14. New insights into the origin of buckwheat cultivation in southwestern China from pollen data.

Abstract

Summary: Buckwheat is an important crop which originated in China and spread widely across Eurasia. However, exactly where in China domestication took place remains controversial. Archaeological and palynological records suggest a longer cultivation history of buckwheat in northern China than in southwestern China, but this conflicts with phylogenetic evidence implicating southwestern China as the centre of origin and diversity of buckwheat.We investigate alternative methodologies for inferring the occurrence of buckwheat cultivation and suggest that relative abundance could provide a reliable measure for distinguishing between wild and cultivated buckwheat in both present‐day and fossil samples.Approximately 12 800‐yr palaeoecological record shows that Fagopyrum pollen occurred only infrequently before the early Holocene. As southwestern China entered the early agricultural period, c. 8000–7000 yr ago, a slight increase in abundance of Fagopyrum pollen was observed. Approximately 4000 yr ago, concurrent with the Pu minority beginning to develop dry‐land agriculture, the abundance of Fagopyrum pollen increased significantly, suggesting the cultivation of this crop. Fagopyrum pollen rose to a maximum value c. 1270 yr ago, suggesting an intensification of agricultural activity.These findings fill a gap in the Fagopyrum pollen record in southwestern China and provide new indications that early cultivation may have occurred in this region. Abstract

To determine the distribution pattern of the threshing and separating device, the simulation experiment on the distribution pattern of our self-designed drum-shape bar-tooth longitudinal axial flow threshing and separating device was carried out with the help of the EDEM software, by which the axial and radial distribution curve of the threshed mixture along the cylinder was acquired. The three-dimensional distribution of the mass of the threshed mixture was drawn by using the Matlab software, and the bench test was carried out on the self-built small-scale longitudinal axial flow threshing cylinder performance test platform, which was consistent with the simulation conditions. The results showed that the axial and radial distribution of the threshed mixture was uneven, and the axial distribution of the threshed mixture decreased gradually, which was mainly distributed in the first third section of the cylinder. The distribution of the threshed mixture along the radial area of the cylinder was gradually decreasing at first and then increasing, i.e., the total mass of the threshed mixture on the left and right sides was higher than that of the middle area, which was basically consistent with the simulation results. The research can provide reference for the optimization of structural parameters of threshing and separating device and cleaning system.

Abstract

Opium poppy, coca and cannabis are raw materials for three notorious illicit drugs. For a long time, drug lords have been growing and smuggling these drugs in a variety of ways and channels and are continually finding new ways of trafficking their wares, which has led to the increasing difficulty of global drug enforcement. In the present paper, we propose an innovative pollen identification system for these important drug plants, which provides a tool for screening and detection of the drugs to aid in drug enforcement. By utilizing the characteristics of these fine particles, their abundant production, and high resistance to decay, we believe this tool could be applied in the following scenarios: detecting and dynamically monitoring drug cultivation activities; determining whether a suspect has been to fields of drug plants and determining whether the site has ever been planted with a drug plant and/or was involved in drug production. In the future, combined with microscope automatic image acquisition technology and intelligent image recognition technology, this pollen identification system is expected to be used to screen three notorious illicit drug plants, thus enhancing the efficiency of drug related crime investigations. 37. Study on Decomposition Technology of Aluminum Hydroxide Flame Retardant Prepared from Waste Liquid of Aluminum Air Battery.

Abstract

Three technologies including carbon decomposition, seed decomposition and their combination are used for spent aluminum air battery electrolyte decomposition, and the particle size of aluminum hydroxide after decomposed phase, poor differential thermal weight change and surface morphology were analysized. The results show that the aluminum hydroxide produced by the carbon decomposition process has a large particle size and coarse particles and cannot be used as a flame retardant; The particle size and morphology of aluminum hydroxide prepared by the combined process of seed decomposition and seed decomposition and carbon separation meet the requirements of flame retardant aluminum hydroxide. In the preparation of aluminum hydroxide by the combination decomposition of seed and carbon, the decomposition rate was more than 90%, which was much higher than that of the seed and carbon separation process. Abstract

Members of the Chenopodiaceae are the most dominant elements in the central Asian desert. The different genera and species within this family are common in desert vegetation types. Should it prove possible to link pollen types in this family to specific desert vegetation, it would be feasible to trace vegetation successions in the geological past. Nevertheless, the morphological similarity of pollen grains in the Chenopodiaceae rarely permits identification at the generic level. Although some pollen classifications of Chenopodiaceae have been proposed, none of them tried to link pollen types to specific desert vegetation types in order to explore their ecological significance. Based on the pollen morphological characters of 13 genera and 24 species within the Chenopodiaceae of eastern central Asia, we provide a new pollen classification of this family with six pollen types and link them to those plant communities dominated by Chenopodiaceae, for example, temperate dwarf semi‐arboreal desert (Haloxylon type), temperate succulent halophytic dwarf semi‐shrubby desert (Suaeda, Kalidium, and Atriplex types), temperate annual graminoid desert (Kalidium type), temperate semi‐shrubby and dwarf semi‐shrubby desert (Kalidium, Iljini, and Haloxylon types), and alpine cushion dwarf semi‐shrubby desert (Krascheninnikovia type). Abstract

SummaryThis study reviews the results of the surgical management of 154 cases of ruptured aneurysm of the sinus of Valsalva. Of the patients0 73% were male, with an average age of 28 years. An associated ventricular septal defect was found in 40% and 23% had aortic valvar regurgitation. The aneurysms originated from the right coronary sinus in 79% and from the non-coronary sinus in the remainders. The aneurysms ruptured into the right ventricle in 73%, into the right atrium in 27% and into the left ventricle in less than 1%. Operative mortality was 4.5%. Long-term follow-up was achieved in 80% of patients, with a mean duration of 5.7 years and a range from two months to 29 years. Preoperative aortic regurgitation and preoperative functional class (NYHA III or IV) were both predictive of a worse long-term outcome. The optimal surgical approach was closure of the distal end of the fistula by direct suture together with reinforcement of the aortic sinus with a Dacron patch.
