In a neutral, flexible, grounded distribution network, the phenomenon that a single-phase ground fault with high impedance connected in parallel with a low resistance can result in a relatively lower zero-sequence current flowing through the faulty feeder. This zero-sequence current can make it a challenge to use zero-sequence protection schemes to accurately identify and effectively protect the faulty feeder. In terms of the aforementioned challenge, based on the zero-sequence equivalent circuit of a single-phase-to-earth fault, this paper conducts an investigation on the phase difference between the zero-sequence current and the non-fault phase line voltage at power frequency in flexible grounding distribution network with different grounded conditions, both before and after the introduction of a parallel low-resistor connection. Subsequently, a criterion for selecting the faulty feeder is developed based on the observed phase difference characteristics following the implementation of the parallel low-resistor connection. Furthermore, a disposal strategy for single-phase-to-earth faults is formulated, which takes fault resistance estimation into account. To validate the proposed method, a simulation model of a flexible grounding distribution network is implemented with PSCAD/EMTDC. The effectiveness and reliability of this method in multiple scenes, including the initial fault conditions, sampling frequency, and distributed generation (DG), are proved through simulation results.

In order to study the influence of air pressure and water pressure on the particle size parameters of ultrasonic atomization spray, an experimental platform was designed in this paper. Anionic surfactant rapid infiltration T was selected to configure a solution with a concentration of 0.07 % for experiment. The changes of particle size parameters of ultrasonic atomization spray under different combinations of air pressure and water pressure were analyzed. The experimental results show that the particle size parameters D10, D50, D90, VAD, SMD and NAD decrease with the increase of air pressure, and the decrease is affected by water pressure. At the same time, the above particle size parameters also increase with the increase of water pressure, and the increase will also be affected by air pressure. The influence of air pressure on the change of droplet size is greater than that of water pressure. When the pressure changes, the change trend of particle size parameters D10 and NAD is highly consistent, and the increase of particle size of D50, VAD and SMD is highly consistent.

Abstract Currently, high-yield gas reservoirs have been discovered by exploring Lower Paleozoic tight carbonate oil and gas reservoirs in the Changqing area. These reservoirs, however, are impacted by subsequent karstification and diagenesis processes, leading to the formation of complex pore spaces with varying pore diameters ranging from microns to millimeters. Conventional well curves, with a resolution at the decimeter level, can only provide an overview of the reservoir porosity, making it challenging to evaluate the pore structure. On the other hand, electrical imaging logging data has a sampling interval of 0.1 inches and a resolution as fine as 5 mm, providing valuable information for pore structure evaluation in tight reservoirs. Since formation resistivity is influenced by factors like porosity, mud filtrate resistivity, and cementation, the cementation index serves as a reflection of the pore structure. Therefore, by calibrating the cementation index using data obtained from experiments at different scales, the pore structure parameters of tight carbonate reservoirs can be evaluated. This study conducted a comparison between numerous core experiments at various scales and both conventional and imaging log data. A method was proposed for extracting pore size distribution characteristics and calculating the pore size spectrum based on electrical imaging logging, ultimately leading to the establishment of a quantitative evaluation model for the pore structure of tight carbonate reservoirs. The results demonstrated improved accuracy and consistency in interpretation, as confirmed by well test data.

The “load-following” characteristic of the power system makes the electricity consumption behavior on the load side crucial for the low-carbon operation of the distribution network. To address this, this paper proposes an improved dynamic carbon emission factor for the distribution network, taking into account the spatiotemporal characteristics of carbon emission intensity and the integration capacity of photovoltaics (PV). Based on this, a calculation method for the carbon emissions of the distribution network load is provided. Subsequently, for commercial and industrial user scenarios, demand response models are separately constructed for commercial and industrial loads based on different driving mechanisms. Using time-of-use electricity prices as decision variables, optimization scheduling of the distribution network is carried out with the objectives of minimizing scheduling costs and carbon emissions. At the same time, a case study is conducted in an improved IEEE-33 node distribution network. The results indicate that, under the guidance of the improved dynamic carbon emission factor, load transfer can be achieved through fluctuating electricity prices, effectively reducing the scheduling costs of the distribution network, decreasing carbon emissions, and enhancing the PV integration capacity of the distribution network in different user scenarios. Finally, it is hoped that in the future, this optimization method can be widely applied, and further research can explore coordinated strategies among generation, network, load, and storage to advance the development of the power industry.

Curation meat products involves multiple stages, including pre-curing processing (thawing, cleaning, and cutting), curing itself, and post-curing processing (freezing, and packaging). Ultrasound are nonthermal processing technology widely used in food industry. This technology is preferred because it reduces the damages caused by traditional processing techniques on food, while simultaneously improving the nutritional properties and processing characteristics of food. The utilization of ultrasonic-assisted curing technology has attracted significant attention within the realm of meat product curing, encouraging extensive research efforts. In terms of curing meat products, ultrasonic-assisted curing technology has been widely studied due to its advantages of accelerating the curing speed, reducing nutrient loss, and improving the tenderness of cured meats. Therefore, this article aims to comprehensively review the application and mechanism of ultrasound technology in various stages of meat product curing. Furthermore, it also elaborates the effects of ultrasonic-assisted curing on the tenderness, water retention, and flavor substances of the meat products during the curing process. Besides, the implication of the ultrasound in the processing of meat curation plays a potent role together with other technologies or methods. The use of ultrasound technology in the process of meat curation was analyzed, which might be a theoretical insight for the industrialization prospects of the meat product.

