrospectively collected and divided into two groups according to the collection time: the training group (676 cases) and the validation group (226 cases). Significant indicators independently related to MAFLD were identified through univariate logistic regression and stepwise regression, and the MAFLD prediction nomogram was established. The C-index and calibration curve were used to quantify the nomogram performance, and the model was evaluated by measuring the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), calibration curve, and decision curve analysis (DCA).ResultsOf 37 variables, 11 predictors were identified, including occupation (worker), body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, number of abortions, anxiety, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, hyperuricemia, and diet (meat and processed meat). The C-index of the training group predicting the related risk factors was 0.827 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.794–0.860). The C-index of the validation group was 0.787 (95% CI 0.728–0.846). Calibration curves 1 and 2 (BS1000 times) were close to the diagonal, showing a good agreement between the predicted probability and the actual incidence in the two groups. The AUC of the training group was 0.827, the sensitivity was 0.784, and the specificity was 0.735. The AUC of the validation group was 0.787, the sensitivity was 0.674, and the specificity was 0.772. The DCA curve showed that the nomogram had a good net benefit in predicting MAFLD in postmenopausal women.ConclusionsA predictive nomogram for MAFLD in postmenopausal women was established and verified, which can assist clinicians in evaluating the risk of MAFLD at an early stage.

This study used Litopenaeus vannamei to compare the muscle nutritional quality and volatile flavor compounds of animals raised in the photovoltaic fishery culture model (PM) and the common pond breeding model (CM). Amino acids, fatty acids, and volatile flavor substances were identified and analyzed using an automatic amino acid analyzer and headspace solid phase microextraction(HS-SPME) combined with GC/MS. There were no significant differences between the two culture models in terms of general nutrients, mineral contents, and amino acid compositions in the muscles of L. vannamei. In the PM group, the proportion of flavor amino acids in total amino acids was higher. Based on the amino acid score (AAS) and chemical score (CS), it was found that methionine and cystine were the first limiting amino acids in the muscle samples. The essential amino acid index (EAAI) value was approximately 77 for both models, indicating high-quality proteins. The muscles contained nine types of fatty acids, with the PM group showing significantly higher levels of both monounsaturated and total fatty acids. A total of 23 volatile flavor compounds were identified in both models. The contents of 1-nonanal, n-tridecane, and alpha-terpineol were higher when cultured in the PM. Conversely, the contents of hexanal, 2-ethylhexanol, and dipentene were lower in the PM group. The photovoltaic fishery culture model has the potential to enhance income through photovoltaic power generation. In addition, this study found that the fatty acid composition of L. vannamei was improved in the PM, without compromising muscle composition or flavor. These results provide a theoretical basis for evaluating the meat quality of L. vannamei under different culture models and offer data to support and guide the promotion of the PM.

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), closely linked to environmental factors, poses a significant public health challenge. This study, based on 529 triple-repeated measures from key national environmental pollution area and multiple gene-related public databases, employs various epidemiological and bioinformatics models to assess the impact of combined heavy metal exposure (Chromium [Cr], Cadmium [Cd], and Lead [Pb]) on early renal injury and CKD in the elderly. Introducing the novel Enviro-Target Mendelian Randomization method, our research explores the causal relationship between metals and CKD. The findings indicate a positive correlation between increased levels of metal and renal injury, with combined exposure caused renal damage more significantly than individual exposure. The study reveals that metals primarily influence CKD development through oxidative stress and metal ion resistance pathways, focusing on three related genes (SOD2, MPO, NQO1) and a transcription factor (NFE2L2). Metals were found to regulate oxidative stress levels in the body by increasing the expression of SOD2, MPO, NQO1, and decreasing NFE2L2, leading to CKD onset. Our research establishes a new causal inference framework linking environmental pollutants-pathways-genes-CKD, assessing the impact and mechanisms of metal exposure on CKD. Future studies with more extensive in vitro evidence and larger population are needed to validate.

Abstract Systemic immune monitoring is a crucial clinical tool for disease early diagnosis, prognosis and treatment planning by quantitative analysis of immune cells. However, conventional immune monitoring using flow cytometry faces huge challenges in large-scale sample testing, especially in mass health screenings, because of time-consuming, technical-sensitive and high-cost features. However, the lack of high-performance detection platforms hinders the development of high-throughput immune monitoring technology. To address this bottleneck, we constructed a generally applicable DNA framework signal amplification platform (DSAP) based on post-systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment and DNA tetrahedral framework-structured probe design to achieve high-sensitive detection for diverse immune cells, including CD4+, CD8+ T-lymphocytes, and monocytes (down to 1/100 μl). Based on this advanced detection platform, we present a novel high-throughput immune-cell phenotyping system, DSAP, achieving 30-min one-step immune-cell phenotyping without cell washing and subset analysis and showing comparable accuracy with flow cytometry while significantly reducing detection time and cost. As a proof-of-concept, DSAP demonstrates excellent diagnostic accuracy in immunodeficiency staging for 107 HIV patients (AUC > 0.97) within 30 min, which can be applied in HIV infection monitoring and screening. Therefore, we initially introduced promising DSAP to achieve high-throughput immune monitoring and open robust routes for point-of-care device development.

