Abstract Background Prior meta-analyses have established the potential of intravenous ketamine in safeguarding against neurocognitive impairment, but the efficacy of intravenous esketamine for the prevention of perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PND) remains uncertain. The primary aim of this meta-analysis was to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the effects of esketamine on PND in adult surgical patients undergoing general anesthesia. Methods We searched several electronic databases and clinical trial registries to find relevant trials. Randomized controlled trials of perioperative use of esketamine adjuvant were included in the analysis. The main outcome measured was the risk of postoperative delirium(POD) and postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD). Secondary outcomes included the assessment of postoperative cognitive status, pain scores (VAS/NRS), remifentanil consumption and the occurrence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). Results Thirteen studies encompassing procedures such as abdominal, thoracoscopic lung, gastrointestinal, laparoscopic gynecological, spinal surgery, and modified radical mastectomy, were included in the analysis. A cohort comprising 1068 adult patients underwent general anesthesia, with 584 patients assigned to the esketamine group and 484 patients designated to the placebo group. The administration of general anesthesia was augmented by intravenous infusion of esketamine, and a comparative analysis was conducted in relation to alternative pharmacological interventions or a placebo. Introduction: Global warming is increasing interest in how aquatic animals can adjust their physiological performance and cope with temperature changes. Therefore, understanding the behavioral changes and molecular underpinnings in fish under warming is crucial for both the individual and groups survival. This could provide experimental evidence and resource for evaluating the impact of global warming. Objective: Three genetic families of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) were generated. These juveniles were constructed short-term (4 days) and long-term (30 days) warming groups to investigate the effects of warming on behavioral responses and to elucidate the potential underlying mechanisms of warming-driven behavior. Methods: Behavioral tests were used to explore the effects of short- and long-term exposure to warming on the swimming behavior of C. carpio. Brain transcriptome combined with measurement of nervous system activity was used to further investigated the comprehensive neuromolecular mechanisms under warming. Results: Long-term warming groups had a more significant impact on the decline of swimming behavior in juvenile C. carpio. Furthermore, brain comparative transcriptomic analysis combined with measurement of nervous system activity revealed that genes involved in cytoskeletal organization, mitochondrial regulation, and energy metabolism are major regulators of behavior in the juvenile under warming. Importantly, especially in the long-term warming groups, enrichment analysis of associated gene expression suggested functional alterations of synaptic transmission and signal transduction leading to swimming function impairment in the central nervous system, as revealed by behavioral tests. Conclusions: Our study provides evidence of the neurogenomic mechanism underlying the decreased swimming activity in juvenile C. carpio under warming. These findings have important implications for understanding the impacts of climate change on aquatic ecosystems and the organisms that inhabit them.

