ObjectiveLong-term care needs have grown with population aging. This study explores the relationships among health status, healthcare expenditure, and long-term care insurance (LTCI) among the older adults.MethodsUsing data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS 2011, 2013, 2015, 2018, and 2020) and based on the demand model for healthcare services, this study employed the difference-in-difference (DID) method to assess how the implementation of LTCI contributed to the health status and healthcare expenditures of the older adults. The propensity score matching DID method (PSM-DID) and other tests were used to conduct further robustness checks.ResultsThe findings demonstrate a significant positive impact of LTCI on improving the health status and reducing healthcare expenditures in the elderly population. The PSM-DID indicates that LTCI can effectively improve the health status of the elderly population and reduce their healthcare spending.ConclusionsBased on the findings, the development of relevant policy frameworks for LTCI in China is recommended. These include consider the differences among the various pilot cities and social strata to allow policy adjustments and improvements in a timely, establish a dynamic and diversified long-term care insurance financing mechanism, encourage collaboration between medical institutions and elder care facilities, establish effective contact between LTCI and medical institutions, and use incentive policies such as tax relief to provide financial support and subsidies.

Abstract Ischemic stroke is a complex, high-mortality disease with multifactorial etiology and pathogenesis. Currently, drug therapy is mainly used treat ischemic stroke in clinic, but there are still some limitations, such as limited blood-brain barrier (BBB) penetration efficiency, a narrow treatment time window and drug side effects. Recent studies have pointed out that drug delivery systems based on polymeric nanocarriers can effectively improve the insufficient treatment for ischemic stroke. They can provide neuronal protection by extending the plasma half-life of drugs, enhancing the drug’s permeability to penetrate the BBB, and targeting specific structures and cells. In this review, we classified polymeric nanocarriers used for delivering ischemic stroke drugs and introduced their preparation methods. We also evaluated the feasibility and effectiveness and discussed the existing limitations and prospects of polymeric nanocarriers for ischemic stroke treatment. We hoped that this review could provide a theoretical basis for the future development of nanomedicine delivery systems for the treatment of ischemic stroke. Graphical Abstract

Cinnamides are common core structures that exist in a great number of pharmaceuticals and natural products. The development of efficient methods for preparing cinnamides is in great need. We report herein an efficient polyphosphoric acid (PPA)-promoted direct aldol condensation of an amide for the convenient and straightforward preparation of cinnamides. A variety of cinnamides were obtained in moderate-to-excellent yields (65–89%). This strategy features the use of equivalent amides and a short reaction time.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a common neurological disease with recognition ability loss symptoms and a major contributor to dementia cases worldwide. Gastrodia elata Bl. (GE), a food of medicine–food homology, has been reported to have a mitigating effect on memory and learning ability decline. However, the effect of GE fermented by Lactobacillus plantarum, Acetobacter pasteurianus, and Saccharomyces (FGE) on alleviating cognitive deficits in AD was not studied. Mice were randomly divided into six groups, control, model, donepezil, low, medium, and high doses of FGE, and D-Galactose/Aluminum chloride (D-Gal/AlCl3) was used to establish an AD-like mouse model. The results indicated that FGE could improve the production of neurotransmitters and relieve oxidative stress damage in AD-like mice, which was evidenced by the declined levels of amyloid-β (Aβ), Tau, P-Tau, acetylcholinesterase (AchE), and malondialdehyde (MDA), and increased acetylcholine (Ach), choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels in brain tissue. Notably, FGE could enhance the richness of the gut microbiota, especially for beneficial bacteria such as Lachnospira and Lactobacillus. Non-target metabolomics results indicated that FGE could affect neurotransmitter levels by regulating amino acid metabolic pathways to improve AD symptoms. The FGE possessed an ameliorative effect on AD by regulating neurotransmitters, oxidative stress levels, and gut microbiota and could be considered a good candidate for ameliorating AD.

Abstract Cooling the junction of a scanning tunneling microscope to millikelvin temperatures is fundamental for high-resolution scanning tunneling spectroscopy. However, accurately determining the junction temperature has proven elusive, due to the microscopic dimension of the junction and its continuous energy exchange with the surrounding environment. Here, we employ a millikelvin scanning tunnelling microscope cooled by an adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator. Using normal-metal and superconducting tips, we perform scanning tunnelling spectroscopy on an atomically clean surface of Al(100) in a superconducting state. By varying the refrigerator temperatures between 30 mK and 1.2 K, we show that the temperature of the junction is decoupled from the temperature of the surrounding environment. To corroborate our findings, we simulate the scanning tunnelling spectroscopy data with P(E) theory and determine that the junction has a temperature of 77 mK, despite its environment being at 1.5 K.

