A pot experiment was carried out to determine the effect of Serendipita indica on the salt response of Lolium multiflorum Lam. Although the salinity decreased the root colonisation of S. indica by 28.34%, successful colonisation of S. indica increased the seed germination rate, fresh weight, leaf relative water content and chlorophyll content by 28.09, 59.01, 38.78 and 28.80%, respectively, compared with uncolonised seedlings. Under salinity, leaf malondialdehyde content, leaf relative electrical conductivity, as well as Na+ content and Na+/K+ ratio in leaves and roots of S. indica-colonised seedlings were decreased by 33.99, 33.31, 63.40% and 47.42, 85.66 and 55.88%, respectively, compared with uncolonised seedlings. Meanwhile, compared with uncolonised seedlings under salinity, the contents of proline in leaves, N, P and K+ in leaves and roots of the S. indica-colonised seedlings were increased by 47.47, 45.69 and 30.05%, and 41.77, 19.51, 19.18 and 155.00%, respectively. These results indicate that S. indica colonisation confers salt tolerance in L. multiflorum seedlings by enhancing osmotic adjustment via actively accumulating proline and K+, increasing the uptake of nutrients such as N and P, and improving Na+/K+ homoeostasis. The study would provide a new idea for the combined application of salt-tolerant plants and symbiotic microorganisms in the ecological restoration of saline-alkali lands.

Water scarcity, over-fertilization, and improper crop management practices severely limit the sustainable cultivation of licorice (Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch) in the arid regions of Xinjiang. To elucidate the impacts of integrated water and fertilizer management on the growth characteristics and bioactive components (glycyrrhizic acid and liquiritin) of four-year-old licorice plants, a comprehensive four-year field experiment was conducted from 2019 to 2022.The experiment included four irrigation levels (W1: 2500 m³/ha, W2: 4000 m³/ha, W3: 5500 m³/ha, W4: 7000 m³/ha) and four fertilization rates (F1: 305 kg/ha, F2: 610 kg/ha, F3: 915 kg/ha, F4: 1220 kg/ha), following a completely randomized design. Results indicated that both irrigation and fertilization significantly influenced plant height, root length, root weight, root diameter, leaf area index, and root-to-shoot ratio. The optimal growth characteristics were observed under the W2F2 treatment. The contents of glycyrrhizic acid and liquiritin varied significantly among different water and fertilizer treatments, with the highest levels observed under the W2F2 treatment. Excessive irrigation (W4) and over-fertilization (F4) led to a decrease in these bioactive components. A comprehensive evaluation of the growth characteristics and bioactive components revealed that the ideal irrigation and fertilization parameters were 4000 m³/ha and 610 kg/ha, respectively. These parameters optimized plant development and bioactive component accumulation while ensuring efficient resource use. This study provides scientific evidence for optimizing irrigation and fertilization strategies to enhance licorice yield in arid regions, thereby supporting sustainable agricultural practices and improving economic benefits.

Current research on the stellate ganglion (SG) has shifted from merely understanding its role as a collection of neurons to recognizing its importance in immune regulation. As part of the autonomic nervous system (ANS), the SG plays a crucial role in regulating cardiovascular function, particularly cardiac sympathetic nerve activity. Abnormal SG function can lead to disordered cardiac electrical activity, which in turn affects heart rhythm stability. Studies have shown that excessive activity of the SG is closely related to the occurrence of arrhythmias, especially in the context of inflammation. Abnormal activity of the SG may trigger excessive excitation of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) through neuroimmune mechanisms, thereby increasing the risk of arrhythmias. Simultaneously, the inflammatory response of the SG further aggravates this process, forming a vicious cycle. However, the causal relationship between SG, inflammation, and arrhythmias has not yet been fully clarified. Therefore, this article deeply explores the key role of the SG in arrhythmias and its complex relationship with inflammation, providing relevant clinical evidence. It indicates that interventions targeting SG function and inflammatory responses have potential in preventing and treating inflammation-related arrhythmias, offering a new perspective for cardiovascular disease treatment strategies.

