1. Socioeconomic Status and Risk-Taking Behavior Among Chinese Adolescents: The Mediating Role of Psychological Capital and Self-Control

Abstract

Risk-taking behavior is particularly widespread during adolescence, and negatively impacts the healthy growth and social adaptation of adolescents. Utilizing problem-behavior theory (PBT) and the family stress model (FSM), the current study examined the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and adolescents’ risk-taking behavior, as well as the mediating role of psychological capital and self-control. A total of 1,156 Chinese adolescent students (Mage = 15.51, 48% boys) completed a series of questionnaires anonymously. The results showed that: (1) Socioeconomic status was negatively correlated with adolescents’ risk-taking behavior; (2) Both psychological capital and self-control mediated the relationship between SES and adolescents’ risk-taking behavior independently; and (3) Psychological capital and self-control also mediated the relationship between SES and the risk-taking behavior of adolescents sequentially. This study reveals the internal mechanism of risk-taking behavior during adolescence and provides theoretical support and empirical evidence for preventing and reducing such behavior in this age group.

2. Debromination of Hexabromocyclododecane by Anaerobic Consortium and Characterization of Functional Bacteria

Abstract

A microbial consortium which can efficiently remove hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) under anaerobic condition have been successfully enriched over 300 days. Under the optimal conditions, the degradation efficiency was 92.4% removal after treatment of 12 days with original addition of 500 μg/L HBCD, yielding 321.7 μg/L bromide in total as well. A typical debromination product, dibromocyclododecadiene (DBCD), was detected during the degradation process. The debromination profiles of three main HBCD diastereomers fitted well with first-order model (R2: 0.96–0.99), with the rate constants ranging from 1.3 × 10-1 to 1.9 × 10-1. The microbial community analysis by high throughput sequencing showed that the composition of the microbial communities varied dynamically with time and the population of functional bacteria increase sharply after enrichment. The population of Bacteroidetes increased from 5 to 47%. And some bacteria which are relatively minority in population at the beginning, such as Azospira oryzae (OTU2), Microbacterium (OTU13), and Achromobacter insolitus (OTU39) increased more than 22 times after enrichment (from 0.5 to 13%, 12%, and 11%, respectively). However, no reported dehalogenating bacteria were found after enrichment. And the contribution for debromination may come from new dehalogenating bacteria. All in all, the present study provided in-depth information on anaerobic microbial communities for HBCD removal by debromination.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The complex characteristics and unclear biological fate of biomacromolecules (BMM), including colloidal and soluble microbial products (SMP), extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and membrane surface foulants (MSF), are crucial factors that limit our understanding of membrane fouling in membrane bioreactors (MBRs). FINDINGS: In this study, the microbial transformation of BMM was investigated in a lab-scale MBR by well-controlled bioassay tests. The results of experimental measurements and mathematical modeling show that SMP, EPS, and MSF had different biodegradation behaviors and kinetic models. Based on the multi-exponential G models, SMP were mainly composed of slowly biodegradable polysaccharides (PS), proteins (PN), and non-biodegradable humic substances (HS). In contrast, EPS contained a large number of readily biodegradable PN, slowly biodegradable PS and HS. MSF were dominated by slowly biodegradable PS, which had a degradation rate constant similar to that of SMP-PS, while degradation behaviors of MSF-PN and MSF-HS were much more similar to those of EPS-PN and EPS-HS, respectively. Abstract

Aerobic and anaerobic continuous stirred-tank reactor (CSTR), up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) were set up and inoculated with newly isolated Candida tropicalis. Reactors were operated at high concentrations of chemical oxygen demand (COD) (8000 mg/L), the modified UASB expressed better COD removal rate simultaneously removal of nitrogen and phosphate than other two reactors. Notably, under both aerobic or anaerobic conditions, large amounts of organic acids and alcohol were generated. Transcriptomic analysis showed that carbon metabolism under anaerobic conditions shared the same pathway with aerobic conditions by regulating and inhibiting some functional genes. Experiments utilizing different carbon sources proved that our strain has excellent performances in utilizing organic materials, which were verified by transcriptomic analysis. Finally, the strain was applied to treat four types of sugar-containing wastewaters. Among them, our strain exerts the best removal capability of COD (90%), nitrogen (89%), and phosphate (82%) for brewery wastewater.

