Aluminum (Al) and its alloys have been widely used in daily life, but the absence of antibacterial properties makes them potential vectors for bacterial transmission. In this study, an Ag-doped TiO2 coating was successfully prepared on the porous surface of etched Al foil using the sol-gel method. The results indicated that the porous layer allowed the gel to permeate through the holes, thereby forming an interface carrying these antibacterial agents with a thickness of about 10 μm. The Ag dopant promoted the transformation of titania from rutile to anatase during the calcination process, with the rutile being absent when the atomic ratio of Ag to Ti reached 0.10. Meanwhile, the doped Ag+ was thermally decomposed into metallic Ag0. As a result, doping Ag enhanced the photocatalytic efficacy of TiO2 coating. Moreover, the antibacterial rate of this coating against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus under dark conditions could reach more than 99%, and the corrosion resistance of the Al foil was also slightly improved by it.

Abstract Patients with schizophrenia (SCZ) smoke up to three times more than general people. However, there are conflicting results regarding the relationship between tobacco smoke and clinical symptom severity in SCZ. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of smoking on clinical symptoms after antipsychotic treatment in a 12-week cohort study after controlling for confounding factors. One hundred and forty-five male patients with drug-naïve first-episode (DNFE) SCZ received antipsychotic monotherapy for 12 weeks. Symptom severity was assessed at baseline and at week 12 by the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). We found no differences in clinical symptoms among male smokers with SCZ compared with male nonsmokers. However, male smokers showed greater improvement in negative symptoms after 12 weeks of treatment, controlling for age, years of education, onset age, and baseline body mass index (BMI). Our study showed that after 12 weeks of treatment with antipsychotics, male smokers showed greater improvement in negative symptoms than male nonsmokers.

The academic study of work engagement among pre-service teachers during their practicum has been notably sparse, with even fewer investigations examining the influence of environmental stimuli on their engagement levels and the role of individual psychological and emotional factors throughout the practicum. To address this research gap, the present study, informed by the Stimulus–Organism–Response (SOR) theory, has developed a structural equation model. This model posits teacher support and peer support as stimuli, L2 grit and the foreign language teaching enjoyment as the organism, and the work engagement of pre-service teachers as the behavioral response. A quantitative survey was conducted among 516 preservice EFL teachers to examine the relationships among variables in the model. Findings showed direct predictions of work engagement by teacher support, L2 grit, and FLTE. L2 grit and FLTE sequentially mediated the relationship between teacher and peer support and work engagement. This study identified the factors influencing preservice EFL teachers’ work engagement, contributing to a deeper understanding of their psychological characteristics and emotional experiences during the teaching practicum. Additionally, the study offers practical implications for universities and internship schools to enhance preservice teachers’ work engagement during the practicum.

Students’ motivation and learning behavior are significantly impacted by parents’ participation and investment. It has been demonstrated that parental investment behavior could exert a direct effect on students’ L2 Motivational Self System (L2MSS) mediated by parental investment belief. Nevertheless, the relationship between components of parental investment behavior and students’ language learning motivation remains a topic necessitating further scholarly investigation. In response to this gap, we conducted a quantitative study involving a survey of 900 high school students to explore the relationship between students’ English learning motivation, as conceptualized by the L2 Motivational Self System and parental investment behavior based on a four-component model. The findings in this study indicated that high school students exhibited moderate levels of L2MSS and relatively low levels of parental investment behavior. Moreover, students’ L2MSS was found to have a significant positive correlation with the global parental investment behavior, with parental emotional investment behavior emerging as a positive predictor of high school students’ L2MSS. These results underscore the importance of parental provision of sufficient economic, relationship, knowledge, and emotional support in cultivating a nurturing and supportive familial context conducive to the development of students’ positive future selves.

IntroductionThis study examines the role of empathy theory in enhancing the effectiveness and timeliness of information dissemination during regional public health events, with a focus on the SARS and COVID-19 pandemics as case studies. Utilizing an anthropological interview method, the research delves into the public's transformation from passive recipients to active participants in information dissemination, emphasizing the impact of empathy.ObjectiveThe study aims to evaluate the application of empathy theory in the context of public health emergencies and to determine its influence on the quality of information dissemination and public engagement.MethodsThe research involved two distinct surveys, each collecting 50 questionnaires from participants in different regions, to capture a diverse range of perspectives. The surveys assessed participants' views on information dissemination, their levels of empathy, and their behaviors in receiving and sharing health-related information.ResultsThe findings indicate that empathy plays a crucial role in facilitating the active involvement of the public in information dissemination. There is a notable difference in the public's emotional response and information sharing behaviors between regions with direct experience of the health events and those less affected.ConclusionThe study concludes that empathy theory, when applied to information dissemination during public health emergencies, can significantly improve the public's engagement and the overall effectiveness of communication strategies. The results underscore the need for empathetic communication to foster a sense of solidarity and collective action in response to public health crises.

