10. Griffiths phase and symmetry breaking in the hidden-order phase of URu2Si2

Abstract

The heavy-fermion compound URu2Si2 exhibits a hidden-order phase below the temperature, ~ 17.5 K. In spite of intense research for past three decades, no consensus on the order parameter exists and the nature has posed a long-standing mystery. Here we report the discovery of a Griffiths phase within the hidden-order phase, characterized by residual short-range correlations on the collapse of long-range orders due to the dilution effects. In the Griffiths phase scenario, strong evidence are provided for those cluster-like spins, such as the unique power-law behavior of magnetic susceptibility and specific heat as well as the frequency dispersion of AC susceptibility. In this way, the existence of an order parameter is excluded, and the hidden order has a significant kinship with the long-range large-moment antiferromagnetism which is accessible by tuning the hydrostatic pressure or the chemical pressure (i.e., isoelectronic Fe doping). Moreover, an unidirectional anisotropy of resistivity measurements in rotating magnetic fields is observed in the hidden-order phase. The anisotropic magnetoresistance and the associated broken symmetries directly reflect the freezing behavior of at least part of magnetic clusters. Thus, the demonstrations of the Griffiths phase as an alternative proposal for the hidden-order phase of URu2Si2 are very promising, challenging the understanding of exotic electronic states in correlated matter and quantum materials.

12. Three-dimensional bulk electronic structure of the Kondo lattice CeIn3 revealed by photoemission

Abstract

We show the three-dimensional electronic structure of the Kondo lattice CeIn3 using soft x-ray angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy in the paramagnetic state. For the first time, we have directly observed the three-dimensional topology of the Fermi surface of CeIn3 by photoemission. The Fermi surface has a complicated hole pocket centred at the {\Gamma}-Z line and an elliptical electron pocket centred at the R point of the Brillouin zone. Polarization and photon-energy dependent photoemission results both indicate the nearly localized nature of the 4f electrons in CeIn3, consistent with the theoretical prediction by means of the combination of density functional theory and single-site dynamical meanfield theory. Those results illustrate that the f electrons of CeIn3, which is the parent material of CeMIn5 compounds, are closer to the localized description than the layered CeMIn5 compounds.

34. Epidemiological analysis of maternal deaths in Hunan province in China between 2009 and 2014.

Abstract

BACKGROUND:The control of maternal deaths continues to be a significant public health issue and commands an enormous amount of attention, especially under the future family planning policy. Here, we describe the epidemiology and trends of maternal deaths in Hunan province, and give several policy implications. METHODS:Maternal deaths in Hunan province between 2009 and 2014 were retrospectively reviewed and analyzed. Cochran-Armitage trend test was used to assess the time trends of maternal mortality rates. Binary logistic regression analyses were undertaken to identify the factors that were associated with unavoidable maternal deaths. RESULTS:In total, there were 987 maternal deaths, with the overall MMR declining by 45.24%. The most common causes of maternal death during this period were pregnancy complications (28.37%), obstetric hemorrhage (25.33%), and amniotic fluid embolism (15.70%). Obstetric hemorrhage (28.14%) was higher in rural areas, while pregnancy complications were higher (29.27%) in urban areas. In all, 627 (63.5%) deaths were avoidable. The risk factors associated with unavoidable maternal deaths was above 35 years (aOR = 1.80 95%CI: 1.27-2.55), without prenatal examination (aOR = 8.97 95%CI: 1.11-7.78), low household incomes (aOR = 1.15 95%CI: 1.02-1.29), without adopting the new way to deliver (aOR = 5.15 95%CI: 3.20-8.31), and death location (aOR = 1.09 95%CI: 1.02-1.18). The most frequent and important factors associated with avoidable deaths was improper knowledge and skills of the county medical institutions. CONCLUSIONS:Moderate progress was made in reducing the MMR in Hunan province. The government should aim to improve the basic midwifery skills in rural areas and the obstetric emergency rescue service for critically ill pregnant women in urban areas, and strengthen training to improve knowledge and skills in medical institutions in counties.

35. Pain assessment during physiotherapy and noxious stimuli in patients with disorders of consciousness: A preliminary study

Abstract

ObjectivesThe primary purpose of this study is to determine whether patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC) (unresponsive wakefulness syndrome, UWS; minimally conscious state, MCS) experience pain during physiotherapy and noxious stimuli in a larger patient population.Materials and methodsThe patients’ level of consciousness was measured with the Coma Recovery Scale-Revised (CRS-R). Additionally, the Nociception Coma Scale-revised (NCS-R) was used to assess their pain response. The NCS-R total scores between UWS and MCS at baseline, physiotherapy and noxious stimulus were compared using the Mann-Whitney U test (Wilcoxon rank-sum test) and the Kruskal-Wallis H test with Bonferroni correction.ResultsThe study enrolled 93 participants. There was a statistically significant difference in NCS-R total scores between the three conditions (H = 215.25, p < 0.001). At baseline, there was no statistically significant difference between MCS and UWS (U = 378, z = –1.35, p = 0.178). While there was a statistically significant difference between MCS and UWS during physiotherapy (U = 1,362, z = –3.06, p < 0.01) and under noxious stimuli (U = 5142.5, z = –11.22, p < 0.001).ConclusionPhysiotherapy improved the activity responsiveness of DOC patients, and patients experienced less potential pain. However, some DOC patients, especially MCS patients, perceived pain under the noxious stimuli.
