Remote-sensed vegetation indices (VIs) have emerged as essential tools for retrieving forest chlorophyll concentration. Although VIs are widely used, some concerns regarding VIs for estimating chlorophyll remain to be addressed, such as saturation effect, leaf area index (LAI) disturbance, and soil brightness influence. Currently, a systematic study on such performance evaluation of chlorophyll-related VIs considering these issues is still insufficient. This study coupled two radiative transfer models, the PROSPECT model and the LESS model, to simulate Eucalyptus monocultures with different chlorophyll content and systematically evaluated the 18 broad-band VIs’ ability in chlorophyll estimation at different scales. Our results indicate that most VIs designed for chlorophyll estimation were relatively resistant to saturation, except for SIPI and some classical VIs (e.g., NDVI and DVI), which were insensitive to chlorophyll decreases and tended to reach saturation quickly (when leaf chlorophyll content (LCC) exceeded 40 ug/cm2). The relationships between NDVI, SR, DVI, and LCC were easily influenced by soil brightness and LAI. S2REP, MTCI, TGI, TCARI, and EVI were insensitive to soil brightness when estimating LCC. Overall, S2REP was best at quantitatively retrieving chlorophyll and resisting interference from other factors. For practical applications, our study suggests that it is preferable to use S2REP for LCC estimation when the red-edge band is available; otherwise, CVI can be used instead. The judicious utilization of VI can effectively depict chlorophyll levels and improve the understanding of vegetation response to climate change. Our findings provide the necessary information for the selection of specific VIs tailored to specific vegetation parameters.

As China has recently launched the GaoFen-1 satellite (GF-1) carrying on the wide-field view (WFV) sensor, it is a challenging task to make full use of its observations to produce the fractional vegetation cover (FVC). In light of this, our study presents a comprehensive algorithm to generate a 16 m/10-day FVC product by considering the vegetation types characteristics. For forests, considering the foliage clumping effect, FVC was estimated from the gap probability theory using GF-1 leaf area index (LAI) and clumping index (CI) as a priori knowledge; for non-forests, FVC was estimated from the dimidiate pixel model using GF-1 normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). The performance of GF-1 FVC from 2018 to 2020 was evaluated using FVC ground measurements obtained from 7 sites for crops, grasslands, and forests in China. The direct validation indicated that the performance of the FVC product was satisfactory, as evidenced by R2 = 0.55, RMSE = 0.15 and BIAS = 0.01 for all vegetation types. Furthermore, the GF-1 FVC exhibited better performance compared to the GEOV3 FVC at a spatial resolution of 300 meters. Moreover, the 10-day temporal interval of GF-1 FVC product successfully facilitated the extraction of regional phenological information at a spatial resolution of 16 meters.

The vegetation canopy clumping index (CI) is an important indicator for understanding radiative transport processes, radiation interception, and the photosynthesis of vegetation canopies. However, most studies consider CI only in the nadir or specific direction. In this study, we analyze the directional characteristics of the CI based on RAMI-V (radiation transfer model intercomparison) activity, which represents most typical canopies. The directional gap fraction and CI of these scenes are accurately calculated based on the LESS (large-scale remote sensing data and image simulation framework) model. According to our results, the directional characteristics of the CI are affected by many factors, such as vegetation type, season, and canopy structure. Generally, the CI of a coniferous forest varies little with zenith angle, while the CI of a broad-leaf forest demonstrates the different trend. In winter, the CI is smaller than that in summer, and the variation in the CI at the zenith angle is less. The row structure scenes exhibit different directional characteristics along and perpendicular to the row direction, and their CIs tend to increase with zenith angle. To accurately model the directional CI, we propose a modified Gompertz function model. Compared with other directional CI models, this model has the advantages of high precision and strong applicability (R2 = 0.975). By studying the directional characteristics of CI, we can enhance the usability of radiative transfer modeling and the accuracy of canopy biophysical parameter retrieval for vegetation with different structures.