Background: The aim of this study was to address the intramuscular adipose tissue (IMAT) accumulation in the lower extremities and further detect the relationship between adipose tissue (AT) distribution in the muscle and glucose metabolism in subjects with obesity. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study in 120 Chinese obese adults (80 male and 40 female) with BMI ≥ 28 kg/m2. MRI was applied to access the IMAT content in lower extremities. The oral glucose tolerance test was used to evaluate the glucose metabolism and insulin secretion in all individuals. The correlations between glucose metabolism and the fat content of the lower extremities were further assessed. Results: Among 120 included subjects, 54 were classified as subjects with normal glucose tolerance (NGT) and 66 with impaired glucose regulation (IGR). We presented that those with IGR had higher fat accumulation in semitendinosus, adductor magnus, gracilis and sartorius than those with NGT (all P < 0.05). In sex-specific analyses, females have higher IMAT in adductor magnus than males (P < 0.001). Males with IGR had higher fat fraction of semitendinosus and sartorius than those with NGT (P = 0.020, P = 0.014, respectively). Logistic regression analyses revealed that IMAT content in semitendinosus was the independent factor of IGR in individuals with obesity after adjustment for age, gender, triglycerides, creatinine and albumin (odds ratio: 1.13, 95% CI: 1.02–1.26, P = 0.024). Conclusions: Increased adipose tissue accumulation in thigh muscles was associated with glucose dysregulation in patients with obesity. IMAT content in semitendinosus may serve as a possible risk factor for impaired glucose metabolism.

Abstract Background Despite inconsistent findings, accumulative evidence has shown abnormalities of the key antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase (SOD), in patients with schizophrenia. However, few studies explored SOD in late-life schizophrenia (LLS). Our work aimed to investigate changes in SOD activity and the relationship between SOD activity and psychotic symptoms or cognitive deficits in LLS. Methods 32 geriatric male patients with schizophrenia (age ≥ 60) and 28 age-matched male normal controls were recruited in the study. We assessed cognitive functions with the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS), evaluated the severity of clinical symptoms with the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), and measured the plasma levels of SOD. It is essential to understand the in-situ geomechanical properties of natural gas hydrate-bearing reservoirs for hydrate drilling, the design of reservoir stimulation and production schemes, geologic disaster prevention, and environmental impact assessment. In this way, it serves as the basis for the development and utilization of gas hydrate resources. In 2016, the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey conducted the fourth natural gas hydrate drilling (Expedition GMGS4) in the north of the South China Sea, during which the effective stress of gas hydrate-bearing reservoirs in the study area was ascertained and gas hydrate-bearing pressure cores were collected. The effective stress was determined to be 700–800 kPa by in-situ piezocone penetration tests. The saturation, permeability, and shear strength of gas hydrates in the pressure core samples were measured under the in-situ stress state using the shipboard multi-sensor core logger (MSCL), pressure core analysis and transfer system (PCATS), and PCATS Triaxial system. Based on this, the distribution characteristics and the relationship of the permeability and gas hydrate saturation of the gas hydrate-bearing reservoirs were explored. Furthermore, the effects of effective stress and gas hydrate saturation on shear strength of gas hydrate-bearing clayey-silt sediments were mainly analyzed, as well as the stress–strain characteristics of gas hydrate-bearing sediments. The results are as follows: (i) the gas hydrate saturation and reservoir permeability in the study area are 0.7%–55% and 10−3–10−1mD, respectively, indicating low-permeability reservoirs; (ii) the gas hydrate saturation and reservoir permeability have obvious anisotropy in horizontal and vertical directions; (iii) the undrained shear strength of gas hydrate-bearing sediments is 0.24–0.52 MPa, and the shear strength of fine-grained sediments is more sensitive to the changes of in-situ stress. In the case that deviatoric stress continues increasing, micro-fractures may occur inside gas hydrate-bearing sediments, and this can lead to drastic changes in the strength of gas hydrate-bearing reservoirs. Therefore, it is necessary to take into account the effects of micro-fractures in gas hydrate-bearing reservoirs on engineering safety during long-term hydrate production.

