In order to study the quality of inulin sausage that influenced through pomegranate powder and tea polyphenols to substitute partly nitrite, firstly, according to the cooking loss, color and texture properties of sausage assured appropriate inulin. Secondly, the process conditions and recipe were optimized by single factor experiments and orthogonal tests, used the pH value, the red-value, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), hardness, and sodium nitrite residue as evaluation metric. The results showed that while the addition levels of inulin, pomegranate powder, nitrite and tea polyphenols were 6%, 3%, 60 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg, could got a product with high red-value, low pH value, low lipid oxidation, low residue of nitrite and better sensory quality. In addition, the study results showed that inulin 6%, pomegranate powder 3%, and 300 mg/kg tea polyphenols could be used as substitute for sixty percent of the nitrite, so that the addition and residue of nitrite was effectively decreased. As a result, the food safety, color, and anti-oxidative capacity of the product were both enhanced, provided a theoretical foundation for developing nitrite-low and low fat meat.

Abstract Sintering of active metal species often happens during catalytic reactions, which requires redispersion in a reactive atmosphere at elevated temperatures to recover the activity. Herein, we report a simple method to redisperse sintered Cu catalysts via O2-H2O treatment at room temperature. In-situ spectroscopic characterizations reveal that H2O induces the formation of hydroxylated Cu species in humid O2, pushing surface diffusion of Cu atoms at room temperature. Further, surface OH groups formed on most hydroxylable support surfaces such as γ-Al2O3, SiO2, and CeO2 in the humid atmosphere help to pull the mobile Cu species and enhance Cu redispersion. Both pushing and pulling effects of gaseous H2O promote the structural transformation of Cu aggregates into highly dispersed Cu species at room temperature, which exhibit enhanced activity in reverse water gas shift and preferential oxidation of carbon monoxide reactions. These findings highlight the important role of H2O in the dynamic structure evolution of supported metal nanocatalysts and lay the foundation for the regeneration of sintered catalysts under mild conditions.

Rice is the most important staple crop for more than half of the world's population. As rice quality can deteriorate during storage, methods that can effectively classify rice according to its storage duration are essential. However, existing methods of assessing rice storage time are time-consuming, laborious, and incompatible with modern industrial processing technologies. Therefore, we investigated the ability of near-infrared spectroscopy combined with machine learning algorithms to distinguish rice storage duration. A total of 482 rice samples were analyzed, which included 74, 100, and 308 samples produced during 2015–2016, 2017–2018, and 2020–2021, respectively. Five pre-processing methods were initially applied to the spectra to enhance the accuracy of the discrimination model. Subsequently, two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy and competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS) were used to extract the characteristic spectra associated with storage time. Finally, three pattern recognition methods (K-nearest neighbor analysis, linear discriminant analysis, and least squares support vector machine (LS-SVM)) were compared for their effectiveness in constructing classification models. The results indicated that the best model for identifying the storage duration of rice was established after spectral pre-processing with the standard normal variate and first derivative, using the CARS algorithm to select feature wavelengths, and applying the LS-SVM modeling method, which together yielded correct identification rates of 99.72 % and 91.67 % for the calibration and validation sets, respectively. Thus, we propose near-infrared spectroscopy coupled with machine learning algorithms as an effective approach for classifying rice according to storage duration, which can facilitate evaluations of rice freshness in the market.

Renal calculi weighing over 200 g are relative rare in modern urological practice since most stones might cause renal dysfunction before reaching such size. We here reported an extremely rare case of giant stones in single kidney of a 72-year-old Chinese male patient who had 30 years long-term history of lithiasis in the right kidney. These huge kidney stones, total weight 832.6 g were successfully removed with multiple sessions of surgery. Kidney function was relatively stable after long-term medical care in primary care centers. Timely treatment of kidney stones early should arouse more attention worldwide.

A 45-year-old woman presented with right hip pain for a month. Imaging results revealed that the left peritoneal mass was accompanied by metastases of the right sciatic branch, lung, and retroperitoneal lymph nodes. A biopsy of the left peritoneal mass was performed. The pathological morphology demonstrated clear cell adenocarcinoma. Immunohistochemical staining revealed a positive expression of keratin7 and PAX8 and a negative expression of keratin20, GCDFP-15, ER, PR, WT1, CDX2, villin, TTF-1, napsin-A, vimentin, calretinin, and GATA3. Finally, the diagnosis of primary retroperitoneal müllerian adenocarcinoma (PRMA) was confirmed. PRMA is a very rare type of primary retroperitoneal tumor. PRMA should be considered for the retroperitoneal mass.

Background and objectives: The efficacy of rituximab (RTX) in treating steroid-resistant Graves’ orbitopathy (GO) has been limitedly studied in Asians. Moreover, RTX has been considered even less for patients with steroid-resistant dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON) who failed to undergo orbital decompression surgery for physical or financial reasons, or who responded poorly to the procedure. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of RTX in treating steroid-resistant active moderate-to-severe and sight-threatening GO in a Chinese population. Methods: Data from 28 patients with steroid-resistant GO prescribed a single dose of 500 mg RTX were retrospectively retrieved. Treatment responses and contributing factors were analyzed. Results: The median follow-up time was 22 (8–34) weeks. 23 (82.1 %) patients had a positive objective outcome recommended by the European Group on Graves’ Orbitopathy (EUGOGO), while 25 (92.6 %) had a decrease in 7-item clinical activity score (CAS) by at least 2. Diplopia, visual dysfunction, and MRI-detected T2 relaxation time of the involved extraocular muscles improved significantly at the last follow-up compared to baseline (81.0 % vs. 47.6 %, 38.9 % vs. 16.7 %, and 87.8 (8.64) vs. 75.8 (10.9) ms, respectively; all p values

Coastal saline soils are an important soil resource that, when restored, can enhance arable land and preserve the natural ecology. With the aim of improving the use of coastal saline soils, we conducted a spot survey at Bohai coastal saline land to investigate the differences in soil properties between different vegetation types. The soil physical and chemical properties of various vegetation types, including Aeluropus sinensis, Imperata cylindrica, Tamarix chinensis, Lycium chinense, Hibiscus moscheutos, Helianthus annuus, Gossypium hirsutum, and Zea mays, were examined at two depth layers: 0–20 cm and 20–40 cm, and in two seasons, spring and autumn. The soil properties were compared with bare land as a control. The results indicated that the electrical conductivity, total soil salt content, sodium adsorption ratio, and bulk density of soils with vegetation cover were lower than those with bare land. On the other hand, soil pH, organic matter content, mean weight diameter, and saturated hydraulic conductivity were higher. The redundancy analysis results revealed a substantial positive correlation between soil pH, saturated hydraulic conductivity, water content, mean weight diameter, and organic matter content, as well as a significant positive correlation between soil electrical conductivity, total soil salt content, sodium adsorption ratio, and bulk density. Soil pH, saturated hydraulic conductivity, water content, mean weight diameter, organic matter content, and soil electrical conductivity, total soil salt content, sodium adsorption ratio, and bulk density were negatively correlated. The results of the structural equation model and variance decomposition showed that soil organic matter and bulk density were the key factors affecting the degree of soil salinization, and compared with their independent effects, their combined effect on soil salinization was greater. This study’s conclusions can provide a point of reference for further research on the mechanisms of soil improvement and desalinization in coastal saline land.

