High-frequency, low-energy impacts consistently inflict damage on the surrounding rock and anchoring structure in deep roadways, leading to ongoing instability. The construction of anchoring support system that can withstand these dynamic impact loads is identified as crucial in deep coal mining. Through theoretical analysis, laboratory experiments, and numerical simulations, the stress transfer and transformation mechanisms within the anchoring structure under such loads are explored. The cumulative damage and progressive failure of the structure are studied, with criteria being proposed for controlling the roadways under dynamic impact conditions. The findings reveal that three primary elements, i.e., compressive stress, tensile stress, and oscillatory effects caused by quick transitions between compression and tension, are responsible for damaging the anchoring structure. Crucially, the failure of anchoring interface under such conditions is primarily due to the medium's compressive strength and uncoordinated deformation. Damage in the anchoring structure accumulates under internal normal forces, leading to failure when the tangential modulus turns negative or the deformation from a single dynamic impact continuously increases contrary to expectations. A significant cumulative-mutation effect is observed under the combined influence of compression, tension, and oscillation, particularly in terms of the loss of pre-tightening force and internal damage in anchoring structure. Internal fissures predominantly exhibit tensile fractures, with an overall deterioration transitioning gradually from oscillatory effects to tensile stress effects, and subsequently to compressive failure effects. To effectively reduce this cumulative damage, it is crucial to improve the coordinated deformation capacity of both the surrounding rock and the anchoring agent. Additionally, increasing the anchoring length not only enhances structural stiffness but also mobilizes a broader range of rock mass for load-bearing, thereby protecting the anchoring interface, ensuring that the shear resistance in the anchoring structure’s bearing area surpasses the internal normal driving force during dynamic impacts, and mitigating the effects of oscillation can effectively reduce the cumulative damage degree of the anchoring structure. Finally, a new guideline for controlling the roadways under dynamic impact loading is proposed. The guideline, characterized by low energy, high resistance, and an allowance for compression, includes strategies such as far-field unloading, strong support in the near field, modification of fractured surrounding rock, maintaining pre-tightening force, and incorporating compression structures. It aims to provide an effective guidance for the maintenance and control of roadways in similar conditions.

Dynamic load on anchoring structures (AS) within deep roadways can result in cumulative damage and failure. This study develops an experimental device designed to test AS under triaxial loads. The device enables the investigation of the mechanical response, failure mode, instability assessment criteria, and anchorage effect of AS subjected to combined cyclic dynamic-static triaxial stress paths. The results show that the peak bearing strength is positively correlated with the anchoring matrix strength, anchorage length, and edgewise compressive strength. The bearing capacity decreases significantly when the anchorage direction is severely inclined. The free face failure modes are typically transverse cracking, concave fracturing, V-shaped slipping and detachment, and spallation detachment. Besides, when the anchoring matrix strength and the anchorage length decrease while the edgewise compressive strength, loading rate, and anchorage inclination angle increase, the failure intensity rises. Instability is determined by a negative tangent modulus of the displacement-strength curve or the continued deformation increase against the general downward trend. Under cyclic loads, the driving force that breaks the rock mass along the normal vector and the rigidity of the AS are the two factors that determine roadway stability. Finally, a control measure for surrounding rock stability is proposed to reduce the internal driving force via a pressure relief method and improve the rigidity of the AS by full-length anchorage and grouting modification.

Abstract Silicon carbide (SiC) PiN diode has shown substantial promise as the freewheel diode for switch protection in a pulsed system. In this paper, we investigate the carrier lifetime (τ) modulation on pulsed current capability of SiC PiN diodes. The carrier lifetime in 4H–SiC is modulated by the generation of the Z 1/2 center through neutron irradiation. Surprisingly, we found that the pulsed current of SiC PiN diodes shows a limited improvement when the carrier lifetime (τ) increases from 0.22 to 1.3 μs, while is significantly promoted as the carrier lifetime increases from 0.03 to 0.22 μs. This changing trend is obviously different from the on-state resistance, which decreases with the increased carrier lifetime. The simulation result indicates that the heat generation (i.e., maximum temperature rise) inside the PiN diodes, especially in the drift layer, is remarkably aggravated in the pulse tests for τ