BackgroundThe pathogenesis of concomitant continuous pain remains unclear and is worthy of further study. In this clinical study, we aimed to explore the potential role of a narrow foramen ovale in the development of concomitant continuous pain.MethodsA total of 108 patients with classical trigeminal neuralgia affecting the third branch of the trigeminal nerve and 46 healthy individuals were enrolled in this study. Three-dimensional reconstructed computerized tomography images of all participants were collected, and the morphometric features of the foramen ovale were examined by two investigators who were blinded to the clinical data of the patients.ResultsIn this cohort, patients with concomitant continuous pain suffered from more sensory abnormalities (18.4% vs. 2.9%, p = 0.015) and responded more poorly to medication (74.3% vs. 91.9%, p = 0.018) than patients without concomitant continuous pain. While no significant differences regarding the mean length (5.02 mm vs. 5.36 mm, p > 0.05) and area (22.14 mm2 vs. 23.80 mm2, p > 0.05) were observed between patients with and without concomitant continuous pain, the mean width of the foramen ovale on the affected side in patients with concomitant continuous pain was significantly narrower than that in patients without concomitant continuous pain (2.01 mm vs. 2.48 mm, p = 0.003).ConclusionThis neuroimaging and clinical study demonstrated that the development of concomitant continuous pain was caused by the compression of the trigeminal nerve owing to a narrow foramen ovale rather than responsible vessels in classical trigeminal neuralgia.

The fermentation of Gastrodia elata Blume (GEB) is an extremely complex process, and abundant metabolites are produced, which have a great influence on the quality and flavor. The non-targeted metabolomics method was used to analyze the comprehensive changes of differential metabolites and key metabolic pathways in the fermentation process of GEB. After fermented for 60 d, carbohydrate, organic acid, peptide, and nucleic acid metabolites were 79.77%, 12.91%, 4.39% and 2.79%, respectively. Compared with unfermented GEB, the carbohydrates decreased obviously, while organic acid, peptide and nucleic acid metabolites increased. Extraction process for Q-markers from Rosa roxburghii using response surface methodology was optimized and HPLC method was established for simultaneous determination of their content. The extraction process of Q-marker from the root of Rosa roxburghii Tratt was optimized by single factor experiments and response surface methodology, and the four Q-markers (triterpenoids) in different parts (root, stem, leaf and fruit) of Rosa roxburghii Tratt were analyzed. Results showed that, through single factor experiments, the important factors affecting the yield of Q-markers were determined as solvent dosage, ethanol concentration, extraction time and extraction times. Response surface methodology was used to optimize the extraction process of Q-markers from Rosa roxburghii. The optimal extraction conditions were as follows: The solvent dosage was 1:25 g/mL, 70% ethanol was added, the extraction time was 30 min, and then the material was refluxed for 2 h. The yield of four Q-markers from the Rosa roxburghii leaves was 2.64%, including 0.99% of Kaji-ichigoside F1, 0.72% mg/g of rosamultin, 0.43% of rosolic acid and 0.51% of 2α,19α-dihydroxyursolic acid. The total content of Q-markers in different parts of Rosa roxburghii Tratt was in the order of leaves, roots, stems and fruits. This study would provide scientific reference for quality evaluation of Rosa roxburghii and development and utilization of total triterpenoids.

