1. Insulating materials for realising carbon neutrality: Opportunities, remaining issues and challenges

Abstract

Abstract The 2050 carbon‐neutral vision spawns a novel energy structure revolution, and the construction of the future energy structure is based on equipment innovation. Insulating material, as the core of electrical power equipment and electrified transportation asset, faces unprecedented challenges and opportunities. The goal of carbon neutral and the urgent need for innovation in electric power equipment and electrification assets are first discussed. The engineering challenges constrained by the insulation system in future electric power equipment/devices and electrified transportation assets are investigated. Insulating materials, including intelligent insulating material, high thermal conductivity insulating material, high energy storage density insulating material, extreme environment resistant insulating material, and environmental‐friendly insulating material, are categorised with their scientific issues, opportunities and challenges under the goal of carbon neutrality being discussed. In the context of carbon neutrality, not only improves the understanding of the insulation problems from a macro level, that is, electrical power equipment and electrified transportation asset, but also offers opportunities, remaining issues and challenges from the insulating material level. It is hoped that this paper envisions the challenges regarding design and reliability of insulations in electrical equipment and electric vehicles in the context of policies towards carbon neutrality rules. The authors also hope that this paper can be helpful in future development and research of novel insulating materials, which promote the realisation of the carbon‐neutral vision.

2. Very High Resolution Images and Superpixel-Enhanced Deep Neural Forest Promote Urban Tree Canopy Detection

Abstract

Urban tree canopy (UTC) area is an important index for evaluating the urban ecological environment; the very high resolution (VHR) images are essential for improving urban tree canopy survey efficiency. However, the traditional image classification methods often show low robustness when extracting complex objects from VHR images, with insufficient feature learning, object edge blur and noise. Our objective was to develop a repeatable method—superpixel-enhanced deep neural forests (SDNF)—to detect the UTC distribution from VHR images. Eight data expansion methods was used to construct the UTC training sample sets, four sample size gradients were set to test the optimal sample size selection of SDNF method, and the best training times with the shortest model convergence and time-consumption was selected. The accuracy performance of SDNF was tested by three indexes: F1 score (F1), intersection over union (IoU) and overall accuracy (OA). To compare the detection accuracy of SDNF, the random forest (RF) was used to conduct a control experiment with synchronization. Compared with the RF model, SDNF always performed better in OA under the same training sample size. SDNF had more epoch times than RF, converged at the 200 and 160 epoch, respectively. When SDNF and RF are kept in a convergence state, the training accuracy is 95.16% and 83.16%, and the verification accuracy is 94.87% and 87.73%, respectively. The OA of SDNF improved 10.00%, reaching 89.00% compared with the RF model. This study proves the effectiveness of SDNF in UTC detection based on VHR images. It can provide a more accurate solution for UTC detection in urban environmental monitoring, urban forest resource survey, and national forest city assessment.

3. Efficient Hydrogen Generation From Hydrolysis of Sodium Borohydride in Seawater Catalyzed by Polyoxometalate Supported on Activated Carbon

Abstract

Phosphotungstic acid (HPW) as a polyoxometalate was selected as the active component of the catalyst. The activated carbon supported different percentage of HPW catalysts were prepared by impregnation and were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results showed that the HPW retained the original Keggin structure after being supported on activated carbon, the specific surface of the HPW/C was much bigger than that of pure HPW. The catalytic performance of HPW/C in the hydrogen generation reaction by hydrolysis of sodium borohydride in seawater and in deionized water were studied. 2.5 wt.% HPW/C showed the fastest hydrolysis reaction rate and the biggest volume of hydrogen generated. As for hydrolysis of sodium borohydride, catalytic effect of HPW/C was better in seawater than in distilled water. HPW dispersed on activated carbon is a real promising catalytic system for the development of hydrogen generation by hydrolysis of NaBH4 in seawater.

