Abstract SARS-CoV-2 JN.1 with an additional L455S mutation on spike when compared with its parental variant BA.2.86 has outcompeted all earlier variants to become the dominant circulating variant. Recent studies investigated the immune resistance of SARS-CoV-2 JN.1 but additional factors are speculated to contribute to its global dominance, which remain elusive until today. Here, we find that SARS-CoV-2 JN.1 has a higher infectivity than BA.2.86 in differentiated primary human nasal epithelial cells (hNECs). Mechanistically, we demonstrate that the gained infectivity of SARS-CoV-2 JN.1 over BA.2.86 associates with increased entry efficiency conferred by L455S and better spike cleavage in hNECs. Structurally, S455 altered the mode of binding of JN.1 spike protein to ACE2 when compared to BA.2.86 spike at ACE2H34, and modified the internal structure of JN.1 spike protein by increasing the number of hydrogen bonds with neighboring residues. These findings indicate that a single mutation (L455S) enhances virus entry in hNECs and increases immune evasiveness, which contribute to the robust transmissibility of SARS-CoV-2 JN.1. We further evaluate the in vitro and in vivo virological characteristics between SARS-CoV-2 BA.2.86/JN.1 and EG.5.1/HK.3, and identify key lineage-specific features of the two Omicron sublineages that contribute to our understanding on Omicron antigenicity, transmissibility, and pathogenicity.

Abstract Background This study aims to investigate the morphological characteristics of the distal humerus in healthy adults from northern China using computed tomography and three-dimensional reconstruction techniques and compared whether there were diferences in morphology among populations from diferent geographical regions. Methods The CT data of 80 patients were imported into Mimics software for three-dimensional reconstruction and measurement. The differences in distal humeral morphological parameters between different genders and sides were compared, and the correlation between the parameters was explored. The distal humeral morphological parameters between Western and Chinese populations based on current and previous pooled results were compared. Results Thirty-one morphological parameters were measured and analyzed in this study. Abstract Background Congenital optic disc pit (ODP) is a relatively uncommon congenital anomaly of the optic disc, which seriously affects the patient’s vision when combined with optic disc pit maculopathy(ODP-M). Currently, the treatment of ODP-M remains a clinical challenge and a focus of research. Case presentation A boy had a pit in the inferotemporal segment of the optic disc with ODP-M. Optical Coherence Tomography(OCT) showed ODP and serous retinal detachment. He was treated with pars plana vitrectomy(PPV), followed by Corneal Stromal Lenticule (CSL) sealing and C3F8 tamponade. In the end, significant anatomical improvement was achieved, and the Best Corrected Visual Acuity(BCVA) was improved. Conclusions The CSL transplantation may be a viable therapeutic option for improving ODP-M with stable anatomical and functional result. However, more cases and longer follow-up are needed to confirm the safety and effectiveness of the technology.

Abstract Background Global warming has greatly increased the impact of high temperatures on crops, resulting in reduced yields and increased mortality. This phenomenon is of significant importance to the rose flower industry because high-temperature stress leads to bud dormancy or even death, reducing ornamental value and incurring economic losses. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying the response and resistance of roses to high-temperature stress can serve as an important reference for cultivating high-temperature-stress-resistant roses. Results To evaluate the impact of high temperatures on rose plants, we measured physiological indices in rose leaves following heat stress. Protein and chlorophyll contents were significantly decreased, whereas proline and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents, and peroxidase (POD) activity were increased. Subsequently, transcriptomics and metabolomics analyses identified 4,652 common differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 57 common differentially abundant metabolites (DAMs) in rose plants from four groups. Enrichment analysis showed that DEGs and DAMs were primarily involved in the mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) signaling pathway, plant hormone signal transduction, alpha-linolenic acid metabolism, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, and flavonoid biosynthesis. The combined analysis of the DEGs and DAMs revealed that flavonoid biosynthesis pathway-related genes, such as chalcone isomerase (CHI), shikimate O-hydroxycinnamoyl transferase (HCT), flavonol synthase (FLS), and bifunctional dihydroflavonol 4-reductase/flavanone 4-reductase (DFR), were downregulated after heat stress. Moreover, in the MAPK signaling pathway, the expression of genes related to jasmonic acid exhibited a decrease, but ethylene receptor (ETR/ERS), P-type Cu + transporter (RAN1), ethylene-insensitive protein 2/3 (EIN2), ethylene-responsive transcription factor 1 (ERF1), and basic endochitinase B (ChiB), which are associated with the ethylene pathway, were mostly upregulated. Furthermore, heterologous overexpression of the heat stress-responsive gene RcHSP70 increased resistance to heat stress in Arabidopsis thaliana. Conclusion The results of this study indicated that the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway, MAPK signaling pathway, and plant hormones may be involved in high-temperature resistance in roses. Constitutive expression of RcHSP70 may contribute to increasing high-temperature tolerance. This study provides new insights into the genes and metabolites induced in roses in response to high temperature, and the results provide a reference for analyzing the molecular mechanisms underlying resistance to heat stress in roses.

Realgar-Indigo Naturalis Formula (RIF) is an oral form of arsenic that is effective against acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). This multicenter, randomized, controlled trial compared the efficacy of all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) plus RIF with ATRA plus arsenic trioxide (ATO) in a simplified regimen for non-high-risk APL. Following induction therapy with ATRA and ATO, participants were randomly assigned to receive either ATRA plus ATO or ATRA plus RIF both in a 2-week on 2-week off schedule for consolidation therapy. Once achieving molecular complete remission, the regimen was administered for a total of 6 cycles. All of 108 eligible patients achieved hematological complete remission after induction therapy. The median follow-up time was 29 months. The primary endpoint of two-year disease-free survival was 97% in the ATRA-RIF arm and 98% in the ATRA-ATO arm, respectively. (The ATRA-RIF arm was found to be non-inferior to the ATRA-ATO arm, (P < .01), with a percentage difference of -1% (95%CI, -4.8 to 6.9). No deaths have been observed. Most adverse events were moderate. This study confirms the noninferiority of RIF to ATO for non-high-risk APL, while also offering a more favorable regimen schedule for post-remission therapy. Background: Ischemic stroke is a common and serious disease with economic and healthcare burdens. Predicting the unfavorable discharge outcome of patients is essential for formulating appropriate treatment strategies and providing personalized care. Therefore, this study aims to establish and validate a prediction model based on machine learning methods to accurately predict the discharge outcome of ischemic stroke patients, providing valuable information for clinical decision making. Methods: The derivation data consisted of 964 patients from Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital and was used for training and internal validation. A favourable discharge outcome was defined as a National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score of ≤1 or a decrease of ≥8 points compared to the admission score. A predictive model was created based on 88 medical characteristics gathered during the patient's initial admission, using nine machine learning algorithms. The model's predictive performance was compared using various evaluation metrics. The final model's feature importance was ranked and explained using the Shapley additive explanation method. Findings: The random forest model demonstrated the greatest discriminative ability among the nine machine learning models. We created an interpretable random forest model by ranking and reducing the features based on their importance, which included eight features. In internal validations, the final model accurately predicted the discharge outcomes of ischemic stroke with AUC values of 0.903 and has been translated into a convenient tool to facilitate its utility in clinical settings. Conclusions: Our explainable ML model was not only successfully developed to accurately predict discharge outcomes in patients with ischemic stroke and it mitigated the concern of the “black-box” issue with an undirect interpretation of the ML technique.