IntroductionOur objective was to explore the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen in the treatment of sudden sensorineural hearing loss by conducting an umbrella review of all existing evidence.MethodsWe conducted an umbrella review, searching for related articles in the PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Scopus databases. The search period covered from the inception of each database until April 2024. We extracted authors, country of publication, time of publication, number of included studies and participants, interventions, summary of results, P-values, I2, relative risk (95% CI), and outcome measures. The methodological quality, evidence quality, and overlap rate of the included articles were assessed using AMSTAR 2, GRADE, and OVErviews (GROOVE).ResultsMethodological quality was assessed using AMSTAR 2. Of the nine included articles, two were assessed as “high,” three as “moderate,” two as “low,” and the remaining two as “very low.” The quality of evidence was assessed using the GRADE system. It was found that the quality of evidence in most of the studies was unsatisfactory. It was found that there was a slight overlap among the included articles. Six studies reported positive results (OR 1.37; 95% CI, 1.17–1.61; P = 0.04), with high heterogeneity observed (I2 = 63%). Egger's test indicated bias (P = 0.000101). Three studies reported negative results (MD 1.49; 95% CI, −0.32 to 3.29; P = 0.43; I2 = 0%), with no significant bias detected (P = 0.106) according to Egger's test.ConclusionHBO therapy is shown to be an effective treatment for SSNHL with fewer side effects. However, the methodological quality and evidence of the systematic reviews and meta-analysis included in this study were generally low. Abstract Objective The objective of this study was to establish a methodology for determining carboxymethyl lysine (CML) and carboxyethyl lysine (CEL) concentrations in human plasma using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The test results were also used for clinical aging research. Methods Human plasma samples were incubated with aqueous perfluorovaleric acid (NFPA), succeeded by precipitation utilizing trichloroacetic acid, hydrolysis facilitated by hydrochloric acid, nitrogen drying, and ultimate re-dissolution utilizing NFPA, followed by filtration. Cotinine-D3 was added as an internal standard. The separation was performed on an Agela Venusil ASB C18 column (50 mm × 4.6 mm, 5 μm) with a 5 mmol/L NFPA and acetonitrile/water of 60:40 (v/v) containing 0.15% formic acid. The multiple reaction monitoring mode was used for detecting CML, CEL, and cotinine-D3, with ion pairs m/z 205.2 > 84.1 (for quantitative) and m/z 205.2 > m/z 130.0 for CML, m/z 219.1 > 84.1 (for quantitative) and m/z 219.1 > m/z 130.1 for CEL, and m/z 180.1 > 80.1 for cotinine-D3, respectively. Results The separation of CML and CEL was accomplished within a total analysis time of 6 minutes. The retention times of CML, CEL, and cotinine-D3 were 3.43 minutes, 3.46 minutes, and 4.50 minutes, respectively. The assay exhibited linearity in the concentration range of 0.025–1.500 μmol/L, with a lower limit of quantification of 0.025 μmol/L for both compounds. The relative standard deviations of intra-day and inter-day were both below 9%, and the relative errors were both within the range of ±4%. The average recoveries were 94.24% for CML and 97.89% for CEL. Conclusion The results indicate that the developed methodology is fast, highly sensitive, highly specific, reproducible, and suitable for the rapid detection of CML and CEL in clinical human plasma samples. The outcomes of the clinical research project on aging underscored the important indicative significance of these two indicators for research on human aging.

Abstract The Jiali-Chayu fault, situated on the eastern side of the eastern Himalayan syntaxis, is the southeastern margin of the large strike-slip fault zone of the Jiali Fault. The study of the distribution and activity within this fault zone is imperative for a comprehensive understanding of the tectonic movement patterns in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau. Previous studies have established that the kinematic characteristic of the Jiali-Chayu fault diverges significantly from that of other segments within the Jiali fault. Nonetheless, the current tectonic characteristics, including the slip sense, slip rate, and geometric deformation of this fault, are still not well resolved, leading to divergent interpretations regarding its contemporary activity intensity. This paper introduced an optimized time-series InSAR method with phase compensation designed for regions characterized by low coherence and exhibiting slow deformation. Using Sentinel-1 SAR data from both ascending and descending orbits spanning the period between 2017 and 2022, we successfully derived deformation rates for the middle part of the Jiali-Chayu fault at a spatial resolution of 150 m. The slip and dip rates of active faults are determined by considering the fault movement rates from two different observation angles, in conjunction with strike angle and the assumed dip angle of the fault. The results show that the deformation rates of the three branches are very different, with F2-1 and F2-2 exhibiting notable activity, while other areas exhibit relatively weaker activity. The strike-slip rates for F2-1 and F2-2 faults range between 3.6 and 5.3 mm/a and 3.05 to 5.13 mm/a, respectively, while their respective dip-slip rates fall within the range of 1.1–2.7 mm/a and 2.99–5.02 mm/a. In accordance with the fault slip directions, we classify the F2-1 fault as a sinistral (left-lateral) strike-slip fault and the F2-2 fault as a dextral (right-lateral) strike-slip fault. This study addresses a gap in remote sensing methods for detecting active fault activity in this region, providing a systematic foundation for identifying weak activity characteristics within the fault zone. ObjectiveThe study aims to explore the driving forces behind physical activity engagement among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, focusing on motivation, opportunity, and capability.DesignA phenomenological qualitative study applied the motivation, opportunity, and capability model, conducted in two respiratory units of a Chinese university hospital.MethodsParticipants, selected by age, gender, and illness duration, included inpatients during the interview sessions and those recently discharged within six months. One-on-one semi-structured interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed by the Colaizzi seven-step method.ResultsSeventeen participants diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease for over one year aged between 66 (range: 42-96) participated. Three major themes were identified: Inspiring participation motivation-transitioning from recognizing significance to habit formation; Offering participation opportunities-reiterating demand for personalized strategies and ideal environmental settings; Enhancing participation capability-addressing strategies for overcoming fears, setting goals, ensuring safety, and adjusting activity levels.ConclusionsThis research underscores the vital role of inspiring participation motivation, offering opportunities, and enhancing the capability for participation in effective engagement. Advocating increased attention from healthcare departments, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, improving activity guidance and counseling effectiveness, and considering individual preferences can significantly benefit those patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who hesitate or are unable to participate in physical activities, thereby increasing the dose of non-leisure time physical activity.