Abstract Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data can provide 3D structural information of objects and are ideal for extracting individual tree parameters, and individual tree segmentation (ITS) is a vital step for this purpose. Various ITS methods have been emerging from airborne LiDAR scanning (ALS) or unmanned aerial vehicle LiDAR scanning (ULS) data. Here, we propose a new individual tree segmentation method, which couples the classical and efficient watershed algorithm (WS) and the newly developed connection center evolution (CCE) clustering algorithm in pattern recognition. The CCE is first used in ITS and comprehensively optimized by considering tree structure and point cloud characteristics. Firstly, the amount of data is greatly reduced by mean shift voxelization. Then, the optimal clustering scale is automatically determined by the shapes in the projection of three different directions. We select five forest plots in Saihanba, China and 14 public plots in Alpine region, Europe with ULS or ALS point cloud densities from 11 to 3295 pts/m2. Eleven ITS methods were used for comparison. The accuracy of tree top detection and tree height extraction is estimated by five and two metrics, respectively. The results show that the matching rate (Rmatch) of tree tops is up to 0.92, the coefficient of determination (R2) of tree height estimation is up to .94, and the minimum root mean square error (RMSE) is 0.6 m. Our method outperforms the other methods especially in the broadleaf forests plot on slopes, where the five evaluation metrics for tree top detection outperformed the other algorithms by at least 11% on average. Our ITS method is both robust and efficient and has the potential to be used especially in coniferous forests to extract the structural parameters of individual trees for forest management, carbon stock estimation, and habitat mapping.

Fractional vegetation cover (FVC) is a critical biophysical parameter that characterizes the status of terrestrial ecosystems. The spatial resolutions of most existing FVC products are still at the kilometer level. However, there is growing demand for FVC products with high spatial and temporal resolutions in remote sensing applications. This study developed an operational method to generate 30-m/15-day FVC products over China. Landsat datasets were employed to generate a continuous normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) time series based on the Google Earth Engine platform from 2010 to 2020. The NDVI was transformed to FVC using an improved vegetation index (VI)-based mixture model, which quantitatively calculated the pixelwise coefficients to transform the NDVI to FVC. A comparison between the generated FVC, the Global LAnd Surface Satellite (GLASS) FVC, and a global FVC product (GEOV3 FVC) indicated consistent spatial patterns and temporal profiles, with a root mean square deviation (RMSD) value near 0.1 and an R2 value of approximately 0.8. Direct validation was conducted using ground measurements from croplands at the Huailai site and forests at the Saihanba site. Additionally, validation was performed with the FVC time series data observed at 151 plots in 22 small watersheds. The generated FVC showed a reasonable accuracy (RMSD values of less than 0.10 for the Huailai and Saihanba sites) and temporal trajectories that were similar to the field-measured FVC (RMSD values below 0.1 and R2 values of approximately 0.9 for most small watersheds). The proposed method outperformed the traditional VI-based mixture model and had the practicability and flexibility to generate the FVC at different resolutions and at a large scale.

The bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) of the land surface contains information relating to its physical structure and composition. Accurate BRDF modeling for heterogeneous pixels is important for global ecosystem monitoring and radiation balance studies. However, the original kernel-driven models, which many operational BRDF/Albedo algorithms have adopted, do not explicitly consider the heterogeneity within heterogeneous pixels, which may result in large fitting residuals. In this paper, we attempted to improve the fitting ability of the kernel-driven models over heterogeneous pixels by changing the inversion approach and proposed a dynamic weighted least squares (DWLS) inversion approach. The performance of DWLS and the traditional ordinary least squares (OLS) inversion approach were compared using simulated data. We also evaluated its ability to reconstruct multiangle satellite observations and provide accurate BRDF using unmanned aerial vehicle observations. The results show that the developed DWLS approach improves the accuracy of modeled BRDF of heterogeneous pixels. The DWLS approach applied to satellite observations shows better performance than the OLS method in study regions and exhibits smaller mean fitting residuals both in the red and near-infrared bands. The DWLS approach also shows higher BRDF modeling accuracy than the OLS approach with unmanned aerial vehicle observations. These results indicate that the DWLS inversion approach can be a better choice when kernel-driven models are used for heterogeneous pixels.

Radiative transfer (RT) simulation based on reconstructed 3-dimensional (3D) vegetation scenarios can promote the validation and development of various retrieval algorithms to monitor the growing states of vegetation in large-scale, multi-angular, and multi-sensor ways. The radiation transfer model intercomparison (RAMI) has made great contributions to providing abstract and actual 3D vegetation scenarios, and to the benchmarking of RT models under developed evaluation systems. To date, RAMI has been updated to the fifth phase (RAMI-V). In this study, we try to implement explicit conversion from all the RAMI-V scenes to generic structural models in the Wavefront OBJ format. These reconstructed scenes are applied in the LESS RT model to probe the ability of its RT solvers to simulate all sorts of remote sensing observations and radiative budget, including the bidirectional reflectance factor (BRF), albedo, fraction of photosynthetically active radiation absorbed by vegetation, and threshold hemispherical photograph (THP). BRF simulations fully explain angle effects as well as variation and robustness of the normalized difference vegetation index. Energy conservation is well validated between simulated absorption and albedo. The gap fraction derived from THP is analyzed in directional and total situations. In addition, this paper guides us how to simplify basic geometries and tune the illumination resolution (0.02 is optimal) to balance the simulation accuracy and efficiency. The generic structural models and reliable simulation results can be referenced by other RT models and retrieval algorithms.

