Recovery of alginate extracted from aerobic granular sludge (AGS) has given rise to a novel research direction. However, these extracted alginate solutions have a water content of nearly 100%. Alternately, ultrafiltration (UF) is generally used for concentration of polymers. Furthermore, the introduction of multivalent metal ions into alginate may provide a promising method for the development of novel nanomaterials. In this study, membrane fouling mitigation by multivalent metal ions, both individually and in combination, and properties of recycled materials were investigated for UF recovery of sodium alginate (SA). The filtration resistance showed a significantly negative correlation with the concentration of metal ions, arranged in the order of Mg2+ Fe3+ + Ca2+ > Ca2+ > Mg2+. Three mechanisms were proposed in the presence of Fe3+, such as the decrease of SA concentration, change in pH, and production of hydroxide iron colloids from hydrolysis. The properties of recycled materials (filter cake) were investigated via optical microscope observation, dynamic light scattering, Fourier transform infrared, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy. The results provide further insight into UF recoveries of alginate extracted from AGS.

Hydrocephalus is a complicated disorder that affects both adult and pediatric populations. The mechanism of hydrocephalus development, especially when there is no mass lesion present causing an obstructive, is poorly understood. Prior studies have demonstrated that spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) develop hydrocephalus by week 7, which was attenuated with minocycline. The aim of this study was to determine sex differences in hydrocephalus development and to examine the effect of minocycline administration after hydrocephalus onset. Male and female Wistar–Kyoto rats (WKYs) and SHRs underwent magnetic resonance imaging at weeks 7 and 9 to determine ventricular volume. Choroid plexus epiplexus cell activation, cognitive deficits, white matter atrophy, and hippocampal neuronal loss were examined at week 9. In the second phase of the experiment, male SHRs (7 weeks old) were treated with either saline or minocycline (20 mg/kg) for 14 days, and similar radiologic, histologic, and behavior tests were performed. Hydrocephalus was present at week 7 and increased at week 9 in both male and female SHRs, which was associated with greater epiplexus cell activation than WKYs. Male SHRs had greater ventricular volume and epiplexus cell activation compared to female SHRs. Minocycline administration improved cognitive function, white matter atrophy, and hippocampal neuronal cell loss. In conclusion, while both male and female SHRs developed hydrocephalus and epiplexus cell activation by week 9, it was more severe in males. Delayed minocycline treatment alleviated hydrocephalus, epiplexus macrophage activation, brain pathology, and cognitive impairment in male SHRs.

As a product of phosphorous recovery from anaerobic digestion (AD) of waste activated sludge (WAS), vivianite has received increasing attention. However, key factors controlling vivianite formation have not yet been fully addressed. Thus, this study was initiated to ascertain key factors controlling vivianite formation. A simulation of chemical equilibriums indicates that interfering ions such as metallic ions and inorganic compounds may affect vivianite formation, especially at a PO43-concentration lower than 3 mM. The experiments demonstrated that the rate of ferric bio-reduction conducted by dissimilatory metal-reducing bacteria (DMRB) and the competition of methane-producing bacteria (MPB) with DMRB for VFAs (acetate) were not the key factors controlling vivianite formation, and that ferric bio-reduction of DMRB can proceed when a sufficient amount of Fe3+ exists in WAS. The determined affinity constants (Ks) of both DMRB and MPB on acetate revealed that the KHAc constant (4.2 mmol/g VSS) of DMRB was almost 4 times lower than that of MPB (15.67 mmol/g VSS) and thus MPB could not seriously compete for VFAs (acetate) with DMRB. As a result, vivianite formation was controlled mainly by the amount of Fe3+ in WAS. In practice, a Fe/P molar ratio of 2:1 should be enough for vivianite formation in AD of WAS. Otherwise, exogenously dosing Fe3+ or Fe2+ into AD must be applied in AD.

Alginate like extracellular polymers (ALE) recovered from flocculent sludge has been identified as a kind of highly valuable biomaterials. However, the extraction protocols limit the production of biopolymers as ALE extracted from flocculent sludge is at a lower level, around 90–190 mg/g VSS. Under this circumstance, the eco-friendly and effective optimizations for the ALE extraction protocols are expected, and thus surfactants have gained an attention to enhancing the ALE extraction. With this study, different surfactants with different structures and chemical characteristics, such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and octyl phenyl polyoxyethylene ether (Triton X-100), were experimented to improve the ALE extraction, and in turn the optimal conditions and the associated mechanisms were evaluated and figured out. The experimental results indicated that surfactants could enhance the ALE extraction but also improve the alginate purification of ALE. With the optimal dosage of surfactants, the ALE extraction increased from 124.1 mg/g VSS to about 222.8–281.9 mg/g VSS, and the alginate purify was at around 54%–70%, in which the efficiency of the ALE extraction was improved by 79.5%–127.2%. Among others, Triton X-100 had the best performance on improving the ALE extraction, followed by CTAB and SDS. The mechanisms of surfactants on enhancing the ALE extraction and improving the alginate purify can be attributed to: i) surfactants micelles, which can solubilize flocs and extracellular biopolymers; ii) similar structures of surfactants and ALE, which follows the rule of “like dissolves like”; iii) functional groups adsorption, which facilitates the ALE release from matrixes. In a word, the optimized extraction protocol by using surfactants can be effectively applied to extract ALE from flocculent sludge.

Sludge incineration and seawater desalination are two approaches that can be used in the disposal of waste activated sludge (WAS) and for obtaining fresh water. As resource recovery from wastewater treatment and water purification is a topic of particular interest in these times, “water mining” has become a focus of research, with phosphate/P-recovery from WAS incineration ash, and extraction of useful elements from the brine of desalination being important steps in the pursuit of a circular/blue economy. However, P-recovery from ash involves removing metals, which need to be disposed of carefully, as does the brine collected. If cations in the ash and anions in the brine could be combined in order to produce coagulants/flocculants, a new circular model would be established. A preliminary experiment for this purpose has demonstrated that a liquid poly‑aluminum chloride (PAC) could be synthesized from the aluminum ion/Al3+ removed from the ash and the original brine. With this work, we synthesized the liquid PAC by a hydrothermal method, and the results from infrared spectrometer demonstrated that the synthesized PAC was similar to a commercial PAC. Moreover, the synthesized PAC was able to efficiently reduce the effluent turbidity of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), especially when compared with the commercial PAC. It is therefore important that research in this area be continued in order to improve the quality of synthesized coagulants and to produce different coagulants based on cations and anions in ash and brine.