Abstract

In the pursuit of novel approaches to address chronic heart failure and enhance cardiovascular nursing care, environmentally sustainable nanomaterials have taken center stage. Recent progress in regenerative medicine has opened doors for the use of biocompatible biomaterials that provide mechanical support to damaged heart tissue and facilitate electrical signaling. This study was dedicated to developing advanced electroconductive nanofibers by incorporating eco-friendly Avena sativa L. extract-mediated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) into polyaniline to create an intricate cardiac patch. The AuNPs were synthesized through an environmentally friendly chemical process aided by ultrasonic conditions. Comprehensive physicochemical analyses, such as UV–Vis spectroscopy, SEM, TEM, DPPH assay, and XRD, were carried out to characterize the AuNPs. These AuNPs were then blended with a polycaprolactone/gelatin polymeric solution and electrospun to fabricate cardiac patches, which underwent thorough evaluation using various techniques. The resulting cardiac patch demonstrated excellent hemocompatibility, antioxidant properties, and cytocompatibility, offering a promising therapeutic approach for myocardial infarctions and the advancement of cardiovascular nursing care.

Abstract

A new Candida tropicalis that simultaneously remove nitrogen and phosphorus, and degrade organic matters was isolated. Three continuous stirred tank reactors inoculated with C. tropicalis, activated sludge, and their co-existing system in aerobic condition were operated for 150 days. Results demonstrated that the inoculation of C. tropicalis in the co-existing system remarkably improved the carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus removal efficiencies. The co-existing system had increased carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus removal efficiencies (92%, 73%, and 63%, respectively); decreased biomass (reduced from 1200 mg/L to 500 mg/L); and C. tropicalis as the dominant strain. The relative abundance of traditional nitrogen- and phosphorus-removing microorganisms, such as Mycobacterium, Flavonifactor, and Devsia, increased in the co-existing system. Metagenomic analysis showed that the presence of the PCYT2, EPT1, and phnPP genes and more complexed metabolism pathways in the co-existing system might be responsible for the more activated metabolism process.

Abstract

This research investigated the biodegradation kinetics, pathways and ecological risk of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) by a novel bacterium Citrobacter sp. Y3. Results showed the biodegradation followed a first-order model. The specific degradation rate constant of HBCD were obviously higher in batch experiments with combined carbon sources (k: 0.156–0.290 d−1) than those using HBCD as the sole carbon source (k: 0.055 d−1). Correspondingly, the degradation half-life became much shorter (T1/2: 2.39–4.44 d vs T1/2: 13.7 d). HBCD could be degraded through dehydrobromination and dehalohydroxylation, of which six possible degradation products were detected. To evaluate the ecological risk of HBCD biodegradation products, acute toxicity tests were assessed for the first time. The acute toxicity decreased slowly during treatment for 3–5 d and then decreased sharply. In general, treatment by Strain Y3 is not only a biodegradation process but also a detoxification process, thus it shows potential for bioremediation of HBCD contaminated sites.

Abstract

Sewage sludge-derived biochar (SBC) could remove organic contaminants in environment and reuse the sludge effectively. In this study, urea-doped SBC (NSBC) was prepared, characterized, and applied as heterogeneous catalytics to peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation. Sulfadiazine (SD), a widely used antibiotic, was used as a model pollutant to evaluate the efficiency and mechanism of this system. The degradation rate of SD increased to 100% after 4 h when 1 g/L of NSBC was added to the system with a SD concentration of 20 mg/L. In this study, it was confirmed that there were two important pathways in the degradation of SD by NSBC/PDS system: the free radical on the surface of NSBC and the nonradical (1O2) in the solution. The doping of N atoms makes neighboring C atoms positively charged, thereby making the direct transfer of electrons with S2O82− and the generation of 1O2 via nonradical pathway easy. In addition, the C O functional group formed during the pyrolysis of NSBC can produce 1O2 in a similar way. A total of 22 SD degradation products were identified, and 4 possible pathways were proposed. This study provide supplement for the degradation mechanism of organic compounds by carbon-based materials.

Abstract

Anaerobic sewage sludge capable of rapidly degrading tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) was successfully acclimated in an anaerobic reactor over 280 days. During the period from 0 to 280 days, the TBBPA degradation rate (DR), utilization of glucose, and VSS were monitored continuously. After 280 days of acclimation, the TBBPA DR of active sludge reached 96.0% after 20 days of treatment in batch experiments. Based on scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) determinations, the diversity of the microorganisms after 0 and 280 days in the acclimated anaerobic sewage sludge was compared. Furthermore, eleven metabolites, including 2-bromophenol, 3-bromophenol, 2,4-dibromophenol, 2,6-dibromophenol, tribromophenol and bisphenol A, were identified by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). Moreover, the six primary intermediary metabolites were also well-degraded by the acclimated anaerobic sewage sludge to varying degrees. Among the six target metabolites, tribromophenol was the most preferred substrate for biodegradation via debromination. These metabolites degraded more rapidly than monobromide and bisphenol A. The biodegradation data of the intermediary metabolites exhibited a good fit to a pseudo-first-order model. Finally, based on the metabolites, metabolic pathways were proposed. In conclusion, the acclimated microbial consortia degraded TBBPA and its metabolites well under anaerobic conditions.