Abstract Background Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are critical factors that limit the effectiveness of gastric cancer (GC) therapy. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are confirmed as important regulators of many cancers. However, their role in regulating CSC-like properties of GC remains largely unknown. Our study aimed to investigate the role of circUBA2 in CSC maintenance and the underlying mechanisms. Methods We identified circUBA2 as an upregulated gene using circRNA microarray analysis. qRT-PCR was used to examine the circUBA2 levels in normal and GC tissues. In vitro and in vivo functional assays were performed to validate the role of circUBA2 in proliferation, migration, metastasis and CSC-like properties of GC cell. The relationship between circUBA2, miR-144-5p and STC1 was characterised using bioinformatics analysis, a dual fluorescence reporter system, FISH, and RIP assays. Results CircUBA2 expression was significantly increased in GC tissues, and patients with GC with high circUBA2 expression had a poor prognosis. CircUBA2 enhances CSC-like properties of GC, thereby promoting cell proliferation, migration, and metastasis. Mechanistically, circUBA2 promoted GC malignancy and CSC-like properties by acting as a sponge for miR-144-5p to upregulate STC1 expression and further activate the IL-6/JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway. More importantly, the ability of circUBA2 to enhance CSC-like properties was inhibited by tocilizumab, a humanised Interleukin-6 receptor (IL-6R) antibody. Thus, circUBA2 knockdown and tocilizumab synergistically inhibited CSC-like properties. Conclusions Our study demonstrated the critical role of circUBA2 in regulating CSC-like properties in GC. ObjectiveBlood urea nitrogen (BUN) is a commonly used biomarker for assessing kidney function and neuroendocrine activity. Previous studies have indicated that elevated BUN levels are associated with increased mortality in various critically ill patient populations. The focus of this study was to investigate the relationship between BUN and 28-day mortality in intensive care patients.MethodsThis was a multi-centre retrospective cohort study that made use of data from the eICU Collaborative Research Database. The primary exposure variable was BUN, and the outcome was 28-day mortality. The following variables were included as covariates: age, gender, BMI, white blood cell count, creatinine, GCS score, APACHE IV score, and diabetes. The statistical analyses included univariate and multivariate logistic regression, as well as generalized additive modelling, which was employed to assess the non-linear relationship between BUN and mortality.ResultsA total of 63,757 elderly patients were included in the study, with a 28-day mortality of 6.5%. The univariate analysis indicated that elevated BUN quartiles were associated with an increased risk of mortality. The results of the multivariate analysis further confirmed the non-linear relationship between BUN and mortality. When BUN was less than 32 mg/dL, there was a significant positive association, with an adjusted odds ratio of 1.230 (95% CI: 1.154-1.311, pConclusionBUN showed a nonlinear, threshold correlation with 28-day mortality in critically ill patients. The higher the BUN, the greater the risk of death if the BUN is below the threshold.

Inositol-requiring enzyme 1 (IRE1), a mediator of the unfolded protein response, shows the highest degree of evolutionary conservation. Vertebrates express two IRE1 paralogs: IRE1α, which is universally expressed and IRE1β, which shows specific expression within mucus secreted cells in respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts. The biological properties and regulation of the two IRE1 duplicates show evolutionary differences. As recently suggested, IRE1β-deficient mice display impairment in secreted protein expression and mucosal homeostasis. Abnormal changes in IRE1β caused by external and internal factors can disrupt mucosal homeostasis and further lead to respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases. Here, we highlight the physiological functions of IRE1β in the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts in response to environmental microbes, viruses, toxins, and food components.

To broaden the bandwidth, a sandwich acoustic metamaterial with periodically rib-stiffened cores is presented by incorporating strip masses. The normal sound transmission loss of the structure is predicted using the finite element method. Results indicate that the two attenuation peaks are coupled, which is validated by the impedance tube experiment. The primary mechanism of the coupled-resonance is attributed to the continuous non-zero effective dynamic surface mass density between two anti-resonances. The conditions for generating the coupled-resonance are derived based on the dual mass-spring model without resolving the matrix eigenvalues. Numerical verifications suggest that the coupled band will break down into two isolated narrow bands if the conditions fail. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract The construction of a large-scale quantum internet requires quantum repeaters containing multiple entangled photon sources with identical wavelengths. Semiconductor quantum dots can generate entangled photon pairs deterministically with high fidelity. However, realizing wavelength-matched quantum-dot entangled photon sources faces two difficulties: the non-uniformity of emission wavelength and exciton fine-structure splitting induced fidelity reduction. Typically, these two factors are not independently tunable, making it challenging to achieve simultaneous improvement. In this work, we demonstrate wavelength-tunable entangled photon sources based on droplet-etched GaAs quantum dots through the combined use of AC and quantum-confined Stark effects. The emission wavelength can be tuned by ~1 meV while preserving an entanglement fidelity f exceeding 0.955(1) in the entire tuning range. Based on this hybrid tuning scheme, we finally demonstrate multiple wavelength-matched entangled photon sources with f > 0.919(3), paving the way towards robust and scalable on-demand entangled photon sources for quantum internet and integrated quantum optical circuits.

