Abstract Seawater electrolysis using renewable electricity offers an attractive route to sustainable hydrogen production, but the sluggish electrode kinetics and poor durability are two major challenges. We report a molybdenum nitride (Mo2N) catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction with activity comparable to commercial platinum on carbon (Pt/C) catalyst in natural seawater. The catalyst operates more than 1000 hours of continuous testing at 100 mA cm−2 without degradation, whereas massive precipitate (mainly magnesium hydroxide) forms on the Pt/C counterpart after 36 hours of operation at 10 mA cm−2. Our investigation reveals that ammonium groups generate in situ at the catalyst surface, which not only improve the connectivity of hydrogen-bond networks but also suppress the local pH increase, enabling the enhanced performances. Moreover, a zero-gap membrane flow electrolyser assembled by this catalyst exhibits a current density of 1 A cm−2 at 1.87 V and 60 oC in simulated seawater and runs steadily over 900 hours.

Abstract Simultaneously improving the activity and stability of catalysts for anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) remains a notable challenge. Here, we report a chromium-doped ruthenium dioxide with oxygen vacancies, termed Cr0.2Ru0.8O2-x, that drives OER with an overpotential of 170 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and operates stably over 2000 h in acidic media. Experimental and theoretical studies show that the synergy of Cr dopant and oxygen vacancy induces an unconventional dopant-mediated hydroxyl spillover mechanism. Such dynamic hydroxyl spillover from Cr dopant to Ru active site changes the rate-determining step from OOH* formation to O2 formation and thus greatly improves the OER performance. Moreover, the Cr dopant and oxygen vacancy also play a crucial role in stabilizing surface Ru and lattice oxygen in the Ru-O-Cr structural motif. When assembled into the anode of a practical PEMWE device, Cr0.2Ru0.8O2-x enables long-term durability of over 200 h at an ampere-level current density and 60 degrees centigrade.

Abstract Objective The objective of this study was to explore the clinical characteristics and management of sudden hearing loss (HL) during pregnancy, thus better guiding the clinical practice. Methods The clinical and follow‐up data of 17 patients (17 ears) with sudden HL during pregnancy were analyzed retrospectively (the observe group). Twelve nonpregnant female patients (12 ears) with sudden HL of similar clinical characteristics were selected as the control group. The prognosis of the two groups was compared. All the patients were followed up after delivery, and two of them were readmitted to the hospital 1–2 months after delivery. Results The observe group had better improvement in hearing and a higher response rate compared to the control group. The pure tone hearing and speech recognition rate of patients could still be improved after the readmitted treatment, and the hearing could partially recover spontaneously during follow‐up. The laboratory indicators that affect the inflammatory response and coagulation pathway were significantly different between the two groups. Conclusions The hearing condition of sudden HL during pregnancy is severe, and the prognosis of these patients is better than nonpregnant patients of similar clinical characteristics. Postpartum treatment is still effective, and some patients showed self‐healing with time during follow‐up. The inflammatory response and coagulation function may affect the hearing of patients through a metabolic pathway.

Understanding the spatiotemporal changes in ecosystem service value (ESV) under urbanization, as well as the supply–demand relationship between different regions, can provide a consultation for ecological compensation (EC) standards. Taking Suzhou, a typical city experiencing rapid urbanization in the Yangtze River Delta, as a case study, this paper analyzes the spatiotemporal changes in land use and ESV from 2000 to 2020. To quantify the ecosystem service flow (ESF), we apply the breakpoint formula and field strength model. Additionally, an EC standard is established, taking population, area and GDP into account while specifying compensation. The findings reveal that urbanization has led to a substantial increase in built-up land in Suzhou, accompanied by continuous reductions in farmland and water bodies. As a result, ESV decreased from 153.07 billion CNY to 138.81 billion CNY. Furthermore, the research identifies a spatial pattern where ESV increases with distance from the city center but decreases with distance from the lake center. This pattern suggests a directional flow of ESV from lakes to cities. Notably, ESF mainly occurs in the southwestern and central areas of Suzhou, with areas closer to Taihu Lake experiencing greater ESV transfer. The transfer value ranges from 5.11 and 32.57 billion CNY. There is an imbalance between the supply and demand of ecosystem services. Therefore, specific county-level cities in Suzhou, namely, the Kunshan District and Industrial Park, emerge as contributors of EC and should contribute 71.94 and 80.74 billion CNY, respectively, to other cities. By formulating a novel EC policy for Suzhou, this paper provides a scientifically informed reference for promoting sustainable development.

