4. Influence of different material parameters on nonlinear vibration of the cylindrical skeleton supported prestressed fabric composite membrane

Abstract

In order to study the influence of geometric nonlinearity and material parameters on the free vibration behavior of the cylindrical skeleton supported prestressed fabric composite membrane. In this paper, based on von Karman's large deflection theory and D’Alembert's principle, the governing equations of nonlinear viscous damped prestressed free vibration of frame supported anisotropic membrane structures were established. By using Galerkin and KBM perturbation method, the analytical expressions of frequency function, displacement function and mode shape of nonlinear free vibration were obtained. In order to verify the effectiveness and effective range of the method, the fourth order Runge-Kutta method was used for numerical calculation. The calculation examples of membrane material parameters were given. The calculation and analysis of different membrane prestress, different length width ratio, different rise span ratio and different material parameters (elastic modulus ratio, viscous damping and material density) were carried out. The results were compared with the numerical results obtained by Runge-Kutta method to verify the accuracy of the method. The research results of this paper provide a theoretical reference for the selection of membrane materials, the subsequent calculation of wind-induced stability of steel skeleton membrane structure and the design of wind-driven rain resistance.

Abstract

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) represent one of the most promising emerging photovoltaic technologies due to their high power conversion efficiency. However, despite the huge progress made not only in terms of the efficiency achieved, but also fundamental understanding of the relevant physics of the devices and issues which affect their efficiency and stability, there are still unresolved problems and obstacles on the path toward commercialization of this promising technology. In this roadmap, we aim to provide a concise and up to date summary of outstanding issues and challenges, and the progress made toward addressing these issues. While the format of this article is not meant to be a comprehensive review of the topic, it provides a collection of the viewpoints of the experts in the field, which covers a broad range of topics related to PSC commercialization, including those relevant for manufacturing (scaling up, different types of devices), operation and stability (various factors), and environmental issues (in particular the use of lead). We hope that the article will provide a useful resource for researchers in the field and that it will facilitate discussions and move forward toward addressing the outstanding challenges in this fast-developing field.

22. Recent Progress of Critical Interface Engineering for Highly Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract

Organic-inorganic lead halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have demonstrated enormous potential as a new generation of solar-based renewable energy. Although their power conversion efficiency (PCE) has been boosted to a spectacular record value, the long-term stability of efficient PSCs is still the dominating concern that hinders their commercialization. Notably, interface engineering has been identified as a valid strategy with extraordinary achievements for enhancing both efficiency and stability of PSCs. Herein, the latest research advances of interface engineering for various interfaces are summarized, and the basic theory and multifaceted roles of interface engineering for optimizing device properties are analyzed. As a highlight, the authors provide their insights on the deposition strategy of interlayers, application of first-principle calculation, and challenges and solutions of interface engineering for PSCs with high efficiency and stability toward future commercialization.

23. Progress and Perspective on Inorganic CsPbI2Br Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract

Over the past few years, all-inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs), especially CsPbI2Br PSCs, have received much attention because of their excellent thermal stability and a suitable trade-off between light absorption and higher phase stability among the family of inorganic perovskites. In this progress report, the realization of highly efficient and stable CsPbI2Br PSCs is summarized through preparation process, additive engineering, interface modification, and transport material selection. Furthermore, the application of CsPbI2Br in tandem solar cells and its large-area development are highlighted. Finally, the challenges and outlook of CsPbI2Br PSCs are discussed for further performance improvement and future practical deployment.

Abstract

Various types of fluorescent carbon nanoparticles, often called carbon dots (CDs), are synthesized by different polycondensation methods: microwave irradiation, hydrothermal conditions or solution chemistry at ambient temperature with subsequent chemical functionalization. The CDs are deposited on TiO2 films to be probed as electron transport layers in perovskite photovoltaics and the anode for photoelectrochemical water splitting. Nitrogen CDs, which do not contain oxygen, lead to an increase of around 50 mV in the open circuit voltage of perovskite solar cells. All the CD types produce an improved photocurrent in water splitting, particularly CDs that are functionalized with thiol groups and butyl chains. It is demonstrated that the modified electrode is stable under continuous operation. Other electrochemical characteristics of the electrode, such as the voltammogram shape, onset potentials and open circuit potentials, remain nearly unchanged upon the deposition of CDs. Only the incident photon to current conversion efficiency improves clearly, extending the absorption range by around 20 nm towards longer wavelengths. This study provides new data about mechanisms and electrode arrangements for improving the performance of n-type semiconductors in photovoltaic cells and photoelectrochemical hydrogen production.

