Background: Significant changes in the pathophysiology of older critically ill patients may affect the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of teicoplanin. This study aimed to determine the optimal teicoplanin blood level in this patient population. Materials & Methods: 128 older critically ill and 86 older non-critically ill patients were involved and analyzed. Results: The target thresholds of teicoplanin blood concentrations in older critically ill patients and non-critically ill patients should be 31.4mg/L and 15.3mg/L, respectively. The dose of teicoplanin in older critically ill patients should be greater than 800 mg to achieve the target blood level. Conclusion : An individualized dosing approach of teicoplanin based on therapeutic drug monitoring is necessary for older critically ill patients.

Although the effects of phytohormones (mainly salicylic acid) on the storability of longan fruit have been reported, the relationship between postharvest hormone variation and signal transduction and storability remains unexplored. The basis of physiology, biochemistry, hormone content and signalling for the storability difference at room-temperature between ‘Shixia’ and ‘Luosanmu’ longan fruit were examined. ‘Luosanmu’ longan exhibited faster pericarp browning, aril breakdown and rotting during storage. ‘Luosanmu’ pericarp exhibited higher malondialdehyde but faster decreased total phenolics, flavonoid, glutathione, vitamin C, catalase activity and gene expression. Higher H2O2 and malondialdehyde but lower glutathione, glutathione-reductase and peroxidase activities, while higher activities and gene expressions of polygalacturonase, β-galactosidase and cellulose, lower covalent-soluble pectin, cellulose and hemicellulose but higher water-soluble pectin were observed in ‘Luosanmu’ aril. Lower abscisic acid and methyl jasmonate but higher expressions of LOX2, JAZ and NPR1 in pericarp, while higher abscisic acid, methyl jasmonate and salicylic acid together with higher expressions of ABF, JAZ, NPR1 and PR-1 in ‘Luosanmu’ aril were observed. In conclusion, the imbalance between the accumulation and scavenging of active oxygen in ‘Luosanmu’ longan might induce faster lipid peroxidation and senescence-related hormone signalling and further the polymerization of phenolics in pericarp and polysaccharide degradation in aril.

BACKGROUND Glioblastoma is the most common type of brain tumor and is invariably fatal, with a mean survival time of 8-15 mo for recently diagnosed tumors, and a 5-year survival rate of only 7.2%. The standard treatment for newly diagnosed glioblastoma includes surgery followed by concurrent chemoradiotherapy and further adjuvant temozolomide. However, the prognosis remains poor and long-term survival is rare. This report aimed to demonstrate a new therapeutic strategy for the treatment of glioblastoma. CASE SUMMARY A patient was referred to the Department of Neurosurgery with an intracranial space-occupying lesion with a maximum diameter of approximately 5 cm. The tumor was compressing functional areas, and the patient accordingly underwent partial resection and concurrent chemoradiotherapy. The imaging and pathological findings were consistent with a diagnosis of glioblastoma with oligodendroglioma differentiation (World Health Organization IV). The patient was finally diagnosed with glioblastoma. However, the patient discontinued treatment due to intolerable side effects, and was prescribed Kangliu pill (KLP) 7.5 g three times/d, which he has continued to date. Significant shrinkage of the tumor (maximum diameter reduced from about 3.5 to about 2 cm) was found after 3 mo of KLP therapy, and the tumor was further reduced to about 1 cm after 3 years. The patient’s symptoms of headache, limb weakness, and left hemiplegia were relieved, with no side effects. CONCLUSION KLP has been a successful intervention for glioblastoma, and the current case indicates that traditional Chinese medicine may offer effective alternative therapies for glioblastoma.