Abstract

This study provides a novel technology for the degradation of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) via an interaction of Fe redox and a shift of functional microbial community. TBBPA was degraded by integration of synthesized Fe-Ni bimetallic particles and enriched microbial consortium within an aqueous system. This cooperative integration yielded the best TBBPA-degrading capacity (100% removal after treatment for 2 h) and highest TOC-removing efficiency (94.5% removal after treatment for 96 h), as well as the lowest toxicity to Vibrio fischeri (almost 0% growth inhibition during reaction). The synergistic mechanism of integrated system was clarified based on systematical analyses of the degradation processes as well as the shifts in microbial community. Owing to the microbial metabolism and the Fenton-like process of leaked Fe 2+ , Fe 3+ and Ni 2+ from Fe-Ni bimetallic catalyst, reactive oxidative species (ROS), including superoxide ( O 2 − ), hydroxyl radicals ( OH) and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) were produced and evaluated by multiple techniques. Moreover, the quenching experiments indicated that OH was the major ROS leading to TBBPA degradation, rather than H 2 O 2 or O 2 − . Based on the analysis of the 12 detected intermediates, three parallel pathways were proposed. It was clearly revealed that reductive and oxidative debromination, hydroxylation, and β-scission simultaneously occurred in the integrated system. Fe non-randomly accelerated the enrichment of TBBPA-degrading microbes (e.g. Pseudomonas sp. and Citrobacter sp., etc.). Above all, this novel technology has great promise for field-applications for remediation of TBBPA-contaminated field.

Abstract

A modified anaerobic/aerobic (A/O) bioreactor that simultaneously removed carbon, nitrogen ( NH4+-N) and phosphorus ( PO43−-P) was continuously run and debugged. After 34 days of reactor operation, the removal efficiencies of NH4+-N, carbon (glucose) and PO43−-P reached 99.26, 95.81 and 94.35%, respectively. Notably, the ammonium removal with no accumulation of nitrite ( NO2−-N) and nitrate ( NO3−-N) in the anaerobic part supported the occurrence of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification and no PO43−-P was released during the removal process of phosphorus. Moreover, the principal component analysis and response surface methodology based on the Box–Behnken design were applied to determine the optimal removal conditions for volatile suspended solids (VSS) (335 mg/L), NH4+-N (60 mg/L), glucose (900 mg/L) and pH (7). Abstract

Organo-montmorillonite supported zero-valent iron nanoparticles (Fe 0 /OMt) with well-dispersion and higher specific surface area were synthesized for the degradation of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and bisphenol A (BPA) in aqueous solution. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Energy-Dispersive X-ray elemental mapping, and X-ray photoelectron microscopy (XPS) were used to characterize the composition and microstructures of Fe 0 /OMt. Interestingly, nanoscale zero-valent iron (Fe 0 ) core with a uniform iron oxide shell are formed and well dispersed on the organo-montmorillonite supports. After systematical optimization of treatment conditions, Fe 0 /OMt (0.1 g/L) with sparging O 3 (concentration of 4 mg/L) demonstrated excellent degradation efficiency for TBBPA and BPA (98.6% and 94.7%, respectively) with the initial concentration of 10 mg/L. Notably, in the aforementioned oxic conditions, bromide ions, ferrous ion, and hydroxyl radicals were detected during the progressive degradation of the TBBPA and BPA, suggesting that TBBPA was debrominated as the primary step then completely mineralized by oxidative process. Finally, combined with the analysis of degradation products identified by LC–MS, pathways of TBBPA and BPA over Fe 0 /OMt were proposed. These results revealed that a Fe 0 /OMt based on advanced oxidation technology is of great potential for remediating TBBPA and BPA in aqueous environment.

Abstract

Triclosan (TCS) is applied in a wide range of pharmaceutical and personal care products to prevent or reduce bacterial growth. In this study, the effects of TCS on phosphate removal and bacterial community shifts of activated sludge, especially on functional bacteria variation, were investigated. Compared with the control group (R-control), the treatment group (R-TCS) with 100 μg/L TCS inhibited the microbial growth. In addition, the phosphorus removal efficiency of PO43−-P and total phosphorus removal rates declined by 15.99% and 7.81%, respectively. Proteobacteria gradually dominated the microorganisms. The growths of Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes were inhibited when 150 μg/L of TCS was added. Moreover, the differences in the microbial community structures of the R-control and R-TCS groups gradually expanded, no obvious difference was observed in the final stage, and the interrelationships of microbes in the latter weakened. The long-term addition of TCS impairs the growth of polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs).

