In 2020, the MOE Key Laboratory of Macromolecular Synthesis and Functionalization in Zhejiang University had made progresses in several aspects. First, a series of metal-free organoboron catalysts had been designed and synthesized facilely, exhibiting outstanding reactivity, thermalstability and productivity in different kinds of polymerization and cycloaddition reactions. Second, a variety of chalcogen(O, S, Se)-rich polymers had been synthesized via organocatalysis and fabricated to be the ionic conductive and photoluminescent materials. Third, diverse microenvironment-sensitive nanoparticles had been designed, and novel strategies had been realized, to enhance the therapeutic efficacy in cancer as well as biofilm-associated infections. Fourth, m6A modification on cellular transcriptome-wide messenger RNA had been successfully mapped at single base resolution using a metabolic labelling method. Fifth, a hydrogel-based robot had been developed, showing swift locomotion as a response to dynamic light stimulations. Sixth, the conformation-size scaling law and the conformation evolution map of 2D macromolecules in solution had been elucidated experimentally, in the single-layer graphene oxide model. Seventh, semitransparent polymer solar cells, promising as building-integrated photovoltaics, have been developed with the fine balance among power conversion efficiency, visible light transparency and infrared photon radiation rejection. Finally, long-range ordered bulk-heterojunctions of organic semiconductors had been achieved, and their superior optoelectronic properties and potential application in photoelectric conversion had been revealed. The related work progresses are reviewed in this paper.

In this paper, the crystallization behavior of a novel poly(monothiocarbonate), poly(trimethylene monothiocarbonate) (PTMMTC), was investigated and compared with its polycarbonate analogue, poly(trimethylene carbonate) (PTMC). It is found that PTMMTC exhibits strong crystallizability, while unstretched PTMC is amorphous. DSC and DMA results reveal that PTMMTC possesses higher glass transition temperature (Tg) and β-transition temperature (Tβ) than PTMC. Simulation based on density functional theory (DFT) shows that, the bond angle of C-S-C is evidently smaller than that of C-O-C, and thus a larger dipole moment. This leads to the stronger intermolecular interaction and more rigid chain conformation in PTMMTC, which is the origin of sulfur-substitution enhanced crystallization. The crystal structure of PTMMTC was preliminarily determined for the first time. PTMMTC has an orthorhombic crystal structure with a planar zig-zag chain conformation. The parameters of unit cell are a = 10.74 A, b = 4.79 A, and c (fiber axis) = 7.74 A.

The development of effective and low-energy-consumption catalysts for CO2 conversion into high-value-added products by constructing versatile active sites on the surface of heterogeneous compounds is an urgent and challenging task. In this study, a stable and well-defined heterogeneous cobalt hexacyanocobaltate (Co3[Co(CN)6]2), typical cobalt Prussian blue analogue (CoCo-PBA) modified with tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB), is proven to be the superior catalyst for CO2 and epoxide coupling to produce cyclic carbonates with > 99% yield under mild reaction conditions (1.0 MPa, 65 °C). Based on a series of characterizations, it is revealed that the CoCo-PBA structure can maintain relatively high thermal and chemical stability. Recycling experiments exhibited that the CoCo-PBA system could retain 98% of the original activity after six reaction rounds. The CoCo-PBA/TBAB catalytic system was also highly active for coupling CO2 with other industrial-grade epoxides. These results show the CoCo-PBA catalytic system potential flexibility and the generality of the catalyst preparation strategy.