The rheological properties of asphalt can well reflect its road performance, but the rheological properties of warm mix high viscosity asphalt (HVA) are unclear. In order to study the effect of warm mixing agent on rheological properties of HVA, two kinds of warm mixing agent EC120 (EC) and Evotherm M1 (M1) were selected to prepare warm mix HVA. The rheological properties of warm mix HVA at high temperature (135~195°C), medium temperature (0~80°C) and low temperature (-6~18°C) were studied by Brinell rotary viscosity test, dynamic shear rheological test (including temperature scanning, frequency scanning, linear amplitude scanning) and bending beam rheological test. The test results show that both EC and M1 have good viscosity reduction effect on HVA at high temperature, and can effectively reduce the construction temperature. At medium temperature, M1 can effectively improve the fatigue resistance of HVA, and the fatigue life can be increased by about 30% when the dosage is 0.6%. EC can increase the rutting factor of HVA and improve its resistance to deformation, but it will reduce its fatigue performance. When the dosage is 4%, the fatigue life will be reduced by about 9%. At low temperature, M1 can reduce the creep stiffness S, increase the creep rate m, and improve the low temperature performance of HVA, while EC has the opposite effect, weakening the low temperature performance of HVA. The results are helpful to understand the rheological properties of warm mix HVA and promote its application.

In order to solve the problem that the skid resistance of concrete pavement in tunnel deteriorates rapidly, which is easy to cause traffic accidents, the anti-skid rapid elevation technology of surface treatment is proposed. Wear tests were used to investigate the effects of concrete surface roughness, properties of modified emulsified asphalt binder and anti-skid fine aggregate type on long-term skid resistance of treated surfaces. The results show that the four coarsening methods of fine milling, milling, grooving and brooming can improve the skid resistance of concrete, and the skid resistance durability of fine milling and milling is better. The adhesive property of modified emulsified asphalt is the best when the content of water-based epoxy resin is 20%. In different aggregates, the anti-skid effect is better when silicon carbide is used as anti-skid aggregate and the particle size is 0.6mm:0.3mm = 2:3. The method of fine milling of concrete surface + spraying epoxy emulsified asphalt + spreading silicon carbide can effectively improve the anti-skid performance of the original concrete pavement, and the feasibility of the scheme is verified by the test road. The research results have a good reference value for improving the skid resistance of tunnel concrete pavement.

The growing interest has resulted in a continuous rise in demand for bioactive components, leading to the exploration of both edible and non-edible sources to obtain these valuable substances. Traditional extraction methods like solvent extraction, distillation, and pressing have certain drawbacks, including lower extraction efficiency, reduced yield, and the use of significant amounts of solvents or resources. Furthermore, certain extraction methods necessitate high temperatures, which can adversely affect certain bioactive components. Consequently, researchers are exploring non-thermal technologies to develop environmentally friendly and efficient extraction methods.Ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) is recognized as an environmentally friendly and highly efficient extraction technology. The UAE has the potential to minimize or eliminate the need for organic solvents, thereby reducing its impact on the environment. Additionally, UAE has been found to significantly enhance the production of target bioactive components, making it an attractive method in the industry. The emergence of ultrasonic assisted extraction equipment (UAEE) has presented novel opportunities for research in chemistry, biology, pharmaceuticals, food, and other related fields. However, there is still a need for further investigation into the main components and working modes of UAEE, as current understanding in this area remains limited. Therefore, additional research and exploration are necessary to enhance our knowledge and optimize the application of UAEE. The core aim of this review is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the principles, benefits and impact on bioactive components of UAE, explore the different types of equipment used in this technique, examine the various working modes and control parameters employed in UAE, and provide a detailed overview of the blending of UAE with other emerging extraction technologies. In conclusion, the future development of UAEE is envisioned to focus on achieving increased efficiency, reduced costs, enhanced safety, and improved reliability. These key areas of advancement aim to optimize the performance and practicality of UAEE, making it a more efficient, cost-effective, and reliable extraction technology.

Multi-frequency power ultrasound was applied as an environmentally friendly technique to control the nanoparticles (LS/XG-NPs) embedded with lotus root starch/xanthan gum, with the aim of enhancing the stability of Pickering emulsions. The present investigation was centered on evaluating the impact of ultrasound technology on various aspects of the emulsions, encompassing their mean particle size, particle size distribution, zeta potential, microstructure, rheological characteristics, and environmental stability. The findings of this study indicate that ultrasonic treatment enhanced the adsorption of LS/XG-NP onto oil droplets surface, resulting in a reduction in their size. Additionally, ultrasonic treatment decreased the viscosity and Brownian motion rate of the emulsion stabilized by LS/XG-NP, leading to increased fluidity. Furthermore, the emulsion's thermal stability and resistance to environmental oxidation were significantly enhanced through ultrasonic treatment. The Pickering emulsions that were prepared using ultrasound demonstrated excellent resistance to acid, alkali (pH 2–8) and salt ions (50–300 mM NaCl) for a period of 30 days during storage. It was worth anticipating that ultrasound-assisted LS/XG-NPs could efficiently retard the volatilization of fishy odor components within fish oil. Taken together, the present research has evinced the efficacy of ultrasound in enhancing the stability of Pickering emulsions coated with LS/XG-NPs. These findings offer significant novel insights into the advancement of ultrasound-assisted Pickering emulsions that are stabilized with starch-based or biopolymeric materials.