As an essential vegetation structural parameter, leaf area index (LAI) is involved in many critical biochemical processes, such as photosynthesis, respiration, and precipitation interception. The MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) LAI sequence products have long supported various global climate, biogeochemistry, and energy flux research. These applications all rely on the accuracy of the product's long time series. However, uncontrolled interferences (e.g., adverse observation conditions and sensor uncertainties) potentially introduce substantial uncertainties to time series in product applications. As one of the most sensitive areas in response to global climate change, the Tibet Plateau (TP) has been treated as a crucial testing ground for thousands of studies on vegetation. To ensure the credibility of the studies arising from MODIS/VIIRS LAI products, the temporal quality uncertainties of data need to be clarified. This article proposed a method to revisit the temporal stability of the MODIS (MOD and MYD) and VIIRS (VNP) LAI in the TP, expecting to provide useful information for better accounting for the uncertainties in this area. Results show that the MODIS and VIIRS LAI were relatively stable in time series and available to be used continuously, among which the temporal quality of the MODIS LAI was the most stable. Moreover, the MODIS and VIIRS LAI products performed similarly in both time-series stability and time-series anomaly distribution, magnitudes and fluctuations. The time-series stability evaluation strategy applied to the MODIS and VIIRS LAI can also be employed to other remote sensing products.

Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is a widely used technology for the acquisition of three-dimensional (3D) information about a wide variety of physical objects and environments. However, before conducting a campaign, a test is typically conducted to assess the potential of the utilized algorithm for information retrieval. It might not be a real campaign but rather a simulation to save time and costs. Here, a multi-platform LiDAR simulation model considering the location, direction, and wavelength of each emitted laser pulse was developed based on the large-scale remote sensing (RS) data and image simulation framework (LESS) model, which is a 3D radiative transfer model for simulating passive optical remote sensing signals using the ray tracing algorithm. The LESS LiDAR simulator took footprint size, returned energy, multiple scattering, and multispectrum LiDAR into account. The waveform and point similarity were assessed with the LiDAR module of the discrete anisotropic radiative transfer (DART) model. Abstract and realistic scenes were designed to assess the simulated LiDAR waveforms and point clouds. A waveform comparison in the abstract scene with the DART LiDAR module showed that the relative error was lower than 1%. In the realistic scene, airborne and terrestrial laser scanning were simulated by LESS and DART LiDAR modules. Their coefficients of determination ranged from 0.9108 to 0.9984. Their mean was 0.9698. The number of discrete returns fitted well and the coefficient of determination was 0.9986. A terrestrial point cloud comparison in the realistic scene showed that the coefficient of determination between the two sets of data could reach 0.9849. The performance of the LESS LiDAR simulator was also compared with the DART LiDAR module and HELIOS++. The results showed that the LESS LiDAR simulator is over three times faster than the DART LiDAR module and HELIOS++ when simulating terrestrial point clouds in a realistic scene. The proposed LiDAR simulator offers two modes for simulating point clouds: single-ray and multi-ray modes. The findings demonstrate that utilizing a single-ray simulation approach can significantly reduce the simulation time, by over 28 times, without substantially affecting the overall point number or ground pointswhen compared to employing multiple rays for simulations. This new LESS model integrating a LiDAR simulator has great potential in terms of simultaneously simulating LiDAR data and optical images based on the same 3D scene and parameters. As a proof of concept, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) results from multispectral images and the vertical profiles from multispectral LiDAR waveforms were simulated and analyzed. The results showed that the proposed LESS LiDAR simulator can fulfill its design goals.

Abstract Strict lockdowns were implemented in China to fight Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID‐19). We explored the nighttime light (NTL) of China's four cities in five stages of COVID‐19 including case free period, newly appeared period, rising period, outbreak period, and stationary period. Using six categories of points of interest data (“company,” “recreation,” “healthcare,” “residence,” “shopping,” and “traffic facility”) and random forest models, we found that dimming light of four cities is associated with the epidemic development and human activity changes. When confirmed cases appeared, healthcare associated NTL radiance increased rapidly in Wuhan and Guangzhou, but decreased in the fourth and fifth stages. Companies in all cities were resuscitated in the fifth stage, while companies in Guangzhou was resuscitated in the fourth stage. Shopping related NTL radiance in Wuhan increased quickly in the fifth stage which indicated some resuscitation. In addition, compared to gross domestic product, the trend in electric power consumption was consistent with the trend in NTL radiance. The above findings contribute to the making of control policies for COVID‐19 as well as other infectious diseases.

