Abstract Background Gut microbiota and their metabolites play a regulatory role in skeletal muscle growth and development, which be known as gut-muscle axis. 3-phenylpropionic acid (3-PPA), a metabolite produced by colonic microorganisms from phenylalanine in the gut, presents in large quantities in the blood circulation. But few study revealed its function in skeletal muscle development. Results Here, we demonstrated the beneficial effects of 3-PPA on muscle mass increase and myotubes hypertrophy both in vivo and vitro. Further, we discovered the 3-PPA effectively inhibited protein degradation and promoted protein acetylation in C2C12 and chick embryo primary skeletal muscle myotubes. Mechanistically, we supported that 3-PPA reduced NAD+ synthesis and subsequently suppressed tricarboxylic acid cycle and the mRNA expression of SIRT1/3, thus promoting the acetylation of total protein and Foxo3. Moreover, 3-PPA may inhibit Foxo3 activity by directly binding. Conclusions This study firstly revealed the effect of 3-PPA on skeletal muscle growth and development, and newly discovered the interaction between 3-PPA and Foxo3/NAD+ which mechanically promote myotubes hypertrophy. These results expand new understanding for the regulation of gut microbiota metabolites on skeletal muscle growth and development.

By examining the complex impact of LLMs across critical areas of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), including the role of HEIs as gatekeepers of knowledge, providers of credentials, research centres, incubators of innovation, drivers of social change and employers. In addition to academic integrity, the future of higher education, intellectual property, and public perception. The findings of this paper indicate that LLMs can empower transformation in HEIs by revolutionising various aspects of academia. The aim is to unveil the profound implications of integrating these cutting-edge technologies. The comprehensive study in this paper reveals the significant impacts and challenges associated with using LLMs in academic settings, which is achieved through a detailed analysis of current literature. The core findings suggest that LLMs hold the promise to trigger significant advancements in higher education. This paper also discusses the innovative potential of LLMs, and it outlines a path for their effective use in HEIs, emphasising the importance of a thoughtful approach to maximise their educational benefits. HEIs must address these challenges thoughtfully, ensuring that the integration of LLMs aligns with their fundamental objectives of promoting education, critical thinking, and personal growth.

Tryptophan plays an important role in the pig industry but has the potential to improve performance in the poultry industry. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of tryptophan supplementation in diets with different protein levels on the feed intake, average daily gain (ADG), and feed conversion ratio (F/G) of broilers. A total of 180 twenty-one-day-old broilers (half male and half female) were weighed and randomly allocated to twelve groups, with six male and six female groups. Each group consisted of 15 broilers. The broilers were fed low- (17.2%), medium- (19.2%), or high- (21.2%) protein diets with or without extra tryptophan (up to 0.25%) during the 28-day experiment. Food intake and body weight were measured weekly during the trial period. Male broilers fed a medium-protein diet containing more tryptophan showed a lower F/G. In the low-protein diet groups, additional tryptophan caused a significant reduction in the feed intake of female broilers during the first two weeks. Moreover, the serum GLP-1, cholesterol, and bile acid levels, as well as the expression of FXR mRNA in the ileum, were significantly increased. Additionally, the FXR mRNA in the hypothalamus and the GCG and GLP-1R mRNAs in the ileum tended to increase in these broilers. In summary, the tryptophan concentration in the diet can influence the feed intake and metabolism of broilers. Under a standard diet, an appropriate amount of tryptophan is beneficial to the F/G of male broilers, while under a low-protein diet, tryptophan supplementation may cause a short-term reduction in the feed intake of female broilers by increasing serum GLP-1 and bile acid signals.

Light field imaging typically requires large format detectors and yet often compromises resolution or speed. Here, compact light field photography is presented to lift both restrictions to see through and around severe occlusions in 3D and real time.

Single-pixel holography generates holographic images with a single-pixel detector making this relatively inexpensive. Here the authors report a high-throughput single-pixel compressive holography method for imaging biological tissue which can either provide a large field of view or high resolution.

Speed and 3D capability are often incompatible for non-line-of-sight imaging. Here, the authors introduce ultrafast light field tomography (LIFT) that uses an efficient light field acquisition technique to obtain 3D and time.