An investigation into the corrosion characteristics and mechanism of directionally solidified (DSed) Mg-3Zn-xCa (x = 0, 0.2, 0.5, 0.8 wt.%) alloys in 0.9 wt.% NaCl solution is presented. The DSed microstructure consists of columnar dendrites and eutectics distributed in the interdendritic region. The primary dendritic arm spacing (PDAS) and the volume fraction (fv) of the secondary phases are under the significant impact of the content of Ca. The corrosion rates evaluated using electrochemical measurements and immersion tests are accelerated monotonously with the increase of Ca content in DSed alloys. The corrosion resistance of the DSed alloys is significantly affected by the corrosion products film (CPF) and the secondary phases. The corrosion products of DSed Mg-3Zn alloy contain Mg(OH)2 and ZnO. The existence of ZnO greatly enhances the corrosion resistance of DSed Mg-3Zn alloy. As for the DSed alloys containing Ca content, a relatively protective CPF without deep pits can form on the surface of DSed Mg-3Zn-0.2Ca specimen during the corrosion. The fv of the secondary phases dominates the corrosion rate of the DSed Mg-Zn-Ca alloys. The corrosion of DSed Mg-3Zn-xCa alloys initiates as a result of micro-galvanic coupling between the cathodes of secondary phases and α-Mg matrix anode. Then, the corrosion gradually extends longitudinally with the breakdown of CPF.

Abstract Background Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is an independent risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Exendin-4 (Ex-4), a widely used glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist drug in the treatment of T2D, has been demonstrated the therapeutic effects on diabetic encephalopathy (DE). Especially, the Ex-4 ameliorates the tau hyperphosphorylation and cognitive impairment in DE. And these crucial alterations are also important bridge between T2D and AD. However, its unique mechanism is unclear. Methods The db/db mice, high-fat-diet (HFD) / streptozotocin (STZ)—induced diabetic (HF-diabetic) mice, and high-glucose-damaged (HGD) HT-22 hippocampal cells were enrolled to examine the effects of Ex-4 on AD-like changes in T2D. The Novel object recognition test (NORT) and Morris water maze test (MWMT) were conducted to evaluate the cognitive impairment. The Dickkopf-1 (DKK1) was employed to weaken the activation of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway to explore the mechanism of Ex-4 in protecting the brain functions. The JASPAR was based to predict the interaction between NeuroD1 and the promoter region of Ins2. Moreover, the chromatin immunoprecipitation coupled with quantitative polymerase chain reaction (ChIP-qPCR) and luciferase reporter assays were performed. Results Ex-4 alleviated the tau hyperphosphorylation, increased the brain-derived insulin, and improved the PI3K/AKT/GSK3-β signalling in db/db mice, HF-diabetic mice, and HGD HT-22 hippocampal neuronal cells. The NORT and MWMT indicated that Ex-4 alleviated the learning and memory deficits in HF-diabetic mice. The inhibitor Dickkopf-1 (DKK1) of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway significantly blocked the protective effects of Ex-4. Regarding further molecular mechanisms, NeuroD1 was affected by Ex-4 in vivo and in vitro, and the knockdown or overexpression of NeuroD1 suggested its crucial role in promoting the brain insulin by Ex-4. Meanwhile, the ChIP‒qPCR and luciferase reporter assays confirmed the combination between NeuroD1 and the promoter region of the insulin-encoding gene Ins2. And this interaction could be promoted by Ex-4. Conclusions Our study proposes that Ex-4 alleviates tau hyperphosphorylation and cognitive dysfunction by increasing Ins2-derived brain insulin through the Wnt/β-catenin/NeuroD1 signaling in T2D. And its also show new lights on part of the progress and mechanism on treatment targets for the DE in T2D.

Magnesium alloys with homogeneous degradation and controlled degradation rate are desirable for biodegradable materials. In the present work, Mg-3 wt.%Zn-0.2 wt.%Ca alloys with different columnar structures were fabricated and the degradation in 0.9 wt.% NaCl were investigated. With the increase of the growth rate for the directional solidification, the microstructure of the directionally solidified (DSed) alloy evolved from cellular to dendritic coupled with the change of the spacing of the primary trunks (λ1) and the volume fraction (fv) of Ca2Mg6Zn3 phase. The results of the corrosion test suggested that the alloy with cellular structure experienced homogeneous corrosion and exhibited the lowest corrosion rate. The good corrosion resistance of the alloy with cellular structure was attributed to the protective corrosion products film (CPF), which was closely related to the fv of Ca2Mg6Zn3 phase and λ1. To evaluate the corrosion rates (CR) of the DSed Mg-Zn-Ca alloys with different microstructures, a parameter α was proposed in this work, which was calculated by λ1 and the fv of Ca2Mg6Zn3 phase. The fitting result showed that there was a linear relationship between CR and α, which was CR = 4.1899 + 0.00432α. This means that the CR of the DSed Mg-Zn-Ca alloy can be evaluated if the microstructure had been characterized.