Abstract Wireless sensing of the wave propagation direction from radio sources lays the foundation for communication, radar, navigation, etc. However, the existing signal processing paradigm for the direction of arrival estimation requires the radio frequency electronic circuit to demodulate and sample the multichannel baseband signals followed by a complicated computing process, which places the fundamental limit on its sensing speed and energy efficiency. Here, we propose the super-resolution diffractive neural networks (S-DNN) to process electromagnetic (EM) waves directly for the DOA estimation at the speed of light. The multilayer meta-structures of S-DNN generate super-oscillatory angular responses in local angular regions that can perform the all-optical DOA estimation with angular resolutions beyond the diffraction limit. The spatial-temporal multiplexing of passive and reconfigurable S-DNNs is utilized to achieve high-resolution DOA estimation over a wide field of view. The S-DNN is validated for the DOA estimation of multiple radio sources over 5 GHz frequency bandwidth with estimation latency over two to four orders of magnitude lower than the state-of-the-art commercial devices in principle. The results achieve the angular resolution over an order of magnitude, experimentally demonstrated with four times, higher than diffraction-limited resolution. We also apply S-DNN’s edge computing capability, assisted by reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, for extremely low-latency integrated sensing and communication with low power consumption. Our work is a significant step towards utilizing photonic computing processors to facilitate various wireless sensing and communication tasks with advantages in both computing paradigms and performance over electronic computing.

F-2 toxin is an estrogenic mycotoxin that causes reproductive disorders in animals. Betulinic acid (BA) is a natural pentacyclic lupane-structure triterpenoid that has diverse pharmacological activities. In this study, the antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects of BA and its underlying mechanism are explored in F-2 toxin-triggered mouse ovarian damage. We found that BA alleviated the F-2 toxin-induced ovarian impairment by stimulating follicle growth, reducing inflammatory cell infiltration, repairing damaged mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum. Simultaneously, BA not only reversed F-2 toxin-induced reduction of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) levels in the serum, but also restrained the protein expression of the estrogen receptors α (ERα) and ERβ. Moreover, BA restored the balance of F-2 toxin-induced ovarian redox system disorders. Subsequently, we found that 0.25 mg/kg BA played an anti-inflammatory role in the F-2 toxin-induced ovarian impairment by decreasing interleukin-1β (IL-1β), IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) mRNA expression, as well as inhibiting p38 protein expression.These data demonstrated that BA exerts its protective effect on F-2 toxin-induced ovarian oxidative impairment and inflammation by inhibiting p38 expression, which implies a natural product-based medicine to ameliorate F-2 toxin-caused female reproductive toxicity and provides a detoxifying method for food contaminated by mycotoxin.

Abstract The rapid development of emerging technologies observed in recent years, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, mobile internet, big data, cloud computing, and the Internet of Everything, are generating escalating demands for expanding the capacity density, and speed in next‐generation optical communications. This poses a significant challenge to existing communication techniques. Within this context, the integration of near‐infrared broadband, tunable, and high‐gain luminescent materials into silicon optical circuits or fiber architectures to transmit and modulate light shows enormous potential for advancing next‐generation communication techniques. Here, this review provides an overview of the recent breakthroughs in near‐infrared luminescent epitaxial/colloidal quantum dots, and metal‐active‐center‐doped materials for broadband optical amplifiers and tunable lasers. We also expound on efforts to enhance the bandwidth and gain of these materials‐based amplifiers and lasers, exploring the challenges associate with developing ultra‐broadband and high‐speed optical communication systems. Additionally, the potential applications in Fifth Generation Fixed Networks, integration with 5G and 6G wireless networks, compensation for current Si electronic based CMOS for high computing capability, and the prospects of these light sources for next‐generation optoelectronic devices are discussed.