IntroductionThe current approaches that are used to treat ischemic stroke suffer from poor targeting, lack of effectiveness, and potential off-target effects, necessitating the development of new therapeutic strategies to enhance neuronal cell survival and regeneration. This study aimed to investigate the role of microglial Netrin-1 in ischemic stroke, a topic that has not been fully understood.MethodsNetrin-1 levels and its primary receptor expressions were investigated in cerebral microglia from acute ischemic stroke patients and age-matched control subjects. A public database (GEO148350), which supplied RNAseq results for rat cerebral microglia in a middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model, was analyzed to assess the expression of Netrin-1, its major receptors, and genes related to macrophage function. A microglia-specific gene targeting approach and a delivery system allowing for crossing the blood-brain barrier were applied in a mouse model for ischemic stroke to investigate the role of microglial Netrin-1. Netrin-1 receptor signaling in microglia was observed and the effects on microglial phenotype, apoptosis, and migration were analyzed.ResultsAcross human patients, rat and mouse models, activation of Netrin-1 receptor signaling was mainly conducted via its receptor UNC5a in microglia, which resulted in a shift in microglial phenotype towards an anti-inflammatory or M2-like state, leading to a reduction in apoptosis and migration of microglia. Netrin-1-induced phenotypic change in microglia exerted protective effects on neuronal cells in vivo during ischemic stroke.ConclusionOur study highlights the potential of targeting Netrin-1 and its receptors as a promising therapeutic strategy for promoting post-ischemic survival and functional recovery.

Background: Mechanical allodynia (MA) is one of the leading clinical symptoms of painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy (PDPN), which is a primary reason for non-traumatic amputations, foot ulceration, and gait abnormalities in patients with diabetes. However, the pathogenic mechanisms of MA have not yet been fully elucidated, and there is no effective treatment. This study aims to study the potential pathogenetic mechanisms of MA and to provide targets for the therapy of MA.Methods: A single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin induced type 1 diabetes in rat models. Subsequently, rats were divided into the control group, the diabetic group without MA, and the diabetic group with MA based on weekly behavioral assays. The differentially expressed lipids in the sciatic nerve of each group were detected using untargeted lipidomics, and the differentially expressed genes in the sciatic nerve of each group were detected by transcriptomics. The pathogenesis of MA was predicted using integrated analysis and validated by immunofluorescence staining and transmission electron microscopy.Results: Untargeted lipidomics revealed the accumulation of a more severe lipid in MA rats. Transcriptomics results suggested that differentially expressed genes in MA rats were primarily related to lipid droplets and myelin sheath. Integrated analysis results indicated that the downregulation of Cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) expression was closely linked to lipid metabolism disorders. Immunofluorescence staining demonstrated that down-regulation of CYP1A2 expression occurred in MA rats. Transmission electron microscopy results showed that more severe lipid droplet accumulation and myelin sheath degeneration occurred in MA rats.Conclusion: Our findings imply that the downregulation of CYP1A2 expression leads to disorders of lipid metabolism and further leads to lipid droplet accumulation and myelin sheath degeneration, which might ultimately lead to the development of MA. Therefore, our study contributes to promoting the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of MA and providing potential targets for the clinical treatment of MA.

BackgroundThe etiology of primary trigeminal neuralgia remains unclear and is worthy of further study; In this study, the morphometric characteristics of ovale foramina between various groups were compared and analyzed to explore the novel cause of primary trigeminal neuralgia.MethodsHigh-resolution three-dimensional reconstruction images from head computed tomography of 109 patients with primary trigeminal neuralgia affecting the third branch of the trigeminal nerve and 46 healthy controls were retrospectively reviewed. Among the 109 primary trigeminal neuralgia patients, 79 patients with apparent neurovascular compression (not simply contact) demonstrated on MRI or during surgery were divided into the classical trigeminal neuralgia group and 30 patients with MRI showing no significant abnormalities were divided into idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia group. The morphometric parameters including the area, width and length of ovale foramina were examined through the use of radiologic methods.ResultsIn this study, the average minimum area, width and length of 79 ovale foramina on the affected and unaffected sides in the classical trigeminal neuralgia group were 21.83 ± 8.45, 21.94 ± 7.93 mm2, 2.32 ± 0.91, 2.58 ± 0.81, 5.32 ± 1.29, and 5.26 ± 1.21 mm, respectively. No significant difference in these parameters was observed (p > 0.05). However, in the idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia group, the average minimum area, width and length of 30 ovale foramina were 21.33 ± 8.21, 22.85 ± 8.36 mm2, 2.25 ± 0.90, 2.79 ± 0.96, 5.20 ± 1.27, and 5.28 ± 1.19 mm, respectively. The width on the symptomatic side was significantly smaller (p = 0.03) than that on the asymptomatic side. No significant difference in area (p = 0.48) or length (p = 0.79) was observed. In addition, when compared with the healthy control group, the area and width of ovale foramina on the symptomatic side in both groups were significantly smaller. No significant difference in length was observed.ConclusionsBy comparing and analyzing the statistical data, it can be inferred that a narrow foramen ovale is associated with primary trigeminal neuralgia, as well as its recurrence after microvascular decompression.

