A novel superhard structure of TiB3 is predicted and its phase transitions, mechanical properties and electronic structure up to 200 GPa are studied employing first-principles calculation. We propose a new structure by substituting the highly stable Amm2 structure with excellent mechanical properties in VB3. Enthalpy calculations demonstrate its superior energetic stability compared to the previously predicted C2/m structure via particle swarm optimization. Furthermore, it maintains stability up to 93.8 GPa and transforms into a P2/m structure under further compression. The Amm2 structure stands as a novel superhard phase with a hardness of 51.6 GPa by Chen’s model, surpassing the C2/m structure by 3.2 GPa. This disparity arises from structural distinctions, with the Amm2 structure featuring boron plates consisting of more layers, resulting in stronger B-B interactions. This novel superhard structure stands as the hardest reported Ti-B compound to date, poised to replace conventional superhard material c-BN in cutting tools and wear-resistant coatings.

Abstract Background Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) is a promising biomarker for predicting relapse in multiple solid cancers. However, the predictive value of ctDNA for disease recurrence remains indefinite in locoregional gastric cancer (GC). Here, we aimed to evaluate the predictive value of ctDNA in this context. Methods From 2016 to 2019, 100 patients with stage II/III resectable GC were recruited in this prospective cohort study (NCT02887612). Primary tumors were collected during surgical resection, and plasma samples were collected perioperatively and within 3 months after adjuvant chemotherapy (ACT). Somatic variants were captured via a targeted sequencing panel of 425 cancer‐related genes. The plasma was defined as ctDNA‐positive only if one or more variants detected in the plasma were presented in at least 2% of the primary tumors. Results Compared with ctDNA‐negative patients, patients with positive postoperative ctDNA had moderately higher risk of recurrence [hazard ratio (HR) = 2.74, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.37–5.48; P = 0.003], while patients with positive post‐ACT ctDNA showed remarkably higher risk (HR = 14.99, 95% CI = 3.08‐72.96; P < 0.001). Multivariate analyses indicated that both postoperative and post‐ACT ctDNA positivity were independent predictors of recurrence‐free survival (RFS). Moreover, post‐ACT ctDNA achieved better predictive performance (sensitivity, 77.8%; specificity, 90.6%) than both postoperative ctDNA and serial cancer antigen. A comprehensive model incorporating ctDNA for recurrence risk prediction showed a higher C‐index (0.78; 95% CI = 0.71–0.84) than the model without ctDNA (0.71; 95% CI = 0.64–0.79; P = 0.009). Conclusions Residual ctDNA after ACT effectively predicts high recurrence risk in stage II/III GC, and the combination of tissue‐based and circulating tumor features could achieve better risk prediction.

To compare the differences in floral composition and functions between the two types of microbiota, ileal contents and feces were collected from Sprague Dawley (SD) rats fed in a conventional or specific-pathogen free (SPF) environment and rats fed a high-fat diet (HFD), and the V3–V4 region of the 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) gene in these rats was then amplified and sequenced. Compared with feces, about 60% of the bacterial genera in the ileum were exclusive, with low abundance (operational taxonomic units (OTUs) < 1000). Of bacteria shared between the ileum and feces, a few genera were highly abundant (dominant), whereas most had low abundance (less dominant). The dominant bacteria differed between the ileum and feces. Ileal bacteria showed greater β-diversity, and the distance between in-group samples was nearer than that between paired ileum–feces samples. Moreover, the ileum shared various biomarkers and functions with feces (p < 0.05). The HFD and SPF conditions had a profound influence on α-diversity and abundance but not on the exclusive/shared features or β-diversity of samples. The present findings suggested that, under conventional circumstances, fecal bacteria can represent approximately 40% of the low abundant ileal bacterial genera and that dominant fecal bacteria failed to represent the ileal dominant flora. Moreover, fecal flora diversity does not reflect β-diversity in the ileum.

