Com a expansão nacional da proposta do Estágio Nacional de Extensão em Comunidades (ENEC) através da parceria junto ao Ministério da Saúde e ao Fórum de Pró-Reitores de Extensão das Universidades Públicas Brasileiras, conforme a linha do Projeto Vivências e Estágios em Educação Popular em Saúde (VEPOP) e dentro do projeto VER-SUS Extensão, surge a necessídade de grande solidariedade no fluxo de conhecimentos e saberes entre as localidades onde já acontecem as propostas de ações extensionistas reflexivas norteadas pela metodologia do trabalho de Mobilização Coletiva e Individual (Met-MOCI), desenvolvida a partir da síntese de vinte anos de trabalhos de extensão comunitária na Universidade Federal da Paraíba (UFPB) e aquelas onde a proposta está em vias de implantação. Assim, este instrumento metodológico se desdobra em quatro eixos que visam trabalhar questões que vão desde programas de organização interna dos trabalhos, até a busca de parcerias, tanto junto aos movimentos sociais como às grandes instituições formais, além, claro, de contribuir na sistematização dos diálogos iniciais junto aos atores sociais das comunidades. A expectativa é que este instrumento metodológico seja um catalisador para os trabalhos de extensão apoiados pela iniciativa do VEPOP e que estes possam ser ensaios de experiências que inovem na amostragem de formas de se integrar ensino e pesquisa a partir da extensão universitária, construindo novas bases de como se gerar conhecimento acadêmico, dialógico e interativo com a dinâmica da sociedade civil brasileira, principalmente naqueles setores nos quais se concentram as classes sociais subalternas.

The article presents the results of a study which investigated the impact of caffeine and exercise on muscle damage in soccer players. Details of the experimental protocol are provided, which involved a placebo-controlled double-blind test on a subject group of 15 professional male soccer players. It was found that caffeine supplementation did not significantly affect markers of muscle damage derived from blood sample analysis.

The purpose of this study was to assess differences in mental health symptoms, pandemic-related concerns, and maladaptive coping behaviors among adults in the United States across generations during the initial period of the COVID-19 pandemic. A social media campaign was used to recruit 2696 U.S. individuals to participate in an online survey in April 2020, assessing various validated psychosocial factors, including major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), perceived stress, loneliness, quality of life, and fatigue, along with pandemic-specific concerns and changes in alcohol use and substance use. Participants were grouped based on generation status (Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X, and Baby Boomer) and statistical comparisons were conducted based on demographics, psychosocial factors, pandemic-related concerns, and substance use. During the initial period of the COVID-19 pandemic, the younger cohorts (Gen Z and Millennials) rated significantly worse on mental health indices, including major depression, GAD, perceived stress, loneliness, quality of life, and fatigue. Further, the participants in the Gen Z and Millennial generational groups exhibited greater increase in maladaptive coping with substance use, specifically alcohol use and increased use of sleep aids. Our results indicate that during the initial period of the COVID-19 pandemic, members of the Gen Z and Millennial generational cohorts were considered a psychologically vulnerable population due to their mental health and maladaptive coping behaviors. Background: Patients undergoing cardiac surgery can experience functional impairment., Objective: Assess the influence of Perme Score on the intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay in patients after cardiac surgery. As a secondary objective, investigate if preoperative variables can predict the patient's mobility status after surgery., Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted in ICU in a university hospital. The mobility status (Perme Score) was collected from the first postoperative day until ICU discharge. The preoperative assessment of respiratory muscle strength, pulmonary function, and handgrip strength were collected., Results: A total of 44 patients, mean age of 62.3 years, 28 men were included in the study. A high Perme Score on the second postoperative day among patients who underwent Coronary artery bypass grafting and the third postoperative day on three types of intervention (Coronary artery bypass grafting, valve replacement, or both simultaneously) was associated with shorter ICU length of stay). The preoperative pulmonary function was one of the main independent predictors of mobility status on the first three days of ICU stay, in addition to left ventricular ejection fraction and cardiopulmonary bypass time on the first day, age, and left ventricular ejection fraction on the second day and maximum expiratory pressure on third day., Conclusion: An increase in mobility status (Perme Score), mainly on the third postoperative day, reduced the ICU stay, mainly influenced by preoperative pulmonary function., Competing Interests: Conflict of interest: authors declare that they have no conflict of interest, (Copyright © 2022 Colombia Medica.)