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is a method that measures orbital and band structure contrast through the momentum distribution of photoelectrons. Its simplest interpretation is obtained in the plane-wave approximation, according to which photoelectrons propagate freely to the detector. The photoelectron momentum distribution is then essentially given by the Fourier transform of the real-space orbital. While the plane-wave approximation is remarkably successful in describing the momentum distributions of aromatic compounds, it generally fails to capture kinetic-energy-dependent final-state interference and dichroism effects. Focusing our present study on quasi-freestanding monolayer graphene as the archetypical two-dimensional (2D) material, we observe an exemplary E_{kin}-dependent modulation of, and a redistribution of spectral weight within, its characteristic horseshoe signature around the K[over ¯] and K[over ¯]^{′} points: both effects indeed cannot be rationalized by the plane-wave final state. Our data are, however, in remarkable agreement with ab initio time-dependent density functional simulations of a freestanding graphene layer and can be explained by a simple extension of the plane-wave final state, permitting the two dipole-allowed partial waves emitted from the C 2p_{z} orbitals to scatter in the potential of their immediate surroundings. Exploiting the absolute photon flux calibration of the Metrology Light Source, this scattered-wave approximation allows us to extract E_{kin}-dependent amplitudes and phases of both partial waves directly from photoemission data. The scattered-wave approximation thus represents a powerful yet intuitive refinement of the plane-wave final state in photoemission of 2D materials and beyond.

ObjectiveTo evaluate the efficacy of Paxlovid in treating Chinese elder patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 omicron variants.Materials and methodsWe performed a non-randomized, controlled trial in Shanghai, China. Participants infected with SARS-CoV-2 omicron variants were enrolled. All patients were divided into the Paxlovid group or the control group according to the Chinese guideline (version 9). The nucleic acid shedding time was the primary endpoint.ResultsAccording to the inclusion criteria, 142 patients infected with omicron variants were enrolled, 36 patients who did not receive paxlovid were assigned to the control group, and 106 were in the Paxlovid group. The baseline characteristics were similar in either group. No significant difference in BMI, age, time from onset to patient enrollment, the severity on first admission, vaccination status, comorbidity, first symptoms, and laboratory results were recorded. Compared to the control group, participants in the Paxlovid group had a shorter viral shedding time [11.11 (2.67) vs. 9.32 (2.78), P = 0.001].ConclusionIn Chinese elder patients infected with the variant of SARS-CoV-2 omicron, our data suggest that Paxlovid can significantly reduce the nucleic acid shedding time.

Establishing an effective method to enhance the adhesion of mortar on recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) is key to the utilization of RCA. In this paper, a novel and simple approach for strengthening the mortar layer of RCA by treatment with a crystallizing agent (CA) was proposed, and the effects of different treatment regime on the density, water absorption, mineral composition, and microstructure of RCA were determined. Moreover, the performance of CA-treated RCA in recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) was investigated, and its mechanism of the treatment was explored at both the microscopic and macroscopic levels. The results showed that CA treatment significantly improved the overall performance of RCA by increasing the density and calcium silicate hydrate (C–S–H) content, which enhanced the properties of the new and old interfacial transition zones and enhanced the mechanical properties of the RAC. The improvements were attributed to the reaction of CA with calcium-rich hydration products in the mortar layer of RCA, which formed C–S–H precipitates. The newly-formed C–S–H filled the pores of RCA and blocked cracks, which improved the compactness of the RCA.

Ultrathin dielectric/insulating films on metals are often used as decoupling layers to allow for the study of the electronic properties of adsorbed molecules without electronic interference from the underlying metal substrate. However, the presence of such decoupling layers may effectively change the electron donating properties of the substrate, for example, by lowering its work function and thus enhancing the charging of the molecular adsorbate layer through electron tunneling. Here, an experimental study of the charging of para-sexiphenyl (6P) on ultrathin MgO(100) films supported on Ag(100) is reported. By deliberately changing the work function of the MgO(100)/Ag(100) system, it is shown that the charge transfer (electronic coupling) into the 6P molecules can be controlled, and 6P monolayers with uncharged molecules (Schottky–Mott regime) and charged and uncharged molecules (Fermi level pinning regime) can be obtained. Furthermore, it was found that charge transfer and temperature strongly influence the orientation, conformation, and wetting behavior (physical coupling) of the 6P layers on the MgO(100) thin films.