Surface longwave radiation (SLR) derived from remotely sensed data facilitates understanding of the SLR in global climate change. Hyperspectral infrared sounders aboard space platforms provide information on the surface and vertical structure of Earth’s atmosphere. However, currently, SLR products estimated from these observations are unavailable, which hampers their application potential for Earth’s radiation budget in the context of global warming. To address this issue, we developed simple and effective SLR model under clear-sky conditions using at-sensor spectral radiances from Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS). The model was found to be insensitive to AIRS instrument noise, and showed good performances based on a simulation dataset. The AIRS footprint geometrical model was proposed to match the AIRS and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data to estimate the cloud fraction. Validation against ground-based measurements found that the surface upward longwave radiation model has a bias of 3.18 W/m2, root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 30.51 W/m2, and R2 of 0.84; the surface downward longwave radiation model has a bias of 0.77 W/m2, RMSE of 29.09 W/m2, and R2 of 0.78. The large validation biases at two ground sites reflect the limited spatial representativeness for AIRS footprints. Terrain-induced altitude differences and spatial inhomogeneity can redistribute the spatial distributions of SLR. Moreover, the model performances were weakly dependent on seasonal variation. The results indicate that the proposed model provides a foundation for the further development of operational SLR products.

The demand for leaf area index (LAI) retrieval from spaceborne full-waveform LiDAR increases due to its direct sampling of the three-dimensional forest structure at a near-global scale. However, the nonrandomness (i.e., clumping effect) of canopy composition limits the reliability of LAI derived from two common methods. They either assume a homogeneous scene in the footprint or just correct for the large gaps-induced between-crown clumping. The clumping in the crown is still an unaddressed issue. We proposed a method to compensate occlusion (i.e., lower canopy layers are occluded by the upper canopy in the process of LiDAR measurement), through which the vertical canopy profile can be resolved from the waveform. Further, we developed a method of deriving relative path length distribution that can reflect the heterogeneity of the canopy from the occlusion-corrected waveform. In addition to correcting the between-crown clumping, we corrected the within-crown clumping further using the derived relative path length distribution, based on path length distribution (PATH) theory. We used simulated waveform data with known LAI and GLAS data with corresponding field-measured LAI to test the performance of our and the other two common LAI retrieval methods. Results show that the errors of our approach are the lowest (with an error generally below 10% and the maximum error below 20%, compared with up to 69% and 47% for the other two methods), and it is relatively stable in various scenes. This study demonstrated the potential of improving LAI retrieval through full utilization of full-waveform data.

Accurate wall-to-wall estimation of forest crown cover is critical for a wide range of ecological studies. Notwithstanding the increasing use of UAVs in forest canopy mapping, the ultrahigh-resolution UAV imagery requires an appropriate procedure to separate the contribution of understorey from overstorey vegetation, which is complicated by the spectral similarity between the two forest components and the illumination environment. In this study, we investigated the integration of deep learning and the combined data of imagery and photogrammetric point clouds for boreal forest canopy mapping. The procedure enables the automatic creation of training sets of tree crown (overstorey) and background (understorey) data via the combination of UAV images and their associated photogrammetric point clouds and expands the applicability of deep learning models with self-supervision.Based on the UAV images with different overlap levels of 12 conifer forest plots that are categorized into “I”, “II” and “III” complexity levels according to illumination environment, we compared the self-supervised deep learning-predicted canopy maps from original images with manual delineation data and found an average intersection of union (IoU) larger than 0.9 for “complexity I” and “complexity II” plots and larger than 0.75 for “complexity III” plots. The proposed method was then compared with three classical image segmentation methods (i.e., maximum likelihood, Kmeans, and Otsu) in the plot-level crown cover estimation, showing outperformance in overstorey canopy extraction against other methods. The proposed method was also validated against wall-to-wall and pointwise crown cover estimates using UAV LiDAR and in situ digital cover photography (DCP) benchmarking methods. The results showed that the model-predicted crown cover was in line with the UAV LiDAR method (RMSE of 0.06) and deviate from the DCP method (RMSE of 0.18). We subsequently compared the new method and the commonly used UAV structure-from-motion (SfM) method at varying forward and lateral overlaps over all plots and a rugged terrain region, yielding results showing that the method-predicted crown cover was relatively insensitive to varying overlap (largest bias of less than 0.15), whereas the UAV SfM-estimated crown cover was seriously affected by overlap and decreased with decreasing overlap. In addition, canopy mapping over rugged terrain verified the merits of the new method, with no need for a detailed digital terrain model (DTM). The new method is recommended to be used in various image overlaps, illuminations, and terrains due to its robustness and high accuracy. This study offers opportunities to promote forest ecological applications (e.g., leaf area index estimation) and sustainable management (e.g., deforestation).