BackgroundThe clinical manifestations of multiple myeloma (MM) and bone metastatic tumor are both systemic bone pain, which is difficult to distinguish from imaging manifestations, leading to misdiagnosis and missed diagnosis.Case summaryWe reported a man with a unique case whose tumors were MM with bone metastatic tumor of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (CCRCC). Computed tomography (CT) showed multifocal osteolytic bone destruction, while magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed multifocal bone marrow infiltration with soft tissue mass. Pathology and immunohistochemistry established the diagnosis of the coexistence of myeloma with bone metastatic tumor of CCRCC in the spine. Immunotherapy and systemic chemotherapy were adopted in the clinic, and vertebral decompression was performed after anemia was corrected. This case with MM and bone metastatic tumor of CCRCC received radiotherapy and immunotherapy and acquired satisfying outcome after 1 year of follow-up.ConclusionIt is difficult to differentiate MM and bone metastatic tumor on imaging, especially when there are bone lesions at the same time, which is an easily missed diagnosis and needs to be comprehensively evaluated in combination with functional procedures, clinical laboratory tests, and histopathology.

Organic amendment is an effective method to reclaim salt-affected soil. However, in coastal land with shallow saline groundwater, it is limited known about the mechanism of organic amendment on soil desalinization. Thus, to examine the effect of topsoil organic matter content on soil water/salt transport and distribution, two-year field observations in Bohai coastal land, North China, and soil column experiments simulating salt accumulation and salt leaching were conducted, respectively. There were different organic fertilizer amendment rates in 0–20 cm topsoil, 0% (CK), 50% (OA 0.5), and 100% (OA 1.0) (w/w) for soil column experiments. Field observation showed that after organic amendment (OA), the soil’s physical structure was improved, and less of the increase in topsoil salt content was observed, with more salt accumulated in deep soil layers during the dry season. In addition, OA greatly promoted salt leaching during the rainy seasons. The results of the soil column tests further indicated that OA treatments significantly inhibited soil evaporation, with less salt accumulated in the topsoil. Although there was no difference in soil water distribution between the CK and OA 0.5 treatment, the topsoil EC for the OA 0.5 treatment was significantly lower than that for CK. During soil water infiltration, the OA 0.5 and OA 1.0 treatments significantly increased the infiltration rates, enhanced the wetting front, and promoted salt leaching to deeper soil layers, compared with CK. The improvement of soil organic amounts could make the soil more self-resistant to the coastal salinization. The findings of this study provide some insights into soil water/salt regulation in heterogeneous soil masses and on the permanent management of coastal saline farmland.

As the use of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) increases, the generation of related electronic waste has been a major challenge. Therefore, the development of environmentally friendly, biodegradable, and low-cost TENGs must be prioritized. Having discovered that plant proteins, by-products of grain processing, possess excellent triboelectric properties, we explore these properties by evaluating the protein structure. The proteins are recycled to fabricate triboelectric layers, and the triboelectric series according to electrical properties is determined for the first time. Using a special structure design, we construct a plant-protein-enabled biodegradable TENG by integrating a polylactic acid film, which is used as a new type of mulch film to construct a growth-promoting system that generates space electric fields for agriculture. Thus, from the plant protein to the crop, a sustainable recycling loop is implemented. Using bean seedlings as a model to confirm the feasibility of the mulch film, we further use it in the cultivation of greenhouse vegetables. Experimental results demonstrate the applicability of the proposed plant-protein-enabled biodegradable TENG in sustainable agriculture.

ABSTRACT Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is an effective means of modulating gut microbiota for the treatment of many diseases, including Clostridioides difficile infections. The gut-spleen axis has been established, and this is involved in the development and function of the spleen. However, it is not understood whether gut microbiota can be used to improve spleen function, especially in spleens disrupted by a disease or an anti-cancer treatment. In the current investigation, we established that alginate oligosaccharide (AOS)-improved gut microbiota (A10-FMT) can rescue anticancer drug busulfan-disrupted spleen vasculature and spleen function. A10-FMT improved the gene and/or protein expression of genes involved in vasculature development, increased the cell proliferation rate, enhanced the endothelial progenitor cell capability, and elevated the expression of the cell junction molecules to increase the vascularization of the spleen. This investigation found for the first time that the reestablishment of spleen vascularization restored spleen function by improving spleen immune cells and iron metabolism. These findings may be used as a strategy to minimize the side effects of anti-cancer drugs or to improve spleen vasculature-related diseases. IMPORTANCE Alginate oligosaccharide (AOS)-improved gut microbiota (A10-FMT) can rescue busulfan disrupted spleen vasculature. A10-FMT improved the cell proliferation rate, endothelial progenitor cell capability, and cell junction molecules to increase vasculature formation in the spleen. This reestablishment restored spleen function by improving spleen immune cells and iron metabolism. These findings are useful for the treatment of spleen vasculature-related diseases.

The intramuscular fat (IMF) content is considered an important factor for assessing meat quality, and is highly related to meat flavor. However, in donkey meat, the influences of IMF content on lipid and volatile profiles remain unclear. Thus, we conducted lipidomic and volatilomic investigations on high- and low-IMF samples from donkey longissimus dorsi muscle. When the IMF level increased, the monounsaturated fatty acid (especially oleic acid) content significantly increased but the saturated fatty acid content decreased (p < 0.05). Twenty-nine of 876 lipids showed significant differences between the two groups. Volatile profiles from differential IMF content samples were also distinct. Five differential volatile odorants were identified in the two groups: 2-acetyl-2-thiazoline, octanal, 2-pentylfuran, pentanal, and 1-(2-pyridinyl) ethanone. Additionally, strong correlations were found between differential fatty acids and lipids with differential odorants. Thus, the difference in volatile odorants may result from the change in the fatty acid composition and lipid profiles induced by different IMF contents, highlighting the urgent need to increase IMF levels in donkey meat.

Small mammal species play an important role influencing vegetation primary productivity and plant species composition, seed dispersal, soil structure, and as predator and/or prey species. Species which experience population dynamics cycles can, at high population phases, heavily impact agricultural sectors and promote rodent-borne disease transmission. To better understand the drivers behind small mammal distributions and abundances, and how these differ for individual species, it is necessary to characterise landscape variables important for the life cycles of the species in question. In this study, a suite of Earth observation derived metrics quantifying landscape characteristics and dynamics, and in-situ small mammal trapline and transect survey data, are used to generate random forest species distribution models for nine small mammal species for study sites in Narati, China and Sary Mogul, Kyrgyzstan. These species distribution models identify the important landscape proxy variables driving species abundance and distributions, in turn identifying the optimal conditions for each species. The observed relationships differed between species, with the number of landscape proxy variables identified as important for each species ranging from 3 for Microtus gregalis at Sary Mogul, to 26 for Ellobius tancrei at Narati. Results indicate that grasslands were predicted to hold higher abundances of Microtus obscurus, E. tancrei and Marmota baibacina, forest areas hold higher abundances of Myodes centralis and Sorex asper, with mixed forest-grassland boundary areas and areas close to watercourses predicted to hold higher abundances of Apodemus uralensis and Sicista tianshanica. Localised variability in vegetation and wetness conditions, as well as presence of certain habitat types, are also shown to influence these small mammal species abundances. Predictive application of the Random Forest (RF) models identified spatial hot-spots of high abundance, with model validation producing R2 values between 0.670 for M. gregalis transect data at Sary Mogul to 0.939 for E. tancrei transect data at Narati. This enhances previous work whereby optimal habitat was defined simply as presence of a given land cover type, and instead defines optimal habitat via a combination of important landscape dynamic variables, moving from a human-defined to species-defined perspective of optimal habitat. The species distribution models demonstrate differing distributions and abundances of host species across the study areas, utilising the strengths of Earth observation data to improve our understanding of landscape and ecological linkages to small mammal distributions and abundances.