Developing sustainable and low-cost bio-reduction technologies is essential for vanadium (V) bioremediation in groundwater. With both agricultural waste (wheat stalk) being a solid carbon source and ceramsite and medical stone being auxiliary packings, V(V) removal was confirmed and optimized in this study. The ratio of ceramsite to medical stone was maintained at 1:3 in Group I, which accomplished a V(V) removal efficiency up to 97.5% within 120 h and an average removal rate was around 0.305 mg/(L·h). The dissolution and utilization of carbon and trace elements (Mg, Fe, Mo and Ni) by microbes also contributed to the V(V) bio-reduction enhancement. The main components of DOM (tryptophan and humic acid-like substances) were vital in the V(V) binding and electron transfer processes. This study could promote the current knowledge on the sustainable V(V) bioremediation by using agricultural waste and auxiliary packings.

When upgrading an aging wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), the sludge management line is always out of consideration in terms of cost and easy-operation. This study presented the dynamics of the sludge when upgrading a conventional sequencing batch reactor (SBR) to green bio-sorption reactor (GBR) by embedding alum sludge-based constructed wetland (AlCW). The aluminum (Al(III)) content in the effluent and the resultant impact on organisms were also evaluated. The results showed that the Al(III) residues was at an acceptable level (

The global energy crisis and water pollution drive the researchers to develop highly effective and less energy intensive water purification technologies. In this study, a highly active WO 3 @TiO 2 –SiO 2 nanocomposite was synthesized and used for photocatalytic degradation of persistent organic pollutants under simulated solar light. The optimum WO 3 @TiO 2 –SiO 2 prepared with 2 wt% WO 3 loading and calcination at 800 °C exhibited higher photocatalytic activity, as the rate constant ( k 1 ) for phenanthrene degradation was ∼7.1 times of that for the commercial TiO 2 (P25). The extremely large specific surface area (>400 m 2 /g) of WO 3 @TiO 2 –SiO 2 afforded it with enlarged pollutants adsorption performance and abundant active surface sites. The heterojunction of anatase with SiO 2 as well as loading of WO 3 decreased the band gap energy ( E g ) of TiO 2 , which extended the utilization spectrum of TiO 2 to visible region. Formation of Ti–O–Si band indicated the excess charges can cause Bronsted acidity due to the absorption of protons to compensate the charges. Moreover, the migration of photo-excited electrons from the conduction band of anatase to WO 3 and holes in the opposite direction restrained the electron-hole recombination. The photocatalytic degradation mechanism and pathway for phenanthrene degradation were proposed based on experimental analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculation, and the toxicities of the degradation intermediates were evaluated by quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) analysis. WO 3 @TiO 2 –SiO 2 also showed good separation (settling) performance and high stability. Our work is expected to offer new insight into the photocatalytic mechanism for WO 3 , TiO 2 and SiO 2 based heterojunctions, and rational design and synthesis of highly efficient photocatalysts for environmental application.

Conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) clean wastewater and minimize water pollution; but, while doing so, they also contribute to air pollution and need energy/material input with associated emissions. However, energy recovery (e.g. anaerobic digestion) and resource recovery (e.g. water reuse) allow us to offset the adverse environmental impacts of wastewater treatment. Life cycle assessments (LCA) have been used more and more to evaluate the environmental impacts of WWTPs and to suggest improvement options. There is a need to search for resource recovery applications that genuinely realize a net-zero impact on the total environment of WWTPs. In this work, a scheme with highly efficient energy and resource recovery (especially for thermal energy) is proposed and evaluated. The environmental impact of a conventional WWTP in comparison with the scheme proposed here, with energy/resource recovery included, was calculated, and discussed with reference to LCA methodology. In the process of using LCA, it was necessary to choose a regional situation to focus on. In this case, a Chinese situation was focused as a reference, but the qualitative information gained is of worldwide relevance. The results clearly revealed that conventional WWTP does not benefit the total environment as a whole while the new scheme benefited the total environment via resource/energy recovery-based processes. Among others, thermal energy recovery played a significant role towards a net-zero LCA analysis (contributing around 40%) which suggests that more attention and research should be focused on it.

In dealing with wastewater, chemical energy has traditionally been perceived as the only source of recoverable energy in moving towards the carbon-neutral operation of wastewater treatment plants. Based on an estimation of practically recoverable energy embedded in municipal wastewater, however, the potential for thermal energy (90% recovery from wastewater) is much higher than for chemical energy (COD, 10% recovery). The carrier of chemical energy (COD) has a high exergy value which should, from a sustainability point of view, be utilized to the greatest extent possible. Rather than being converted into methane (and subsequently into carbon dioxide), carbon (COD) contained in wastewater should be converted into highly valuable organic products. Thermal energy could be utilized for district heating/cooling, agricultural greenhouses, and even for drying dewatered sludge. In this way, thermal energy can indirectly offset the energy demand for wastewater treatment. The limitations in utilizing thermal energy are not generally based on technical difficulties; in fact, they can be mainly attributed to supply distances and governmental policies. It would, therefore, be greatly beneficial if municipal authorities would work together to jointly plan utilization of this thermal energy.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a technology for recovering chemical energy as methane from excess sludge/waste. Unfortunately, humic acids (HA) contained in excess sludge can have the effects of inhibiting the efficiency of energy conversion. Based on a batch experiment, the impact of HA on a semi-continuous AD process was sequentially investigated, with the impact on the associated enzymes and microorganisms being measured. The results of this semi-continuous experiment indicate that the inhibition of the microbial community increased with an increased HA:VSS ratio. Long-term cultivation did not result in the adaption of methane production to the presence of HA. Moreover, at HA:VSS = 20%, the strongest inhibition (74.3%) on energy conversion efficiency was observed in the semi-continuous experiment, which was two-fold higher than that recorded in the batch experiment. This is attributed to serious and irreversible inhibition of both acidogenic and methanogenic microorganisms, as well as the physical-chemical reactions between HA and the associated enzymes which, it was concluded, were the dominant mechanisms of inhibition in the batch experiment.