Electroencephalography (EEG) analysis extracts critical information from brain signals, enabling brain disease diagnosis and providing fundamental support for brain–computer interfaces. However, performing an artificial intelligence analysis of EEG signals with high energy efficiency poses significant challenges for electronic processors on edge computing devices, especially with large neural network models. Herein, we propose an EEG opto-processor based on diffractive photonic computing units (DPUs) to process extracranial and intracranial EEG signals effectively and to detect epileptic seizures. The signals of the EEG channels within a second-time window are optically encoded as inputs to the constructed diffractive neural networks for classification, which monitors the brain state to identify symptoms of an epileptic seizure. We developed both free-space and integrated DPUs as edge computing systems and demonstrated their applications for real-time epileptic seizure detection using benchmark datasets, that is, the Children’s Hospital Boston (CHB)–Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) extracranial and Epilepsy-iEEG-Multicenter intracranial EEG datasets, with excellent computing performance results. Along with the channel selection mechanism, both numerical evaluations and experimental results validated the sufficiently high classification accuracies of the proposed opto-processors for supervising clinical diagnosis. Our study opens a new research direction for utilizing photonic computing techniques to process large-scale EEG signals and promote broader applications.

With the expansion of vaccination programs, the policy of terminating nonpharmaceutical interventions for preventing the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic should become more flexible. The current study investigated the clinical and economic outcomes of intervention policies combining nonpharmaceutical interventions and vaccination programs for dealing with the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. An agent-based transmission model was adopted that describes how a SARS-CoV-2 virus spreads in the populations of China. The model inputs were derived from the literature and expert opinion. The following intervention policies were simulated: no intervention, strict nonpharmaceutical interventions, and nonpharmaceutical interventions for workplace, community, school and home gradually terminated by combining vaccination programs for specified age groups (vaccination age in years: 20–60, 20–70, 20–80, ≥ 20, ≥ 10 and whole population). Cumulative infections and deaths in one calendar year, costs and quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) were measured. When the vaccination program was taken up in at least the ≥ 20 years age group in all populations, nonpharmaceutical interventions for workplace and community settings could be gradually terminated because the cumulative number of infections was < 100 per 100,000 persons. Further ending nonpharmaceutical interventions in school and home settings could not meet the target even when the vaccination program had been taken up in all populations. When cumulative deaths were used as the endpoint, nonpharmaceutical interventions in workplace, community and school settings could be gradually terminated. Vaccine efficacy and coverage have substantial impacts. Terminating nonpharmaceutical interventions in workplace settings could produce the lowest cost when vaccination programs are taken up at least in the ≥ 10 years age group; this method dominates most intervention strategies due to its lower costs and higher QALYs. According to our findings, nonpharmaceutical interventions might be gradually terminated in Chinese settings.

Herein, we report a visible-light-mediated palladium-catalyzed three-component radical-polar crossover carboamination of 1,3-dienes or allenes with diazo esters and amines, affording unsaturated γ- and ε-amino acid derivatives with diverse structures. In this methodology, the diazo compound readily transforms into a hybrid α-ester alkylpalladium radical with the release of dinitrogen. The radical intermediate selectively adds to the double bond of a 1,3-diene or allene, followed by the allylpalladium radical-polar crossover path and selective allylic substitution with the amine substrate, thereby leading to a single unsaturated γ- or ε-amino acid derivative. This approach proceeds under mild and simple reaction conditions and shows high functional group tolerance, especially in the incorporation of various bioactive molecules. The studies on scale-up reactions and diverse derivatizations highlight the practical utility of this multicomponent reaction protocol.