Abstract Orthorhombic Ca2CO4 is a recently discovered orthocarbonate whose high-pressure physical properties are critical for understanding the deep carbon cycle. Here, we study the structure, elastic and seismic properties of Ca2CO4-Pnma at 20–140 GPa using first-principles calculations, and compare them with the results of CaCO3 polymorphs. The results show that the structural parameters of Ca2CO4-Pnma are in good agreement with the experimental results. It could be the potential host of carbon in the Earth's mantle subduction slab, and its low wave velocity and small anisotropy may be the reason why it cannot be detected in seismic observation. The thermodynamic properties of Ca2CO4-Pnma at high temperature and high pressure are obtained using the quasi-harmonic approximation method. This study is helpful in understanding the behavior of Ca-carbonate in the Earth’s lower mantle conditions.

Abstract A two-dimensional phononic crystal sensor model with high-quality factor and excellent sensitivity for sensing acetone solutions and operating at 25–45 kHz is proposed. The model for filling solution cavities is based on reference designs of quasi-crystal and gradient cavity structures. The transmission spectrum of sensor is simulated by the finite element method. High-quality factor of 45,793.06 and sensitivity of 80,166.67 Hz are obtained for the acetone concentration with 1–9.1%, and quality factor of 61,438.09 and sensitivity of 24,400.00 Hz are obtained for the acetone concentration range of 10–100%, which indicated the sensor could still achieve high sensitivity and quality factor at operating frequencies from 25 to 45 kHz. To verify the application of the sensor to sensing other solutions, the sensitivity for sound velocity and density is calculated as 24.61 m-1 and 0.7764 m3/(kg × s), respectively. It indicates the sensor is sensitive to acoustic impedance changes of the solution and equally suitable for sensing other solutions. The simulation results reveal the phononic crystal sensor possessed high-performance in composition capture in pharmaceutical production and petrochemical industry, which can provide theoretical reference for the design of new biochemical sensors for reliable detection of solution concentration.

Abstract The physical properties of Mg-carbonate at high temperature and pressure are crucial for understanding the deep carbon cycle. Here, we use first-principles calculations to study the physical properties of MgCO3-C2/m and Mg2CO4-P21/c under high pressure. The research shows that the structure and equation of state of MgCO3-C2/m are in good agreement with the experimental results, and the phase transition pressure of Mg2CO4 from pnma to P21/c structure is 44.66 GPa. By comparing the elastic properties, seismic properties and anisotropy of MgCO3-C2/m and Mg2CO4-P21/c, it is found that the elastic modulus and sound velocity of Mg2CO4-P21/c are smaller than those of MgCO3-C2/m, while the anisotropy is larger than that of MgCO3-C2/m. These results indicate that Mg2CO4-P21/c exists in the deep mantle and may be the main reason why carbonate cannot be detected. The minimum thermal conductivity of MgCO3-C2/m and Mg2CO4-P21/c is the largest in the [010] direction and the smallest in the [001] direction. The thermodynamic properties of MgCO3-C2/m and Mg2CO4-P21/c are predicted using the quasi-harmonic approximation (QHA) method.

Abstract The first-principles calculations based on density functional theory with projector-augmented wave are used to study the anisotropy of elastic modulus, mechanical hardness, minimum thermal conductivity, acoustic velocity and thermal expansion of magnesite (MgCO3) under deep mantle pressure. The calculation results of the phase transition pressure, equation of state, elastic constants, elastic moduli, elastic wave velocities and thermal expansion coefficient are consistent with those determined experimentally. The research results show that the elastic moduli have strong anisotropy, the mechanical hardness gradually softens with increasing pressure, the conduction velocity of heat in the [100] direction is faster than that in the [001] direction, the plane wave velocity anisotropy first increases and then gradually decreases with increasing pressure, and the shear wave velocity anisotropy increases with the increase of pressure, the thermal expansion in the [100] direction is greater than that in the [001] direction. The research results are of great significance to people’s understanding of the high-pressure physical properties of carbonates in the deep mantle.