The clearance of apoptotic cell debris, containing professional phagocytosis and non-professional phagocytosis, is essential for maintaining the homeostasis of healthy tissues. Here, we discovered that endothelial cells could engulf apoptotic cell debris in atherosclerotic plaque. Single-cell RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) has revealed a unique endothelial cell subpopulation in atherosclerosis, which was strongly associated with vascular injury-related pathways. Moreover, integrated analysis of three vascular injury-related RNA-seq datasets showed that the expression of scavenger receptor class B type 1 (SR-B1) was up-regulated and specifically enriched in the phagocytosis pathway under vascular injury circumstances. Single-cell RNA-seq and bulk RNA-seq indicate that SR-B1 was highly expressed in a unique endothelial cell subpopulation of mouse aorta and strongly associated with the reorganization of cellular adherent junctions and cytoskeleton which were necessary for phagocytosis. Furthermore, SR-B1 was strongly required for endothelial cells to engulf apoptotic cell debris in atherosclerotic plaque of both mouse and human aorta. Overall, this study demonstrated that apoptotic cell debris could be engulfed by endothelial cells through SR-B1 and associated with the reorganization of cellular adherent junctions and cytoskeleton.

Abstract Background Unhealthy lifestyle behaviors among adolescents have emerged as a significant public health concern worldwide, however, there is little investigation on the impact of unhealthy behaviors on non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), suicidal ideation (SI) and suicide attempt (SA). This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of seven unhealthy behaviors as well as their associations with NSSI, SI and SA, and to explore whether the aforementioned associations differ across sex. Methods A total of 74,152 adolescents were included in this study via a multi-stage, stratified cluster, random sampling method in 2021. Information about unhealthy behaviors (insufficient physical activity, current smoking, current drinking, excessive screen time, long homework time, insufficient sleep and unhealthy BMI), NSSI, SI, SA and other demographics was collected. Sampling weights were used to estimate the prevalence, and the weighted logistic regression models were performed. Stratified analyses by sex and sensitive analyses were conducted. Results Overview, the weighted prevalence of adolescents had more than five unhealthy behaviors were 5.2%, with boys showing a higher prevalence than girls (6.5% vs.3.8%). Current smoking, current drinking, excessive screen use, long homework time, insufficient sleep, and unhealthy BMI were significantly associated with NSSI, SI and SA. Moreover, adolescents with high lifestyle risk scores were associated with an increased risk of NSSI (5–7 vs. 0: OR 6.38, 95% CI 5.24–7.77), SI (5–7 vs. 0: OR 7.67, 95% CI 6.35–9.25), and SA (5–7 vs. 0: OR 9.57, 95% CI 6.95–13.17). Significant sex differences were found in the associations of unhealthy behaviors with NSSI, SI and SA. Conclusion Unhealthy behaviors are quite common among Chinese adolescents. Adolescents with multiple unhealthy behaviors are associated with increased risks of NSSI, SI, and SA. The implementation of school and family-based interventions to promote healthy lifestyles is recommended as a preventive measure against self-injurious behavior and suicidality in adolescents.

Abstract Purpose To evaluate the association of body stature with ocular biometrics and refraction in preschool children. Methods A cross-sectional, school-based study was conducted in Shenzhen, China. Preschool children aged 3 to 6 from 10 randomly-selected kindergartens were recruited. Ocular biometric parameters, including axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), vitreous chamber depth (VCD), corneal radius curvature (CR), axial length to corneal radius ratio (AL-to-CR ratio) and lens thickness (LT) were measured using non-contact partial-coherence laser interferometry. Cycloplegic refractions were obtained by a desktop autorefractor. Body height and weight were measured using standard procedures. ABSTRACT Esophageal cancer (EC) is a multifaceted disease. Our understanding of the involvement of esophageal microbiota in its pathogenesis and progression is limited, which is due to the lack of proper endoscopic sampling methods. Hereby, we conducted a comparative analysis of paired samples obtained through endoscopic brushing and cytosponge, aiming at assessing the feasibility of using cytosponge as a minimally invasive sampling way for studying esophageal microbiota. Our findings suggest that cytosponge sampling yielded significantly superior community richness and diversity compared to endoscopic brushing in both controls (non-cancerous) and EC individuals. The analysis of beta-diversity revealed distinct microbial community pattern in the genus diversity between the two sampling methods, underscoring the importance of selecting appropriate sampling methods to effectively characterize the esophageal microbiota. Specifically, Lactococcus and Serratia showed higher abundance in the samples collected by endoscopic brushing, while Alloprevotella and Leptotrichia were more enriched in the samples collected by cytosponge. These differences in dominant microbes were associated with metabolic pathways that particularly were related to host inflammation, such as pyruvate and glucose metabolisms. Notably, the phylogenetic levels of the microbiota indicated varied explanatory power for different detection purposes. This study underscores the substantial impact of sampling method selection on the acquisition of esophageal microbiota associated with the EC development, encompassing considerations of both abundance and diversity. This highlights the significance of selecting an appropriate sampling method for investigating the esophageal microbial status and studying the micro-environment in EC-related individuals.IMPORTANCEThis study addresses a critical issue in esophageal cancer study by comparing two different sampling methods, endoscopic brushing and cytosponge, for investigating the esophageal microbiota. Our work highlights the suitability of the cytosponge technique as a minimally invasive sampling method for studying the esophageal microbiota and emphasizes the importance of selecting an appropriate sampling method to characterize the microbial community. Our findings have significant implications for advancing the understanding of the role of the esophageal microbiota in cancer development and will inform future research and clinical approaches in this field.

Summary: Nanoparticles have shown great potential for tumor targeting delivery via enhanced permeability and retention effect. However, the tumor mechanical microenvironment, characterized by dense extracellular matrix (ECM), high tumor stiffness and solid stress, leads to only 0.7% of administered dose accumulating in solid tumors and even fewer (∼0.0014%) reaching tumor cells, limiting the therapeutic efficacy of nanoparticles. Furthermore, the tumor mechanical microenvironment can regulate tumor cell stemness, promote tumor invasion, metastasis and reduce treatment efficacy. In this review, methods detecting the mechanical are introduced. Strategies for modulating the mechanical microenvironment including elimination of dense ECM by physical, chemical and biological methods, disruption of ECM formation, depletion or inhibition of cancer-associated fibroblasts, are then summarized. Finally, prospects and challenges for further clinical applications of mechano-modulating strategies to enhance the therapeutic efficacy of nanomedicines are discussed. This review may provide guidance for the rational design and application of nanoparticles in clinical settings.