Vancomycin area under the curve/minimum inhibitory concentration (AUC/MIC) has been proposed as a therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) target to dose vancomycin. It is time-consuming to estimate AUCs using traditional methods. A two-point trough-peak method is more straightforward for calculating the vancomycin AUC. However, the technique and the AUC/MIC target have not been validated in Chinese patients.To compare the clinical outcomes of vancomycin therapy in Chinese older adults (aged 60 years) between the trough-only and the two-point peak-trough AUC TDM approaches.The patients were divided into study and control groups according to TDM approaches. A trough-based TDM was used in the control group (target trough level 15-20 mg/L). Stanford University has provided a method to predict vancomycin AUC using peak-valley concentration alone (two-point method). A two-point trough-peak TDM approach was employed in the study group (target AUC/MIC ≥ 400). The effect of vancomycin was evaluated in terms of clinical findings, laboratory values, and bacteriologic responses. The effects of treatment and kidney functions were compared between the two groups.A total of 389 patients met the study inclusion criteria, and 189 were excluded based on the exclusion criteria. Of the 200 patients, 80 received the two-point TDM approach (the study group), and 120 were monitored using the trough-based approach (the control group). The average age was 69.8 ± 7.1 years. Staphylococcus aureus (34%) was the most common Gram-positive bacteria. No vancomycin-related nephrotoxicity was observed in either group. The percentages of patients with an excellent response to vancomycin therapy were significantly higher in the study group than in the control group, 90% (72/80) versus 73.3% (88/120), P = 0.0039.The two-point peak-trough method is practical for obtaining vancomycin AUC. The AUC/MIC ≥ 400 target demonstrates treatment effectiveness and safety in older Chinese patients.

Divergent adaptation to different ecological conditions is regarded as important for speciation. For phytophagous insects, there is limited empirical evidence on species differentiation driven by climate and host plant. The recent application of molecular data and integrative taxonomic practice may improve our understanding of population divergence and speciation. Periphyllus koelreuteriae aphids feed exclusively on Koelreuteria (Sapindaceae) in temperate and subtropical regions of eastern Asia, and show morphological and phenological variations in different regions. In this study, phylogenetic and haplotype network analyses based on four genes revealed that P. koelreuteriae populations comprised three distinct genetic clades corresponding to climate and host plants, with the populations from subtropical highland regions and on Koelreuteria bipinnata host plants representing the most basal clade. These genetic lineages also showed distinct characteristics in terms of morphology and life cycle. The results indicate that P. koelreuteriae is a species complex with previously unrevealed lineages, whose differentiation may have been driven by climatic difference and host plant.

Breast cancer (BC), with complex tumorigenesis and progression, remains the most common malignancy in women. We aimed to explore some novel and significant genes with unfavorable prognoses and potential pathways involved in BC initiation and progression via bioinformatics methods. BC tissue-specific microarray datasets of GSE42568, GSE45827 and GSE54002, which included a total of 651 BC tissues and 44 normal breast tissues, were obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database, and 124 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified between BC tissues and normal breast tissues via R software and an online Venn diagram tool. Database for Annotation, Visualization and Integration Discovery (DAVID) software showed that 65 upregulated DEGs were mainly enriched in the regulation of the cell cycle, and Search Tool for the Retrieval of Interacting Genes (STRING) software identified the 39 closest associated upregulated DEGs in protein-protein interactions (PPIs), which validated the high expression of genes in BC tissues by the Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis (GEPIA) tool. In addition, 36 out of 39 BC patients showed significantly worse outcomes by Kaplan-Meier plotter (KM plotter), and an additional Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis revealed that seven genes (cyclin E2 (CCNE2), cyclin B1 (CCNB1), cyclin B2 (CCNB2), mitotic checkpoint serine/threonine kinase B (BUB1B), dual-specificity protein kinase (TTK), cell division cycle 20 (CDC20), and pituitary tumor transforming gene 1 (PTTG1)) were markedly enriched in the cell cycle pathway. Analysis of the clinicopathological characteristics of hub genes revealed that seven cell cycle-related genes (CCRGs) were significantly highly expressed in four BC subtypes (luminal A, luminal B, HER2-positive and triple-negative (TNBC)), and except for the CCNE2 gene, high expression levels were significantly associated with tumor pathological grade and stage and metastatic events of BC. Furthermore, genetic mutation analysis indicated that genetic alterations of CCRGs could also significantly affect BC patients' prognosis. A quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) assay found that the seven CCRGs were significantly differentially expressed in BC cell lines. Integration of published multilevel expression data and a bioinformatics computational approach were used to predict and construct a regulation mechanism: a transcription factor (TF)-microRNA (miRNA)-messenger RNA (mRNA) regulation network. The present work is the first to construct a regulatory network of TF-miRNA-mRNA in BC for CCRGs and provides new insights into the molecular mechanism of BC.