Double hydrosilylation of alkynes represents a straightforward method to synthesize bis(silane)s, yet it is challenging if α-substituted vinylsilanes act as the intermediates. Here, a cobalt-catalyzed regiodivergent double hydrosilylation of arylacetylenes is reported for the first time involving this challenge, accessing both vicinal and geminal bis(silane)s with exclusive regioselectivity. Various novel bis(silane)s containing Si-H bonds can be easily obtained. The gram-scale reactions could be performed smoothly. Preliminarily mechanistic studies demonstrated that the reactions were initiated by cobalt-catalyzed α-hydrosilylation of alkynes, followed by cobalt-catalyzed β-hydrosilylation of the α-vinylsilanes to deliver vicinal bis(silane)s, or hydride-catalyzed α-hydrosilylation to give geminal ones. The development of high-performance sustainable polymers as candidates to replace petroleum-based plastics is a priority, but still a grand challenge. Here, we report a series of stereo- and sequence-defined copolymers with isotactic polylactide and alternating/regioregular polythiocarbonate blocks from one-pot, metal-free, and switchable copolymerization of rac-lactide, COS, and epoxides. The highly active organocatalyst incorporating boron and chiral thiourea and tertiary amine groups is developed based on the site-monomer specific recognition mechanism, in short, the boron site selectively activates epoxides through B-O bonds and the thiourea site selectively activates lactide through hydrogen bonds. Such block copolymers manifest impressive toughness and ductility owing to their isotactic polylactide fragments and high molecular weights, such as P8 with an ultimate tensile strength of 54 ± 3 MPa and an elongation at break of 270 ± 10%. Our strategy provides distinctive insights into designing robust organocatalysts and promising sustainable polymers.

Single-molecule white-light emission (SMWLE) has many advantages in practical applications; however, the fabrication of SMWLE from nonconjugated luminescent polymers, namely, clusteroluminogens (CLgens), is still a big challenge. Herein, the first example of linear nonconjugated polyesters with SMWLE is reported. Twenty-four kinds of nonconjugated aliphatic polyesters with tunable clusteroluminescence (CL) colors and efficiency were synthesized by the copolymerization of six epoxides and four anhydrides. The study of non-conjugated luminescent polymers (NCLPs) with fluorescence and long-lived room-temperature phosphorescence is of great significance for revealing the essence of NCLPs luminescence, which has gradually attracted the attention of researchers in recent years. Herein, polymethylol (PMO) and poly(3-butene-1,2-diol) (PBD) with polyhydroxyl structures were prepared and their luminescence behaviors were investigated to further reveal the clusteroluminescence (CL) mechanism. Compared with the weak or even non-luminescent behavior of polyvinyl alcohol, PMO and PBD exhibit cyan-blue fluorescence with quantum yields of ca. 12% and green room-temperature phosphorescence with lifetimes of ca. 89 ms in the solid state. Both fluorescence and phosphorescence exhibit typical excitation-dependent CL behavior. Experimental and theoretical analyses show that the strong hydrogen-bonding interaction of PMO and PBD greatly promotes the formation of oxygen clusters and the through-space n-n interaction of oxygen atoms, enabling fluorescence and phosphorescence emission. The results of this work have important implications for understanding the clusteroluminescence mechanism of NCLPs and provide a new polymer design strategy for the rational design of novel NCLPs materials.

This work discloses a zwitterionic approach for selective copolymerization of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and propylene oxide (PO), producing poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC), a biodegradable polymer with broad applications. Small-molecule catalysts composed of triethylamine (TEA) and trialkyl boranes are effective for CO₂/PO copolymerization with an alternating degree of >99% and a productivity of 171 g PPC/g catalyst. A diamine N,N,N′,N′-tetraethyl ethylenediamine (TEED) paired with trialkyl borane exhibited improved activity and productivity (up to 216 g PPC/g catalyst). By adjusting the Lewis acid–base pair, the PPC selectivity can be regulated to 99%. In addition, PPCs have medium regioregularity with a head-to-tail diad content of 80–82% and number-average molecular weights of up to 56.0 kg/mol with narrow polydispersity (below 1.2). The overall catalytic performance of these readily available simple molecules is better than that of previously reported organic catalysts for CO₂/PO copolymerization. Successive insertion of PO and CO₂ into the Lewis pair leads to the formation of an end-to-end zwitterion featuring a TEB-masked anion and an onium cation, which is highly selective to the alternating copolymerization, as demonstrated by quantum mechanical calculations.