Traditional wastewater treatment plants cannot completely remove trace pharmaceutical and personal care products. In particular, quinolone antibiotics are mainly adsorbed on microbial cell surfaces in excess sludge and are released into the water environment during agricultural supplementation, mainly due to the exfoliation of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) caused by changes in environmental conditions. Here, the occurrence of seven typical quinolone antibiotics from three generations in excess sludge was investigated at trace concentrations using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). EPS facilitated adsorption independent of pH and quinolone antibiotic type, and the solid-liquid distribution coefficient decreased markedly as pH increased (pH 5–9, range of municipal wastewater). Metal ions bound in EPS were predominantly responsible for the adsorption of antibiotics in sludge, rather than the macroscopic size of the sludge floc. pH affected patterns of quinolone antibiotics, the zeta potential of sludge floc, and the contents of metal ions contained in sludge. The adsorption capacity of antibiotics first increased and then decreased with increasing pH in the range of pH 3–11, reaching a maximum (20,506, 14,458, 10,689, 22,854, 20,302, 8494, and 29,547 L/kg for CIP, ENR, LOM, MOX, NOR, OFL, and SAR, respectively) near pH 5, at which the cationic bridging of Ca2+ and Mg2+ bound in EPS played a major role owing to their larger ion radius and higher contents in excess sludge. Due to high surface heterogeneity of sludge, the Freundlich model was more suitable than the Langmuir model for describing the adsorption behavior of quinolone antibiotics. These results provide further insight into the release of quinolone antibiotics adsorbed in excess sludge, with potential implications for the agricultural use of sludge.

Sulfite has been widely employed as a key agent in many industrial processes, leading to a large amount of sulfite-laden wastes generated. Given its antimicrobial function and destructive ability on cell walls, detailed mechanisms for impacts of sulfite on waste activated sludge (WAS) and outcomes of methane production after the sulfite-pretreatment have not been clear so far. In this study, the feasibility of methane production from sulfite pretreated WAS was verified and investigated. Biochemical methane potential tests demonstrated that methane production from WAS after the pretreatment at 800 mg S/L of sulfite (a typical level in sulfite-laden wastes) increased by up to 25%. Kinetic analysis of the test results indicated that sulfite pretreatment increased the sludge hydrolysis rate (khyd) by 1.71 times while the ultimate biochemical methane potential (Bu) by 1.20 times. Further study investigated the effects of sulfite on WAS from the macro-scale (i.e. sludge physicochemical properties) to the micro-scale (i.e. bacterial viability, microbial community). Sulfite concentrations of up to 800 mg S/L substantially enhanced WAS disintegration and solubilization, reducing the particle size by up to 39%, boosting substrate release by 87% and improving cell lysis by 43% through the direct destruction of gram-positive microorganisms (e.g., norank_p_Saccharibacteria) in WAS. Adverse impact on anaerobic digestion by introduction of sulfite was not observed in this study, though a long-term evaluation is needed in the future work. Based on the findings of the present study, sulfite-laden by-products or wastes from industrial processes may be co-treated with WAS when overall cost-effectiveness is concerned.

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), polyphosphate (poly-P) and polysulfide or elemental sulfur (poly-S) are the key functionally relevant polymers involved in the recently reported Denitrifying Sulfur conversion-associated Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal (DS-EBPR) process. However, little is known about the structural dynamics and storage states of these polymers. In particular, investigating the poly-S generated in this process is quite a superior challenge. This study was thus aimed at simultaneously qualitative-quantitative investigating poly-S and associated poly-P and PHAs through the integrated chemical analysis and Raman micro-spectroscopy coupled with multiple microscopic methods (i.e. optical microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy, and differential interference contrast microscopy). The chemical analytical results displayed a stable DS-EBPR phenotype in terms of sulfur conversion, P release/uptake and the dynamics of relevant polymers. The multiple microscopic images and Raman spectrum profiles further clearly demonstrated the existence of the polymers and their dynamic changes under alternating anaerobic-anoxic conditions, consistent with the chemical analytical results. In particular, Raman analysis for the first time unraveled the co-existence of S0/Sn2- species stored either intracellularly or extracellularly; and the dynamic conversions between S0/Sn2- and other sulfur species suggest that there might be a universal pool of bioavailable sulfur. The results reveal the mechanisms underlying the structural dynamics and changes in storage states of the relevant polymers that are functionally relevant to the carbon/phosphorus/sulfur-cycles during different metabolic phases. These mechanisms would otherwise not be obtained only using a traditional chemical analysis-based approach.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a sustainable pathway towards recovering chemical energy from excess sludge, and humic substances (HSs) contained in sludge can inhibit energy (methane/CH4) conversion efficiency. This study aims to investigate the impact of humic acids (HA) on the various processes in a batch anaerobic digestion process. For this purpose, “clean” sludge was cultivated in a laboratory to avoid HSs presence. The cultivated sludge was used in a series of batch experiments, with humic acids added at different levels. A complete AD test, as well as three sub-phase tests (hydrolytic phase; acidogenic phase; methanogenic phase) was performed and analyzed with and without HA dosing. In the single-phase AD system, dosing with HA inhibited the methanogenic efficiency by 35.1% at HA:VSS = 15%. However, the effects of HA on the three sub-phases revealed something very different. HA inhibited hydrolytic efficiency by 38.2%, promoted acidogenic efficiency by 101.5%, and finally inhibited methanogenic efficiency by 52.2%. The combined efficiency of the three sub-phases without HA dosing is calculated at 15.7%; and with HA dosing (HA:VSS = 15%) at 10.2%. Overall, the combined inhibition efficiency of the three sub-phases is equal to 35.0%, which is almost identical (35.1%) to the result observed in the single-phase AD process. The possible mechanisms behind the phenomena were analyzed and summarized in the context.