Abstract

Although perovskite solar cells have achieved great breakthroughs in photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE), some challenges still need to be addressed before commercialization. Lead leakage is harmful to the environment and many methods are developed to prevent lead leakage; among them, chemical adsorption has proved to be an effective way. Herein, a simple and low‐cost strategy that can enhance the device performance and mitigate the lead leakage by applying l‐phenylalanine in the interface of NiOx/perovskite is reported. The results show that this strategy can improve the morphology and conductivity of the NiOx film, optimize the NiOx/perovskite interface energy level, resulting in an efficient and stable device with a PCE of 19.0%. Furthermore, the interface modification improves the stability of the perovskite film through strong interaction with the perovskite, inhibits the decomposition of the film in water, slows down the process of lead leakage, and protects the environment from lead pollution. The devices maintain 86% initial efficiency for 200 h maximum power point measurement and 94% for 2100 h under nitrogen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Over the past few years, all‐inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs), especially CsPbI2Br PSCs, have received much attention because of their excellent thermal stability and a suitable trade‐off between light absorption and higher phase stability among the family of inorganic perovskites. In this progress report, the realization of highly efficient and stable CsPbI2Br PSCs is summarized through preparation process, additive engineering, interface modification, and transport material selection. Furthermore, the application of CsPbI2Br in tandem solar cells and its large‐area development are highlighted. Abstract

Understanding defects is of paramount importance for the development of stable halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, isolating their distinctive effects on device efficiency and stability is currently a challenge. We report that adding the organic molecule 3-phosphonopropionic acid (H3pp) to the halide perovskite results in unchanged overall optoelectronic performance while having a tremendous effect on device stability. We obtained PSCs with ∼21% efficiency that retain ∼100% of the initial efficiency after 1,000 h at the maximum power point under simulated AM1.5G illumination. The strong interaction between the perovskite and the H3pp molecule through two types of hydrogen bonds (HI and OH) leads to shallow point defect passivation that has a significant effect on device stability but not on the non-radiative recombination and device efficiency. We expect that our work will have important implications for the current understanding and advancement of operational PSCs.

Abstract

Halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have already demonstrated power conversion efficiencies above 25%, which makes them one of the most attractive photovoltaic technologies. However, one of the main bottlenecks towards their commercialization is their long-term stability, which should exceed the 20-year mark. Additive engineering is an effective pathway for the enhancement of device lifetime. Additives applied as organic or inorganic compounds, improve crystal grain growth enhancing power conversion efficiency. The interaction of their functional groups with the halide perovskite (HP) absorber, as well as with the transport layers, results in defect passivation and ion immobilization improving device performance and stability. In this review, we briefly summarize the different types of additives recently applied in PSC to enhance not only efficiency but also long-term stability. We discuss the different mechanism behind additive engineering and the role of the functional groups of these additives for defect passivation. Special emphasis is given to their effect on the stability of PSCs under environmental conditions such as humidity, atmosphere, light irradiation (UV, visible) or heat, taking into account the recently reported ISOS protocols. We also discuss the relation between deep-defect passivation, non-radiative recombination and device efficiency, as well as the possible relation between shallow-defect passivation, ion immobilization and device operational stability. Finally, insights into the challenge and criteria for additive selection are provided for the further stability enhancement of PSCs.

Abstract

Capacitive response at long time scales seems to remain an elusive feature in the analysis of the electrical properties of perovskite-based solar cells. It belongs to one of the critical anomalous effects that arises from the characteristic phenomenology of this type of emerging photovoltaic devices. Thereby, accurately deducing key capacitance feature of new light harvesting perovskites from electrical measurements represents a significant challenge regarding the interpretation of physical processes and the control of undesired mechanisms, such as slow dynamic effects and/or current density–voltage (J–V) hysteresis. Herein, it is shown that long timescale mechanisms that give rise to hysteresis in stable and high-efficiency quadruple-cation perovskites are not due to a classical capacitive behavior in the sense of ideal charge accumulation processes. Instead, it is a phenomenological consequence of slow memory-based capacitive currents and the underlying cooperative relaxations. A fractional dynamics approach, based on the idea of capacitance distribution in perovskite devices, reliably models the slow transient phenomena and the consequent scan-rate- and bias-dependent hysteresis. Observable for a wide variety of photovoltaic halide perovskites, distributed capacitive effects are rather universal anomalous phenomena, which can be related to the long-time electrical response and hysteresis.

Abstract

All‐inorganic perovskites have attracted substantial interest due to their outstanding thermal stability. However, the device performance is still inferior to the typical organic–inorganic counterparts because of the unsatisfying phase stability and defects of the inorganic perovskite films. Herein, a multistrategy to optimize CsPbI2Br perovskite solar cells (PSCs) based on dopant‐free poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) by applying thienylmethylamine acetate additive to enhance the α phase stability and passivate the bulk defects of CsPbI2Br perovskite is successfully demonstrated, followed by implementing BTCIC‐4Cl interlayer at CsPbI2Br/P3HT interface, which can coordinate with both perovskite and P3HT to suppress the surface defects and promote the hole transport. Benefitting from these, a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.3% is achieved, and the unencapsulated optimized device can retain 97% of the initial PCE after aging under N2 atmosphere at 85 °C for 530 h. This work opens up a new era of multistrategy for improving performance and stability of CsPbI2Br PSCs based on dopant‐free hole transport layer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Various types of fluorescent carbon nanoparticles, often called carbon dots (CDs), are synthesized by different polycondensation methods: microwave irradiation, hydrothermal conditions or solution chemistry at ambient temperature with subsequent chemical functionalization. The CDs are deposited on TiO films to be probed as electron transport layers in perovskite photovoltaics and the anode for photoelectrochemical water splitting. Nitrogen CDs, which do not contain oxygen, lead to an increase of around 50 mV in the open circuit voltage of perovskite solar cells. All the CD types produce an improved photocurrent in water splitting, particularly CDs that are functionalized with thiol groups and butyl chains. It is demonstrated that the modified electrode is stable under continuous operation. Other electrochemical characteristics of the electrode, such as the voltammogram shape, onset potentials and open circuit potentials, remain nearly unchanged upon the deposition of CDs. Only the incident photon to current conversion efficiency improves clearly, extending the absorption range by around 20 nm towards longer wavelengths. This study provides new data about mechanisms and electrode arrangements for improving the performance of n-type semiconductors in photovoltaic cells and photoelectrochemical hydrogen production.