Abstract Inflammation-associated diseases encompass a range of infectious diseases and non-infectious inflammatory diseases, which continuously pose one of the most serious threats to human health, attributed to factors such as the emergence of new pathogens, increasing drug resistance, changes in living environments and lifestyles, and the aging population. Despite rapid advancements in mechanistic research and drug development for these diseases, current treatments often have limited efficacy and notable side effects, necessitating the development of more effective and targeted anti-inflammatory therapies. In recent years, the rapid development of nanotechnology has provided crucial technological support for the prevention, treatment, and detection of inflammation-associated diseases. Various types of nanoparticles (NPs) play significant roles, serving as vaccine vehicles to enhance immunogenicity and as drug carriers to improve targeting and bioavailability. NPs can also directly combat pathogens and inflammation. In addition, nanotechnology has facilitated the development of biosensors for pathogen detection and imaging techniques for inflammatory diseases. This review categorizes and characterizes different types of NPs, summarizes their applications in the prevention, treatment, and detection of infectious and inflammatory diseases. It also discusses the challenges associated with clinical translation in this field and explores the latest developments and prospects. In conclusion, nanotechnology opens up new possibilities for the comprehensive management of infectious and inflammatory diseases.

Background: The Klebsiella oxytoca complex is an opportunistic pathogen that has been recently identified as an actual complex. However, the characteristics of each species remain largely unknown. We aimed to study the clinical prevalence, antimicrobial profiles, genetic differences, and interaction with the host of each species of this complex. Methods: One hundred and three clinical isolates of the K. oxytoca complex were collected from 33 hospitals belonging to 19 areas in China from 2020 to 2021. Species were identified using whole genome sequencing based on average nucleotide identity. Clinical infection characteristics of the species were analyzed. Comparative genomics and pan-genome analyses were performed on these isolates and an augmented dataset, including 622 assemblies from the National Center for Biotechnology Information. In vitro assays evaluating the adhesion ability of human respiratory epithelial cells and survivability against macrophages were performed on randomly selected isolates. Results: Klebsiella michiganensis (46.6%, 48/103) and K. oxytoca (35.92%, 37/103) were the major species of the complex causing human infections. K. michiganensis had a higher genomic diversity and larger pan-genome size than did K. oxytoca. K. michiganensis isolates with blaoxy-5 had a higher resistance rate to various antibiotics, antimicrobial gene carriage rate, adhesion ability to human respiratory epithelial cells, and survival rate against macrophages than isolates of other species. Conclusion: Our study revealed the genetic diversity of K. michiganensis and firstly identified the highly antimicrobial-resistant profile of K. michiganensis carrying blaoxy-5.

The photonics-assisted millimeter-wave (MMW) communication technology is attractive to facilitate the MMW application in the upcoming B5G and 6G networks. However, its generated MMW signal by optical heterodyne detection usually suffers from serious laser phase noise, which will severely deteriorate the system performance. In this paper, based on a single dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator and a single-end photodetector, we first present a simple and spectrally efficient hybrid fiber-wireless double-sideband transmission by employing an overlapping frequency multiplexing scheme. That is, two independent wireless signals with an identical carrier frequency can be simultaneously transmitted in the hybrid fiber-wireless links. To recover the above two overlapped signals, and cancel the concomitant laser phase noise at the same time, a novel digital signal processing method for carrier extraction and signal recovery is further proposed. A proof-of-concept experiment using two independent 3-GBd quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signals at W band (92.5 GHz) is performed. After up to 80-km fiber and 3-m wireless transmission, the two QPSK signals can be successfully demodulated, without using the traditional carrier phase estimation algorithm. The proposed scheme not only can double the spectral efficiency of conventional double sideband transmission scheme, but also is immune to its power fading phenomenon induced by chromatic dispersion and robust to the laser phase noise resulting from two free-running lasers in the photonics-assisted MMW communication link.