Hydrocephalus has been reported to occur in spontaneous hypertensive rats (SHRs). The purposes of this study were (1) to use T2 magnetic resonance imaging to examine time of onset, (2) to elucidate potential underlying mechanisms and (3) to determine whether minocycline could prevent hydrocephalus development. Ventriculomegaly was evaluated by T2 imaging in SHRs and Wistar-Kyoto rats from weeks 4 to 7 after birth. Brain histology and transmission electron microscopy were used to assess the periventricular and choroid plexus damage. SHRs were also treated with either vehicle or minocycline. We found that hydrocephalus was observed in SHRs but not in Wistar-Kyoto rats. It occurred at seven weeks of age but was not present at four and five weeks. The hydrocephalus was associated with epiplexus cell (macrophage) activation, choroid plexus cell death and damage to the ventricle wall. Treatment with minocycline from week 5 attenuated hydrocephalus development and pathological changes in choroid plexus and ventricular wall at week 7. The current study found that spontaneous hydrocephalus arises at ∼7 weeks in male SHRs. The early development of hydrocephalus (persistent ventricular dilatation) may result from epiplexus cell activation, choroid plexus cell death and periventricular damage, which can be ameliorated by treatment with minocycline.

In biological wastewater treatment, the bacteria starvation always challenges the stability of system operation. Yet, the effects of starvation and possibility of reactivation are less understood for anaerobic sulfidogenic system. Sulfidogenic systems use sulfate as electron acceptor for organic chemical oxygen demand (COD) degradation, so it will encounter two kind of starvations: (i) complete stoppage of wastewater flow (named complete food starvation) and (ii) remaining organic COD but with very low level sulfate in the influent (named sulfate starvation). In this study, the relative long-term starvation (over 30-day) and subsequent reactivation were studied in two lab-scale continuous gas recirculation sulfate-reducing upflow sludge bed (CGR-SRUSB) reactors. It was observed that the complete food starvation and sulfate starvation decreased the COD removal rate (in the similar range of 60-65%) and the specific sulfidogenic activity (about 45% and 61% respectively), as well as increasing the sludge flotation potential (SFP) from15% to 58% and 35% respectively. Moreover, the following restoration experiments proved that the perturbed systems could be reactivated within 10-15 days for both cases. The results of investigating the mechanisms showed the performance deterioration were highly attributed to the starvation-induced granular sludge transitions, with respect to the changing of sludge physico-chemical properties (permeability, porosity, hydrophobicity and viscocity) and microbial stuctures (sulfate-reducting bacteria and extracellular polymeric substances). The outcomes of this study can provide useful information for dealing with the prolonged starvation problems in sulfidogenesis-based systems in industrial and municipal wastewater treatment.

Bioremediation of vanadium (V) pollution in groundwater is an emerging topic. However, knowledge of V in a biogeochemical process is limited and long-term effective removal methods are lacking. V(V) remediation processes by various kinds of auxiliary fillers (maifanite-1, maifanite-2, volcanic rock, green zeolite and ceramsite), agricultural biomass and microbial enhancing were explored in this study. In tests without inocula, the V(V) removal efficiencies of ceramsite (inert filler) and maifanite-2 (active filler) were 84.9% and 60.5%, respectively. When inoculated with anaerobic sludge, 99.9% of V(V) could be removed with the synergistic performance of straw and maifanite-2. TOC (Total Organic Carbon), trace elements and three-dimensional fluorescence analyses confirmed that maifanite-2 was the most suitable among various fillers in biological V(V) removal systems with straw. This study provides a collaborative method (adsorption–biology) by using straw with maifanite-2 in V(V)-contaminated groundwater. The knowledge gained in this study will help develop permeable reactive barrier technology to repair polluted groundwater to put forward a reasonable, effective and sustainable environmental treatment strategy.

The fate and behavior of radioactive cesium (Cs) in the water environment are of great concern. The involvement of bacteria regarding their accumulation capability for this element is the most fundamental factor that needs to be clarified even for exploring the interactions between many environmental factors that involve together in governing the transport and distribution of Cs. As the first systematical study that aimed to evaluate the accumulation capability of environmental bacteria for Cs, bacteria in the sediment of a freshwater reservoir and coastal water environment were isolated and multiplied for contact experiment with Cs under different temperature conditions (5, 25, and 35 °C). The accumulation concentration of Cs in bacteria from freshwater sediment varied in 3.95 × 10−6 to 5.68×10−4ng-Cs/cell, and that from coastal sediment in 1.52 × 10−6 to 7.41×10−4ng-Cs/cell, indicating obvious differences among bacterial species. Bacteria of coastal sediment possessed higher accumulation capability for Cs than bacteria from freshwater sediment, and temperature dependency was confirmed for bacteria from coastal sediment. The findings of this study have great reference value for better understanding and controlling the fate and behavior of radioactive Cs associated with bacteria in the water environment.

A high concentration of vanadium [V(V)] in groundwater is extremely harmful for humans. Weak movability and low toxicity after microbial V(V) reduction have attracted remarkable attention, especially for using solid carbon sources. However, the influencing factors remain unclear. In this study, the initial V(V) concentration, inocula amount and straw dosage were examined to ascertain the mechanisms behind them. Increasing the initial V(V) concentration led to the decrease of the V(V) removal efficiency, which was also positively correlated with the straw dosage within a certain range. The initial sludge amount was not a main factor affecting microbial V(V) removal in this study. With the initial amount of 10 mg L−1 V(V), 25 mL initial inocula and 5 g straw, 88.2% of V(V) was removed. According to the dissolved organic matter (DOM) analysis results, microbial activity prevailed in groups with higher V(V) removal efficiency, indicating that the V(V) bio-reduction was attributed to the microbial activity, which was considered a major factor. Functional species as unclassified_f_Enterobacteriaceae presumably contributed to the V(V) bioreduction, with upregulated ABC transporter genes and enzymes.