The increasing worldwide demand for traditional herbs has been met by growing cultivated herbs. It is undoubtedly very important to seek a reasonable cultivation mode for the yield, quality and long-term production stability of traditional herbs. Glycyrrhiza is a commercial medicinal crop that is widely cultivated with high water and fertilizer application, in the arid areas of northwest China. Rational irrigation and fertilizer application are key factors for successful crop management. Studying water–fertilizer coupling effects in a drip irrigation system is critical for sustainable agricultural development in arid areas, such as that of Xinjiang in China, to find out the optimized water and fertilizer management. Therefore, a four-year field experiment was conducted to find out how the combination of four levels of irrigation quotas and four levels of fertilizer amounts would affect the different parts liquiritin contents of the licorice, data on different parts liquiritin contents of the licorice were collected from individual glycyrrhizin for each treatment during 2019 to 2022. The application of fertilizer significantly increased the liquiritin contents of the licorice under the same irrigation conditions. However, the liquiritin contents of the licorice were reduced in the excess water treatments (W4F1 and W4F4) and in the excess fertilizer treatments (W1F4 and W4F4) in contrast to the optimum W2F2 treatment. These results indicate that the combination of water and fertilizer management can potentially increase the accumulation the liquiritin contents of the licorice, which can be used to promote the cultivation of Glycyrrhiza.

AbstractLandslide susceptibility mapping (LSM) comprehensively evaluates the spatial probability of landslide occurrence by using different environmental factors. However, most of the evaluation methods ignore the dynamic characteristic factors of landslides, which makes it difficult to obtain reliable prediction results. Taking the upper reaches of the Jinsha River as the study area, this article introduces the deformation data into the landslide characteristic model and proposes an improved landslide susceptibility evaluation method. Four kinds of landslide susceptibility machine learning models were constructed by collecting 20 landslide related factors. The prediction accuracy of machine learning models is compared, and the performance of different models and the improvement of model performance by deformation information are evaluated. The results show that the performance of Random Forest and XGBoost model is better than SVM and logistic regression model. The prediction accuracy of Random Forest and XGBoost model is improved obviously after InSAR deformation is introduced. 96.9 and 93.19% of landslide areas were reasonably classified as high or very high risk levels. Compared with the calculation result of traditional model, the proportion of high and very high risk pixels in landslide area is increased by 2.97 and 1.13%, respectively. In addition, the percentage of high and very high risk areas in the susceptibility evaluation area increased from 15.45 to 16.23% and 18.73 to 21.89%, respectively. The accuracy of Random Forest and XGBoost models increased from 0.793 to 0.878 and 0.776 to 0.812, respectively, and the AUC increased by 0.9 and 1.7%, respectively. The SHAP and traditional feature importance analysis reveals that rainfall, aspect, temperature and NDVI are the main influencing factors of landslide in the upper reaches of the Jinsha River.

High belite sulphoaluminate cement (HBSC) has shown great potential as new lower CO2 footprint cementitious material. It makes sense to improve the hydrophobic property of HBSC to obtain high durability performance. In this paper, nontoxic short carbon chain lauric acid (LA) is used to match the early strength characteristic of HBSC to prepare fast-setting and eco-friendly LA-modified HBSC mortar (M-HBSCM). Sands modified with LA provide low surface energy for an integral hydrophobic effect. M-HBSCM exhibits superhydrophobicity even after hammering to expose the fractured internal structure, with a contact angle of 153.2°. And it shows outstanding self-cleaning property against contaminants such as sand and wet mud and a reduction in water absorption to around 23% of the ordinary HBSCM (O-HBSCM). The fabricated M-HBSCM has fast-setting property with an initial setting time of 29 min and a final setting time of 36 min. The abrasion test displays that the scratched area remains well superhydrophobic with high mechanical robustness when the droplets roll off on the inclined surface. Field-emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) indicates that M-HBSCM contains more pores and coarser hydration products. The system of calcium alumina and pores exhibits a distinct hierarchical structure, providing the multilevel roughness required for the superhydrophobic surface. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer indicates that low surface energy functional groups have been successfully grafted onto M-HBSCM. The superhydrophobic concrete has good mechanical robustness, corrosion resistance, and fast-setting property, which can meet the demands of grouting reinforcement projects, the repair of various concrete structures, corrosion protection of marine structures and other projects.