In power systems, failures of vulnerable lines can trigger large-scale cascading failures, and vulnerability assessment is dedicated to locating these lines and reducing the risks of such failures. Based on a structure and attribute network embedding (SANE) algorithm, a novel quantitative vulnerability analysis method is proposed to identify vulnerable lines in this research. First, a two-layered random walk network with topological and electrical properties of transmission lines is established. Subsequently, based on the weighted degree of nodes in the two-layered network, the inter-layer and intra-layer walking transition probabilities are developed to obtain walk sequences. Then, a Word2Vec algorithm is applied to obtain low-dimension vectors representing transmission lines, according to obtained walk sequences for calculating the vulnerability index of transmissions lines. Finally, the proposed method is compared with three widely used methods in two test systems. Results show the network embedding based method is superior to those comparison methods and can provide guidance for identifying vulnerable lines.

Significane The analysis of source-to-sink system is a comprehensive study of tectonic geology, sedimentology, and sequence stratigraphy. Because of its integral, dynamic, and semiquantitative-quantitative characteristics, it has attracted widespread attention. Progress This review first introduces the key issues of the deep-time source-to-sink systems (pre-Quaternary systems), which include the quantitative characterization of sediment mass balance and the control of the transport process on the sediment. Due to the lack of stratigraphic records and the difficulty in obtaining parameters, the research is still challenging.Second, it reviews the quantitation methods of deep-time source-to-sink systems that can be classified into three categories, namely, geochronology, uniformitarianism, and sedimentology. By obtaining information such as geomorphological parameters, hydraulic parameters, erosion rates, and sediment flux, various methods establish the quantitative relationships between "sources" and "sinks" and then rebuild the sedimentary basin infilling history. This article introduces the principles and related parameters of different methods and then compares the advantages and limitations to provide a reference for future research. It is believed that geochronology is widely used, and the core lies in provenance analysis. The key to uniformitarianism is the analogy of geological background and the selection of geological parameters. The sedimentology is controlled by multiple variables, and the tectonic-climate background and research scale need to be considered comprehensively. Conclusions and Prospects Finally, this review states the development of quantitative analysis of deep-time source-to-sink systems. Under the guidance of the important idea of "the present is the key to the past", the research needs to focus on the provenance systems, sediment routing systems, sediment dispersal, and redistributive process, and coupling relationship between various parameters. Research also needs to pay attention to quantitative analysis at multiple timescales and multidisciplinary dynamic analysis. Compared with continental margin source-to-sink systems, continental lacustrine source-to-sink system patterns and prediction models need to be further improved.

Abstract Background Rye (Secale cereale), one of the drought and cold-tolerant crops, is an important component of the Triticae Dumortier family of Gramineae plants. Basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH), an important family of transcription factors, has played pivotal roles in regulating numerous intriguing biological processes in plant development and abiotic stress responses. However, no systemic analysis of the bHLH transcription factor family has yet been reported in rye. Results In this study, 220 bHLH genes in S. cereale (ScbHLHs) were identified and named based on the chromosomal location. The evolutionary relationships, classifications, gene structures, motif compositions, chromosome localization, and gene replication events in these ScbHLH genes are systematically analyzed. These 220 ScbHLH members are divided into 21 subfamilies and one unclassified gene. Throughout evolution, the subfamilies 5, 9, and 18 may have experienced stronger expansion. The segmental duplications may have contributed significantly to the expansion of the bHLH family. To systematically analyze the evolutionary relationships of the bHLH family in different plants, we constructed six comparative genomic maps of homologous genes between rye and different representative monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous plants. Finally, the gene expression response characteristics of 22 ScbHLH genes in various biological processes and stress responses were analyzed. Some candidate genes, such as ScbHLH11, ScbHLH48, and ScbHLH172, related to tissue developments and environmental stresses were screened. Conclusions The results indicate that these ScbHLH genes exhibit characteristic expression in different tissues, grain development stages, and stress treatments. These findings provided a basis for a comprehensive understanding of the bHLH family in rye.

Micro-newton thrusters are widely utilized in the field of astronautics. Typically, the precision of micro-newton thrust measurement fundamentally depends on the background noise level. In this research, we introduce the Multichannel Variational Mode Decomposition Input Deep Residual Shrinkage Network (MV-DRSN) to identify the effective signals merged in the background noise. Experimental studies in vacuum were conducted to investigate the effect of noise reduction on MV-DRSN. It is shown that a steady-state signal with 0.1 μN as the minimum change unit can be recovered from the noises with an amplitude of 0.8 μN with an accuracy of 96.7% using MV-DRSN. In addition, the superiority of MV-DRSN over conventional ResNet has been validated, and its effectiveness in practical scenarios is verified. The proposed method has potential for noise reduction of steady-state sensor signals.