Hydrocephalus induced by intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is associated with unfavorable prognosis. The increased permeability of choroid plexus and breakdown of the blood–brain barrier (BBB) was reported as a prominent mechanism of IVH-induced hydrocephalus, and vascular endothelial–cadherin (VE–cadherin) was demonstrated to be relevant. Metformin was reported to protect endothelial junction and preserve permeability widely; however, its role in hydrocephalus remains unclear. In this study, the decreased expression of VE–cadherin in the choroid plexus, accompanied with ventricle dilation, was investigated in an IVH rat model induced by intraventricular injection of autologous blood. Metformin treatment ameliorated hydrocephalus and upregulated VE–cadherin expression in choroid plexus meanwhile. We then observed that the internalization of VE–cadherin caused by the activation of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) signaling after IVH was related to the occurrence of hydrocephalus, whereas it can be reversed by metformin treatment. Restraining VEGF signaling by antagonizing VEGFR2 or inhibiting Src phosphorylation increased the expression of VE–cadherin and decreased the severity of hydrocephalus after IVH. Our study demonstrated that the internalization of VE–cadherin via the activation of VEGF signaling may contribute to IVH-induced hydrocephalus, and metformin may be a potential protector via suppressing this pathway.

Entropy is a concept defined by the second law of thermodynamics. Applying this concept to the world we live in, entropy production must be minimized and negentropy (negative entropy production) should be accelerated, in order to produce a healthy and stable ecological system. The present wastewater treatment, however, contributes to entropy production. This means that conventional wastewater treatment, without recovery of resource and energy, will gradually but inevitably contribute to a deteriorating ecological balance. When the self-cleaning ability of the natural ecological system is limited, the need to develop sustainable wastewater treatment in order to delay entropy production and accelerate negentropy becomes urgent. Resource and energy recovery from wastewater should be the first priority, as they can contribute significantly towards minimizing entropy production and accelerating negentropy. Sustainable wastewater treatment must focus on recovering recyclable high value-added organic chemicals from wastewater and/or excess sludge to minimize entropy production caused by methane (CH4, once combusted, is converted into CO2 - an even higher substance in entropy) via anaerobic digestion. Instead of CH4, thermal energy present in the effluent can be utilized for heating/cooling buildings and also for drying excess sludge towards incineration to recover more energy. Overall, this can lead to a carbon-neutral operation and even creating a “carbon sink” could be possible for wastewater treatment.

Vanadium (V) in groundwater can pose a serious threat on both environment and health. Agricultural biomass contains solid carbon source (SCS) and could be attractive for biologically removing V(V). For this purpose, cypress sawdust, corn cob and wheat straw were selected as SCSs to remove vanadate (NaVO3). The experiments demonstrated a high efficiency of V(V) up to 98.6%, and the anaerobically biological reduction of V(V) to V(IV) by wheat straw was identified to be the best SCS by the spectrum analysis of XRD and FTIR. Along with increasing the fragment size of wheat straw, the V(V)-removal efficiency decreased, and the fragment size down to 1–3 mm was confirmed to have a significant bio-removal performance on V(V). Based on the analysis of 16s rRNA sequencing, the microbial abundance and diversity increased in the suspension liquid in the end, indicating that the microbial community could tolerate and/or detoxify V(V), besides degrading lignocellulosic materials.

The water content in the recycled alginate solutions from aerobic granular sludge was nearly 100%. Forward osmosis (FO) has become an innovative dewatering technology. In this study, the FO concentration of sodium alginate (SA) was investigated using calcium chloride as a draw solute. The reverse solute flux (RSF) of calcium ions in FO had a beneficial effect, contrary to the findings of previous literature. The properties of the concentrated substances formed on the FO membrane on the feed side were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, verifying that calcium alginate (Ca-Alg), which can be used as a recycled material, was formed on the FO membrane on the feed side owing to the interaction between SA and permeable calcium ions. Water flux increased significantly with the increase in calcium chloride concentration, while the concentration of SA had little influence on the water flux in FO. Based on this discovery, we propose a novel method for the concentration and recovery of alginate, in which the RSF of calcium ions is utilized for recovering Ca-Alg by FO, with calcium chloride as a draw solute.

OBJECTIVE Choke vessels, vascular anastomosis between adjacent angiosome, play an important role in flap expansion and survival. Here we established a flap model with single and multiple perforators to detect and compare the changes in choke vessels, discuss the effect of hemodynamics on the vascular morphology, and explore the underlying mechanism. METHODS One hundred mice (7-8 weeks) were subjected to a "choke zone" surrounded by 4 perforators on their backs. Delayed surgery was performed by the ligation of 1, 2, or 3 perforators to establish flap models. The blood flow of the choke zone was measured by laser Doppler flowmetry preoperatively and 6 hours and 1, 3, 5, and 7 days. The morphological changes of choke vessels in the choke zone were observed by gross and histological analyses. Levels of angiogenesis-related markers such as endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), metalloproteinase 2, hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α), and intercellular adhesion molecule 2 (ICAM-2) were detected by Western blotting and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS Blood flow and microvascular count were obviously increased postoperatively and peaked and were maintained for 1 week (P < 0.01). Meanwhile, the diameters of the choke vessels expanded. The eNOS level was increased at 7 days (P < 0.05); however, the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay results showed that the HIF-1α and ICAM-2 levels were decreased at 7 days. CONCLUSIONS (1) The delayed surgery that kept a single perforator had the greatest impact on the choke zone. (2) Changes in choke vessels were closely related to the shear stress caused by enhanced blood perfusion after surgery. (3) Choke vessel growth was regulated by eNOS, metalloproteinase 2, HIF-1α, and ICAM-2.