This study evaluated the effects of maternal selenium-enriched yeast (SeY) supplementation during late gestation and lactation on sow performance, transfer of selenium (Se) and redox status, and gut microbiota community, as well as on the gut health of offspring. Seventy pregnant sows on day 85 of gestation were randomly allocated to the following two treatments: (1) sows who were fed a basal diet (basal diet contained 0.3 mg/kg Se as Na2SeO3, n = 35); (2) and sows who were fed a SeY-supplemented diet (basal diet with 0.2 mg/kg Se as SeY, n = 35). The offspring piglets were only cross-fostered within the group on day 3 of lactation (L3) according to the pig farm epidemic prevention policy. The plasma, milk, and feces samples from 10 sows, as well as plasma and intestinal samples per treatment, were collected on L1 and L21, respectively. Our results showed that maternal SeY supplementation increased the first week average weight and ADG of piglets (p < 0.05). Compared with the CON group, the SeY supplementation increased the Se content in the plasma and milk of sows and the plasma of piglets on L1 and L21 (p < 0.05). In addition, in sows, the levels of fat in the milk on L21, the level of IgA, T-AOC, and GSH-Px in the plasma on L21, and the level of T-AOC and GSH-Px in the colostrum were increased, while the MDA content was decreased in the plasma on L1 and in the colostrum and milk on L14 (p < 0.05). In the piglet plasma, the levels of IgA on L1 and L21, GSH-Px on L1, and GSH on L21 were increased, while the MDA content was decreased on L1 (p < 0.05). Maternal SeY supplementation up-regulated the small intestinal protein abundances of MUC1, E-cadherin, ZO-1, occludin, and claudin and activated the Nrf2/Keap1 signaling pathway in weaned offspring piglets. The 16S rRNA sequencing results showed that fecal microbiota had distinct separations during lactation, and the relative abundances of unclassified_f_Lachnospiraceae, Prevotaceae_UCG-001, and Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group were increased on L1. Collectively, the current findings suggest that maternal SeY supplementation during late gestation and lactation could improve the piglet’s growth performance, Se status, antioxidant capacity and immunoglobulins transfer at the first week of lactation, as well as alter the fecal microbiota composition by increasing antioxidative-related and SCFA-producing microbiota in sows. These changes contributed to enhancing the small intestinal barrier function and activating the Nrf2/Keap1 pathway in offspring.

The task of Point-of-Interest (POI) recommendation is to recommend the next interest locations for users. Gated Graph Neural Network (GGNN) has been proved to be effective on POI recommendation tasks. However, existing GGNN solutions rarely consider the spatiotemporal information between nodes in the sequence graph, which is essential for modeling user check-in behaviors in next POI recommendation. In this paper, we propose an attention-based spatiotemporal gated graph neural network model (ATST-GGNN) for next POI recommendation. Firstly, the user’s check-in sequence is represented as a graph structure. Secondly, we use spatiotemporal context information to dynamically update nodes in the sequence graph, and obtain the complex transfer relationships between the check-ins. Thirdly, each session is then represented as the composition of the long and short preference using an attention network. However, current short preference fails to model union-level sequential patterns, we improve the local embedding representation of graph nodes by window pooling method, as well as the global embedding representation of graph nodes by integrating it into attention mechanism. Finally, the objective function is constructed by cross entropy and the model parameters are learned. The experimental results show that the precision rate and mean reciprocal ranking of ATST-GGNN method are greatly improved compared with the state-of-art methods. It has good application prospect.

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) can promote plant growth and induce systemic resistance to biological and abiotic stresses. However, do all PGPR have significant effects in arid environments, and which PGPR have the most optimal effects? This study used a pot experiment to investigate the effects of inoculation with two different PGPR on the physiological and ecological characteristics of walnut (Juglans regia) seedlings under drought stress: Bacillus subtilis GE1, which secretes protease only, and Pseudomonas brassicacearum X123, which secretes protease and indoleacetic acid (IAA). The leaves inoculated with X123 under drought stress had higher net photosynthetic rate (Pn), transpiration rate (Tr), and stomatal conductance (gs), especially stomatal length and stomatal width, compared to GE1 inoculation under drought stress. Moreover, inoculation with X123 significantly increased the leaf superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activities by 20.84% and 12.41%, respectively, and the gibberellin (GA) and zeatin (ZT) contents by 72.07% and 19.17%, respectively, whereas the leaf soluble sugar and soluble protein contents significantly decreased compared with GE1 inoculation. These results indicated that the effects of GE1 inoculation on the physiological and ecological characteristics of walnut seedling leaves were significantly weaker in comparison with X123 inoculation as a result of its functional characteristics. The application of different PGPR on the drought tolerance of J. regia showed significant differences. Therefore, the selection of appropriate PGPR is key to achieving positive treatment effects under drought conditions.

Background: Myofibroblast (MF) activation is the key event of irreversible renal interstitial fibrosis. Anoikis resistance is the hallmark of active MFs, which is conferred by continuous activation of the phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt) pathway. Our previous study found that tumor-suppressing STF cDNA 3 (TSSC3) enhances the sensitivity of cells to anoikis via the PI3K/Akt pathway. Therefore, we hypothesized that TSSC3 might suppress renal interstitial fibrosis by inducing anoikis via the PI3K/Akt pathway. Methods: Cell anoikis was induced by the exogenous addition of RGD-containing peptides or by culturing cells in suspension. MFs were established by stimulating HK-2 renal tubular epithelial cells with transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1). Lentivirus vectors were to construct a TSSC3 overexpression cell model. The effects of TSSC3 on the anoikis, growth, migration, invasion, and contraction of MFs were determined using annexin V-fluorescein isothiocyanate assays, cell counting kit-8 assays, wound healing migration assays, matrigel invasion assays, and collagen-based contraction assays. Results: The results demonstrated that TGF-β1, simultaneous with the induction of MF differentiation, confers significant protection against anoikis-induced cell death, which could be partly reversed by treatment with the PI3K/Akt pathway inhibitor, LY294002. Moreover, overexpression of TSSC3 obviously impaired cell growth, cell migration, cell invasion, contraction, and anoikis resistance of MFs, and decreased the activity of the PI3K/Akt pathway and the production of extracellular matrix molecules, all of which could be attenuated by treatment with the PI3K/Akt pathway activator, 740Y-P. Taken together, this study suggested that TSSC3 attenuates the anoikis resistance and profibrogenic ability of TGF-β1-induced MF by regulating the PI3K-Akt pathway. Conclusion: These findings provide a biological basis for further exploration of the therapeutic significance of targeting MF via TSSC3 in renal interstitial fibrosis.