Abstract

A newly designed pilot-scale system was developed to enrich denitrifying phosphate-accumulating organisms (DNPAOs) for nitrogen and phosphorus nutrient removal synchronously. A strain of DNPAOs was isolated and its biochemical characteristics and metabolic mechanisms of this bacterial strain were analyzed. The results showed that compared with previously reported system, this newly designed system has higher removal rates of nutrients. Removal efficiencies of NH3-N, TN, TP, and COD in actual wastewater were 82.64%, 79.62%, 87.22%, and 90.41%, respectively. Metabolic activity of DNPAOs after anoxic stage in this study even reached 94.64%. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a strain of non-fermentative DNPAOs with strong nitrogen and phosphorus removal abilities. Study on the metabolic mechanisms suggested that intracellular PHB of P. aeruginosa plays dual roles, supplying energy for phosphorus accumulation and serving as a major carbon source for denitrification.

Abstract

Removal of tetrabromobisphenol-A (TBBPA) from wastewater is of significance to protect the aquatic life. The present study reports the facile preparation of polyoxometalate-modified metal-organic framework (MOFs) materials for TBBPA removal from water. The polyoxometalate-modified MOFs exhibited significantly higher affinity towards TBBPA than the control MOFs. The experimental data were fitted with the Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich models. The TBBPA adsorption onto modified MOFs fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The equilibrium adsorption isotherms showed that the adsorption of TBBPA can be fitted by the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacity of adsorbent composites reached 3.65 mg/g, with 95 % removal of TBBPA. The thermodynamic parameters indicated that adsorption was spontaneous. A blue shift of phosphorus peaks obtained from XPS spectra implied the formation of intrinsic chemical bonding between TBBPA and MOFs composites. Moreover, response surface methodology was employed to characterize the TBBPA adsorption in the co-existence of different factors. BPA had strong competition for TBBPA adsorption in a wide range of pH, but not at the middle level of Ca2+ concentration. Polyoxometalate-modified MOFs can easily be recycled using a simple organic solvent washing. This study provides a novel strategy for developing cost effective adsorbents to remove TBBPA from contaminated water.

In this study, remediation of tetrabromobisphenol-A (TBBPA) from aqueous solution by sorption using transition metals-modified inorganic–organic montmorillonite (IOMt) was demonstrated. The adsorbents were prepared in two steps: (1) intercalation of surfactants into Al13-pillared montmorillonite for synthesizing two types of IOMt; (2) incorporation of transition metals (Cu2+, Ni2+, or Co2+) onto those IOMts. Firstly, these materials were characterized by XRD, FTIR, TGA, SEM-EDS, and BET analyses. Then, experiments were conducted on the sorption isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamics of TBBPA. Abstract

In this study, two pure strains, named HBCD-1 and HBCD-2, were isolated from a continuous anaerobic reactor over 300-days acclimation, which processed high capability of biodegrading Hexabromocyclododecane. Both of the two strains degraded HBCD diastereomers in different extents, especially strain HBCD-1, which interestingly degraded α-HBCD effectively. All of the degrading results were well fitted with the first-order kinetics model. By morphological observation and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, the strain HBCD-1 showed highest similarity with Achromobacter sp. Under the optimal culturing conditions of 30°C, pH 7 and the initial HBCD concentration of 500μg/L, the biodegradation rate of HBCD-1 reached 90% after 8days treatment. Moreover, during the biodegradation process by HBCD-1 strain, the concentration of bromide ion was lower than the theoretical value. Finally, 4 metabolites were determined by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), as well as a biodegradation pathway was proposed.

Abstract

Cu and Fe based metal-organic frameworks (Cu-BTC and Fe-BTC) were synthesized via a simple solvothermal method and innovatively utilized to remove a typical nonionic brominated flame retardant, hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), from aquatic environment. Results show that over 80% of HBCD was removed by Cu-BTC within 5h, which is 1.3 times higher than removal by Fe-BTC. Thermodynamic analysis confirms spontaneous adsorption of HBCD onto the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Furthermore, the Gibbs free energy of Cu-BTC (-9.11kJ/mol) is more negative than that of Fe-BTC (-5.04kJ/mol). Both adsorption isotherms of HBCD onto Cu-BTC and Fe-BTC followed the Langmuir model, indicating a typical monomolecular-layer adsorption mechanism. In addition, the water stability test of these MOFs shows that the collapse of the Cu-BTC crystal structure is significantly hindered in the aquatic environment due to adsorption of the hydrophobic HBCD. The proposed adsorption mechanism includes van der Waals and hydrophobic interactions. These findings demonstrate that Cu/Fe-BTC are promising adsorbents for the removal of hydrophobic organic pollutants from aquatic environments, and may further improve the understanding of MOF materials for environmental applications.