IntroductionGlobal warming has led to increased environmental stresses on plants, notably drought. This affects plant distribution and species adaptability, with some medicinal plants showing enhanced drought tolerance and increased medicinal components. In this pioneering study, we delve into the intricate tapestry of Arnebia guttata, a medicinal plant renowned for its resilience in arid environments. By fusing a rich historical narrative with cutting-edge analytical methodologies, this research endeavors to demystify the plant’s intricate response to drought stress, illuminating its profound implications for medicinal valorization.MethodsThe methodology includes a comprehensive textual research and resource investigation of A. guttata, regionalization studies, field sample distribution analysis, transcriptome and metabolome profiling, rhizosphere soil microbiome analysis, and drought stress experiments. Advanced computational tools like ArcGIS, MaxEnt, and various bioinformatics software were utilized for data analysis and modeling.ResultsThe study identified significant genetic variations among A. guttata samples from different regions, correlating with environmental factors, particularly precipitation during the warmest quarter (BIO18). Metabolomic analysis revealed marked differences in metabolite profiles, including shikonin content, which is crucial for the plant’s medicinal properties. Soil microbial community analysis showed variations that could impact plant metabolism and stress response. Drought stress experiments demonstrated A. guttata’s resilience and its ability to modulate metabolic pathways to enhance drought tolerance.DiscussionThe findings underscore the complex interplay between genetic makeup, environmental factors, and microbial communities in shaping A. guttata’s adaptability and medicinal value. The study provides insights into how drought stress influences the synthesis of active compounds and suggests that moderate stress could enhance the plant’s medicinal properties. Predictive modeling indicates future suitable growth areas for A. guttata, aiding in resource management and conservation efforts. The research contributes to the sustainable development of medicinal resources and offers strategies for improving the cultivation of A. guttata.

Existing surgical guidewire endpoint localization methods in X‐ray images face challenges owing to their small size, simple appearance, nonrigid nature of objects, low signal‐to‐noise ratio of X‐ray images, and imbalance between the number of guidewire and background pixels, which lead to errors in surgical navigation. An eight‐neighborhood‐based method for increasing the localization accuracy of guidewire endpoint to improve the safety of interventional procedures is proposed herein. The proposed method includes two stages: 1) An improved U‐Net network is employed for segmenting the data of the guidewire to extract regions of interest containing guidewire endpoints with higher precision and to reduce interference from other anatomical structures and imaging artifacts. 2) The proposed method detects guidewire endpoints using the adjacent relationship between pixels in the eight‐neighborhood regions. This stage covers skeletonization extraction, removal of bifurcation points, and repair of fracture points. This study achieves mean pixel errors of 2.02 and 2.13 pixels in an in vivo rabbit and porcine X‐ray fluoroscopy images, outperforming ten classic heatmap and regression methods, achieving state‐of‐the‐art detection results. The proposed method can also be applied to detect other tiny surgical instruments such as stents and balloons, while preserving the flexibility of the guidewire bending angle.

Abstract Objective Hypoxia, which can considerably affect the tumor microenvironment, hinders the use of immunotherapy in bladder cancer (BLCA). Therefore, we aimed to identify reliable hypoxia‐related biomarkers to guide clinical immunotherapy in BLCA. Methods Using data downloaded from TCGA‐BLCA cohort, we determined BLCA subtypes which divide 408 samples into different subtypes. Tumor immune infiltration levels of two clusters were quantified using ssGSEA, MCPcounter, EPIC, ESTIMATE, and TIMER algorithms. Next, we constructed a hypoxia score based on the expression of hypoxia‐related genes. The IMvigor210 cohort and SubMap analysis were used to predict immunotherapeutic responses in patients with different hypoxia scores. Hub genes were screened using cytoscape, immunohistochemistry (IHC), and multispectral immunofluorescence were used to detect the spatial distribution of immune markers. Results Patients with BLCA were categorized into cluster1 (n = 227) and Cluster2 (n = 181). Immune infiltration and expression of immune markers were higher in Cluster1. Immune infiltration was also more obvious in the high‐hypoxia score group which related to a better predicted response to immunotherapy. IHC, and multispectral immunofluorescence confirmed the importance of TLR8 in immune infiltration and immune phenotype. Conclusions BLCA subtype can evaluate the infiltration of immune cells in the tumor microenvironment of different patients. Hypoxia score in this study could effectively predict immunotherapeutic responses in patients with BLCA. TLR8 may be a potential target for clinical immunotherapy.

