Objective: To evaluate the effects of comprehensive nursing intervention on the quality of life and clinical outcomes of patients with thyroid nodules treated by ultrasound-guided microwave ablation., Methods: This was a prospective study conducted from December 2020 to December 2022 at The Fifth Medical Center of Chinese PLA General Hospital. One hundred and twenty patients with benign thyroid nodules undergoing microwave ablation were included. Patients were randomly divided into control group and experimental group. Patients in the control group were given conventional intervention mode during the perioperative period, while those in the experimental group were given comprehensive nursing intervention mode on the basis of the control group. The differences in quality of life, cognitive level before and after intervention and satisfaction between the two groups were compared and analyzed., Results: The SF-36 scores in the experimental group were significantly higher than that in the control group after intervention. After the intervention, the SAS and SDS scores in the experimental group were significantly lower than those in the control group, with a statistically significant difference. The VAS scores in the experimental group were better than those in the control group at six, twelve and twenty four hour after operation, with statistically significant differences. After the intervention, the cognitive score of the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group., Conclusion: Comprehensive nursing intervention is worthy of clinical promotion in the treatment of patients with thyroid nodules treated by ultrasound-guided microwave ablation, leading to various benefits such as effectively improving patients' quality of life and relieving pain., Competing Interests: Declaration of conflicting interest: None., (Copyright: © Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences.)

Study Design: Retrospective case series., Object: To evaluate the outcomes of a head frame reduction and atlantoaxial arthrodesis technique for the treatment of reducible basilar invagination (BI) and atlantoaxial dislocation (AAD)., Methods: Seventy-two reducible BI and AAD cases who were treated with the head frame reduction and atlantoaxial arthrodesis technique from June 2015 to December 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. Radiological measurements including the atlantodental interval (ADI), the height of odontoid process above Chamberlain line, Wackenheim line, clivus-canal angle (CCA) and JOA score were evaluated., Results: There was no death in this series. The follow-up period ranged from 6 to 32 months (mean: 21.2 months). Radiological, complete or 90% reduction was attained and complete decompression was demonstrated in all patients. The CCA increased from 123.22 ± 8.36 preoperatively to 143.05 ± 8.79 postoperatively (P < 0.01). There was no patient found postoperative dysphagia. Neurological improvement was observed in all patients, with the JOA scores increasing from 12.53 ± 1.93 preoperatively to 16.13 ± 1.23 postoperatively (P < 0.01). Solid bony fusion was demonstrated in 69 patients at follow-up (95.8%)., Conclusion: Head frame reduction technique is a simple and effective treatment which could relief neurologic compression and adjust the CCA in patients with reducible AAD and BI with lower potential risks. Atlantoaxial fixation with short segmental fixation, strong purchase and low shearing force could maintain superior stabilization. The safety and long-term efficacy of such fixation and reduction technique were favorable, which illustrated that it could be a promising treatment algorithm for such kind of disease.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common type of dementia and has a complex pathogenesis with no effective treatment. Energy metabolism disorders, as an early pathological event of AD,have attracted attention as a promising area of AD research. Codonopsis pilosula Polysaccharides are the main effective components of Codonopsis pilosula, which have been demonstrated to regulate energy metabolism., Methods: In order to further study the roles and mechanisms of Codonopsis pilosula polysaccharides in AD, this study used an Aβ 1-40 -induced PC12 cells model to study the protective effects of Codonopsis pilosula polysaccharides and their potential mechanisms in improving energy metabolism dysfunction., Results: The results showed that Aβ 1-40 induced a decrease in PC12 cells viability, energy metabolism molecules (ATP, NAD+, and NAD+/NADH) and Mitochondrial Membrane Potential (MMP) and an increase in ROS. Additionally, it was found that Aβ 1-40 increased CD38 expression related to NAD+ homeostasis, whereas Silent Information Regulation 2 homolog1 (SIRT1, SIRT3), Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator 1-α (PGC-1α) and SIRT3 activity were decreased. Codonopsis pilosula polysaccharides increased NAD+, NAD+/NADH, SIRT3, SIRT1, and PGC-1α related to NAD+, thus partially recovering ATP., Conclusion: Our findings reveal that Codonopsis pilosula polysaccharides protected PC12 cells from Aβ 1-40 -induced damage, suggesting that these components of the Codonopsis pilosula herb may represent an early treatment option for AD patients., (Copyright© Bentham Science Publishers; For any queries, please email at epub@benthamscience.net.)