Drying soil has been conducive to a high frequency of extreme high-temperature events over many regions worldwide in recent decades. However, changes in the intraseasonal variability of soil moisture can also influence the likelihood of extremely high temperatures. Although previous investigators have examined the association between extremely high temperatures and large-scale atmospheric circulation variability, the role of land–atmosphere coupling dominated by soil moisture variability in extremely high temperatures, particularly over the Eurasian continent, is not well understood. In this study, on the basis of the Land Surface, Snow, and Soil Moisture Model Intercomparison Project, we found that land–atmosphere feedback amplified the variability of soil moisture in most regions of Eurasia during summer from 1980 to 2014. This amplification of soil moisture variability is closely correlated with more intensive intraseasonal variability of surface air temperature and more frequent occurrences of extreme high-temperature events, particularly in Europe, Siberia, Northeast Asia, and the Indochina Peninsula. This correlation implies that increasing the intraseasonal variability of soil moisture results in a high likelihood of heat extremes during summer in most parts of Eurasia except Asian desert areas. On the intraseasonal timescale, the land–atmosphere coupling increases the variability of surface sensible heat flux and net long-wave radiation heating the atmosphere by intensifying the soil moisture variability, thus amplifying the variability of surface air temperature and enhancing the extreme high-temperature days. This finding demonstrates the importance of changes in intraseasonal soil moisture variability for the increasing likelihood of heat extremes in summer.

Bisphenol S (BPS) is a typical endocrine disruptor associated with obesity. To observe BPS effects on lipid metabolism in HepG2 and SK-Hep-1 human HCC cells, a CCK-8 assay was used to assess cell proliferation in response to BPS, and the optimal concentration of BPS was selected. Biochemical indices such as triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol (T-CHO), and oxidative stress indices such as malondialdehyde (MDA) and catalase (CAT) were measured. ROS and MDA levels were significantly increased after BPS treatment for 24 h and 48 h (p < 0.05), indicating an oxidative stress response. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), T-CHO, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels also increased significantly after 24 or 48 h BPS treatments (p < 0.05). RT-PCR and Western blot analyses detected mRNA or protein expression levels of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) and sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1c (SREBP1C). The results indicated that BPS could inhibit the mRNA expression of PPARα and carnitine palmitoyl transferase 1B (CPT1B), reduce lipid metabolism, promote mRNA or protein expression of SREBP1C and fatty acid synthase (FASN), and increase lipid synthesis. Increased lipid droplets were observed using morphological Oil Red O staining. Our study demonstrates that BPS may cause lipid accumulation by increasing oxidative stress and perturbing cellular lipid metabolism.

Alternative splicing of ddx4 (DEAD-box helicase 4), a key germline marker gene, has been reported to generate sex-specific transcripts in zebrafish gonads. The biological functions and regulatory mechanisms of the ddx4 ovary-specific transcript (ddx4-L) during oogenesis remain unclear. In this study, we found that ddx4-L mutants, in which ddx4-L was specifically deleted, had enlarged ovaries but laid fewer eggs, along with having a lower fertilization rate compared to WT controls. RNA-seq analysis was performed to detect the changes in gene expression between WT and ddx4-L mutant ovaries. A total of 524 upregulated and 610 downregulated DEGs were identified. GO and GSEA enrichment analyses showed that genes involved in fertilization and reproduction biological processes were significantly downregulated. More specifically, we observed a remarkable reduction in Sycp1, a core component of synaptonemal complex, in ddx4-L mutant ovaries at both the mRNA and protein levels. In addition, the expressions of transposon elements, as well as the events of alternative splicing, alternative polyadenylation, and RNA editing, were analyzed based on the RNA-seq data. We found that the deletion of ddx4-L resulted in derepression of DNA transposons in zebrafish ovaries, possibly causing genome instability. In conclusion, our work demonstrates that the ovary-specific ddx4 transcript plays important roles in oocyte meiosis and DNA transposon repression, which extends our understanding of the biological functions and regulatory mechanisms of sex-specific alternative splicing in zebrafish oogenesis and reproduction.

