Abstract Rice serves as a vital staple food, but its accumulation of cadmium (Cd) has sparked widespread concerns regarding food safety and ecosystem security. Here, we conducted a seven-year systematic field experiment in the Xiangjiang River Basin of China, where an integrated governance framework (IGF) was established to ensure rice safety. The IGF, tailored to geographical zoning and pollution gradation, includes targeted soil treatments, crop management strategies, and stakeholder engagement. The quality of both the soil and the crop was improved, with a reduction in soil Cd availability of 36%, and a decrease in Cd in rice grain of 57-78%. This framework not only addresses multiple challenges but also supports sustainable development goals (SDGs 2, 3, 6, 9) by fostering comprehensive synergies among science, policy, and local community participation. Our findings provide empirical guidance for safe rice production in Cd-contaminated areas and provide solid scientific-driven decision support globally.

In response to the safety risks posed by cadmium (Cd)-contaminated rice fields worldwide, a suitable production-and-restoration strategy is required for actual agricultural practices. To investigate the remediation effects of different accumulation varieties in rapeseed−rice cropping systems and their influence on Cd migration and transportation, field experiments were conducted based on different planting combinations (FWHR, conventional rice variety (HR) monoculture under fallow; FWLR, low Cd-accumulating rice variety (LR) monoculture under fallow; LOLR, LO (low Cd-accumulating rapeseed variety)-LR rotation; LOHR, LO-HR rotation; HOLR, HO (high Cd-accumulating rapeseed variety)-LR rotation; HOHR, HO-HR rotation). The study found that a rapeseed and rice rotation with appropriate varieties could reduce the rice grain Cd content, increase rice yield, and remove soil Cd without affecting agricultural production efficiency. Compared to the fallow-conventional rice pattern, various rapeseed−rice rotations reduced the Cd content of rice grains by 15 %–38 %, and significantly increased the available potassium (Ava-K) in the subsequent rice soil by 29.6–56.4 mg/kg. The total economic benefits increased by $500–$1800 per hectare. A high accumulation variety of rapeseed and low accumulation variety of rice produced the most effective reduction in Cd levels, with a reduction rate of 38 % in brown rice and an annual removal rate of 24.42 g/hm2. This combination also resulted in a 29 % increase in rice yield compared to the fallow-low accumulation variety rice pattern. Structural equation modeling revealed that with the combined action of crop rotation and variety selection the crop rotation directly reduced the soil available Cd or had an indirect effect by weakening the root-zone acidification effect and increasing soil Ava-P. The rotation of rapeseed and rice with carefully selected matching varieties is a feasible solution for the safe production and pollution remediation of Cd-contaminated paddy fields.

In investigating the spatiotemporal patterns and spatial attributes of carbon storage across terrestrial ecosystems, there is a significant focus on improving regional carbon sequestration capabilities. Such endeavors are crucial for balancing land development with ecological preservation and promoting sustainable, low-carbon urban growth. This study employs the integrated InVEST-PLUS model to assess and predict changes in ecosystem carbon storage under various land use scenarios within the Chengdu urban cluster, a vital region in Central and Western China, by 2050. The results indicate the following. (1) A linkage between land use dynamics and ecosystem carbon storage changes: over two decades, a 7.5% decrease in arable land was observed alongside a 12.3% increase in urban areas, leading to an 8.2% net reduction in ecosystem carbon storage, equating to a loss of 1.6 million tons of carbon. (2) Carbon storage variations under four scenarios—natural development (NDS), urban development (UDS), farmland protection (FPS), and ecological protection (EPS)—highlight the impact of differing developmental and conservation policies on Chengdu’s carbon reserves. Projections until 2050 suggest a further 5% reduction in carbon storage under NDS without intervention, while EPS could potentially decrease carbon storage loss by 3%, emphasizing the importance of strategic land use planning and policy. This research provides a solid theoretical foundation for exploring the relationship between land use and carbon storage dynamics further. In summary, the findings highlight the necessity of incorporating ecological considerations into urban planning strategies. The InVEST-PLUS model not only sheds light on current challenges but also presents a method for forecasting and mitigating urbanization effects on ecosystem services, thus supporting sustainable development goals.