The copolymerization of carbonyl sulfide (COS) with epoxides has been developed to be a facile method to synthesize well-defined sulfur-containing polymers. This work describes the steric effect of tertiary amines on the copolymerization of COS with propylene oxide (PO) via a zwitterionic approach, using triethyl borane (TEB) accompanied by various tertiary amines. N,N-Dimethylcyclohexylamine accompanied by TEB (1/1) showed an exceedingly high turnover frequency of up to 69 800 h−1 and a copolymer selectivity of up to >99% for organocatalytic COS/PO copolymerization at 60 °C under solvent-free conditions. The obtained poly(propylene monothiocarbonate)s (PPMTC)s have fully alternating sequences, regioregularity of >99% tail-to-head (T–H) content, and high-number average molecular weights of up to 221.8 kg mol−1 and narrow dispersities (1.1–1.3) within 1 min. We disclosed that tertiary amines (pKa values range from 8.19 to 10.80) with less steric hindrance exhibited higher catalytic activity for COS/PO copolymerization.

Carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) have received great interest from researchers in recent years. However, the solid-state photoluminescence quenching of CPDs is a big challenge owing to the resonance energy transfer or π–π* interaction. Herein, we report a new type of carbon dioxide (CO2) derived CPD exhibiting quantum yields of 46.2% in solution and 11.3% as a solid. These CPDs were prepared using ethylenediamine and trimethylolpropane tri(cyclic carbonate)ether synthesized from the reaction of carbon dioxide (CO2) and trimethylolpropane triglycidyl ether as precursors in ethanol. Gel permeation chromatography results revealed that the formation of CPDs involved the polymerization of small molecules and then the transformation of the polymers to CPDs. The solid-state fluorescence is attributed to the self-passivation of poly(hydroxyurethane) chains on the surface of the carbon core. Particularly, the synthesis of CPDs consumed nearly 26.7 wt% CO2, thus providing a new method for fixing CO2 to functional carbon materials. We have also demonstrated the application of CO2-derived CPDs by the fabrication of multicolor light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and a warm white LED is obtained when CPDs are applied as single phosphors by changing the amount of CPDs and the type of chip.

The sequential arrangement of multiple monomer units in a polymer chain remains a major challenge in synthetic chemistry. Here we describe a versatile route to the novel polyester-polythiocarbonate block copolymer from commercially available lactones, epoxides, and carbonyl sulfide (COS). A bicomponent organocatalyst combining triazabicyclodecene (TBD) with triethyl borane (TEB) generates two types of tunable active sites, i.e. , TBD-capped alcohol via hydrogen bond and TEB-capped alcohol via O→B coordination bond, which can successively catalyze ring-opening polymerization of lactones and ring-opening copolymerization of COS and epoxides from mixed monomers in one pot. Because of the reversible activated propagating anions and fast activity exchange between the active and dormant species, all of the polymer chains are enchained with both polyester and polythiocarbonate blocks. Kinetic determination quantitatively confirms the proposed mechanism. This method enables diverse lactones and epoxides to form sulfur-containing block copolymers with readily tunable structures.

Preparation of non-conjugated polymers with long-wavelength emission and high quantum yield (QY) is still a huge challenge. Herein, we report the first example of linear non-conjugated polyester exhibiting yellow-green clusteroluminescence (CL) and a high QY of 38 %. We discovered that the polyester P3 with balanced flexibility and rigidity showed the longest CL wavelength and highest QY. Systematically photophysical characterization unravel the key role of ester cluster in the CL and the cluster formation via the aggregate of ester units was visualized. Moreover, P3 was demonstrated to be a highly selective, quick-responsive (ca. 1.2 min) and sensitive detector (detection limit is 0.78 μM) for irons owing to the fast disassociation of clusters by irons. This work not only gains further mechanistic insight into CL but also provides a new strategy to design high-efficiency and long-wavelength CL, meanwhile, enlightens the glorious application prospect of luminescent polyester.