Three strains capable of rapidly degrading TBBPA by co-metabolism and utilizing formate as the carbon source, named as J-F-01, J-F-02, and J-F-03, respectively, were isolated from enrichment cultures, which have been treated with 0.5 mg/L TBBPA for 240 d. Based on morphology and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, both J-F-01 and J-F-02 were determined to Pseudomonas sp., while J-F-03 was identified as Streptococcus sp. A shorter half-life (6.1 d) of TBBPA was observed in pure culture of J-F-03 when compared with J-F-01 (22.5 d) and J-F-02 (13.6 d). Surprisingly, the degradation of TBBPA was significantly enhanced by the mixed culture of J-F-02 and J-F-03. The optimal degradation conditions for the mixed cultures were determined. Under the optimal conditions, TBBPA (0.5 mg/L) was completely metabolized by the mixed culture within ten days. Moreover, bromide and the metabolisms were detected, and a possible metabolic pathway was deduced from the detection of metabolite production patterns.

32. Simultaneous alkali supplementation and fouling mitigation in membrane bioreactors by on-line NaOH backwashing

Abstract

In this study, we took advantage of the conventionally used physical backwashing and chemical cleaning methods to develop an on-line maintenance cleaning method using the NaOH solution (0.01 mol/L, pH around 12) as the backwashing agent in a membrane bioreactor (MBR) operated at two imposed fluxes (6.5 and 13 L/(m 2 ·h) (LMH)). The results indicate that NaOH backwashing had little adverse effect on biological nutrient removal, and the pH in the MBR reactor remained at stable and acceptable levels (6.6–7.8) because of the alkali consumption by the nitrification process and the buffering role of the mixed liquor. Importantly, the NaOH backwashing significantly slowed the increased rates of total fouling (50% and 69% for 6.5 and 13 LMH, respectively) and irreversible fouling (40% and 50% for 6.5 and 13 LMH, respectively) compared with the pure water backwashing. Off-line backwashing tests indicate that NaOH backwashing enhanced the detachment of biopolymers from the surface of fouled membranes due to the co-occurrence of hydraulic actions and chemical alterations. The characterizations by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicate that both backwashing methods increased the size of membrane pores. Nevertheless, the Fourier transform-infrared spectrometry (FTIR) of membranes indicates that the long-term exposure to the NaOH solution did not change the chemical structure of membranes. This study suggests that on-line NaOH backwashing could not only maintain membrane permeability but also simultaneously supply alkali to bioreactors to ultimately facilitate the operation of MBRs.

Abstract

Abstract Main goal of the JUNO experiment is to determine the neutrino mass ordering using a 20 kt liquid-scintillator detector. Its key feature is an excellent energy resolution of at least 3% at 1 MeV, for which its instruments need to meet a certain quality and thus have to be fully characterized. More than 20,000 20-inch PMTs have been received and assessed by JUNO after a detailed testing program which began in 2017 and elapsed for about four years. Based on this mass characterization and a set of specific requirements, a good quality of all accepted PMTs could be ascertained. This paper presents the performed testing procedure with the designed testing systems as well as the statistical characteristics of all 20-inch PMTs intended to be used in the JUNO experiment, covering more than fifteen performance parameters including the photocathode uniformity. This constitutes the largest sample of 20-inch PMTs ever produced and studied in detail to date, i.e. 15,000 of the newly developed 20-inch MCP-PMTs from Northern Night Vision Technology Co. (NNVT) and 5000 of dynode PMTs from Hamamatsu Photonics K. K.(HPK).

Comparing the bioprocesses with and without denitrification, we found that the specific yield coefficients of polysaccharides (PS) and proteins (PN) in SMP existing denitrification were significantly lower than those without denitrification. In addition, the freshly produced PS and PN from extracelluar polymeric substances (EPS) could be biodegraded and utilized by denitrifers. Abstract

To investigate the characteristics and metabolic mechanism of short-cut denitrifying phosphorus-removing bacteria (SDPB) that are capable of enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) using nitrite as an electron acceptor, an aerobic/anoxic sequencing batch reactor was operated under three phases. An SDPB-strain YC was screened after the sludge enrichment and was identified by morphological, physiological, biochemical properties and 16S rDNA gene sequence analysis. Denitrifying phosphorus-removing experiments were conducted to study anaerobic and anoxic metabolic mechanisms by analyzing the changes of chemical oxygen demand (COD), phosphate, nitrite, poly-β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB), and glycogen. The results show that strain YC is a non-fermentative SDPB similar to Paracoccus denitrificans . As a kind of non-fermentative bacteria, the energy of strain YC was mainly generated from phosphorus release (96.2%) under anaerobic conditions with 0.32 mg P per mg synthesized PHB. Under anoxic conditions, strain YC accumulated 0.45 mg P per mg degraded PHB, which produced most of energy for phosphate accumulation (91.3%) and a little for glycogen synthesis (8.7%). This metabolic mechanism of strain YC is different from that of traditional phosphorus-accumulating organisms (PAOs). It is also found that PHB, a kind of intracellular polymer, plays a very important role in denitrifying and accumulating phosphorus by supplying sufficient energy for phosphorous accumulation and carbon sources for denitrification. Therefore, monitoring ΔP/ΔPHB and Δ-NO − 2 -N/ΔPHB is more necessary than monitoring ΔP/ΔCOD, ΔNO − 2 -N/ΔCOD, or ΔP/ΔNO − 2 -N.

