With high integration density and excellent optical properties, silicon photonics is becoming a promising platform for complete integration and large-scale optical quantum information processing. Scalable quantum information applications need photon generation and detection to be integrated on the same chip, and we have seen that various devices on the silicon photonic chip have been developed for this goal. This paper reviews the relevant research results and state-of-the-art technologies on the silicon photonic chip for scalable quantum applications. Despite the shortcomings, the properties of some components have already met the requirements for further expansion. Furthermore, we point out the challenges ahead and future research directions for on-chip scalable quantum information applications.

Optical spin–orbit interaction (SOI), which can be used to simultaneously control the spin and orbital angular momentum of light, is important for both classical and quantum information applications. In linear and nonlinear optics, the SOI of light has been extensively explored in both artificial structures and conventional optical crystals. However, optical SOI in quantum nonlinear optical processes, such as spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC), has not been studied before. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that optical SOI in the SPDC process can be realized through a nonlinear crystal with threefold rotational symmetry. Two-photon quantum states with controlled angular momentum can be generated through the symmetry selection rules in nonlinear optics and the SOI of the pump wave. The proposed methodology may facilitate the generation and control of spin and orbital angular momentum of entangled photons.

We report a dynamic modulation of the photonic quantum states in an all-optical manner using the nonlinear metasurface. The entanglement state was efficiently controlled and a quantum state distillation has been demonstrated.

An on-chip multi-grating device is proposed to interface single-atoms and integrated photonic circuits, by guiding and focusing lasers to the area with ~10um above the chip for trapping, state manipulation, and readout of single Rubidium atoms. For the optical dipole trap, two 850 nm laser beams are diffracted and overlapped to form a lattice of single-atom dipole trap, with the diameter of optical dipole trap around 2.7um. Similar gratings are designed for guiding 780 nm probe laser to excite and also collect the fluorescence of 87Rb atoms. Until now, the most likely direct maternal progenitor (AABB) for common wheat (AABBDD) has yet to be identified. Here, we try to solve this particular problem with the specificity of a novel gene family in wheat and by using large population of rare germplasm resources.Dissect the novelty of TaCAF1Ia subfamily in wheat. Exploit the conservative and specific characteristics of TaCAF1Ia1 to reveal the origin of the maternal progenitor for common wheat.Phylogenetic and collinear analysis of TaCAF1 genes were performed to identify the evolutionary specificity of TaCAF1Ia subfamily. The large-scale expression patterns and interaction patterns analysis of CCR4-NOT complex were used to clarify the expressed and structural specificity of TaCAF1Ia subfamily in wheat. The population resequencing and phylogeny analysis of the TaCAF1Ia1 were utilized for the traceability analysis to understand gene-pool exchanges during the transferring and subsequent development from tetraploid to hexaploidy wheat.TaCAF1Ia is a novel non-typical CAF1 subfamily without DEDD (Asp-Glu-Asp-Asp) domain, whose members were extensively duplicated in wheat genome. The replication events had started and constantly evolved from ancestor species. Specifically, it was found that a key member CAF1Ia1 was highly specialized and only existed in the subB genome and S genome. Unlike CAF1s reported in other plants, TaCAF1Ia genes may be new factors for anther development. These atypical TaCAF1s could also form CCR4-NOT complex in wheat but with new interaction sites. Utilizing the particular but conserved characteristics of the TaCAF1Ia1 gene, the comparative analysis of haplotypes composition for TaCAF1Ia1 were identified among wheat populations with different ploidy levels. Based on this, the dual-lineages origin model of maternal progenitor for common wheat and potential three-lineages domestication model for cultivated tetraploid wheat were proposed.This study brings fresh insights for revealing the origin of wheat and the function of CAF1 in plants.

Metasurfaces have proven themselves an exotic ability to harness light at nano-scale, being important not only for classical but also for quantum optics. Dynamic manipulation of the quantum states is at the heart of quantum information processing; however, such function has been rarely realized with metasurfaces so far. Here, we report an all-optical dynamic modulation of the photonic quantum states using the nonlinear metasurface. The metasurface consists of a metallic nanostructure combined with a photoisomerizable azo layer. By tuning the plasmonic resonance through optically switching the azo molecules between their binary isomeric states, we have realized dynamic control of transmission efficiencies of orthogonally polarized photons and also the phase delay between them, thereby an entangled state was efficiently controlled. As an illustration, a quantum state distillation has been demonstrated to recover a Bell state from a non-maximally entangled one to that with fidelities higher than 98%. Our work would enrich the functions of the metasurface in the quantum world, from static to dynamic modulation, making the quantum metasurface going practical.