Surface runoff is a major component of the hydrological cycle, and it is essential for supporting the ecosystem services provided by grassland and forest ecosystems. It is of practical importance to understand the mechanisms and the dynamic processes of runoff in a river’s basin, and in this study, we focused on the restored montane Pailugou Basin in the Qilian Mountains, Gansu Province, China, since its water status is extremely important for the large arid area and local economies therein. Our purpose was to determine the annual variation in the surface runoff in the Pailugou Basin because it is important to understand the influence of climate fluctuations on surface water resources and the economy of the basin. In addition, little is known about the annual variations in precipitation and runoff in this region of the world. Daily atmospheric precipitation, air temperature and runoff data from 2000 to 2019 were analyzed by the calculation of the uneven annual distribution of surface runoff, the calculation of the complete adjustment coefficient, and the vector accumulation expressed by the concentration degree. We also used the cumulative anomaly approach to determine the interannual variation trend of runoff, while the change trend was quantified by the sliding average method. Finally, we used the Mann–Kendall mutation test method and regression analysis to establish the time-series trend for precipitation and runoff and to determine the period of abrupt runoff changes. The results indicated concentrated and positive distributions of surface runoff on an annual basis, with a small degree of dispersion, and an explicit concentration of extreme flows. The relative variation ranges exhibited a decreasing trend, and the distribution of the surface runoff gradually was uniform over the year. The runoff was highest from July to September (85% of the annual total). We also determined that annual surface runoff in the basin fluctuated over the 20-year period but showed an overall increasing trend, increasing by 3.94 × 105 m3, with an average increase rate of 0.42 × 105 m3 every ten years. From 2005 to 2014, the annual runoff and the proportion of runoff in the flood season (July to September) to the annual runoff fluctuated greatly. The correlation between the runoff and precipitation was significant (r = 0.839, p < 0.05), whereas the correlation between air temperature and surface runoff was low (r = 0.421, p < 0.05).

Understanding runoff dynamics is vital for effective water management in climate-affected areas. This study focuses on the Dayekou basin in China’s Qilian Mountains, known for their high climate variability. Using 25 years of data (1994–2018) on river runoff, precipitation, and temperature, statistical methods were applied to explore the annual variations and climate change impacts on these parameters. Results reveal a significant variability in the river runoff (132.27 to 225.03 mm), precipitation (340.19 to 433.29 mm), and average temperature (1.38 to 2.08 °C) over the period. Decadal rising rates average 17 mm for runoff, 17 mm for precipitation, and 0.25 °C for temperature, with the peak precipitation and runoff occurring in 1998–2000, 2008, and 2016. The annual runoff distribution also exhibited a unimodal pattern, peaking at 39.68 mm in July. The cumulative runoff during low periods constituted only 13.84% of the annual total, concentrated in the second half of the year, particularly during the June-October flood season. The correlation analysis underscored a strong relationship between river runoff and precipitation (correlation coefficient > 0.80), while the temperature correlation was weaker (correlation coefficient < 0.80). This 25-year analysis provides valuable insights into runoff variation, elucidating the interconnected effects of temperature and precipitation in the Dayekou basin, with substantial implications for sustainable development amid climate challenges.

Qinghai spruce forests, found in the Qilian mountains, are a typical type of water conservation forest and play an important role in regulating the regional water balance and quantifying the changes and controlling factors for evapotranspiration (ET) and its components, namely, transpiration (T), evaporation (Es) and canopy interceptions (Ei), of the Qinghai spruce, which may provide rich information for improving water resource management. In this study, we partitioned ET based on the assumption that total ET equals the sum of T, Es and Ei, and then we analyzed the environmental controls on ET, T and Es. The results show that, during the main growing seasons of the Qinghai spruce (from May to September) in the Qilian mountains, the total ET values were 353.7 and 325.1 mm in 2019 and 2020, respectively. The monthly dynamics in the daily variations in T/ET and Es/ET showed that T/ET increased until July and gradually decreased afterwards, while Es/ET showed opposite trends and was mainly controlled by the amount of precipitation. Among all the ET components, T always occupied the largest part, while the contribution of Es to ET was minimal. Meanwhile, Ei must be considered when partitioning ET, as it accounts for a certain percentage (greater than one-third) of the total ET values. Combining Pearson’s correlation analysis and the boosted regression trees method, we concluded that net radiation (Rn), soil temperature (Ts) and soil water content (SWC) were the main controlling factors for ET. T was mainly determined by the radiation and soil hydrothermic factors (Rn, photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) and TS30), while Es was mostly controlled by the vapor pressure deficit (VPD), atmospheric precipitation (Pa), throughfall (Pt) and air temperature (Ta). Our study may provide further theoretical support to improve our understanding of the responses of ET and its components to surrounding environments.

Several billion microorganisms reside in the gastrointestinal lumen, including viruses, bacteria, fungi, and yeast. Among them, probiotics were primarily used to cure digestive disorders such as intestinal infections and diarrhea; however, with a paradigm shift towards alleviating health through food, their importance is large. Moreover, recent studies have changed the perspective that probiotics prevent numerous ailments in the major organs. Probiotics primarily produce biologically active compounds targeting discommodious pathogens. This review demonstrates the implications of using probiotics from different genres to prevent and alleviate ailments in the primary human organs. The findings reveal that probiotics immediately activate anti-inflammatory mechanisms by producing anti-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-4, IL-10, IL-11, and IL-13, and hindering pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1, IL-6, and TNF-α by involving regulatory T cells (Tregs) and T helper cells (Th cells). Several strains of Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus reuteri, Bifidobacterium longum, and Bifidobacterium breve have been listed among the probiotics that are excellent in alleviating various simple to complex ailments. Therefore, the importance of probiotics necessitates robust research to unveil the implications of probiotics, including the potency of strains, the optimal dosages, the combination of probiotics, their habitat in the host, the host response, and other pertinent factors.

Oral mucosal wounds exhibit an increased susceptibility to inflammation as a consequence of their direct exposure to a diverse range of microorganisms. This causes pain, slow healing, and other complications that interfere with patients’ daily activities like eating and speaking. Consequently, patients experience a significant decline in their overall quality of life. Therefore, the pursuit of novel treatment approaches is of great importance. In this study, ginsenoside Rg1, a natural active substance extracted from ginseng root, was chosen as a therapeutic agent. It was encapsulated in a screened photo-crosslinked hydrogel scaffold for the treatment of mucosal defects in the rat palate. The results demonstrated that Rg1-hydrogel possessed excellent physical and chemical properties, and that oral mucosa wounds treated with Rg1-hydrogel exhibited the greatest healing performance, as evidenced by more pronounced wound re-epithelialization, increased collagen deposition, and decreased inflammatory infiltration. Subsequent investigations in molecular biology confirmed that Rg1-hydrogel stimulated the secretion of repair-related factors and inhibited the secretion of inflammatory factors. This study demonstrated that the hydrogel containing ginsenoside Rg1 significantly promotes oral mucosal tissue healing in vivo. Based on the findings, it can be inferred that the Rg1-hydrogel has promising prospects for the therapeutic management of oral mucosal wounds.