Formononetin-7-O-β-d-glucoside has been proved to have significant anti-inflammatory effect. To evaluate its rat pharmacokinetics, a rapid, sensitive, and specific liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method has been developed and validated for the quantification of formononetin-7-O-β-d-glucoside and its main metabolite formononetin in rat plasma. Samples were pretreated using a simple protein precipitation and the chromatographic separation was performed on a C18 column by a gradient elution using a mobile phase consisting of water and acetonitrile both containing 0.1% formic acid. Both analytes were detected using a tandem mass spectrometer in positive multiple reaction monitoring mode. The assay showed wide linear dynamic ranges of both 0.10-100 ng/mL, with acceptable intra- and inter-batch accuracy and precision. The lower limits of quantification were both 0.10 ng/mL using 50 μL of rat plasma for two analytes. The method has been successfully used to investigate the oral pharmacokinetic profiles of both analytes in rats. After oral administration of formononetin-7-O-β-d-glucoside at the dose of 50 mg/kg, it was rapidly absorbed in vivo and metabolized to its metabolite formononetin. The plasma concentration-time profiles both showed double-peak phenomena, which would be attributed to the strong enterohepatic circulation of formononetin-7-O-β-d-glucoside.

Denitrification is a vital link in the global bio-nitrogen cycle. Here, we isolated a strain (M9-3-2T) that is a novel benzo[a]pyrene (BaP)-tolerant, anaerobic and aerobic denitrifying bacterium from a continuous BaP-enrichment cultured mangrove sediment. In silico comparative genomics and taxonomic analysis clearly revealed that strain M9-3-2T (=MCCC 1K03313T=JCM 32045T) represents a novel species of a novel genus named as Nitrogeniibacter mangrovi gen. nov., sp. nov., belonging to family Zoogloeaceae , order Rhodocyclales . In addition, the species Azoarcus pumilus is transferred into genus Aromatoleum and named Aromatoleum pumilum comb. nov. The predominant respiratory quinone of strain M9-3-2T was ubiquinone-8 and the major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, three unidentified phospholipids and three unidentified aminophospholipids. In this study, the capacity of strain M9-3-2T to eliminate nitrate was detected under anaerobic and aerobic conditions, and the removal rates of nitrate were 6.1×10−6 µg N/l/h/cell and 3×10−7 µg N/l/h/cell, respectively. Our results suggested that strain M9-3-2T could play an important role in the nitrogen removal regardless of the presence of oxygen in natural or/and man-made ecosystems.

Background: Warfarin is a commonly used oral anticoagulant. It has a narrow therapeutic window and wide variation in individualized dosing, and is used clinically for the treatment of thromboembolic diseases. Due to the widespread use of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in China and the complex composition and diverse mechanisms of action of TCM, the combination of TCM and warfarin in patients has led to fluctuations in the international normalized ratio of warfarin or bleeding. To ensure rational clinical use, we summarize the TCMs with which warfarin interacts and the possible mechanisms, with a view to providing a clinical reference.Aim of the study: To summarize the mechanisms by which Chinese herbal medicines affect the enhancement or weakening of the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, to provide theoretical references for clinicians and pharmacists to use warfarin safely and rationally, and to avoid the adverse effects associated with the combination of Chinese herbal medicines and warfarin.Methods: A computerized literature search of electronic databases, including PubMed, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science (WOS), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and WANFANG Data was performed. Key words used in the literature search were “warfarin”, “Chinese medicine”, “traditional Chinese medicine”, “Chinese patent medicine” etc. and their combinations in a time limit from January 1, 1990 to May 1, 2021. A total of 64 articles were obtained following the selection process, including clinical reports, pharmacological experiments and in vitro experiments which were reviewed to determine the mechanism of the anticoagulant effect of herbal medicine on warfarin.Results: The mechanisms affecting the anticoagulant effect of warfarin are complex, and herbal medicines may enhance and diminish the anticoagulant effect of warfarin through a variety of mechanisms; thus, clinical use needs to be cautious. Some herbal medicines have shown inconsistent results in both in vivo and ex vivo experiments, pharmacology and clinical studies, and should be the focus of future research.Conclusion: With the widespread use of TCM, the combination of warfarin and TCM is more common. This article will promote clinicians’ knowledge and understanding of the TCMs which interact with warfarin, in order to avoid the occurrence of adverse clinical treatment processes, and improve the efficacy and safety.