The photochemical reflectance index (PRI) has emerged to be a pre-visual indicator of water stress. However, whether the varying shaded-leaf fractions, which may be caused by multiple view angles or the changing crop density in the field, affect the performance of PRI in detecting water stress of crops is still uncertain. This study evaluated the impact of the varying shaded-leaf fractions on estimating relative water content (RWC) across growth stages of winter wheat using seven formulations of PRI. Results demonstrated that for the control treatment the mean PRI of sunlit leaves was slightly higher than those of shaded leaves, but the difference between PRI of sunlit and shaded leaves increased as water resources became more limiting. Despite the difference between PRI of sunlit and shaded leaves, the significance of the linear relationship between RWC and most studied formulations of PRI did not show obvious variations with shadow fractions, except for the 100 % shaded-leaf condition. Among the studied formulations of PRI, PRI3 based on reflectance at 512 nm as the reference band provided the most accurate estimates of RWC with varying shaded-leaf fractions, except for the 100 % shaded-leaf condition. The slope and the intercept of linear regression models with PRI3 also showed minimized variations with shaded-leaf fractions. We then applied a uniform RWC prediction model to the data of varying shaded-leaf fractions and found that the accuracy of RWC predictions was not significantly affected in the mixture of sunlit and shaded leaves. However, RWC estimated with PRI of the 100 % shaded-leaf condition had the highest root mean square error (RMSE), implying that PRI of the pure shaded leaves may yield inaccurate estimates of plant water status.

A theoretical model for calculating the spectral emissivity of the thermal control coating with rough surfaces is proposed based on the Monte Carlo method in this paper. Instead of treating the surface of the coating as a smooth surface, a diffuse surface or a rough surface using an empirical formula, the model applies a Gaussian random rough surface to the spectral emissivity calculation of the coating. Firstly, the Gaussian rough surface is established, and its properties are mainly determined by two parameters: the root-mean-square roughness(δ) and the coherent length(l). Then the spectral emissivity model of the thermal control coating with the rough surface is established by Monte Carlo method. The directional spectral emissivity of the smooth surface and the rough surface with different roughness is compared. Finally, the reasons for their differences in spectral emissivity are explained.

Background Barley is one of the earliest domesticated crops and regarded as one of the founder of Neolithic transition in the Near East Fertile Crescent. Domestication process of cultivated barley (especially east-Asian cultivated barley) has been under debate because of the controversial origin centers of barley, which caused by widely dispersal of wild barley. What’s more, no comprehensive study regarding alteration in metabolism during domestication has been delineated in barley so far. Results Transcriptomic and non-targeted metabolic analyses were performed for two wild barley populations (wild barley of Near East Fertile Crescent (Wb-NE), and wild barley of Tibetan Plateau (Wb-T)), and one cultivated barley population (cultivated barley of China (Cb-C)), the results revealed two stages of the domestication process of Cb-C, first from Wb-NE to Wb-T, and then from Wb-T to Cb-C. The Wb-T played an important intermediate role in the domestication from Wb-NE to Cb-C, and had made more genetic contribution than Wb-NE to Cb-C. Meanwhile, we found continuous gene flow, a large number of selective genes and metabolites during domestication. Divergent metabolites of alkaloids and phenylpropanoids were specific targeted in stages from Wb-NE to Wb-T and from Wb-T to Cb-C, respectively. The key missense SNPs in genes HORVU6Hr1G027650 and HORVU4Hr1G072150 might be related to the divergence of metabolites of alkaloids and phenylpropanoids during domestication. Conclusions Our results revealed that two stages of the domestication process of Cb-C, and distinct sets of metabolites were targeted by selection during the evolution from wild barley of the Near East Fertile Crescent to Tibetan wild barley to cultivated barley of China. Our findings not only provided genetic and metabolic insights into domestication process of barley but also highlighted the power of combining omics data for trait dissection.