Abstract

The physics potential of detecting ^8 B solar neutrinos will be exploited at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), in a model-independent manner by using three distinct channels of the charged current (CC), neutral current (NC), and elastic scattering (ES) interactions. Due to the largest-ever mass of ^13 C nuclei in the liquid scintillator detectors and the expected low background level, ^8 B solar neutrinos are observable in the CC and NC interactions on ^13 C for the first time. By virtue of optimized event selections and muon veto strategies, backgrounds from the accidental coincidence, muon-induced isotopes, and external backgrounds can be greatly suppressed. Excellent signal-to-background ratios can be achieved in the CC, NC, and ES channels to guarantee the observation of the ^8 B solar neutrinos. From the sensitivity studies performed in this work, we show that JUNO, with 10 yr of data, can reach the 1 σ precision levels of 5%, 8%, and 20% for the ^8 B neutrino flux, ${\sin }^{2}{\theta }_{12}$ , and ${\rm{\Delta }}{m}_{21}^{2}$ , respectively. Probing the details of both solar physics and neutrino physics would be unique and helpful. In addition, when combined with the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory measurement, the world's best precision of 3% is expected for the measurement of the ^8 B neutrino flux.

Abstract

Ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) play an important role in the oxidation of ammonia. However, the participation of AOA in the composting process has not been established. The addition of AOA to a compost mix was able to speed up both the onset of the hyperthermic phase and the composting time. The composition of the microflora and the relative abundance were determined by using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis and quantitative real-time PCR, based on the presence of the archaeal amoA genes. The amplicon profiles allowed some of the major AOA species present in the final compost to be identified, and their relative abundance to be estimated from their amplification intensity. The lower pH during the lower temperature phase of compost served to enhance the nitrogen content of the final compost. The addition of AOA resulted in the expanding diversity of microflora species than that of the natural colonization.

Abstract

Microorganisms able to rapidly degrade tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) were domesticated in an anaerobic reactor and added to gradually increased concentrations of TBBPA. After 240 days of domestication, the degradation rate reached 96.0% in cultivated batch experiments lasting 20 days. The optimum cultivating temperature and pH were 30 °C and 7.0. The bacterial community’s composition and diversity in the reactor was studied by comparative analysis with 16S ribosomal DNA clone libraries. Amplified rDNA restriction analysis of 200 clones from the library indicate that the rDNA richness was high (Coverage C 99.5%) and that evenness was not high (Shannon–Weaver index 2.42). Phylogenetic analysis of 63 bacterial sequences from the reactor libraries demonstrated the presence of Betaproteobacteria (33.1%), Gammaproteobacteria (18.7%), Bacteroidetes (13.9%), Firmicutes (11.4%), Chloroflexi (3.6%), Actinobacteria (0.6%), the candidate division TM7 (4.2%) and other unknown, uncultured bacterial groups (14.5%). Comamonas, Achromobacter, Pseudomonas and Flavobacterium were the dominant types.

Abstract

The feasibility of enhanced biological nutrient removal by a new process called nearly plug-flow membrane bioreactor (NPFMBR) is studied. Results of long-term observations showed that average removal degrees of (1) chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) reached 95%, 85%, and 89%, respectively, at the steady operation period. Process success was further corroborated by batch experiments. Data of specific oxygen uptake rates demonstrated the abundance and/or high activities of ammonium oxidation bacteria and nitrite oxidation bacteria in the sludge. Observed specific rates of nitrification, denitrification, phosphorous release/uptake of the sludge were higher than those reported in previous research. Because of the unique flow pattern of sludge and alternant aerobic–anoxic operating conditions in the bioreactor, mass transfer and biotransformation of nutrients were expected to be improved. Abstract