5. Visual Simulation Research on Growth Polymorphism of Chinese Fir Stand Based on Different Comprehensive Grade Models of Spatial Structure Parameters

Abstract

Since tree morphological structure is strongly influenced by internal genetic and external environmental factors, accurate simulation of individual morphological–structural changes in trees is the premise of forest management and 3D simulation. However, existing studies have few descriptions, and the research on the impact of growth environments and stand spatial structures on tree morphological structure and growth is still limited. In our study, we constructed a comprehensive grade model of spatial structure (CGMSS) to comprehensively evaluate individual tree growth states of the stands and grade them from 0 to 10 correspondingly. In addition, we developed a Chinese fir morphological structure growth model based on CGMSS, and dynamically simulate the growth variations of Chinese fir stands. The results showed that the overall stand prediction accuracy of CGMSS-based Chinese fir diameter at breast height, tree height, crown width and under-living branch height growth models was more than 94%. According to the analysis of the comprehensive grade of spatial structure (CGSS) of trees in the stand, except for the prediction accuracy and systematic error of the under-living branch height growth model at the CGSS = 3–5 levels, the systematic error of the Chinese fir growth model at each level was lower than 21.2%, and the prediction accuracy was greater than 73%. Compared with the spatial structural unit (SSU)-based Chinese fir growth model proposed by Ma et al., all growth models fit better at all levels, except for the CGMSS-based Chinese fir tree height and under-living branch height growth models that fit significantly lower than the SSU-based Chinese fir growth model at CGSS = 3–5 levels. In this study, the main conclusion is that the simulation results of CGMSS’s Chinese fir morphological structure growth model are closer to the real growth state of trees, achieving accurate simulation of differential growth of trees in different growth dominance degrees and spatial structure states in forest stands, making visualized forest management more effective and realistic.

Abstract The BESIII experiment has been operating since 2009 and has received several upgrades, to study the $$\tau $$ τ -charm physics utilizing the BEPCII accelerator. The BEPCII is a double-ring multi-bunch collider with a luminosity of $$1 \times 10^{33} \, {\text {cm}}^{-2} \, {\text {s}}^{-1}$$ 1 × 10 33 cm - 2 s - 1 optimized at a center-of-mass (cms) energy of $$2 \times 1.89$$ 2 × 1.89 GeV. The rich physics topics, long lifetime and the large volume of data present challenges to offline data processing. This paper describes the design and implementation of the offline software system to meet the requirements and challenges of BESIII, including offline software architecture, geometry management, database management, event data model and tag-based analysis.

8. New Coupled Canopy–Light Model (CCLM) to Improve Visual Polymorphism Simulation of Fir Morphology

Abstract

Environmental factors substantially influence the growth of trees. The current studies on tree growth simulation have mainly focused on the effect of environmental factors on diameter at breast height and tree height. However, the influence of environmental factors, especially light, on canopy morphology has not been considered, hindering the accurate understanding of the range of characteristics of tree morphology that occur due to environmental changes. To solve this problem, this study investigated the influence of light on the changes in canopy morphology and constructed a coupled canopy–light model (CCLM) to visually simulate the polymorphism of fir morphology. Using the Huangfengqiao Forestry Farm in You County, Hunan Province, China, as the study area, we selected a typical sample plot. Field surveys of the fir trees in the sample plot were conducted for three consecutive years to obtain longitudinal data of fir tree canopy shape. We constructed the canopy curves using a cubic uniform B-spline to construct 3D models of the fir trees in different years. The topographic and spatial location distribution data of the fir trees were used to construct a 3D scene of the sample plot in the UE4 3D engine, and the light distribution for each part of the canopy was calculated in a 3D scene by using the annual average photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) as the light parameter, which we combined with the ray-tracing algorithm. This study constructed the CCLM from the fir diameter using the breast-height growth model (BDGM) and the height–diameter curve model (HDCM), the fir trees’ canopy shape description from two years, and the light distribution data. We compared the canopy data obtained from canopy simulations using the CCLM with those obtained using a growth model based on spatial structure (GMBOSS) and those obtained from field surveys to identify any difference in the effectiveness of the canopy simulations using the CCLM and GMBOSS. Based on the BDGM and HDCM, we constructed the CCLM of firs with a determination coefficient (R2) of 0.829, combining data on canopy shape descriptions obtained from two years of field surveys and the light distribution data of each part of the canopy obtained through the ray-tracing algorithm. The Euclidean distance between the canopy description data obtained using the CCLM and the canopy description data obtained from the field survey was 15.561; that between the GMBOSS and the field survey was 23.944. A virtual forest stand environment was constructed from the survey data, combining ray-tracing algorithms to construct the CCLM model of fir in a virtual forest stand environment for growth visualization and simulation. Compared with the canopy description data obtained using the GMBOSS, the canopy description data obtained using the CCLM better fit the canopy description data obtained from the field survey, and the Euclidean distance decreased from 23.944 to 15.561.