Abstract Background Tactile and mechanical pain are crucial to our interaction with the environment, yet the underpinning molecular mechanism is still elusive. Endophilin A2 (EndoA2) is an evolutionarily conserved protein that is documented in the endocytosis pathway. However, the role of EndoA2 in the regulation of mechanical sensitivity and its underlying mechanisms are currently unclear. Methods Male and female C57BL/6 mice (8–12 weeks) and male cynomolgus monkeys (7–10 years old) were used in our experiments. Nerve injury-, inflammatory-, and chemotherapy-induced pathological pain models were established for this study. Behavioral tests of touch, mechanical pain, heat pain, and cold pain were performed in mice and nonhuman primates. Western blotting, immunostaining, co-immunoprecipitation, proximity ligation and patch-clamp recordings were performed to gain insight into the mechanisms. Results The results showed that EndoA2 was primarily distributed in neurofilament-200-positive (NF200+) medium-to-large diameter dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons of mice and humans. Loss of EndoA2 in mouse NF200+ DRG neurons selectively impaired the tactile and mechanical allodynia. Furthermore, EndoA2 interacted with the mechanically sensitive ion channel Piezo2 and promoted the membrane trafficking of Piezo2 in DRG neurons. Moreover, as an adaptor protein, EndoA2 also bound to kinesin family member 5B (KIF5B), which was involved in the EndoA2-mediated membrane trafficking process of Piezo2. Loss of EndoA2 in mouse DRG neurons damaged Piezo2-mediated rapidly adapting mechanically activated currents, and re-expression of EndoA2 rescued the MA currents. In addition, interference with EndoA2 also suppressed touch sensitivity and mechanical hypersensitivity in nonhuman primates. Conclusions Our data reveal that the KIF5B/EndoA2/Piezo2 complex is essential for Piezo2 trafficking and for sustaining transmission of touch and mechanical hypersensitivity signals. EndoA2 regulates touch and mechanical allodynia via kinesin-mediated Piezo2 trafficking in sensory neurons. Our findings identify a potential new target for the treatment of mechanical pain.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is independently associated with a poor prognosis in patients with sepsis. Macrophage M1 polarization plays an instrumental role in this process. Therefore, the exploration of key molecules affecting acute lung injury and macrophage M1 polarization may provide therapeutic targets for the treatment of septic ARDS. Here, we identified that elevated levels of Ankyrin repeat domain-containing protein 22 (ANKRD22) were associated with poor prognosis and more pronounced M1 macrophage polarization in septic patients by analyzing high-throughput data. ANKRD22 expression was also significantly upregulated in the alveolar lavage fluid, peripheral blood, and lung tissue of septic ARDS model mice. Knockdown of ANKRD22 significantly attenuated acute lung injury in mice with sepsis-induced ARDS and reduced the M1 polarization of lung macrophages. Furthermore, deletion of ANKRD22 in macrophages inhibited M1 macrophage polarization and reduced levels of phosphorylated IRF3 and intracellular interferon regulatory factor 3 (IRF3) expression, while re-expression of ANKRD22 reversed these changes. Further experiments revealed that ANKRD22 promotes IRF3 activation by binding to mitochondrial antiviral-signaling protein (MAVS). In conclusion, these findings suggest that ANKRD22 promotes the M1 polarization of lung macrophages and exacerbates sepsis-induced ARDS.