Mechanical allodynia (MA) is the main reason that patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) seek medical advice. It severely debilitates the quality of life. Investigating hyperglycemia-induced changes in neural transcription could provide fundamental insights into the complex pathogenesis of painful DPN (PDPN). Gene expression profiles of physiological dorsal root ganglia (DRG) have been studied. However, the transcriptomic changes in DRG neurons in PDPN remain largely unexplored. In this study, by single-cell RNA sequencing on dissociated rat DRG, we identified five physiological neuron types and a novel neuron type MAAC (Fxyd7+/Atp1b1+) in PDPN. The novel neuron type originated from peptidergic neuron cluster and was characterized by highly expressing genes related to neurofilament and cytoskeleton. Based on the inferred gene regulatory networks, we found that activated transcription factors Hobx7 and Larp1 in MAAC could enhance Atp1b1 expression. Moreover, we constructed the cellular communication network of MAAC and revealed its receptor-ligand pairs for transmitting signals with other cells. Our molecular investigation at single-cell resolution advances the understanding of the dynamic peripheral neuron changes and underlying molecular mechanisms during the development of PDPN.

We report herein an efficient protocol for the synthesis of 4-vinylphenols by a catalyst-free decarboxylation of trans-4-hydroxycinnamic acids. A variety of 4-vinylphenols has been synthesized in moderate to excellent yields. This protocol also features no polymerization.

Hydrogen-bonding catalytic reactions have gained great interest. Herein, a hydrogen-bond-assisted three-component tandem reaction for the efficient synthesis of N-alkyl-4-quinolones is described. This novel strategy features the first proof of polyphosphate ester (PPE) as a dual hydrogen-bonding catalyst and the use of readily available starting materials for the preparation of N-alkyl-4-quinolones. The method provides a diversity of N-alkyl-4-quinolones in moderate to good yields. The compound 4h demonstrated good neuroprotective activity against N-methyl-ᴅ-aspartate (NMDA)-induced excitotoxicity in PC12 cells.

Background Fructus Rose roxburghii is a popular edible fruit with high nutritional and medicinal value, which was effective on anti-alcohol and liver-protection in southwest China.Purpose The aim of this study was to determine main chemical composition of the extract enriched in triterpenoids from Fructus R. roxburghii (TFRr) using UPLC-MS/MS and to investigate the hepatoprotective effects and molecular mechanisms of TFRr in mice with alcohol-induced liver injury.Methods TFRr were isolated from 75% ethanol extract of Fructus R. roxburghii and chemical constituents of TFRr were analyzed using UPLC-MS/MS. Male Kun-Ming mice were randomly divided into two experimental groups (TFRr groups (50 mg/kg) and TFRr groups (100 mg/kg)) and two control groups (normal control group and 53% ethanol group). Liver injury in mice was induced by oral administration with Lieber-DeCarli liquid diet mixing with 53% ethanol. After 10 days of treatment, the mice were weighed and treated with inhaling diethyl ether to anesthetize, then, the blood and liver tissue samples were gathered for molecular analysis and histological examination. The alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) in mice serum and the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, glutathione peroxidase (GSH) activity and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in mice liver were detected by Elisa kits. Western blot analysis was carried out to detect the protein expression levels of nuclear factor-erythroid-related factor-2 (Nrf2), heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), glutamate-cysteine ligase catalytic subunit (GCLC), glutamate-cysteine ligase regulatory subunit (GCLM), SOD1, glutathione S-transferase (GST) and Keap1 in liver tissues.Results Five triterpenoids (kaji-ichigoside F1, rosamultin, tormentic acid, roxburic acid, and pomonic acid) from TFRr extract were identified. TFRr treatment diminished the effects of LPS on the serum levels of AST and ALT in mice as well as MDA, SOD and GSH in liver. In addition, the protein expression levels of Nrf2 target genes, consisting of HO-1, SOD1, GST, GCLM, and GCLC were significantly upregulated by TFRr suggesting TFRr significantly attenuates the alcohol-induced liver injury by Keap1-Nrf2 signaling pathway.Conclusions These results show TFRr has the profoundly protective roles against ethanol-induced liver injury in mice models via Nrf2-Keap1 signaling pathway. Our results suggested that it is rationale to explore the application of extract enriched with active triterpenoids from Fructus Rosa roxburghii in the development of liver protectants.