Simple Summary Most insects are associated with a variety of symbionts that play a crucial role in insect life history. Symbiosis of aphids and their symbionts is a good model system to study insect–symbiont interactions. Pseudoregma bambucicola is a typical social aphid that lives parthenogenetically throughout the year on bamboos in subtropical areas, and it is the only aphid that exclusively feeds on the hard stalks of bamboo. In this study, we surveyed the symbiotic bacterial community associated with P. bambucicola. Our results showed that the diversity of P. bambucicola microbiome was low, but three symbionts, namely the primary endosymbiont Buchnera and two secondary symbionts (Pectobacterium and Wolbachia), were stable coexisting with a high infection rate. Combined with the biology of P. bambucicola, we speculate that Pectobacterium may help P. bambucicola feed on the stalks of bamboo, and Wolbachia may regulate the loss of sexual reproduction or has a nutritional role in P. bambucicola. These findings will advance our knowledge of the microbiomes of social aphids and set the foundation for further studies on the functional roles of P. bambucicola symbionts. Abstract Aphids are associated with an array of symbionts that have diverse ecological and evolutionary effects on their hosts. To date, symbiont communities of most aphid species are still poorly characterized, especially for the social aphids. In this study, high-throughput 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing was used to assess the bacterial communities of the social aphid Pseudoregma bambucicola, and the differences in bacterial diversity with respect to ant attendance and time series were also assessed. We found that the diversity of symbionts in P. bambucicola was low and three dominant symbionts (Buchnera, Pectobacterium and Wolbachia) were stably coexisting. Pectobacterium may help P. bambucicola feed on the hard bamboo stems, and genetic distance analysis suggests that the Pectobacterium in P. bambucicola may be a new symbiont species. Wolbachia may be associated with the transition of reproduction mode or has a nutritional role in P. bambucicola. Statistical tests on the diversity of bacterial communities in P. bambucicola suggest that aphid populations attended by ants usually have a significantly higher evenness than populations without ant attendance but there was no significant difference among aphid populations from different seasons.

A Gram-stain-negative strain, designated FM6T, was isolated from surface seawater sampled at the port in Xiamen, PR China. Strain FM6T showed less than 96.3 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to the type strains of species with validly published names. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain FM6T belonged to the family Sphingomonadaceae and was closely related to species of the genera Sphingomonas (96.3 %) and Stakelama (96.0 %). Ubiquinone-10 was the predominant respiratory quinone. Cells were motile with a single polar flagellum. Growth occurred at temperatures from 20 to 45 °C (optimum, 30 °C), at pH values between pH 6.0 and 8.0 (optimum, pH 7.0) and in 0–4.0 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 1.0–1.5 %). Predominant polar lipids were sphingoglycolipid, phosphatidylcholine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, five unidentified glycolipids and five unidentified polar lipids. The major fatty acids were summed feature 8 (containing C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c). The DNA G+C content of the type strain was 63.8 mol%. On the basis of the results of phylogenetic analysis, combined with phenotypic and chemotaxonomic data, strain FM6T is considered to represent a novel species in a new genus in the family Sphingomonadaceae for which the name Sphingosinithalassobacter portus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Sphingosinithalassobacter portus gen. nov., sp. nov. is FM6T (=MCCC 1K03501T=JCM 32714T).