Abstract Abiotic stresses are major factors constraining the growth, development and productivity of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), the most cultivated vegetable crop worldwide. Uridine diphosphate glycosyltransferases (UDPGTs or UGTs) are essential enzymes that utilize 5-uridine diphosphate as a glycosyl donor molecule to facilitate the catalysis of glycosylation reactions across diverse substrates, thereby playing a pivotal role in conferring abiotic stress tolerance. Currently, there is a limited understanding of the structure and functions of the UDPGT gene family in tomato. In this work, 106 members of the SlUDPGT gene family were identified through in silico analysis, besides, their protein sequence properties, phylogenetic relationships, gene structure, chromosomal distribution, cis-acting elements, tissue expression and hormone- and stress-induced expression were comprehensively investigated. The expression of representative SlUDPGTs under abiotic stress and exogenous hormone treatments, including salt, polyethylene glycol, methyl viologen, gibberellic acid, jasmonic acid, abscisic acid and brassinolide, was investigated through qRT‒PCR analysis. Numerous cis-acting elements linked to stress and hormone signaling were present in the promoter regions of SlUDPGTs. According to microarray data, most SlUDPGT genes were responsive to hormones and abiotic stresses, while certain SlUDPGTs were specifically differentially expressed under Botrytis cinerea and tomato spotted wilt virus infection. Additionally, diverse expression profiles of SlUDPGTs were observed in various tissues and developmental stages. Furthermore, CRISPR/Cas9-mediated knockout of SlUDPGT52 led to enhanced drought tolerance due to enhanced reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging. These findings lay the foundations for the future functional characterization of specific UDPGT gene family members, assisting the biotechnology-mediated improvement of tomato and other horticultural crops.

Abstract Background Effective pain management is closely related to nurses’ knowledge, attitudes and empathy regarding pain. Nursing educators and managers should understand the relationship between nurses’ pain management knowledge, attitudes and empathy level, and take targeted measures accordingly. Currently, there is limited study exploring the relationship between pain empathy and pain knowledge and attitudes among nurses in North China. Objectives The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of nurses’ pain management knowledge and attitudes and pain empathy, to analyze the factors influencing pain empathy, and to explore the relationship between these two variables. Design This study was a quantitative, descriptive-correlation design. Setting and participants The study population was registered nurses in North China, the sample included 177 registered nurses in North China. Methods Data were collected with the “General data questionnaire”, “Knowledge and attitudes survey regarding pain” (KASRP) and the “Empathy for pain scale” (EPS) via Wechat mini program “Questionnaire Star”. Results The 177 registered nurses completed the survey. The averege correct rate for KASRP was (51.94 ± 9.44)%, and none of the respondents achieved a percentage score of >80%. The mean score for pain empathy was (2.78 ± 0.78), the empathy reactions dimension was (2.99 ± 0.77), and the body and mind discomfort dimension was (2.71 ± 0.80). The results of multiple stepwise linear regression showed that whether they had received empathy training, whether they had greater trauma or severe pain and whether they had negative emotions were independent influencing factors for EPS scores. Introduction Insomnia stands as a frequent consequence of a cerebrovascular event, afflicting a substantial fraction of those who endure the aftermath of stroke. The ramifications of insomnia following a stroke can further exacerbate cognitive and behavioural anomalies while hindering the process of neurological convalescence. While several randomised controlled trials (RCTs) have scrutinised the effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on poststroke insomnia, the advantages and drawbacks persist in a state of ambiguity. We advocate for a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised clinical trials to comprehensively evaluate the effectiveness and safety of HBOT in the context of poststroke insomnia.Methods and analysis A systematic search will be conducted from nine major databases (PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, VIP Information Database, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Biomedical Literature Database and Wanfang Database, Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro)) for HBOT for poststroke insomnia of RCTs. The search procedures will adhere to a rigorous approach, commencing from the inception date of each database and continuing until 1 November 2023, with inquiries conducted exclusively in English and Chinese. The primary outcome will focus on the alteration in the quality of sleep while secondary outcomes will encompass the evaluation of adverse events and the rate of reoccurrence. The process of selecting studies, extracting data and evaluating the quality of research will be carried out independently by two reviewers. The quality of the included literature will be assessed using the tools of the Cochrane Collaboration. Meta-analysis will be performed by using RevMan V.5.4 and STATA V.16.0.b software. Finally, the quality of evidence will be assessed using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation method.Ethics and dissemination As all data are derived from published investigations via databases without direct patient contact, ethical approval is obviated in this study. The scientific studies will be published in professional academic publications.PROSPERO registration number CRD42023468442.