A new plasmonic nanofocusing metalens based on aperiodic silica grating arrays was designed and investigated. Assisted by the graphene surface plasmon, the infrared polarized light can be focused in a nanospot with a dynamically controlled focal length by varying the dielectric strip width or the graphene Fermi level E f . For instance, with λ0 = 8 µm and E f at 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 eV, focal lengths of 4.5, 3.8 and 3.5 µm with its corresponding FWHM of 64, 232 and 320 nm, respectively, can be realized. The variation of the focusing efficiency with respect to the incident wavelength and the Fermi level were also investigated. The results of theoretical analysis based on light differential equations agree well with the finite element analysis simulation, which further validate the model.

We demonstrate enhancing the excitation and transmission efficiency of the propagated surface plasmon (SP) of an Ag nanowire (Ag NW) in hybrid Ag–MoS2 structures by contrasting the SP propagation of the Ag NW on different substrates, including SiO2 and monolayer MoS2, or partially overlapping the Ag NW on MoS2 flakes. The simulation results show that the leaky radiation of the hybrid plasmonic modes H1 and H2 can be prominently suppressed due to the high refractive index dielectric layer of MoS2, which provides an optical barrier for blocking the leaky radiation, resulting in reduced propagation loss. This paper provides a feasible and effective method to improve the SP propagation length.

Low molecular weight glutenin subunits (LMW-GS) play an important role in determining the bread-making characteristics of dough in the end-use quality of wheat. In this study, A total of 149 worldwide-originated durum wheat were used to analyze the composition of LMW-GS using MALDI-TOF-MS. Based on the allelic variation of glutenin subunits, the genetic diversity was evaluated for the 149 durum wheat. Five types of alleles were identified at the Glu-A3 locus with Glu-A3e, Glu-A3a/c, Glu-A3f, Glu-A3d and Glu-A3b accounting for 43.0%, 16.1%, 12.8%, 10.1% and 7.4 % of the accessions, respectively. Five types of alleles were identified at the Glu-B3 locus: Glu-B3d (60.4%), Glu-B3b (6.0%), Glu-B3c (6.0%), Glu-B3h (2.7%) and Glu-B3f (0.7%). Two novel alleles encoding abnormal subunits 40500 Da and 41260 Da were identified at the Glu-A3 and Glu-B3 loci, respectively. Further studies are needed to match these novel alleles to previously discovered novel alleles. Moreover, the genetic diversity analysis indicated that great genetic variation existed in durum wheat among encoding loci of glutenin subunits, released periods of varieties and different geographical origins. The results provide more important information of potential germplasm for the improvement of durum wheat and common wheat.

Summary Plants produce numerous metabolites that are important for their development and growth. However, the genetic architecture of the wheat metabolome has not been well studied. Here, utilizing a high‐density genetic map, we conducted a comprehensive metabolome study via widely targeted LC‐MS/MS to analyze the wheat kernel metabolism. We further combined agronomic traits and dissected the genetic relationship between metabolites and agronomic traits. In total, 1260 metabolic features were detected. Using linkage analysis, 1005 metabolic quantitative trait loci (mQTLs) were found distributed unevenly across the genome. Twenty‐four candidate genes were found to modulate the levels of different metabolites, of which two were functionally annotated by in vitro analysis to be involved in the synthesis and modification of flavonoids. Combining the correlation analysis of metabolite‐agronomic traits with the co‐localization of methylation quantitative trait locus (mQTL) and phenotypic QTL (pQTL), genetic relationships between the metabolites and agronomic traits were uncovered. For example, a candidate was identified using correlation and co‐localization analysis that may manage auxin accumulation, thereby affecting number of grains per spike (NGPS). Furthermore, metabolomics data were used to predict the performance of wheat agronomic traits, with metabolites being found that provide strong predictive power for NGPS and plant height. This study used metabolomics and association analysis to better understand the genetic basis of the wheat metabolism which will ultimately assist in wheat breeding., Significance Statement This work performed a comprehensive metabolome analysis of kernels from wheat RILs, which, in conjunction with wheat genome data, provided a valuable resource for mQTL analysis, identification of unknown enzymes, and metabolite‐agronomic trait correlations.