This work presents a high-sensitivity solution sensor based on a phoxonic crystal nanobeam with lateral fins. The fins improve the stability of the suspended nanobeam and its detection performance is unaffected. Acoustic–optic dual-mode cross-detection improves the detection accuracy over the single-mode method. The acoustic and optical energies are concentrated in the defect and slot regions due to the combination of the gradient cavity and slot, which enhances the acoustic–optic interaction with the object to be measured, improving the detection sensitivity. Using the mode bandgaps of photonic and phononic crystals, the sensing characteristics are investigated using the finite element method. The impact of various concentrations on the transmission spectra of optical electromagnetic waves and acoustic elastic waves is investigated. The maximum sensitivity is 2149.5 kHz/ms−1, with Q of over 105 in the acoustic mode and 457.1 nm/RIU in the optical mode. The proposed nanobeam cavity with lateral fins can be used to realize miniaturized multi-mode acoustic–optic sensors. It also provides mechanical support, thermal transport, and channels for lateral carrier injection for the suspended nanobeam. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV) is the most prevalent pathogen contributing to acute respiratory tract infections (ARTI) in infants and young children and can lead to significant financial and medical costs. Here, we developed a simultaneous, dual-gene and ultrasensitive detection system for typing HRSV within 60 minutes that needs only minimum laboratory support. Briefly, multiplex integrating reverse transcription-recombinase polymerase amplification (RT-RPA) was performed with viral RNA extracted from nasopharyngeal swabs as a template for the amplification of the specific regions of subtypes A (HRSVA) and B (HRSVB) of HRSV. Next, the Pyrococcus furiosus Argonaute (PfAgo) protein utilizes small 5’-phosphorylated DNA guides to cleave target sequences and produce fluorophore signals (FAM and ROX). Compared with the traditional gold standard (RT-qPCR) and direct immunofluorescence assay (DFA), this method has the additional advantages of easy operation, efficiency and sensitivity, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1 copy/μL. In terms of clinical sample validation, the diagnostic accuracy of the method for determining the HRSVA and HRSVB infection was greater than 95%. This technique provides a reliable point-of-care (POC) testing for the diagnosis of HRSV-induced ARTI in children and for outbreak management, especially in resource-limited settings.

Fanconi anemia (FA) is an inheritable disorder that presents with bone marrow failure, developmental anomalies, and an increased susceptibility to cancer. The etiology of this condition stems from a genetic mutation that disrupts the proper repair of interstrand DNA cross-links (ICLs). The resultant dysregulation of the DNA damage response mechanism can induce genomic instability, thereby elevating the mutation rates and the likelihood of developing cancer. The FA pathway assumes a pivotal role in safeguarding genome stability through its involvement in the repair of DNA cross-links and the maintenance of overall genomic integrity. A mutation in the germ line of any of the genes responsible for encoding the FA protein results in the development of FA. The prevalence of aberrant FA gene expression in somatic cancer, coupled with the identification of a connection between FA pathway activation and resistance to chemotherapy, has solidified the correlation between the FA pathway and cancer. Consequently, targeted therapies that exploit FA pathway gene abnormalities are being progressively developed and implemented. This review critically examines the involvement of the FA protein in the repair of ICLs, the regulation of the FA signaling network, and its implications in cancer pathogenesis and prognosis. Additionally, it explores the potential utility of small-molecule inhibitors that target the FA pathway.

