BackgroundAn adrenal collision tumor (ACT) denotes the presence of distinct tumors with diverse behavioral, genetic, and histological features independently co-existing within the adrenal tissue without intermingling, and occurrences of such cases are infrequent. The concurrent occurrence of adrenal schwannoma and adrenal ganglioneuroma is exceedingly rare, and the diagnosis of these ACTs has been notably challenging due to their atypical clinical manifestations and imaging characteristics.Case summaryA 37-year-old man presented to the hospital 3 weeks after a computed tomography (CT) examination that revealed a left adrenal mass. Physical examination findings were unremarkable. Both CT and magnetic resonance imaging scans indicated the presence of a left adrenal mass. Plasma cortisol, adrenocorticotropic hormone, and renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system tests yielded normal results. Preoperative imaging confirmed the diagnosis of left adrenal pheochromocytoma. After thorough surgical preparation, a laparoscopic partial left adrenalectomy was performed. Subsequent postoperative pathological analysis identified adrenal schwannoma in conjunction with adrenal ganglioneuroma. The patient recovered well and was discharged on postoperative day 4. A routine urology clinic visit was included in his postoperative care plan. During follow-up assessments, CT scans of the left adrenal gland revealed no abnormalities.ConclusionAdrenal schwannoma combined with ganglioneuroma represents an exceptionally rare collision tumor characterized by the absence of typical clinical or imaging features, leading to potential misdiagnosis. Adrenal incidentalomas present as multifaceted conditions, and this case serves to heighten awareness of their intricate nature. Due to the challenges in preoperative differentiation of various adrenal mass types, postoperative pathological analysis is imperative for guiding the subsequent treatment course for the patient.

In this study, all species of the leaf-beetle genus Sinoluperus Gressitt & Kimoto, 1963 from China are redescribed based on the reexamination of type specimens, and a new species, S. variegatus sp. nov. from Nanling Mountains, is described. A key to the three Chinese species of Sinoluperus is provided, as well as photographs of the habiti and aedeagi of these species.

Research on green buildings is receiving increasing attention in areas such as mitigating global climate change and promoting sustainability in the built environment. This study is based on the experimental and simulation analysis of embedded composite beam-column elements to investigate their potential in improving the sustainability, structural stability and seismic capacity of lightweight residential buildings. A case study of Tianyuan II villa in Changsha city district, China, is used to demonstrate the proposed methodology and validate the rationality of the design solution. In this case, the conventional hollow steel tube columns were replaced by a novel embedded composite column design derived from an optimized steel-to-wood ratio. This alternative approach aims to improve the load carrying capacity and buckling resistance of the building elements, as well as the overall structural integrity of the building frame, especially under seismic conditions. The study shows that: the overall dimensional stability of the building with this structural column under seismic action is better, the hysteresis curve of the column is full, which reflects a strong seismic wave absorption capacity; the damage is mainly manifested by the fracture of the column foot joints and the tearing caused by the non-uniform contact; and the structural column is able to replace the pure steel columns and to ensure the safety and stability of the building.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a behaviorally defined complex neurodevelopmental syndrome characterized by persistent social communication and interaction deficit. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a promising and emerging tool for the intervention of ASD by reducing both core and associate symptoms. Several reviews have been published regarding TMS-based ASD treatment, however, a systematic review on study characteristics, specific stimulating parameters, localization techniques, stimulated targets, behavioral outcomes, and neuroimage biomarker changes is lagged behind since 2018. Here, we performed a systematic search on literatures published after 2018 in PubMed, Web of Science, and Science Direct. After screening, the final systematic review included 17 articles, composing seven randomized controlled trial studies and ten open-label studies. Two studies are double-blind, while the other studies have a moderate to high risk of bias attributing to inadequate subject- and evaluator-blinding to treatment allocation. Five studies utilize theta-burst stimulation mode, and the others apply repetitive TMS with low frequency (five studies), high frequency (six studies), and combined low and high frequency stimulation (one study). Most researchers prioritize the bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal lobe as stimulation target, while parietal lobule, inferior parietal lobule, and posterior superior temporal sulci have also emerged as new targets of attention. One third of the studies use neuronavigation based on anatomical magnetic resonance imaging to locate the stimulation target. After TMS intervention, discernible enhancements across a spectrum of scales are evident in stereotyped behavior, repetitive behavior, and verbal social domains. A comprehensive review of literature spanning the last five years demonstrates the potential of TMS treatment for ASD in ameliorating the clinical core symptoms.