9. A New Tree-Level Multi-Objective Forest Harvest Model (MO-PSO): Integrating Neighborhood Indices and PSO Algorithm to Improve the Optimization Effect of Spatial Structure

Abstract

Accurate, efficient, impersonal harvesting models play a very important role in optimizing stand spatial structural and guiding forest harvest practices. However, existing studies mainly focus on the single-objective optimization and evaluation of forest at the stand- or landscape-level, lacking considerations of tree-level neighborhood interactions. Therefore, the study explored the combination of the PSO algorithm and neighborhood indices to construct a tree-level multi-objective forest harvest model (MO-PSO) covering multi-dimensional spatial characteristics of stands. Taking five natural secondary forest plots and thirty simulated plots as the study area, the MO-PSO was used to simulate and evaluate the process of thinning operations. The results showed that the MO-PSO model was superior to the basic PSO model (PSO) and random thinning model Monte Carlo-based (RD-TH), DBH dominance (DOMI), uniform angle (ANGL), and species mingling (MING) were better than those before thinning. The multi-dimensional stand spatial structure index (L-index) increased by 1.0%~11.3%, indicating that the forest planning model (MO-PSO) could significantly improve the spatial distribution pattern, increase the tree species mixing, and reduce the degree of stand competition. In addition, under the four thinning intensities of 0% (T1), 15% (T2), 30% (T3), and 45% (T4), L-index increased and T2 was the optimal thinning intensity from the perspective of stand spatial structure overall optimization. The study explored the effect of thinning on forest spatial structure by constructing a multi-objective harvesting model, which can help to make reasonable and scientific forest management decisions under the concept of multi-objective forest management.

Abstract

The comprehensive indexes approach based on stand structure parameters is mainly used to select trees for harvest. However, these indexes do not consider the comprehensive impact of horizontal and vertical structures, leading to an incomplete analysis of the forest structure and an inaccurate selection of trees for harvest. To solve this problem, we constructed a comprehensive decision index of logging (CDIL), integrating horizontal and vertical structure parameters which can identify harvest trees more scientifically. In this study, we took the Shanxia Forest Farm in the Jiangxi Province of China as the experimental area and used mixed broadleaf/conifer forests at different ages as our experimental sample. We selected eight horizontal and vertical spatial structure parameters to establish an efficient, objective, and accurate comprehensive decision index of logging. We combined 3D visualization technology to realize the dynamic visualization simulation of the index at different intensities of tending and felling management. The results indicated that the proposed CDIL-index could effectively optimize the forest spatial structure. From the perspective of stand structure adjustment, the optimal thinning intensity was 20%. The average CDIL in each plot decreased by more than 80% after logging, while the change range of each plot was between 30% and 70% after the F index was applied to implement tending and logging. The CDIL was 11.4% more accurate in selecting trees for harvesting than the F index. In this study, the main conclusion is that the CDIL would enable forest managers to more accurately choose trees for harvesting, leading to forest adjustment that would reduce the competition pressure among trees and improve the distribution and health of trees, possibly making the forest structure more stable.

Abstract Background It has been confirmed that the ApoB/ApoA1 ratio is closely associated with the incidence of cardiometabolic diseases (CMD). However, due to uncontrolled confounding factors in observational studies, the causal relationship of this association remains unclear. Methods In this study, we extracted the ApoB/ApoA1 ratio and data on CMD and its associated risk factors from the largest European Genome-Wide Association Study. The purpose was to conduct Mendelian Randomization (MR) analysis. The causal relationship between the ApoB/ApoA1 ratio and CMD was evaluated using both univariable and multivariable MR analyses. Furthermore, bidirectional MR analysis was performed to estimate the causal relationship between the ApoB/ApoA1 ratio and risk factors for CMD. The final verification confirmed whether the ApoB/ApoA1 ratio exhibits a mediating effect in CMD and related risk factors. Abstract The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a multi-purpose experiment, under construction in southeast China, that is designed to determine the neutrino mass ordering and precisely measure neutrino oscillation parameters. Monte Carlo simulation plays an important role for JUNO detector design, detector commissioning, offline data processing, and physics processing. The JUNO experiment has the world’s largest liquid scintillator detector instrumented with many thousands of PMTs. The broad energy range of interest, long lifetime, and the large scale present data processing challenges across all areas. This paper describes the JUNO simulation software, highlighting the challenges of JUNO simulation and solutions to meet these challenges, including such issues as support for time-correlated analysis, event mixing, event correlation and handling the simulation of many millions of optical photons.