Abstract Backgrounds Grazing prohibition and reduced grazing intensity, as two important “vegetation close‐to‐nature recovery” methods, have been suggested as economical and effective technologies for enhancing forage production. However, numerous studies have found that the yield of forage could be increased by removing or reducing grazing in a short time in some steady stage of alpine Kobresia meadows, but not in others. To reveal the mechanism behind this phenomenon, we proposed a series of experiments. Methods We monitored the plant and soil characteristics in the key steady stages of Kobresia meadows under reduced and prohibited grazing conditions in the same geographic and climatic environments in the northeastern Qinghai‐Tibet Plateau for 6 years. We estimated the relationships between the plant community and soil nutrients and obtained the following results. Results All measured variables were positively correlated with each other. The plant community structure had higher path coefficients to aboveground biomass, soil organic matter, total nitrogen, and nitrate nitrogen than to other factors. The plant community structure played an important role in response to grazing intensity. Different plant functional groups (PFGs) had different responses to grazing intensity, which led to plant community re‐establishment or re‐organization under different grazing intensities. Poaceae and Kobresia were more sensitive to grazing intensity than other PFGs, and the ratio of Kobresia biomass (including Kobresia humilis and Kobresia pygmaea) to the total biomass of Poaceae and Kobresia could be used as an indicator of regime shifts within plant communities. With Kobresia pygmaea as the dominant species, the prohibition of grazing was not an efficient approach to increase the yield in the steady stages because this treatment needed more time to recover aboveground biomass. If Poaceae is the dominant PFG, grazing should only be prohibited for 3 years in the steady stages because the aboveground biomass will decrease if grazing is prohibited for more than 3 years. Conclusions Therefore, the different steady stages of alpine meadows require different recovery methods to increase recovery efficiency and speed.

In alpine meadows, plants and soil microbes typically engage in competition for nitrogen (N) under N-deficient conditions. However, the acquisition and distribution of N among soil microbes and plants under alpine meadow degradation and climate warming induced by global climate change are still uncharacterized. In this study, we isotope labeled inorganic (NH4+-15N, NO3−-15N) and organic (glycine-15N) N in both degraded and non-degraded plots by using open-top chambers (OTC) to mimic increasing air temperatures. After 6 h, the 15N contents in soil microbes and plants were measured to investigate the effects of degradation and rising air temperature on N allocations in the ecosystems studied. Results showed that alpine meadow degradation significantly reduced soil microbial N accumulation by 52% compared to those in non-degraded plots. In non-degraded plots, warming significantly lowered the organic N levels of soil microbes by 49%, whereas in degraded ones, it reduced both NH4+-15N and NO3−-15N recovery by 80% and 45% on average but increased glycine-15N recovery by 653%. Meanwhile, warming decreased the plant recovery of NH4+-15N and NO3−-15N by 75% and 45% but increased the recovery of glycine-15N by 45% in non-degraded plots. Conversely, in degraded plots, warming markedly lowered NH4+-15N recovery by 40% but increased glycine-15N recovery by 114%. Warming mitigates the effects of alpine meadow degradation on nitrogen allocation among soil microbes and plants. In unwarmed plots, degradation significantly elevated the total 15N recovery ratio of soil microbes to plants by 60%. However, in warmed plots, the impact of degradation on this ratio was reduced. The responses of the 15N recovery ratio of soil microbes and plants to rising temperatures were closely related to alpine meadow quality. In non-degraded areas, warming enhanced the recovery ratio for NH4+-15N by 165% but reduced it for glycine-15N by 66%. Conversely, in degraded plots, warming decreased the recovery ratio for NH4+-15N by 66% but increased it for glycine-15N by 232%. This indicates that warming can increase carbon limitation for soil microbes in degraded alpine meadows, and the restoration of degraded alpine meadows should prioritize restoring carbon accumulation.

Microseismic P- and S-phase segmentation is an influential step that limits the accuracy of event location, parameter inversion, and mechanism analysis. Therefore, an improved Unet named PSSegNet is proposed to intelligently segment the P- and S-phases. The designed masks are used as the outputs of PSSegNet, which is used to obtain the time–frequency features of the P- and S-phases. As a result, the MSE (mean square error) between the predicted mask and the actual labeled mask is concentrated below 2.5, and the AE (accumulated error) of the reconstructed P/S-phase based on the predicted mask is concentrated below 1.0 × 10−3. Arrival picking results show that the overall error of the entire test set is less than 50 ms and most of the errors are less than 20 ms. Data with SNR (signal to noise ratio) < 2, 2 ≤ SNR < 3, PSR (P-phase to S-phase ratio) < 1, or 1 ≤ PSR < 2 in the dataset were selected for arrival picking and their errors were counted. The statistical results show that PSSegNet is robust at low SNR and PSR. The P- and S-phase segmentation based on PSSegNet has excellent potential for use in various applications and can effectively reduce the difficulty of obtaining the P/S-phase arrivals.