Objective: To observe the effects of fast-twisting long-retaining (FTLR) acupuncture therapy on apoptosis of vestibular nucleus and expression of Caspase-3, Bcl-2 and Bax in rats with vertigo induced by posterior circulation ischemia., Methods: A total of 70 healthy SD rats were randomly divided into a sham operation group, a model group, a medication group, a regular acupuncture group and a FTLR acupuncture group, 14 rats in each group. The rats in the model group, medication group, regular acupuncture group and FTLR acupuncture group were intervented with surgical ligation of the right common carotid artery (CCA) and the right subclavian artery (SCA) to establish the model of vertigo induced by posterior circulation ischemia; in the sham operation group, the right CCA and the right SCA were separated without ligation. The rats in the medication group were treated with gavage of flunarizine hydrochloride suspension (10 mL/kg). "Baihui" (GV 20), "Shuaigu" (GB 8) and "Fengchi" (GB 20) were selected in the two acupuncture groups. The rats in the regular acupuncture group were treated with routine acupuncture and the needles were retained for 30 min, while the rats in the FTLR acupuncture group were treated with quick twist (200-300 times/min) for 1 min and the needles were retained for 60 min. The rats in the sham operation group and the model group received no intervention. All the intervention was provided once a day for 10 days. The decline rate of local blood flow in vestibular nucleus was observed; the apoptosis of vestibular nucleus was observed by TUNEL method; the expression of Caspase-3, Bcl-2 and Bax proteins were detected by immunohistochemistry., Results: Compared with the sham operation group, the decline rate of local blood flow in the right vestibular nucleus was significantly increased in the model group ( P <0.01), and the apoptosis index (AI) of vestibular nucleus was significantly increased ( P <0.01). Compared with the model group, the decline rates of local blood flow in the right vestibular nucleus in the two acupuncture groups and medication group were significantly reduced ( P <0.01), and the AIs of vestibular nucleus cells were significantly reduced ( P <0.01). The decline rate of local blood flow in the right vestibular nucleus in the FTLR acupuncture group was lower than those in the medication group and the regular acupuncture group ( P <0.01, P <0.05), and the AI of vestibular nucleus was lower than those in the regular acupuncture group and the medication group ( P <0.05). Compared with the sham operation group, the expression of Bcl-2 in the vestibular nucleus was significantly decreased in the model group ( P <0.01), and the expressions of Bax and Caspase-3 were significantly increased ( P <0.01). Compared with the model group, the expressions of Bcl-2 in the vestibular nucleus were significantly increased in the two acupuncture groups and medication group ( P <0.01), and the expressions of Bax and Caspase-3 were significantly reduced ( P <0.01). The expression of Bcl-2 in the vestibular nucleus in the FTLR acupuncture group was higher than those in the regular acupuncture group and the medication group ( P <0.05), and the expressions of Bax and Caspase-3 were lower than those in the regular acupuncture group and the medication group ( P <0.05)., Conclusion: The FTLR acupuncture therapy could effectively inhibit the apoptosis of vestibular nucleus in rats with vertigo induced by posterior circulation ischemia, and its mechanism may be related to improving the blood supply of vestibular nucleus and regulating the expressions of Caspase-3, Bcl-2 and Bax proteins.