Abstract

Abstract Main goal of the JUNO experiment is to determine the neutrino mass ordering using a 20 kt liquid-scintillator detector. Its key feature is an excellent energy resolution of at least 3% at 1 MeV, for which its instruments need to meet a certain quality and thus have to be fully characterized. More than 20,000 20-inch PMTs have been received and assessed by JUNO after a detailed testing program which began in 2017 and elapsed for about four years. Based on this mass characterization and a set of specific requirements, a good quality of all accepted PMTs could be ascertained. This paper presents the performed testing procedure with the designed testing systems as well as the statistical characteristics of all 20-inch PMTs intended to be used in the JUNO experiment, covering more than fifteen performance parameters including the photocathode uniformity. This constitutes the largest sample of 20-inch PMTs ever produced and studied in detail to date, i.e. 15,000 of the newly developed 20-inch MCP-PMTs from Northern Night Vision Technology Co. (NNVT) and 5000 of dynode PMTs from Hamamatsu Photonics K. K.(HPK).

Abstract

The physics potential of detecting ^8 B solar neutrinos will be exploited at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), in a model-independent manner by using three distinct channels of the charged current (CC), neutral current (NC), and elastic scattering (ES) interactions. Due to the largest-ever mass of ^13 C nuclei in the liquid scintillator detectors and the expected low background level, ^8 B solar neutrinos are observable in the CC and NC interactions on ^13 C for the first time. By virtue of optimized event selections and muon veto strategies, backgrounds from the accidental coincidence, muon-induced isotopes, and external backgrounds can be greatly suppressed. Excellent signal-to-background ratios can be achieved in the CC, NC, and ES channels to guarantee the observation of the ^8 B solar neutrinos. From the sensitivity studies performed in this work, we show that JUNO, with 10 yr of data, can reach the 1 σ precision levels of 5%, 8%, and 20% for the ^8 B neutrino flux, ${\sin }^{2}{\theta }_{12}$ , and ${\rm{\Delta }}{m}_{21}^{2}$ , respectively. Probing the details of both solar physics and neutrino physics would be unique and helpful. In addition, when combined with the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory measurement, the world's best precision of 3% is expected for the measurement of the ^8 B neutrino flux.

Abstract

Abstract We study damping signatures at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a medium-baseline reactor neutrino oscillation experiment. These damping signatures are motivated by various new physics models, including quantum decoherence, ν 3 decay, neutrino absorption, and wave packet decoherence. The phenomenological effects of these models can be characterized by exponential damping factors at the probability level. We assess how well JUNO can constrain these damping parameters and how to disentangle these different damping signatures at JUNO. Compared to current experimental limits, JUNO can significantly improve the limits on τ 3/m 3 in the ν 3 decay model, the width of the neutrino wave packet σ x , and the intrinsic relative dispersion of neutrino momentum σ rel.

Abstract

The relationship between the in-stent neoatherosclerosis (ISNA) formation and the plaque’s characteristic changes in the non-culprit lesion is unclear. We aim to investigate the plaque characteristics changes at non-culprit lesions between patients with ISNA and without ISNA formation at 1-year follow-up. We retrospectively enrolled patients who had DES implantation in de novo lesion and underwent immediately after stenting and 1-year follow-up optical coherence tomography (OCT) examination. OCT-defined ISNA was defined as the presence of lipid-laden neointima or calcification within the culprit stent with a longitudinal extension of ≥1 mm. Non-culprit lesions were divided into two groups: ISNA group (with ISNA) and non-ISNA group (without ISNA). Plaque characteristics of non-culprit lesions were evaluated at baseline and 1-year follow-up. In total, 89 patients with 89 non-culprit lesions (ISNA: n = 37; non-ISNA: n = 52) were included in the analyses. The lesions in the ISNA group show a smaller minimum lumen area compared to the non-ISNA group at 1-year follow-up (2.57 ± 1.08 mm2 versus 3.20 ± 1.62 mm2, p = 0.044). The lesions of the ISNA group show a significant decrease in minimum lumen area changes percent (–7.25% versus 6.46%, p = 0.039). And there are more lesions with minimum lumen area (64.9% versus 38.5%, p = 0.014) and minimum lumen diameter (64.9% versus 40.4%, p = 0.023) decrease in the ISNA group. Furthermore, the lesions in ISNA group have more plaques with lipid core length increase (25.0% versus 10.0%, p = 0.040), more plaques with FCT decrease (50.0% versus 74.0%, p = 0.027) and less TCFA change to non-TCFA (33.3% versus 87.5%, p = 0.010). The plaque characteristic changes in non-culprit lesions are closely related to ISNA formation. The ISNA formation may accompany by a tardier plaque stabilization process in non-culprit lesions.