Mangrove ecosystems are natural nitrogen removal systems that are primarily mediated by nitrogen cycle microorganisms, but their relative contributions to nitrogen transformation and removal in mangrove sediments under anthropogenic nitrogen input needs further resolution and characterization. Here, we investigated the responses and the relative contributions of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA), ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), anaerobic ammonium oxidizing (anammox) bacteria and denitrifying bacteria after spiking urea into mangrove sediments incubated in a laboratory microcosm experiment for four weeks. During incubation, the diversity, abundances and transcription levels of the hzo genes for anammox bacteria, amoA genes for AOA and AOB, and nirS genes for denitrifying bacteria were monitored using targeted gene clone library analyses and quantitative PCR assays at the DNA and RNA levels. The results showed that mangrove sediments harbour habitat-specific anammox bacteria which related to Candidatus Scalindua and Candidatus Kuenenia clades. Mangrove specific AOA related to deep branched clades within Candidatus Nitrososphaera and Candidatus Nitrosotalea, and AOB related to Nitrosomonas and Nitrosospira were also detected in the collected sediment samples. Growth and activity of AOA were detected at all levels of amendment of nitrogen input, whereas AOB growth was detectable only at the high-level nitrogen input (1.5 mg urea per gram of dry sediment) with no amoA transcripts and lower abundance than AOA. The abundance and transcription levels of the nirS gene were higher (~1000 times) than those of the hzo gene in all groups. Pearson correlation analysis demonstrated that the abundance of both AOA and AOB amoA genes had a significant positive correlation with the nirS gene (p 0.01). These results indicated that nitrification (primarily mediated by the AOA)-denitrification process played the most important role in nitrogen removal from the amendment of nitrogen short-term input in the mangrove sediments.

Orders Oceanospirillales and Pseudomonadales play important roles in various ecosystems as the keystone taxa of microbiomes. However, the two orders present a close evolutionary relationship, which might have caused taxonomic misinterpretation and resulted in an incorrect understanding of their evolutionary history. In this study, first, we used the 16S rRNA gene sequences of 2,049 species of Gammaproteobacteria to build a phylogenetic tree, which demonstrated that reports regarding the evolutionary relationship of orders Cellvibrionales, Oceanospirillales, and Pseudomonadales based on a single conserved gene with a poor resolution have been conflicting; in particular, the major families Moraxellaceae and Pseudomonadaceae of order Pseudomonadales were separated from orders Cellvibrionales and Oceanospirillales. Subsequently, we constructed the bac120 trees of all representative reference genomes of class Gammaproteobacteria based on 120 ubiquitous single-copy proteins from bacteria and a phylogenomic tree based on the 119 core genes of 257 reference genomes obtained from orders Cellvibrionales, Oceanospirillales, and Pseudomonadales to cross validate and infer their intrinsic evolutionary relationships. These results indicated that two novel orders, Moraxellales ord. nov. and Kangiellales ord. nov., and three novel families, Marinobacteraceae fam. nov., Perlucidibacaceae fam. nov., and Zooshikellaceae fam. nov., should be proposed. Additionally, orders Cellvibrionales and Oceanospirillales were merged into the order Pseudomonadales except for families Moraxellaceae and Kangiellaceae in class Gammaproteobacteria, which currently includes 18 families. Our work sheds some light on the evolutionary history of class Gammaproteobacteria, which could facilitate the detection and taxonomic analysis of natural communities. IMPORTANCE The orders Cellvibrionales, Oceanospirillales, and Pseudomonadales, as three major orders of the largest bacterial class, Gammaproteobacteria, play important roles in various ecosystems as the keystone taxa of microbiomes, but their evolutionary relationship is currently polyphyletic and chaotic. Here, we constructed a bac120 tree and core-genome tree and calculated the amino acid identity (AAI) value to explore their intrinsic evolutionary history. In this study, we proposed two novel orders and three novel families. This evolution study vastly reconstructed the taxonomic framework of class Gammaproteobacteria and could provide a more distinct perspective on global distribution and evolutionary patterns of these environmental microorganisms.