Abstract The hypoxic microenvironment is presumed to be a sanctuary for myeloid leukemia cells that causes relapse following chemotherapy, but the underlying mechanism remains elusive. Using a zebrafish xenograft model, we observed that the hypoxic hematopoietic tissue preserved most of the chemoresistant leukemic cells following the doxorubicin (Dox) treatment. And hypoxia upregulated TFEB, a master regulator of lysosomal biogenesis, and increased lysosomes in leukemic cells. Specimens from relapsed myeloid leukemia patients also harbored excessive lysosomes, which trapped Dox and prevented drug nuclear influx leading to leukemia chemoresistance. Pharmaceutical inhibition of lysosomes enhanced Dox-induced cytotoxicity against leukemic cells under hypoxia circumstance. To overcome lysosome associated chemoresistance, we developed a pH-sensitive dextran-doxorubicin nanomedicine (Dex-Dox) that efficiently released Dox from lysosomes and increased drug nuclear influx. More importantly, Dex-Dox treatment significantly improved the chemotherapy outcome in the zebrafish xenografts transplanted with cultured leukemic cells or relapsed patient specimens. Overall, we developed a novel lysosome targeting nanomedicine that is promising to overcome the myeloid leukemia chemoresistance.

Vibrio cholerae (V. cholerae), one of the most important bacterial pathogens in history, is a gram-negative motile bacterium that causes fatal pandemic disease in humans via oral ingestion of contaminated water or food. This process involves the coordinated actions of numerous regulatory factors. The MerR family regulators, which are widespread in prokaryotes, have been reported to be associated with pathogenicity. However, the role of the MerR family regulators in V. cholerae virulence remains unknown. Our study systematically investigated the influence of MerR family regulators on intestinal colonization of V. cholerae within the host. Among the five MerR family regulators, MlrA was found to significantly promote the colonization capacity of V. cholerae in infant mice. Furthermore, we revealed that MlrA increases bacterial intestinal colonization by directly enhancing the expression of tcpA, which encodes one of the most important virulence factors in V. cholerae, by binding to its promoter region. In addition, we revealed that during infection, mlrA is activated by anaerobic signals in the small intestine of the host through Fnr. In summary, our findings reveal a MlrA-mediated virulence regulation pathway that enables V. cholerae to sense environmental signals at the infection site to precisely activate virulence gene expression, thus providing useful insights into the pathogenic mechanisms of V. cholerae.

Fatty acid (FA) composition of foods dictates a diversity of aspects regarding food quality, ranging from product shelf life, sensory properties to nutrition. There is a challenge to quantitate FAs using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry due to poor ionization efficiency and matrix effects. Here, an isotopic-tagged derivatization strategy was established to accurately and sensitively quantify free and esterified FAs. After derivatization reaction, the detection sensitivity of FAs was remarkably improved and the limit of quantitation was lower than 100 ng/L. The quantitative errors caused by matrix effects were diminished benefiting from isotope-derivatized internal standards. The established quantitation strategy was successfully applied to verify both free and esterified FA contents in meat after different post-harvest procedures, finding that free polyunsaturated FAs increased significantly during freezing process.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare disease characterized by the clonal accumulation and/or proliferation of specific dendritic cells resembling normal epidermal Langerhans cells (LCs). Clinical manifestations are variable, depending on the affected tissues or organs, however, LCH with elevated serum IgG4 has not been reported. Herein, we reported a 26-year-old Chinese female multi-system LCH (MS-LCH) who first presented with central diabetes insipidus (CDI), accompanied by panhypopituitarism and hepatic dysfunction. Diagnostic investigations were strongly suspicious of IgG4-RD because of elevated serum IgG4 levels during the process. Furtherly, thyroid and lymph node involvement and biopsy led to the diagnosis of MS-LCH; the strongly positive staining of CD1a, S100, CD207 (langerin), and Ki67 was found. Moreover, after systemic treatment with five cycles of chemotherapy, many lesions were greatly improved. Since both LCH and IgG4-RD are orphan diseases that can affect any organ, the differential diagnosis is challenging, especially when LCH is associated with unexplained serum IgG4 elevation. In this article, the case of a young woman suffering from MS-LCH that affected organs including the pituitary, thyroid, lymph node, and liver was summarized, and relevant literature was reviewed to better equip the diagnosis and treatment in its early stages.

Consequently, this study aims to determine the optimal cutoffs of grip strength, appendicular skeletal muscle index (ASMI) using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), and gait speed, comprising the best definition of sarcopenia for older Chinese populations.MethodsA total of 2,821 (1,398 men and 1,423 women) community-dwelling older people (≥60 years) and 409 (205 men and 204 women) young healthy adults (25–34 years) were recruited from three big cities in China. Besides gait speed and grip strength, we examined ASMI by BIA and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), comprising the three components of sarcopenia. DXA classification for low ASMI, 20th percentile among older adults in the study sample, was found to be best compared with the other existing classification, 1 SD and 2 SD below the mean for the young population, and was used as the gold standard to determine the optimal cutoffs of BIA using receiver operating characteristic curves (ROC). The cutoffs of handgrip strength and gait speed were determined following the same rule.ResultsUsing gender-specific 20th percentiles of DXA (6.53 kg/m2 for men and 5.40 kg/m2 for women), the cutoffs 7.05 kg/m2 for men and 5.85 kg/m2 for women were determined as optimal cutoffs of BIA by achieving the largest sensitivity (0.81, 95% CI: 0.63–0.93 for men and 0.90, 95% CI: 0.73–0.98 for women) and specificity greater than 0.80 (0.80, 95% CI: 0.72–0.87 for men and 0.81, 95% CI: 0.72–0.87 for women) in the ROC analysis. The 28.5 kg and 1.05 m/s for men and 18.6 kg and 1.01 m/s for women were determined as the cutoffs for handgrip strength and gait speed, respectively. Based on the derived cutoffs, 14.2% of men and 15.7% of women in the older Chinese study population were classified as sarcopenia.ConclusionNotably, 7.05 kg/m2, 28.5 kg, and 1.05 m/s for men and 5.85 kg/m2, 18.6 kg, and 1.01 m/s for women were selected as the optimal cutoffs for low ASMI by BIA, handgrip strength, and gait speed, respectively. These optimal cutoffs will enhance practicability for screening sarcopenia in primary care and clinical settings.