Objective: To investigate the effect of quercetin on ATP binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1), liver X receptor (LXR), and proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) expressions in apoE-knockout (ApoE -/- ) mice., Methods: The high-fat diet-induced atherosclerosis (AS) in ApoE -/- mice was established. Thirty-six mice were divided into 3 groups using random number table method: model group (n=12), quercetin group (n=12), and atorvastatin group (n=12), with C57BL/6J mice of the same strain and age as the control group (n=12). Quercetin group and atorvastatin group were administrated with quercetin and atorvastatin by oral gavage, with doses of 12.5 and 4 mg/(kg•d), respectively. Animals in the control and model groups were given an equal volume of distilled water by oral gavage once per day for a total of 12 weeks. Western blot and immunohistochemical methods were employed to determine the aortic ABCA1, LXR-α and PCSK9 protein expression. Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay method was used to detect the expression of serum total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and IL-10, combined with tissue pathological examination., Results: ApoE -/- mice fed with a high-fat diet had notable atherosclerosis lesions, with reduced ABCA1, LXR-α and IL-10 levels (all P<0.01), elevated PCSK9, TNF-α and IL-6 expression, and increased TC and LDL-C contents (all P<0.01). After quercetin intervention, the areas of AS plaques and the expressions of PCSK9, TNF-α and IL-6 were significantly reduced (all P<0.01), while the expressions of ABCA1 and LXR-α were increased significantly (all P<0.01)., Conclusion: Quercetin effectively interfered with AS development by regulating the expressions of ABCA1, LXR- α and PCSK9 in ApoE -/- mice.

Boea hygrometrica can survive extreme drought conditions and has been used as a model to study desiccation tolerance. A genome-wide transcriptome analysis of B. hygrometrica showed that the plant can survive rapid air-drying after experiencing a slow soil-drying acclimation phase. In addition, a weighted gene co-expression network analysis was used to study the transcriptomic datasets. A network comprising 22 modules was constructed, and seven modules were found to be significantly related to desiccation response using an enrichment analysis. Protein ubiquitination was observed to be a common process linked to hub genes in all the seven modules. Ubiquitin-modified proteins with diversified functions were identified using immunoprecipitation coupled with mass spectrometry. The lowest level of ubiquitination was noted at the full soil drying priming stage, which coincided the accumulation of dehydration-responsive gene BhLEA2. The highly conserved RY motif (CATGCA) was identified from the promoters of ubiquitin-related genes that were downregulated in the desiccated samples. An in silico gene expression analysis showed that the negative regulation of ubiquitin-related genes is potentially mediated via a B3 domain-containing transcription repressor VAL1. This study suggests that priming may involve the transcriptional regulation of several major processes, and the transcriptional regulation of genes in protein ubiquitination may play a hub role to deliver acclimation signals to posttranslational level in the acquisition of desiccation tolerance in B. hygrometrica., (� The Author(s) 2019. Objective: To investigate the effect and underlying mechanisms of Tiaoxin Recipe (a Chinese herbal formula) treatment on Alzheimer's disease (AD)., Methods: Twelve-week-old APPswe/PS1ΔE9 (APP/PS1) double transgenic mice were used as a model of AD-afflicted mice. One group of mice was treated with Tiaoxin Recipe by gastrogavage for 12 weeks, while two other groups were given intraperitoneal injections of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide or FK866 for 4 weeks. Morris water maze and thioflavin S staining tests were performed to evaluate cognitive impairment and amyloid plaque deposition, respectively. Serum amyloid-β1-42 (Aβ1-42) content was detected using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was performed to examine the expression levels of microRNA-34a (miR-34a) in cortex and hippocampus samples of the study mice., Results: Compared with the normal control group, the memory and learning abilities of the APP/PS1 model group were found to be impaired (P < 0.01), as shown by the increased levels of senile plaque deposition in cortex and hippocampus (P < 0.01), miR-34a expression (P < 0.01) and serum Aβ1-42 