Abstract Background Understanding how physicians respond to payment methods is crucial for designing effective incentives and enhancing the insurance system. Previous theoretical research has explored the effects of payment methods on physician behavior based on a two-level incentive path; however, empirical evidence to validate these theoretical frameworks is lacking. To address this research gap, we conducted a laboratory experiment to investigate physicians’ behavioral responses to three types of internal salary incentives based on diagnosis-related-group (DRG) and fee-for-service (FFS). Methods A total of 150 medical students from Capital Medical University were recruited as participants. These subjects played the role of physicians in choosing the quantity of medical services for nine types of patients under three types of salary incentives—fixed wage, constant fixed wage with variable performance wage, and variable fixed wage with variable performance wage, of which performance wage referred to the payment method balance under FFS or DRG. We collected data on the quantities of medical services provided by the participants and analyzed the results using the Friedman test and the fixed effects model. Results The results showed that a fixed wage level did not have a significant impact on physicians’ behavior. However, the patients benefited more under the fixed wage compared to other salary incentives. In the case of a floating wage system, which consisted of a constant fixed wage and a variable performance wage from the payment method balance, an increase in performance wage led to a decrease in physicians’ service provision under DRG but an increase under FFS. Consequently, this resulted in a decrease in patient benefit. When the salary level remained constant, but the composition of the salary varied, physicians’ behavior changed slightly under FFS but not significantly under DRG. Additionally, patient benefits decreased as the ratio of performance wages increased under FFS. Conclusions While using payment method balance as physicians’ salary may be effective in transferring incentives of payment methods to physicians through internal compensation frameworks, it should be used with caution, particularly when the measurement standard of care is imperfect.

Based on the quantum valley Hall effect analogy, this work proposes a phononic crystal plate with ligament-type beams to obtain the topological valley transmission of elastic waves. A pure Bragg degenerate state appears in the high-frequency region with a resonator introduced. By rotating the central scatterer and the beams, the mirror symmetry is broken to form a topological bandgap. Subsequently, this work finds that two selective edge states also appear beside the commonly non-trivial crossing edge states in the topological bandgap by calculating the projected band and eigenvalue spectrum of the supercell with different valley Hall phases phononic crystals. Their appearance is due to band separation of the topological edge states caused by an increase in the rotation angle. Both selective edge states can transmit topologically in specific paths. They will help further to broaden the width of the frequency band of topological transmission. Besides, an elastic wave splitter is designed and demonstrated numerically, which can form two channels and three channels in different frequency bands. With the topological selective edge state disappearing, a topological corner state exists in the edge bandgap. Abstract Background Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) has not been previously utilized to study the prevalence of tinnitus and depression among adults over 20 years old, nor the impact of tinnitus on depression. Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between tinnitus and depression among adults in the United States. Materials and Methods This cross‐sectional study drew upon data from the 2005–2018 NHANES, incorporating adults aged 20 and older who had completed the tinnitus and depression questionnaire. Depression was assessed using the PHQ‐9 questionnaire. Multivariate logistic regression models, subgroup analyses, and sensitivity analyses were performed to examine the association between tinnitus and depression. Abstract Background There is a paucity of research investigating the application of machine learning techniques for distinguishing between lipid-poor adrenal adenoma (LPA) and subclinical pheochromocytoma (sPHEO) based on radiomic features extracted from non-contrast and dynamic contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) scans of the abdomen. Methods We conducted a retrospective analysis of multiphase spiral CT scans, including non-contrast, arterial, venous, and delayed phases, as well as thin- and thick-thickness images from 134 patients with surgically and pathologically confirmed. A total of 52 patients with LPA and 44 patients with sPHEO were randomly assigned to training/testing sets in a 7:3 ratio. Additionally, a validation set was comprised of 22 LPA cases and 16 sPHEO cases from two other hospitals. We used 3D Slicer and PyRadiomics to segment tumors and extract radiomic features, respectively. We then applied T-test and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) to select features. Six binary classifiers, including K-nearest neighbor (KNN), logistic regression (LR), decision tree (DT), random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), and multi-layer perceptron (MLP), were employed to differentiate LPA from sPHEO. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and area under the curve (AUC) values were compared using DeLong’s method. Porcine proliferative enteropathy (PPE), an important infectious disease in pig production caused by an obligate intracellular bacterium Lawsonia intracellularis, is commonly associated with diarrhea and reduced weight gain in growing pigs widespread. An accurate method for detecting L. intracellularis is particularly important for preventing and controlling PPE. Heat shock protein 60 (Hsp60) is an immunodominant bacterial antigen found in all eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms. Thus, the purpose of the current investigation was to produce a novel L. intracellularis Hsp60 monoclonal antibody (mAb) useful for immunodiagnostics. Three hybridomas secreted anti-Hsp60 termed 3E5, 4E2, and 9G6 were generated, and the titers of ascitic fluids of 3E5, 4E2, 9G6 were 1:1 024 000, 1:2 048 000 and 1:2 048 000, respectively. The Western blotting analysis demonstrated that recombinant Hsp60 (rHsp60) was recognized by mAbs 3E5, 4E2 and 9G6. Subsequently, analyses of specificity showed all the mAbs were highly specific to L. intracellularis while could not significantly react with other enteric bacteria commonly found in the ileum of pigs, such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella Choleraesuis, Salmonella Typhimurium, and Brachyspira hyodysenteriae. Furthermore, the mAbs were useful for detecting L. intracellularis in the infected monolayer cells and histological sections of the ileum from PPE-affected pigs. Our research will provide a foundation for the development of immunological diagnostic tests.