The Charpy impact toughness is a crucial mechanical parameter in the application of materials within the realm of engineering. This study represents the pioneering investigation into the influence of different building directions on the Charpy impact toughness of NiTi shape memory alloys (SMAs) produced via laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). Texture analysis reveals that C0 and C90 exhibit a pronounced // building direction (BA), while C45 demonstrates a strong texture along and . The impact test results demonstrate that C0 exhibits superior impact toughness with an absorbed energy of 12.87 J. The fractured surfaces are examined using the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Among them, the electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) results indicate that the samples with higher geometrically necessary dislocation (GND) and kernel average misorientation (KAM) values can effectively reflect superior impact toughness. In contrast, fewer high-angle grain boundaries (HAGBs) are preferable. Due to the adiabatic effect, the phase transformation of the samples from austenite to martensite doesn't appear under the impact loading. Additionally, this paper discusses the impact of texture orientation, defects, and the relationship between loading direction and deposited layers on the impact toughness of the samples. These findings on impact properties would provide valuable guidance for engineering applications of NiTi SMAs.

The construction of super-large tunnels generates various safety risks that can hamper the tunneling process and cause severe damages if not properly identified. This paper presents a case study on the identification and management of geological and environmental risks during the construction of the largest (a diameter of 15.8 m) slurry shield tunnel in China. Its ground conditions and settlement control were identified among the most challenging owing to a large area of mixed ground conditions, 11 fault zones and tunneling under residential areas and the city’s Metro Lines 1 and 9. In response to the severity of these risks and challenges, novel monitoring systems, ground treatment, and safety management technologies were successfully implemented throughout the tunneling process. Further, a technical framework was proposed in this study to serve as a risk management guidance for analogous tunneling operations.

Abstract Finding highly efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts is pertinent to the ultimate goal of transformation into a net-zero carbon emission society. The design principles for such HER catalysts lie in the well-known structure-property relationship, which guides the synthesis procedure that creates catalyst with target properties such as catalytic activity. Here we report a general strategy to synthesize 10 kinds of single-atom-doped CoSe2-DETA (DETA = diethylenetriamine) nanobelts. By systematically analyzing these products, we demonstrate a volcano-shape correlation between HER activity and Co atomic configuration (ratio of Co-N bonds to Co-Se bonds). Specifically, Pb-CoSe2-DETA catalyst reaches current density of 10 mA cm−2 at 74 mV in acidic electrolyte (0.5 M H2SO4, pH ~0.35). This striking catalytic performance can be attributed to its optimized Co atomic configuration induced by single-atom doping.

It is critical to understand the factors that are associated with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) progression, metastasis and response to therapy. Here, the authors analyse primary and metastatic NPC samples using bulk and single-cell sequencing, and find two distinct evolutionary routes that lead to metastasis.

We identified relapsing fever (RF) Borrelia in 1.45% (145/10426) of the ticks and 1.40% (40/2850) of the wild mammals in a field investigation in China. Three RF Borrelia species, including human-pathogenic Borrelia miyamotoi, Borrelia persica and unclassified Babesia sp. were determined. Main species determined from ticks was B. miyamotoi (44.14%), followed by the unclassified Borrelia sp. (42.76%), and Borrelia theileri (13.10%). In wild mammals, main species found was B. persica (57.50%), followed by the unclassified Borrelia sp. (40.00%), and B. miyamotoi (2.50%). We determined B. theileri and B. persica in China for the first time. The coexistence of RF Borrelia species in one tick species in a given region was observed, with the most frequent coexistence seen for B. miyamotoi and the unclassified Borrelia sp. in Dermacentor silvarum, Haemaphysalis japonica, Haemaphysalis longicornis, and Ixodes persulcatuss respectively. The wide distribution and high variety of RF Borrelia in China pose a potential threat to public health.

Cell-type-specific recording and manipulation is important for understanding neural circuits. Here the authors describe molecular tools to access cell types based on genetics and connectivity in the brain, and demonstrated the utility of these tools in neural recording and manipulations.