Abstract A series of experiments were conducted to investigate flow pattern transitions and concentration distribution during simultaneous pipe flow of oil–water two-phase flow through the horizontal and vertical sections. The flowing media applied were white mineral oil and distilled water. Superficial oil and water velocities were between 0 and 0.57 m/s. Flow pattern maps revealed that the horizontal and vertical sections of the pipe lead to different flow pattern characteristics under the same flow conditions. The original contributions of this work are that a transition mechanism for predicting the boundary between oil-in-water (O/W) flow and water-in-oil (W/O) in oil–water two-phase flow was obtained. The effects of input water cut, oil and water superficial velocities on the concentration distribution of the dispersed phase were studied. The empirical formulas for the phase holdup based on the drift-flux model were obtained. The predicted results agreed well with those of the experimental data, especially for the O/W flow pattern.

ObjectiveThe prevalence and clinically associated factors of hyperuricemia (HUA) have been widely studied in the general population but rarely in patients with bipolar disorder (BPD) co-morbid with HUA. This study attempted to investigate the prevalence of HUA in BPD patients and analyze the associated correlates of HUA.Materials and methodsIn this study, 182 outpatients with BPD and 182 healthy controls participated. The demographic and clinical information were collected. The body weight, height, waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), and blood pressure (BP) were measured. The levels of serum uric acid (UA), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C), and fasting blood glucose (FBG) were also determined.ResultsBPD patients had a significantly higher prevalence of HUA (40.7%) compared to healthy controls (30.2%) (χ2 = 4.335, P = 0.037). The systolic blood pressure (SBP), pulse pressure (PP), FBG, UA, and body mass index (BMI) were higher in the BPD group compared with those in the control group, while the diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and HDL-C level were lower (P < 0.05) in BPD patients. The prevalence of HUA was higher in BPD patients who used antipsychotics combined with mood stabilizers than that in BPD subjects receiving the mood stabilizers alone (P < 0.001). The prevalence of HUA and increased serum UA levels were higher in the manic group (62.1%) than in the depressive (34.3%) or euthymia group (17.0%) (P < 0.001). Additionally, the severity of mania was positively correlated with the UA level (r = 0.410, P < 0.001). There were significant differences in terms of MetS (29.7% vs. 14.8%), BMI, HC, WC, TG, and HDL-C between the HUA and the non-HUA groups (P < 0.05). The unconditional logistic regression analysis revealed that high BMI (OR = 1.210; 95%CI: 1.100–1.331) and high TG level (OR = 1.652; 95%CI: 1.058–2.580) were the major risk factorids for HUA in BPD patients.ConclusionOur study suggests that patients with BPD are prone to metabolic diseases such as HUA. Higher serum levels of TG and high BMI could be associated with HUA development. Clinicians need to regularly monitor and evaluate BPD patients for their serum UA levels, especially for BPD patients with manic/hypomanic episodes and/or under the treatment of antipsychotics combined with mood stabilizers.

A separate-bottom Couette cell is used to carry out ring-shear tests on sand and hydrate, and the evolution of shear bands is recognized using the tracer method. Based on experimental verification, a numerical simulation method is applied to study the shear band variation law with the height and strength of the sample. Analyzing the distribution of stress and strain gives a dimensionless number (c+ρgH·tgφ)H/αGL that affects the characteristics of the shear band, which indicates that the evolution direction and form of the shear band are controlled by the stiffness ratio of strength to load. Furthermore, the dimensionless law of the height and width of the shear band is given quantitatively.

Objectives: There are relatively few studies on mechanisms of cognitive deficits in late-life schizophrenia (LLS). Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), as an important neuroplastic molecule, has been reported to be involved in neurocognitive impairment in schizophrenia. This study aimed to examine whether peripheral BDNF levels were associated with cognitive deficits in LLS, which has not been explored yet.Methods: Forty-eight LLS patients and 45 age-matched elderly controls were recruited. We measured all participants on the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) for cognition and serum BDNF levels. Psychopathological symptoms in patients were assessed by the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS).Results: The levels of BDNF in LLS patients were significantly lower than those in healthy controls (8.80 ± 2.30 vs. 12.63 ± 5.08 ng/ml, p < 0.001). The cognitive performance of LLS patients was worse than that of the controls on RBANS total score and scores of immediate memory, attention, language, and delayed memory (all p ≤ 0.005). BDNF was positively associated with attention in LLS patients (r = 0.338, p = 0.019).Conclusion: Our findings suggest that older patients with schizophrenia exhibit lower BDNF levels and more cognitive deficits than older controls, supporting the accelerated aging hypothesis of schizophrenia. Moreover, decreased BDNF is related to attention deficits, indicating that BDNF might be a candidate biomarker of cognitive impairments in LLS patients.