Open-pit mines are becoming more intelligent and unmanned. One of the core technologies for autonomous driving is high-definition map technology, while refined mine maps are also needed to support scenarios such as vehicle–shovel collaboration, loading and unloading, production scheduling, and traffic safety control. To better serve the construction of intelligent mines and address the autonomous driving needs in open-pit mining scenarios, a universal high-definition map data model oriented toward data production and exchange, Open-Pit Map (OP map for short), has been designed. Based on various working scenarios of open-pit mines, eight practical basic elements, eleven location elements, and eight traffic elements in OP map were proposed. A map visualization tool, MapViewer, was developed based on OP map, and the effectiveness and practicality of the data model in the practical application of an intelligent shipping system in a Chinese mine were validated.

The Tibetan Kobresia pastures store 2.5% of the world’s soil organic carbon. Here the authors show that soil degradation and microbial shifts may irreversibly diminish the carbon sink function and accelerate nutrient losses.

Abstract Permafrost is experiencing climate warming at a rate that is two times faster than the rest of the Earth's surface. However, it is still lack of a quantitative basis for predicting the functional stability of permafrost ecosystems in carbon (C) and nutrient cycling. We compiled the data of 708 observations from 89 air‐warming experiments in the Northern Hemisphere and characterized the general effects of temperature increase on permafrost C exchange and balance, biomass production, microbial biomass, soil nutrients, and vegetation N dynamics through a meta‐analysis. Also, an investigation was made on how responses might change with habitat‐specific (e.g., plant functional groups and soil moisture status) conditions and warming variables (e.g., warming phases, levels, and timing). The net ecosystem C exchange (NEE) was found to be downregulated by warming as a result of a stronger sensitivity to warming in respiration (15.6%) than in photosynthesis (6.2%). Vegetation usually responded to warming by investing more C to the belowground, as belowground biomass increased much more (30.1%) than aboveground biomass (2.9%). Warming had a minor effect on microbial biomass. Warming increased soil ammonium and nitrate concentrations. What's more, a synthesis of 70 observations from 11 herbs and 9 shrubs revealed a 2.5% decline of N in green leaves. Compared with herbs, shrubs had a stronger response to respiration and had a decline in green leaf N to a greater extent. Not only in dry condition did green leaf N decline with warming but also in wet conditions. Warming in nongrowing seasons would negatively affect soil water, C uptake, and biomass production during growing seasons. Permafrost C loss and vegetation N decline may increase with warming levels and timing. Overall, these findings suggest that besides a positive C cycling–climate feedback, there will be a negative feedback between permafrost nutrient cycling and climate warming.

Abstract In this paper, the effect of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation on the static characteristics of high voltage 4H-SiC PiN is investigated. No significant change is observed in the forward on state characteristic of 4H-SiC PiN diodes before and after ultraviolet light irradiation. However, it is found that the blocking voltage is significantly increased with UV irradiation, which is resulted from the depletion region width extension with the collection of positive charges under the increase of the surface negative charge density. The deep level transient spectroscopy reveals that the UV irradiation induced deep-level defects play a dominant role over the trapped negative charges, and therefore leads to the increase of blocking voltage of 4H-SiC PiN Diodes.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a powerful greenhouse gas and the predominant stratospheric ozone-depleting substance. Soil is a major source of N2O but remains largely uncertain due to the complicated processes of nitrification and denitrification performed by various groups of microbes such as bacteria, fungi, and archaea. We used incubation experiments to measure the total fungal, archaeal, and bacterial N2O production potential and the microbial functional genes in soils along 3,000 km Chinese grassland transect, including meadow steppe, typical steppe, desert steppe, alpine meadow, and alpine steppe. The results indicated that fungi, archaea, and bacteria contributed 25, 34, and 19% to nitrification and 46, 29, and 15% to denitrification, respectively. The AOA and AOB genes were notably correlated with the total nitrification enzyme activity (TNEA), whereas both narG and nirK genes were significantly correlated with total denitrification enzyme activity (TDEA) at p < 0.01. The correlations between AOA and ANEA (archaeal nitrification enzyme activity), AOB and BNEA (bacterial nitrification enzyme activity), and narG, nirK, and BDEA (bacterial denitrification enzyme activity) showed higher coefficients than those between the functional genes and TNEA/TDEA. The structural equation modeling (SEM) results showed that fungi are dominant in N2O production processes, followed by archaea in the northern Chinese grasslands. Our findings indicate that the microbial functional genes are powerful predictors of the N2O production potential, after distinguishing bacterial, fungal, and archaeal processes. The key variables of N2O production and the nitrogen (N) cycle depend on the dominant microbial functional groups in the N-cycle in soils.