Excess sludge production by wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) represents a serious environmental problem that necessitates the development of effective sludge treatment/disposal methods. Excess sludge contains valuable materials such as extracellular polymer substances (EPSs), and their recovery is of great practical importance. However, conventional recovery methods afford EPS solutions with moisture contents of ∼100% and the dehydration of these solutions via direct drying methods is considerably energy consuming. Here, we investigate the separation of EPSs extracted from excess sludge by microfiltration (0.5 μm) and ultrafiltration (10 kDa), revealing that Ca2+ addition reduces the extent of membrane fouling during EPS isolation since the interactions between Ca2+ and EPS carboxylate groups increase the size and reduce the concentration of colloids/polymers in EPS suspensions. Additionally, we establish an ultrafiltration-based EPS separation protocol, demonstrating that it allows highly efficient EPS recovery (>90%) irrespective of the Ca2+ concentration, and show that EPSs extracted from excess sludge samples derived from two different WWTPs exhibit similar filtration resistances at Ca2+ concentrations of 0–4 mM. Finally, we demonstrate that the EPSs recovered from excess sludge can be used as adsorbents for the removal of diverse heavy metal ions (Pb2+, Cd2+, Cu2+) from wastewater, exhibiting performances that are on par with those of commercial adsorbents and are unaffected by the employed extraction procedure. Based on the obtained results, Ca2+ addition is confirmed to be a viable method for reducing filtration resistance during the membrane recovery of EPSs, since this ion does not affect the adsorption capacity for heavy metal ions.

Excess sludge produced by wastewater treatment plants contains extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs; 10–40 dry wt%) that mainly comprise polysaccharides and proteins and can be used as bioflocculants, adsorbents for heavy metal ions, and soil conditioners. Herein, we investigated the separation of EPS constituents using unstirred and stirred dead-end microfiltration in the presence of Ca2+, with an aqueous solution of sodium alginate (SA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) employed as an EPS model. Acceptable separation efficiencies were obtained utilizing filter papers with micropores of various sizes, which retained calcium alginate aggregates formed due to the SA-Ca2+ interaction but allowed BSA to be filtered out. Notably, a certain minimal Ca2+ concentration was required to achieve the above separation, with the separation efficiency being independent of the SA:BSA concentration ratio at Ca2+ concentrations exceeding the threshold value. The filtration resistance decreased with increasing pore size, Ca2+ concentration, and BSA content. Rather unexpectedly, variation of filtration surface shear could not be used to improve the filtration separation efficiency and reduce fouling in spite of the revolution rate, since the disturbing flow forced the aggregates into the filter pores. The polysaccharide in the EPSs was separated effectively by microfiltration with the addition of Ca2+. Thus, the obtained results provide further insight into the microfiltration-aided separation and recovery of polysaccharides and proteins in EPSs.

The Paris Climate Treaty implies the coming of a new era towards carbon-neutral operation in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), and thus energy self-sufficiency from biosolids and/or heat in the form of wastewater temperature has to be considered. In this regard, anaerobic digestion (AD) of sludge should be paid renewed attention to resolve a low conversion efficiency of biosolids. As a potential way to energy positive operation, exogenous iron has been proposed to enhance methane production in recent years. In this review, the authors provided a deep insight into the feasibility of iron-enhanced AD system. Hydrogen evolution from iron corrosion and its effects on CH4 production is firstly reviewed; then the roles of iron in reducing ORP was illustrated with regard to its impact on fermentation type; serving as an essential element and potential electron donor, the stimulating effects of iron on microorganisms and enzyme activities were also elaborated, and thus the technical feasibility of iron-based AD could be evaluated. In regards of the environmental and economic impacts of iron-based AD, life cycle assessment (LCA) was employed to calculate its economic feasibility, and the results revealed that iron-based AD system could reduce both operational costs and carbon emissions. Conclusion was drawn that iron-based anaerobic digestion is promising on technical level as well as economic perspective, and is expected to contribute to carbon-neutral operation of WWTPs. Iron-based anaerobic digestion is such a promising and sustainable strategy towards circular economy that it could be applied to many cross-disciplinary fields.

A decade ago, membrane bioreactors (MBR) were considered as a potential technology for replacing conventional activated sludge (CAS) processes. Indeed, MBR experienced a period of rapid development around 2009, especially in China. In recent years, however, there has been a sharp drop in the number of MBR installations all around the world – with the exception of in China. It is important to understand the reasons for this difference between the reactions of China and other countries. High-quality effluent and a smaller MBR footprint are also associated with high energy consumption and operational costs. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of MBR. In this study, a model (including capital and operational costs, operational efficiency and stability, resources saving and recovery and an evaluation of the sustainability index (SI) of MBR over CAS) was established to comprehensively evaluate the effects of MBR on economy, technology and management. The model calculations of SI demonstrate SI > 1.0. This means, briefly put, that MBR is not a sustainable process when compared to CAS, which is extensively applied but generally thought to be an unsustainable process. The sensitivity analysis of both related factors and weighted coefficients in the model reveals that there is almost no possibility of attaining SI

Zero valent iron (ZVI) has been extensively studied for reductive degradation of a host of organic pollutants including nitrobenzene (NB) in the water phase. However, little is known about the effectiveness for degrading soil-adsorbed NB, for which stabilized ZVI nanoparticles are often required to facilitate delivery of the reactive materials into contaminated soil. In this study, stabilized ZVI nanoparticles were prepared using a food-grade and low-cost polysugar, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), as a stabilizer; and the nanoparticles were tested for reductive degradation of NB in both water and soil phases. Compared to non-stabilized ZVI, CMC-stabilized ZVI nanoparticles degraded NB 3.7 times faster based on the apparent pseudo-first order reaction rate constant (0.643 min −1 for stabilized ZVI). Nearly 90% of electrons donated by ZVI were effectively used for NB reduction according to the reaction stoichiometry. Dissolved organic matter at 10–50 mg/L as TOC had little effect on NB conversion into nitrosobenzene, but decreased aniline formation rate by 30–58%; and higher pH (>8) favored the NB reduction. Based on the reduction intermediates and computational chemistry analysis, the reaction pathway was determined, showing that CMC-stabilized ZVI nanoparticles rapidly converted NB to nitrosobenzene, but the subsequent conversion of the intermediates (nitrosobenzene → phenylhydroxylamine → aniline) was relatively slower. When tested for reductive degradation of NB pre-sorbed on a model soil, CMC-stabilized ZVI nanoparticles could completely reduce the soil-sorbed NB (0.01 mmol/g) at a ZVI dosage of 0.6 g/L, and the reaction was limited by available electrons rather than desorption. The findings indicate that CMC-stabilized ZVI nanoparticles hold the potential to facilitate in-situ remediation of NB-contaminated soil and groundwater.