This work reports a unique one-pot/one-step route to rapidly produce poly(thioether)s from poly(monothiocarbonate) (PMTC), a sulfur-containing polymer, using commercially available organic bases. The process started with the degradation of PMTC to a cyclic monothiocarbonate that generated an episulfide via a decarboxylative reaction. Then the episulfide underwent ring-opening polymerization. Organic bases catalyzed the degradation of PMTC and initiated the ring-opening of the generated cyclic monothiocarbonate. This process was successfully expanded to transform several PMTCs to the corresponding poly(thioether)s. The resultant poly(thioether)s exhibited higher thermal decomposition temperatures (up to 311 °C), higher refractive indexes (ca. 1.62) and lower glass transition temperatures (−48 °C) than those of the corresponding PMTCs. This work provides a polymer-to-polymer pathway for repurposing poly(monothiocarbonate)s.

The synthesis and stimuli-responsiveness of a diphenyl cyclopropenone (DPCP)-centered poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA) are presented. DPCP-centered PMA could release carbon monoxide (CO) upon UV light in a switched on-and-off manner. The CO-releasing process can be reported by the variations in photoluminescence spectra. In addition, DPCP moiety covalently embedded in the crosslinked polyurethane could also release CO under UV light. Of special, DPCP-centered PMA in solution was selectively dissociated at the phenol ester bond under the ultrasound, and a force-induced hydrolyzation reaction was revealed by D2O exchanging 1H NMR spectra. The kinetic study reveals that small quantity of water could enhance the chain scission rate. This work provides a DPCP-centered polymer for site-specific CO-releasing and chain dissociation.

Conjugated polymers and oligomers that emit polarized light are used as active materials in various optoelectronic device applications, notably organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Here, we demonstrate the fabrication of electrospun polarized light-emitting fibers from a non-conjugated polymer that can be aligned by a simple heat-stretching process. Upon excitation at 340 nm, ribbons made from the nanofibers show polarized deep blue luminescence with an anisotropy of 0.37 and a quantum yield of about 31%. Furthermore, they exhibit room temperature green phosphorescence with a lifetime of about 200 ms as well as a delayed deep blue fluorescence resulting from triplet–triplet annihilation (non-coherent photon upconversion) (TTA). Wide and small angle X-ray scattering experiments show that the stretched electrospun fibers are highly aligned with nearly perfect uniaxial orientation within the fabricated ribbons. This results in a mechanically robust and flexible material, with a high specific tensile strength (534 ± 28) MPa cm3 g−1 and toughness (79 ± 7) J g−1. The combination of efficient polarized deep blue luminescence, room temperature phosphorescence, TTA, mechanical robustness and flexibility of these fibers opens up new avenues for applications of non-conjugated polymers.

The synthesis of sulfur-containing polymer, a very promising functional material, has made a great progress in the past several years. This review is focused on the very recent advances in poly(monothiocarbonate)s derived from carbonyl sulfide (COS) and epoxides including biomass-derived epoxides. Of significance, metal-free catalyst systems, including triethyl borane/Lewis base pair and thiourea/Lewis base pair are developed for the alternating copolymerization of COS with epoxides. Thereof, the thiourea/Lewis base pair is highly active to the copolymerization of COS with epoxide in a living manner. Moreover, a series of crystalline poly(monothiocarbonate)s are presented, including the copolymers derived from COS with oxetane, ethylene oxide, enantiopure epichlorohydrin, and achiral meso-epoxides via enantioselective copolymerization. Based on these COS/epoxide copolymerization process, a variety of COS-based block copolymers with well-defined structure are presented.