Toxic elements, such as Cd and Pb are of primary concern for soil quality and food security owing to their high toxicity and potential for bioaccumulation. Knowledge of the spatial variability of Cd and Pb in soil–rice systems across the landscape and identification of their driving factors are prerequisites for developing appropriate management strategies to remediate or regulate these hazardous contaminants. Considering the role of rice (Oryza sativa) as a dietary staple in China, this study aimed to examine the distribution patterns and drivers of Cd and Pb in tropical soil–rice systems across Hainan Island. To achieve this goal, 229 pairs of representative paddy soil and rice samples combined with a set of environmental covariates at the island scale were systematically analyzed. Arithmetic mean values (AMs) of Cd and Pb in rice were 0.080 and 0.199 mg kg−1, and exceeded the standard limits by 27.1% and 22.7%, respectively. We found that the AMs of Cd and Pb concentrations in paddy soil were 0.294 and 43.0 mg kg−1. Additionally, Cd in 29.26% of soil samples and Pb in 11.35% of soil samples exceeded the risk screening value for toxic elements. The enrichment factor generally showed that soil Cd and Pb on Hainan Island were both moderately enriched. Results obtained from both Spearman's correlation and stepwise regression analyses suggest that the concentrations of soil Cd and Pb are significantly influenced by the soil Na and Fe concentrations. Specifically, an increment of 1 g kg−1 in soil Na caused a rise of soil Cd and Pb by 57.1 mg kg−1 and 34.4 mg kg−1, respectively, while an increase of 1 g kg−1 in soil Fe resulted in a rise by 25.0 mg kg−1 and 14.5 mg kg−1. Similarly for rice grains, an increment of 1 g kg−1 in soil Ca resulted in a rise of rice Pb by 30.8 mg kg−1, whereas an increase of 1 g kg−1 in soil Mg led to a decrease in rice Pb by 14.8 mg kg−1. However, no significant correlation between soil Se and rice Cd concentrations was found. Furthermore, the result of geographically weighted regression revealed that the impacts of soil Na, Ca, Fe, and Mg on rice Cd were more significant in the western region, whereas the effects of soil Na and Fe on rice Pb were stronger in the northeastern region. This study provides new insights for the identification of factors influencing the distribution and accumulation of Cd and Pb in tropical island agroecosystems.

Abstract In this paper, a cyber‐physical description of mixed traffic that can reflect the interaction between vehicles is first proposed. By treating vehicles as nodes and the cyber‐physical interaction between vehicles as directed edges between nodes, the network of vehicles in traffic is obtained. The small‐world and scale‐free characteristics of mixed traffic are found under this description. Then the CPS‐based pinning approach for achieving indirect control of HVs is proposed. Besides the control algorithm of pinning nodes, the impact of the spatial distribution of automated vehicles on traffic is studied. The approach is compatible with the existing control of automated vehicle in mixed vehicle platoon. Numerical simulation results under three‐lane scenario illustrated the effectiveness of the proposed pinning approach.

There is a growing concern about human health of residents living in areas where mining and smelting occur. In order to understand the exposure to the potentially toxic elements (PTEs), we here identify and examine the cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) in scalp hair of residents living in the mining area (Bayan Obo, n = 76), smelting area (Baotou, n = 57) and a reference area (Hohhot, n = 61). In total, 194 hair samples were collected from the volunteers (men = 87, women = 107) aged 5–77 years old in the three areas. Comparing median PTEs levels between the young and adults, Ni levels were significantly higher in adults living in the smelting area while Cr was highest in adults from the mining area, no significant difference was found for any of the elements in the reference area. From the linear regression model, no significant relationship between PTEs concentration, log10(PTEs), and age was found. The concentrations of Ni, Cd, and Pb in hair were significantly lower in the reference area when compared to both mining and smelting areas. In addition, Cu was significantly higher in the mining area when compared to the smelting area. Factor analysis (FA) indicated that men and women from the smelting area (Baotou) and mining area (Bayan Obo), respectively, had different underlying communality of log10(PTEs), suggesting different sources of these PTEs. Multiple factor analysis quantilized the importance of gender and location when combined with PTEs levels in human hair. The results of this study indicate that people living in mining and/or smelting areas have significantly higher PTEs (Cu, Ni, Cd, and Pb) hair levels compared to reference areas, which may cause adverse health effects. Remediation should therefore be implemented to improve the health of local residents in the mining and smelting areas.

This study evaluated the performance of humic acid (HA)/ferrous ion (Fe (II)) activating persulfate (PS) for fluorene (FLU) degradation. Results showed that HA/Fe(II)/PS system exhibited the best performance for PS activation to eliminate FLU. Compared to the non-activated case, the degradation efficiency of FLU had increased by 37%–43% in HA activated PS system. HA had significant synergistic effects on Fe (II) activated PS process, but ferric ion (Fe(III)) inhibited the degradation. We confirmed that semiquinone radical (SQ·-) acted as the dominant activating group by quenching and electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments, which promoted more radicals generated. The proportion of benzoquinone (BQ) and Fe(II) wielded a considerable influence on FLU degradation, and the optimal concentration ratio was 1:1. Four possible degradation pathways of FLU were deduced, involving ring-opening of the aromatic ring, decarboxylation, oxidative dehydrogenation and hydroxylation.