Abstract Comparative evaluations were conducted to assess the effects of different pH levels, NaCl-induced salt stress, and PEG-induced drought stress on the mycelial growth of Xerocomus badius. The results showed that X. badius mycelium grew well at a wide pH range of 5.00 ~ 9.00. Although the mycelium remained viable, mycelial growth of X. badius was significantly inhibited with increasing salt and drought stresses. Furthermore, a soilless experiment in Petri dishes was performed to investigate the potential of X. badius to induce beneficial effects on seed germination and seedling growth of annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) under salt and drought stresses. Seed priming with X. badius enhanced the seedling growth of L. multiflorum Lam. under NaCl-induced salt stress and PEG-induced drought stress. However, X. badius did not significantly improve the seed germination under non-stress and mild stress conditions. It suggested that X. badius inoculation with seeds was not essential for seed germination under non-stress and mild stress conditions, but contributed highly to seedling growth under severe stress conditions. Therefore, seed priming with X. badius on ryegrass could be an effective approach to enhance plant tolerance against drought and salt stresses. X. badius could be a good candidate for the inoculation of ectomycorrhizal plants cultivation programs in mild saline and semiarid areas.

The immature immune system at birth and environmental stress increase the risk of infection in nursing pigs. Severe infection subsequently induces intestinal and respiratory diseases and even cause death of pigs. The nutritional and physiological conditions of sows directly affect the growth, development and disease resistance of the fetus and newborn. Many studies have shown that providing sows with nutrients such as functional oligosaccharides, oils, antioxidants, and trace elements could regulate immunity and the inflammatory response of piglets. Here, we reviewed the positive effects of certain nutrients on milk quality, immunoglobulin inflammatory response, oxidative stress, and intestinal microflora of sows, and further discuss the effects of these nutrients on immunity and the inflammatory response in the offspring.

Graphene films made by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) are a popular method to modify sensors by virtue of large-scale and reproducibility, but suffer from various surface contamination and structural defects induced during transfer procedures. In-situ growth of graphene films is proposed in this review article to improve sensing performance. Root causes of the surface contamination and structural defects are revealed with several common transfer methods. In-situ approaches are introduced and compared, growing graphene films with clean surfaces and few defects. This allows graphene film to display superior sensing performance for sensor applications. This work may reasonably be expected to offer a good avenue for synthesis of graphene films applicable for sensing applications.

Many ancient landslides in the upper reaches of the Jinsha River seriously threaten the safety of residents on both sides of the river. The river erosion and groundwater infiltration have greatly reduced the stability of the ancient landslides along the Jinsha River and revived many large landslides. Studying their deformation characteristics and mechanisms and predicting possible failure processes are significant to the safety of residents and hydropower projects. We used SBAS-InSAR and three-dimensional decomposition techniques in our study. Our results showed that the trailing edge and middle part of the landslide have rapidly deformed. The maximum vertical annual displacement rate was 12 cm/a period from July 2017 to July 2019. Correlation analysis showed that creep deformation is closely related to the river damming of the Baige landslide events and that the rising river level was an important factor in the resurrection and accelerated destruction of the Xiaomojiu landslide. As a result, we predicted the possible failure process of the Xiaomojiu landslide, which might have lasted 80 s and eventually formed a landslide deposit with a height of about 150 m, a length of approximately 1500 m, and an average width of 450 m. Our results provide data references for displacement monitoring and instability risk simulation of large landslides along the Jinsha River.

The rock mass along the Jinsha River is relatively broken under complex geological action. Many ancient landslides were distributed along the Jinsha River in Gongjue County, which is very dangerous under the action of gravity, tectonic stress and river erosion. Efficient and accurate identification and monitoring of landslides is important for disaster monitoring and early warning. Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) technology has been proved to be an effective technology for landslide hazard identification and mapping. However, great uncertainty inevitably exists due to the single deformation observation method, resulting in wrong judgment during the process of landslide detection. Therefore, to address the uncertainties arising from single observations, a cross-comparison method is put forward using SBAS-InSAR (small baseline subset InSAR) and PS-InSAR (permanent scatterers InSAR) technology. Comparative analysis of the spatial complementarity of interference points and temporal deformation refined the deformation characteristics and verified the reliability of the InSAR results, aiding in the comprehensive identification and further mapping of landslides. Landslides along the Jinsha River in Gongjue County were studied in this paper. Firstly, 14 landslides with a total area of 20 km2 were identified by using two time-series InSAR methods. Then, the deformation characteristics of these landslides were validated by UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) images, multiresource remote sensing data and field investigation. Further, the precipitation data were introduced to analyze the temporal deformation characteristics of two large landslides. Lastly, the influence of fault activity on landslide formation is further discussed. Our results demonstrate that the cross-comparison of the time-series InSAR method can effectively verify the accuracy of landslide identification.