Karimabad virus (KARV) is an arthropod-borne viral agent originally found in the Mediterranean region that can cause human infection via sandfly as the main vector. The KARV virion has been only detected from sandfly in western Asian countries and specific antibody has been detected from Rhombomys opimus and human in countries in Africa, Western and Central Asia. In this study, by next-generation sequencing (NGS) on a high variety of wild small animals in Xinjiang Autonomous Region in China, we obtained a complete sequence of KARV from Rhombomys opimus. An expanded epidemiological investigation was subsequently performed on 1713 small wild mammals that were widely collected from seven bioclimatic distinct sites in China by applying KARV specific RT-PCR and sequencing. Positive results were only obtained from 8 (2.29%) of the Rhombomys opimus captured in Xinjiang Autonomous Region, while not in 57 rodent species that were captured in other six provinces. Sequence analysis revealed the currently identified KARV was clustered with Gabek Forest virus, and they shared 79.1–93.9% identity with Iranian KARV that differed for L, M and S segments. Phylogenetic analysis based on eight partial L gene sequences demonstrated the separation of two lineages of the current KARV sequences. The first report of KARV in Rhombomys opimus in China expanded the currently known geographic scope, reservoirs types and the genetic heterogeneity of KARV. Our results show a new host, Rhombomys opimus, for KARV and highlight potential zoonotic transmission of KARV in humans.

Developing durable catalysts for carbon dioxide reduction to formate at commercial-scale current densities is challenging. This work reports that indium sulfide stabilized through zinc incorporation can produce formate efficiently and quickly at high current densities over long timescales.

The lack of efficient and cost-effective catalysts for H2 oxidation reaction (HOR) hinders the application of anion exchange membrane fuel cells. Here, authors report a ternary nickel-tungsten-copper nanoalloy with marked HOR activity and stability that rivals the benchmark platinum catalyst.

Abstract Long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) Cancer Susceptibility 2 (CASC2) has been proved to contribute to the development of cancers. However, the mechanism behind the action of CASC2 in thyroid cancer is not quite clear. We demonstrated that CASC2 was downregulated in thyroid cancer. We noted that CASC2 overexpression restrained the growth, migration, and invasion of thyroid cancer cells, whereas CASC2 depletion caused opposite trends. Bioinformatics analysis predicted that hypoxia inducible factor 1 subunit alpha inhibitor (FIH‐1) was potentially targeted by miR‐18a‐5p, which was confirmed by luciferase reporter assay. Upregulation of FIH‐1 abrogated the promotive effect of miR‐18a‐5p on the growth and invasion of thyroid cancer cells. In addition, CASC2 serves as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) and a ''sponge'' for miR‐18a‐5p, thereby regulating the expression of FIH‐1. These data elucidated the CASC2/miR‐18a‐5p ceRNA network in thyroid cancer pathogenesis.

Mukawa virus (MKWV), a novel tick-borne virus (TBV) of the genus Phlebovirus of family Phenuiviridae, has been firstly reported in Ixodes persulcatus in Japan. In this study, we made an epidemiological investigation in China to obtain the geographic distribution and genetic features of this virus outside Japan. We screened 1,815 adult ticks (665 I. persulcatus, 336 Dermacentor silvarum, 599 Haemaphysalis longicornis, 170 Rhipicephalus microplus, 45 Haemaphysalis concinna) and 805 wild small mammals collected from eight provinces. The positive rate of 6.77% (45/665, including 18 female and 27 male I. persulcatus) and 2.22% (1/45, 1 male H. concinna) were obtained from I. persulcatus and H. concinna in Heilongjiang province, respectively. No evidence of MKWV infection was found in other three tick species or any of the mammalian species. The virus can infect the Vero cells successfully, indicating the ability of MKWV to replicate in mammalian cells. A phylogenetic tree based on the nucleotide sequences of L, M, and S segments demonstrated that the Japanese MKWV variant, our two MKWV variants, and KURV were clustered with the members of the mosquito/sandfly-borne phleboviruses and distant from other tick-borne phenuiviruses. A phylogenetic analysis based on 895 bp partial L gene sequences (n = 46) showed that all MKWV sequences were separated into three lineages. Our results showed the presence of MKWV in I. persulcatus and H. concinna in northeast of China, highlighting the necessity of epidemiological study in wider regions. Due to the ability of MKWV to replicate in mammalian cells, the potential for zoonosis, and wide distribution of I. persulcatus and H. concinna in China, the important vectors of MKWV, further screening to more tick species, wild animals, domestic animals, and humans raises up practical significance.

The lack of efficient and cost-effective catalysts for hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) hampers the application of hydroxide exchange membrane fuel cells. Here, authors reported bimetallic MoNi4 and WNi4 nanoalloys with marked HOR activity in alkali, among which MoNi4 outperforms the Pt/C catalyst.