The topology of the distribution network and direction of the power flow will change when distributed generators (DGs) are connected to it, making it difficult to locate faults using conventional techniques like the impedance approach. Aiming at the two-phase short-circuit grounding faults of active distribution networks, this paper proposes a fault location method based on the time difference of the traveling wave modulus. The first step is the proposal of a zero-mode time-of-arrival calibration method for the ideal frequency band through the analysis of the attenuation of zero-mode traveling wave transmission. Next, define the relative wave velocity, research the quantitative relationship between the modulus transmission time difference and the zero-mode and aerial-mode wave velocities, and establish equation constraints between the modulus transmission time difference, relative wave velocity, and transmission distance. Then, time bounds and dynamic inequality constraints that establish relative wave velocities by fitting. Finally, combined with the abnormal data processing strategy, with the goal of minimizing the weighted deviation of the modulus time difference, the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is used to solve the fault distance. The PSCAD simulation result demonstrates that the method proposed in this paper has the advantages of high accuracy, strong error tolerance, and strong adaptability, and can quickly and accurately locate faults.

Producing starch gels with superior mechanical attributes remains a challenging pursuit. This research sought to develop a simple method using ethanol exposure to produce robust starch gels. The gels’ mechanical properties, rheology, structural characteristics, and digestion were assessed through textural, rheological, structural, and in vitro digestion analyses. Our investigation revealed an improvement in the gel’s strength from 62.22 to178.82 g. The thermal transitions were accelerated when ethanol was elevated. The exposure to ethanol resulted in a reduction in syneresis from 11% to 9.5% over a period of 6 h, with noticeable changes in size and color. This study has developed, ultrasound-assisted, a novel food packaging film (U-zein/SiO2) for food packaging applications. Incorporating an optimal concentration of 18 mg/mL of nano-SiO2 and subjecting the film to 10 min of ultrasonic treatment resulted in a remarkable increase of 32.89% in elongation at break and 55.86% in tensile strength. In addition, the incorporation of nano-SiO2 effectively reduces the water content and solubility of the composite film, resulting in improved water/oxygen barrier properties. These physiochemical properties were further improved with the application of ultrasound. The analysis of attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and scanning electronic microscope demonstrated that the ultrasound treatment improved the hydrogen bonds, improved thermal stability, molecular arrangement, structure stability, and intermolecular compatibility of the composite film, resulting in enhanced physio-mechanical properties of the film. In addition, the ultrasound treatment led to a smoother film surface and reduced the pores on the film’s cross-section. Moreover, the U-zein/SiO2 film exhibited excellent mechanical and water/oxygen barrier properties in different storage environments over a period of 30 days. A novel food packaging film was developed by incorporating a tea polyphenols-loaded pullulan/trehalose (TP@Pul/Tre) into a composite film with ultrasound-assisted treatment of dual-frequency (20/35 kHz, 40 W/L) for 15 min to assess the physicochemical and mechanical properties of a composite film. The optimized ultrasound-assisted significantly increases elongation at break, tensile strength, and improves the composite film's UV/water/oxygen barrier properties. Structure analysis using attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction and thermal stability revealed that these improvements were achieved through ultrasound-enhanced H-bonds, more ordered molecular arrangements, and good intermolecular compatibility. Besides, the ultrasound-assisted TP@Pul/Tre film has proven to have good antibacterial performance against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, with approximately 100 % lethality at 4 h and 8 h, respectively. Moreover, the ultrasound-assisted TP@Pul/Tre film effectively delayed moisture loss, oxidative browning, decay, and deterioration in fresh-cut apples and pears, thereby extending their shelf life. Thus, ultrasound has proved to be an effective tool for improving the quality of food packaging films, with a wide range of applications.

In enzyme-like catalytic reactions, the size effect of nanoparticles has been an essential yet unclear factor for the catalytic activity of nanozymes. Moreover, the synthesis of nanozymes with controllable size and electronic structures represents a grand challenge, which limits the systemic exploration the underlying nature of their structure–property relations and practical application. In this work, we proposed a novel strategy to regulate the size of Pt (0.55 ∼ 2.81 nm) by atomic layer deposition for precisely tailoring Pt-based nanozymes. The size-dependent electronic and kinetic effects have been observed for the peroxidase-like reaction and antibacterial process, revealing a volcano-type dependence of intrinsic activity on Pt nanoparticle sizes, and the optimum Pt nanoparticle size was found to be ca. 1.69 nm. A combination of kinetic study and XPS analyses, as well as multiple nanozyme characterizations, demonstrates that Pt nanoparticles with an appropriate size contribute to proper affinity to the substrates, relating to a high ratio of Pt0/Pt2+ on the surface of Pt nanoparticles, which is beneficial to obtain the excellent catalytic performance and antibacterial activity. Our work provides insights for an in-depth understanding size-dependent catalytic mechanism of nanozymes during antibacterial processes.