This work aimed to fabricate a boron-doped diamond film electrode for detecting trace amounts of lead in drinking water so as to safeguard it for the public. Available detectors suffer from high costs and complex analytical processes, and commonly used electrodes for electrochemical detectors are subject to a short life, poor stability, and secondary pollution during usage. In this work, a boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode was prepared on a porous titanium substrate, and the microstructure and electrochemical properties of the BDD electrode were systematically studied. Moreover, the stripping parameters were optimized to obtain a better signal response and determine the detection index. As a result, diamond particles were closely arranged on the surface of the BDD electrode with good phase quality. The electrode showed high electrochemical activity, specific surface area, and low charge transfer resistance, which can accelerate the stripping reaction process of Pb2+. The BDD electrode presented a low detection limit of 2.62 ppb for Pb2+ under an optimized parameter set with an enrichment time of 150 s and a scanning frequency of 50 Hz. The BDD electrode also has good anti-interference ability. The designed BDD electrode is expected to offer a reliable solution for the dilemma of the availability of metal electrodes and exhibits a good application prospect in the trace monitoring of Pb2+ content in drinking water.

Abstract Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are beneficial bacteria that survive within the range of plant rhizosphere and can promote plant growth. The effects of PGPR in promoting plant growth, activating soil nutrients, reducing fertilizer application, and improving the resistance of plant inducible system have been widely investigated. However, few studies have investigated PGPR as elicitors of tolerance to abiotic stresses, especially drought stress. In this study, the effects of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus X128 on the photosynthetic rate (P n), stomatal conductance (G s), intracellular CO2 concentration (C i), and total chlorophyll content [Chl(a+b)] of Sambucus williamsii Hance seedling leaves under moderate drought stress and drought-rewatering conditions were determined. Compared with those of uninoculated seedlings, the average P n values during the entire drought stress of inoculated seedlings increased by 12.99%. As the drought duration was lengthened, C i of uninoculated leaves continued to increase after rapidly declining, whereas G s continuously decreased. Furthermore, their photosynthetic properties were simultaneously restricted by stomatal and non-stomatal factors. After X128 inoculation, C i and G s of S. williamsii Hance leaves continued to decrease, and their photosynthetic properties were mainly restricted by stomatal factors. At the end of the drought stress, water stress reduced [Chl(a + b)] of S. williamsii Hance leaves by 13.49%. However, X128 inoculation decreased this deficit to only 7.39%. After water supply was recovered, P n, G s , and [Chl(a+b)] in uninoculated leaves were reduced by 14.23%, 12.02%, and 5.86%, respectively, relative to those under well-watered conditions. However, C i increased by 6.48%. Compared with those of uninoculated seedlings, P n, G s , and [Chl(a+b)] in X128-inoculated seedlings were increased by 9.83%, 9.30%, and 6.85%, respectively. Therefore, the inoculation of X128 under arid environments can mitigate the reduction of chlorophyll, delay the restriction caused by non-stomatal factors to P n in plant leaves under water stress, and can be more conducive to the recovery of photosynthetic functions of leaves after water supply is recovered.

Abstract In this study, a pot experiment was carried out in greenhouse to investigate the potentials of Xerocomus badius and Serendipita indica to penetrate and colonize roots of ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and to induce beneficial effects on seed germination and seedling growth. The results showed that X. badius and S. indica successfully colonized in the root system of L. multiflorum seedlings and the root colonization rate was 72.65% and 88.42%, respectively. By microscopy, the hyphae, chlamydospores and spores produced by S. indica were observed in roots cortex of L. multiflorum seedlings. In comparison with the non-inoculated seedlings, seedlings inoculated with X. badius and S. indica showed significant increase in growth parameters with plant height, basal diameter, biomass accumulation, relative growth rate, leaf relative water content and chlorophyll content. Also, we found that seedlings inoculated with S. indica exhibited a greater growth-promotion as compared with X. badius-inoculated seedlings. No significant influence of the two fungus application has been observed with respect to seed germination. It suggested that well establishments of mutualistic symbiosis between L. multiflorum and X. badius or S. indica were not so essential to seed germination but contributed highly to the survival and growth of the seedlings.

