Product modelling is a pivotal activity in product development (PD) processes. Well-defined product models organize product data, production information and knowledge to satisfy the requirements of the rapid changes of the PD environment. In this paper, a comprehensive review is carried out on the recent development of product modelling technology. Four types of product modelling methodologies are discussed in detail. Two object-oriented product modelling methods: STEP-based product modelling and UML-based product modelling are reviewed and compared. The research gaps and issues are identified. To implement the product modelling into current integrated manufacturing environment, a generic product modelling framework is proposed. In response to the current rapidly changing manufacturing environment, product modelling technology has been widely applied to provide the essential information for product development (PD) processes. The traditional product modelling technologies are unable to support the information exchange and share in various stages of PD processes that could be taken place among departments in a company or even among companies in distributed manufacturing environment. This has caused many problems such as information loss, data format incompatibility and reduced efficiency and effectiveness of product data applications. This has consequently created bottlenecks for the integration of PD processes. In this paper, a generic product modelling framework (GPMF) is proposed to overcome the abovementioned problems in today's manufacturing environment. This framework uses the standard for the exchange product model data (STEP) as a foundation. It consists of four functional components: an EXPRESS data model namely EDM; a STEP-based modelling environment; a "five-phase" modelling method; and three EDM data exchange and sharing methods. Case studies show that the product models built based on the GPMF are capable of integrating information in product design, manufacturing and assembly. Compound punch-cutting machines are referred as machines that perform both punching and laser-cutting operations. Such machines can greatly increase the efficiency and flexibility of sheet metal manufacturing. Though there are computer-aided design (CAD) systems developed to take care of product design, and computer-aided process planning (CAPP) systems to generate optimal tool paths and plans and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) systems for various manufacturing requirements, according to our literature search, there is no platform or system dedicated to compound sheet metal machining, which lead to problems such as low efficiency and high cost due to lack of optimal scheduling methods for the compound machining methods. This research attempts to develop a prototype STEP-compliant process planning system for supporting the compound punch-cutting machines. The system has interfaces to input CAD product data and output machine control codes. It integrates software modules for nesting optimization, cutting/punch path optimization and planning, simulation, and machining parameters set up. The focus of the paper is placed on investigating the problems and solutions of compound machining, the structure of the STEP-compliant system, and the definition of STEP-compliant product data models and interfaces for creating a STEP-compliant programming environment, where the above mentioned software modules are integrated. A machine that performs both punching and laser-cutting operations is referred as combined punch-and-laser machine. Such a machine has been in the market for about two decades. Although process-planning tools have been used on such a combined machine, the optimization of process planning dedicated to combined machines, based on our literature search results, has never been directly studied. This work addresses the process-planning problem for the combined punch-and-laser machine by integrating knowledge, quantitative analysis, and numerical optimization approaches. The proposed methodology helps making decisions on following issues: (i) which type of operation should be applied to each feature, and (ii) what is the optimal operation sequence (tool path) to achieve the maximum manufacturing efficiency. The ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithms are employed in searching the optimal tool path. Sensitivities of control parameters of ACO are also analysed. Through applications, the proposed method can significantly improve the operation efficiency for the combined punch-and-laser machine. The method can also be easily automated and integrated with the nesting and G-code generation processes. Some issues and possible future research topics have also been discussed. In recent years, a variety of Internet-based systems has been developed for the purpose of Rapid One-of-a-Kind or customized Product Development (ROKPD). They can be applied in different stages of the product development process such as to rapidly capture customer requirements, and help produce highquality products at low cost and short lead-time. Many of the systems, however, do not support rapid adaptation or dynamic reconfiguration of systems and tools for supporting ROKPD in a distributed manufacturing environment. To the authors' knowledge, the infrastructure of such a reconfigurable platform for supporting distributed manufacturing has never been directly studied. This paper proposes an Internet-based reconfigurable ROKP platform that has been prototyped to serve as a substrate for integrating innovative tools and systems for One-of-a-Kind Production (OKP) companies in New Zealand. The main emphasis of this paper is to investigate how to build the Internet-based reconfigurable ROKPD platform and to design appropriate intelligent tools andsystems for the purpose of rapidly and economically producing OKP products in the global environment. A number of recent developments are discussed, including the four open-domain infrastructure of the ROKPD platform, Internet-based data management systems, an integrated product data environment and a cost/lead time control tool. The historical background of Internet-based product design and manufacturing systems for rapid development of one-of-a-kind (OKP) products is systematically reviewed. By reviewing the existing OKP systems and recent approaches of Internet-based design and manufacturing systems, the requirements for the next generation of OKP systems and the current techniques that can be used to implement Internet-based product design and manufacturing systems for the rapid production of OKP products will be discussed. The problems that emerged from recent developments are reviewed and sorted. The future trends of Internet-based collaborative design, decision support, manufacturing support, supply chain management, workflow management, Internet techniques for product design and manufacturing, product modelling, STEP-based data environment, concurrent engineering, etc., will also be discussed. The reviewed state-of-the-art approaches are used directly or indirectly as references for the development of a new generation OKP systems. This paper presents a WWW (World Wide Web) based integrated product development platform for intelligent concurrent design and manufacturing of sheet metal parts. In order to achieve this platform, several major modules are discussed. These modules mainly include the structure of the WWW-based integrated product development platform, an information integration framework, a RTCAPP (real time computer aided process planning) module, a customer interface module, and a design/manufacturing knowledge-based module for supporting product design and manufacturing. This paper gives the structure of the information integration framework for concurrent design and manufacturing of sheet metal parts. An information integration framework, called 'step structure information framework' is proposed. The principles, called 'zero thickness and zero bend radius' are put forward, which can be used to abstract the geometric entities of sheet metal parts in order to facilitate product design and modelling. In sheet metal processing and manufacturing, there are a lot of small- and medium-sized job shops. These small- and medium-sized manufacturing companies have been facing keen competitive pressure in the market. This pressure has forced these companies to make every effort to shorten product development lead-time, improve production efficiency, approach high-quality standards, but at the same time cut down the costs. To meet the needs of these companies, this paper presents a compound cutting and punching production method supported by an integrated CAD/CAPP/CAM system in sheet metal manufacturing. Many existing commercial CAD/CAM systems are not suitable for this manufacturing method, especially under concurrent and global design and manufacturing environments. Some problems have to be solved before these CAD/CAM systems can be employed and integrated for this compound manufacturing method. This paper deals mainly with the solutions to solve some of these problems. The solutions include an integrated data integration platform based on Pro/INTRALINK and STEP, and a knowledge-based real time CAPP (RTCAPP) system for compound sheet metal cutting and punching. Within the presented CAD/CAPP/CAM system, some key modules have been developed. They are the automatic tool selection and manufacturing sequencing module, a shortest tool path optimization module, a cost estimation module and an automatic insertion of auxiliary path module based on knowledge bases.