The objective of this study was to highlight the significance of microorganism growth on the production of biomacromolecules (BMM) in a membrane bioreactor (MBR). During the MBR operation, both polysaccharides and proteins in the sludge supernatant were found to increase steadily in exponential growth phase (EGP) due to higher organic loading rates and microbial primary metabolism. Subsequently, both increased continuously and then decreased sharply in the following deceleration growth phase (DGP). Finally, the BMM maintained a low and steady level as the sludge reached stationary growth phase (SGP). The results of batch experiments showed that the sludge under DGP was prone to produce much more BMM than that under SGP as a result of a nutrients decrease and higher microbial secondary metabolism activities. Abstract

To evaluate the effects of operating nuclear power plants on the ecological environment in the surrounding sea areas, 4 nuclear power plants which had been operated along the coast of China, namely Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant, Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant, Ningde Nuclear Power Plant and Fuqing Nuclear Power Plant, were selected as research objects. The specific activity of main radionuclides in fish and surface sediments in the surrounding sea areas was determined from June to September of 2016 and from April to July of 2017 respectively, and the sources of surface sediments were analyzed. The results showed that the operation of nuclear power plant had not affected the radioactivity level of fish and surface sediments in surrounding sea areas, and the specific activity of 137Cs and 226Ra in fish was much lower than the detection limits of national food. Specific activity of 238U, 226Ra and 228Ra in surface sediments increased gradually with the decrease of latitude, and that of 137Cs decreased with time compared with the results of earlier literature. According to the average 226Ra/238U value of surface sediments, the sources of surface sediments in different areas were different, and the higher the correlation between 226Ra and 228Ra specific activity, the more single the source of surface sediments.

Abstract

Abstract We study damping signatures at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a medium-baseline reactor neutrino oscillation experiment. These damping signatures are motivated by various new physics models, including quantum decoherence, ν 3 decay, neutrino absorption, and wave packet decoherence. The phenomenological effects of these models can be characterized by exponential damping factors at the probability level. We assess how well JUNO can constrain these damping parameters and how to disentangle these different damping signatures at JUNO. Compared to current experimental limits, JUNO can significantly improve the limits on τ 3/m 3 in the ν 3 decay model, the width of the neutrino wave packet σ x , and the intrinsic relative dispersion of neutrino momentum σ rel.

Abstract

Abstract The OSIRIS detector is a subsystem of the liquid scintillator filling chain of the JUNO reactor neutrino experiment. Its purpose is to validate the radiopurity of the scintillator to assure that all components of the JUNO scintillator system work to specifications and only neutrino-grade scintillator is filled into the JUNO Central Detector. The aspired sensitivity level of $$10^{-16}\hbox { g/g}$$ 10 - 16 g/g of $$^{238}\hbox {U}$$ 238 U and $$^{232}\hbox {Th}$$ 232 Th requires a large ( $$\sim 20\,\hbox {m}^3$$ ∼ 20 m 3 ) detection volume and ultralow background levels. The present paper reports on the design and major components of the OSIRIS detector, the detector simulation as well as the measuring strategies foreseen and the sensitivity levels to U/Th that can be reached in this setup.

Abstract

Abstract JUNO is a massive liquid scintillator detector with a primary scientific goal of determining the neutrino mass ordering by studying the oscillated anti-neutrino flux coming from two nuclear power plants at 53 km distance. The expected signal anti-neutrino interaction rate is only 60 counts per day (cpd), therefore a careful control of the background sources due to radioactivity is critical. In particular, natural radioactivity present in all materials and in the environment represents a serious issue that could impair the sensitivity of the experiment if appropriate countermeasures were not foreseen. In this paper we discuss the background reduction strategies undertaken by the JUNO collaboration to reduce at minimum the impact of natural radioactivity. We describe our efforts for an optimized experimental design, a careful material screening and accurate detector production handling, and a constant control of the expected results through a meticulous Monte Carlo simulation program. We show that all these actions should allow us to keep the background count rate safely below the target value of 10 Hz (i.e. ∼1 cpd accidental background) in the default fiducial volume, above an energy threshold of 0.7 MeV.

Abstract

Abstract Atmospheric neutrinos are one of the most relevant natural neutrino sources that can be exploited to infer properties about cosmic rays and neutrino oscillations. The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) experiment, a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector with excellent energy resolution is currently under construction in China. JUNO will be able to detect several atmospheric neutrinos per day given the large volume. A study on the JUNO detection and reconstruction capabilities of atmospheric $$\nu _e$$ ν e and $$\nu _\mu $$ ν μ fluxes is presented in this paper. In this study, a sample of atmospheric neutrino Monte Carlo events has been generated, starting from theoretical models, and then processed by the detector simulation. The excellent timing resolution of the 3” PMT light detection system of JUNO detector and the much higher light yield for scintillation over Cherenkov allow to measure the time structure of the scintillation light with very high precision. Since $$\nu _e$$ ν e and $$\nu _\mu $$ ν μ interactions produce a slightly different light pattern, the different time evolution of light allows to discriminate the flavor of primary neutrinos. A probabilistic unfolding method has been used, in order to infer the primary neutrino energy spectrum from the detector experimental observables. The simulated spectrum has been reconstructed between 100 MeV and 10 GeV, showing a great potential of the detector in the atmospheric low energy region.