ObjectiveTo analyze current situation and problems of maternal health care services provided by primary medical institutions in China for making relevant policy recommendations. MethodsDuring May – June 2022, we extracted the data of 2021 on the establishment and operation of obstetrics and gynecology departments submitted by 4 737 township health centers and 1 669 community health service centers in 6 provinces (Zhejiang and Jiangsu, Hubei and Henan, Sichuan and Guizhou representing eastern, central, and western socio-economic regions of China) from the 'Information System of Quality Medical Service at Grassroots Level Program' initiated by National Health Commission. Descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression analysis were conducted using stata16.0 software to examine the status and influencing factors of maternal health care services provided by the primary institutions. ResultsFor the township health centers and community health service centers, the proportions of institutions with gynecology departments were 72.79% (3 448/4 737) and 79.51% (1 327/1 669) and proportions of those with obstetrics departments were 29.07% (1 377/4 737) and 14.92% (249/1 669), respectively; the proportion of the community health service centers with practicing obstetricians and gynecologists was 82.92% (1 384/1 669), higher than that (61.98%, 2 936/4 737) of the township health centers. The provision of obstetrics and gynecology services in the primary medical institutions was relatively low in quality and quantity. For example, the proportions of township health centers and community health service centers providing midwifery for women with singleton delivery were 22.38% (1 060/4 737) and 10.37% (173/1 669), respectively, with an average daily service of less than one midwifery process. The equipment allocation rates for automatic biochemical analyzers and other related instruments were above 80% for all the primary institutions. The proportions of township health centers and community health service centers supplied with at least one type of drugs on uterine contraction were 51.11% (2 421/4 737) and 49.13% (820/1 669) respectively. The results of multivariate linear logistic regression analysis showed that region, number of staff in active service, number of beds available, proportion of pregnant women with contracted service, and equipment of color Doppler ultrasound instrument had significant influence on the rates of pregnant women registration in first trimester and postpartum visit; the establishment of gynecology departments only had a significant impact on the rate of postpartum visitation. ConclusionThe capability of maternal health services in primary medical institutions is gradually shrinking, and some of the institutions cannot meet the conditions for providing maternal health care services and can only assume responsibility for information management. The assessment criteria and service content of maternal health projects in primary medical institutions need to be adjusted urgently.

Abstract This was a single-arm, multicenter phase 2 clinical trial (ChiCTR1900021726) involving advanced squamous non-small cell lung cancer (sq-NSCLC) patients undergoing 2 cycles of nab-paclitaxel/carboplatin and sintilimab (anti-PD-1), followed by sintilimab maintenance therapy. The median progression-free survival (PFS) was 11.4 months (95% CI: 6.7-18.1), which met the pre-specified primary endpoint. Secondary endpoints included objective response rate reaching 70.5% and a disease control rate of 93.2%, with a median duration of response of 13.6 months [95% CI: 7.0–not evaluable (NE)]. The median overall survival was 27.2 months (95% CI: 20.2–NE) with treatment-related adverse events grades ≥3 occurring in 10.9% of patients. Predefined exploratory endpoints comprised relationships between biomarkers and treatment efficacy, and the association between circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) dynamics and PFS. Biomarker analysis revealed that the breast cancer gene 2, BMP/Retinoic Acid Inducible Neural Specific 3, F-box/WD repeat-containing protein 7, tyrosine-protein kinase KIT and retinoblastoma 1 abnormalities led to shorter PFS, while ctDNA negative at baseline or clearance at 2 cycles of treatment was associated with longer PFS (18.1 vs. 4.3 months). Taken together, sintilimab in combination with 2 cycles of nab-paclitaxel/carboplatin treatment produced encouraging PFS and better tolerability as first-line treatment for advanced sq-NSCLC.

Summary: SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant has evolved into sublineages. Here, we compared the neutralization susceptibility and viral fitness of EG.5.1 and XBB.1.9.1. Serum neutralization antibody titer against EG.5.1 was 1.71-fold lower than that for XBB.1.9.1. However, there was no significant difference in virus replication between EG.5.1 and XBB.1.9.1 in human nasal organoids and TMPRSS2/ACE2 over-expressing A549 cells. No significant difference was observed in competitive fitness and cytokine/chemokine response between EG.5.1 and XBB.1.9.1. Both EG.5.1 and XBB.1.9.1 replicated more robustly in the nasal organoid from a younger adult than that from an older adult. Our findings suggest that enhanced immune escape contributes to the dominance of EG.5.1 over earlier sublineages. The combination of population serum susceptibility testing and viral fitness evaluation with nasal organoids may hold promise in risk assessment of upcoming variants. Utilization of serum specimens and nasal organoid derived from older adults provides a targeted risk assessment for this vulnerable population.

Background: This study aims to determine the efficacy and safety profile of aumolertinib in the real-word treatment setting for advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients harboring epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations.Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 173 EGFR-mutated advanced NSCLC patients who received aumolertinib treatment at Henan Cancer Hospital from April 2020 to December 2022. Progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were evaluated using Kaplan–Meier survival curves, while a Cox regression model was used for multifactorial analysis and prognostic factor assessment.Results: Among patients administered first-line aumolertinib (n = 77), the objective remission rate (ORR) of 77.92% was observed, along with a disease control rate (DCR) of 100%. The median progression-free survival (mPFS) was 24.97 months, which did not reach the median overall survival (mOS). The patients treated with aumolertinib after progression on prior EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy (n = 96) exhibited an ORR of 46.88%, a DCR of 89.58%, an mPFS of 15.17 months, and an mOS of 21.27 months. First-line treatment multivariate Cox regression analysis demonstrated a statistically significant impact of elevated creatine kinase on PFS (p = 0.016) and a similar significant influence of co-mutation on OS (p = 0.034). Furthermore, subsequent-line treatment multivariate Cox regression analysis showed a statistically significant impact of elevated creatine kinase on median PFS (p = 0.026) and a significant effect on the number of metastatic organs (p = 0.017), co-mutation (p = 0.035), and elevated creatine kinase (p = 0.014) on median OS.Conclusion: Aumolertinib has shown clinical significance and can safely be used in the real-world setting for patients with EGFR mutation-positive NSCLC.

159 wheat varieties obtained from ICARDA, CYR32, CYR33 and CYR34 were used to evaluate the stripe rust resistance in this study. Seedling resistance was carried out in the green house at the two-leaf stage. Adult-plant resistance was carried out between 2022 and 2023 in Xining and Guide, respectively. A total of 24,151 high-quality SNP loci were obtained from a 55K SNP chip data. Genome-wide association study was carried out between SNP loci and stripe rust resistance. Seedling resistance screening revealed that 91.8% (146) of wheat varieties were resistant to CYR32 and CYR33, while only 49.7% (79) of wheat varieties were resistant to CYR34. Adult-plant resistance showed 153 (96.2%) germplasms represented resistance in 2022, while only 85 (53.4%) showed resistance in 2023. An association study using the 55K SNP chip data results combined with disease ratings of 159 materials at both the seedling and adult stages discovered 593 loci related to stripe rust resistance (P ≤ 0.0001). These loci exhibited contribution rates ranging from 11.1% to 18.7%. Among them, 71 were significantly related to resistance against CYR32 at the seedling stage, with a contribution rate of 12.7%-17.2%. Constituting the vast majority, 518 loci distributed across 21 chromosomes were significantly related to CYR33 at the seedling stage, with a contribution rate of 12.6%-18.7%. Fewer loci were found to be associated with disease resistance in adult plants. In E1 environment, a sole locus was detected on chromosome 2B with a contribution rate of 14.4%. In E2 environment, however, exhibited three loci across chromosomes 2B, 4A, and 7B with contribution rates ranging from 11.1% to 16.9%. A total of 68 multi-effect loci were significantly related to resistance against both CYR32 and CYR33 at the seedling stage, and one stable locus was significantly associated with stripe rust resistance at the adult plant stage.