Abstract Herein, a programmable dual‐catalyst hairpin assembly (DCHA) for realizing the synchronous recycle of two catalysts is developed, displaying high reaction rate and outstanding conversion efficiency beyond traditional nucleic acid signal amplifications (NASA). Once catalyst I interacts with the catalyst II, the DCHA can be triggered to realize the simultaneous recycle of catalysts I and II to keep the highly concentrated intermediate product duplex I‐II instead of the steadily decreased one in typical NASA, which can accomplish in about only 16 min and achieves the outstanding conversion efficiency up to 4.54 × 108, easily conquering the main predicaments of NASA: time‐consuming and low‐efficiency. As a proof of the concept, the proposed DCHA as a high‐speed and hyper‐efficiency DNA signal magnifier is successfully applied in the rapid and ultrasensitive detection of miRNA‐21 in cancer cell lysates, which exploits the new generation of universal strategy for the applications in biosensing assay, clinic diagnose, and DNA nanobiotechnology.

Noble-metal-free catalysts often show stability issues in acidic media due to structural degradation. Here authors show that phase-mixed engineering of cobalt diselenide electrocatalysts can enable greater covalency of Co-Se bonds and improve robustness for catalyzing hydrogen evolution in acid.

Summary: It is well known that nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB) regulates neuronal structures and functions by nuclear transcription. Here, we showed that phospho-p65 (p-p65), an active form of NF-κB subunit, reversibly interacted with Nav1.7 channels in the membrane of dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons of rats. The interaction increased Nav1.7 currents by slowing inactivation of Nav1.7 channels and facilitating their recovery from inactivation, which may increase the resting state of the channels ready for activation. In cultured DRG neurons TNF-α upregulated the membrane p-p65 and enhanced Nav1.7 currents within 5 min but did not affect nuclear NF-κB within 40 min. This non-transcriptional effect on Nav1.7 may underlie a rapid regulation of the sensibility of the somatosensory system. Both NF-κB and Nav1.7 channels are critically implicated in many physiological functions and diseases. Background The advent of immune checkpoint therapy has been a tremendous advance in cancer treatment. However, the responses are still insufficient in patients with soft tissue sarcoma (STS). We aimed to identify rational combinations to increase the response to immune checkpoint therapy and improve survival.Methods Whole-exome sequencing (WES) was performed in 11 patients with liposarcoma. Somatic copy number alterations (SCNAs) were analyzed at the gene level to identify obvious amplification patterns in drug-target genes. The expression and prognostic value of class I histone deacetylases (HDACs) was evaluated in 49 patients with sarcoma in our center and confirmed in 263 sarcoma samples from The Tumor Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. Q-PCR, flow cytometry and RNA-seq were performed to determine the correlations between class I HDACs, chidamide and PD-L1 in vitro and in vivo. The efficacy of combining chidamide with PD-1 blockade was explored in an immunocompetent murine model and a small cohort of patients with advanced sarcoma. Western blot, ChIP assay and dual luciferase assessment were applied in the mechanistic study.Results The HDAC gene family was frequently amplified in STS. SCNAs in the HDAC gene family were extensively amplified in 8 of 11 (73%) patients with liposarcoma, based on a drug-target gene set, and we verified amplification in 76.65% (197/257) of cases by analyzing TCGA sarcoma cohort. Class I HDAC expression is associated with a poor prognosis for patients with STS, and its inhibition is responsible for promoting apoptosis and upregulating of programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1). The HDAC class I inhibitor chidamide significantly increases PD-L1 expression, increased the infiltration of CD8+ T cells and reduced the number of MDSCs in the tumor microenvironment. The combination of chidamide with an anti-PD-1 antibody significantly promotes tumor regression and improves survival in a murine model. Moreover, chidamide combined with the anti-PD-1 antibody toripalimab is effective in patients with advanced and metastatic sarcoma, and the side effects are tolerable. Mechanistically, chidamide increases histone acetylation at the PD-L1 gene through the activation of the transcriptional factor STAT1.Conclusions The combination of chidamide and anti-programmed cell death 1 (PD-1) therapy represents a potentially important strategy for STS.