Abstract In view of the influence of variability of low-frequency noise frequency on noise prevention in real life, we present a novel two-dimensional tunable phononic crystal plate which is consisted of lead columns deposited in a silicone rubber plate with periodic holes and calculate its bandgap characteristics by finite element method. The low-frequency bandgap mechanism of the designed model is discussed simultaneously. Accordingly, the influence of geometric parameters of the phononic crystal plate on the bandgap characteristics is analyzed and the bandgap adjustability under prestretch strain is further studied. Results show that the new designed phononic crystal plate has lower bandgap starting frequency and wider bandwidth than the traditional single-sided structure, which is due to the coupling between the resonance mode of the scatterer and the long traveling wave in the matrix with the introduction of periodic holes. Applying prestretch strain to the matrix can realize active realtime control of low-frequency bandgap under slight deformation and broaden the low-frequency bandgap, which can be explained as the multiple bands tend to be flattened due to the localization degree of unit cell vibration increases with the rise of prestrain. The presented structure improves the realtime adjustability of sound isolation and vibration reduction frequency for phononic crystal in complex acoustic vibration environments.

Abstract. Background:. Minimal change nephropathy (MCD) is a common pathological type of nephrotic syndrome and is often associated with acute kidney injury (AKI). This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics and related factors of AKI in patients with MCD and nephrotic syndrome. Methods:. Patients from Chinese People's Liberation Army General Hospital who were diagnosed with pathological renal MCD with clinical manifestations of nephrotic syndrome were included from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2017. Patients diagnosed with membranous nephropathy (MN) by renal biopsy from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2017 are included as a control population. We retrospectively analyzed the clinical and pathological characteristics of patients as well as the percentages and clinical characteristics of AKI in different age groups. We assessed the correlation of pathological characteristics with serum creatinine using multivariate linear regression analysis. Results:. A total of 367 patients with MCD were included in the analysis, with a sex ratio of 1.46: 1 (male: female) and an age range of 6 to 77 years. Among all the patients, 109 developed AKI (29.7%), and of these patients, 85 were male (78.0%). In the 586 patients with MN, 27 (4.6%) patients developed AKI. Acupuncture is widely used in the treatment of cerebral hemorrhage, and it improves outcomes in experimental animal models and patients. However, the mechanisms underlying the effectiveness of acupuncture treatment for cerebral hemorrhage are still unclear. In this study, a model of intracerebral hemorrhage was produced by injecting 50 μL autologous blood into the caudate nucleus in Wistar rats. Acupuncture at Baihui (DU20) and Qubin (GB7) acupoints was performed at a depth of 1.0 inch, 12 hours after blood injection, once every 24 hours. The needle was rotated at 200 r/min for 5 minutes, For each 30-minute session, needling at 200 r/min was performed for three sessions, each lasting 5 minutes. For the positive control group, at 6 hours, and 1, 2, 3 and 7 days after induction of hemorrhage, the rats were intraperitoneally injected with 1 mL aniracetam (0.75 mg/mL), three times a day. The Bederson behavioral test was used to assess palsy in the contralateral limbs. Western blot assay was used to examine the expression levels of Nestin and basic fibroblast growth factor in the basal ganglia. Immunohistochemistry was performed to count the number of Nestin- and glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor-positive cells in the basal ganglia. Acupuncture effectively reduced hemorrhage and brain edema, elevated the expression levels of Nestin and basic fibroblast growth factor in the basal ganglia, and increased the number of Nestin- and glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor-positive cells in the basal ganglia. Together, these findings suggest that acupuncture promotes functional recovery after cerebral hemorrhage by increasing the expression of neurotrophic factors. The performance of asphalt mixtures containing reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) are strongly influenced by the degree of blending between RAP and virgin bitumen. In the aim of revealing the blending interface, the present work reports an experimental investigation on the blending degree between modified bitumen and RAP (or aged bitumen). A montmorillonite-rhodamine composite modifier was prepared as a tracer, which has exclusive element and fluorescence. Using microscopic test technique, the blending process of and the crack process of RAP bitumen was observed, and the blending image of new reclaimed asphalt mixture was obtained. The interface was investigated through image processing and machine learning. Based on the results, the montmorillonite modifier slightly affected on the softening point and penetration of virgin bitumen after addition. The blending interface was engagement like gears. The optimal heating temperature range is 110 °C to 115 °C for forming a better adhesive interface between RAP and modified bitumen. Moreover, the interface transition zone thickness between RAP and modified bitumen was measured to be 4 to 8 μ m.