The recovery of polymeric substances from excess sludge is gaining significant research interest in future wastewater treatment technologies. We present a surfactant-enhanced ultrasonic method to extract mixed polymeric substances with typical functional groups from excess sludge. Four potential reasons were revealed for the higher efficiency upon ultrasonication with surfactant: low surface tension, damage of non-covalent bonds between extracellular polymeric substances and cells, enhanced dissolution of polymeric substances, and release of intracellular polymeric substances caused by cell lysis. The increase in extraction efficiency after the addition of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and sodium dodecyl sulfate reached the maximum of 76.5% and 53.1%, respectively. The contents of polysaccharides, proteins, and DNA were approximately 50% of the total polymeric substances, and the content of protein was higher than that of polysaccharide; the concentration change of the surfactant had a minimal effect on these contents. For the polymeric substances extracted via ultrasonication with surfactant, the size was smaller than that for the non-surfactant extraction; moreover, the contents of metals decreased significantly (Al: 0.18% → 0%; Na: 0.15% → 0%; Ca: 0.24% → 0.11%), which was probably caused by the interaction between the surfactant and metal ions in the excess sludge. The surfactant had a negligible effect on the properties of polymeric substances, adsorption capacity of polymeric substances for heavy metal ions, and dewatering performance of sludge. The recycled polymeric substances may be used as a substitute for commercial adsorbents of heavy metal ions. Thus, the obtained results provide further insight into the recovery of polymeric substances from excess sludge via the surfactant-enhanced ultrasonic method.

Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) are biopolymers that can be recovered from excess sludge, which could contribute to a more sustainable wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) operation. An example is alginate like extracellular polymers (ALE) contained in the biopolymers could be a potential resource with a highly-added value. EPS extraction for ALE from aerobic granules sludge (AGS) has already been well studied and applied in the Netherlands. On the other hand, there is little attention to the recovery of biopolymers from conventional activated sludge (CAS). In this study, flocculent sludge from eight CAS-WWTPs in China was collected and their EPS/biopolymers were extracted to investigate their recovery potential, chemical & physical properties and limiting factors. The results revealed that the biopolymers extracted and purified from CAS ranged from 90 to 190 mg/g VSS. The compositional characteristics of the biopolymers were observed by FT-IR, 3D-EEM and UV-Visible spectra, demonstrating some differences in the composition and property of the biopolymers from the different WWTPs. The biopolymers had a similarity of about 60% to a commercial alginate with respect to chemical functional groups and the alginate equivalent was >400 mg/g biopolymers. Moreover, the biopolymers consisted of poly (guluronic acid) blocks (20%-30%) and poly (guluronic acid-mannuronic acid) blocks (8%-28%), and the ionic hydrogel formation tests indicated that condensed beads were immediately formed once the drops of the biopolymers came in contact with CaCl2 solution. These results demonstrated that the biopolymers extracted had a relatively high gel-forming capacity and might also have a potential application as commercial biopolymers. Furthermore, the factors influencing the biopolymers’ formation such as influent substrate, nutrient content and microbial community and the related mechanisms were investigated. Among them, increasing soluble organics (SCOD) content and low nutrient content (C/N/P) in the influent could promote the biopolymers’ formation. Also, different bacteria in BNR processes might have positive or negative effects on the biopolymers’ formation. In conclusion, the diversity and abundance of bacteria were identified to be a crucial and decisive factor controlling biopolymers’ extraction and composition.

Alginate, a sustainable product, can be synthesized by organic substances in wastewater by aerobic granules. Although chemical precipitation is effective for extraction, this typically consumes considerable amounts of chemicals, causing chemical pollution. Alternatively, membrane separation can be used as a potential separation method. Resistance reduction and fouling mechanisms were investigated by constant-pressure dead-end filtration for the membrane recovery of alginate from a suspension formed in an aqueous solution of sodium alginate (SA) by the addition of Ca 2+ . Flux decline was analyzed by the Ruth's cake filtration theory and the Ruth's filtration coefficient, which indicated that feed filterability exponentially increased as Ca 2+ was added. The increased Ruth's filtration coefficient corresponded to decreased concentrations and average specific cake resistances of the components present in the suspension, e.g., colloids and polymers. The optimal amount of Ca 2+ should be economically feasible while also affording filtration resistance. Residual Ca 2+ in the filtrate can be reused. Residual salt ions increased filtration resistance. The filter cake formed on the membrane was compressible. The effect of protein on the ultrafiltration of alginate was considered. Microfiltration or filtration with a filter paper, exhibiting a high recovery rate of alginate, was suggested.

Methane (CH4) recovery from excess sludge plays an important role in wastewater treatment aimed at achieving carbon neutrality. Besides pretreatment for excess sludge, exogenous CO2 and even H2 have already been tested in enhancing CH4 production from anaerobic digestion (AD). However, exogenous H2 injected into AD might simultaneously influence both upstream acidogenesis and downstream methanogenesis. In this study, a series of batch tests were conducted to ascertain the influences of hydrogen partial pressure ( P H 2 ) on these two processes. Interestingly, the batch tests demonstrated that injecting exogenous H2 into AD at the beginning of each batch cycle can both stimulate acidogenesis (organic conversion rate) and enhance methanogenesis (both CH4 and biogas productions) at an appropriate P H 2 (=0.33 bar) and an optimal revolution (Rs = 200 rpm) of a shaker.