Aliphatic poly(monothiocarbonate)s synthesized by alternating copolymerization of carbonyl sulfide (COS) and epoxides are a new type of crystalline polymers. In this work, the isothermal crystallization behavior and spherulite morphology of poly(trimethylene monothiocarbonate) (PTMMTC) and poly(ethylene monothiocarbonate) (PEMTC) are studied. PTMMTC tends to form banded spherulites, especially at low crystallization temperatures, while PEMTC forms non-banded spherulites. The overall crystallization rate and spherulitic growth rate of PTMMTC are larger than those of PEMTC at the same degree of supercooling. PTMMTC with longer alkane segment in the main chain has a higher equilibrium melting temperature (Tm0) than PEMTC. Both polymers exhibit double melting peaks, but the formation mechanisms are different for PTMMTC and PEMTC. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) result reveals that more amorphous phases are located in interlamellae of PTMMTC, leading to a larger long period (L) and a thicker amorphous layers (la), which can account for the stronger tendency of PTMMTC to form banded spherulites. The melting enthalpies of PTMMTC and PETMC crystals with 100% crystallinity (ΔHm0) are obtained by extrapolating the melting enthalpies of the samples with different crystallinities. The free energy of the folding surface (σe) of PTMMTC is larger than that of PETMC, indicating that the PTMMTC chain is stiffer. The higher Tm0 and larger ΔHm0 and σe of PTMMTC can be attributed to its stronger interchain interaction.

This work describes the first example of semicrystalline poly(thiocarbonate)s from carbon disulfide (CS2 ) and ethylene oxide (EO), two mass producible low-cost monomers. Lewis acid/base pairs (LPs) exhibit high activity (EO conversion up to >99%, 8 h) in catalyzing the copolymerization under low Lewis pair/monomer ratio of 1:1500. Oxygen-sulfur exchange reaction (O-S ER) during the copolymerization of CS2 and EO, the generation and mutual copolymerization with COS, CO2 , and episulfide, is harnessed to introduce crystallizable segments [SC(O)O and SC(S)S] in the copolymer. The type of Lewis base is found to have a great impact on the chain microstructure and the crystalline properties. The formed copolymers with melting point from 117.7 to 245.3 °C are obtained. The maximum crystallinity is estimated to be 78% based on the powder wide-angle X-ray diffraction pattern. This work provides a general method to prepare semicrystalline sulfur-containing polymers.

Metal-free synthesis of fully alternating polycarbonates from carbon dioxide (CO2) and epoxides is highly desired but a huge challenge. Here, we disclose the combination of tertiary amines with trialkyl boranes for completely alternating copolymerization of CO2 with epoxides. Triethylamine (TEA) pairing with triethyl borane (TEB), the simplest catalyst for the copolymerization of CO2 and propylene oxide (PO), afforded fully alternating poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 54 h-1 at 60 oC. Remarkably, diamine such as, N,N,N',N'-tetraethylethylenediamine (TEED) and triamine such as N,N,N',N'',N''-pentamethyldiethylene triamine (PMDETA) pairing with TEB exhibited improved the copolymer selectivity of up to 99%. Supplementally, the effect of trialkylborane structure on the copolymerization were also investigated. Moreover, PPCs prepared from these tertiary amines/ trialkyl boranes Lewis pairs showed the head-to-tail diad content of around 80%. The number-average molecular weight of PPC was up to 56.0 kg/mol with narrow distribution (Đ =1.16) and could be easily adjusted by simply varying the feeding ratios. The 1H NMR spectra and MALDI-TOF-MS spectra suggest that both tertiary amine-activating CO2 and TEB-masked end anions cooperatively promote the fully alternating CO2/epoxide copolymerization. This work provides an organocatalytic platform for well-defined CO2/epoxide copolymers using simple small molecules with high atomic utilization.

This work describes an organic double-site Lewis pair with exceedingly high activity for the copolymerization of carbonyl sulfide (COS) with propylene oxide (PO). Fully alternating poly(monothiocarbonate)s can be produced with >99% regioregularity in a living manner. Molecular weight of the copolymers can be tuned in the range of 3.8–103.1 kg mol−1 (PDI: 1.09–1.18). Importantly, the on–off character of this system was also investigated and proved to be an effective way to regulate the copolymerization and synthesize block copolymers.