The anti-scaling agent poly(aspartic acidic) (PASP) polymers had became a hot research topic based on its peptide bond structures with degradation characteristics. However, it was difficult to control the chain length distributions of the synthesized products, which led to difficulty in determining the scaling mechanism for the peptide bond products. In this paper, PASP/8AC graft modified polymers with a narrow dispersity (Ð) and controllable chain lengths was synthesized via a simple two-step method, and 8-aminooctanoic acid (8AC) was introduced into the peptide bond structure of PASP with main chain lengths of 12. The effects of the side-chain lengths and functional groups on the scale inhibition mechanism were determined. The static scale inhibition results showed that the grafted products had significantly improved scale inhibition efficiencies at low concentrations and good temperature and time stabilities. The inhibition rate for CaSO4 scaling was increased by almost 60 % at a concentration of 3 mg/L. At 5 mg/L, the inhibition rate for CaCO3 scaling was increased by 36 %. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) showed that side chain length extensions improved calcium ion chelation by the PASP and increased calcium scale lattice distortion. This study verified the effects of side chains on PASP scale inhibition and its mechanism. This is of great importance in designing new green water treatment agents.

Abstract Background Mpox virus (MPXV), previously known as monkeypox virus, has spread globally in 2022. An accurate and convenient antibody test is essential for the determination of seroprevalence and for studying immune response after natural infection or vaccination. Most seroprevalence or vaccine studies used either live MPXV (or vaccinia virus [VACV]) or inactivated MPXV (or VACV) culture lysate for serological assays, but MPXV culture can only be performed in biosafety level 3 (BSL-3) facilities. Here, we developed and evaluated an enzyme immunoassay (EIA) based on the MPXV A29 surface envelope protein. Methods We compared the specificity of the MPXV A29, VACV A27, and VACV lysate EIA using serum specimens collected prior to the global spread of MPXV. Next, we performed these EIAs for serum specimens collected from two mpox patients and an MVA-BN vaccine recipient. We also assessed the kinetics of plasmblast and MPXV A29-specific B-cell response. Results Using sera collected from different age groups in Hong Kong, we found that most individuals, including those born before 1981 who have received the smallpox vaccine, tested negative using the MPXV A29 protein. MPXV A29-specific antibody could be detected in the serum of mpox patients and an MVA-BN recipient. In a mpox patient, the frequency of plasmablast and MPXV A29-specific B cell peaked on day 8 post-symptom onset and gradually decreased. Finally, we demonstrated that antibodies against the A29 protein can be used for immunofluorescence staining of MPXV-infected cells. Conclusions MPXV A29 protein is suitable for studying the immune response against MPXV infection.

Abstract Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients are at higher risk of severe COVID-19. Humoral and cellular immunity from prior infection or vaccination are important for protection, but the neutralizing antibody (nAb) response against SARS-CoV-2 variants is impaired. We investigated the variant-specific nAb and T cell immunity among CKD patients. Adult CKD patients were recruited between August and October 2022. nAb against the SARS-CoV-2 (ancestral strains and four Omicron sublineages) and T cell response were measured using the live virus neutralization assay and interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA). The correlation between nAb/T-cell response and subsequent infection after recruitment were also determined. Among the 88 recruited patients, 95.5% had prior infection or had completed the primary vaccine series. However, only 77.3% had detectable nAb against at least one SARS-CoV-2 strains, 59.1% tested positive in IGRA, and 52.3% had detectable nAb and tested positive in the IGRA. The nAb geometic mean titers (GMTs) against XBB.1, BA.5 and BA.2.3.20 were significantly lower than those against BA.2 and ancestral strain. Prior SARS-CoV-2 infection was associated with elevated nAb and T cell response. More kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) showed absent nAb and T cell response (36.8% vs. 10.1%), despite a higher prevalence of vaccine booster in this population (94.7% vs. 50.7%). Lower levels of nAb titer and T cell response were significantly associated with subsequent infection. A considerable proportion of CKD patients, especially KTRs, showed absence of humoral and cellular protective immunity against SARS-CoV-2. Strategies to improve immunogenicity in this population are urgently needed.

Objective Research on proximal fractures in the humeral bicipital groove (BG), a region in which bones are not commonly fractured, is considered sparse in the literature. The objective of this research was to present the definite characteristics and distribution of BG fractures. Methods This retrospective study included and enrolled 119 proximal humeral fractures in adult patients with complete radiography data to identify the fracture distribution in the BG from January 2021 to August 2021. The bicipital region was divided into three parts, i.e. the upper 1/3, middle 1/3, and lower 1/3 of the BG, and the distribution of fracture lines was transcribed on the male or female template, as appropriate. In addition, the normal contralateral humerus was used to calculate the cortical thickness of the supratubercular groove and different parts of the BG (upper, middle, and lower parts). The Mann–Whitney test or one‐way ANOVA along with LSD tests were used to determine differences in the fracture distribution and cortical thickness between men and women. Results Fractures of the BG in both men and women were mainly located in the upper 2/3 region of the BG, especially in the middle 1/3 of the BG. There were significant differences in the cortical thickness of the BG in men compared with that in women. The cortical thickness was highest in the supratubercular ridge but not the BG in men and women, respectively. Conclusion This research concluded that bony BG fractures were always observed in the middle part of the BG and were mainly found in patients with four fractures of the proximal humerus. As a unique fracture pattern, the existence of a bony BG fracture always means that a patient has been injured by a relatively severe mechanism, and more attention should be given to these proximal humeral fractures.

The majority of acromegaly and gigantism are caused by growth hormone-secreting pituitary neuroendocrine tumors (PitNETs). Most cases can be cured or controlled by surgery, medical therapy, and/or radiotherapy. However, a few of these tumors are resistant to traditional therapy and always have a poor prognosis. The title aggressive/refractory is used to differentiate them from pituitary carcinomas. To date, there is no definitive conclusion on how to diagnose aggressive/refractory growth hormone-secreting PitNETs, which may have slowed the process of exploring new therapeutical strategies. We summarized the literature described diagnosis and treatment of the disease. Potential disease markers and prospective therapies were also included.

Proper water and fertilizer management strategies are essential for alfalfa cultivation in arid areas. However, at present, the optimal amounts of subsurface irrigation and nitrogen (N) supply for alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) cultivation are still unclear. Therefore, a field experiment was conducted in 2022 in Yinchuan, Ningxia, China, to explore the effects of different subsurface irrigation levels (W1, 50% of ETC (crop evapotranspiration); W2, 75% of ETC; W3, 100% of ETC) and N application rates (N0, 0 kg/ha; N1, 75 kg/ha; N2, 150 kg/ha; N3, 225 kg/ha; N4, 300 kg/ha) on alfalfa yield, crop water productivity (CWP), N use efficiency (NUE), quality, and economic benefits. Besides, the least squares method and multiple regression analysis were used to explore the optimal water and N combination for alfalfa cultivation under subsurface irrigation. The results showed that the alfalfa yield, crude ash content, and partial factor productivity from applied N (PFPN) were the highest under W2 level, but there was no difference in PFPN compared with that under W3 level. The branch number (BN), leaf area index (LAI), yield, CWP, irrigation water productivity (IWP), crude protein content (CPC), and economic benefits increased and then decreased with the increase of N application rate, reaching a maximum at the N2 or N3 level, while the NUE and PFPN decreased with the increase of N application rate. Considering the yield, CWP, NUE, quality, and economic benefits, W2N2 treatment was the optimal for alfalfa cultivation under subsurface irrigation. Besides, when the irrigation volume and N application rate were 69.8 ~ 88.7% of ETC and 145 ~ 190 kg/ha, respectively (confidence interval: 85%), the yield, CPC, and economic benefits reached more than 85% of the maximum. This study will provide technique reference for the water and N management in alfalfa cultivation in Northwest China.