Abstract

Abstract The OSIRIS detector is a subsystem of the liquid scintillator filling chain of the JUNO reactor neutrino experiment. Its purpose is to validate the radiopurity of the scintillator to assure that all components of the JUNO scintillator system work to specifications and only neutrino-grade scintillator is filled into the JUNO Central Detector. The aspired sensitivity level of $$10^{-16}\hbox { g/g}$$ 10 - 16 g/g of $$^{238}\hbox {U}$$ 238 U and $$^{232}\hbox {Th}$$ 232 Th requires a large ( $$\sim 20\,\hbox {m}^3$$ ∼ 20 m 3 ) detection volume and ultralow background levels. The present paper reports on the design and major components of the OSIRIS detector, the detector simulation as well as the measuring strategies foreseen and the sensitivity levels to U/Th that can be reached in this setup.

Abstract

Abstract JUNO is a massive liquid scintillator detector with a primary scientific goal of determining the neutrino mass ordering by studying the oscillated anti-neutrino flux coming from two nuclear power plants at 53 km distance. The expected signal anti-neutrino interaction rate is only 60 counts per day (cpd), therefore a careful control of the background sources due to radioactivity is critical. In particular, natural radioactivity present in all materials and in the environment represents a serious issue that could impair the sensitivity of the experiment if appropriate countermeasures were not foreseen. In this paper we discuss the background reduction strategies undertaken by the JUNO collaboration to reduce at minimum the impact of natural radioactivity. We describe our efforts for an optimized experimental design, a careful material screening and accurate detector production handling, and a constant control of the expected results through a meticulous Monte Carlo simulation program. We show that all these actions should allow us to keep the background count rate safely below the target value of 10 Hz (i.e. ∼1 cpd accidental background) in the default fiducial volume, above an energy threshold of 0.7 MeV.

Abstract

Abstract Atmospheric neutrinos are one of the most relevant natural neutrino sources that can be exploited to infer properties about cosmic rays and neutrino oscillations. The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) experiment, a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector with excellent energy resolution is currently under construction in China. JUNO will be able to detect several atmospheric neutrinos per day given the large volume. A study on the JUNO detection and reconstruction capabilities of atmospheric $$\nu _e$$ ν e and $$\nu _\mu $$ ν μ fluxes is presented in this paper. In this study, a sample of atmospheric neutrino Monte Carlo events has been generated, starting from theoretical models, and then processed by the detector simulation. The excellent timing resolution of the 3” PMT light detection system of JUNO detector and the much higher light yield for scintillation over Cherenkov allow to measure the time structure of the scintillation light with very high precision. Since $$\nu _e$$ ν e and $$\nu _\mu $$ ν μ interactions produce a slightly different light pattern, the different time evolution of light allows to discriminate the flavor of primary neutrinos. A probabilistic unfolding method has been used, in order to infer the primary neutrino energy spectrum from the detector experimental observables. The simulated spectrum has been reconstructed between 100 MeV and 10 GeV, showing a great potential of the detector in the atmospheric low energy region.

Abstract

Abstract We present the calibration strategy for the 20 kton liquid scintillator central detector of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). By utilizing a comprehensive multiple-source and multiple-positional calibration program, in combination with a novel dual calorimetry technique exploiting two independent photosensors and readout systems, we demonstrate that the JUNO central detector can achieve a better than 1% energy linearity and a 3% effective energy resolution, required by the neutrino mass ordering determination.