The separation of graphite from cathode active materials containing Co, Ni, and Mn, and the metals Cu and Al by flotation was tested and evaluated with a black mass sample of crushed spent Li-ion batteries. The metals, Cu and Al, were mostly (>90%) concentrated by sieving into an oversize fraction (+0.25 mm). Graphite and the cathode active materials in the oversize fraction (+0.25 mm) were effectively separated from the metals, Cu and Al, by flotation. Pre-treatment by roasting at a temperature of 350–450 °C improved the flotation efficiency of graphite from the cathode active materials for the undersize fraction (−0.25 mm).

MicroRNAs (miRNAs), a class of small non-coding RNAs, can induce mRNA degradation or repress translation by binding to the 3′-untranslated region (UTR) of its target mRNA. Recently, some specific miRNAs, e.g. miR-93, have been found to be involved in pathological processes by targeting some oncogenes or tumor suppressors in glioma. However, the regulatory mechanism of miR-93 in the biological behaviors and chemoresistance of glioma cells remains unclear. In the present study, in situ hybridization and real-time RT-PCR data indicated that miR-93 was significantly upregulated in glioma patients (n=43) compared with normal brain tissues (n=8). Moreover, the upregulated miR-93 level was significantly associated with the advanced malignancy. We also found that upregulation of miR-93 promoted the proliferation, migration and invasion of glioma cells, and that miR-93 was involved in the regulation of cell cycle progression by mediating the protein levels of P21, P27, P53 and Cyclin D1. P21 was further identified as a direct target of miR-93. Knockdown of P21 attenuated the suppressive effects of miR-93 inhibition on cell cycle progression and colony formation. In addition, inhibition of miR-93 enhanced the chemosensitization of glioma cells to temozolomide (TMZ). Based on these above data, our study demonstrates that miR-93, upregulated in glioma, promotes the proliferation, cell cycle progression, migration and invasion of human glioma cells and suppresses their chemosensitivity to TMZ. Therefore, miR-93 may become a promising diagnostic marker and therapeutic target for glioma.

A facile hot injection approach to synthesize high-quality non-stoichiometric ZnxAgyInS1.5+x+0.5y nanocrystals (NCs) in the size range of 2.8−3.1 nm was presented. The fluorescence spectra had single band gap features, and indicated the formation of alloy states rather than simple composite structures. The chemical compositions, photoluminescence (PL) emission wavelengths, and quantum yields of ZnxAgyInS1.5+x+0.5y nanocrystals were significantly influenced by the concentration of an organic capping agent. The appropriate proportion of 1-dodecanthiol in the precursor prevented the precipitation, increased the fluorescence quantum yield, and improved their optical properties. The proper ratio of capping agent allowed Zn, Ag, and In to form a better crystallinity and compositional homogeneity of ZnxAgyInS1.5+x+0.5y nanocrystals. The photoluminescence was tunable from blue to red in the range of 450−700 nm as the Ag content changed independently. The PL and absorption spectra of ZnxAgyInS1.5+x+0.5y nanocrystals showed a significant blue shift with the decrease of Ag content in the precursor. As there were no obvious differences on the average particle sizes of ZnxAgyInS1.5+x+0.5y samples, these results fully revealed the composition-dependent photoluminescence properties of ZnxAgyInS1.5+x+0.5y nanocrystals. The relative quantum yield reached 35%. The fluorescence lifetimes (τ1=115−148 ns and τ2=455−483 ns) were analogous to those of AgInS2 and (AgIn)xZn2(1−x)S2.