Phosphorus recovery from urine is a sustainable approach. However, the challenge of this process is the accessibility of economically feasible magnesium sources. This study aimed to investigate the potential of low-cost Rift Valley Lake magnesium (RVL-Mg) source for phosphorus recovery from urine, where data is deficient in the source area. The effect of various operational conditions such as storage, Mg:P ratio (0.8-2.0), pH (5.5-10.5), mixing speed (30-180 rpm), urease enzyme addition (50-700 μL), urine dilution (0.11-9.0) and Ca:Mg ratio (0.3-2.5) was investigated. Under optimum operating conditions (M:P = 1.6, pH = 9, urease enzyme = 500 μL, mixing speed = 120 rpm, 60 min precipitation), the phosphorus removal efficiencies were96% for actual and98% for synthetic urine. During storage, spontaneous phosphorus losses were observed from synthetic (24.0%) and actual (32.0%) hydrolyzed urine due to precipitation with calcium and magnesium. The phosphorus recovery efficiency was reduced at higher (0.11:1) and lower (9:1) urine to RVL-Mg dilution, which is related to lower supersaturation of phosphorus and magnesium ions, respectively. Addition of calcium did not affect phosphorus removal efficiency, but the effect was significant on crystal product. With low (1.0) Ca:Mg ratio, the crystal chemical analysis showed that the product has to be pure struvite (99%), which was further identified by scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction to be quality struvite that might be used for agricultural purpose. Overall, low-cost magnesium ion collected from Rift Valley Lake can be a potentially candidate for sustainable phosphorus recovery from urine and any other phosphorus containing waste stream.

BackgroundOur previous studies demonstrated that intraventricular injection of thrombin could induce hydrocephalus. The inflammation of subarachnoid space plays a key role in hydrocephalus. As thrombin, inducing coagulation, could contribute to inflammation, its effects on subarachnoid space have not been well studied. Macrophagic dysfunction may contribute to this course. However, the mechanisms that how thrombin affects macrophage in subarachnoid space have not been illustrated. Our aim was to explore the possible role that macrophage played in thrombin-induced meningeal inflammation, and to furtherly understand its contribution during thrombin-induced hydrocephalus.MethodsThere were two parts in this study. Firstly, rats had an intraventricular injection of saline or thrombin. Secondly, rats received thrombin injection with vehicle or PAR1 antagonist treatment. Immunofluorescence staining was applied to observe the activation of meningeal macrophage and the expression of NeuN in the cortex. Meanwhile, the expression of intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM1) in meningeal vessels were tested to detect the vascular inflammation. Western blot was applied to measure the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β and IFNγ).ResultsOur results demonstrated that intraventricular injection of thrombin caused significant activation of meningeal macrophages, vascular inflammation, and neuron loss. Inhibition of PAR1 pathway attenuated the M1 polarization of meningeal macrophage, reduced the inflammatory infiltrations and prevented the neuron loss, as well as hydrocephalus after thrombin injection.ConclusionsClinically available PAR1 antagonists may offer a novel therapeutic approach candidate for the prevention or the management of inflammation in hemorrhage-induced hydrocephalus.

With a high rejection coefficient for trace pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), forward osmosis (FO) membrane separation has become a cutting-edge technology in water treatment owing to its low energy consumption and low membrane fouling. Wastewater contains many types of PPCPs, and one pharmaceutical molecule affects the separation behaviors of other pharmaceuticals in FO. Therefore, simultaneous FO of multiple PPCPs needs to be investigated. In this study, the separation behaviors of four trace pharmaceuticals (ciprofloxacin (CIP), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), acetaminophen (ACP), carbamazepine (CBZ)), individually (termed “single pharmaceuticals”) and in combination (termed “binary pharmaceuticals” as two pharmaceuticals were studied simultaneously), during FO were investigated at trace concentrations using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). The results showed that for single pharmaceuticals, the molecular sieve dominates their retention rate—the retention rate increases with increasing Stokes radius of the molecules (29.1 → 94.8% for 0.35 → 0.47 nm). For binary pharmaceuticals, the retention rates of both pharmaceuticals without charge decrease with increasing total molecule number (for ACP + CBZ, 31.4 → 52.1% (ACP), 75.1 → 83.0% (CBZ)). Negatively charged pharmaceuticals are mutually exclusive with the negatively charged FO membrane, resulting in the increase of the retention rate of pharmaceuticals (83.1 → 90.1% (CIP) when CIP + ACP → CIP + SMX). In the presence of a positively charged pharmaceutical, the retention rate of negatively charged pharmaceuticals decreases (85.7 → 80.4% (SMX) when SMX + ACP → SMX + CIP) because the positively charged pharmaceutical neutralizes the negative charge on the FO membrane surface, resulting in the weakening of electrostatic repulsion between the negatively charged pharmaceutical and FO membrane surface. The positively charged molecule attracts the negatively charged molecule, forming a couple of molecules with larger molecule weight and increasing the retention rate of the pharmaceuticals (80.4 → 88.2% (SMX) when pH = 7 → 5 for SMX + CIP). The results suggest that the interactions between pharmaceuticals cannot be ignored in the process of removing PPCPs by FO.

A novel solar active AgBr/BiOBr/TiO2 catalyst was synthesized by a facile coprecipitation method for solar-driven water remediation. The synthesized material composed of flower-like TiO2 nanoparticles loaded on BiOBr nanosheets and with homogeneous surface distributed Ag/AgBr nanoparticles. The internal electric field between BiOBr/TiO2 heterojunction greatly facilitated the charge carrier migration; the introduction of narrow band gap semiconductors (AgBr and BiOBr) promoted the visible light adsorption; and the Ag/AgBr nanoparticles acted as photosensitizer to further improve the light utilization. The new material showed 7.6- and 4.0-times activity of pure TiO2 and BiOBr under solar light, and the contribution of reactive species on anthracene degradation followed the order of h+ > O 2 • − > •OH. The degradation mechanism and pathway were proposed based on intermediates analysis and DFT calculation. The QSAR analysis revealed that the environmental risks of contaminants were greatly reduced during the photocatalysis process but some intermediates were still toxic. The high photocatalytic activity, stability and adaptability all indicated that this new material owns great application potential for cost-effective photocatalytic remediation of persistent organic contaminants under solar light.