Natural gas hydrates are a strategic energy resource in China. The China Geological Survey has discovered segregated hydrate mass formations under the seepage mechanism in the South China Sea through exploration, and gas hydrates occur in nodular, massive, and vein formations in silty clay sediment. Previous work has focused on the analysis of sediment mechanical properties with respect to the uniform distribution of natural gas hydrates in pore spaces, but the mechanical properties of hydrate-bearing sediments containing segregated hydrate masses are not well understood. Spherical hydrates are used to characterize nodular hydrates, a method is proposed for the preparation of sediment samples containing segregated hydrates masses, and a series of triaxial compression tests are carried out on the samples containing spherical hydrates with two kinds of particle sizes at a certain volume fraction. The paper presents triaxial stress–strain curves for the samples containing spherical hydrates. A model for predicting elastic modulus is established. The results present two distinct stages in the triaxial compression tests of silty clay sediments containing spherical hydrates; they also show that the elastic moduli predicted by the model are in good agreement with the experimental results when the model parameters are set at α = 0.5 and β = −0.21. These results provide fundamental mechanical parameters for the safety evaluation of strata containing segregated gas hydrates.

When two electric multiple units are non-electrically connected together for improving the transport capacity in high-speed railways, double pantographs frequently operate simultaneously to decrease the current capacity on a single pantograph collector. In this case, the contact force between the trailing pantograph and the catenary severely fluctuates due to the wave propagation along the catenary triggered by the leading pantograph. Therefore, this paper proposes two estimator-based H ∞ control strategies for active double-pantograph to decrease the contact force fluctuation considering the actuator time delay. To obtain the pantograph states, a robust recursive state estimation method is presented, which can effectively deal with randomly missing measurements. In addition, to overcome parametric uncertainties and non-differentiable actuator time delay, two robust multi-objective H ∞ controllers involving linear matrix inequalities are introduced according to whether the time delay can be predetermined or not. The effectiveness and robustness of the control strategies are investigated through implementing a nonlinear double-pantograph-catenary system model. Simulation results show that, for both the leading pantograph and the trailing pantograph, the proposed control strategies can decrease the contact force fluctuation with high efficiency even though the actuator time delay exists.

The poor physical property and strong heterogeneity of Triassic Yanchang formation in Huanjiang oilfield of Ordos Basin are the main reasons for uneven water absorption, partial injection wells underinjection at high pressure, and decline of production. Previously, large numbers of conventional acidifications were used for plugging removal in the reservoir, but the effect was not so good and effective period was short. Aiming at the geological characteristics of Huanjiang oilfield, an online shunt acidification and augmented injection technology which does not stop water injection, pull original production strings out, and continuously inject acid and diverting agent has been proposed. A chelating acid COA-1S with low corrosion rate (0.3675 g/(m2·h)), good retardation capacity (hydrolysis constant = 1.2 × 10−6), and effective chelating ability (precipitation inhibition rate >95%) has been developed, as well as a diverting agent COA-1P with good dispersion in acid solution, diversion effect, and particle size (10–100 μm), which behaves well in COA-1S acid. It has been proved that the online acid system has a good diversion acidizing ability and plugging removal performance in a deep area in the laboratory core physical simulation test. The field test results show that the online shunt acidizing and augmented injection technology could reduce the injection pressure significantly (4.2 MPa) and increase water injection by 10 m3/d for the measured well (H5) and improve the water injection profile prominently. The online shunting acidification and augmented injection technology have the following advantages: simple procedures, fewer equipment needed, high efficiency of depressurization, and increasing water injection, which could effectively improve the profile of water wells, and there is a bright future of the technology.

The numerical tools can be used to facilitate the design of the railway pantograph-catenary system. The validation of the current numerical results is mostly performed at a speed slower than 350 km/h. This paper aims at the validation and analysis of the numerical results at a super-high-speed. The catenary model is constructed based on a nonlinear finite element approach employing the absolute nodal coordinate formulation. A multibody dynamics model is adopted to represent the pantograph. The measurement data are collected by an inspection vehicle equipped with an instrumented pantograph operating at 378 km/h in Chengdu-Chongqing high-speed line. Comparing the numerical simulation and the field test shows that the present pantograph-catenary model can provide reliable numerical results at 378 km/h. The numerical analysis of pantograph-catenary interaction at super-high-speed shows that the trailing pantograph performance does not comply with the assessment standard at 378 km/h. The adjustment of double-pantograph interval and messenger wire tension can effectively improve the trailing pantograph performance.