Abstract

Locally-originated typhoons in the South China Sea (SCS) are characterized by long duration, complex track, and high probability of landfall, which tend to cause severe wind, rainstorm, and flood disasters in coastal regions. Therefore, it is of great significance to conduct research on typhoon precipitation microphysics in the SCS. Using GPM satellite observations, the precipitation microphysics of typhoons in the SCS are analyzed by combining case and statistical studies. The precipitation of Typhoon Ewiniar (2018) in the SCS is found to be highly asymmetric. In the eyewall, the updraft is strong, the coalescence process of particles is distinct, and the precipitation is mainly concentrated in large raindrops. In the outer rainbands, the “bright-band” of melting layer is distinct, the melting of ice particles and the evaporation of raindrops are distinct, and there exist a few large raindrops in the precipitation. Overall, the heavy precipitation of typhoons in the SCS is composed of higher concentration of smaller raindrops than that in the western Pacific (WP), leading to a more “oceanic deep convective” feature of typhoons in the SCS. While the heavy precipitation of typhoons in the SCS is both larger in drop size and number concentration than that in the North Indian Ocean (NIO), leading to more abundant rainwater of typhoons in the SCS. For the relatively weak precipitation (R < 10 mm h−1), the liquid water path (LWP) of typhoons in the SCS is higher than that of the NIO, while the ice water path (IWP) of the locally-originated typhoons in the SCS is lower than that of the WP. For the heavy precipitation (R ≥ 10 mm h−1), the LWP and IWP of typhoons in the SCS are significantly higher than those in the WP and NIO.

Abstract

Background: Most acute coronary syndromes occur due to coronary thrombosis caused by plaque rupture (PR) and plaque erosion (PE). Precise in vivo differentiation between PR and PE is challenging for intravascular imaging. This study is the first to determine the diagnostic performance of the novel 60 MHz high-definition intravascular ultrasound (HD-IVUS) for differentiating atherosclerotic plaque morphology influenced by local hemodynamic flow in rabbits. This study evaluated the diagnostic performance of 60 MHz HD-IVUS in identifying thrombosis in rabbits. Methods: We established 60 rabbit models of atherosclerosis with left common carotid artery (LCCA) stenosis and 30 FeCl3-induced LCCA thrombosis. Intravascular imaging was assessed with 60 MHz HD-IVUS and fourier-domain optical coherence tomography (FD-OCT). The present study investigated the diagnostic accuracy of 60 MHz HD-IVUS for PR and PE, as well as thrombosis, using OCT-diagnosis as a standard reference. Results: 60 MHz HD-IVUS for identifying atherosclerotic plaque morphology using plaque cavity and minor intimal irregularities showed high sensitivity and specificity; 92.0 and 90.0% for identifying OCT-defined PR, and 80.0 and 70.0% for OCT-defined PE, respectively. In a rabbit thrombus model, 60 MHz HD-IVUS showed high sensitivity (88.0%) and specificity (80.0%) in identifying OCT-defined thrombosis. Conclusions: 60 MHz HD-IVUS can accurately identify PR and thrombosis. Further studies should confirm the clinical value of this novel technique in PE diagnosis.

Abstract

Hyperglycemia-induced endothelial cell senescence has been widely reported to be involved in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes mellitus‒accelerated atherosclerosis. Thus, understanding the underlying mechanisms and identifying potential therapeutic targets for endothelial cell senescence are valuable for attenuating atherosclerosis progression. C1q/tumor necrosis factor-related protein 9 (CTRP9), an emerging potential cardiokine, exerts a significant protective effect with respect to atherosclerosis, particularly in endothelial cells. However, the exact mechanism by which CTRP9 prevents endothelial cells from hyperglycemia-induced senescence remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effects of CTRP9 on hyperglycemia-induced endothelial cell senescence and atherosclerotic plaque formation in diabetic apolipoprotein E knockout (ApoE KO) mice. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were cultured in normal glucose (5.5 mM) and high glucose (40 mM) with or without recombinant human CTRP9 protein (3 μg/ml) for 48 h. Purified lentiviruses overexpressing CTRP9 (Lv-CTRP9) and control vectors containing green fluorescent protein (Lv-GFP) were injected via the tail vein into streptozotocin-induced diabetic ApoE KO mice. Results revealed that exposure of HUVECs to HG significantly increased the expression of Krüppel-like factor 4 (KLF4) and cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p21 (p21) and decreased that of telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT). Treatment with recombinant human CTRP9 protein protected HUVECs from HG-induced premature senescence and dysfunction. CTRP9 promoted the phosphorylation of AMP-activated kinase (AMPK), attenuated the expression of KLF4 and p21 induced by HG, and increased the expression of TERT in HUVECs. Furthermore, in the background of AMPKα knockdown or KLF4 activation, the protective effects of CTRP9 were abolished. In-vivo experiments showed that the overexpression of CTRP9 inhibited vascular senescence and reduced atherosclerotic plaque formation in ApoE KO mice with diabetes. In conclusion, we demonstrate that KLF4 upregulation plays a crucial role in HG-induced endothelial senescence. This anti-atherosclerotic effect of CTRP9 may be partly attributed to the inhibition of HG-induced endothelial senescence through an AMPKα/KLF4-dependent mechanism, suggesting that CTRP9 could benefit further therapeutic approaches for type 2 diabetes mellitus‒accelerated atherosclerosis.