Transition metal dichalcogenides represent an exciting class of earth-abundant hydrogen-from-water electrocatalysts, although low efficiencies limit commercialization. Here, authors present a doping strategy to induce a phase transition in cobalt selenide and boost H2-evolution performance.

Currently there is no effective treatment available for clinical patients suffering from neuropathic pain induced by chemotherapy paclitaxel. Puerarin is a major isoflavonoid extracted from the Chinese medical herb kudzu root, which has been used for treatment of cardiovascular disorders and brain injury. Here, we found that puerarin dose-dependently alleviated paclitaxel-induced neuropathic pain. At the same time, puerarin preferentially reduced the excitability and blocked the voltage-gated sodium (Nav) channels of dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons from paclitaxel-induced neuropathic pain rats. Furthermore, puerarin was a more potent blocker of tetrodotoxin-resistant (TTX-R) Nav channels than of tetrodotoxin-sensitive (TTX-S) Nav channels in chronic pain rats’ DRG neurons. In addition, puerarin had a stronger blocking effect on Nav1.8 channels in DRG neurons of neuropathic pain rats and β1 subunit siRNA can abolish this selective blocking effect on Nav1.8. Together, these results suggested that puerarin may preferentially block β1 subunit of Nav1.8 in sensory neurons contributed to its anti-paclitaxel induced neuropathic pain effect.

Graphene has attracted attention in the material field of functional microcapsules because of its excellent characteristics. The content and state of graphene in shells are critical for the properties of microcapsules, which are greatly affected by the charge adsorption equilibrium. The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of pH value on the microstructure and properties of self-assembly graphene microcapsules in regard to chemical engineering. Microcapsule samples were prepared containing liquid paraffin by a self-assembly polymerization method with graphene/organic hybrid shells. The morphology, average size and shell thickness parameters were investigated for five microcapsule samples fabricated under pH values of 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. The existence and state of graphene in dry microcapsule samples were analyzed by using methods of scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Fourier Transform Infrared Spectoscopy (FT-IR) and Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS) were applied to analyze the graphene content in shells. These results proved that graphene had existed in shells and the pH values greatly influenced the graphene deposition on shells. It was found that the microcapsule sample fabricated under pH = 5 experienced the largest graphene deposited on shells with the help of macromolecules entanglement and electrostatic adherence. This microcapsules sample had enhanced thermal stability and larger thermal conductivity because of additional graphene in shells. Nanoindentation tests showed this sample had the capability of deforming resistance under pressure coming from the composite structure of graphene/polymer structure. Moreover, more graphene decreased the penetrability of core material out of microcapsule shells.

We present the nondifferentiable approximate solution for local fractional Tricomi equation arising in fractal transonic flow by local fractional variational iteration method. Some illustrative examples are shown and graphs are also given.

BACKGROUND: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the main cause of blindness and the curative options are limited. The objective of this meta-analysis was to determine the association between aspirin use and risk of AMD. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was performed in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and reference lists. A meta-analysis was performed by STATA software. RESULTS: Ten studies involving 171,729 individuals examining the association between aspirin use and risk of AMD were included. Among the included studies, 2 were randomized-controlled trials (RCTs), 4 were case-control studies and 4 were cohort studies. The relative risks (RRs) were pooled using a random-effects model. Relative risks with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of aspirin use as a risk for AMD. The pooled RR of 10 included studies between the use of aspirin and risk of AMD was 1.09 (95% CI, 0.96-1.24). The same result was detected in early and late stage AMD subgroup analysis. In the subgroup analyses, the pooled RR of RCTs, case-control studies and cohort studies were 0.81 (95% CI, 0.64-1.02), 1.02 (95% CI, 0.92-1.14) and 1.08 (95% CI, 0.91-1.28), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The use of aspirin was not associated with the risk of AMD.