Objective: Depression has a high incidence of somatic pain, and the mechanism of pain in depressed patients remains unclear. Our study explored brain areas with abnormal activity in first-episode major depressive disorder with somatic pain using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rfMRI) and the relationship between depression and somatic pain. Methods: Thirty-two depressed patients (sixteen with somatic pain and sixteen without somatic pain) diagnosed with major depressive disorder by the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV and thirty-three healthy controls were scanned by rfMRI. Regional homogeneity (ReHo) was used to analyze differences between depressed patients with somatic pain and those without somatic pain. Results: ReHo values in the left postcentral gyrus (postcentral_l) and the left precentral gyrus (precentral_l) of the depressed patients with somatic pain were significantly higher than those in the patients without somatic pain (tpostcentral_l = 4.93, ppostcentral_l

Nervous necrosis virus (NNV) can infect many species of fish and causes serious acute or persistent infection. However, its pathogenic mechanism is still far from clear. Specific cellular surface receptors are crucial determinants of the species tropism of a virus and its pathogenesis. Here, the heat shock protein 90ab1 of marine model fish species marine medaka (MmHSP90ab1) was identified as a novel receptor of red-spotted grouper NNV (RGNNV). MmHSP90ab1 interacted directly with RGNNV capsid protein (CP). Specifically, MmHSP90ab1 bound to the linker region (LR) of CP through its NM domain. Inhibition of MmHSP90ab1 by HSP90-specific inhibitors or MmHSP90ab1 siRNA caused significant inhibition of viral binding and entry, whereas its overexpression led to the opposite effect. The binding of RGNNV to cultured marine medaka hMMES1 cells was inhibited by blocking cell surface-localized MmHSP90ab1 with anti-HSP90β antibodies or pretreating virus with recombinant MmHSP90ab1 or MmHSP90ab1-NM protein, indicating MmHSP90ab1 was an attachment receptor for RGNNV. Furthermore, we found that MmHSP90ab1 formed a complex with CP and marine medaka heat shock cognate 70, a known NNV receptor. Exogenous expression of MmHSP90ab1 independently facilitated the internalization of RGNNV into RGNNV impenetrable cells (HEK293T), which was blocked by chlorpromazine, an inhibitor of clathrin-dependent endocytosis. Further study revealed that MmHSP90ab1 interacted with the marine medaka clathrin heavy chain. Collectively, these data suggest that MmHSP90ab1 is a functional part of the RGNNV receptor complex and involved in the internalization of RGNNV via the clathrin endocytosis pathway.

Multi-fractured horizontal wells are commonly employed to improve the productivity of low and ultra-low permeability gas reservoirs. However, conventional productivity models for open-hole multi-fractured horizontal wells do not consider the interferences between hydraulic fractures and the open-hole segments, resulting in significant errors in calculation results. In this article, a novel productivity prediction model for gas reservoirs with open-hole multi-fractured horizontal wells was proposed based on complex potential theories, potential superimposition, and numerical analysis. Herein, an open-hole segment between two adjacent fractures was regarded as an equivalent fracture, which was discretized as in cases of artificial fractures. The proposed model was then applied to investigate the effects of various parameters, such as the angle between the fracture and horizontal shaft, fracture quantity, fracture length, diversion capacity of fractures, horizontal well length, and inter-fracture distance, on the productivity of low permeability gas reservoirs with multi-fractured horizontal wells. Simulation results revealed that the quantity, length, and distribution of fractures had significant effects on the productivity of low permeability gas reservoirs while the effects of the diversion capacity of fractures and the angle between the fracture and horizontal shaft were negligible. Additionally, a U-shaped distribution of fracture lengths was preferential as the quantity of fractures at shaft ends was twice that in the middle area. The occurrence of a shear band is often thought as the precursor of failure. To study the initiation of shear banding in gas hydrate-bearing sediments, two groups of triaxial compression tests combined with a CT (computer tomography) scan were conducted by triaxial CT-integrated equipment under two confining pressures and seven hydrate saturations. The macro stress–strain curves and the corresponding CT scanning images of the micro-structure and the distribution of the components were obtained. The geometric parameters of the shear bands were measured based on the CT images at four typical axial strains, respectively. The distribution characteristics of soil particles, water, hydrate and gas were also analyzed. It is shown that the existence of methane hydrate changes the mechanical property of hydrate-bearing sediment from plastic failure to brittle failure when the hydrate saturation is over 13%, which occurs in the range of the tests in this paper. The peak of the deviatoric stress increases with the hydrate saturation. The shear band is in either a single oblique line or inter-cross lines depending on the hydrate saturation, the effective confining pressure and the initial distribution of the gas hydrate. Most of the shear band surfaces are not straight, and the widths of the shear bands are almost non-uniformly distributed.