Abstract

Introduction: It has been reported that sex has well-established relationships with the prevalence of coronary artery disease (CAD) and the major adverse cardiovascular events. Compared with men, the difference of coronary artery and myocardial characteristics in women has effects on anatomical and functional evaluations. Quantitative flow ratio (QFR) has been shown to be effective in assessing the hemodynamic relevance of lesions in stable coronary disease. However, its suitability in acute myocardial infarction patients is unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the sex differences in the non-infarct-related artery (NIRA)-based QFR in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).Methods: In this study, 353 patients with STEMI who underwent angiographic cQFR assessment and interventional therapy were included. According to contrast-flow QFR (cQFR) standard operating procedures: reliable software was used to modeling the hyperemic flow velocity derived from coronary angiography in the absence of pharmacologically induced hyperemia. 353 patients were divided into two groups according to sex. A cQFR ≤0.80 was considered hemodynamically significant, whereas invasive coronary angiography (ICA) luminal stenosis ≥50% was considered obstructive. Demographics, clinical data, NIRA-related anatomy, and functional cQFR values were recorded. Clinical outcomes included the NIRA reclassification rate between men and women, according to the ICA and cQFR assessments.Results: Women were older and had a higher body mass index (BMI) than men. The levels of diastolic blood pressure, troponin I, peak creatine kinase-MB, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, N terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide, stent diameter, and current smoking rate were found to be significantly lower in the female group than in the male group. Women had a lower likelihood of a positive cQFR ≤0.80 for the same degree of stenosis and a lower rate of NIRA revascularization. Independent predictors of positive cQFR included male sex and diameter stenosis (DS) >70%.Conclusions: cQFR values differ between the sexes, as women have a higher cQFR value for the same degree of stenosis. The findings suggest that QFR variations by sex require specific interpretation, as these differences may affect therapeutic decision-making and clinical outcomes.

Abstract Background Atherosclerosis preferentially develops in regions of disturbed flow (DF). Emerging evidence indicates that yes-associated protein (YAP) and transcriptional co-activator with PDZ-binding motif (TAZ), which are both effectors of the Hippo pathway, sense different blood flow patterns and regulate atherosclerotic lesions. We previously found that methotrexate (MTX) reduces in-stent neoatherosclerosis, decreases the plaque burden, and has an effect on local fluid shear stress. Here, we investigated the atheroprotective effect of MTX under DF and the mechanisms underlying these properties. Methods Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were subjected to biomechanical stretch using a parallel-plate flow system and treated with or without MTX at therapeutically relevant concentrations. Additionally, an extravascular device was used to induce DF in the left common carotid artery of C57BL/6 mice, followed by treatment with MTX or 0.9% saline. The artery was then assessed histopathologically after 4 weeks on a Western diet. Results We observed that MTX significantly inhibited DF-induced endothelial YAP/TAZ activation. Furthermore, it markedly decreased pro-inflammatory factor secretion and monocyte adhesion in HUVECs but had no effect on apoptosis. Mechanistically, AMPKa1 depletion attenuated these effects of MTX. Accordingly, MTX decreased DF-induced plaque formation, which was accompanied by YAP/TAZ downregulation in vivo. Conclusions Taken together, we conclude that MTX exerts protective effects via the AMP-dependent kinase (AMPK)-YAP/TAZ pathway. These results provide a basis for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis via the inhibition of YAP/TAZ.