BackgroundFluorouracil (FU)-based chemotherapy regimens are indispensable in the comprehensive treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC). However, the heterogeneity of treated individuals and the severe adverse effects of chemotherapy results in limited overall benefit.MethodsFirstly, Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) identified modules tightly associated with chemotherapy response. Then, the in-house cohort and prognostic cohorts from TCGA and GEO were subjected to Cox proportional hazards model and survival analysis to ascertain the predictable function of SCG2 on the prognosis of CRC patients. Finally, we performed In vitro experiments, functional analysis, somatic mutation, and copy number variation research to explore the biological characteristics of SCG2.ResultsWe identified red and green as the modules most associated with chemotherapy response, in which SCG2 was considered a risky factor with higher expression predicting poorer prognosis. SCG2 expression in the APC non-mutation group was remarkably higher than in the mutation group. The mutation frequencies of amplified genes differed significantly between different SCG2 expression subgroups. Besides, CRC cell lines with SCG2 knockdown have reduced invasive, proliferative, and proliferative capacity. We discovered that the SCG2 high expression subgroup was the immune hot type and considered more suitable for immunotherapy.ConclusionThis study demonstrates the clinical significance and biological characteristics of SCG2, which could serve as a promising biomarker to identify patients who may benefit from chemotherapy and immunotherapy.

Abstract Background Long-term recovery of patients undergone cervical spine surgery is of paramount importance to improve their quality of life. In this study we aimed to evaluate the effects of foot massage on relieving pain and anxiety of patients with anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). Methods Enrolled patients undergone ACDF and diagnosed with anxiety disorder at least six months before surgery were treated with 10-min foot massage on a daily basis for four weeks using sweet almond oil. Patients were assessed by neck pain visual analog pain scale (NP-VAS), neck disability index (NDI) and self-rating anxiety scale. Results More significant relief in NP-VAS was observed in patients who received foot massage treatment. No significant difference in NDI reduction was seen in patients with or without the treatment. Intervention group demonstrated less anxiety during follow-up (p = 0.021) compared to the control group and more reduction compared to baseline (p = 0.046). In terms of quality of life, while both groups demonstrated improvement in pain relief (p = 0.015 for the intervention group and p = 0.037 for the control group), only the intervention group showed improved mental function (p = 0.031). Conclusion This study found that foot massage was effective in alleviating pain and anxiety, while improving quality of life in patients undergone ACDF, indicating that this intervention should be considered in the clinical management of these patients.

Multi-scale structural interactions of the arrowhead starch-linoleic/stearic acid complexes under different durations (20, 40 & 60 min) of dual-frequency power ultrasound (DFPU, 20/40 kHz) and their underlying mechanisms were discussed. Differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed V6 type (V6-I, II) crystalline structure for ultrasonically-treated arrowhead starch-linoleic acid (UTAS-LA) complexes. An increased degree of short-range molecular order as IR ratios of 1045/1022 cm−1 was evident from the FTIR results. The complexing index (CI) values of the complexes were greater than 65%, and the highest CI values of 83.04% and 81.26% were found in the case of UTAS-LA40 and UTAS-LA60, respectively. SEM results showed that LA-complexes had a sponge-like structure with smooth surfaces, while the SA-complexes exhibited flaky structures with irregular shapes and rough surfaces. The V-type complexes exhibited a higher digestion resistance than native AS and un-sonicated AS-LA/SA complexes due to partial RDS convention to RS.

Poor vitamin D status is a widespread problem regardless of age and sex, emphasizing the necessity of new food sources to improve vitamin D levels. Currently, approximately 60% of dietary vitamin D consumption occurs via fortified foods. Vitamin D insufficiency (50–90%) is widespread according to age and region, despite different levels of sunlight exposure. The food industry must identify more effective strategies to increase normal dietary vitamin D intake and improve overall health. Strategies for vitamin D fortification include bioaddition, wherein a vitamin D-rich food source is added to staple foods during processes. These bioadditive strategies expand the range of vitamin D-containing foods and appeal to different preferences, cultures, and economic statuses. In several countries, vitamin D deficiency places athletes at a high risk of disease susceptibility. Due to low sun exposure, athletes in countries with higher and lower levels of sunlight have similar risks of vitamin D deficiency. In this review, we summarize recent technical advances to promote vitamin D utilization by humans during sports activities and in relation to the normal practices of athletes.

Ultrasound treatment was used to successfully prepare Quercetin (Qu)-loaded Casein phosphopeptides (CPP)/chitosan (CS) nanoparticles. Compared with the control, the above ternary nanoparticles with the smallest size (241.27 nm, decreased by 34.32%), improved encapsulation efficiency of Qu (78.55%, increased by 22.12%) when prepared under following conditions: ultrasonic frequency, 20/35/50 kHz; the power density, 80 W/L; the time, 20 min, and the intermittent ratio, 20 s/5s. Electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interactions were the main driving forces for nanoparticles formulation, which were strengthened by ultrasound treatment. The compact, homogeneous and spherical composite nanoparticles obtained by sonication were clearly observed by scanning electron microscope and atomic force microscope. The environmental stability (NaCl, pH, exposure time, storage time, and simulated gastrointestinal digestion) and antioxidant activity of the ternary nanoparticles were remarkably enhanced after ultrasonic treatment. Furthermore, the ternary nanoparticles prepared by ultrasound exhibited excellent stability in simulated gastrointestinal digestion. The above results indicate that ultrasound not only increases the loading of the nanoparticles on bioactive substances but also improves the environmental stability and antioxidant activity of the formed nanoparticles. Ultrasound-assisted preparation of nanoparticles loaded with bioactive substances could be well used in the functional food and beverage industry.

Ultrasound has the potential to be broadly applied in the field of agricultural food processing due to advantages such as environmental friendliness, low energy costs, no need for exogenous additives and ease of operation. High-frequency ultrasound is mainly used in medical diagnosis and in the food industry for the identification of ingredients and production line quality testing, while low-frequency ultrasounds is mainly used for extraction and separation, accelerating chemical reactions, auxiliary microbial fermentation and quality enhancement in food industry. Magnetic fields have many advantages of convenient use, such as non-toxic, nonpolluting and safe. High-intensity pulsed magnetic fields are widely used as a physical non-thermal sterilization technology in food processing, while weak magnetic fields are better at activating microorganisms and promoting their growth. Ultrasound and magnetic fields, due to their positive biological effects, have a wide range of applications in the food processing industry. This paper provides an overview of the research progress and applications of ultrasound and magnetic fields in food processing from the perspectives of their biological effects and mechanisms of action. Additionally, with the development and application of physical field technology, physical fields can now be used to provide significant technical advantages for assisting fermentation. Suitable physical fields can promote the growth of microbial cells, improve mycelial production and increase metabolic activity. Furthermore, the current status of research into the use of ultrasound and magnetic field technologies for assisting the fermentation of rare edible fungi, is discussed.