Baihui (DU20)-penetrating-Qubin (GB7) acupuncture can inhibit inflammatory reactions and activate signaling pathways related to proliferation after intracerebral hemorrhage. However, there is no research showing the relationship between this treatment and cell apoptosis. Rat models of intracerebral hemorrhage were established by injecting 60 μL of autologous blood into the right side of the caudate-putamen. Six hours later, the needle traveled subcutaneously from the Baihui acupoint to Qubin acupoint. The needle was alternately rotated (180 ± 10 turns/min) manually along clockwise and counter-clockwise directions. Stimulation lasted for 7 days, and was performed three times each for 6 minutes with 6-minute intervals between stimulations. Rats intraperitoneally receiving Sonic hedgehog pathway activator, purmorphamine (1 mg/kg per day), served as positive controls. Motor and sensory function were assessed using the Ludmila Belayev test. Extent of pathological changes were measured in the perihemorrhagic penumbra using hematoxylin-eosin staining. Apoptosis was examined by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT)-mediated dUTP nick end labeling assay. Expression of smoothened (Smo) and glioma-associated homolog 1 (Gli1) was determined by western blot assay. Our results showed that Baihui-penetrating-Qubin acupuncture promoted recovery of motor and sensory function, reduced the apoptotic cell percentage in the perihemorrhagic penumbra, and up-regulated Smo and Gli1 expression. We conclude that Baihui-penetrating-Qubin acupuncture can mitigate hemorrhage and promote functional recovery of the brain in a rat model of intracerebral hemorrhage, possibly by activating the Sonic hedgehog pathway.

Abstract Background The current study sought to perform a meta-analysis to compare the preoperative staging of endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) and multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) in gastric carcinoma. Methods Articles published between January 1, 2000, and April 1, 2016, that compared EUS with MDCT were included, and data were presented as 2 × 2 tables. The sensitivities, specificities and summary receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves for T and N staging were calculated using a bivariate mixed effects model. Data were weighted by generic variance and then pooled by random-effects modeling. Results Eight studies comprising 1736 patients were included in this meta-analysis. For T1 staging, the sensitivity value for EUS (82%) was significantly higher than that for MDCT (41%) (relative risk (RR): 2.06, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.07–3.94; P = 0.030). For lymph node involvement, the sensitivity value for EUS (91%) was also significantly higher than that for MDCT (77%) (RR 1.14, 95% CI 1.05–1.23; P = 0.001). However, the specificity values of both EUS and MDCT were quite low, at 49 and 63%, respectively. No significant differences in T2–4 staging between EUS and MDCT were noted. Conclusion This meta-analysis indicates that EUS may be superior to MDCT in preoperative T1 and N staging. Additionally, the low specificity values of EUS and MDCT for N staging merits attention.

Objective To study the epidemiological characteristics of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) in Tongzhou District, Beijing between 2013 and 2017. Methods Data on HFMD infections from 1 January 2013 to 31 December 2017 were collected from the Notifiable Infectious Diseases Reporting Information System and analysed. Serotyping of enteroviruses from samples from patients with HFMD was undertaken using reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction. Results A total of 15 341 patients with HFMD were reported and 32 patients (0.2%) were classified as having severe HFMD. The annual mean incidence rate of HFMD was 219.3/100 000 of the general population. The incidence and case-severity rates of HFMD generally decreased between 2013 and 2017. In the floating migrant population, the incidence and cases-severity rates of HFMD were significantly higher than in the local population. The peak incidence and severity-case rates were at 2 years of age and > 90% of patients were ≤5 years. Enterovirus A71 and Coxsackievirus A16 were the predominant pathogens in 2013–2017. Conclusions During the 5-year period 2013–2017, the incidence rate and case-severity rate of HFMD generally decreased in Tongzhou District, Beijing. The floating migrant population and children ≤5 years of age were at the highest risk of HFMD.