Background and purpose: In patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who receive platinum-containing dual-drug chemotherapy with high emetic risk, a significant number of patients experience nausea and vomiting after chemotherapy, even if they are treated with a triple or quadruple antiemetic regimen. The low-frequency electrical stimulator for antiemesis is a wearable electronic antiemesis device, which can effectively reduce nausea and vomiting caused by various reasons. However, no studies have investigated whether the combination of three antiemetic drugs with low-frequency electrical stimulator can further improve the control rate of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV). Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and tolerability of low-frequency electrical stimulator for antiemesis plus standard antiemetics following highly emetogenic chemotherapy in patients with NSCLC. Methods: Data of patients with advanced NSCLC who received first-line hyperemetic chemotherapy at Peking University International Hospital from December 1, 2019 to December 30, 2022 were retrospectively collected. Patients who correctly wore low-frequency electrical stimulator for antiemesis were selected as the observation group, and chemotherapy patients who did not wear low-frequency electrical stimulator were selected as the control group. Clinical characteristics, occurrence of nausea and vomiting after chemotherapy and functional living index-emesis (FLIE) questionnaire were collected. SPSS 20.0 was used for statistical analysis to compare the vomiting complete response rate, nausea incidence and FLIE score between the two groups. Results: Compared with the control group, the no nausea rate (66.3% vs 51.1%, P=0.036) and the complete response rate of vomiting (83.7% vs 66.3%, P=0.006) in experimental group were significantly increased. At 24-120 h after chemotherapy, the complete response rate of vomiting at the delayed stage increased conspicuously in the observation group (88.0% vs 69.6%, P=0.002). At this stage, the proportion of patients without nausea in the observation group was also significantly higher (73.9% vs 57.6%, P=0.020). The total FLIE scores were conspicuously higher in the observation group than in the control group (106.05±15.35 vs 95.04±20.02, P=0.020). Conclusion: The results suggest that, on the basis of the triple antiemesis regimen, wearing the low-frequency electrical stimulator can significantly improve the control level of CINV and the quality of life of NSCLC patients, which can be an effective supplement to the triple antiemesis regimen.

Butyrate has potential beneficial effects on allergic rhinitis (AR). However, the effect of AR mice via the colonic butyrate is still unclear. We investigated the potential mechanism of colonic butyrate derived from butyrylated starch intervention to improve the atopy and regulate gut microbiota in AR mice. The results demonstrated that butyrylated starch significantly increased the levels of colonic butyrate, and downregulated serum OVA-sIgE, IL-4, and IL-5, and improved symptoms in AR mice. In addition, the proportion of Treg cells in mesenteric lymph nodes and the levels of IL-10 and TGF-β in the serum were elevated after butyrylated starch intervention. Moreover, butyrylated starch promoted the enrichment of beneficial genera in AR mice, such as Lactobacillus, and alleviated the composition and structural disorder of gut microbiota in AR mice. In conclusion, butyrylated starch demonstrated a preventive effect on AR, possibly by modulating the gut microbiota and promoting Treg cell function.