This paper presents a novel chain model named soil–food–human (SFH) for clarifying the biogeochemical cascades among the triple challenges of cadmium contamination, food safety, and related public health effect. The model was developed based on the integration of spatial distribution pattern of soil environment and the biogeochemical process of cadmium in soil–rice–human health, and it was validated through a case study. In soil environment terms, SFH predicted the spatial distribution of soil properties with an average prediction accuracy of 82.28%. In food production terms, the SFH can identify the safe production zones for planting rice and unsafe area for adjusting cropping systems with a relative error of 39.41%. In food consumption terms, SFH mapped the high-resolution map of cadmium exposure dose, which gives a new solution to assess the food safety risks for self-sufficient populations. For the health effect of rice cadmium exposure, SFH simulated the spatiotemporal pattern of urinary cadmium based on toxicokinetic which revealed the health effect of rice cadmium exposure. The chain model provides a new insight in understanding the biogeochemical cascades between food production, food safety, and public health, making it possible to develop a comprehensive strategy to tackle cadmium pollution in soil–rice–human health system.

The mining and production of mineral resources can directly lead to soil and water pollution, posing a serious threat to human health. In this study, the Taojia River basin, a tributary of the Xiangjiang River, was selected as the study area. Based on the concentrations of heavy metals (As, Cd, Pb, and Zn) in 653 soil/substrate samples collected from 342 points in the study area in 2013 and 2021, the changes in soil heavy metal concentrations in the region were systematically analyzed to assess their environmental risks and impacts on regional environmental quality. The results showed that from 2013 to 2021, the As, Pb, and Zn pollution in regional soil, tailing sand, and surface water was reduced, while the Cd pollution increased. The average soil As, Pb, and Zn concentrations decreased from 3,750, 2,340, and 1,180 mg/kg to 457, 373, and 387mg/kg, respectively, while the Cd concentration increased from 0.11to 1.91 mg/kg; additionally, the overall distribution trend of heavy metal concentrations was high in the south, low in the north, and gradually decreased from upstream to downstream. The single evaluation index of heavy metal pollution risk showed that the percentages of medium to heavy pollution points in the soil As, Pb, and Zn were 84, 57, and 28%, respectively, in 2013, and this index decreased to 38, 37, and 25%, respectively, in 2021. The regional environmental quality was closely related to the intensity of mineral resource development. From 2000 to 2010, frequent mining development activities led to an increase in the area of construction land and a continuous decrease in the area of arable land, grassland, and vegetation cover in the region. During 2010–2020, the area of construction land decreased, and the vegetation coverage increased. The comprehensive evaluation index showed that the overall soil pollution risk in the watershed decreased, and the proportion of heavily polluted points decreased from 80 to 65%. It was shown by principal component analysis and factor analysis that mining development activities were the largest source of heavy metal pollution, in addition to mixed sources of tailings, solid waste, agriculture, and traffic emission sources. The results provide a scientific basis for the management and risk control of heavy metal pollution in the Taojia River basin.

It is known that marine cable is responsible for the transmission of electric energy and electrical signals of the ship. In order to predict the residual life of cable under discontinuous operation, a non‐destructive online life prediction model is established based on retention rate of hardness (RRH). This study takes the marine ethylene propylene rubber (EPR) cable as the research object. Using time temperature superposition principle, the optimal time temperature shift factor is calculated using particle swarm optimisation and steepest descent method. After that the main curve was fitted exponentially to acquire the relationship between RRH and ageing time. Compared with the existing model, the results indicate that the proposed model has higher prediction accuracy. On this basis, the residual life prediction model based on RRH of marine EPR under discontinuous operation is presented by adding time parameters. The effectiveness of the method is verified by simulation. Thus, it provides theoretical guidance for solving the problem of marine cable replacement time.