Grain filling is an important growth process in formation of yield and quality for barley final yield determination. To explore the grain development behavior during grain filling period in barley, a high-density genetic map with 1962 markers deriving from a doubled haploid (DH) population of 122 lines was used to identify dynamic quantitative trait locus (QTL) for grain filling rate (GFR) and five grain size traits: grain area (GA), grain perimeter (GP), grain length (GL), grain width (GW) and grain diameter (GD). Unconditional QTL mapping is to detect the cumulative effect of genetic factors on a phenotype from development to a certain stage. Conditional QTL mapping is to detect a net effect of genetic factors on the phenotype at adjacent time intervals. Using unconditional, conditional and covariate QTL mapping methods, we successfully detected 34 major consensus QTLs. Moreover, certain candidate genes related to grain size, plant height, yield, and starch synthesis were identified in six QTL clusters, and individual gene was specifically expressed in different grain filling stages. These findings provide useful information for understanding the genetic basis of the grain filling dynamic process and will be useful for molecular marker-assisted selection in barley breeding.

Grain size and weight are crucial components of barley yield and quality and are the target characteristics of domestication and modern breeding. Despite this, little is known about the genetic and molecular mechanisms of grain size and weight in barley. Here, we evaluated nine traits determining grain size and weight, including thousand grain weight (Tgw), grain length (Gl), grain width (Gw), grain length-width ratio (Lwr), grain area (Ga), grain perimeter (Gp), grain diameter (Gd), grain roundness (Gr), and factor form density (Ffd), in a double haploid (DH) population for three consecutive years. Using five mapping methods, we successfully identified 60 reliable QTLs and 27 hotspot regions that distributed on all chromosomes except 6H which controls the nine traits of grain size and weight. Moreover, we also identified 164 barley orthologs of 112 grain size/weight genes from rice, maize, wheat and 38 barley genes that affect grain yield. A total of 45 barley genes or orthologs were identified as potential candidate genes for barley grain size and weight, including 12, 20, 9, and 4 genes or orthologs for barley, rice, maize, and wheat, respectively. Importantly, 20 of them were located in the 14 QTL hotspot regions on chromosome 1H, 2H, 3H, 5H, and 7H, which controls barley grain size and weight. These results indicated that grain size/weight genes of other cereal species might have the same or similar functions in barley. Our findings provide new insights into the understanding of the genetic basis of grain size and weight in barley, and new information to facilitate high-yield breeding in barley. The function of these potential candidate genes identified in this study are worth exploring and studying in detail.

Leaf is the main organ of photosynthesis, which significantly impacts crop yield. A high-density linkage map containing 1894 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and 68 simple sequence repeats (SSR) markers was used to identify quantitative trait locus (QTL) for flag leaf length (FLL), second leaf length (SLL), third leaf length (TLL), fourth leaf length (FOLL), flag leaf area (FLA), second leaf area (SLA), third leaf area (TLA) and fourth leaf area (FOLA). In total, 57 QTLs underlying the top four leaf length and area traits were identified and mapped on chromosome 2H, 3H, 4H and 7H. Individual QTL accounted for 5.17% to 37.11% of the phenotypic variation in 2015 and 2016. A major stable QTL qFLL2-2 close to the marker 2HL_25536047 was identified on the long arm of chromosome 2H. The most important QTL clustered region at M_256210_824 - 2HL_23335246 on chromosome 2H was associated with FLL, SLL, FLA and SLA and explained high phenotypic variation. These findings provide genetic basis for improving the leaf morphology of barley. In addition, our results suggested that the top four leaves were significantly positively correlated with plant height and some yield-related traits.