ObjectiveSubthreshold depression (StD)/subsyndromal depression refers to a threatening precursor to depression. Aerobic exercise is a promising self-supportive adjunctive intervention and an effective measure for StD. Our study utilizes regional homogeneity (ReHo) to investigate the impact of aerobic exercise on resting-state brain function.MethodsA total of 78 subjects, aged between 18 and 48 years, (StD group, n = 44; healthy control (HC) group, n = 34) engaged in moderate-intensity aerobic exercise 3–4 times per week for 8 weeks. Resting-state brain function and structural images were acquired before and after the exercise intervention. The ReHo method was employed to analyze abnormal changes in regional brain function, and a correlation analysis was performed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) scores.ResultsThe principal observation reveals synchronous abnormalities in the right anterior cingulate gyrus of the brain in StD subjects compared to HCs at baseline, with these differences dissipating after the implementation of aerobic exercise. After completing the aerobic exercise program, the StD group exhibited a difference in the right middle cingulate gyrus, while the left supplementary motor area (SMA) was altered in the HC group.ConclusionDisparities in neural synchronization are evident between HCs and StD subjects, and the implementation of aerobic exercise intervention can effectively mitigate these distinctions, leading to a significant reduction in depressive symptoms among StD subjects. The primary mechanism of StD symptoms may involve the inhibition of the anterior cingulate gyrus, while the effects of aerobic exercise may be related to the modulation of neural synchronization of emotional reflexes. The discovery of these fMRI evidence findings may offer novel strategies for early detection and intervention in cases of StD.

BackgroundInsomnia has emerged as a major public health issue jeopardizing human wellbeing. Furthermore, insomnia and angina arise concomitantly and exert reciprocal effects. Multiple studies suggest that perimenopausal females are more prone to experiencing both angina and insomnia, consequently substantially compromising their quality of life.Credible evidence suggests that acupuncture exerts a beneficial impact in alleviating insomnia. Nevertheless, the exhaustive investigation into the potential of acupuncture for mitigating insomnia co-occurring with stable angina in perimenopausal females remains a realm yet to be traversed in the realm of randomized controlled trials. Hence, the primary intent of this research protocol was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety profile of acupuncture when administered to perimenopausal subjects grappling with concomitant conditions of stable angina and insomnia.MethodsThis study entails a single-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. A total of 110 patients exhibiting insomnia concomitant with stable angina in the perimenopausal period will be enlisted and randomized to either acupuncture or sham acupuncture. Participants in both arms will undergo 30-minute sessions thrice weekly over a 12-week intervention period, with a 12-week maximum follow-up. The primary outcome measure is the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI). Secondary outcomes encompass the Health-Related Quality of Life Questionnaire (SF-36), Dosage of sleeping pills, SAP-associated evaluations, including C-reactive protein (CRP), lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2), cardiac fatty acid-binding protein levels (C-FABP), and the Seattle Angina Questionnaire (SAQ). Additionally, the study includes assessments using the Hamilton Depression Inventory (HAMD) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7). Primary and secondary outcomes will be evaluated at baseline, 4 weeks, 8 weeks, 12 weeks (upon completion of the intervention), and at an additional 12-week follow-up. Any adverse events will be rigorously classified and characterized with respect to time of onset and abatement, therapeutic interventions implemented, impact on the primary morbidity, and regression.DiscussionThe current study is poised to furnish pivotal clinical data on the utility of acupuncture for stable angina with concomitant insomnia in perimenopausal women, with the findings to be propagated through academic conferences and peer-reviewed publications.Clinical trial registrationThai Clinical Trials Registry: TCTR20221121001. The municipal pipe system is a crucial component in the water supply and drainage infrastructure of a city and acts as its lifeline. However, over time, the municipal pipe network undergoes corrosion because of continuous use even after its service life. Corrosion can result in significant water loss and environmental pollution and is a substantial threat to the overall functionality of the water supply and drainage system. In this study, a pipeline piezoelectric generator (PPG) is used to harness the kinetic energy from water flow. The PPG is designed to convert this flow energy into mechanical vibrations through a piezoelectric cantilever beam. In addition, the piezoelectric effect transforms mechanical vibrations into electrical energy. A rectifier circuit converts an alternating current into a direct current to ensure a stable power supply. Moreover, the principles of cathodic protection are used to thwart any further electrochemical corrosion of the inner wall metal of the water pipes. This innovative approach safeguards the metal pipe network from deteriorating effects over time and facilitates self-adaptive protection.

Inter-basin water diversion projects have led to accelerated colonization of aquatic organisms, including the freshwater golden mussel (Limnoperna fortunei), exacerbating global biofouling concerns. While the influence of environmental factors on the mussel's invasion and biofouling impact has been studied, quantitative correlations and underlying mechanisms remain unclear, particularly in large-scale inter-basin water diversion projects with diverse hydrodynamic and environmental conditions. Here, we examine the comprehensive impact of environmental variables on the establishment risk of the golden mussel in China's 1432-km-long Middle Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project. Logistic regression and multiclass classification models were used to investigate the environmental influence on the occurrence probability and reproductive density of the golden mussel. Total nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, water temperature, pH, and velocity were identified as crucial environmental variables affecting the biofouling risk in the project. Logistic regression analysis revealed a negative correlation between the occurrence probability of all larval stages and levels of total nitrogen and ammonia nitrogen. The multiclass classification model showed that elevated levels of total nitrogen hindered mussel reproduction, while optimal water temperature enhanced their reproductive capacity. Appropriate velocity and pH levels were crucial in maintaining moderate larval density. This research presents a quantitative analytical framework for assessing establishment risks associated with invasive mussels, and the framework is expected to enhance invasion management and mitigate biofouling issues in water diversion projects worldwide.