The proppant transportation is a typical two-phase flow process in a complex cross fracture network during hydraulic fracturing. In this paper, the proppant transportation in cross fractures is investigated by the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. The Euler–Euler two-phase flow model and the kinetic theory of granular flow (KTGF) are adopted. The dimensionless controlling parameters are derived by dimensional analysis. The equilibrium proppant height (EPH) and the ratio of the proppant mass (RPM) in the secondary fracture to that in the whole cross fracture network are used to describe the movement and settlement of proppants in the cross fractures. The main features of the proppant transportation in the cross fractures are given, and several relative suggestions are presented for engineering application in the field. The main controlling dimensionless parameters for relative EPH are the proppant Reynolds number and the inlet proppant volume fraction. The dominating dimensionless parameters for RPM are the relative width of the primary and the secondary fracture. Transportation of the proppants with a certain particle size grading into the cross fractures may be a good way for supporting the hydraulic fractures.

Reservoir quality and productivity of fractured gas reservoirs depend heavily on the degree of fracture development. The fracture evaluation of such reservoir media is the key to quantify reservoir characterization for the purposes such as well drilling and completion as well as development and simulation of fractured gas reservoirs. In this study, a pore-fracture network model was constructed to understand the effects of fracture on permeability in the reservoir media. The microstructure parameters of fractures including fracture length, fracture density, fracture number, and fracture radius were analyzed. Then two modes and effects of matrix and fracture network control were discussed. The results indicate that the network permeability in the fractured reservoir media will increase linearly with fracture length, fracture density, fracture number, and fracture radius. When the fracture radius exceeds 80 µm, the fracture radius has a little effect on network permeability. Within the fracture density less than 0.55, it belongs to the matrix control mode, while the fracture network control mode is dominant in the fracture density exceeding 0.55. The network permeability in the matrix and fracture network control modes is affected by fracture density and the ratio of fracture radius to pore radius. There is a great change in the critical density for the matrix network control compared with the fracture network control. This work can provide a better understanding of the relationship between matrix and fractures, and the effects of fracture on permeability so as to evaluate the fluid flow in the fractured reservoir media.

As is well known, the external disturbance (especially the stochastic wind load) has nonnegligible effect on the operation of pantograph-catenary system, which may cause the strong fluctuation in contact force as well as the increased occurrence of contact loss. In order to improve the current collection quality of a high-speed railway pantograph-catenary system under a strong stochastic wind field, a sliding mode controller with a proportional-derivative (PD) sliding surface for a high-speed active pantograph is proposed. The nonlinear finite element procedure is employed to establish the catenary model. The fluctuating wind speeds along catenary are simulated using empirical spectrums. The buffeting forces exerted on contact and messenger wires are derived to construct the stochastic wind field along the catenary. A PD sliding surface is properly determined to guarantee that the mechanical impedance of pantograph head at the dominant frequencies of contact force decreases when the sliding surface approaches zero. Through several numerical simulations with different wind velocities and wind angles, the control performance of two popular control laws (proportional switching law and constant switching law) is evaluated.

Taking the conglomerate from Xinjiang Oilfield as study object, the porosity distribution characteristics of the conglomerate were analyzed with CT scanning; through the online monitoring of the water and polymer flooding process in a conglomerate core using an CT scanning system, the saturation profile along the core and the CT reconstructed images of core section during the displacing process were obtained; oil displacement mechanism was analyzed according to a new characterization parameter, “oil saturation frequency distribution”. The results show that the conglomerate has strong heterogeneity, resulting in “dominant channels”, and in turn ineffective water circulation and low water flooding oil recovery, moreover, the oil in high oil saturation area is produced first. In polymer flooding, the oil in high and medium oil saturation areas can be produced but the oil in low oil saturation areas still cannot be produced. Oil produced in the subsequent water flooding is still mainly from the high oil saturation areas. For conglomerate reservoirs, previous water flooding should reach as high water cut as possible so as to strengthen the slug effect of the polymer. Meanwhile the injection volume of polymer should be reduced, and a subsequent water flooding should be used to push the polymer slug to produce oil. Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the most prevalent mental disorders. In the brain, the hubs of the brain network play a key role in integrating and transferring information between different functional modules. However, whether the changed pattern in functional network hubs contributes to the onset of MDD remains unclear. Using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and graph theory methods, we investigated whether alterations of hubs can be detected in MDD. First, we constructed the whole-brain voxel-wise functional networks and calculated a functional connectivity strength (FCS) map in each subject in 34 MDD patients and 34 gender-, age-, and education level-matched healthy controls (HC). Next, the two-sample t-test was applied to compare the FCS maps between HC and MDD patients and identified significant decreased FCS in subgenual anterior cingulate cortex (sgACC) in MDD patients. Subsequent functional connectivity analyses of sgACC showed disruptions in functional connectivity with posterior insula, middle and inferior temporal gyrus, lingual gyrus, and cerebellum in MDD patients. Furthermore, the changed FCS of sgACC and functional connections to sgACC were significantly correlated with the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) scores in MDD patients. The results of the present study revealed the abnormal hub of sgACC and its corresponding disrupted frontal-limbic-visual cognitive-cerebellum functional networks in MDD. These findings may provide a new insight for the diagnosis and treatment of MDD.