The total phenolic content (TPC) from Cassia javanica L. petals were extracted using ethanolic solvent extraction at concentrations ranging from 0 to 90% and an SCF-CO2 co-solvent at various pressures. Ultrasound-assisted extraction parameters were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). Antioxidant and anticancer properties of total phenols were assessed. An SCF-CO2 co-solvent extract was nano-encapsulated and applied to sunflower oil without the addition of an antioxidant. The results indicated that the best treatment for retaining TPC and total flavonoids content (TFC) was SCF-CO2 co-solvent followed by the ultrasound and ethanolic extraction procedures. Additionally, the best antioxidant activity by β-carotene/linoleic acid and DPPH free radical-scavenging test systems was observed by SCF-CO2 co-solvent then ultrasound and ethanolic extraction methods. SCF-CO2 co-solvent recorded the highest inhibition % for PC3 (76.20%) and MCF7 (98.70%) and the lowest IC50 value for PC3 (145 µ/mL) and MCF7 (96 µ/mL). It was discovered that fortifying sunflower oil with SCF-CO2 co-solvent nanoparticles had a beneficial effect on free fatty acids and peroxide levels. The SCF-CO2 method was finally found to be superior and could be used in large-scale processing.

The effects of microwave pretreatment on the antioxidant activity and stability of enzymatic products from milk protein (MP) were studied. The peptide content, molecular weight distribution, and amino acid composition of MP hydrolysate were also measured to explain the change of antioxidant activity under microwave pretreatment. The results showed that microwave pretreatment increased the degree of hydrolysis of MP with the power of 400 W for the highest value. The DPPH scavenging activity and the total antioxidant capacity of MP pretreated by microwave with a power of 300 W presented the highest effect and increased by 53.97% and 16.52%, respectively, compared to those of control. In addition, the results of thermal stability and in vitro digestion of MP hydrolysate showed that the MP hydrolysate pretreated by microwave exerted excellent antioxidative stability, especially for the microwave power of 300 W. After pretreated with microwave, the peptide content increased as the rise of power and it reached the peak at the power of 400 W. The molecular weight of MP hydrolysate pretreated by microwave with the power of 300 W showed more percentage of peptides between 200 Da and 500 Da. The result of amino acid composition showed that total amino acid (TAA) content of MP hydrolysate pretreated by microwave with power of 400 W showed the highest value, which increased by 7.58% compared to the control. The ratio of total hydrophobic amino acids to the TAA of MP hydrolysate showed the most increased amplitude with the microwave power of 300 W. The antioxidant activity of MP hydrolysate was related to the peptide content, and it was also relevant to the amino acid category and content. In conclusion, microwave pretreatment is an effective method for the preparation of antioxidant peptides and an increase in antioxidant stability.

Transmissible gastroenteritis (TGE), cause by transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV), is an acute digestive and highly infectious disease in piglets. In this study, porcine interleukin-12 immunological adjuvant combined with a DNA vaccine bearing the TGEV-S1 gene was used to immunize piglets, and assessed the immune response of piglets. The results showed that CD4+ and CD8+CD28+ T lymphocytes were significantly increased in immunized piglets compared to control groups. In addition, the observed increase of IFN-γ suggested that T helper cells tended to convert to Th1 cells during immune response. HE stain and indirect immunofluorescence assays indicated obvious differences between the immunized piglets and the controls, suggesting that immunized piglets suffered less pathological changes relative to piglets in the control groups. Moreover, the levels of anti-TGEV and neutralizing antibodies in serum also indicated an effective immune response in the immunized piglets by which the pathogen was rapidly controlled. Altogether, our results suggest that the combination of pVAX1-(pIL-12) and pVAX1-(TGEV-S1) in a vaccine is capable of producing a significantly enhanced immune response in piglets.

Vascular inflammation and oxidative stress are the major causes of endothelial dysfunction leading to cardiovascular disease. Previously, we have reported the anti-inflammatory activity of zein hydrolysate and its-derived peptides. However, the underlying mechanisms have not been understood. In this study, we report that zein hydrolysate and its derived peptides can inhibit the tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)-induced expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), the adhesion of U937 cells to EA.hy926 cells and superoxide production in EA.hy926 cells. Zein hydrolysate and its peptides also suppressed TNF-α-induced down-regulation of TNF receptor 1 (TNFR1) and phosphorylation of p65 involved in modulation of the NF-κB pathway. Our study suggests that zein hydrolysate and its derived peptides exhibited anti-inflammatory activity via preventing TNF-α induced monocyte adhesion to endothelial cells and NF-κB activation.