The development of landslide hazards is spatially scattered, temporally random, and poorly characterized. Given the advantages of the large spatial scale and high sensitivity of InSAR observations, InSAR is becoming one of the main techniques for active landslide identification. The difficult problem is how to quickly extract landslide information from extensive InSAR image data. Since the instance segmentation model (Mask R-CNN) in deep learning can provide highly robust target recognition, we select the landslide-prone eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau as a specific test area. Introducing and optimizing this model achieves high-speed and accurate recognition of InSAR observations. First, the InSAR patch landslide instance segmentation dataset (SLD) is established by developing a common object in context (COCO) annotation format conversion code based on InSAR observations. The Mask R-CNN+++ is found by adding three functions of the ResNext module to increase the fineness of the network segmentation results and enhance the noise resistance of the model, the DCB (deformable convolutional block) to improve the feature extraction ability of the network for geometric morphological changes of landslide patches, and an attention mechanism to selectively enhance usefully and suppress features less valuable to the native Mask R-CNN network. The model achieves 92.94% accuracy on the test set, and the active landslide recognition speed based on this model under ordinary computer hardware conditions is 72.3 km2/s. The overall characteristics of the results of this study show that the optimized model effectively enhances the perceptibility of image morphological changes, thereby resulting in smoother recognition boundaries and further improvement of the generalization ability of segmentation detection. This result is expected to serve to identify and monitor active landslides in complex surface conditions on a large spatial scale. Moreover, active landslides of different geometric features, motion patterns, and intensities are expected to be further segmented.

The Aral Sea basin is the most active source of salt-dust storms in the central Asian region, while its exposed bottom is acting as a “distributer” of salts and chemicals over the adjoining areas. In this study, the Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory Model (HYSPLIT-4) is used to identify the trajectories of air parcels from the dried bottom of the Aral Sea region (45.40° N, 61.30° E) that are potentially containing salt-dust and their probability of influencing the downwind area in the period of 2016–2020. The frequency of air parcel trajectory was mapped for six levels: 100, 300, 500, 1000, 2000, and 3000 m agl. The trajectories were categorized by k-means clustering into four clusters that are named by their direction of movement as follows: Cluster 1: E category, Cluster 2: NE category, Cluster 3: W category, and the Cluster 4: S category. The 72 h of forward trajectories showed that salt-dust storms starting from the dried bottom of the Aral Sea had the highest probability of affecting the northeastern region e.g., Siberian Plain, followed by the southern region e.g., Iran Plateau. Total number of trajectories within these two clusters (NE and S) accounts for 90% (or 413 days) of trajectories in examined days. The main area of influence of salt-dust is close to the source area. The potential transport distance of salt-dust particles increases with the height of the starting point. The surface wind, which results from the changes of the Siberian High (SH), has a major role in shaping the surface atmospheric circulation which determines the transport pathway of salt-dust particles over the Aral Sea region. The results of this study could be useful to forecast the potential occurrence of salt-dust storms in downwind affected areas and would also be helpful to understand the possible causes of salt-dust storms which can provide the scientific basis for mitigation of the negative impact of salt-dust storms on the environment and human health. Further research should be conducted by using monitoring data to confirm the deposition of dust and salt particles in those areas mapped by our study.

The issue of how to alleviate the negative effects imposed by water stress is an interesting problem. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) colonize the rhizosphere of plants and are known to promote the growth of crops. However, there are few studies characterizing the physiological response of plants to drought stress after PGPR inoculation. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of different PGPRs in arid environments and then investigated the effects of PGPR inoculation under drought stress on the physiological characteristics and growth of North China red elder (Sambucus williamsii) nursery container seedlings. The viable count of different PGPRs under drought stress varies widely, and the drought tolerance of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus X128 was significantly higher than that of other PGPRs. In comparison with non-inoculation, inoculation with X128 in an arid environment significantly increased stomatal conductance and mitigated the inhibition of net photosynthetic rate caused by drought stress; this mitigating effect of inoculation is enhanced as the level of drought stress increases. Relative to non-inoculated seedlings, cytokinin levels in the leaves increased by 91.17% under severe drought stress conditions in inoculated seedlings. However, X128 inoculation decreased this deficit to only 44.54%. Compared with non-inoculated seedlings, the relative water content of inoculated seedlings under severe drought stress increased by 15.06%, however the relative conductivity decreased by 12.48%. Consequently, X128 could increase dry matter accumulation of S. williamsii regardless of watering status, indicative of the greater benefits of PGPR on shoot growth than root. Therefore, inoculation of A. calcoaceticus X128 under drought conditions play a significant role for alleviating the negative effects imposed by water stress and promoting plant growth.

Efficient and accurate cement hydration simulation is an important issue for predicting and analyzing concrete’s performance evolution. A large number of models have been proposed to describe cement hydration. Some models can simulate the test results with high accuracy by constructing reasonable functions, but they are based on mathematical regression and lack of physical background and prediction ability. Other models, such as the famous HYMOSTRUC model and CEMHYD3D model, can predict the hydration rate and microstructure evolution of cement based on its initial microstructure. However, this kind of prediction model also has some limitations, such as the inability to fully consider the properties of cement slurry, or being too complicated for use in finite element analysis (FEA). In this study, the hydration mechanisms of the main minerals in Portland cement (PC) are expounded, and the corresponding hydration model is built. Firstly, a modified particle hydration model of tricalcium silicate (C3S) and alite is proposed based on the moisture diffusion theory and the calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) barrier layer hypothesis, which can predict the hydration degree of C3S and alite throughout the age. Taking the hydration model of C3S as a reference, the hydration model of dicalcium silicate (C2S) is established, and the synergistic hydration effect of C3S and C2S is calibrated by analyzing the published test results. The hydration model of tricalcium aluminate(C3A)-gypsum system is then designed by combining the theory of dissolution and diffusion. This model can reflect the hydration characteristics of C3A in different stages, and quantify the response of the hydration process of C3A to different gypsum content, water–cement ratio, and particle size distribution. Finally, several correction coefficients are introduced into the hydration model of the main mineral, to consider the synergistic hydration effect among the minerals to some extent and realize the prediction of the hydration of PC.