Dissociation processes of gas hydrate-bearing sediment particles in water flow condition were investigated. Experiments were carried out by observing a spherical CO2 hydrate-bearing sediment (CHBS) particle settling in water. The release process of gas bubbles from CHBS particles was recorded by a high-speed camera and the total time of dissociation was obtained for different particle diameters and water temperatures. An intrinsic dissociation model was presented based on the assumption that the dissociation rate of the CHBS particle is exponential with the concentration of remaining hydrate. The model considered the influences of changing temperature, pressure and the particle concentration on the dissociation rate. The constants in the model were obtained based on fitting the experimental data. The presented model can reveal the dissociation behavior of the CHBS particle.

Microscopic flow in fractured porous media is a typical problem for the exploitation of tight reservoirs. The rapid-flow in the fractured porous-media is of great significance to efficient and continuous oil/gas exploitation. The fractures are expected to enhance flow conductivity and mass transfer between matrix and fractures, and to improve oil displacement during water flooding. However, the fractures may also lead to water channeling under some conditions. The understanding on the mechanism of the microscopic flow in the fractured porous media has been insufficient until now. In this paper, a two-dimensional pore-fracture network model is presented to study the role of fractures in the flow. The effects of two main dimensionless parameters, fracture length to network length lf/l and fracture density Nf/N, on the absolute permeability and the oil displacement efficiency are investigated. The results show that the flow in the matrix plays a controlling role at a low fracture density. Once the fracture density exceeds a certain value, the flow is controlled by fractures. With the increase of the fracture density, the oil displacement efficiency develops into three typical stages: when Nf/N < 0.1, the oil displacement efficiency increases rapidly; when 0.1 < Nf/N < 0.5, the oil displacement efficiency changes slowly; and when Nf/N > 0.5, the oil displacement efficiency decreases rapidly. In the case lf/l > 0.8, the water mainly flows through a concentrated path connected by some fractures, resulting in it bypassing most oil regions, and thus the oil displacement efficiency decreases rapidly, similar to the water channeling.

NAC (NAM, ATAF1/2, CUC2) transcription factors are involved in regulating plant developmental processes and response to environmental stresses. Brachypodium distachyon is an emerging model system for cereals, temperate grasses and biofuel crops. In this study, a comprehensive investigation of the molecular characterizations, phylogenetics and expression profiles under various abiotic stresses of the NAC gene family in Brachypodium distachyon was performed. In total, 118 BNAC genes in B. distachyon were identified, of which 22 (18.64%) were tandemly duplicated and segmentally duplicated, respectively. The Bayesian phylogenetic inference using Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms showed that they were divided into two clades and fourteen subfamilies, supported by similar motif compositions within one subfamily. Some critical amino acids detected using DIVERGE v3.0 might contribute to functional divergence among subfamilies. The different exon-intron organizations among subfamilies revealed structural differentiation. Promoter sequence predictions showed that the BNAC genes were involved in various developmental processes and diverse stress responses. Three NAC domain-encoding genes (BNAC012, BNAC078 and BNAC108), orthologous of NAC1, were targeted by five miRNA164 (Bdi-miR164a-c, e, f), suggesting that they might function in lateral organ enlargement, floral development and the responses to abiotic stress. Eleven (~9.32%) BNAC proteins containing α-helical transmembrane motifs were identified. 23 representative BNAC genes were analyzed by quantitative real-time PCR, showing different expression patterns under various abiotic stresses, of which 18, 17 and 11 genes were up-regulated significantly under drought, H2O2 and salt stresses, respectively. Only four and two genes were up-regulated under cold and cadmium stresses, respectively. Dynamic transcriptional expression analysis revealed that six genes showed constitutive expression and period-specific expression. The current results provide novel insights into the structure and function of the plant NAC gene family.