In view of the problem that the functions of the current privacy protection data aggregation scheme were insufficient to meet the increasingly rich application requirements, a multi-function supported privacy protection data aggregation (MFPDA) scheme for V2G network was proposed.By using cryptographic algorithms such as BGN, BLS, and Shamir’s secret sharing, as well as fog computing and consortium blockchain technology, multiple security functions like fault tolerance, resistance to internal attacks, batch signature verification, no need for trusted third parties, and multiple aggregation functions were integrated into one privacy protection data aggregation scheme.Security analysis shows that the proposed scheme can protect data aggregation’s security, privacy and reliability.The performance evaluation shows that the introduction of fog computing can significantly reduce the computing overhead of the control center, and the reduction rate can be as high as 66.6%; the improvement of the consortium blockchain can effectively reduce the communication and storage overhead of the system, and the reduction rate can reach 16.7% and 24.9% respectively.

Objectives The policy of the standardized workload has been implemented among primary and secondary schoolteachers in Shanxi Province. The aim of this cross-sectional cohort study is to assess teacher stress among primary and secondary schoolteachers in Datong, a city of Shanxi Province and the association between teacher stress and the quantified workload. Material and Methods Three hundred and fifty schoolteachers in 10 public primary schools, 187 schoolteachers in 6 secondary schools and 268 non-teachers in 21 education institutes were recruited. A single-item rating assessment of work-related stress was completed by using the Exposure to Job Stress measure with modification. The quantified workload included class size, teaching hours, and subjects. Descriptive and logistic regression analyses were carried out. Results In 805 participants, the pro- portion of primary and secondary schoolteachers with moderate stress was significantly greater. The results of Spearman’s correlation and logistic regression analyses showed that the occupations of the primary and secondary schoolteachers had higher stress risk. Further, the stratified results showed that among the primary schoolteachers, the independent stress risk factor was larger class size; while among the secondary schoolteachers, the stress associated factor was more weekly teaching hours. Conclusions After standardization of the workload, there remain higher levels of work stress among primary and secondary schoolteachers. The development of deep learning greatly promotes the progress of speaker verification (SV). Studies show that both convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and dilated time-delay neural networks (TDNNs) achieve advanced performance in text-independent SV, due to their ability to sufficiently extract the local feature and the temporal contextual information, respectively. Also, the combination of the above two has achieved better results. However, we found a serious gridding effect when we apply the 1D-Res2Net-based dilated TDNN proposed in ECAPA-TDNN for SV, which indicates discontinuity and local information losses of frame-level features. To achieve high-resolution process for speaker embedding, we improve the CNN–TDNN structure with proposed repeated multi-scale feature fusions. Through the proposed structure, we can effectively improve the channel utilization of TDNN and achieve higher performance under the same TDNN channel. And, unlike previous studies that have all converted CNN features to TDNN features directly, we also studied the latent space transformation between CNN and TDNN to achieve efficient conversion. Our best method obtains 0.72 EER and 0.0672 MinDCF on VoxCeleb-O test set, and the proposed method performs better in cross-domain SV without additional parameters and computational complexity.

Nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems hold promise for cancer treatment by enhancing the solubility and stability of anti-tumor drugs. Nonetheless, the challenges of inadequate targeting and limited biocompatibility persist. In recent years, cell membrane nano-biomimetic drug delivery systems have emerged as a focal point of research and development, due to their exceptional traits, including precise targeting, low toxicity, and good biocompatibility. This review outlines the categorization and advantages of cell membrane bionic nano-delivery systems, provides an introduction to preparation methods, and assesses their applications in cancer treatment, including chemotherapy, gene therapy, immunotherapy, photodynamic therapy, photothermal therapy, and combination therapy. Notably, the review delves into the challenges in the application of various cell membrane bionic nano-delivery systems and identifies opportunities for future advancement. Embracing cell membrane-coated biomimetic nanoparticles presents a novel and unparalleled avenue for personalized tumor therapy.

BackgroundDevelopment of physical and cognitive function is very critical in 4~5 years children. It has been addressed in this research if the 18 weeks of specific functional training with or without cognitive training can be effective on improving fitness and cognitive development in 4~5 years preschool children.MethodsA total of 126 preschool children in the 4~5 age range were selected as participants and randomly assigned to one of four groups: the control group (C), the functional physical training group (P), the cognitive training group (CT), and the functional physical training combined with cognitive training group (PCT).ResultsThe results revealed significant pre/post differences in body height and weight among all four groups of children. Furthermore, there was no significant difference in physical fitness between the C group and the CT group after the intervention. However, the children in the P group and the PCT group showed significant improvements in three indicators including standing long jump, continuous jump, and 10-meter shuttle running. Additionally, the children in P group, CT group, and the PCT group demonstrated significant improvement in simple reaction time, attention, and spatial memory. No significant cognitive improvement was found in C group.ConclusionFunctional physical training with or without cognitive intervention can promote both physical fitness and cognitive development in children aged 4~5 years. Cognitive training alone can significantly improve cognitive function but not physical. Therefore, functional physical training can be used alone to improve the physical and cognitive abilities for aged 4~5 years old children.

Abstract. Background:. Sepsis is a serious disease caused by infection. Aminophylline has anti-asthma and anti-inflammatory effects. We aimed to explore the safety and effect of aminophylline in sepsis. Methods:. We conducted a clinical randomized controlled trial involving 100 patients diagnosed with sepsis within 48 h after intensive care unit (ICU) admission in two sites. All patients were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to receive standard therapy with or without aminophylline. The primary clinical outcome was all-cause mortality at 28 days. Results:. From September 27, 2018 to February 12, 2020, we screened 277 septic patients and eventually enrolled 100 patients, with 50 assigned to the aminophylline group and 50 to the usual-care group. At 28 days, 7 of 50 patients (14.0%) in the aminophylline group had died, compared with 16 of 50 (32.0%) in the usual-care group (P = 0.032). Cox regression showed that the aminophylline group had a lower hazard of death (hazard ratio = 0.312, 95% confidence interval: 0.129–0.753). Compared with the usual-care group, patients in the aminophylline group had a longer survival time (P = 0.039 by the log-rank test). The effects of aminophylline on vasopressor dose, oxygenation index, and sequential organ failure assessment score were time-dependent with treatment. There were no significant differences in total hospitalization days, ICU hospitalization days, and rates of serious adverse events (all P > 0.05). No adverse events were observed in the trial. Conclusions:. Aminophylline as an adjunct therapy could significantly reduce the risk of death and prolong the survival time of patients with sepsis. Trial registration:. The intrinsic terminator in prokaryotic forms secondary RNA structure and terminates the transcription. However, leaking transcription is common due to varied terminator strength. Besides of the representative hairpin and U-tract structure, detailed sequence and thermodynamic features of terminators were not completely clear, and the effect of terminator on the upstream gene expression was unclearly. Thus, it is still challenging to use terminator to control expression with higher precision. Here, in E. Coli, we firstly determined the effect of the 3′-end sequences including spacer sequences and terminator sequences on the expression of upstream and downstream genes. Secondly, terminator mutation library was constructed, and the thermodynamic and sequence features differing in the termination efficiency were analyzed using the FlowSeq technique. The result showed that under the regulation of terminators, a negative correlation was presented between the expression of upstream and downstream genes (r=−0.60), and the terminators with lower free energy corelated with higher upstream gene expression. Meanwhile, the terminator with longer stem length, more compact loop and perfect U-tract structure was benefit to the transcription termination. Finally, a terminator strength classification model was established, and the verification experiment based on 20 synthetic terminators indicated that the model can distinguish strong and weak terminators to certain extent. The results help to elucidate the role of terminators in gene expression, and the key factors identified are crucial for rational design of terminators, and the model provided a method for terminator strength prediction.

The SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant has led to a major wave of COVID-19 in Hong Kong between January and May 2022. Here, we used seroprevalence to estimate the combined incidence of vaccination and SARS-CoV-2 infection, including subclinical infection which were not diagnosed at the acute stage. The overall seropositive rate of IgG against receptor binding domain (anti-RBD IgG) increased from 52.2% in December 2021 to 89.3% in May 2022. The level of anti-RBD IgG was lowest in the 0–9 and ≥80 year-old age groups in May 2022. The seropositive rate of antibody against ORF8, which reflects the rate of prior infection, was 23.4% in May 2022. Our data suggest that although most individuals were either vaccinated or infected after the fifth wave, children and older adults remain most vulnerable. Public health measures should target these age groups in order to ameliorate the healthcare consequences of upcoming waves.

Abstract To evaluate the clinical therapeutic effects of a technique in which biological amniotic membranes (bAMs) are used in the treatment of patients with recurrent macular holes. In this prospective nonrandomized case series study, 23 eyes of 23 patients with recurrent macular holes who had already undergone surgery with pars plana vitrectomy with internal limiting membrane peeling were evaluated. In the surgery, a bAM was used to cover the macular area, and C3F8 tamponade was performed on these patients. Phacoemulsification combined with intraocular lens implantation was performed simultaneously in patients who had cataracts. Patients were followed up for at least half a year. The main outcomes were whether the macular hole closed, the morphological changes in the macular graft, the best-corrected visual acuity, intraocular pressure (IOP) and other indicators. In all eyes, the recurrent macular holes were closed. Two cases (8.69%, 2/23) had bAM shifting half a month after surgery, and these patients underwent a second surgery to adjust the position of the bAM and perform C3F8 tamponade. In the 6-month follow-up, 21 patients (91.30%, 21/23) had improved visual acuity (VA), and 2 patients (8.69%, 2/23) had no change in VA. The mean VA increased from 1.73 ± 0.32 before surgery to 1.12 ± 0.42 after surgery (t = 10.63, P = 0.00

The clinical outcomes of cancer nanovaccine have been largely impeded owing to the low antigen-specific T cell response rate and acquired resistance caused by the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME). Here, we reported a tumor acidity-responsive nanovaccine to remodel the immunosuppressive TME and expand the recruitment of tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) using hybrid micelles (HM), which encapsulated colony stimulating factor 1 receptor (CSF1-R) inhibitor BLZ-945 and indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) inhibitor NLG-919 in its core and displayed a model antigen ovalbumin (OVA) on its surface (denoted as BN@HM-OVA). The bioactive nanovaccine is coated with a polyethylene glycol (PEG) shell for extending nanoparticle circulation. The shell can be shed in response to the weakly acidic tumor microenvironment. The decrease in size and the increase in positive charge may cause the deep tumor penetration of drugs. We demonstrated that the bioactive nanovaccine dramatically enhance antigen presentation by dendritic cells (DCs) and drugs transportation into M1-like tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) and tumor cells via size reduction and increasing positive charge caused by the weakly acidic TME. Such bioactive nanovaccine could remodel the immunosuppressive TME into an effector T cells favorable environment, leading to tumor growth inhibition in prophylactic and therapeutic E.G7-OVA tumor models. Furthermore, combining the bioactive nanovaccine with simultaneous anti-PD-1 antibody treatment leads to a long-term tumor inhibition, based on the optimal timing and sequence of PD-1 blockade against T cell receptor. This research provides a new strategy for the development of efficient cancer immunotherapy.

Objective:. The optimal percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) technique for bifurcation lesions remains controversial, especially considering the variability of the side branch (SB). A provisional stenting technique is currently recommended in most cases. This meta-analysis aimed to compare outcomes of different bifurcation PCI strategies, clarifying their scope of application. Methods:. Randomized controlled trials comparing PCI strategies for coronary bifurcation lesions were systematically retrieved from PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science, and EBSCO literature databases without limitations on published date or language. Major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) were stipulated as main outcomes. Secondary outcomes of interest were all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, target lesion revascularization (TLR), target vessel revascularization, myocardial infarction (MI), and stent thrombosis. Both pooled analysis and sub-group analysis were performed. Results:. Twenty-three randomized controlled trials with 6380 participants were included. Eighteen studies compared the provisional strategy with 2-stent approaches. No significant difference in MACEs (relative risk (RR), 1.16; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.90–1.48; I2 = 62%) was found between 1-stent and 2-stent techniques. However, when SB lesion length was used as the separation condition, the 2-stent strategy was associated with fewer MACEs (RR, 1.87; 95% CI, 1.46–2.41; I2 = 70%), TLRs (RR, 2.13; 95% CI, 1.50–3.02; I2 = 59%), and MIs (RR, 2.17; 95% CI, 1.19–3.95; I2 = 52%) than the provisional strategy in those where SB lesions measured >10 mm long. Conclusions:. In the current work, there was no significant difference between 1-stent and 2-stent techniques in terms of MACEs or secondary outcomes. However, 2-stent approaches have clinical advantages over the provisional strategy in bifurcation when the SB lesion length is >10 mm due to fewer cases of TLR and MI.

Objective Edelson classification is a 3D classification of proximal humeral fractures, but there is a scarcity of application of this classification in large samples, and the accuracy of classification was also not testified. The objective of this research was to verify whether a revised Edelson classification produces satisfactory agreement for proximal humeral fracture classification in adult patients. Methods A total of 827 proximal humeral fractures (304 male and 520 female patients, 58.0 ± 16.2 years) were found retrospectively from January 2014 to December 2019, and classified according to the traditional and newly proposed Edelson classification. The three‐dimensional CT images were processed, rotated and visualized within software. Five shoulder surgeons classified each fracture. After data collection, radiographic classifications results were compared by inter‐ and intraobserver analysis with the method of weighted kappa coefficients. Fracture classification based on Edelson and revised Edelson classification was presented and compared. Results The mean k value for the interobserver reliability was 0.748 (range, 0.583 to 0.958) compared with Edelson classification (0.548, range, 0.48 to 0.635), indicating satisfactory agreement. The mean k value for intraobserver reliability was 0.906 (range, 0.823 to 0.943) compared with Edelson classification (0.762, range, 0.666 to 0.808), indicating excellent agreement when using the newly revised Edelson classification. The mechanism was categorized as the shoulder being in a position of forward flexion, abduction, and internal rotation in Edelson I‐IV and bicipital fractures. For the greater tuberosity fracture, the mechanism was classified into two mechanisms based on the presence of a combined dislocation. Bicipital groove fracture is a commonly observed fracture pattern, and included in the revised Edelson classification. Conclusions The revised Edelson classification proposed was more in line with the injury mechanism of the fracture, was beneficial in identifying more fracture types such as bicipital groove fracture, and verified to be a good proximal humeral fracture classification with good reliability compared with the traditional Edelson classification.