Dandelion-like CuCo2O4 nanoflowers (CCO NFs) with ultrathin NiMn layered double hydroxide (LDH) shells were fabricated via a two-step hydrothermal method. The prepared CuCo2O4@NiMn LDH core/shell nanoflowers (CCO@NM LDH NFs) possessed a high specific surface area (~181 m2·g−1) with an average pore size of ~256 nm. Herein, the CCO@NM LDH NFs exhibited the typical battery-type electrode material with a specific capacity of 2156.53 F·g−1 at a current density of 1 A·g−1. With the increase in current density, the rate capability retention was 68.3% at a current density of 10 A·g−1. In particular, the 94.6% capacity of CCO@NM LDH NFs remains after 2500 cycles at 5 A·g−1. An asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) with CCO@NM LDH NFs//activated carbon (AC) demonstrates a remarkable capacitance of 303.11 F·g−1 at 1 A·g−1 with excellent cycling stability. The coupling and synergistic effects of multi-valence transition metals provide a convenient channel for the electrochemical process, which is beneficial to spread widely within the realm of electrochemical energy storage.

In view of the problems of composite roof coal roadway under multiple dynamic pressure disturbances such as strong stratification, large deformation of the roadway surrounding rock, and poor safety and reliability, this paper analyzed the deformation and instability characteristics of composite roof coal roadway under different influencing factors using numerical simulation and expounded the stress distribution pattern of composite roof coal roadway under multiple dynamic pressure disturbances. The geological conditions of gas control roadway in the 22301 working face of Tunlan coal mine are taken as examples, and this study is carried out based on the analysis of roof instability conditions of composite roof coal roadway. The progressive crack development characteristics in composite roof coal roadway and the instability failure mode of surrounding rock under multiple dynamic pressure disturbances were revealed, and the control mechanism and support scheme were put forward. According to the result, it is difficult to form a stable bearing rock beam due to the occurrence characteristics of the weak interlayer of the composite roof. The deflection of the roadway roof and the extent of the plastic zone are negatively correlated with the distance from the soft rock layer to the roadway but positively correlated with the thickness of the soft rock layer. As the lateral pressure coefficient λ increases, the plastic zone of the roadway surrounding rock first decreases and then increases. With the increasing influence of dynamic pressure, the coal roadway with composite roof suffers from greater damage under the superposition of high ground stress, lateral abutment pressure, and advance abutment pressure, which is characterized by significant zonal failure of the roof and asymmetric failure of surrounding rock. The control method of high-strength thick anchorage+differential support can construct the thick layer stable rock beam of the roof and equivalent support of the side, realizing continuous stress transfer and geometrically coordinated deformation. The support scheme was finally applied to the on-site industrial test, and the mine pressure monitoring results showed that the deformation of the roadway surrounding rock was effectively controlled under the new support scheme.

Silicon carbide (SiC) devices have shown substantial promise in realizing ultrahigh-voltage and high power, and have been usually considered as a potential candidate for high radiation levels applications. However, in this work it is found that the SiC P-intrinsic-N (PiN) diodes are sensitive to the electron irradiation, which exerts significant influence on the device characteristics. The physical mechanisms behind these behaviors are studied by probing the production of point defects and the evolution of carrier lifetime in the SiC epilayers after irradiation. It is found that the forward current is significantly reduced by irradiation and the specific on-resistance monotonously increases with the increasing electron fluences, which is resulted from the deteriorated conductivity modulation effects in the epilayer due to the enhanced carrier recombination from the radiation induced deep-level defects, such as the carbon vacancy (VC), silicon vacancy (VSi) and VC+VSi complexes. Inversely, no significant change is observed in the reverse leakage current of 4H-SiC PiN diodes, and the breakdown voltage even slightly increases after electron irradiation, which are ascribed to the suppressed carrier generation arising from the point defects in 4H-SiC with a wide bandgap and the carrier-removal effects caused by the acceptor like point defects generated during irradiation, respectively.