BACKGROUND: The opinion of application of indocyanine green (ICG) in the macular hole surgery was contradictory. Here we conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the effect of in internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling for macular hole surgery. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We searched electronic databases for comparative studies published before July 2012 of ILM peeling with and without ICG. Twenty-two studies including 1585 eyes were included. Visual acuity (VA) improvement, including the postoperative rate of ≥20/40 VA gained (OR, 0.65; 95% CI, 0.43 to 0.97; P = 0.033) and increased LogMAR (WMD, -0.09; 95% CI, -0.16 to -0.02; P = 0.011), was less in the ICG group. The risk of visual field defects was greater in the ICG group than in the non-ICG group. There was no significant difference in the rate of anatomical outcomes between ILM peeling procedures performed with and without ICG. RPE changes and other postoperative complications were not significantly different between the ICG and non-ICG groups. An additional analysis showed that the VA improvement of the ICG group was less than the non-ICG group only within the first year of follow up. A subgroup analysis showed that the rate of VA improvement was lower in the ICG group than in other adjuncts group. A higher rate of secondary closure and less VA improvement were observed in a high proportion (>0.1%) of the ICG group. A sensitivity analysis after the randomized-controlled trials were excluded from the meta-analysis demonstrated no differences compared with the overall results. CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis demonstrated that there is no evidence of clinical superiority in outcomes for ICG-assisted ILM peeling procedure over the non-ICG one. The toxicity of ICG should be considered when choosing the various staining methods.

Electron lenses were originally proposed for compensation of electromagnetic long-range and head-on beam-beam interactions of proton and antiproton beams [V. Shiltsev et al., Phys. Rev. ST Accel. Beams 2, 071001 (1999).PRABFM1098-440210.1103/PhysRevSTAB.2.071001]. Results of successful employment of two electron lenses built and installed in the Tevatron are reported by Shiltsev et al. [Phys. In this paper we present design features of the Tevatron electron lenses (TELs), discuss the generation of electron beams, describe different modes of operation, and outline the technical parameters of various subsystems.

In the collider run II, the Tevatron operates with 36 high intensity bunches of 980 GeV protons and antiprotons. Particles not captured by the Tevatron rf system pose a threat since they can quench the superconducting magnets during acceleration or at beam abort. We describe the main mechanisms for the origination of this uncaptured beam, and present measurements of its main parameters by means of a newly developed diagnostics system. The Tevatron electron lens is effectively used in the collider run II operation to remove uncaptured beam and keep its intensity in the abort gaps at a safe level.

Reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) by renewable electricity to produce multicarbon chemicals, such as ethylene (C2H4), continues to be a challenge because of insufficient Faradaic efficiency, low production rates, and complex mechanistic pathways. Here, we report that the rate-determining steps (RDS) on common copper (Cu) surfaces diverge in CO2 electroreduction, leading to distinct catalytic performances. Through a combination of experimental and computational studies, we reveal that C--C bond-making is the RDS on Cu(100), whereas the protonation of *CO with adsorbed water becomes rate-limiting on Cu(111) with a higher energy barrier. On an oxide-derived Cu(100)-dominant Cu catalyst, we reach a high C2H4 Faradaic efficiency of 72%, partial current density of 359 mA cm-2, and long-term stability exceeding 100 h at 500 mA cm-2, greatly outperforming its Cu(111)-rich counterpart. We further demonstrate constant C2H4 selectivity of >60% over 70 h in a membrane electrode assembly electrolyzer with a full-cell energy efficiency of 23.4%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Electrochemical synthesis of valuable chemicals and feedstocks through carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction in acidic electrolytes can surmount the considerable CO2 loss in alkaline and neutral conditions. However, achieving high productivity, while operating steadily in acidic electrolytes, remains a big challenge owing to the severe competing hydrogen evolution reaction. Here, we show that vertically grown bismuth nanosheets on a gas-diffusion layer can create numerous cavities as electrolyte reservoirs, which confine in situ–generated hydroxide and potassium ions and limit inward proton diffusion, producing locally alkaline environments. Based on this design, we achieve formic acid Faradaic efficiency of 96.3% and partial current density of 471 mA cm−2 at pH 2. When operated in a slim continuous-flow electrolyzer, the system exhibits a full-cell formic acid energy efficiency of 40% and a single pass carbon efficiency of 79% and performs steadily over 50 h. We further demonstrate the production of pure formic acid aqueous solution with a concentration of 4.2 weight %. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