content (P < 0.01). Treatment with Tiaoxin Recipe significantly reduced memory impairment (P < 0.01) by reducing amyloid plaque accumulation in cortex and hippocampus (P < 0.01), miR-34a expression (P < 0.01) and serum Aβ1-42 content (P < 0.01) in APP/PS1 mice., Conclusion: Tiaoxin Recipe is a viable complementary or alternative therapeutic treatment that is capable of delaying the development of early-stage AD by inhibiting the expression of miR-34a., (Copyright © 2019 Shanghai Changhai Hospital. Quercetin is a flavonoid that has anti‑inflammatory, anti‑oxidant and lipid metabolic effects. It has also been reported to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. The present study measured the effects of quercetin on the expression of ATP‑binding cassette transporter 1 (ABCAl), ATP‑binding cassette sub‑family G member 1 (ABCG1), liver X receptor‑α (LXR‑α), proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9), p53, p21 and p16 induced by oxidized low density lipoprotein (ox‑LDL). RAW264.7 macrophages were exposed to ox‑LDL with or without 20 µmol/l quercetin and cell proliferation and senescence were quantified using β‑gal staining. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA) and lipid droplets were measured in the cytoplasm using oil red staining, while intracellular and total cholesterol (TC) were measured using filipin staining and a TC kit. Immunofluorescent studies and western blot analysis were performed to quantify the expression of ABCAl, ABCG1, LXR‑α, PCSK9, p53, p21 and p16. Quercetin increased RAW264.7 cell viability and reduced lipid accumulation, senescence, lipid droplets, intracellular cholesterol and TC. It was concluded that quercetin inhibits ox‑LDL‑induced lipid droplets in RAW264.7 cells by upregulation of ABCAl, ABCG1, LXR‑α and downregulation of PCSK9, p53, p21 and p16.

Objective: To analyze the incidence and causes of stillbirth in 11 hospitals of Guangdong province, and to explore the appropriate interventions. Methods: Clinical data of stillbirth in 11 hospitals of Guangdong province were collected from January 2014 to December 2016. The gestational weeks, causes, maternal conditions and other factors were analyzed. Results: (1) From 2014 to 2016, 103 472 newborns were delivered in the 11 hospitals, and the number of stillbirth was 2 204, with the incidence of 2.13%. Among them, 0.71%(738/103 472) was therapeutic induction, 1.42%(1 066/103 472) was natural stillbirth. At different gestational age (<28 weeks, 28-<37 weeks and ≥37 weeks), the incidence of stillbirth was 55.63% (1 226/2 204), 28.45% (627/2 204) and 15.92% (351/2 204), respectively, with statistically significant difference ( P< 0.01). (2) For stillbirth<28 weeks, the first reason was therapeutic induction, accounting for 53.34% (654/1 226). For stillbirth during 28-37 weeks, pre-eclampsia was the major cause, accounting for 40.67% (255/627). And for full-term stillbirth, the causes were umbilical cord factors (19.37%, 68/351), abnormal labor (17.09%, 60/351). (3) In all the stillbirth cases, the incidence of fetal growth restriction (FGR) < 28 weeks was significantly higher than that during 28-37 weeks [23.49% (288/1 226) vs 18.02% (113/627) , P< 0.01]. (4) The stillbirth rate during labor was significantly higher in women ≥35 years old than in younger women [63.88% (191/299) vs 36.12% (108/299) ; χ(2)=9.346, P= 0.000]. For the causes of stillbirth during labor, the incidence of severe maternal obstetrical complications [61.11% (33/54) vs 38.89% (21/54) ; χ(2)=3.323, P= 0.002], abnormal labor [65.82% (52/79) vs 34.18% (27/79) ; χ(2)=4.067, P= 0.001] and abnormal fetal position [66.63% (26/39) vs 33.37% (13/39) ; χ(2)=3.002, P= 0.013] were higher in women ≥35 years old than in younger women. (5) Cesarean section during labor accounted for 33.77% (101/299) of stillbirth, including 76 cases of emergency cesarean section or converted to cesarean section during labor. Conclusions: (1) The incidence of stillbirth in the 11 hospitals is high, and the causes are different at different gestational ages, therefore, different interventions are needed to reduce the incidence in different gestational weeks. Supervision of therapeutic induction should be strengthened <28 gestational weeks; standard management of pregnancy might decrease the occurrence of natural death ≥28 weeks. (2) Attention should be paid to fetal body weight during pregnancy, especially FGR. (3) The stillbirth rate is high in elderly pregnant women, so it is important to strengthen the management of the elderly pregnant women.