Co3Sn2 with Co(II)-enriched amorphous layer was fabricated through reduction of Sn2+ under hydrothermal conditions. The material exhibited excellent performance for the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for Rhodamine B (RhB) removal. Almost 100% of RhB was removed using Co3Sn2/PMS within 10 min with an apparent rate constant of kapp = 0.515 min−1, which was higher than other cobalt-based catalysts. This performance of Co3Sn2 is suggested to be a synergistic effect between the Co(II)-layer with abundant active sites and the metallic core with excellent electron conductivity. Several pivotal parameters were investigated. Sulfate radicals and hydroxyl radicals were proven to be major oxidative species.

In the last several decades, overgrazing has led to various changes in the plant communities, soil nutrients and soil microbial communities in alpine Kobresia meadows, which contain various plant communities coexisting on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. Investigating the variations in the biomass and concentration of nutrients in the plant–soil system in these communities may improve understanding of the biochemical responses and adaptation strategies they use to resist disturbances due to overgrazing. We therefore assessed 12 factors across four grazing intensities in alpine Kobresia meadows to explore the following three questions. (1) What the responses are in alpine Kobresia meadows to overgrazing. (2) How they affect plant–soil systems in alpine Kobresia meadows under overgrazing. (3) What factors can be used to evaluate the effects of overgrazing on the ecosystem health status of alpine Kobresia meadows. The results gave the following answers to the above questions. (1) Overgrazing caused the total aboveground biomass to decrease from 333.2 ± 17.4 g/m2 to 217.4 ± 30.2 g/m2, the coverage of plant functional groups of Gramineae and Cyperaceae to decrease from 74.2 ± 3% to 22.5 ± 1.9%, and the total belowground biomass to increase from 4028.5 ± 7.3 g/m2 to 6325.6 ± 24.8 g/m2. (2) Overgrazing resulted in variations in plant–soil systems at three levels. The concentrations of carbon (C) in soil nutrients and plant communities, explained 50.9% of the variation of biomass in plant functional groups; the concentration of soil available nutrients, explained 22.2% of the variation; and the ratio of C and N in shoots and soil total N, explained 11.0% of the variation. (3) The variations in C/N stoichiometry in total soil nutrients and soil microorganisms were 3.4–8.4% and 2.0–3.0%, respectively, and the load of (ammonium-nitrogen (NH4+-N) + nitrate-nitrogen (NO3–-N)) to growth of roots tissue increased from 84.1 ± 5.0 g/m2/(mg/kg) via 99.0 ± 1.3 g/m2/(mg/kg) to 86.1 ± 2.1 g/m2/(mg/kg) at 0 to 40 cm soil in an alpine meadow with grazing intensities rising. Overgrazing would thus increase the deficit of those two kinds of inorganic N on roots growing by 11.4%, 17.7% and 2.4% as grazing rates increased by 93.3%, 126.7% and 213.3%, respectively, compared to a meadow grazed at the lowest rate in the research. We concluded that the alpine meadow changed its distribution of biomass in the plant community, which increased the limiting nutrient deficit on production and altered the concentration and ratio of C and N. This destroyed the original balance to enable the plant community to resist overgrazing. Plot “KH”—a pasture with a grazing intensity next to the lowest one—was the key state in which persistent overgrazing could increase the limiting nutrient load on plant community production, change the dominant position of functional plant groups and species, and lead to plant community degradation. Using ratio of Gramineae to Cyperaceae or Kobresia humilis to K. pygmaea to monitor plant community succession could indirectly estimate these limiting nutrients deficit and balance, and their strategy for incorporating matter into roots and shoots. However how to use those outward characteristics to assess the ecosystem health requires further studies.