Abstract

Ecological corridors (ECs) are important management tools to protect biodiversity by linking fragile habitats, especially for highly mobile organisms. ECs in terrestrial landscapes work as passages on land or in water. However, the significance of ECs to migratory species in estuaries has not been well elucidated. Based on annual fishery investigation in the Yangtze estuary and their dominance index rank, three of the top five species, including Larimochthys polyactis, Coilia mystus, and Gobiidae, exhibited absolute dominance in spring during the past 5 years. The temporal and spatial density variance of C. mystus supported its short-distance migration pattern. Redundancy analysis and the MaxEnt model predicted optimum habitats for C. mystus. C. mystus larvae survival was significantly related to salinity, total nitrogen, pH, reactive silicate, dissolved oxygen, surface water temperature, and chlorophyll-a in May and to salinity, surface water temperature, permanganate index, suspended particles, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus in August. The MaxEnt model predicted a broader longitudinal distribution range from offshore to the upstream freshwater area but narrower latitudinal distribution in the southern branch in May than in August. Finally, we delineated migratory corridors connecting optimum habitats for C. mystus using the least-cost route method. Optimum habitats close to the coastlines in the south branch might play a significant role in maintaining population or community connectivity in the Yangtze estuary. Our findings provide a perspective and method to quantify and facilitate the harmonious development of socioeconomy and fishery biodiversity conservation.

Abstract

The addition of different carbon and nitrogen sources can promote tetrabromobisphenol A degradation to varying degrees under co-metabolism process. A kinetic model was developed to evaluate the degradation efficiency using different carbon and nitrogen sources. Sodium formate was found to be the best carbon source for tetrabromobisphenol A degradation. The degradation rate reached 96.2% with a half-life of 4.1 d. Nitrogen supplementation can also accelerate tetrabromobisphenol A degradation. Organic nitrogen is generally better than inorganic nitrogen. A response surface methodology based on the central composite design was applied to determine the optimum conditions. It showed that concentration of sodium formate, yeast extraction, tetrabromobisphenol A, and inoculum size of microorganism were important factors, and the interaction between either of two variables played different roles. Under the optimum conditions (sodium formate 11.5 mg/L, yeast extraction 2.5 mg/L, TBBPA 1.1 mg/L and inoculum size 3.4%), TBBPA degradation rate reached the maximum.

Abstract

The acceleration of the composting process and the improvement of compost quality have been explored by evaluating the efficacy of various additives, inoculating with specific microorganisms and the application of various biosurfactants. The magnesium-aluminum silicate attapulgite is a low-cost potential composting additive, but its effects on aerobic composting are unknown. This study investigated the effects of attapulgite application on compost production and quality during the aerobic composting of chicken manure. Addition of attapulgite significantly increased the temperature (p0.05) while it reduced compost total organic carbon (TOC) and seed germination indices (GIs) throughout the process. Its addition enhanced nitrate concentrations, promoted organic matter degradation, increased seed germination indices, and accelerated the composting process. Interestingly, attapulgite addition did not increase the population of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria. These results suggest that attapulgite is a good additive for the composting industry.We investigated the addition of two forms of attapulgite during aerobic composting of chicken manure to determine their effects under strict composting environmental parameter control. Our results provides primary evidence that attapulgite may have potential for application in the composting industry. All treatments showed no increase within the first 15 days. However, emissions increased for all treatments within 15-45 days, reaching approximately 6300, 2000, and 4000 mg/m2 from the control, artifactitious attapulgite, and raw attapulgite treatments, respectively.

Abstract

A bacterial strain able to rapidly degrade tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), JXS-2-02, was isolated from anaerobic sludge that had been successfully enrichment by adding TBBPA for 240 days. JXS-2-02 can use TBBPA as the sole carbon and energy source for growth in mineral salt medium. Based on morphology, biochemical characteristics and 16S rDNA sequence analysis, JXS-2-02 was identified as Comamonas sp.. Under the optimal conditions (pH 7.0, a temperature of 30 °C and an inoculum of 1% OD(600) = 0.6), more than 86% of the initial TBBPA (0.5 mg L(-1)) was degraded after 10d. A TBBPA biodegradation pathway was proposed on the basis of the metabolite production patterns and the identification of the metabolites by GC-MS analysis. This study is the first report to isolate a single TBBPA-degrading bacterial strain under anaerobic conditions for TBBPA debromination and detoxification.