Pipe cooling systems are among the potentially effective measures to control the temperature of mass concrete. However, if not properly controlled, thermal cracking in concrete, especially near water pipes, might occur, as experienced in many mass concrete structures. In this paper, a new numerical approach to simulate thermal cracking based on particle flow code is used to shed more light onto the process of thermal crack propagation and the effect of thermal cracks on thermal fields. Key details of the simulation, including the procedure of obtaining thermal and mechanical properties of particles, are presented. Importantly, a heat flow boundary based on an analytical solution is proposed and used in particle flow code in two dimensions to simulate the effect of pipe cooling. The simulation results are in good agreement with the monitored temperature data and observations on cored specimens from a real concrete gravity dam, giving confidence to the appropriateness of the adopted simulation. The simulated results also clearly demonstrate why thermal cracks occur and how they propagate, as well as the influence of such cracks on thermal fields.

This work is a contrastive investigation of numerical simulations to improve the comprehension of thermo-structural coupled phenomena of mass concrete structures during construction. The finite element (FE) analysis of thermo-structural behaviors is used to investigate the applicability of supersulfated cement (SSC) in mass concrete structures. A multi-scale framework based on a homogenization scheme is adopted in the parameter studies to describe the nonlinear concrete behaviors. Based on the experimental data of hydration heat evolution rate and quantity of SSC and fly ash Portland cement, the hydration properties of various cements are studied. Simulations are run on a concrete dam section with a conventional method and a chemo-thermo-mechanical coupled method. The results show that SSC is more suitable for mass concrete structures from the standpoint of temperature control and crack prevention.

A pot experiment was carried out to determine the effect of Serendipita indica on the salt response of Lolium multiflorum Lam. Although the salinity decreased the root colonisation of S. indica by 28.34%, successful colonisation of S. indica increased the seed germination rate, fresh weight, leaf relative water content and chlorophyll content by 28.09, 59.01, 38.78 and 28.80%, respectively, compared with uncolonised seedlings. Under salinity, leaf malondialdehyde content, leaf relative electrical conductivity, as well as Na+ content and Na+/K+ ratio in leaves and roots of S. indica-colonised seedlings were decreased by 33.99, 33.31, 63.40% and 47.42, 85.66 and 55.88%, respectively, compared with uncolonised seedlings. Meanwhile, compared with uncolonised seedlings under salinity, the contents of proline in leaves, N, P and K+ in leaves and roots of the S. indica-colonised seedlings were increased by 47.47, 45.69 and 30.05%, and 41.77, 19.51, 19.18 and 155.00%, respectively. These results indicate that S. indica colonisation confers salt tolerance in L. multiflorum seedlings by enhancing osmotic adjustment via actively accumulating proline and K+, increasing the uptake of nutrients such as N and P, and improving Na+/K+ homoeostasis. The study would provide a new idea for the combined application of salt-tolerant plants and symbiotic microorganisms in the ecological restoration of saline-alkali lands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Phosphorus (P) is the main limiting nutrient in agriculture. Most of the P fertilizers applied to the soil remain ineffective because of the weak movement and transfer of P in the soil. Current agricultural production requires large amounts of P fertilizers, leading to the accumulation of residual P in the soil and serious ecological problems. Fixation of P is a vital reason for limited fertilizer effectiveness. Therefore, improving soil P effectiveness is the key to reducing soil P accumulation. This study explored the effects of different water-soluble P fertilizers on maize yield and economic benefits by comparing the relationships between soil P distribution and P absorption and utilization of maize in calcareous soil of Xinjiang province in China. The main results indicated that (1) the drip application of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and urea phosphate (UP) was more beneficial for increasing the total P content in the deep soil layer; the drip application of APP was beneficial in increasing the available P content of the deep soil layer. (2) Dripping acid fertilizer was more conducive to reducing soil acidity and alkalinity (pH). (3) The application of different P fertilizers favoured the accumulation of P in all organs of maize, among which APP and UP were the most effective since they increased accumulation by 75.8% and 60.4% (at the flowering stage) and 98.2% and 62.3% (at the maturity stage), respectively, compared with CK (without P fertilizer). (4) pH was the main factor affecting P uptake and transformation, and the drip application of P fertilizer had the most significant effect on pH. (5) The application of different water-soluble P fertilizers increased maize yield and economic benefits. Among the five water-soluble P fertilizers selected in this study, APP had the greatest economic benefits, followed by UP and monoammonium phosphate (MAP); they increased yields by 31.6%, 24.5%, and 22.0%, respectively, compared with CK.