Background: Malocclusion is a condition frequently seen in primary dentition due to the interaction of environmental, genetic and behavioural factors. The occurrence of some types of malocclusions can have an impact on oral health-related quality of life in children. Hence, the present study aimed to verify the impact of primary dentition malocclusion on oral health-related quality of life in preschool children., Methods: A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Florianopolis, Brazil, with a representative sample of 1050 preschoolers aged between 2 and 5 years, randomly selected. Parents answered the Brazilian version of the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale and also to a questionnaire on socio-economic indicators. Data obtained from the questionnaire were obtained by item response theory based on model of gradual response. The malocclusion assessed was: anterior open bite, increased overjet and posterior crossbite. Poisson regression model was employed for multivariate analysis (P < 0.05)., Results: Malocclusion was observed in 36.7% of the children. Of these, 11.4% were anterior open bite, 67.2% were increased overjet, and 21.4% were posterior crossbite. Malocclusion's impact on oral health-related quality of life was 28.6%. In children aged 4-5 years, the prevalence of malocclusion's impact on quality of life was 49.5% higher than in children aged 2-3 years. Statistical analysis showed that preschool children with malocclusion showed no significant impact on quality of life., Conclusions: The findings of the present study indicate that the occurrence of primary dentition malocclusion has no impact on the quality of life of children aged 2-5 years., (© 2021. Background and Purpose: PDE inhibitors such as sildenafil alleviate lower urinary tract symptoms; however, a complete understanding of their action on the bladder remains unclear. We are investigating the effects of sildenafil, on post and preganglionic nerve-mediated contractions of the mouse bladder, and neuronal and urothelial ATP release., Experimental Approach: Bladders were used from young (12 weeks), aged (24 months), and spinal cord transected (SCT), mice, for in vitro contractility experiments. An arterially perfused in situ whole mouse model was used to record bladder pressure. Nerve-mediated contractions were generated by electrical field stimulation (EFS) of postganglionic nerve terminals or the pelvic nerve. ATP release during EFS in intact detrusor strips, and during stretch of isolated mucosa strips, was measured using a luciferin-luciferase assay., Key Results: Sildenafil (20 μM) inhibited nerve-mediated contractions in young mice, with an increase in f 1/2 values in force-frequency relationships, demonstrating a greater effect at low frequencies. Sildenafil reduced the atropine-resistant, purinergic component of nerve-mediated contractions, and suppressed neuronal ATP release upon EFS in vitro. Sildenafil reduced the preganglionic pelvic nerve stimulated bladder pressure recordings in situ; comparable to in vitro experiments. Sildenafil reduced stretch-induced urothelial ATP release. Sildenafil also relaxed nerve-mediated contractions in aged and SCT mice., Conclusion and Implications: Sildenafil has a greater effect on the low-frequency, purinergic-mediated contractions and suppresses neuronal ATP release. In addition, sildenafil reduces stretch-induced urothelial ATP release. These results demonstrate a novel action of sildenafil to selectively inhibit ATP release from nerve terminals innervating detrusor smooth muscle and the urothelium., (© 2019 The Authors. Purpose: To characterise in vivo the structure of bacterial communities in decayed and sound primary teeth., Materials and Methods: Samples of biofilms were collected from three groups of patients with complete and exclusively primary dentition (n = 45): G1: sound teeth (n = 15); G2: enamel lesion (n = 15); G3: dentin lesion (n = 15). DNA was extracted (CTAB 2%) from the biofilm, the partial 16S rRNA gene was amplified with Bacteria Universal Primers (BA338fGC - UN518r) and subjected to DGGE (denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis). Multidimensional scaling and ANOSIM (analysis of similarity) were employed to determine the structure of the bacterial communities. The amplicon richness was determined by averaging amplicons, with the differences between treatments determined with ANOVA, while means were compared using Tukey's test (p < 0.05)., Results: Compared to sound teeth, a greater variety of bacterial communities was found in decayed teeth. Despite the differences between the bacterial communities of sound teeth and decayed teeth, the Venn diagram showed that the samples had 38 amplicons in common. Greater amplicon richness was observed in samples of decayed teeth (enamel: 20.5 ± 2.7; dentin: 20.1 ± 2.8) compared with the sound samples (12.0 ± 4.3) (p <0.05), indicating enhanced growth for specific groups of bacteria on decayed teeth., Conclusion: Although there is less bacterial diversity on sound than ECC-decayed teeth, the bacterial communities are very similar.