A thymidine analog, 5-ethynyl-2′-deoxyuridine (EdU), has been reported as a rapid labeling tool for direct measurement of cells in S-phase. The alkynyl group of EdU is a biologically inert group that undergoes an extremely selective reaction with azido-functionalized groups via Cu(I)-catalyzed alkyneazide cycloaddition (CuAAC or “click”) reaction. Here we report the highly efficient reaction of the terminal alkynyl group of EdU with a pro-fluorogenic compound, 3-azido-7-hydroxycoumarin, to afford an intense fluorescent 1,2,3-triazole product, which occurs only after the CuAAC reaction. This new method eliminates concerns for residual fluorescence since the unreacted precursors are optically inactive. The procedure therefore does not require extensive wash steps to remove the unreacted fluorescent dyes in the sample, allowing for immediate quantification and visualization after the reaction. The advantage over currently available commercial products is its potential to streamline high-throughput applications and help minimize errors.

Abstract The flow of proppant-laden fluid (PLF) in the fracture is a typical problem of solid-liquid two phase flow, and the transportation and deposition of proppants are essential to determine the flow conductivity of hydraulic fracturing. The self-suspending proppant with a water soluble surface coating is a newly presented supporting material and has great potential for hydraulic fracturing. The purpose of this paper is to understand the physical process, and investigate the effect of the self-suspending proppant on particle placement and transportation in the fracture. Two experiments of the PLF flow were conducted in a fracture, using the common ceramic proppant and self-suspending proppant, respectively. The fracture was formed by two parallel plexiglass planes, and was 4000 mm in length, 10 mm in width and 600 mm in height. It was found that four different zones developed when proppants were injected into the fracture continuously, which were the proppant bank zone, tumbling zone, suspending zone, and free zone. Compared with the common proppant, the self-suspending proppant changes the particle distribution in the fracture, and increases the thickness of proppant suspending and bank zone. The motion behavior of self-suspending proppants in the fracture is described. The conclusion is that appropriate reduction in the proppant concentration and density is beneficial to the good distribution and transportation of proppants in the fracture, and the self-suspending proppant favors the effective supporting of fracture.

Thermal management of nanoscale quantum dots (QDs) in light-emitting devices is a long-lasting challenge. The existing heat transfer reinforcement solutions for QDs-polymer composite mainly rely on thermal-conductive fillers. However, this strategy failed to deliver the QDs’ heat generation across a long distance, and the accumulated heat still causes considerable temperature rise of QDs-polymer composite, which eventually menaces the performance and reliability of light-emitting devices. Inspired by the radially aligned fruit fibers in oranges, we proposed to eliminate this heat dissipation challenge by establishing long-range ordered heat transfer pathways within the QDs-polymer composite. Ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene fibers (UPEF) were radially aligned throughout the polymer matrix, thus facilitating massive efficient heat dissipation of the QDs. Under a UPEF filling fraction of 24.46 vol%, the in-plane thermal conductivity of QDs-radially aligned UPEF composite (QDs-RAPE) could reach 10.45 W m−1 K−1, which is the highest value of QDs-polymer composite reported so far. As a proof of concept, the QDs’ working temperature can be reduced by 342.5 °C when illuminated by a highly concentrated laser diode (LD) under driving current of 1000 mA, thus improving their optical performance. This work may pave a new way for next generation high-power QDs lighting applications.

Low carbon medium manganese steel with chromium and molybdenum addition (4MnCM), alongside a control group without these additions (4Mn), was developed. The quenching (860 °C) and tempering (620 °C) heat treatment process was applied to both steel groups. The influence of Cr and Mo on the microstructure evolution and mechanical properties was examined. The findings revealed that, the low−temperature impact energy values (KV2) of 4MnCM at −60 and −84 °C were enhanced by 104 and 107 J, in comparison to 4Mn. The yield and tensile strength saw an increase of 100 MPa. The higher low-temperature toughness of 4MnCM is attributed, on one hand, to the addition of Cr and Mo, which inhibiting deformation twinning through enhances the stacking fault energy (SFE) of reversed austenite. On the other hand, it is due to the absence of coarse ε−martensite (ε−m) along the crack propagation path. Additionally, the phase transformation of reversed austenite occurs at the crack nucleation stage during the impact process of both steels, which helps alleviate stress concentration and increases the energy required for crack formation. The primary reason for the higher strength of 4MnCM lies in the significant enhancement of precipitation strengthening effects through the precipitation of M6C, M23C6 and Nb/TiC co-precipitation with M6C.