Although, the cecum plays vital roles in absorption of water, electrolytes, and other small molecules, and harbors trillions of commensal bacteria to shape large intestine immune functions, it is unknown the cecum development potentials at single cell level during the very crucial neonatal developmental period. Using singe cell RNA-seq and proteomics, we have characterized six major types of cecal cells: undifferentiated cells; immune cells (Ims); cecumocytes (CCs); goblet, Paneth like cells (PLCs), and enteroendocrine cells (EECs) with specific markers. CCs mature with a gradual decrease in proportion of cells; however, Ims develop with a continuing increase in proportion of cells. Meanwhile, goblet and EEC cells reduced in proportion of cells from do to d14 or d21; PLCs increased in proportion of cells from d0 to d7 then decreased at d14 and d21. The cells exhibit specific development and maturation trends controlled by transcriptional factors, ligand-receptor pairs, and other factors. As piglets grow, cecal content and mucosal microbial diversity increases dramatically with population of beneficial microbiota, such as lactobacillus. Moreover, cecal mucosal-associated and cecal content microbiota are positively correlated and both show significant correlation with different types of cecal cells and plasma metabolites. This is the first presentation of neonatal cecal cell development and maturation naturally at single cell level with transcript, protein, microbiota and metabolism perspectives. Furthermore, this study provides an important tool for the determination of novel interventions in cecal drug delivery and metabolism studies.

In order to understand the effects of drawing velocity, initial grain size and texture on the microstructure evolution during directional annealing, a cellular automata model based on grain boundary (GB) curvature, GB energy and GB mobility was established with a modified calculation model of the GB curvature. The simulation results show that there is a lower limit and an upper limit to the drawing velocity for the formation of columnar grains, and the columnar grains can only be formed between the upper limit and the lower limit. The simulation results are consistent with the experimental results. When the drawing velocity is lower than the lower limit, the equiaxed grains grow at the front of the hot zone, which hinders the formation of the columnar grains. With the increase of initial grain size, the driving force of GB migration decreases, and the grain boundaries are difficult to move with the hot zone, which is not conducive to the formation of columnar grains. There is an upper limit of initial grain size for the formation of columnar grains. The abnormal growth induced by texture prevents the growth of columnar grains during directional annealing. The weaker the texture strength, the more conducive to the growth of columnar grains.

The dispersal stage of pathogens is crucial for the successful spread and infection of their hosts. Some plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) have evolved specialized dispersal stages to reach healthy hosts by being carried out by insect vectors. Because gene gain and loss is a major factor contributing to the evolution of novel characteristics, it is essential to clarify the gene family characteristics among nematodes with different dispersal modes to disentangle the evolution of insect-mediated dispersal. Here, the size of the C-type lectin (CTL) family genes of insect-vectored nematodes was found to be drastically reduced compared with those of self-dispersing nematodes, whereas the diversity of their functional domains was significantly higher. The gene family sizes of vector-dispersed nematodes were only a twentieth of the size of that of a self-dispersing (i.e., without a biotic vector) nematode model Caenorhabditis elegans, and these genes were inactive during the dispersal stage. Phylogenetic analysis showed that some CTL genes of vector-borne PPNs shared higher homology to the animal parasitic nematodes compared with other PPNs. Moreover, homology modeling predicted that the CTLs of insect-vectored nematodes bear remarkable structural similarity to the lectin genes of their vector's immune system. Because CTL genes are important sugar-binding proteins for the innate immune response of C. elegans, the loss of some CTL genes of vector-transmitted PPNs might be responsible for their parallel adaptations to a mutualistic relationship with their vector. These results expand our understanding of the evolutionary benefits of vector-mediated transmission for the nematode and vector-nematode co-evolution.

Background: Elevated circulating post–meal triglyceride concentrations or postprandial triglyceride (ppTG) is an independent contributor to risk for coronary heart disease. Reliable ppTG reduction can be achieved by lowering the fat content of ingested meals. Objective: We hypothesized that a commonly consumed fried meal prepared by a hot air frying technique, which facilitates lower cooking oil usage, would result in lower ppTG responses than the same meal prepared by conventional deep fat frying. Design: We conducted a randomized crossover mixed meal test trial in young healthy male (n = 10) and female subjects (n = 5) in which serial blood samples (baseline, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 240, 300, 360, 420 mins) were collected for biochemical analysis before and after administration of the meals. ppTG response was calculated as the 420 min. Incremental area under the curve for serum TG concentrations after meal ingestion. Participants and analysts were blinded to the meal type under study. Results: Subjects' habitual diets were similar before each of the meal tests. We found that hot air frying led to a 74% reduction in the total fat content of the meal which resulted in a 67% reduction in the ppTG response (0.9 mmol∙h/L, 95%CI 0.4–1.5) compared to deep fat frying (3.8 mmol∙h/L, 95%CI 2.0–5.6, P

Globally soil salinity is one of the most devastating environmental stresses affecting agricultural systems and causes huge economic losses each year. High soil salinity causes osmotic stress, nutritional imbalance and ion toxicity to plants and severely affects crop productivity in farming systems. Freezing saline water irrigation and plastic mulching techniques were successfully developed in our previous study to desalinize costal saline soil. Understanding how microbial communities respond during saline soil amelioration is crucial, given the key roles soil microbes play in ecosystem succession. In the present study, the community composition, diversity, assembly and potential ecological functions of archaea, bacteria and fungi in coastal saline soil under amelioration practices of freezing saline water irrigation, plastic mulching and the combination of freezing saline water irrigation and plastic mulching were assessed through high-throughput sequencing. These amelioration practices decreased archaeal and increased bacterial richness while leaving fungal richness little changed in the surface soil. Functional prediction revealed that the amelioration practices, especially winter irrigation with saline water and film mulched in spring, promoted a community harboring heterotrophic features. β-null deviation analysis illustrated that amelioration practices weakened the deterministic processes in structuring coastal saline soil microbial communities. These results advanced our understanding of the responses of the soil microbiome to amelioration practices and provided useful information for developing microbe-based remediation approaches in coastal saline soils.

Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) O157:H7 is an important human pathogen causing severe diseases, such as hemorrhagic colitis and lethal hemolytic uremic syndrome. The signal-sensing capability of EHEC O157:H7 at specific host colonization sites via different two-component systems (TCSs) is closely related to its pathogenicity during infection. However, the types of systems involved and the regulatory mechanisms are not fully understood. Here, we investigated the function of the TCS BarA/UvrY regulator UvrY in the pathogenicity regulation of EHEC O157:H7. Our results showed that UvrY acts as a positive regulator of EHEC O157:H7 for cellular adherence and mouse colonization through the transcriptional activation of the locus for enterocyte effacement (LEE) pathogenic genes. Furthermore, this regulation is mediated by the LEE island master regulator, Ler. Our results highlight the significance of UvrY in EHEC O157:H7 pathogenicity and underline the unknown importance of BarA/UvrY in colonization establishment and intestinal adaptability during infection.

ABSTRACT The neonatal period is a crucial time during development of the mammalian small intestine. Moreover, neonatal development and maturation of the small intestine are exceptionally important for early growth, successful weaning, and postweaning growth and development, in order to achieve species-specific milestones. Although several publications recently characterized intestinal epithelial cell diversity at the single-cell level, it remains unclear how differentiation and molecular interactions take place between types and subtypes of epithelial cells during the neonatal period. A single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) survey of 40,186 ileal epithelial cells and proteomics analysis of ileal samples at 6 time points in the swine neonatal period were performed. The results revealed previously unknown developmental changes: specific increases in undifferentiated cells, unique enterocyte differentiation, and time-dependent reduction in secretory cells. Moreover, we observed specific transcriptional factors, ligand-receptor pairs, G protein-coupled receptors, transforming growth factor β, bone morphogenetic protein signaling pathways, and gut mucosal microbiota playing vital roles in ileal development during the neonatal window. This work offers new comprehensive information regarding ileal development throughout the neonatal period. Reference to this data set may assist in the creation of novel interventions for inflammation-, metabolism-, and proliferation-related gut pathologies. IMPORTANCE We found previously unknown neonatal ileum developmental potentials: specific increases in undifferentiated cells, unique enterocyte differentiation, and time dependent reduction in secretory cells. Frozen storage is an important strategy to maintain meat quality for long-term storage and transportation. Lipid oxidation is one of the predominant causes of the deterioration of meat quality during frozen storage. Untargeted lipidomic and targeted metabolomics were employed to comprehensively evaluate the effect of frozen duration on pork lipid profiles and lipid oxidative products including free fatty acids and fatty aldehydes. A total of 688 lipids, 40 fatty acids and 14 aldehydes were successfully screened in a pork sample. We found that ether-linked glycerophospholipids, the predominant type of lipids, gradually decreased during frozen storage. Of these ether-linked glycerophospholipids, ether-linked phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylcholine containing more than one unsaturated bond were greatly influenced by frozen storage, resulting in an increase in free polyunsaturated fatty acids and fatty aldehydes. Among these lipid oxidative products, decanal, cis-11,14-eicosenoic acid and cis-5,8,11,14,17-dicosapentaenoic acid can be considered as potential indicators to calculate the freezing time of unknown frozen pork samples. Moreover, over the three-month frozen storage, the first month was a rapid oxidation stage while the other two months were a slow oxidation stage.

Reducing the local stress in the vicinity of the grain boundaries is a favorable way to improve the super-elastic properties of super-elastic alloys. The crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM) was applied in this study to simulate the deformation behavior and local stress of a super-elastic Cu-8Al-11Mn (wt.%) alloy containing single grains with various orientations, columnar grains with different misorientation angles, and tri-crystals with distinct grain boundary morphologies. The results indicated that the stress distribution of single grains presented obvious orientation dependence during deformation. Uniformly distributed stress was observed in grains with orientations of 0° and 90° when more slip systems were activated during deformation. With the increase in the misorientation angles of columnar grains, the stresses in the vicinity of the grain boundaries increased, which was related to the difference in the shear stress of the slip systems in adjacent grains. When the difference in the shear stress of the slip systems in two adjacent grains was large, a local stress concentration formed in the vicinity of the grain boundary. Compared with the triple-junction grain boundaries, the local stresses of the straight and vertical grain boundaries were smaller, which was closely related to the number of activated slip systems on both sides of the grain boundary. The above results were obtained experimentally and could be used to design super-elastic alloys with high performance.

Ecological restoration of coastal land by planting salt-tolerant plants has been widely used to construct vegetation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes induced by tamarisk (Tamarix chinensis) shrub on coastal soil physical quality and as well as the corresponding impact on salt distribution in the soil. A field study was conducted on coastal saline land, North China, where tamarisk plantation was established 5-year-old (T-5yr) and 11-year-old (T-11yr), and compared with barren land as control (CK). Quantitative soil physical properties, soil physical quality index, soil salt distribution, and salt leaching were examined. The results indicated that planting tamarisk improved the coastal soil properties at higher degree in topsoil than in deep soil layers. Tamarisk plantation significantly increased soil organic carbon content and pH. It also enhanced the formation of soil large aggregates and porosity; however, reduction soil bulk density and salt content in topsoil were recorded. Soil physical quality index was positively correlated with root weight density of tamarisk, and soil of T-11 yr plantation exhibited the highest soil physical quality index, with promoted soil physical functions of supporting root growth and the resistance to soil degradation. In addition, tamarisk induced soil physical changes which enhanced the salt-leaching in rainy season and contributed to the homogeneous salt distribution in soil profile. Consequently, the ecological benefits of tamarisk vegetation turned coastal saline land into a fertile land by plant–soil interaction and the soil structure improvement, therefore, it prevented the natural soil accumulation by accelerating the salt leaching after tamarisk was restored. This study provides some insights into the mechanism of tamarisk on coastal soil restoration and its regulation of soil salt distribution.