Background Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an emerging and rapidly evolving disease, with no recommended effective anti-coronavirus drug treatment. Traditional Chinese Patent Medicines (CPMs) have, however, been widely used to treat COVID-19 in China, and a number of clinical practice results have shown them to have a significant role in its treatment. Consequently, numerous guidelines and expert consensus have recommended the use of CPMs to treat COVID-19. Aim of the study The objectives of this review are to provide up-to-date information on the pharmacology and clinical research on CPMs in the treatment of COVID-19, discuss the research findings, and to better guide clinical application and scientific research on CPMs in the treatment of COVID-19. Methods The frequencies of CPM recommendations by guidelines and expert consensus for treatment of COVID-19 in China were ranked. This report identifies the top 10 CPMs, which include Huoxiang Zhengqi capsule (HXZQC), Lianhua Qingwen capsule (LHQWC), Jinhua Qinggan granule (JHQGG), Shufeng Jiedu capsule (SFJDC), Tanreqing injection (TRQI), Xiyanping injection (XYPI), Xuebijing injection (XBJI), Shenfu injection (SFI), Shengmai injection (SMI), and Angong Niuhuang pill (AGNHP). Relevant studies from 2000 to 2020 on these top 10 CPMs, covering usage, dosage, mechanism, curative effect, and precautions, were collected from pharmacopoeia, reports, and theses via library and digital databases (including PubMed, CNKI, Google Scholar, Web of Science, and Elsevier). Results The properties of the top 10 CPMs included antiviral, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic and analgesic, anti-acute lung injury, anti-shock, immune regulation, and enhancement of pulmonary function. In addition, clinical research results and Chinese treatment data showed that the CPMs had good therapeutic efficacy in the treatment of COVID-19, and adverse reactions were minimal. Conclusions Knowledge of the characteristics of the top 10 CPMs and precautions that should be taken may help clinicians to rationally improve therapeutic efficacy, and promote the role of Chinese Medicine in the control of the COVID-19 global epidemic.

Background To explore the clinical features of the patients with BCR-ABL1-negative chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) in our hospital and to reveal the unique features of BCR-ABL1-negative MPNs patients in our center. Methods Retrospective analysis of routine karyotype analysis results, driver gene mutations and other related clinical parameters of 172 patients with newly diagnosed BCR-ABL1-negative MPNs who were admitted to our hospital between October 2013 and June 2018. Results (1) The rate of karyotypic abnormalities were 25, 6.3 and 2.9% in primary myelofibrosis (PMF), polycythemia vera (PV) and essential thrombocythemia (ET) patients, respectively. (2) The mutation rate of JAK2-V617F was 62.5%, and that of the CALR, MPL and EZH2 genes was 4.2% in PMF. The mutation rates of JAK2-V617F and JAK2-12exon were 91.3 and 1.3% in PV, respectively. The mutation rates of JAK2-V617F and CALR were 69.1 and 11.8% in ET, respectively. (3) Patients with JAK2-V617F mutation than with the wild-type gene were more often female in PMF (P = 0.027); had higher peripheral blood white blood cell (WBC) counts (P = 0.006), platelet (PLT) count (P = 0.001) and splenomegaly (P P = 0.001), hemoglobin concentrations (P = 0.001), lower PLT (P = 0.037), splenomegaly and endogenous coagulopathy (P Conclusion PMF patients have more chromosomal abnormalities than PV and ET patients, and the effect of driver mutations on the clinical features of patients with MPNs differs among the three subtypes.