Abstract Background Metabolic dysfunction associated with fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is often correlated with obesity and hyperuricemia. The present study aimed to determine the association between serum uric acid (SUA) and central fat distribution in patients with MAFLD. Methods A total of 485 patients were classified into the following groups: (1) controls without MAFLD and hyperuricemia (HUA), (2) MAFLD with normal SUA, and (3) MAFLD with HUA. BackgroundOccupational exposure to lead, cadmium, or arsenic is a potential risk factor for blood pressure elevation. Current studies mainly focus on the relationship between a single metal and blood pressure. However, mixed metal exposure often exists in the actual working environment, and the interactive effects of polymetallic interactions on blood pressure and the dose-effect relationship remain unclear yet. ObjectiveTo explore the influence proportion of occupational exposure to lead, cadmium, or arsenic on blood pressure and their interactive effects. MethodsFrom January to December 2021, workers from a smelter in southern China were selected. Demographic characteristics, height, weight, and blood pressure of workers were collected through questionnaire and physical examination. At the same time, their urine samples were collected and the levels of urinary lead, urinary cadmium, and urinary arsenic were detected by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and corrected by urinary creatinine (Cr). Linear regression and logistic regression were used to analyze the relationship between urinary lead, cadmium, and arsenic and blood pressure. Weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression was applied to evaluate the dose-effect relationship between urinary lead, cadmium, and arsenic exposures and blood pressure and the effect weight of each metal on blood pressure. Generalized linear regression and additive/multiplicative scaling were used to identify interactive effects of the three metals on blood pressure. ResultsA total of 1075 workers were included in this study, with a mean age of (44.68±5.11) years and mean working seniority of (24.66±5.23) years. There were 891 males (88.9%) and 184 were females (17.1%); 24.7% workers were drinkers and 45.7% workers were smokers; 302 workers (28.1%) reported hypertension and 37 of them were taking antihypertensive drugs. The P50 (P25, P75) levels of urinary lead, urinary cadmium, and urinary arsenic were 6.11 (3.71, 11.08), 3.88 (2.68, 5.44), and 26.04 (19.99, 35.11) μg·g−1, respectively. After adjusting for gender, age, working seniority, body mass index, smoking, drinking, and the usage of antihypertensive drugs, systolic and diastolic blood pressure increased by 0.772 and 0.418 mmHg respectively for 10% increase in lead, cadmium, and arsenic mixed exposure. Urinary cadmium, among the three single exposures, had the greatest effect on systolic and diastolic blood pressure, weight (w)=0.523 and 0.551 respectively. The interaction of urinary lead and urinary cadmium was positively correlated with the occurrence of hypertension, multiplicative interaction OR (ORint)=1.88 (95%CI: 1.09, 3.63), attributable proportion due to interaction (AP)=1.19 (95%CI: 0.40, 8.18). ConclusionThis study shows that mixed exposure to lead, cadmium, and arsenic has a positive relationship with blood pressure, in which cadmium plays a major role. Co-exposure to lead and cadmium has a positive interactive effect on hypertension development and systolic blood pressure elevation.

Abstract Background The studies of the effect of diabetes on the stiffness of Achilles tendon (AT) tissue remain inconclusive, we believe it is necessary to find a reliable method which can be used to detect the stiffness changes of the AT in the diabetic state. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness of sound touch elastography (STE) as a tool for detecting diabetic Achilles tendinopathy. Methods We conducted a retrospective review of 180 participants, consisting of 82 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and 98 healthy adults, who had undergone AT ultrasonography. Abstract The accuracy assessment of land cover data is of significant value to accurately monitor and objectively reproduce spatio-temporal dynamic changes to land surface landscapes. In this study, the interpretation and applicability of CCI, MCD, and CGLS long time-series land cover data products for China were evaluated via consistency analysis and a confusion matrix system using NLUD-C periodic products as reference data. The results showed that CGLS had the highest overall accuracy, Kappa coefficient, and area consistency in the continuous time-series evaluation, followed by MCD, whereas CCI had the worst performance. For the accuracy assessment of subdivided land cover types, the three products could accurately describe the distribution of forest land in China with a high recognition level, but their recognition ability for water body and construction land was poor. Among the other types, CCI could better identify cropland, MCD for grassland, and CGLS for unused land. Based on these evaluation results and characteristics of the data products, we developed suitable selection schemes for users with different requirements.