In recent years, diabetes mellitus has become a global issue with increasing incidence rate worldwide. Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM), one of the important complications of diabetes, refers to patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes who have ventricular hypertrophy, fibrosis and even diastolic dysfunction. The pathogenesis of DCM is related to oxidative stress, inflammatory response, apoptosis, autophagy, myocardial fibrosis and, diabetic microangiopathy. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNA) is a non-coding RNA with a length longer than 200 nucleotides which lack the ability of protein coding. With the development of molecular technology, massive evidence demonstrates that lncRNA play a critical role in the molecular mechanism of DCM. Moreover, it can also be used as potential diagnostic markers for DCM. In this review, we intend to summarize the pathological roles and molecular mechanism of lncRNA in the progression of diabetic cardiomyopathy, which may provide promising diagnosis and treatment strategies for DCM.

Objective: This study evaluated the pharmacokinetics, safety, and bioequivalence (BE) of two formulations of rasagiline tablets in healthy Chinese subjects under fasting and fed conditions.Methods: An open, randomized, single-dose, double-cycle, two-sequence, self-crossover pharmacokinetic study in healthy Chinese subjects under fasting and high-fat postprandial conditions was performed. A total of 108 healthy subjects (36 in the fasting group and 72 in the postprandial group) were recruited. In each cycle of the study under both conditions, subjects received a single oral dose of 1 mg of a test or reference preparation of rasagiline tablets (1 mg each). A washout period of 3 days was observed. Blood samples were obtained up to 10 h post-intake. Primary endpoints were the BE of major pharmacokinetic parameters (AUC0–t and AUC0–∞) and the maximum observed serum concentration (Cmax). Secondary endpoints were safety parameters.Results: The 90% confidence interval (CI) of the geometric mean ratio (GMR) of the test drug vs. the reference drug for rasagiline was 94.16–105.35% for the AUC0–t under fasting conditions and 99.88–107.07% under postprandial conditions. The 90% CIs for the AUC0–∞ were 93.55–105.01% and 99.59–107.05% under fasting and postprandial conditions, respectively. The 90% CIs for the Cmax were 88.26–108.46% and 89.54–118.23% under fasting and postprandial conditions, respectively. The 90% CIs for the test/reference AUC ratio and Cmax ratio were within the acceptable range (0.80–1.25) for BE. In this BE study, there were no serious adverse events (AEs).Conclusion: BE between the test and the reference products was established in both fasting and postprandial conditions. The two formulations of rasagiline showed good tolerability and a similar safety profile.Clinical Trial Registration:chinaDrugtrials.org.cn, identifier CTR20181466.

Predicting drought responses of individual trees in tropical forests remains challenging, in part because trees experience drought differently depending on their position in spatially heterogeneous environments. Specifically, topography and the competitive environment can influence the severity of water stress experienced by individual trees, leading to individual-level variation in drought impacts. A drought in 2015 in Puerto Rico provided the opportunity to assess how drought response varies with topography and neighborhood crowding in a tropical forest. In this study, we integrated 3 years of annual census data from the El Yunque Chronosequence plots with measurements of functional traits and LiDAR-derived metrics of microsite topography. We fit hierarchical Bayesian models to examine how drought, microtopography, and neighborhood crowding influence individual tree growth and survival, and the role functional traits play in mediating species’ responses to these drivers. We found that while growth was lower during the drought year, drought had no effect on survival, suggesting that these forests are fairly resilient to a single-year drought. However, growth response to drought, as well as average growth and survival, varied with topography: tree growth in valley-like microsites was more negatively affected by drought, and survival was lower on steeper slopes while growth was higher in valleys. Neighborhood crowding reduced growth and increased survival, but these effects did not vary between drought/non-drought years. Functional traits provided some insight into mechanisms by which drought and topography affected growth and survival. For example, trees with high specific leaf area grew more slowly on steeper slopes, and high wood density trees were less sensitive to drought. However, the relationships between functional traits and response to drought and topography were weak overall. Species sorting across microtopography may drive observed relationships between average performance, drought response, and topography. Our results suggest that understanding species’ responses to drought requires consideration of the microenvironments in which they grow. Complex interactions between regional climate, topography, and traits underlie individual and species variation in drought response.

Understanding the role of root cell walls in the mechanism of plant tolerance to salinity requires elucidation of the changes caused by salinity in the interactions between the mechanical properties of the cell walls and root growth, and between the chemical composition of the cell walls and root growth. Here, we investigated cell wall composition and extensibility of roots by growing a halophyte (Suaeda salsa) and a glycophyte (Spinacia oleracea) species under an NaCl concentration gradient. Root growth was inhibited by increased salinity in both species. However, root growth was more strongly reduced in S. oleracea than in S. salsa. Salinity reduced cell wall extensibility in S. oleracea significantly, whereas treatment with up to 200 mM NaCl increased it in S. salsa. Meanwhile, S. salsa root cell walls exhibited relatively high cell wall stiffness under 300 mM NaCl treatment, which resist wall deformation under such stress conditions. There was no decrease in pectin content with salinity treatment in the cell walls of the elongation zone of S. salsa roots. Conversely, a decrease in pectin content was noted with increasing salinity in S. oleracea, which might be due to Na+ accumulation. Cellulose content and uronic acid proportions in pectin increased with salinity in both species. Our results suggest that (1) cell wall pectin plays important roles in cell wall extension in both species under salinity, and that the salt tolerance of glycophyte S. oleracea is affected by the pectin; (2) cellulose limits root elongation under saline conditions in both species, but in halophytes, a high cell wall content and the proportion of cellulose in cell walls may be a salt tolerance mechanism that protects the stability of cell structure under salt stress; and (3) the role of the cell wall in root growth under salinity is more prominent in the glycophyte than in the halophyte.

In the present work, the effect of heat treatment on the cyclic deformation behavior of as-extruded ZA81M magnesium alloy was investigated. Two heat treatment conditions were applied to the as-extruded ZA81M alloy: a solution treatment (T4, 653 K for 40 h and quenched with 298 K water) and a solution treatment plus artificial aging (T6, 348 K for 32 h (pre-aging at low temperature) and 453 K for 8 h (the second aging) and quenched with 353 K water). The results showed that the fine second phase precipitated after the aging treatment, the tensile yield strength of the T6-treated specimens increased, and the stress amplitude of T6-treated specimens was always higher than that of T4-treated specimens. The T6-treated specimens had a higher total strain energy density and a shorter fatigue life at a strain amplitude of 0.4%, and a lower total strain energy density and a longer fatigue life at a strain amplitude of 0.8%, compared to the T4-treated specimens. All fatigue cracks of the T4 and T6 ZA81M alloy were initiated at the second phase or along the grain boundary and propagated perpendicular to the loading direction.