Cr (VI) has been considered to be a harmful environmental pollutant due to its toxicity, mobility and strong oxidation. It has become challenging to remove Cr (VI) from wastewater. In this work, a series of supported palladium-based catalysts were synthesized via a facile wet chemical reduction method. Among all the as-synthesized catalysts, Pd/TiO2 (P25) showed the optimized catalytic activity for the reduction of Cr (VI) to Cr (III) using formic acid (HCOOH) as the reductant. More than 99% of K2Cr2O7 (50 mg/L) was reduced completely within 30 min at 25 °C. The structural properties of the Pd/TiO2 catalyst (such as particle size, hydrophilicity and stability) and the synergistic effect of metal and support played significant roles in the reduction of Cr (VI) to Cr (III). Meanwhile, several pivotal parameters such as Cr (VI) concentration, catalyst loading, HCOOH concentration and temperature were investigated in detail. Furthermore, this catalyst was also active for the reduction of nitro compounds with HCOOH as the reductant at room temperature. Finally, the reasonable reaction mechanism of the Pd/TiO2/HCOOH system for the reduction of Cr (VI) to Cr (III) was put forward.

The length of anchorage zone of an anchor bolt affects the distribution of axial force and shear stress therein. Based on a shear-displacement model, the load distribution of anchor bolts in the elastic deformation stage was analysed. Moreover, the mechanical response of threaded steel anchor bolts with different anchorage lengths was explored through pull-out test and numerical simulation. The results showed that axial force and shear stress were negatively exponentially distributed within the anchorage zone of anchor bolts in which there were the maximum axial force and shear stress at the beginning of the anchorage zone. In the elastic deformation stage of the anchorage, the longer the anchorage length, the more uniformly the shear stress was distributed within the anchorage zone and the larger the ultimate shear stress; however, there was a critical anchorage length, which, when exceeded, the ultimate shear stress remained unchanged. The calculation formula for the critical anchorage length was deduced and a reasonable anchorage length determined. The research result provides an important theoretical basis for rapid design of support parameters for anchor bolts.

A floor rock roadway under an oblique straddle working face is a typical dynamic pressure roadway. Under the complex disturbance of excavation engineering works, the roadway often undergoes stress concentration and severe deformation and damage. To solve the problem of surrounding rock stability control for this roadway type, this study considered the East Forth main transport roadway in the floor strata of the 1762(3) working face of the Pansan coal mine. In situ ground pressure monitoring and numerical simulation calculation using the FLAC2D software were carried out. The influence laws of the surrounding rock lithology, the vertical and horizontal distance between the roadway and overlying working face, the positional relationship between the roadway and the overlying working face, and the support form and strength of the rock surrounding an oblique straddle roadway were obtained. Within the range of mining influence, the properties of the rock surrounding the roof and floor were very different, and the deformation of the rock surrounding the two sides exhibited regional difference. The influence range of the mining working face on the rock floor of the roadway was approximately 30–40 m, and that of horizontal mining was approximately 50–60 m. The mining influence on the rock surrounding the side roadway of the working face is large, but the mining influence on the roadway below is small. Using FLAC2D, the stress and displacement characteristics of the rock surrounding the obliquely straddle roadway were compared and analyzed when the bolt support, combined bolt and shed support, and bolt–shotcreting–grouting support were adopted, the proposed support scheme of bolting and shotcreting was successfully applied. The deformation of the rock surrounding the roadway was satisfactorily controlled, and the results were useful as a reference for similar roadway maintenance projects.

Human agricultural activities have resulted in widespread land degradation and soil contamination in the karst areas. However, the effects of reforestation after agricultural abandonment on the mobility risks and contamination of heavy metals have been rarely reported. In the present study, six soil profiles were selected from cropland and abandoned cropland with reforestation in the Puding karst regions of Southwest China. The Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) sequential extraction method was used to evaluate the compositions of different chemical fractions of soil heavy metals, including Fe, Mn, Cr, Zn, Ni, and Cd. The total contents of Cr, Ni, Zn, Cd, and Mn in the croplands were significantly higher than those in the abandoned croplands. For all soils, Cr, Ni, Zn, and Fe were mainly concentrated in the residual fractions (>85%), whereas Mn and Cd were mostly observed in the non-residual fractions (>65%). The non-residual fractions of Cd, Cr, Ni, and Zn in the croplands were higher than those in the abandoned croplands. These results indicated that the content and mobility of soil heavy metals decreased after reforestation. The individual contamination factor (ICF) and risk assessment code (RAC) showed that Cd contributed to considerable contamination of karst soils. The global contamination factor (GCF) and potential ecological risk index (RI) suggested low contamination and ecological risk of the investigated heavy metals in the croplands, moreover they can be further reduced after reforestation.