As a primary nighttime light (NTL) data source, the day/night band (DNB) sensor of the visible infrared imaging radiometer suite (VIIRS) is used in a wide range of studies. However, this signal is influenced by the atmosphere and may cause uncertainty while monitoring ground NTL. Given the lack of the quantitative analysis of the atmospheric effect on NTL, this study analyzes the relationship between VIIRS DNB NTL radiance and aerosol optical depth (AOD) in the urban areas of Beijing and three other Chinese cities of different urbanization levels. Results suggest a significantly negative relationship between the NTL radiance and AOD. The linear and log-linear models generate similar coefficients of determination (R2) for the AOD and NTL data, which vary for different urban centers. In Beijing, where the aerosol robotic network observations are available, R2 reached 0.655 between the monthly NTL radiance and AOD. A slight decrease of R2 occurred while using the Himawari AOD. The relationship between the NTL radiance and AOD varies among the cities. The NTL radiance may decrease by approximately 10 nW.cm-2sr-1 when daily AOD increases one unit. For Beijing, this decrease may be above 15 nW.cm-2sr-1, which is comparable with the threshold used to extract urban areas. These findings underscore the importance of AOD in the application of NTL data that are potentially useful in the reconstruction of stable time series VIIRS DNB images by removing the aerosol effects.

Remote sensing fractional vegetation cover (FVC) requires both finer-resolution and high-frequency in climate and ecosystem research. The increasing availability of finer-resolution (≤ 30 m) remote sensing data makes this possible. However, data from different satellites have large differences in spatial resolution, spectral response function, and so on, making joint use difficult. Herein, we showed that the vegetation index (VI)-based mixture model with the appropriate VI values of pure vegetation (Vv) and bare soil (Vs) from the MODIS BRDF product via the multi-angle VI method (MultiVI) was feasible to estimate FVC with multiple satellite data. Analyses of the spatial resolution and spectral response function differences for MODIS and other satellites including Landsat 8, Chinese GF 1, and ZY 3 predicted that (1) the effect of Vv and Vs downscaling on FVC estimation uncertainty varied from satellite to satellite due to the positioning differences, and (2) after spectral normalization, the uncertainty (RMSDs) for FVC estimation decreased by ~2.6% compared with the results without spectral normalization. FVC estimation across multiple satellite data will help to improve the spatiotemporal resolution of FVC products, which is an important development for numerous biophysical applications. Herein, we proved that the VI-based mixture model with Vv and Vs from MultiVI is a strong candidate.

Both leaf inclination angle distribution (LAD) and leaf area index (LAI) dominate optical remote sensing signals. The G-function, which is a function of LAD and remote sensing geometry, is often set to 0.5 in the LAI retrieval of coniferous canopies even though this assumption is only valid for spherical LAD. Large uncertainties are thus introduced. However, because numerous tiny leaves grow on conifers, it is nearly impossible to quantitatively evaluate such uncertainties in LAI retrieval. In this study, we proposed a method to characterize the possible change of G-function of coniferous canopies as well as its effect on LAI retrieval. Specifically, a Multi-Directional Imager (MDI) was developed to capture stereo images of the branches, and the needles were reconstructed. The accuracy of the inclination angles calculated from the reconstructed needles was high. Moreover, we analyzed whether a spherical distribution is a valid assumption for coniferous canopies by calculating the possible range of the G-function from the measured LADs of branches of Larch and Spruce and the true G-functions of other species from some existing inventory data and three-dimensional (3D) tree models. Results show that the constant G assumption introduces large errors in LAI retrieval, which could be as large as 53% in the zenithal viewing direction used by spaceborne LiDAR. As a result, accurate LAD estimation is recommended. In the absence of such data, our results show that a viewing zenith angle between 45 and 65 degrees is a good choice, at which the errors of LAI retrieval caused by the spherical assumption will be less than 10% for coniferous canopies.

The Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) is usually used to describe the reflectance anisotropy of a non-Lambertian surface and estimate surface parameters. Among the BRDF models, the kernel-driven models have been extensively used due to their simple form and powerful fitting ability, and their reliability has been validated in some studies. However, existing validation efforts used in situ measurements or limited satellite data, which may be subject to inadequate observational conditions or quality uncertainties. A recently released high-quality BRDF database from Polarization and Directionality of the Earth’s Reflectances (POLDER) provides an opportunity to revisit the performance of the kernel-driven models. Therefore, in order to evaluate the fitting ability of the kernel-driven models under different observational conditions and explore their application direction in the future, we use the filtered high-quality BRDF database to evaluate the fitting ability of the kernel-driven model represented by the RossThick-LiSparseR (RTLSR) kernels in this paper. The results show that the RTLSR model performs well, which shows small fitting residuals under most observational conditions. However, the applicability of the RTLSR model performed differently across land cover types; the RTLSR model exhibited larger fitting residuals, especially over non-vegetated surfaces. Under different sun-sensor geometries, the fitting residuals show a strong positive correlation with the Solar Zenith Angle. The above two factors cause the RTLSR model to exhibit a poorer fitting ability at high latitudes. As an exploration, we designed a model combination strategy that combines the advantages of different models and achieved a better performance at high latitudes. We believe that this study provides a better understanding of the RTLSR model.

Analysis Ready Data (ARD) has been greatly recommended by the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) for simplifying and fostering long time series analysis at large scale with minimum additional user effort. Landsat ARD has been successfully made and widely used for large scale analysis. Subsequently, the Chinese satellite data similar to Landsat data have been processed and will be processed into ARDs to promote the use of the Chinese satellite data. At the first stage of the mission, the 4 Wide Field Viewing (WFV) data on GaoFen 1 (GF1) covering the whole of China and the surrounding areas have been processed into ARD. The ARD is provided as standard tiles under a common and unified projection with per pixel quality assurance and metadata for tracing back and further processing data, which are finally stored into a Hierarchical Data File (HDF); furthermore, all spectral bands are georegistered and radiometrically cross-calibrated as top of atmosphere (TOA) reflectance and are atmospherically corrected as surface reflectance (SR). Therefore, the ARD can be further used easily to produce land cover and land cover change maps and retrieve geophysical and biophysical parameters.

Leaf angle distribution (LAD) is an important attribute of forest canopy architecture and affects the solar radiation regime within the canopy. Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) has been increasingly used in LAD estimation. The point clouds data suffer from the occlusion effect, which leads to incomplete scanning and depends on measurement strategies such as the number of scans and scanner location. Evaluating these factors is important to understand how to improve LAD, which is still lacking. Here, we introduce an easy way of estimating the LAD using open source software. Importantly, the influence of the occlusion effect on the LAD was evaluated by combining the proposed complete point clouds (CPCs) with the simulated data of 3D tree models of Aspen, Pin Oak and White Oak. We analyzed the effects of the point density, the number of scans and the scanner height on the LAD and G-function. Results show that: (1) the CPC can be used to evaluate the TLS-based normal vector reconstruction accuracy without an occlusion effect; (2) the accuracy is slightly affected by the normal vector reconstruction method and is greatly affected by the point density and the occlusion effect. The higher the point density (with a number of points per unit leaf area of 0.2 cm−2 to 27 cm−2 tested), the better the result is; (3) the performance is more sensitive to the scanner location than the number of scans. Increasing the scanner height improves LAD estimation, which has not been seriously considered in previous studies. It is worth noting that relatively tall trees suffer from a more severe occlusion effect, which deserves further attention in further study.

Validation over heterogeneous areas is critical to ensuring the quality of remote sensing products. This paper focuses on the sampling methods used to validate the coarse-resolution fractional vegetation cover (FVC) product in the Heihe River Basin, where the patterns of spatial variations in and between land cover types vary significantly in the different growth stages of vegetation. A sampling method, called the mean of surface with non-homogeneity (MSN) method, and three other sampling methods are examined with real-world data obtained in 2012. A series of 15-m-resolution fractional vegetation cover reference maps were generated using the regressions of field-measured and satellite data. The sampling methods were tested using the 15-m-resolution normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and land cover maps over a complete period of vegetation growth. Two scenes were selected to represent the situations in which sampling locations were sparsely and densely distributed. The results show that the FVCs estimated using the MSN method have errors of approximately less than 0.03 in the two selected scenes. The validation accuracy of the sampling methods varies with variations in the stratified non-homogeneity in the different growing stages of the vegetation. The MSN method, which considers both heterogeneity and autocorrelations between strata, is recommended for use in the determination of samplings prior to the design of an experimental campaign. In addition, the slight scaling bias caused by the non-linear relationship between NDVI and FVC samples is discussed. The positive or negative trend of the biases predicted using a Taylor expansion is found to be consistent with that of the real biases.