Abstract

We present PandaX-II constraints on candidate WIMP-nucleon effective interactions involving the nucleon or WIMP spin, including, in addition to standard axial spin-dependent (SD) scattering, various couplings among vector and axial currents, magnetic and electric dipole moments, and tensor interactions. The data set corresponding to a total exposure of 54-ton-days is reanalyzed to determine constraints as a function of the WIMP mass and isospin coupling. We obtain WIMP-nucleon cross section bounds of 1.6×10−41 cm2 and 9.0×10−42 cm2 (90% c.l.) for neutron-only SD and tensor coupling, respectively, for a mass MWIMP∼40GeV/c2. The SD limits are the best currently available for MWIMP>40GeV/c2. We show that PandaX-II has reached a sensitivity sufficient to probe a variety of other candidate spin-dependent interactions at the weak scale. Abstract

The article presents a study which analyzed the application of the Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) method with masking signal in the identification of model parameters against the offshore platform structures with closely spaced modes of vibration. The parts of the HHT method are Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) and Hilbert transform. The use of a masking signal to improve EMD is discussed, as well as the improvement of the masking signal technique. The dynamic responses of a model of an offshore platform excited by a hammer are analyzed.

30. A Comparison of Convective and Stratiform Precipitation Microphysics of the Record-breaking Typhoon In-Fa (2021)

Abstract

In July 2021, Typhoon In-Fa attacked eastern China and broke many records for extreme precipitation over the last century. Such an unrivaled impact results from In-Fa’s slow moving speed and long residence time due to atmospheric circulations. With the supports of 66 networked surface disdrometers over eastern China and collaborative observations from the advanced GPM satellite, we are able to reveal the unique precipitation microphysical properties of the record-breaking Typhoon In-Fa (2021). After separating the typhoon precipitation into convective and stratiform types and comparing the drop size distribution (DSD) properties of Typhoon In-Fa with other typhoons from different climate regimes, it is found that typhoon precipitation shows significant internal differences as well as regional differences in terms of DSD-related parameters, such as mass-weighted mean diameter (Dm), normalized intercept parameter (Nw), radar reflectivity (Z), rain rate (R), and intercept, shape, and slope parameters (N0, µ, Λ). Comparing different rain types inside Typhoon In-Fa, convective rain (Nw ranging from 3.80 to 3.96 mm−1 m−3) shows higher raindrop concentration than stratiform rain (Nw ranging from 3.40 to 3.50 mm−1 m−3) due to more graupels melting into liquid water while falling. Large raindrops occupy most of the region below the melting layer in convective rain due to a dominant coalescence process of small raindrops (featured by larger ZKu, Dm, and smaller N0, µ, Λ), while small raindrops account for a considerable proportion in stratiform rain, reflecting a significant collisional breakup process of large raindrops (featured by smaller ZKu, Dm, and larger N0, µ, Λ). Compared with other typhoons in Hainan and Taiwan, the convective precipitation of Typhoon In-Fa shows a larger (smaller) raindrop concentration than that of Taiwan (Hainan), while smaller raindrop diameter than both Hainan and Taiwan. Moreover, the typhoon convective precipitation measured in In-Fa is more maritime-like than precipitation in Taiwan. Based on a great number of surface disdrometer observational data, the GPM precipitation products were further validated for both rain types, and a series of native quantitative precipitation estimation relations, such as Z–R and R–Dm relations were derived to improve the typhoon rainfall retrieval for both ground-based radar and spaceborne radar.

Abstract Background The platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), an indirect inflammatory biomarker, has been recently demonstrated to be associated with severity of coronary artery disease. In the present study, we sought to investigate whether PLR is associated with vulnerable plaque characteristics of non-culprit lesions in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Methods The patients in our study were divided into two groups (high PLR group and low PLR group). A total of 119 non-culprit plaques from 71 patients with ACS were assessed by optical coherence tomography (OCT). Results The non-culprit plaques in high PLR group exhibited thinner fibrous cap thickness (FCT) (88.60 ± 44.70 vs. 119.28 ± 50.22 μm, P = 0.001), greater maximum lipid arc (271.73 ± 71.66 vs. 240.60 ± 76.69°, P = 0.027) and increased incidence of thin-cap fibroatheroma (TCFA) (34.0% vs. 15.9%, P = 0.022) compared with those in low PLR group.