In the present study, 150 accessions of worldwide originated durum wheat germplasm (Triticum turgidum spp. durum) were observed for major seedling traits and their growth. The accessions were evaluated for major seedling traits under controlled conditions of hydroponics at the 13th, 20th, 27th and 34th day-after germination. Biomass traits were measured at the 34th day-after germination. Correlation analysis was conducted among the seedling traits and three field traits at maturity, plant height, grain weight and 1000-grain weight observed in four consecutive years. Associations of the measured seedling traits and SNP markers were analyzed based on the mixed linear model (MLM). The results indicated that highly significant genetic variation and robust heritability were found for the seedling and field mature traits. In total, 259 significant associations were detected for all the traits and four growth stages. The phenotypic variation explained (R2) by a single SNP marker is higher than 10% for most (84%) of the significant SNP markers. Forty-six SNP markers associated with multiple traits, indicating non-neglectable pleiotropy in seedling stage. The associated SNP markers could be helpful for genetic analysis of seedling traits, and marker-assisted breeding of new wheat varieties with strong seedling vigor.

Sympatric speciation is still contentious but here based on genome-wide analysis; we show incipient sympatric speciation of an emerging new wild barley species from Hordeum spontaneum, the progenitor of all cultivated barleys at “Evolution Plateau” (EP), Upper Galilee, Israel., Sympatric speciation (SS) has been contentious since the idea was suggested by Darwin. Here, we show in wild barley SS due to geologic and edaphic divergence in “Evolution Plateau,” Upper Galilee, Israel. Our whole genome resequencing data showed SS separating between the progenitor old Senonian chalk and abutting derivative young Pleistocene basalt wild barley populations. The basalt wild barley species unfolds larger effective population size, lower recombination rates, and larger genetic diversity. Both species populations show similar descending trend ∼200,000 yr ago associated with the last glacial maximum. Coalescent demography analysis indicates that SS was local, primary, in situ, and not due to a secondary contact from ex situ allopatric population. Adaptive divergent putatively selected genes were identified in both populations. Remarkably, disease resistant genes were selected in the wet basalt population, and genes related to flowering time, leading to temporal reproductive isolation, were selected in the chalk population. The evidence substantiates adaptive ecological SS in wild barley, highlighting the genome landscape during SS with gene flow, due to geologic-edaphic divergence.

Yield losses caused by lodging in barley can be partially controlled by reducing plant height. In order to understand dwarfing mechanisms and efficiently use new dwarf germplasms for a breeding program, it is important to identify QTL of plant height components. QTL analysis was performed for seven plant height component traits using a DH population of 122 lines derived from the cross of Huaai 11 x Huadamai 6. Composite interval mapping procedures detected 20 QTL, which were mapped onto chromosomes 2H, 3H, 5H, 6H, and 7H. Eleven QTL were detected in 3 years and four QTL were detected in 2 years. QTL controlling all seven plant height component traits were found near the dwarfing gene btwd1 on chromosome 7H. These QTL accounted for 27.19 to 59.73% of phenotypic variation in seven plant height component traits. Positive transgressive segregation was found for all traits. Some of the QTL identified in this study will be useful for understanding the dwarfing mechanism and for developing new dwarf varieties using marker-assisted selection.

According to most existing identity-based ring signcryption schemes are based on random oracle model and have too many pairings, a new efficient identity-based ring signcryption scheme is proposed. It can satisfy the unconditional anonymity of the sender by using symmetric encryption algorithm and reduce the pairings by skillfully setting public parameters. Its indistinguishability under adaptive chosen ciphertext attack is proofed by the intractability of the DBDH problem and the unforgeability under adaptive chosen message attack is proved by the intractability of the CDH problem.

The origin and domestication of cultivated barley have long been under debate. A population-based resequencing and phylogenetic analysis of the single copy of RPB2 gene was used to address barley domestication, to explore genetic differentiation of barley populations on the worldwide scale, and to understand gene-pool exchanges during the spread and subsequent development of barley cultivation. Our results revealed significant genetic differentiation among three geographically distinct wild barley populations. Differences in haplotype composition among populations from different geographical regions revealed that modern cultivated barley originated from two major wild barley populations: one from the Near East Fertile Crescent and the other from the Tibetan Plateau, supporting polyphyletic origin of cultivated barley. The results of haplotype frequencies supported multiple domestications coupled with widespread introgression events that generated genetic admixture between divergent barley gene pools. Our results not only provide important insight into the domestication and evolution of cultivated barley, but also enhance our understanding of introgression and distinct selection pressures in different environments on shaping the genetic diversity of worldwide barley populations, thus further facilitating the effective use of the wild barley germplasm.
