Abstract

Objective: A series of physiological changes in thyroid function occur during pregnancy and differ from those non-pregnant women. This study aimed to establish the pregnancy-specific reference intervals of TSH and FT4 using an indirect method based on the healthy pregnant women from southwest China population. Methods: Thyroid function test results which available on the Laboratory Information System (LIS) were collected from the pregnancies who visited the Obstetric Clinic or the Department of Gynecology between 1 January 2015, and 30 December 2020. We grouped the data by trimesters to establish the reference intervals (RIs) based on the clinical consensus of different levels of TSH and FT4 at different weeks of gestation. All arrangements were referenced to the document CLSI EP28-A3C. Results: A total of 33,040 thyroid function test results of pregnant women, aged 31 (28,33) years were statistical analyzed. Estimated RIs for TSH and FT4 in the first, second and third trimesters corresponding to the 2.5th and 97.5th percentiles in TPOAb negative were 0.02–5.23, 0.03–5.24, 0.37–5.68 mIU/L, 11.66–20.69, 10.1–18.59, 9.85–16.86pmol/L, respectively. Conclusion: This study provides trimester-specific RIs for TSH and FT4 among healthy pregnant women in southwest China which guides clinicians to diagnosis and screen for thyroid disorders in this region. Abstract

Stroke, the third leading cause of mortality, is usually associated with severe disabilities, high recurrence rate and other poor outcomes. Currently, there are no long-term effective treatments for stroke. Cell and cytokine therapies have been explored previously. However, the therapeutic outcomes are often limited by poor survival of transplanted cells, uncontrolled cell differentiation, ineffective engraftment with host tissues and non-sustained delivery of growth factors. A tissue-engineering approach provides an alternative for treating ischemic stroke. The key design considerations for the tissue engineering approach include: choice of scaffold materials, choice of cells and cytokines and delivery methods. Here, we review current cell and biomaterial based therapies available for ischemic stroke, with a special focus on tissue-engineering strategies for regeneration of stroke-affected neuronal tissue.

Abstract

Background: A solid pseudopapillary tumor (SPT) of the pancreas is a rare neoplasm with low malignancy, constituting about 2% of pancreatic tumors, which mainly occurs in young women. Case Presentation: We herein report a case of a small SPT arising from the head of the pancreas in an asymptomatic 50-year-old man. This patient was admitted to our department at Henan Provincial People's Hospital for the evaluation of a pancreatic mass and a pancreatic resection was performed. Histology revealed the lesion to be an SPT of the pancreas, with the characteristic pseudopapilla formation, central degeneration, and capsule formation. The tumor was positive for vimentin, CD10, α1-antichymotrypsin, α1-antitrypsin, β-catenin, neuron-specific enolase, synaptophysin, and progesterone receptor. Conclusion: We diagnosed an SPT in the patient based on these histological findings and immunophenotype.

Abstract

Whole blood is one of the most easily accessible biofluids, and circulating leukocytes would include informative transcripts as a first line of immune defense for many disease processes. To demonstrate that transcriptomic responses of circulating blood cells reflect the exposure to environmental toxicants and the characteristic molecular signatures can discriminate and predict the type of toxicant at an early exposure time, we identified and validated characteristic gene expression profiles of rat whole blood after exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). At an early exposure time point, conventional toxicological analysis including changes in the body and organ weight, histopathological examination, and blood biochemical analysis did not reflect any toxicant stresses. However, unsupervised gene expression analysis of blood cells resulted in a characteristic molecular signature for each toxicant. Further analysis of multiclassification suggested 220 genes as early detective and surrogate markers for predicting each PAH with 100% accuracy. These findings suggest that the blood expression signature could be used as a predictable and discernible surrogate marker for detection and prediction of PAHs, and the use of these molecular markers may be more widely implemented in combination with more traditional techniques for assessment and prediction of toxicity exposure to PAHs from an environmental aspect.