This paper proposes a new optimized parameter model that enhances the pointing accuracy of moving-platform electro-optical telescopes (MPEOTs). The study begins by comprehensively analyzing the error sources, including the telescope and the platform navigation system. Next, a linear pointing correction model is established based on the target positioning process. To eliminate multicollinearity, stepwise regression is applied to obtain the optimized parameter model. The experimental results show that the MPEOT corrected by this model outperforms the mount model, with pointing errors of less than 50 arcsec for approximately 23 h. In the three tests conducted, the modified azimuth error(s) (RMS) were 14.07″, 12.71″, and 28.93″, and the elevation error(s) (RMS) were 12.94″, 12.73″, and 28.30″, respectively.

Multidimensional photography has traditionally been restricted by their static optical architectures and measurement schemes. Here, the authors present a tunable multidimensional photography approach employing active optical mapping, which allows them to adapt the acquisition schemes to the scene.

The vulnerability of current face recognition systems to presentation attacks significantly limits their application in biometrics. Herein, we present a passive presentation attack detection method based on a complete plenoptic imaging system which can derive the complete plenoptic function of light rays using a single detector. Moreover, we constructed a multi-dimensional face database with 50 subjects and seven different types of presentation attacks. We experimentally demonstrated that our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on all types of presentation attacks.

The more sensory channels are equipped in a virtual assembly system, the more real users feel in the whole system, however, most of the existing virtual assembly systems are based on the natural interaction method of one or two sensory channels. Thus, this paper proposes a novel virtual assembly system integrating multi-sensory channels, including gesture interaction, Chinese speech interaction, tactile interaction, 3D display and real-time display of real environment pictures in the virtual environment. To improve the operability of the virtual environment, we analyze the parallel virtual assembly sequence on the basis of two-hand interaction, and the assembly priority is prompted based on UI interface. For ease of operation, we present a method of viewpoint control based on gesture interaction and the coordinate threshold of spatial position. A hierarchical bounding box collision detection algorithm based on volume difference is proposed to improve the efficiency of collision feedback and collision avoidance. In addition, the power equipment models are exhibited in the virtual scene, as the exhibits of the virtual roaming process. Finally, to evaluate the training effect of this system, a comparative experiment is designed to compare the participants' experience and the effect of assembly training. The experimental results show that the virtual assembly system of natural interaction with multi-sensory channels is flexible and immersive.

An easy and scalable synthetic route was proposed for synthesis of a high-energy stable anode material composed of carbon-coated Si nanoparticles (NPs, 80 nm) confined in a three-dimensional (3D) network-structured conductive carbon nanotube (CNT) matrix (Si/CNT@C). The Si/CNT@C composite was fabricated via in situ polymerization of resorcinol formaldehyde (RF) resin in the co-existence of Si NPs and CNTs, followed by carbonization at 700 °C. The RF resin-derived carbon shell (~10 nm) was wrapped on the Si NPs and CNTs surface, welding the Si NPs to the sidewall of the interconnected CNTs matrix to avoid Si NP agglomeration. The unique 3D architecture provides a highway for Li+ ion diffusion and electron transportation to allow the fast lithiation/delithiation of the Si NPs; buffers the volume fluctuation of Si NPs; and stabilizes solid–electrolyte interphase film. As expected, the obtained Si/CNT@C hybrid exhibited excellent lithium storage performances. An initial discharge capacity of 1925 mAh g−1 was achieved at 0.1 A g−1 and retained as 1106 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles at 0.1 A g−1. The reversible capacity was retained at 827 mAh g−1 when the current density was increased to 1 A g−1. The Si/CNT@C possessed a high Si content of 62.8 wt%, facilitating its commercial application. Accordingly, this work provides a promising exploration of Si-based anode materials for high-energy stable lithium-ion batteries.

Photoacoustic (PA) and thermoacoustic (TA) effects have been explored in many applications, such as bio-imaging, laser-induced ultrasound generator, and sensitive electromagnetic (EM) wave film sensor. In this paper, we propose a compact analytical PA/TA generation model to incorporate EM, thermal and mechanical parameters, etc. From the derived analytical model, both intuitive predictions and quantitative simulations are performed. It shows that beyond the EM absorption improvement, there are many other physical parameters that deserve careful consideration when designing contrast agents or film composites, followed by simulation study. Lastly, several sets of experimental results are presented to prove the feasibility of the proposed analytical model. Overall, the proposed compact model could work as a clear guidance and predication for improved PA/TA contrast agents and film generator/sensor designs in the domain area.