Abstract

Carbon-based perovskite solar cells were manufactured by the screen-printing method using a triple mesoscopic layer of TiO2, ZrO2 and carbon. The perovskite solution was infiltrated at the TiO2/ZrO2 porous interface through the printed carbon layer on top of the ZrO2. Using a simple preheating of the substrates and the perovskite solution, a film deposited in air can be obtained. Using this method, an air-processed CPSC made under a humid atmosphere with 55% RH achieved a PCE of 10.35%.

Abstract

In the last decade, lead triiodide perovskite (APbI3) (A: organic cation) solar cells (PSCs) have been broadly studied due to their promising features related to the low cost, easy manufacturing process, and stability. Strategies to improve the device stability include the application of techniques such as compositional engineering of the cation of these halide perovskites, but it is still a complex task to find the right balance between the stability and power conversion efficiency of materials and complete devices. In this work, we performed a combined study of five samples of [5-AVA(1−x)MAx]PbI3 (5-AVA: ammonium valeric acid and MA: methylammonium) with x = 1.0, 0.75, 0.5, 0.25 and 0.0, using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and UV-VIS spectroscopy measurements in combination with periodic density functional theory (DFT) based calculations. Our samples showed an optical bandgap of 1.58 eV and the coexistence of the two phases as observed by XRD analyses. The theoretical results of the bandgaps for the no mixed phases (x = 1.0 and x = 0.0) show good agreement with the experiment, obtaining bandgap values overestimated by 0.18 eV and 0.33 eV, respectively. A direct relation between the number of 5-AVA ions in the samples and the stability of the phases was theoretically found and proved through the increment observed in the bandgap and the cohesive energy. We proposed a compositional strategy for perovskites [5-AVA(1−x)MAx]PbI3 with x values of at most 0.5, based on the small blue-shift and the low absorbance reduction of the spectrum curve, added to the small phase stabilization found.

Abstract

Improving the long-term stability of perovskite solar cells is critical to the deployment of this technology. Despite the great emphasis laid on stability-related investigations, publications lack consistency in experimental procedures and parameters reported. It is therefore challenging to reproduce and compare results and thereby develop a deep understanding of degradation mechanisms. Here, we report a consensus between researchers in the field on procedures for testing perovskite solar cell stability, which are based on the International Summit on Organic Photovoltaic Stability (ISOS) protocols. We propose additional procedures to account for properties specific to PSCs such as ion redistribution under electric fields, reversible degradation and to distinguish ambient-induced degradation from other stress factors. These protocols are not intended as a replacement of the existing qualification standards, but rather they aim to unify the stability assessment and to understand failure modes. Finally, we identify key procedural information which we suggest reporting in publications to improve reproducibility and enable large data set analysis.

In general, the orientation of polarization greatly determines the composition of adsorbates present on a ferroelectric surface as well as their sticking coefficients. In the case of thin ferroelectric films, interfacial electrochemical effects can become dominant, creating permanent imprints to bulk ferroelectric polarization or fixing polarization direction. Up to now, focus has been placed on the interplay of adsorbates that normally exist in ambient conditions on ferroelectric surfaces, such as water molecules and carbonates, known to play a critical role as external screening agents as dipole molecules and also by providing ionic species after dissociation. Still, the composition of adsorbates layers in ambient conditions shows a low level of control and reproducibility since it is strongly dependent on the history and storage conditions of the samples and moreover, it leads to remarkable aging of ferroelectric polarization. An alternative to prevent environmental damage of ferroelectric surfaces is to gain control on the adsorbate layer by the molecular functionalization of surfaces, providing the right chemical stability while keeping enough electrochemical reversibility to allow ferroelectric polarization switching. In this contribution we will show our initial results on BaTiO3 thin films functionalized with self-assembled layers (SAMs) of organic and electronically active molecules. The combined use of Piezoelectric Force Microscopy (PFM) and Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy (KPFM) enabled us to study ferroelectric properties of thin films and their surface composition respectively. In this sense, we were able to probe the presence of the molecules on the surfaces on the base of KPFM measurements that revealed the difference in work function between functionalized and bare BaTiO3 thin films. Local hysteresis loops were probed by Switching Spectroscopy PFM (SS-PFM) measurements, whereby an increment of coercive fields of about three times was observed upon molecular deposition. We observed that organic molecules tend to protect the polarization of BaTiO3 thin films in both directions, while keeping ferroelectric switchability.