Soils δ13C and δ15N are now regarded as useful indicators of nitrogen (N) status and dynamics of soil organic carbon (SOC). Numerous studies have explored the effects of various factors on soils δ13C and δ15N in terrestrial ecosystems on different scales, but it remains unclear how co-varying climatic, edaphic and biotic factors independently contribute to the variation in soil δ13C and δ15N in temperate grasslands on a large scale. To answer the above question, a large-scale soil collection was carried out along a vegetation transect across the temperate grasslands of Inner Mongolia. We found that mean annual precipitation (MAP) and mean annual temperature (MAT) do not correlate with soil δ15N along the transect, while soil δ13C linearly decreased with MAP and MAT. Soil δ15N logarithmically increased with concentrations of SOC, total N and total P. By comparison, soil δ13C linearly decreased with SOC, total N and total P. Soil δ15N logarithmically increased with microbial biomass C and microbial biomass N, while soil δ13C linearly decreased with microbial biomass C and microbial biomass N. Plant belowground biomass linearly increased with soil δ15N but decreased with soil δ13C. Soil δ15N decreased with soil δ13C along the transect. Multiple linear regressions showed that biotic and edaphic factors such as microbial biomass C and total N exert more effect on soil δ15N, whereas climatic and edaphic factors such as MAT and total P have more impact on soil δ13C. These findings show that soil C and N cycles in temperate grasslands are, to some extent, decoupled and dominantly controlled by different factors. Further investigations should focus on those ecological processes leading to decoupling of C and N cycles in temperate grassland soils.

Soil acts as a major sink for added nitrogen (N) in forests, but it remains unclear about the capacity of soil to immobilize N under conditions without plant roots and whether added N interacts with ecosystem N to affect N retention. We added 15NH415NO3 to in situ soil columns (with leaching) and leaf litter (without leaching) of two tree species in a subtropical Pinus elliottii plantation. Soil and litter were collected three or eight months after N addition to measure concentrations of indigenous and exogenous N. About 70% of exogenous N was retained in soil three months after N addition, of which 65.9% were in inorganic forms. Eight months after N addition, 16.0% of exogenous N was retained in soil and 9.8%–13.6% was immobilized in litter. N addition increased the mineral release and nitrification of soil indigenous N. Loss of litter indigenous N was also increased by N addition. Our results suggest that N deposition on lands with low root activities or low soil carbon (C) contents may lead to increased N output due to low N immobilization. Moreover, the effects of added N on ecosystem indigenous N may decrease the capacity of soil and litter in N retention.

The fern Dicranopteris dichotoma is an important pioneer species of the understory in Masson pine (Pinus massoniana) forests growing on acidic soils in the subtropical and tropical China. To improve our understanding of the role of D. dichotoma in nitrogen (N) uptake of these forests, a short-term (15)N experiment was conducted at mountain ridge (MR, with low N level) and mountain foot (MF, with high N level). We injected (15)N tracers as (15)NH4, (15)NO3 or (15)N-glycine into the soil surrounding each plant at both MR and MF sites. Three hours after tracer injection, the fern D. dichotoma took up 15NH4+ significantly faster at MF than at MR, but it showed significantly slower uptake of (15)NO3- at MF than at MR. Consequently, (15)NO3- made greater contribution to the total N uptake (50% to the total N uptake) at MR than at MF, but (15)N-glycine only contributed around 11% at both sites. Twenty-four hours after tracer injection, D. dichotoma preferred (15)NH4+ (63%) at MR, whereas it preferred (15)NO3- (47%) at MF. We concluded that the D. dichotoma responds distinctly in its uptake pattern for three available N species over temporal and spatial scales, but mainly relies on inorganic N species in the subtropical forest. This suggests that the fern employs different strategies to acquire available N which depends on N levels and time.

Converting secondary natural forests (SFs) to Chinese fir plantations (CFPs) represents one of the most important (8.9 million ha) land use changes in subtropical China. This study estimated both biomass and soil C stocks in a SF and a CFP that was converted from a SF, to quantify the effects of land use change on ecosystem C stock. After the forest conversion, biomass C in the CFP (73 Mg·ha−1) was significantly lower than that of the SF (114 Mg·ha−1). Soil organic C content and stock decreased with increasing soil depth, and the soil C stock in the 0–10 cm layer accounted for more than one third of the total soil C stock over 0–50 cm, emphasizing the importance of management of the top soil to reduce the soil C loss. Total ecosystem C stock of the SF and the CFP was 318 and 200 Mg·ha−1, respectively, 64% of which was soil C for both stands (205 Mg·ha−1 for the SF and 127 Mg·ha−1 for the CFP). This indicates that land use change from the SF to the CFP significantly decreased ecosystem C stock and highlights the importance of managing soil C.