The development of near-surface remote sensing requires the accurate extraction of leaf area index (LAI) from networked digital cameras under all illumination conditions. The widely used directional gap fraction model is more suitable for overcast conditions due to the difficulty to discriminate the shaded foliage from the shadowed parts of images acquired on sunny days. In this study, a new LAI extraction method by the sunlit foliage component from downward-looking digital photography under clear-sky conditions is proposed. In this method, the sunlit foliage component was extracted by an automated image classification algorithm named LAB2, the clumping index was estimated by a path length distribution-based method, the LAD and G function were quantified by leveled digital images and, eventually, the LAI was obtained by introducing a geometric-optical (GO) model which can quantify the sunlit foliage proportion. The proposed method was evaluated at the YJP site, Canada, by the 3D realistic structural scene constructed based on the field measurements. Results suggest that the LAB2 algorithm makes it possible for the automated image processing and the accurate sunlit foliage extraction with the minimum overall accuracy of 91.4%. The widely-used finite-length method tends to underestimate the clumping index, while the path length distribution-based method can reduce the relative error (RE) from 7.8% to 6.6%. Using the directional gap fraction model under sunny conditions can lead to an underestimation of LAI by (1.61; 55.9%), which was significantly outside the accuracy requirement (0.5; 20%) by the Global Climate Observation System (GCOS). The proposed LAI extraction method has an RMSE of 0.35 and an RE of 11.4% under sunny conditions, which can meet the accuracy requirement of the GCOS. This method relaxes the required diffuse illumination conditions for the digital photography, and can be applied to extract LAI from downward-looking webcam images, which is expected for the regional to continental scale monitoring of vegetation dynamics and validation of satellite remote sensing products.

Vegetation cover estimation for overstory and understory layers provides valuable information for modeling forest carbon and water cycles and refining forest ecosystem function assessment. Although previous studies demonstrated the capability of light detection and ranging (LiDAR) in the three-dimensional (3D) characterization of forest overstory and understory communities, the high cost inhibits its application in frequent and successive survey tasks. Low-cost commercial red−green−blue (RGB) cameras mounted on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), as LiDAR alternatives, provide operational systems for simultaneously quantifying overstory crown cover (OCC) and understory vegetation cover (UVC). We developed an effective method named back-projection of 3D point cloud onto superpixel-segmented image (BAPS) to extract overstory and forest floor pixels using 3D structure-from-motion (SfM) point clouds and two-dimensional (2D) superpixel segmentation. The OCC was estimated from the extracted overstory crown pixels. A reported method, called half-Gaussian fitting (HAGFVC), was used to segement green vegetation and non-vegetation pixels from the extracted forest floor pixels and derive UVC. The UAV-based RGB imagery and field validation data were collected from eight forest plots in Saihanba National Forest Park (SNFP) plantation in northern China. The consistency of the OCC estimates between BAPS and canopy height model (CHM)-based methods (coefficient of determination: 0.7171) demonstrated the capability of the BAPS method in the estimation of OCC. The segmentation of understory vegetation was verified by the supervised classification (SC) method. The validation results showed that the OCC and UVC estimates were in good agreement with reference values, where the root-mean-square error (RMSE) of OCC (unitless) and UVC (unitless) reached 0.0704 and 0.1144, respectively. The low-cost UAV-based observation system and the newly developed method are expected to improve the understanding of ecosystem functioning and facilitate ecological process modeling.

Taking photographs with a commercially available digital camera is an efficient and objective method for determining the green fractional vegetation cover (FVC) for field validation of satellite products. However, classifying leaves under shadows in processing digital images remains challenging and results in classification errors. To address this problem, an automatic shadow-resistant algorithm in the Commission Internationale d’Eclairage L*a*b* color space (SHAR-LABFVC) based on a documented FVC estimation algorithm (LABFVC) is proposed in this paper. The hue saturation intensity (HSI) is introduced in SHAR-LABFVC to enhance the brightness of shaded parts of the image. The lognormal distribution is used to fit the frequency of vegetation greenness and to classify vegetation and the background. Real and synthesized images are used for evaluation, and the results are in good agreement with the visual interpretation, particularly when the FVC is high and the shadows are deep, indicating that SHAR-LABFVC is shadow resistant. Without specific improvements to reduce the shadow effect, the underestimation of FVC can be up to 0.2 in the flourishing period of vegetation at a scale of 10 m. Therefore, the proposed algorithm is expected to improve the validation accuracy of remote sensing products.