Adaptation is a characteristic that enhances the survival or reproduction of organisms; selection is the critical process leading to adaptive evolution. Therefore, detecting selection is important in studying evolutionary biology. Changes in allele frequency are fundamental to adaptive evolution. The allele frequency of entire genes at the genomic scale is more intensive and precise for analyzing selection effects, compared with simple sequence repeat and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) alleles from nuclear gene fragments. Here, we analyzed 29,094 SNPs derived from 80 individuals of 14 L. Liou ex S.L. Chen & Renvoize populations planted near their native habitat (Jiangxia, Hubei Province, JH) and a stressful environment (Qingyang, Gansu Province, QG) to detect selection during initial adaptation. The nucleotide diversity of over 60% of genes was decreased in QG compared with JH, suggesting that most genes were undergoing selection in the stressful environment. We explored a new approach based on haplotype data inferred from RNA-seq data to analyze the change in frequency between two sites and to detect selection signals. In total, 402 and 51 genes were found to be targets of positive and negative selection, respectively. Among these candidate genes, the enrichment of abiotic stress-response genes and photosynthesis-related genes might have been responsible for establishment in the stressful environment. This is the first study assessing the change in allele frequency at the genomic level during adaptation. Background: Alzheimer disease (AD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that is characterized by its gradual progression. At present, the cause and mechanism of AD are yet unclear, and there is no effective therapy for treating it. With development of global aging, the prevalence rate of AD is increasing. The life quality of elderly people is affected severely by AD that is ultimately life-threatening. Recently, study on treating AD with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has deepened., Objective: To explore the therapeutic effects of a syndrome differentiation-based TCM regime in treating patients with mild to moderate AD for improving cognition, and to evaluate the changes in brain function of AD patients observed by resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) technique., Design, Setting, Participants and Interventions: Adopting the internationally recognized criteria developed by National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Diseases and Stroke/Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association, the clinical trial was conducted on 131 patients with mild to moderate AD from 5 communities and 7 social welfare institutions. Participants were accepted after informed consent was received, and laboratory tests and a head imaging study were conducted. The patients were randomly divided into Chinese medicine group (CMG) (66 cases) or Western medicine group (WMG) (65 cases). Patients in the CMG were treated monthly with Chinese medicine according to syndrome differentiation. Patients in the WMG were treated with donepezil at a dose of 5 mg once daily. The therapeutic course lasted 48 weeks., Main Outcome Measures: The scores of Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Fuld Object-Memory Evaluation (FOM), Block Design (BD) and Digit Span (DS) were used to evaluate the cognitive function; resting-state fMRI was used for observing brain function. The questionnaires and fMRI were performed before and after treatments., Results: The cognitive functions of the patients in the CMG and WMG were improved after treatment. MMSE score was improved significantly in both groups (P<0.05 or P<0.001). After 48 weeks of treatment, 70.91% patients in the CMG had an improved MMSE score and 20% got worse, however, 55.77% patients in the WMG were improved in MMSE score and 34.62% got worse. Scores of FOM denominator and BD increased significantly in both groups; scores of FOM numerator and DS were also increased in the CMG (P<0.05 or P<0.01). The results of fMRI suggested that both Chinese medicine and donepezil treatment improved the connectivity between posterior cingulated gyrus and specific areas in the brain. The influence range of Chinese medicine primarily impacted on the left parietal lobe, being less than the influence range of donepezil, which primarily affected both sides of frontal lobes., Conclusion: TCM treatment based on syndrome differentiation is effective in improving cognitive function of patients with mild to moderate AD and increasing the brain function by increasing connectivity between posterior cingulated gyrus and specific areas in the brain.