Abstract Photoacoustic sensing and imaging techniques have been studied widely to explore optical absorption contrast based on nanosecond laser illumination. In this paper, we report a long laser pulse induced dual photoacoustic (LDPA) nonlinear effect, which originates from unsatisfied stress and thermal confinements. Being different from conventional short laser pulse illumination, the proposed method utilizes a long square-profile laser pulse to induce dual photoacoustic signals. Without satisfying the stress confinement, the dual photoacoustic signals are generated following the positive and negative edges of the long laser pulse. More interestingly, the first expansion-induced photoacoustic signal exhibits positive waveform due to the initial sharp rising of temperature. On the contrary, the second contraction-induced photoacoustic signal exhibits exactly negative waveform due to the falling of temperature, as well as pulse-width-dependent signal amplitude. An analytical model is derived to describe the generation of the dual photoacoustic pulses, incorporating Gruneisen saturation and thermal diffusion effect, which is experimentally proved. Lastly, an alternate of LDPA technique using quasi-CW laser excitation is also introduced and demonstrated for both super-contrast in vitro and in vivo imaging. Compared with existing nonlinear PA techniques, the proposed LDPA nonlinear effect could enable a much broader range of potential applications.

Large-scale laser gyroscopes have found important applications in Earth sciences due to their self-sufficient property of measurement of the Earth’s rotation without any external references. In order to extend the relative rotation measurement accuracy to a better level so that it can be used for the determination of the Earth orientation parameters (EOP), we investigate the limitations in a passive resonant laser gyroscope (PRG) developed at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) to pave the way for future development. We identify the noise sources from the derived noise transfer function of the PRG. In the frequency range below 10−2Hz, the contribution of free-spectral-range (FSR) variation is the dominant limitation, which comes from the drift of the ring cavity length. In the 10−2 to 103Hz frequency range, the limitation is due to the noises of the frequency discrimination system, which mainly comes from the residual amplitude modulation (RAM) in the frequency range below 2 Hz. In addition, the noise contributed by the Mach–Zehnder-type beam combiner is also noticeable in the 0.01 to 2 Hz frequency range. Finally, possible schemes for future improvement are also discussed.

Acoustic resolution photoacoustic microscopy (AR-PAM) generally suffers from limited depth of focus, which had been extended by synthetic aperture focusing techniques (SAFTs). However, for three dimensional AR-PAM, current one dimensional (1D) SAFT and its improved version like cross-shaped SAFT do not provide isotropic resolution in the lateral direction. The full potential of the SAFT remains to be tapped. To this end, two dimensional (2D) SAFT with fast computing architecture is proposed in this work. Explained by geometric modeling and Fourier acoustics theories, 2D-SAFT provide the narrowest post-focusing capability, thus to achieve best lateral resolution. Compared with previous 1D-SAFT techniques, the proposed 2D-SAFT improved the lateral resolution by at least 1.7 times and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by about 10 dB in both simulation and experiments. Moreover, the improved 2D-SAFT algorithm is accelerated by a graphical processing unit that reduces the long period of reconstruction to only a few seconds. The proposed 2D-SAFT is demonstrated to outperform previous reported 1D SAFT in the aspects of improving the depth of focus, imaging resolution, and SNR with fast computational efficiency. This work facilitates future studies on in vivo deeper and high-resolution photoacoustic microscopy beyond several centimeters.

Recently, the design concept of magnetic resonant coupling has been adapted to electromagnetic therapy applications such as non-invasive radiofrequency (RF) stimulation. This technique can significantly increase the electric field radiated from the magnetic coil at the stimulation target, and hence enhancing the current flowing through the nerve, thus enabling stimulation. In this paper, the developed magnetic resonant coupling (MRC) stimulation, magnetic stimulation (MS) and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) are compared. The differences between the MRC RF stimulation and other techniques are presented in terms of the operating mechanism, ex-vivo tissue voltage measurement and electromagnetic simulation analysis. The ev-vivo tissue voltage measurement experiment is performed on the compared devices based on measuring the voltage induced by electromagnetic induction at the tissue. The focusing effect, E field and voltage induced across the tissue, and the attenuation due to the increase of separation between the coil and the target are analyzed. The electromagnetic stimulation will also be performed to obtain the electric field and magnetic field distribution around the biological medium. The electric field intensity is proportional to the induced current and the magnetic field is corresponding to the electromagnetic induction across the biological medium. The comparison between the MRC RF stimulator and the MS and TENS devices revealed that the MRC RF stimulator has several advantages over the others for the applications of inducing current in the biological medium for stimulation purposes.