Abstract Background Lipid rafts are major structural components in plasma membranes that play critical roles in many biological processes including virus infection. However, few reports have described the relationship between lipid rafts and porcine rotavirus (PRV) infection. In this study, we investigated whether or not the locally high concentrations (3–5 fold) of cholesterol present in lipid rafts are required for PRV infection, and further examined which stages of the infection process are most affected. Results When cellular cholesterol was depleted by methyl-β-cyclodextrin (MβCD), PRV infectivity significantly declined in a dose-dependent manner. This inhibition was partially reversed upon reintroduction of cholesterol into the system. This was corroborated by the co-localization of PRV with a recombinant, GPI-anchored green fluorescent protein, which functioned as a marker for membranous regions high in cholesterol and indicative of lipid rafts. Changes in virus titer and western blot analyses indicated that depletion of cellular cholesterol with MβCD had no apparent effect on PRV adsorption; however, depletion of cholesterol significantly restricted entry and post-entry of PRV into the cell. Both points of inhibition were restored to near normal levels by the addition of exogenous cholesterol. Conclusions We conclude from these studies that membrane-based cholesterol and in particular that localized to lipid rafts, is an indispensable biomolecule for PRV infection, and that cholesterol-based control of the infection process takes place during entry and immediately post-entry into the cell.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of low-frequency ultrasound on the enzymolysis of corn protein. A L9 (34) orthogonal design was used to optimize ultrasound pretreatment conditions. Degree hydrolysis (DH), conversion rate of protein (CR), and DPPH IC50 were selected as analytical indicators. Under the optimal ultrasound conditions (5 W/L power, 2 s/2 s on/off time, 50°C temperature, and 25 min time), the DH, CR, and radical (DPPH∙, OH∙) scavenging capacities were significantly increased. Molecular weight distribution and amino acid profile analysis showed that ultrasound pretreatment enhanced the formation of short-chain peptides with molecular weight of 200–3000 Da, especially the peptides containing hydrophobic amino acids. Moreover, 40 potential antioxidant peptides were purified by C18 semipreparative column and identified by UPLC-ESI-MS. The results suggest that the optimal ultrasonic-assisted enzymolysis technology could be useful for preparation of antioxidant peptides from corn.

The effects of trehalose on the antagonistic activity of Pichia caribbica against Rhizopus decay and gray mold decay of strawberries and the possible mechanisms involved were investigated. The proteomic analysis and comparison of P. carribbica in response to trehalose was analyzed based on two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. The antagonistic activity of P. carribbica harvested from the culture media of NYDB amended with trehalose at 0.5% was improved greatly compared with that without trehalose. The PPO (Polyphenoloxidase) and POD (Peroxidase) activity of strawberries treated with P. carribbica cultured in the NYDB media amended with trehalose at 0.5% was higher than that of the strawberries treated with P. carribbica harvested from NYDB. The β-1, 3-glucanase activity of strawberries treated with P. carribbica cultured in the NYDB media amended with trehalose at 0.5% was also higher than that of the strawberries treated with P. carribbica harvested from NYDB and the control. Several differentially expressed proteins of P. carribbica in response to trehalose were identified in the cellular proteome, most of them were related to basic metabolism.

We discuss instability and existence issues for the nonlocal bistable equation. This model arises as the Euler-Lagrange equation of a nonlocal, van der Waals type functional. Taking the viewpoint of the calculus of variations, we prove that for a class of nonlocalities this functional does not admit nonconstant $C^1$ local minimizers. By taking variations along non-smooth paths, we give examples of nonlocalities for which the functional does not admit local minimizers having a finite number of discontinuities. We also construct monotone solutions and give a criterion for nonexistence of nonconstant solutions.

Pseudorabies virus (PRV) is a double-stranded, DNA-based swine virus with a genome approximating 150 kb in size. PRV has many nonessential genes which can be replaced with genes encoding heterologous antigens but without deleterious effects on virus propagation. Recombinant PRVs expressing both native and foreign antigens are able to stimulate immune responses. In this paper, we review the current status of live attenuated recombinant PRVs and live PRV-based vector vaccines with potential for controlling viral infections in animals.

Porcine transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) and porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PDEV) can cause severe diarrhea in pigs. Development of effective vaccines against TGEV and PEDV is one of important prevention measures. The spike (S) protein is the surface glycoprotein of TGEV and PEDV, which can induce specific neutralization antibodies and is a candidate antigen for vaccination attempts. In this study, the open reading frames of the TGEV S1 protein and in addition of the S or S1 proteins of PEDV were inserted into the eukaryotic expression vector, pIRES, resulting in recombinant plasmids, pIRES-(TGEV-S1-PEDV-S1) and pIRES-(TGEV-S1-PEDV-S). Subsequently, 6-8 weeks old Kunming mice were inoculated with both DNA plasmids. Lymphocyte proliferation assay, virus neutralization assay, IFN-γ assay and CTL activity assay were performed. TGEV/PEDV specific antibody responses as well as kinetic changes of T lymphocyte subgroups of the immunized mice were analyzed. The results showed that the recombinant DNA plasmids increased the proliferation of T lymphocytes and the number of CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocyte subgroups. In addition, the DNA vaccines induced a high level of IFN-γ in the immunized mice. The specific CTL activity in the pIRES-(TGEV-S1-PEDV-S) group became significant at 42 days post-immunization. At 35 days post-immunization, the recombinant DNA plasmids bearing full-length S genes of TGEV and PEDV stimulated higher levels of specific antibodies and neutralizing antibodies in immunized mice.