Background and objective: Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations are often associated with non-EGFR genetic alterations, which may be a reason for the poor efficacy of EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). Here we conducted this study to explore whether EGFR-TKIs combined with chemotherapy would benefit advanced lung adenocarcinoma patients with both sensitive EGFR mutation and concomitant non-EGFR genetic alterations. Materials and methods: Cases of advanced lung adenocarcinoma with EGFR mutation combined with concomitant non-EGFR genetic alterations were retrospectively collected. And the patients were required to receive first-line EGFR-TKIs and chemotherapy combination or EGFR-TKIs monotherapy. Demographic, clinical and pathological data were collected, and the electronic imaging data were retrieved to evaluate the efficacy and time of disease progression. Survival data were obtained through face-to-face or telephone follow-up. The differences between the two groups in objective response rate (ORR), disease control rate (DCR), progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were investigated. Results: 107 patients were included, including 63 cases in the combination group and 44 cases in the monotherapy group. The ORR were 78% and 50% (P=0.003), and DCR were 97% and 77% (P=0.002), respectively. At a median follow-up of 13.7 mon, a PFS event occurred in 38.1% and 81.8% of patients in the two groups, with median PFS of 18.8 mon and 5.3 mon, respectively (P

BackgroundSepsis is a clinical syndrome with high mortality. Subtype identification in sepsis is meaningful for improving the diagnosis and treatment of patients. The purpose of this research was to identify subtypes of sepsis using RNA-seq datasets and further explore key genes that were deregulated during the development of sepsis.MethodsThe datasets GSE95233 and GSE13904 were obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. Differential analysis of the gene expression matrix was performed between sepsis patients and healthy controls. Intersection analysis of differentially expressed genes was applied to identify common differentially expressed genes for enrichment analysis and gene set variation analysis. Obvious differential pathways between sepsis patients and healthy controls were identified, as were developmental stages during sepsis. Then, key dysregulated genes were revealed by short time-series analysis and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator model. In addition, the MCPcounter package was used to assess infiltrating immunocytes. Finally, the dysregulated genes identified were verified using 69 clinical samples.ResultsA total of 898 common differentially expressed genes were obtained, which were chiefly related to increased metabolic responses and decreased immune responses. The two differential pathways (angiogenesis and myc targets v2) were screened on the basis of gene set variation analysis scores. Four subgroups were identified according to median expression of angiogenesis and myc target v2 genes: normal, myc target v2, mixed-quiescent, and angiogenesis. The genes CHPT1, CPEB4, DNAJC3, MAFG, NARF, SNX3, S100A9, S100A12, and METTL9 were recognized as being progressively dysregulated in sepsis. Furthermore, most types of immune cells showed low infiltration in sepsis patients and had a significant correlation with the key genes. Importantly, all nine key genes were highly expressed in sepsis patients.ConclusionThis study revealed novel insight into sepsis subtypes and identified nine dysregulated genes associated with immune status in the development of sepsis. This study provides potential molecular targets for the diagnosis and treatment of sepsis.

IntroductionTherapeutic monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein have been shown to improve the outcome of severe COVID-19 patients in clinical trials. However, novel variants with spike protein mutations can render many currently available mAbs ineffective.MethodsWe produced mAbs by using hybridoma cells that generated from mice immunized with spike protein trimer and receptor binding domain (RBD). The panel of mAbs were screened for binding and neutralizing activity against different SARS-CoV-2 variants. The in vivo effectiveness of WKS13 was evaluated in a hamster model.ResultsOut of 960 clones, we identified 18 mAbs that could bind spike protein. Ten of the mAbs could attach to RBD, among which five had neutralizing activity against the ancestral strain and could block the binding between the spike protein and human ACE2. One of these mAbs, WKS13, had broad neutralizing activity against all Variants of Concern (VOCs), including the Omicron variant. Both murine or humanized versions of WKS13 could reduce the lung viral load in hamsters infected with the Delta variant.ConclusionsOur data showed that broad-spectrum high potency mAbs can be produced from immunized mice, which can be used in humans after humanization of the Fc region. Our method represents a versatile and rapid strategy for generating therapeutic mAbs for upcoming novel variants.

The development of open government data has attracted interest from academics and practitioners. However, only a few studies have examined a culture-based account of open government data development. This study empirically investigates the impact of national culture on open government data. Through the data investigation and analysis of 55 countries, this research finds that the development of open government data is positively linked with national culture with respect to individualism, indulgence and long-term orientation and is negatively related to power distance. Furthermore, this study shows that economic development moderates the relationship between national culture and open government data development, especially with respect to individualism and long-term orientation. Practically, the findings of this research can help policymakers better understand the multifaceted impacts of national culture on the development of open government data, including the promotion of cultural values (i.e. high individualism, high indulgence, and high long-term orientation) and the change in the passive and conservative attitude of citizens toward the openness of government data in countries where power distance culture is high.

Random lasers (RLs), which possess peculiar advantages (e.g., emission and coherence tunable) over traditional lasers with optical resonators, have witnessed rapid development in the past decades. However, it is still a challenge to tune the lasing peak of an RL over a wide range. Here, a temperature-dependent Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) RL is demonstrated in pyrromethene 597 (PM597, “donor”) and Nile blue (NB, “acceptor”) doped chiral liquid crystals. By changing the temperature that drives the liquid crystal bandgap shift, our RL device exhibits a lasing output change from 560 nm (yellow) to 700 nm (red). While the intrinsic FRET efficiency between PM597 and NB is relatively low, the red lasing is weak. By introducing gold nanorods (GNRs) into these RL devices and utilizing GNRs’ localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect, the efficiency of FRET transfer is increased by 68.9%, thereby reducing the threshold of the RL devices. By tuning the longitudinal LSPR to match the emission wavelength of NB, the best 200-fold lasing intensity enhancement is recorded. Our findings open a pathway toward realizing LSPR-enhanced FRET tunable RLs and broaden the range of their possible exploration in photonics research and technologies.

Noise suppression is essential in time-domain electromagnetic (TDEM) data processing and interpretation. TDEM data are typically in broadband signal, which makes it difficult to separate the signal in the whole frequency band. The conventional methods tend to process data trace by trace, ignoring the lateral continuity between channels. This paper proposes a workflow based on multivariate variational mode decomposition (MVMD) and multivariate detrended fluctuation analysis (MDFA) to deal with the noise in 2-D TDEM data. The proposed method initially employs MVMD to decompose TDEM signals into a series of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). Subsequently, MDFA is used to calculate the scaling exponent of each IMF, facilitating the selection of signal-dominant IMFs. Finally, the signal IMFs are summed up to reconstruct the TDEM signal. Both simulation and field results demonstrate that, by considering the lateral continuity of data across channels, the proposed method is more effective at noise removal than other single-channel data processing techniques.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) exhibit a wide range of quasiperiodic variations and are crucial for our understanding of the cyclical evolution of large-scale magnetic fields. However, the mid-term periodicities of different types of CMEs associated with different processes at the source location need to be clearly understood. Based on the CDAW catalog released by the Large Angle and Spectroscopic Coronagraph mission on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, we investigated the period of CMEs based on the speeds and accelerations using the continuous wavelet transformation method. Our results revealed that the distribution of CMEs over time is quite distinctly different for different speeds, and there are Rieger-type periods and quasi-biennial oscillations of the CMEs. The two types of periodic signals show significant differences in solar cycles 23 and 24. Furthermore, the periodicity patterns for the northern hemisphere differ from those in the southern hemisphere. The potential mechanisms and explanations of the results are also discussed.