The genomic sequences of 20 Leishmania infantum isolates collected in northeastern Brazil were compared with each other and with the available genomic sequences of 29 L. infantum/donovani isolates from Nepal and Turkey. The Brazilian isolates were obtained in the early 1990s or since 2009 from patients with visceral or non-ulcerating cutaneous leishmaniasis, asymptomatic humans, or dogs with visceral leishmaniasis. Two isolates were from the blood and bone marrow of the same visceral leishmaniasis patient. All 20 genomic sequences display 99.95% identity with each other and slightly less identity with a reference L. infantum genome from a Spanish isolate. Despite the high identity, analysis of individual differences among the 32 million base pair genomes showed sufficient variation to allow the isolates to be clustered based on the primary sequence. A major source of variation detected was in chromosome somy, with only four of the 36 chromosomes being predominantly disomic in all 49 isolates examined. In contrast, chromosome 31 was predominantly tetrasomic/pentasomic, consistent with its regions of synteny on two different disomic chromosomes of Trypanosoma brucei. In the Brazilian isolates, evidence for recombination was detected in 27 of the 36 chromosomes. Clustering analyses suggested two populations, in which two of the five older isolates from the 1990s clustered with a majority of recent isolates. Overall the analyses do not suggest individual sequence variants account for differences in clinical outcome or adaptation to different hosts. For the first known time, DNA of isolates from asymptomatic subjects were sequenced. Of interest, these displayed lower diversity than isolates from symptomatic subjects, an observation that deserves further investigation with additional isolates from asymptomatic subjects., (Copyright © 2017 Australian Society for Parasitology. The distribution of mosquito species in Rio Grande do Norte state, Brazil, was compiled from published data mid-2016 and a review of specimens deposited in the entomological collection of the Entomology Laboratory of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. The existing records exist for 40 of the 167 municipalities in the state. The specimens in the Entomology Laboratory were collected using Shannon traps and by active search for immature individuals and from aquatic habitats using standard methods, in preserved Atlantic Forest and Caatinga remnants, located in urban and rural areas of the state. In total were recorded 76 species distributed into 25 subgenera, 15 genera, nine tribes, and two subfamilies, in addition to 15 new species records for the state., (© The Authors 2017. An early childhood carie (ECC) is an extremely destructive form of tooth decay. The aim of this study was to investigate the action of ozone (O3), and the association of sodium fluoride (NaF) with chlorhexidine (CHX) on bacteria related to ECC. Overnight culture of the bacteria was performed. On exponential phase the suspension was adjusted (101-108 CFU/mL). A drop (10μL) of each concentration of bacteria was applied on sheep blood agar plates and treated with O3 (2, 20, 200, and 2,000 ppm); after 18 hours, recovery analysis of CFU verified the reduction of bacterial activity. For NaF-CHX, sterile 96-well plates were prepared and divided into groups: G1 (150 µL TSB); G2 (20 µL of bacteria + 25 µL CHX + 25 µL NaF); and G3 (150 µL TSB + 20 µL of bacteria + 50 µL water). The plates were verified by analysis of the optical density (0, 12, 14, 16, and 18 hours). The data from O3 test were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey's test (p < 0.05). For the data from NaF-CHX, the ANOVA 2-way and Bonferroni's test (p < 0.05) were used. The number of CFU/mL showed death > 3log10 (99.9%) for all bacteria (ozone ≥ 20ppm), while the combination of NaF-CHX was more effective (p < 0.001) compared to each substance tested alone and the control group. The antimicrobial agents tested were able to inhibit all bacteria tested; O3 seemed to be a good alternative for controlling progression of carious lesions, while the association of NaF-CHX showed to be a good antimicrobial with easy and inexpensive application.