Incidence and mortality due to tuberculosis (TB) have been decreasing worldwide. Given that TB is a cosmopolitan disease, proper surveillance and evaluation are critical for controlling dissemination. Herein, mathematical modeling was performed in order to: 1) demonstrate a correlation between the incidence of TB in HIV-free patients in the US and Germany, and their corresponding mortality rates; 2) show the utility of the newly developed D-R algorithm for analyzing and predicting the incidence of TB in both countries; and 3) inform us on population death rates due to TB in HIV-negative patients. Using data published by the World Health Organization between 1990 and 2009, the relationship between incidence and mortality that could not be ascribed to HIV infection was evaluated. Using linear, quadratic and cubic curves, we found that a cubic function provided the best fit with the data in both the US (Y = 2.3588+2.2459X+61.1639X(2)-60.104X(3)) and Germany (Y = 1.9271+9.4967X+18.3824X(2)-10.350X(3)) where the correlation coefficient (R) between incidence and mortality was 0.995 and 0.993, respectively. Second, we demonstrated that fitted curves using the D-R model were equal to or better than those generated using the GM(1,1) algorithm as exemplified in the relative values for Sum of Squares of Error, Relative Standard Error, Mean Absolute Deviation, Average Relative Error, and Mean Absolute Percentage Error. Finally, future trends using both the D-R and the classic GM(1,1) models predicted a continued decline in infection and mortality rates of TB in HIV-negative patients rates extending to 2015 assuming no changes to diagnosis or treatment regimens are enacted.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of the D-R model for defining trends in the appearance of Ceftazidime-resistant Escherichia coli. METHODS: Actual data related to the manifestation of Ceftazidime-resistant E. coli spanning years 1996-2009 were collected from the China National Knowledge Internet. These data originated from 430 publications encompassing 1004 citations of resistance. The GM(1,1) and the novel D-R models were used to fit current data and from this, predict trends in the appearance of the drug-resistant phenotype. The results were evaluated by Relative Standard Error (RSE), Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD) and Mean Absolute Error (MAE). RESULTS: Results from the D-R model showed a rapid increase in the appearance of Ceftazidime-resistant E. coli in this region of the world. These results were considered accurate based upon the minor values calculated for RSE, MAD and MAE, and were equivalent to or better than those generated by the GM(1,1) model. CONCLUSION: The D-R model which was originally created to define trends in the transmission of swine viral diseases can be adapted to evaluating trends in the appearance of Ceftazidime-resistant E. coli. Using only a limited amount of data to initiate the study, our predictions closely mirrored the changes in drug resistance rates which showed a steady increase through 2005, a decrease between 2005 and 2008, and a dramatic inflection point and abrupt increase beginning in 2008. This is consistent with a resistance profile where changes in drug intervention temporarily delayed the upward trend in the appearance of the resistant phenotype; however, resistance quickly resumed its upward momentum in 2008 and this change was better predicted using the D-R model. Additional work is needed to determine if this pattern of "increase-control-increase" is indicative of Ceftazidime-resistant E. coli or can be generally ascribed to bacteria acquiring resistance to drugs in the absence of alternative intervention.

The purpose of the current study was to identify potential ligands and develop a novel diagnostic test to highly pathogenic avian influenza A virus (HPAI), subtype H5N1 viruses using phage display technology. The H5N1 viruses were used as an immobilized target in a biopanning process using a 12-mer phage display random peptide library. After five rounds of panning, three phages expressing peptides HAWDPIPARDPF, AAWHLIVALAPN or ATSHLHVRLPSK had a specific binding activity to H5N1 viruses were isolated. Putative binding motifs to H5N1 viruses were identified by DNA sequencing. In terms of the minimum quantity of viruses, the phage-based ELISA was better than antiserum-based ELISA and a manual, semi-quantitative endpoint RT-PCR for detecting H5N1 viruses. More importantly, the selected phages bearing the specific peptides to H5N1 viruses were capable of differentiating this virus from other avian viruses in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays.

The aim of this study was to identify potential ligands and develop a novel diagnostic test to pathogenic bovine rotavirus (BRV) using phage display technology. The viruses were used as an immobilized target followed by incubation with a 12-mer phage display random peptide library. After five rounds of biopanning, phages had a specific binding activity to BRV were isolated. DNA sequencing indicated that phage displayed peptides HVHPPLRPHSDK, HATNHLPTPHNR or YPTHHAHTTPVR were potential ligands to BRV. Using the specific peptide-expressing phages, we developed a phage-based ELISA to differentiate BRV from other viruses. Compared with quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR), the phage-mediated ELISA was more suitable for the capture of BRV and the detection limitation of this approach was 0.1 µg/ml of samples. The high sensitivity, specificity and low cross-reactivity for the phage-based ELISA were confirmed in receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis.

Transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) is a porcine coronavirus. Lithium chloride (LiCl) has been found to be effective against several DNA viruses, such as Herpes simplex virus and vaccinia virus. Recently, we and others have reported the inhibitory effect of LiCl on avian infectious bronchitis coronavirus (IBV) infection, an RNA virus. In the current study, the action mechanism of LiCl on cell infection by TGEV was investigated. Plaque assays and 3-(4,5)-dimethylthiahiazo(-z-y1)-3,5-di-phenyl tetrazoliumbromide (MTT) assays showed that the cell infection by TGEV was inhibited in a dose-dependent manner, when LiCl was added to virus-infected cells; the cell infection was not affected when either cells or viruses were pretreated with the drug. The inhibition of TGEV infection in vitro by LiCl was observed at different virus doses and with different cell lines. The inhibitory effect of LiCl against TGEV infection and transcription was confirmed by RT-PCR and real-time PCR targeting viral S and 3CL-protease genes. The time-of-addition effect of the drug on TGEV infection indicated that LiCl acted on the initial and late stage of TGEV infection. The production of virus was not detected at 36 h post-infection due to the drug treatment. Moreover, immunofluorescence (IF) and flow cytometry analyses based on staining of Annexin V and propidium iodide staining of nuclei indicated that early and late cell apoptosis induced by TGEV was inhibited efficiently. The ability of LiCl to inhibit apoptosis was investigated by IF analysis of caspase-3 expression. Our data indicate that LiCl inhibits TGEV infection by exerting an anti-apoptotic effect. The inhibitory effect of LiCl was also observed with porcine epidemic diarrhea coronavirus. Together with other reports concerning the inhibitory effect of lithium salts on IBV in cell culture, our results indicate that LiCl may be a potent agent against porcine and avian coronaviruses.

problem with a small diffusion coefficient are studied in this paper. We prove that the solutions will develop single peaks as the diffusion coefficient approaches 0. The location of the peaks is also considered in this paper. It turns out that the location of the peaks is determined by the non-autonomous term of the equation and the type of the boundary condition. Our results are based on fine estimates of the energies of the solutions and some non-existence results for semilinear equations on half spaces with Dirichlet boundary condition and some decay conditions at infinity.