Molecular orbital tomography, also termed photoemission tomography, which considers the final state as a simple plane wave, has been very successful in describing the photoemisson distribution of large adsorbates on noble metal surfaces. Here, following a suggestion by Bradshaw and Woodruff (2015 New J. Phys. 17 013033), we consider a small and strongly-interacting system, benzene adsorbed on palladium (110), to consider the extent of the problems that can arise with the final state simplification. Our angle-resolved photoemission experiments, supported by density functional theory calculations, substantiate and refine the previously determined adsorption geometry and reveal an energetic splitting of the frontier π -orbital due to a symmetry breaking which has remained unnoticed before. We find that, despite the small size of benzene and the comparably strong interaction with palladium, the overall appearance of the photoemission angular distributions can basically be understood within a plane wave final state approximation and yields a deeper understanding of the electronic structure of the interface. There are, however, noticeable deviations between measured and simulated angular patterns which we ascribe to molecule-substrate interactions and effects beyond a plane-wave final state description.

Bamboo has deep cultural and economic roots in China, the country with the largest bamboo resources in the world. Over the last three decades bamboo has evolved from a supply of raw material for basic goods into the material base of an increasingly diversified array of products and, more recently, into a potentially important source of cultural and environmental services. Based on a general literature review and the lessons learned from detailed case studies in different regions of China, we explored the changing roles of bamboo, and its effects on local economies and farmers' livelihood strategies. As the country develops and new economic activities continue to appear, bamboo production has shifted from a superior income-generating opportunity that largely benefited the better-off to a less attractive option left for those who have no other choice. The nature of the work has also changed, from families working directly on their bamboo plots to an emphasis on hired labor, with prosperous bamboo owners devoting most of their time to more lucrative activities. A similar process can be observed in bamboo processing in counties where previous industrial structures hinged around raw material harvests, but which have now entered into other secondary and tertiary industry activities. At the same time, bamboo has attracted new opportunities as a source of cultural, aesthetic, and leisure-related activities, as well as some potentially important climatic, watershed, and biodiversity functions. We analyze the complementarity between goods and services provided by bamboo and discuss some research issues and future trends that may help in overcoming these conflicts.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a common neurological disease with recognition ability loss symptoms and a major contributor to dementia cases worldwide. Gastrodia elata Bl. (GE), a food of medicine–food homology, has been reported to have a mitigating effect on memory and learning ability decline. However, the effect of GE fermented by Lactobacillus plantarum, Acetobacter pasteurianus, and Saccharomyces (FGE) on alleviating cognitive deficits in AD was not studied. Mice were randomly divided into six groups, control, model, donepezil, low, medium, and high doses of FGE, and D‑Galactose/Aluminum chloride (D‑Gal/AlCl3) was used to establish an AD‑like mouse model. The results indicated that FGE could improve the production of neurotransmitters and relieve oxidative stress damage in AD‑like mice, which was evidenced by the declined levels of amyloid‑β (Aβ), Tau, P‑Tau, acetylcholinesterase (AchE), and malondialdehyde (MDA), and increased acetylcholine (Ach), choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels in brain tissue. Notably, FGE could enhance the richness of the gut microbiota, especially for beneficial bacteria such as Lachnospira and Lactobacillus. Non‑target metabolomics results indicated that FGE could affect neurotransmitter levels by regulating amino acid metabolic pathways to improve AD symptoms. The FGE possessed an ameliorative effect on AD by regulating neurotransmitters, oxidative stress levels, and gut microbiota and could be considered a good candidate for ameliorating AD. In conventional thin materials, the diffraction limit of light constrains the number of waveguide modes that can exist at a given frequency. However, layered van der Waals (vdW) materials, such as hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), can surpass this limitation due to their dielectric anisotropy, exhibiting positive permittivity along one optic axis and negativity along the other. This enables the propagation of hyperbolic rays within the material bulk and an unlimited number of subdiffractional modes characterized by hyperbolic dispersion. By employing time-domain near-field interferometry to analyze ultrafast hyperbolic ray pulses in thin hBN, we showed that their zigzag reflection trajectories bound within the hBN layer create an illusion of backward-moving and leaping behavior of pulse fringes. These rays result from the coherent beating of hyperbolic waveguide modes but could be mistakenly interpreted as negative group velocities and backward energy flow. Moreover, the zigzag reflections produce nanoscale (60 nm) and ultrafast (40 fs) spatiotemporal optical vortices along the trajectory, presenting opportunities to chiral spatiotemporal control of light-matter interactions. Supported by experimental evidence, our simulations highlight the potential of hyperbolic ray reflections for molecular vibrational absorption nanospectroscopy.