Long-term consumption of pistachios could potentially improves glucose homeostasis. Impaired postprandial glucose, insulin, and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) responses have been reported in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) patients. The objective of this study was to evaluate the acute effects of two isocaloric test meals, 42 g pistachios and 100 g whole-wheat bread (WWB) on postprandial glucose, insulin, and gut derived incretin levels in Chinese women with gestational impaired glucose tolerance (GIGT) or GDM. Expected glucose and insulin responses were observed after WWB consumption. Isocaloric pistachio intake had minimal effect on blood glucose or insulin. In both GIGT and GDM patients, significant higher GLP-1 levels were observed at 90 and 120 min after pistachio compared to WWB intake. Significant lower gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP) levels were observed at 30 and 60 min in GDM patients or 120 min in GIGT patients after pistachio compared to WWB intake. In summary, isocaloric pistachio intake induced significantly lower postprandial glucose, insulin and GIP but higher GLP-1 levels compared to WWB. Our data suggest pistachios are effective alternative to a low-fat, high-carbohydrate food to improve postprandial glucose, insulin, and GLP-1 response in women with GDM and GIGT.

A naphthalimide-based fluorescent probe, Nap-I, with iodoacetamide as the alkylating group, has been synthesized, and its specific fluorescent staining of proteins containing cysteine (Cys) and selenocysteine (Sec) residues in sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) has been evaluated. This molecule shows good fluorescence properties in the labeling of protein Cys/Sec residues, while reducing steric hindrance and minimizing changes in the water solubility of proteins. Reaction parameters, such as labeling time and pH, have been investigated, and the optimal labeling conditions for Cys-containing proteins have been determined. Thioredoxin reductase (TXNRD) is best stained at low pH. The probe Nap-I has been successfully used for the quantification of serum proteins and hemoglobin in Tan sheep serum, and TXNRD in Tan sheep liver and muscle has been labeled at low pH. Based on the probe Nap-I, we have also distinguished TXNRD1 and TXNRD2 by SDS-PAGE. The results showed that, compared with the normal microenvironment in which the protein resides, the lower the pH value, the greater the TXNRD activity.

The solution treatment parameters, mechanical properties and corrosion behavior of binary Mg-4Zn alloy were investigated. The results showed that after the solution treatment at 335 °C for 16 h, Mg-4Zn alloy had an ultimate tensile strength of 184.13 MPa and elongation of 9.43%. Furthermore, the corrosion resistance was evaluated by electrochemical measurements and immersion tests in 3.5% NaCl solution. The results revealed that the corrosion current density of the solution treatment Mg alloy was 11.2 µA/cm−2, it was lower than 15.8 µA/cm−2 for the as-cast Mg alloy under the same conditions, which was greatly associated with the micro-cathode effect of the second phases.

(1) Background: As a halophytic species, Tamarix (Tamarix chinensis) can be used for saline soil rehabilitation in China. The reclamation and rehabilitation of saline soil depend on the water consumption of plants. However, whether water resources in saline soil can support the construction of Tamarix vegetation is still unknown. (2) Methods: In this study, we measured the transpiration (T) of Tamarix for 3 years using sap flow and the evaporation (E) for 1 year using a micro-lysimeter in Tamarix land. The evaporation values in 2016 and 2017 were estimated with the soil crop coefficients obtained in 2018. (3) Results: The evapotranspiration (ET) ranged from 514.2 to 573.8 mm and was greatly affected by the wind speed, VPD and groundwater table. Transpiration was the main form of water consumption in this region, accounting for 60.2% of the total evapotranspiration. Compared with bare land, vegetation construction increased soil moisture dissipation by 377.6 mm in 2018. According to on-site measurements and estimates, the water shortage in the dry year was 107.2 mm, and the residual water values in the normal year and wet year were 77.8 mm and 187.5 mm, respectively. May and September were months of widespread water shortages in different precipitation years. Although the cultivation of this plant increased water consumption, the groundwater table remained at approximately 0.5 m during the study year. (4) Conclusions: These results indicated that planting Tamarix in coastal saline soil was feasible for the reclamation and rehabilitation of saline soil. In the dry year (2017), the consumption of evapotranspiration exceeded the precipitation. The inverse occurred in the normal year (2016) and wet year (2018). Taken together, our findings showed that the water resources in the coastal saline soil of China could tolerate vegetation construction and laid a strong foundation for saline soil rehabilitation.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the true community prevalence of human cystic (CE) and alveolar (AE) echinococcosis (hydatid disease) in a highly endemic region in Ningxia Hui, China, by detecting asymptomatic cases. METHODS: Using hospital records and "AE-risk" landscape patterns we selected study communities predicted to be at risk of human echinococcosis in Guyuan, Longde and Xiji counties. We conducted community surveys of 4773 individuals from 26 villages in 2002 and 2003 using questionnaire analysis, ultrasound examination and serology. FINDINGS: Ultrasound and serology showed a range of prevalences for AE (0-8.1%; mean 2%) and CE (0-7.4%; mean 1.6%), with the highest prevalence in Xiji (2% for CE, 2.5% for AE). There were significant differences in the prevalence of CE, AE and total echinococcosis between the three counties and villages (with multiple degrees of freedom). While hospital records showed 96% of echinococcosis cases attributable to CE, our survey showed a higher prevalence of human AE (56%) compared to CE (44%). Questionnaire analysis revealed that key risk factors for infection were age and dog ownership for both CE and AE, and Hui ethnicity and being female for AE. Drinking well-water decreased the risk for both AE and CE. CONCLUSION: Echinococcosis continues to be a severe public health problem in this part of China because of unhygienic practices/habits and poor knowledge among the communities regarding this disease.

Purpose. Systematic reviews of case-control and prospective studies showed a positive association between habitual salt intake and gastric cancer. Given new studies published thereafter, we carried out a meta-analysis to assess the association between dietary salt intake and gastric cancer. Methods. Case-control studies and cohort studies published between January 1992 and January 2012 on PubMed and Embase were searched. We quantified associations between salt intake and gastric cancer with meta-analysis. Results. Eleven studies (7 case controls and 4 cohorts) finally were included in the meta-analysis (total population: n=2076498; events: n=12039).