Abstract According to the 7th National Population Census, China is experiencing rapid growth of its ageing population, with large spatial disparities in the distribution of older folks in different regions. And yet, scant comparative research has been conducted on the two regions of Zhejiang and Jilin in particular, which differ considerably in economic development but witness nearly the same ageing trend. In response, this article compares Zhejiang, an advanced economic province, with Jilin, with its relatively low level of economic development, to explore the ageing issue and analyse the spatial correlation between older populations and socioeconomic factors. Using the spatiotemporal data analysis and geographical detector approaches, we obtain three significant findings: 1. both provinces have maintained steady rates of increase in ageing; 2. the older populations in Zhejiang and Jilin are mostly concentrated in the provincial capitals and nearby cities with reasonably established economies; and 3. the factors, including local fiscal expenditures, beds in hospitals and nursing homes, and coverage of social security, show a highly similar spatial pattern between older populations in Zhejiang and Jilin. The q-values of all the selected socioeconomic factors in Jilin showed a growth trend, indicating that the spatial correlation between these factors and ageing is strengthening year on year, that is, the resources gained from the socioeconomic development of Jilin have shifted steadily toward old-age services. As a consequence, a vicious circle of the slowing down of the economic growth drives away working forces and quickens the pace of population ageing, is present. From a policy perspective, Jilin province is strongly dependent on state-owned enterprises characterised by institutional rigidity, an inflexible market economy and an under-developed private sector, all of which are profoundly influenced by ageing. The consequence is large population outflows of young people. In contrast, the economy of Zhejiang province is partially decoupled from the ageing trend, so the gap in level of development between its counties has been narrowing. The policy implication here is that Zhejiang represents an active private economy that has coped successfully with ageing by attracting young migrants and developing new forms of development, such as the digital economy.

Currently, network real-time kinematic (NRTK) technology is one of the primary approaches used to achieve real-time dynamic high-precision positioning, and virtual reference station (VRS) technology, with its high accuracy and compatibility, has become the most important type of network RTK solution. The key to its successful implementation lies in correctly fixing integer ambiguities and extracting spatially correlated errors. This paper first introduces real-time data processing flow on the VRS server side. Subsequently, an improved ionosphere-weighted VRS approach is proposed based on single-differenced observations of GPS, GAL, and BDS. With the prerequisite of ensuring estimable integer properties of ambiguities, it directly estimates the single-differenced ionospheric delay and tropospheric delay between reference stations, reducing the double-differenced (DD) observation noise introduced by conventional models and accelerating the system initialization speed. Based on this, we provide an equation for generating virtual observations directly based on single-differenced atmospheric corrections without specifying the pivot satellite. This further simplifies the calculation process and enhances the efficiency of the solution. Using Australian CORS data for testing and analysis, and employing the approach proposed in this paper, the average initialization time on the server side was 40 epochs, and the average number of available satellites reached 23 (with an elevation greater than 20°). Two positioning modes, ‘Continuous’ (CONT) and ‘Instantaneous’ (INST), were employed to evaluate VRS user positioning accuracy, and the distance covered between the user and the master station was between 20 and 50 km. In CONT mode, the average positioning errors in the E/N/U directions were 0.67/0.82/1.98 cm, respectively, with an average success fixed rate of 98.76% (errors in all three directions were within 10 cm). In INST mode, the average positioning errors in the E/N/U directions were 1.29/1.29/2.13 cm, respectively, with an average success fixed rate of 89.56%. The experiments in this study demonstrate that the proposed approach facilitates efficient ambiguity resolution (AR) and atmospheric parameter extraction on the server side, thus enabling users to achieve centimeter-level positioning accuracy instantly.

Considering the characteristics of both quality and quantity losses in fresh produce as well as the existence of spot markets, optimal retailer ordering, pricing, and freshness-keeping decisions through the single ordering policy (firm ordering only or option ordering only) and the mixed ordering policy (firm ordering and option ordering simultaneously) are constructed based on option contracts and analyzed for the retailer under different ordering policies. The results show that there is a unique optimal pricing, ordering, and freshness-keeping decision under all three ordering policies, but there is no joint decision. The optimal freshness-keeping and retail price under the mixed ordering policy are lower than those under the option ordering only but higher than those under the firm ordering only. When only a single order can be placed, the retailer’s optimal ordering policy is determined by demand risk. When all three ordering policies are available, the optimal ordering policy for the retailer is the mixed ordering policy. A spot market will weaken the role of option contracts in mitigating supply chain risks, and the larger the risk, the more significant the role of the spot market.