The hemispheric asymmetry of solar activity is one of the essential physical consequences of the interior dynamo process. However, the hemispheric distribution of halo coronal mass ejection (HCME) source locations has not been investigated in detail. Based on the HCME catalog identified from the Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph Experiment on board the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, we perform a hemispheric distribution analysis of the HCME source locations from 1996 April to 2022 June. The main results are as follows. (1) The HCME source locations are confined to the active region belt, and there is no “rush to the poles” phenomenon that is unique to large-scale magnetic activity. (2) The HCME source locations exhibit a general hemispheric asymmetry, and autoregressive moving-average model results show that the asymmetry of HCME source locations is significantly different from that of sunspot activity. (3) The hemispheric distribution of cycle 24 is different from that of cycle 23, potentially as a result of the heliospheric dynamic pressure having noticeably decreased after the polarity reversal of cycle 23. Our results contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the hemispheric asymmetry of energetic magnetic structures and give a new perspective on understanding the geoeffectiveness of HCMEs.

The time-domain electromagnetic (TDEM) method is acknowledged for its simplicity in setup and non-intrusive detection capabilities, particularly within shallow subsurface detection methodologies. However, extant TDEM systems encounter constraints when detecting intricate topographies and hazardous zones. The rapid evolution in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology has engendered the inception of UAV-based time-domain electromagnetic systems, thereby augmenting detection efficiency while mitigating potential risks associated with human casualties. This study introduces the UAV-TDEM system designed explicitly for discerning shallow subsurface targets. The system comprises a UAV platform, a host system, and sensors that capture the electromagnetic response of the area while concurrently recording real-time positional data. This study also proposes a processing technique rooted in robust local mean decomposition (RLMD) and approximate entropy (ApEn) methodology to address noise within the original data. Initially, the RLMD decomposes the original data to extract residuals alongside multiple product functions (PFs). Subsequently, the residual is combined with various PFs to yield several cumulative sums, wherein the approximate entropy of these cumulative sums is computed, and the resulting output signals are filtered using a predetermined threshold. Ultimately, the YOLOv8 (You Only Look Once version 8) network is employed to extract anomalous regions. The proposed denoising method can process data within one second, and the trained YOLOv8 network achieves an accuracy rate of 99.0% in the test set. Empirical validation through multiple flight tests substantiates the efficiency of UAV-TDEM in detecting targets situated up to 1 m below the surface. Both simulated and measured data corroborate the proposed workflow’s effectiveness in mitigating noise and identifying targets.

Abstract Limited researches focused on the application of laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) in locally advanced gastric cancer (LAGC) patients following neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT). In this study, we aimed at illustrating the surgical and survival outcome of LG in LAGC patients following NACT. We performed a retrospective study of patients with LAGC who received either LG following NACT or upfront LG at Fujian Provincial Hospital between March 2013 and October 2018. Perioperative parameters, short-term and long-term outcomes were compared. The Kaplan–Meier estimator was used to describe the survival curves, and the differences were examined by the log-rank test. In total, 76 consecutive patients were enrolled into the NACT-LG (41 patients) and LG (35 patients) group. The postoperative hospital stay was significantly longer for LG than for NACT-LG (11.0 vs. 12.0 day, P = 0.031). Significant difference was found in Grade ≥ III severe postoperative complications in two groups (0 vs. 17.1%, P = 0.001). No patient died of postoperative complications in the NACT-LG group, and one patient (1/35, 2.9%) died of postoperative complications in the LG group. A forest plot revealed that most subgroups of LG group were at great risks of postoperative complications. Compared with the LG group, the NACT-LG group had a significantly better DFS (14.4% vs. 5.7%, P = 0.0299) and better OS (34.1% vs. 8.6%, P = 0.0061) at 3 years. NACT increased the safety of LG for patients with LAGC and offer better disease-free and overall survival. For patients with LAGC, LG following NACT should be the priority treatment.

With economic and social globalization, invasive alien species have significantly threatened local ecological security. Identifying the invasive mechanisms of invasive alien species can aid in preventing species invasions and protecting local ecological and economic security. As a globally invasive plant, Ageratina adenophora (Asteraceae) has spread to many parts of the world and had a seriously impacted the ecology and economy of its invaded areas. Using observational data and Landsat OLI images in an arid valley region in southwest China, this study examined how climate, human activity and environmental factors influence the invasion of A. adenophora and its underlying mechanism. Our results showed that the invasion abundance of A. adenophora was significantly affected by environmental factors (the relative importance was 87.2%), but was less influenced by human activity and climate factors (the relative importance was 2% and 10.8%, respectively). The A. adenophora abundance significantly decreased with aspect, community canopy density, shrub layer coverage, herb layer coverage, Simpson diversity index of shrub and herb layers, the shortest distance to residential areas and temperature seasonality, whereas it increased with soil moisture, temperature annual range, precipitation of wettest month and precipitation of driest month. We conclude that biotic competition is the most influential factor in the invasion of this plant in the arid valley regions. Our results are of great significance for invasion prevention and forest conservation and management in southwest China. Our work emphasized that optimizing the community structure, such as by increasing canopy and shrub coverage and species biodiversity, may help control and mitigate the A. adenophora invasion in southwest China.

ObjectivesThe inflammatory response caused by gastric cancer surgery and the low nutritional status of patients with gastric cancer can cause growth of tumour cells, reduce immunity, and increase tumour burden. We investigated the effects of different surgical methods on postoperative inflammatory response and nutritional status in patients with distal gastric cancer.MethodsClinical data of 249 patients who underwent radical distal gastrectomy for distal gastric cancer from February 2014 to April 2017 were retrospectively analysed. Patients were divided according to the surgical method (open distal gastrectomy [ODG], laparoscopic-assisted distal gastrectomy [LADG] and total laparoscopic distal gastrectomy [TLDG]). Abstract There are many kinds of materials or methods used to make optical microcavities, and they have many different geometric structures. And electrospinning technique has become a very convenient and easy one to prepare polymer fiber. Based on this situation, PM597-doped polymer solution was prepared into high-performance fibers with different diameters by electrospinning technology in our work. In order to better study the temperature sensing of polymer fiber whispering gallery mode, we have placed it on two different substrates with gold and aluminum. A 532 nm pulsed laser beam was used to excite a single fiber in the radial direction, then the whispering gallery mode (WGM) laser was observed and the distribution of WGM was determined by theoretical calculations. The threshold of samples on aluminum substrate is 0.4 μJ. In addition, it is found that the samples on aluminum substrate performed better in temperature sensing, and the value is 0.13 nm/°C. As a result, WGM polymer fiber microcavities on aluminum substrate made by electrospinning technology have very broad development prospects in biosensing, optical pump lasers and other applications.