Paddy rice agriculture in Southern China, especially Hunan Province, has been suffered from soil contamination. Several policies including rice fallow and decreasing cropping intensity have been implemented for food safety here. It is thus important to monitor rice planting area and cropping intensity to understand the effectiveness of those land-use policies. However, it is challenging to map rice planting areas due to the complex cropping systems (mixed single- and double-cropping), persistent cloud covers, small crop fields, let alone cropping intensity. Here we used all the available Sentinel-2 and all-weather Sentinel-1 imagery to generate a time series data cube to extract paddy rice planting areas and the rice cropping intensity in the Changsha, Zhuzhou, and Xiangtan areas, which is a traditional rice-growing region with small farms in China. Specifically, we investigated the performances of different features (i.e., spectral, seasonal, polarization backscatter) by comparing five scenarios with different combinations of sensors and features, and identified the most suitable features for certain rice types (early, middle, and late rice). The random forest classifier was used for the classification in the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform, and a reference map in 2017 based on visual interpretation on the GaoFen-2 images were used for collecting the training and validation samples. The results showed the combined data from Sentinel-1/2 generally outperformed classifications using only a single sensor (Sentinel-1/2), but the contribution of different sensors to certain rice types varied. The early, middle and late rice with the highest accuracies within the five scenarios had the overall accuracies of 85%, 95%, and 95%, respectively (F1 = 0.55, 0.85, and 0.85). The compositing of different types of rice allowed us to generate the rice cropping intensity map with an overall accuracy of 81%, which to our limited knowledge is the first effort to map cropping intensity at 10-m resolution in such a fragmented subtropical region. The result showed the single cropping dominated the rice cropping system in the study area 88%, which used to be a typical area with double cropping of rice. Our study demonstrates the potential of mapping rice cropping intensity in a cloudy and highly fragmented region in South China using all the available Sentinel-1/2 data, which would advance our understanding of regional rice production and mitigation of soil contamination.

Plastic shed production system (PSPS) provide abundant vegetable products for human consumption. Comprehensive and accurate heavy metal (HM) risk assessment of soil and vegetable under plastic sheds is crucial for human health. Pollution assessment, bioavailability and mobility evaluation and health risk assessment of Cd, Cr, Cu, Zn Ni, Pb, and As were performed in a presentative Plastic shed production system. The concentrations of the Cd, Cu and Zn exceeded their background value. Positive Igeo values suggested that soil under plastic sheds was widely contaminated with Cd. The bioavailability of heavy metals in soils was evaluated using DTPA extraction and DGT methods. The results of both methods demonstrated that Cd, Cu, and Zn have high bioavailability, especially Cd. Analogically, the results of mobility assignment based on DIFS showed that Cd has a high migration risk due to the large available pool. Based on specific cultivation and management patterns of plastic shed production system, pH reduction and salt and nutrient accumulation may increase the heavy metals migration risk in soil under plastic sheds, while a high organic matter content may reduce the heavy metals migration risk. The average concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Zn, Ni, Pb, and As in vegetables were 0.023, 0.226, 0.654, 2.984, 0.329, 0.041, and 0.010 mg/kg, respectively. All samples were well below the threshold. The order of target hazard quotient of different heavy metals caused by vegetable consumption was Cd > Cr > As > Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, and the average total hazard index value was below 1, which demonstrated that risk of vegetable consumption in the study area. However, due to its high concentration and transfer coefficient in spinach, Cd might pose a health risk to humans, which requires special attention. In this study, Cd caused a significant issue than other HMs, whether pollution level, health risk and migration risk. DGT and DIFS can be used as an effective evaluation tool in the research of controlling heavy metals migration in soil-crop systems.

Biochars were studied for their impacts on the dissipation and vegetable uptake of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in an agricultural soil. The health risks of PAHs taken up by vegetables were assessed by growing Chinese cabbage in both unamended soil and biochar-amended soils. In the unamended soil, the total 16 PAHs (Σ16PAHs) content decreased by 77.38% after planting the vegetable. The dissipation percentages of low-molecular-weight PAHs (LMW-PAHs), medium-molecular-weight PAHs (MMW-PAHs), and high-molecular-weight PAHs (HMW-PAHs) were 82.37%, 72.65%, and 68.63%, respectively. An adaptive control approach is proposed for trajectory tracking and obstacle avoidance for mobile robots with consideration given to unknown sliding. A kinematic model of mobile robots is established in this paper, in which both longitudinal and lateral sliding are considered and processed as three time-varying parameters. A sliding model observer is introduced to estimate the sliding parameters online. A stable tracking control law for this nonholonomic system is proposed to compensate the unknown sliding effect. From Lyapunov-stability analysis, it is proved, regardless of unknown sliding, that tracking errors of the controlled closed-loop system are asymptotically stable, the tracking errors converge to zero outside the obstacle detection region and obstacle avoidance is guaranteed inside the obstacle detection region. The efficiency and robustness of the proposed control system are verified by simulation results.