A 76-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital four times from November 2007 to June 2009. In this complex case, the patient had silicosis complicated by broncholithiasis, oesophagobronchial fistulas, and relapsed tuberculosis. She had worked as a stone crusher for 3 years and was exposed to a large amount of quartz dust. Barium oesophagography, gastroesophageal endoscopy, and biopsy suggested oesophageal-related chronic inflammation and ulceration, which may have caused the repeated oesophagobronchial fistulas. Bronchoscopy revealed a free broncholithiasis in the left mainstem bronchus. The patient was admitted a fourth time because of silicotuberculosis relapse. After 9 months of antituberculosis treatment, the patient recovered and was still clinically well at the time of this writing.

Notch pathway activation maintains neural stem cells in a proliferating state and increases nerve repair capacity. To date, studies have rarely focused on changes or damage to signal transduction pathways during cerebral hemorrhage. Here, we examined the effect of acupuncture in a rat model of cerebral hemorrhage. We examined four groups: in the control group, rats received no treatment. In the model group, cerebral hemorrhage models were established by infusing non-heparinized blood into the brain. In the acupuncture group, modeled rats had Baihui (DU20) and Qubin (GB7) acupoints treated once a day for 30 minutes. In the DAPT group, modeled rats had 0.15 μg/mL DAPT solution (10 mL) infused into the brain. Immunohistochemistry and western blot results showed that acupuncture effectively inhibits Notch1 and Hes1 protein expression in rat basal ganglia. These inhibitory effects were identical to DAPT, a Notch signaling pathway inhibitor. Our results suggest that acupuncture has a neuroprotective effect on cerebral hemorrhage by inhibiting Notch-Hes signaling pathway transduction in rat basal ganglia after cerebral hemorrhage.

A novel, multilayer fractal PBG is presented here as the substrate for a microstrip line and the resulting configuration builds a low-pass filter of wide stopband. Experimental results in comparison with the corresponding two filters with monolayer PBG show that the proposed filter drastically enhances the width of the stopband.

BACKGROUND: This study compared the performance of endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) and multislice spiral computed tomography (MSCT) in the preoperative staging of gastric cancer. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A total of 610 patients participated in this study, all of whom had undergone surgical resection, had confirmed gastric cancer and were evaluated with EUS and MSCT. Tumor staging was evaluated using the Tumor-Node-Metastasis (TNM) staging and Japanese classification. The results from the imaging modalities were compared with the postoperative histopathological outcomes. The overall accuracies of EUS and MSCT for the T staging category were 76.7% and 78.2% (P=0.537), respectively. AIM: To investigate whether the recommendation to remove 15 lymph nodes that is used in the staging system is necessary to assess gastric cancer progression and to evaluate whether our metastatic lymph node ratio dividing method, adapted from the AJCC's (American Joint Committee on Cancer) 7(th) TNM staging system, is helpful for the patients with fewer than 15 harvested lymph nodes. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of 1101 patients with histologically diagnosed gastric cancer who underwent a D2 gastrectomy at the Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center between January 2001 and December 2010. The Kappa and Chi-squared tests were employed to compare the clinicopathological variables. The Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression were employed for the univariate and multivariate survival analyses. RESULTS: In the trial, 346, 601 and 154 patients had 0-14, 15-30 and more than 30 lymph nodes harvested, respectively. The median survival times of patients with different lymph nodes harvested in N0, N1, N2 and N3a groups were 45.43, 54.28 and 66.95 months (p=0.068); 49.22, 44.25 and 56.72 months (p