Objective: To observe the effect of needle-retention duration at Baihui (GV 20) and Sishencong (EX-HN 1) on blood pressure in hypertension patients., Methods: Twenty-four patients with essential hypertension were randomly divided into acupuncture group and medication group. For patients of the acupuncture group, single-use sterilized filiform needles were inserted into Baihui (GV 20) and Sishencong (EX-HN 1) and manipulated for about 10 s till "Deqi", and retained for 8 h. Patients of the medication group were treated by oral administration of Nifedipine tablets(20 mg)in the morning. Blood pressure (right brachial artery) was detected 0.5, 2, 4, 6 and 8 h after the treatment respectively., Results: In comparison with pre-treatment, the systolic pressure levels at the time-points of 0.5, 2, 4, 6 and 8 h after taking Nifedipine in the medication group, and the systolic pressure levels at the time-points of 2, 4 and 6 h after the treatment in the acupuncture group, and the diastolic pressure levels at the time-points of 2, 4, 6 and 8 h in both acupuncture and medication groups were decreased obviously (P<0.05, P<0.01). The effect of acupuncture group was significantly weaker than that of the medication group in lowering systolic pressure at the time-points of 0.5 and 8 h after the treatment (P<0.01). No significant differences were found between the acupuncture and medication groups in lowering systolic pressure at the time-points of 2, 4 and 6 h after the treatment, and in lowering diastolic pressure at the time-points of 0.5, 2, 4, 6 and 8 h after the treatment (P>0.05)., Conclusion: Acupuncture stimulation of Baihui (GV 20) and Sishencong (EX-HN 1) with sustained needle-retention works well in lowering blood pressure in hypertension patients, but is relatively slower and has a shorter period of time in lowering blood-pressure efficacy.

Accumulation of the amyloid β protein (Aβ) in the brain is an important step in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease. Many molecules could bind with Aβ, among which some molecules mediate Aβ neuronal toxicity. Thus, it is of interest to study the binding proteins of Aβ, and the functions that might be affected by Aβ. In the present study, we observed that accumulation of α-subunit of ATP synthase is associated with aggregates of Aβ proteins in amyloid plaques of amyloid precursor protein/presennillin-1 transgenic mice, and identified the α-subunit of ATP synthase as one of the Aβ binding proteins on the plasma membrane of neural cells by Western blot and mass spectrometry. In order to evaluate the consequences of the interaction between Aβ and surface α-subunit of ATP synthase, the extracellular ATP generation was analyzed, which showed that aggregated Aβ partially inhibited the extracellular generation of ATP, but was unable to significantly induce a decrease in cell surface ATP synthase α on neurons. These results suggest that the cell surface ATP synthase α is a binding protein for Aβ on neural cells, the functional inhibition of surface ATP synthase might be involved in machinery of brain malfunction in Aβ-mediated pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease.

The ATP synthase is known to play important roles in ATP generation and proton translocation within mitochondria. Here, we now provide evidence showing the presence of functional ecto-ATP synthase on the neuronal surface. Immunoblotting revealed that the α, β subunits of ATP synthase F1 portion are present in isolated fractions of plasma membrane and biotin-labelled surface protein from primary cultured neurons; the surface distribution of α, β subunits was also confirmed by immunofluorescence staining. Moreover, α and β subunits were also found in fractions of plasma membrane and lipid rafts isolated from rat brain, and flow cytometry analysis showed α subunits on the surface of acutely isolated brain cells. Activity assays showed that the extracellular ATP generation of cultured neurons could be compromised by α, β subunit antibodies and ATP synthase inhibitors. pH(i) (intracellular pH) analysis demonstrated that at low extracellular pH, α or β subunit antibodies decreased pHi of primary cultured neurons. Therefore, ATP synthase on the surface of neurons may be involved in the machineries of extracellular ATP generation and pH(i) homoeostasis.

Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics of 3 community outbreaks of the novel influenza A (H1N1), and to compare the treatment effects of the traditional Chinese medicine with or without Oseltamivir., Method: The clinical records of 234 patients in 3 community outbreaks of the novel influenza A (H1N1) infection in June (n = 56), August (n = 96) and October (n = 82) of 2009 were analyzed, and the treatment effects of the traditional Chinese medicine with or without Oseltamivir were evaluated., Results: The baseline characteristics, including age, temperature, indices of blood tests, hepatic and renal functions were distributed evenly between the 2 treatment groups. The overall analysis suggested that there was no significant difference between the 2 treatment groups in the duration of clinical symptoms (P > 0.05), the duration of fever (P > 0.05), and the hospitalization days (P > 0.05). However, an analysis stratified by the temperature (≥ 39°C or < 39°C) suggested that patients treated by the traditional Chinese medicine with Oseltamivir tended to suffer a shorter duration of fever [40.5 (37.3, 42.0) vs 22.0 (10.5, 30.8) hr, P < 0.01) ] in the higher temperature group., Conclusions: The traditional Chinese medicine was equivalent to oseltamivir in treating patients with the novel influenza A (H1N1) infection with lower temperature (< 39°C). Oseltamivir was effective in shortening the duration of fever in patients with temperature higher than 39°C.

Unlabelled: Chemical composition and antioxidant, antimicrobial activities of the essential oils from Thymus marschallianus Will. and Thymus proximus Serg. growing in the wild in Xinjiang were studied. Samples were collected from the aerial parts of the plants with simultaneous distillation-extraction apparatus. The yields ranged between 1.22%+/- 0.01 and 0.16%+/- 0.01 (weight/dry weight), respectively, 53 and 60 kinds of volatiles, representing 99.6% and 99.7% of the essential oils, respectively, were identified in extracts from T. marschallianus and T. proximus by GC/MS analysis. The main components were Thymol (28.0% to 32.9%), p-Cymene (7.7% to 25.4%), and gamma-Terpinene (18.0% to 22.4%). Antioxidant activities of the oils were evaluated using metal chelating, reductive potential, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, hydroxyl radical, and modified thiobarbituric acid reactive substances assay. Antimicrobial activities of the oils were investigated on Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, yeast, Rhizopus, and Penicillium. The inhibition zones (IZ) and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values were 5.0 to 35.7 mm in diameter and 1.81 to 4.52 microL/mL, respectively., Practical Application: Due to the economical impacts of spoiled foods and the consumer's concerns over the safety of foods, a lot of attention has been paid to naturally derived compounds. Fresh and dried Thymus species as well as their processed products have been widely used as flavorings since ancient times; however, during the last few decades, they also have become a subject for a search of natural antioxidants and antimicrobial agents. Biological activities of Thymus essential oils depend on their chemical composition, which is determined by the genotype and influenced by environmental conditions. Recent studies have showed that Thymus species have strong antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. To the best of our knowledge, the properties of Thymus species growing wild in the Xinjiang have not been reported before.

Objective: To study the mechanisms of tongjingning granule (TJN) on primary dysmenorrhea (PD)., Methods: One hundred and twenty PD patients were treated with TJN, and 40 patients treated with aspirin as controls. The levels of serum estrogen (E2) and progestin (P) content in the luteal metaphase and anaphase (MI/AI) as well as endothelin (ET) and calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP) in the metaphase and menstrual stage before and after treatment in partial patients were determined., Results: The therapeutic effect , and the curative markedly-effective rate and improvement rate of main accompanied symptoms of severe and moderate PD patients in the treated group were superior than those in the control group (P < 0.01). The level of E2 and ET were significantly decreased, and the content of P and CGRP were significantly increased in the treated group after treatment respectively (P < 0.01)., Conclusion: JTN not only can regulate ovarian hormone, ET and CGRP, but shows advantages in adjusting spirits and emotions, improving homeostasis and consolidating the therapeutic effect.