The copolymerization of carbon dioxide (CO2) with epoxides via organocatalysis is still a big challenge. This work reports the selective copolymerization of CO2 and epoxides bearing a phenyl group, i.e., phenyl glycidyl ether (PGE) and styrene oxide (StO), catalyzed by a combination of Lewis bases (LBs) and excess triethyl borane (TEB). The resultant CO2/PGE copolymers presented a molar fraction of carbonate units (FCO2) of more than 99%, with a regioregularity of ca. 92%. The weight percentage of the cyclic carbonate (WCC) was less than 1 wt%. The turnover frequency (TOF) was as high as 38 h−1 for producing the CO2/PGE copolymer with a number-average molecular weight (Mn) of 16.6 kg mol−1 and a dispersity (Đ) of 1.2. What is of importance is that the dosage of TEB had a strong impact on the selectivity, where the regioregular copolymer or cyclic carbonate could be selectively produced by simply tuning the TEB/LB molar ratios, as revealed by in situ FT-IR spectroscopy. It is proposed that excess TEB could either promote the equilibrium to generate the TEB-coordinated growing anion or activate the epoxide for enhancing the reactivity. Both copolymers are promising optical materials as colorless solids with a high refractive index (nd) of 1.55–1.56 (590 nm, 20 °C, cast film).

The fast and living ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of propylene oxide (PO) by metal-free catalysis is reported. By using triethyl borane (TEB) and organic Lewis bases (LBs, e.g.: phosphazene base, amidine and guanidine) as the catalysts, various alkyl alcohols can effectively initiate the ROP of PO, yielding tailor-made poly(propylene oxide)s (PPOs) with high regioregularity, predictable molecular weights, and narrow dispersity approaching Poisson distribution. Ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of the bioderived and nonstrained γ-butyrolactone (γ-BL) is an emerging approach to produce recyclable polymers. It remains a big challenge to synthesize high molecular weight linear poly(γ-butyrolactone)s (PγBLs) in a highly active and selective manner. In this report, we developed dual organocatalysts for the ROP of γ-BL, using symmetrical (thio)ureas with electron-donating groups to buffer the growing anions that were generared by the superbase phosphazene (P4). Linear PγBLs were selectively obtained with high apparent rate constant (ca. 39 times than single P4), and high number-average molecular weights of up to 64.3 kg/mol (ca. 3 times than single P4). The turnover frequencies of these P4/(thio)urea pair-catalyzed processes were as high as 125 h–1. High molecular weight PγBLs exhibited dramatically improved mechanical properties.

This review highlights recent advances in the synthesis of carbon dioxide (CO 2 )-based copolymers with both linear (di-, tri-, and multi-block, etc.) and non-linear (star-block and grafting) architectures. The corresponding catalytic systems are summarized. The microstructure and polymerization mechanism of various types of CO 2 -based copolymers, including block polycarbonates and block copolymers of polycarbonate with polyester, polyether, polyvinyl, and polydiene are discussed. The junction unit between two blocks, which indicates an abrupt change in the chain microstructure and property, is emphasized to define the microstructure of CO 2 -based block copolymers. Special attention was paid to one-pot terpolymerization for the synthesis of CO 2 -based block and grafting copolymers. Finally, the thermal, mechanical, and degradation properties and self-assembly of CO 2 -based block and grafting copolymers are reviewed. Prospective future research and applications of this new class of polymeric materials are discussed.

Polyester synthesis from the alternating copolymerization of epoxides with cyclic anhydrides via a metal-free route remains a key challenge. This work reports the development of a highly active organocatalytic route for the copolymerization of a spectrum of epoxides and cyclic anhydrides. Fully alternating polyesters were synthesized by a variety of organic Lewis acid–base pairs including organoboranes and quaternary onium salts. The effect of the acidity, type, and size of Lewis pairs on the catalytic activity and selectivity of the copolymerization is presented. The undesirable transesterification and etherification were effectively suppressed even in the case of complete conversion of the cyclic anhydride. This could be ascribed to the formation of a unique tetracoordinate bond-carboxylate (or alkoxide) anion. The Lewis pairs are highly active, with a turnover frequency of 102 and 303 h–1 for the copolymerization of propylene oxide with maleic anhydride and phthalic anhydride, respectively, at 80 °C. B...