Litter decomposition is an important source of soil organic matter and nutrients; however, few studies have explored how vegetation patches affect wind-driven litter mobility and accumulation. In this study, we aimed to test the following hypotheses: (1) vegetation patches can reduce litter removal and facilitate litter accumulation, (2) litter mobility results in the heterogeneous redistribution of carbon and nutrients over the land surface, and (3) litter removal rates differ among different litter types (e.g., leaf and stem). Four vegetation patch types and six litter types were used to investigate the impacts of vegetation patches on litter mobility and accumulation. The results show that compared with almost bare ground patches, patches with vegetation cover had significantly higher litter accumulation, with the shrub patch type having the highest accumulation amount. The rate of litter removal due to wind was highest for the almost bare surface type (P4) and lowest for the shrub patch (P1) and Stipa grandis community (P2) types. There were significant differences in the removal rate among the different litter types. These findings indicate that wind-based litter redistribution among bare, S. grandis -dominated, and shrub-dominated patches is at least partially responsible for increasing the spatial heterogeneity of resources on a landscape scale.

Cushion plants are one kind of unique specie in alpine ecosystems. They have a compact perennial cushion structure and play a role in facilitating the survival of other associated species by improving the local micro-environment. They are called "engineers" in the alpine ecosystem and their enhancement of soil nutrient availability is one of the ways of their engineering effect. In this study, Androsace tapete, a species of cushion plant widely distributed on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, was selected to investigate the dynamics of this process during the growing season at elevations of 4500 m and 4800 m on the southern slope of the Nyenchenthanglha mountains in Damxung. The effects of A. tapete on soil nutrient availability were analyzed by comparing the inorganic nitrogen content, net nitrogen mineralization rate and soil enzyme activities during the growing season in the soil under A. tapete and ambient grassland (CK). The results showed three important aspects of this system. (1) Soil nitrate nitrogen and ammonium nitrogen did not show significant differences at 4500 m, but the contents of nitrate nitrogen and inorganic nitrogen under the A. tapete soil significantly increased in the middle of the growing season at 4800 m, with nitrate nitrogen increasing by 56% and inorganic nitrogen increasing by 74.5%. (2) The trend and rate of soil nitrogen mineralization were both changed under A. tapete. In the 4500 m sample site, soil net nitrogen mineralization under A. tapete was negative (nitrogen immobilization) in the middle of the growing season, and the rate was –0.11 µg g–1 d–1, while that of CK was positive (nitrogen mineralization) and the rate was 0.61 µg g–1 d–1; and the difference between them was significant. However, both were positive in the early and late growing season, and the difference did not reach a significant level. In the 4800 m sample site, the soil net nitrogen mineralization under A. tapete was positive in the early part of the growing season, and the rate was 0.07 µg g–1 d–1, while the mineralization for CK was negative, and the rate was –1.17 µg g–1 d–1; and the difference was significant. In the middle of the growing season, both of them were negative, but the soil net nitrogen mineralization rate under A. tapete (–1.95 µg g–1 d–1) was significantly lower than that of CK (–0.02 µg g–1 d–1). At the late stage of the growing season, both of them were negative, and the difference was not significant. (3) Activities of nitrate reductase and nitrite reductase in the soil were significantly increased under A. tapete. Compared to CK at the 4500 m sample site, the activities of nitrate reductase and nitrite reductase under A. tapete were increased by 9.1% and 15.7%, respectively; and they were increased by 22.5% and 16.1%, respectively, at the 4800 m sample site. The activities of these two enzymes were significantly correlated with the dynamics of inorganic nitrogen in the soil. These results indicated that, compared to CK, the cushion plant A. tapete can change the process of soil nitrogen mineralization and the content of inorganic nitrogen, but that change had seasonal dynamics and spatial differences, which implies that this process was affected not only by the engineering of the cushion plant but also by changes in the local environment. Therefore, the engineering effect of cushion plant A. tapete was not constant during the growing seasons, and further studies are needed to clarify this process, especially considering the rapidly changing climate on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