As one of the most abundant and complex groups of terrestrial insects, ants have associations with many other organismal groups, such as hemipteran insects producing honeydew. With the aim of expanding the knowledge base of ant species associated with aphids, this study analyzed mitochondrial COI barcodes of 301 ant samples for 37 aphid-associated ant species in a subtropical area of southern China. Sequence analyses revealed that the intraspecific and interspecific distances ranged from zero to 7.7%% and 0.2 to 31.7%, respectively. Three barcoding approaches – Automatic Barcode Gap Discovery, Bayesian Poisson Tree Processes and Generalized Mixed Yule-coalescent – were used to help delimit ant species based on COI sequences, and their results corresponded well with most of the morphospecies. All three approaches indicate cryptic diversity may exist within Tetramorium bicarinatum and Technomyrmex albipes, with intraspecific genetic distances of 7.7% and 6.24%, respectively. Our analyses also reported five species for the first time from Fujian Province of China, and the COI sequences of nine species are newly added into the GenBank. This study provides information about species diversity of aphid-associated ants in subtropical China and compiles a DNA barcode reference library for future ant barcoding work.

Patients and methods: A total of 333 eligible patients with current major depressive episode were observed and followed up from the first index prescription for 5 years. Lack of persistence or treatment interruption was defined as a gap of at least 2 consecutive months without taking any medication. Time to lack of persistence in the first (TLP1) and the second (TLP2) episode of treatment, number of visits before the first treatment interruption (NV) and number of treatment interruptions (NTI) were measured. Results: During the 5-year follow-up, nearly 50% of patients experienced at least two times of treatment interruption. Pattern of medication persistence did not significantly differ between UD and bipolar disorder (BD) patients. TLP1 was positively associated with TLP2. Shorter TLP1 predicted a higher possibility of subsequent visits because of recurrence or relapse and more NTI meant a lower likelihood of achieving full remission in the fifth year for both UD and BD patients. For UD patients, shorter TLP1 or less NV predicted a lower chance of achieving remission, while for BD patients, shorter TLP1 meant an earlier subsequent visit and more NTI predicted a lower possibility of achieving remission. Conclusion: Pattern of medication persistence was similar but its impact on the long-term outcome was quite different between UD and BD. Nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (n-damo), which is mediated by “Candidatus Methylomirabilis oxyfera-like” bacteria, is unique in linking the carbon and nitrogen cycles. However, the niche and activity of n-damo bacteria in the mangrove ecosystem have not been confirmed. Here, we report the occurrence of the n-damo process in the mangrove wetland of the Zhangjiang Estuary, China. The widespread occurrence of n-damo bacteria in mangrove wetland was confirmed using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assay, which showed that the abundance of Methylomirabilis oxyfera-like bacterial 16S rRNA and pmoA genes ranged from 2.43 × 106 to 2.09 × 107 and 2.07 × 106 to 3.38 × 107copies per gram of dry soil in the examined sediment cores. The highest amount of targeting genes was all detected in the upper layer (0–20 cm). Phylogenetic analyses of n-damo bacterial 16S rRNA and pmoA genes illustrated the depth-specific distribution and high diversity of n-damo bacteria in the mangrove wetland. Stable isotope experiments further confirmed the occurrence of n-damo in the examined mangrove sediments, and the potential n-damo rates ranged from 25.93 to 704.08 nmol CO2 per gram of dry soil per day at different depths of the sediment cores, with the n-damo being more active in the upper layer of the mangrove sediments. These results illustrate the existence of active M. oxyfera-like bacteria and indicate that the n-damo process is a previously overlooked microbial methane sink in the mangrove wetlands.