AIM: To explore the brain mechanism of acupuncture for children with anisometropic amblyopia using the voxel-mirror homotopic connectivity (VMHC) analysis method of resting functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) technology based on clinical effectiveness. METHODS: Eighty children with anisometropic monocular amblyopia were randomly divided into two groups: control (40 cases, 1 case of shedding) and acupuncture (40 cases, 1 case of shedding) groups. The control group was treated with glasses, red flash, grating, and visual stimulations, with each procedure conducted for 5min per time. Based on routine treatment, the acupuncture group underwent acupuncture of “regulating qi and unblocking meridians to bright eyes”, Jingming (BL1), Cuanzhu (BL2), Guangming (GB37), Fengchi (GB20) acupoints were taken on both sides, with the needle kept for 30min each time. Both groups were treated once every other day, three times per week, for a total of 4wk. After the treatment, the overall curative effect of the two groups and the latency and amplitude changes of P100 wave of pattern visual-evoked potential were counted. At the same time, nine children with left eye amblyopia were randomly selected from the two groups and were scanned with rs-fMRI before and after treatment. The differences in the brain regions between the two groups were compared and analyzed with VMHC. RESULTS: Chi-square test showed a notable difference in the total efficiency rate between the acupuncture (94.87%) and control groups (79.49%). Regarding the P100 wave latency and amplitude, the acupuncture group had significantly shorter latency and higher amplitude of P100 wave than the control group. Moreover, the VMHC values of the bilateral temporal lobe, superior temporal gyrus, and middle temporal gyrus were notably increased in the acupuncture group after treatment. CONCLUSION: Acupuncture combined with conventional treatment can significantly improve the corrected visual acuity and optic nerve conduction in children with anisometropic amblyopia. Compared with the conventional treatment, the regulation of acupuncture on the functional activities of the relevant brain areas in the anterior cerebellum may be an effective acupuncture mechanism for anisometropic amblyopia.

Abstract Background Para-dichlorobenzene (p-DCB) exposure associated with oxidative stress has indeed raised public concerns. However, whether p-DCB is linked with metabolic syndrome (MetS) remains unclear. We hypothesized that higher exposure to p-DCB would be linked with a higher risk of MetS in the U.S population. This study aimed to examine the associations of exposure to p-DCB with MetS prevalence. Methods We included 10,428 participants (5,084 men and 5,344 women), aged ≥ 20 years, from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2003–2016). The cases of MetS were diagnosed by NCEP/ATPIII. Logistic regression models were conducted to calculate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of MetS prevalence. Moreover, the mix associations of p-DCB metabolites were assessed using quantile sum (WQS) regression and quantile g-computation (qgcomp) methods. Results We documented 2,861 (27.1%) MetS cases. After adjustment for the potential risk factors, the ORs (95% CI) of MetS prevalence across the quartile of urinary 2,5-dichlorophenol (2,5-DCP) were 1.09 (0.93-1.28), 1.22 (1.00-1.49), and 1.34 (1.04-1.73). Moreover, 2,5 DCP is significantly associated with a higher prevalence of abdominal obesity [ORQ4vsQ1 (95% CI): 1.23 (1.03-1.48)]. The WQS and qgcomp index also showed significant associations between p-DCB metabolites and MetS. Background Early detection and treatment are crucial for reducing gastrointestinal tumour-related mortality. The diagnostic efficiency of the most commonly used diagnostic markers for gastric cancer (GC) is not very high. A single laboratory test cannot meet the requirements of early screening, and machine learning methods are needed to aid the early diagnosis of GC by combining multiple indicators. Methods Based on the XGBoost algorithm, a new model was developed to distinguish between GC and precancerous lesions in newly admitted patients between 2018 and 2023 using multiple laboratory tests. We evaluated the ability of the prediction score derived from this model to predict early GC. In addition, we investigated the efficacy of the model in correctly screening for GC given negative protein tumour marker results. Results The XHGC20 model constructed using the XGBoost algorithm could distinguish GC from precancerous disease well (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve [AUC] = 0.901), with a sensitivity, specificity and cut-off value of 0.830, 0.806 and 0.265, respectively. The prediction score was very effective in the diagnosis of early GC. When the cut-off value was 0.27, and the AUC was 0.888, the sensitivity and specificity were 0.797 and 0.807, respectively. The model was also effective at evaluating GC given negative conventional markers (AUC = 0.970), with the sensitivity and specificity of 0.941 and 0.906, respectively, which helped to reduce the rate of missed diagnoses. Conclusions The XHGC20 model established by the XGBoost algorithm integrates information from 20 clinical laboratory tests and can aid in the early screening of GC, providing a useful new method for auxiliary laboratory diagnosis.