Dengue fever, currently the most important arbovirus, is transmitted by the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Given the absence of a prophylactic vaccine, the disease can only be controlled by combating the vector insect. However, increasing reports of resistance and environmental damage caused by insecticides have led to the urgent search for new safer alternatives. In this regard, plants stand out as a source of easy-to-obtain biodegradable insecticide molecules. Twenty (20) plant seed extracts from the Caatinga, an exclusively Brazilian biome, were prepared. Sodium phosphate (50 mM, pH 8.0) was used as extractor. The extracts were used in bioassays and submitted to partial characterisation. A Probit analysis of insecticides was carried out, and intergroup differences were verified by the Student's t test and ANOVA. All the extracts exhibited larvicidal and ovipositional deterrence activity. The extracts of Amburana cearenses, Piptadenia viridiflora, Erythrina velutina, Myracrodruon urundeuva and Schinopsis brasiliensis were also pupicides, while the extracts of P. viridiflora, E. velutina, A. cearenses, Anadenanthera colubrina, Diocleia grandiflora, Bauhinia cheilantha, Senna spectabilis, Caesalpinia pyramidalis, Mimosa regnelli and Genipa americana displayed adulticidal activity. Egg laying was compromised when females were fed extracts of Ricinus communis, Croton sonderianus and S. brasiliensis. At least two proteins with insecticidal activity were found in all the extracts. Phenol compounds were identified in all the extracts and flavonoids, triterpenes or alkaloids in 14 of them. The results show the potential of plant seed extracts from the Caatinga as a source of active molecules against A. aegypti mosquitos.

Pyogenic granuloma (PG) is a rare, benign, vascular, hyperplasic, soft tissue lesion caused by diverse factors, including traumatic injuries. This article presents a case involving the surgical removal of PG on the tongue of a 4-year-old boy who had difficulty with speech and eating because of the tongue lesion. The parents reported that the child had the habit of nibbling on and sucking his tongue. The lesion was excised and histopathological analysis confirmed the diagnosis of PG; however, because the child continued to nibble and suck on his tongue, the lesion recurred. A second surgery was performed with the same histopathological diagnosis. At a one-year follow-up, the child had ceased his tongue habits, and no recurrence was seen.

This study evaluated the efficacy of 2 final irrigation solutions for removal of the smear layer (SL) from root canals of primary teeth, using scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis. Thirty primary molars were selected and a single operator instrumented the canals. The initial irrigation was done with a 1% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) solution. After the preparation, the roots were randomly divided into 3 groups for final irrigation: Group 1, 1% NaOCl (n = 10); Group 2, 17% EDTA + 1% NaOCl (n = 10); and Group 3, 17% EDTA + saline solution (n = 10). The roots were prepared for SEM analysis (magnification 1000X). The photomicrographs were independently analyzed by 2 investigators with SEM experience, attributing scores to each root third in terms of SL removal. Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests revealed that there was no statistical difference between the groups (P = 0.489). However, a statistical difference was found (P < 0.05) in a comparison of root thirds, with the apical third having the worst results. Comparing the thirds within the same group, all canals showed statistical differences between the cervical and apical thirds (P < 0.05). The authors determined that no substance or association of substances were able to completely remove SL.