Earth’s reflectivity is among the key parameters of climate research. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)’s Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) onboard National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)’s Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) spacecraft provides spectral reflectance of the entire sunlit Earth in the near backscattering direction every 65 to 110 min. Unlike EPIC, sensors onboard the Earth Orbiting Satellites (EOS) sample reflectance over swaths at a specific local solar time (LST) or over a fixed area. Such intrinsic sampling limits result in an apparent Earth’s reflectivity. We generated spectral reflectance over sampling areas using EPIC data. The difference between the EPIC and EOS estimates is an uncertainty in Earth’s reflectivity. We developed an Earth Reflector Type Index (ERTI) to discriminate between major Earth atmosphere components: clouds, cloud-free ocean, bare and vegetated land. Temporal variations in Earth’s reflectivity are mostly determined by clouds. The sampling area of EOS sensors may not be sufficient to represent cloud variability, resulting in biased estimates. Taking EPIC reflectivity as a reference, low-earth-orbiting-measurements at the sensor-specific LST tend to overestimate EPIC values by 0.8% to 8%. Biases in geostationary orbiting approximations due to a limited sampling area are between − 0.7 % and 12%. Analyses of ERTI-based Earth component reflectivity indicate that the disagreement between EPIC and EOS estimates depends on the sampling area, observation time and vary between − 10 % and 23%.

Surface shortwave (SW) irradiation is the primary driving force of energy exchange in the atmosphere and land interface. The global climate is profoundly influenced by irradiation changes due to the special climatic condition in Antarctica. Remote-sensing retrieval can offer only the instantaneous values in an area, whilst daily cycle and average values are necessary for further studies and applications, including climate change, ecology, and land surface process. When considering the large values of and small diurnal changes of solar zenith angle and cloud coverage, we develop two methods for the temporal extension of remotely sensed downward SW irradiance over Antarctica. The first one is an improved sinusoidal method, and the second one is an interpolation method based on cloud fraction change. The instantaneous irradiance data and cloud products are used in both methods to extend the diurnal cycle, and obtain the daily average value. Data from South Pole and Georg von Neumayer stations are used to validate the estimated value. The coefficient of determination (R2) between the estimated daily averages and the measured values based on the first method is 0.93, and the root mean square error (RMSE) is 32.21 W/m2 (8.52%). As for the traditional sinusoidal method, the R2 and RMSE are 0.68 and 70.32 W/m2 (18.59%), respectively The R2 and RMSE of the second method are 0.96 and 25.27 W/m2 (6.98%), respectively. These values are better than those of the traditional linear interpolation (0.79 and 57.40 W/m2 (15.87%)).

The Complicate Observations and Multi-Parameter Land Information Constructions on Allied Telemetry Experiment (COMPLICATE) comprises a network of remote sensing experiments designed to enhance the dynamic analysis and modeling of remotely sensed information for complex land surfaces. Two types of experimental campaigns were established under the framework of COMPLICATE. The first was designed for continuous and elaborate experiments. The experimental strategy helps enhance our understanding of the radiative and scattering mechanisms of soil and vegetation and modeling of remotely sensed information for complex land surfaces. To validate the methodologies and models for dynamic analyses of remote sensing for complex land surfaces, the second campaign consisted of simultaneous satellite-borne, airborne, and ground-based experiments. During field campaigns, several continuous and intensive observations were obtained. Measurements were undertaken to answer key scientific issues, as follows: 1) Determine the characteristics of spatial heterogeneity and the radiative and scattering mechanisms of remote sensing on complex land surfaces. 2) Determine the mechanisms of spatial and temporal scale extensions for remote sensing on complex land surfaces. 3) Determine synergist inversion mechanisms for soil and vegetation parameters using multi-mode remote sensing on complex land surfaces. Here, we introduce the background, the objectives, the experimental designs, the observations and measurements, and the overall advances of COMPLICATE. As a result of the implementation of COMLICATE and for the next several years, we expect to contribute to quantitative remote sensing science and Earth observation techniques.

Mountainous areas with rugged terrains are widely distributed around the world. Remotely sensed values of the fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FAPAR) suffer from the effect of rugged terrain. In this study, the effect of rugged terrain was incorporated into the FAPAR model based on recollision probability (FAPAR-P), which was improved in two aspects: calculating the sky viewing factor to correct for the fraction of diffuse sky radiation to the total radiation, and correcting the interception probability according to the slope and aspect of each pixel. The newly developed model is called FAPAR-PR (FAPAR-P Model for Rugged Terrain Area). Two study areas were chosen to validate the proposed model: the Dayekou watershed in Gansu Province, and Weichang in Hebei Province, China. The FAPAR values derived from the models were compared with FAPAR values measured in situ using photon flux sensors and the SunScan canopy analysis system (Delta-T Devices Ltd., Cambridge, UK). The validation results show that the FAPAR-PR model is applicable to rugged terrain areas, and it achieves a high level of accuracy. The FAPAR retrieval at different scales was also conducted to estimate the effect of terrain on the FAPAR-P and FAPAR-PR models. In our chosen study area, the effect of rugged terrain was significant in fine resolution pixels, but it was not obvious at larger scales, as the effects of slope and aspect were partly eliminated by the upscaling of the digital elevation model.