Insect male genitalia show an evolutionarily variable morphology that is valuable for both species identification and phylogenetic analyses. However, we often encounter some difficulties when conducting relevant studies due to only quantitative variations exhibited in male genitalia. In this study, based on the taxonomy of the Macrolycus dotatus species group (a total of seven species, including three new species described here), we analyzed the male genitalia shapes by GM and then constructed the phenotypic relationships by UPGMA, NJ and MP analyses. The results demonstrated that the species could be well delineated by the shape of male genitalia, and the produced phenograms frequently recovered phenotypic similarity between the coupled species, including M. atronotatimimus sp. nov. + M. huoditangensis sp. nov. and M. aemulus + M. dotatus, which is useful for making comparisons in species descriptions. Meanwhile, the MP analysis of male genitalia shape using two landmark configurations is considered reliable in inferring the phylogenetic relationship among species in terms of the consistency between its topologies and the molecular phylogeny. This study sheds new light on improving the morphological taxonomy of insects in lower grades while fully utilizing the taxonomic value of male genitalia in a phylogenetic context.

BackgroundEctopic tissue is rarely found in the bladder for adults. Currently, there have been reports of ectopic prostate and colon tissue in the bladder. These ectopic tissues are manifested as a bladder mass and cause lower urinary tract symptoms. However, the ectopic corpus cavernosum in the bladder has never been reported, and its clinical characteristics and treatment have not been explored yet.Case summaryA 3-year-old boy was admitted to the hospital due to 1 month of urinary frequency. The physical examination was unremarkable. Urine analysis from other hospitals showed an elevated urine white blood cell count of 17.9/ul. In addition, ultrasound indicated a possible bladder mass. CT and MRI showed a well-margined lesion (1.9×1.9 cm) in the bladder trigone. Through preoperative imaging, we diagnosed a bladder tumor (inclined towards benign). The transurethral resection of the bladder tumor was performed. Unfortunately, the surgery was unsuccessful due to the difficulty in removing the excised tissue through the urethra. Subsequently, bladder incision and tumor resection were performed. The tumor was successfully removed. Surprisingly, the postoperative pathology showed that the tumor tissue was corpus cavernosum. The pathological diagnosis was ectopic corpus cavernosum in the bladder. No complications were found after the operation, and no recurrence was observed during follow-up.ConclusionThe ectopic corpus cavernosum in the bladder has never been reported for children, which is presented as a benign tumor with rapid proliferation and large size. Surgery is recommended. However, the transurethral resection of bladder tumors is difficult to perform due to narrow urethra and limited surgical instruments. Bladder incision and tumor resection may be preferred.

In this study, 21 species of the leaf-beetle genus Aplosonyx in China are described, including three new species, Aplosonyx ancorella sp. nov., Aplosonyx nigricornis sp. nov. and Aplosonyx wudangensis sp. nov., and 1 new record, Aplosonyx duvivieri Jacoby, 1900. Additionally, Aplosonyx ancora fulvescens Chen, 1964 is elevated to species. A key to the Chinese species of Aplosonyx is provided.

Objective To explore the relationships among pharyngeal airway morphology, craniocervical posture, and anterior teeth position in hyperdivergent skeletal Class Ⅱ female adults and provide a reference for orthodontic clinical diagnosis and treatment. Methods Lateral cephalometric radiographs of 104 untreated skeletal Class Ⅱ (ANB ≥ 4.7°) female adults were included and divided into a hyperdivergent group (MP-SN ˃ 37°) (n = 52) and a normodivergent group (29° ≤ MP-SN ≤ 37°) (n = 52) by mandibular plane angle.