Temperature is generally considered to be the primary factor controlling the nitrogen removal rate (NR) in nitrate (NO3−)-rich submerged sediments. Temperature stimulates both sediment oxygen (O2) respiration, to create anaerobic conditions, and microbial photosynthetic activity, to provide the organic carbon required for denitrification and expand the uppermost aerobic layer, i.e., the O2 penetration depth (OPD). The OPD serves as a diffusion barrier for NO3− to the underlying anaerobic layer for denitrification. The complex effects of O2 and temperature on the NR are unclear under field conditions with a wide range of temperatures and O2 suppliers. This study aimed to determine the combined effects of O2 and temperature on the NR in an NO3−-rich, riparian ex-paddy wetland (“yatsu” environment) under long-term bare soil conditions. We used three years of field monitoring with occasional O2 microprofile measurements from undisturbed submerged soil cores. We observed vertical supersaturated O2 concentration plateaus up to 4.2 mm depth, which confirmed the presence of underground O2 producers, i.e., photosynthetic microorganisms forming habitat in the soil, and very large OPDs of up to 42.9 mm. A multiple regression analysis showed that temperature and dissolved O2 concentration in the flooded water were the key positive and negative influences, respectively, on the NR (332 kg N ha−1 year−1 on average), in association with the total N input. Microbial photosynthesis appeared to remain active regardless of the season, providing O2 to increase OPD and partly suppress the NR; however, photosynthesis has increased the soil C content and appears to have positively contributed to a sustained NR during the 20 years of bare soil conditions. Our results suggest that temporal no vegetation-shade (bare soil) conditions with periodic weed cutting is recommended to effectively remove N from the watershed, while maintaining high temperatures and soil organic C in yatsu environments.

Social aphids produce different morphs, which are genetically identical but morphologically different. Each morph performs a different duty in its community. Social aphids usually produce morphologically distinct soldiers to protect their colonies. The social aphid Pseudoregma bambucicola produces sterile first instar soldiers with specialized body parts and unique defensive behaviors, such as hind leg waving. By using this species as a research model, this study tested the assumption that the functional morphological basis of defensive behaviors of soldiers is related to specialized body parts. Field observations and a comprehensive morphometric analysis were carried out for natural populations. The results showed significant differences in functional morphology between soldiers, first instar nymphs, and adults. Elongated hind legs in soldiers are an important functional morphological basis for the deimatic behavior of hind leg waving, while sclerotized front legs and head horns are related to the function of directly attacking natural enemies. The size variation of different body parts among different morphs also indicates a cost&ndash, benefit trade-off in the evolution of the social aphid species.

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox), a microbial process in which NH4+ is oxidized to N2 gas, is considered a significant nitrogen cycle process, but its significance in mangrove wetland sediments, particularly its depth- and genus-specific distribution and activity have remained uncertain. Here we report the vertical distribution, abundance, activity and role of anammox bacteria in mangrove sediments of Zhangjiang Estuary, China. We used stable isotope-tracer techniques, 16S rRNA and anammox bacterial functional gene (Hydrazine synthase B: hzsB) clone libraries and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assays, along with an assessment of nutrient profiles of sediment core samples. We observed a widespread occurrence of anammox bacteria at different depths of mangrove sediments. The abundance of anammox bacterial 16S rRNA and hzsB genes ranged from 0.41×107 to 9.74×107 and from 0.42×106 to 6.44×106 copies per gram of dry soil and peaked in the upper layer of mangrove sediments. We also verified the co-occurrence of different genera of anammox microorganisms in mangrove sediments, with Candidatus Scalindua and Candidatus Kuenenia being the dominant genera. Potential anammox rates ranged from 4.83 to 277.36 nmolN2·g-1·d-1 at different depths of sediment cores, and the highest rates were found in the deeper layer (70-100cm) of mangrove sediments. Scaling our findings up to the entire mangrove system, we estimated that anammox hotspots accounted for a loss of 751 gN·m-2·y-1, and contributed to over 12% of the nitrogen lost from the deeper layer of mangrove sediments in this region.

The morphology of many insect species is usually influenced by environmental factors and therefore high phenotypic variation exists even within a species. This causes difficulty and uncertainty in species taxonomy, which can be remedied by using molecular data and integrative taxonomy. Astegopteryxbambusae and A.bambucifoliae are currently regarded as two closely related aphid species with similar bamboo hosts and overlapping distributions in the oriental region. However, in practice it is hard to distinguish between them. By incorporating molecular data from four mitochondrial and nuclear genes as well as morphological information from an extensive collection of live specimens, the present study indicates that A.bambucifoliae is a junior synonym of A.bambusae. The data also indicate that large-scale geographic patterns of population differentiation may exist within this species.
