BACKGROUND: Chuankezhi (CKZ) injection is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) injection extracted from Chinese herbs Epimedium sagittatum (Yin Yang Huo) and Morinda officinalis (Bai Ji Tian). Studies have shown that CKZ has a positive effect on improving diabetic nephropathy and regulating immune function. Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is a kind of refractory nephropathy, which has been confirmed as closely associated with immunity. Whether CKZ is effective against FSGS and how it works warrant further study. This study aimed to verify the efficacy of CKZ in rats with steroid-resistant (SR) FSGS and explore its mechanism of action. METHODS: We established an SR FSGS model in male Sprague Dawley (SD) rats by injecting adriamycin into the tail vein. Based on group intervention and comparison, the primary efficacy parameters of FSGS were observed, including general condition, 24-hour urine protein, serum albumin, cholesterol, triglyceride, and renal pathological changes. Network pharmacological analysis and molecular docking were used to predict the mechanism of action of CKZ. Finally, we used quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and western blot (WB) to detect messenger RNA (mRNA) expression and protein phosphorylation at specific targets in rat kidney tissue to validate the predicted results. RESULTS: Intramuscular injection of CKZ had a dose-dependent effect in SR FSGS model rats, including lowering urine protein, increasing serum albumin, lowering cholesterol and triglyceride, and treating pathological lesions in the kidney. Network pharmacological analysis and Molecular docking revealed that 5 active components (Icariin, Icariside II, Epimedin C, Icaritin, and Noricaritin) might be the critical components. The findings also revealed that Akt was perhaps the critical target gene, the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway was perhaps the critical pathway, and reversible protein phosphorylation was probably the critical biological process. The qPCR and WB analyses showed that CKZ significantly increased the relative mRNA expression and protein phosphorylation of PI3K and Akt, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that intramuscular injection of CKZ has a significant therapeutic effect in SR FSGS rats, which may be associated with the activation of PI3K-Akt signaling by CKZ.

Studies have found that molecular targets that regulate tissue development are also involved in regulating tissue regeneration. Erythropoietin-producing hepatocyte A4 (EphA4) not only plays a guiding role in neurite outgrowth during the development of the central nervous system (CNS) but also induces injured axon retraction and inhibits axon regeneration after spinal cord injury (SCI). EphA4 targets several ephrin ligands (including ephrin-A and ephrin-B) and is involved in cortical cell migration, axon guidance, synapse formation and astrocyte function. However, how EphA4 affects axon regeneration after SCI remains unclear. This study focuses on the effect and mechanism of EphA4-regulated astrocyte function in neuronal regeneration after SCI. Our research found that EphA4 expression increased significantly after SCI and peaked at 3 days post-injury; accordingly, we identified the cellular localization of EphA4 and ephrin-B ligands in neurons and astrocytes after SCI. EphA4 was mainly expressed on the surface of neurons, ephrin-B1 and ephrin-B3 were mainly localized on astrocytes, and ephrin-B2 was distributed on both neurons and astrocytes. To further elucidate the effect of EphA4 on astrocyte function after SCI, we detected the related cytokines secreted by astrocytes in vivo. We found that the levels of neurotrophic factors including nerve growth factor (NGF) and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) increased significantly after SCI (NGF peaked at 3 days and bFGF peaked at 7 days); the expression of laminin and fibronectin increased gradually after SCI; the expression of inflammatory factors [interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-6] increased significantly from 4 h to 7 days after SCI; and the levels of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), a marker of astrocyte activation, and chondroitin sulphate proteoglycan (CSPG), the main component of glial scars, both peaked at 7 days after SCI. Using a damaged astrocyte model in vitro, we similarly found that the levels of related cytokines increased after injury. Consequently, we observed the effect of damaged astrocytes on neurite outgrowth and regeneration, and the results showed that damaged astrocytes hindered neurite outgrowth and regeneration; however, the inhibitory effect of injured astrocytes on neurite regeneration was reduced following ephrin-B receptor knockdown or inflammatory inhibition at 24 h after astrocyte injury. Our results showed that EphA4 regulates the secretion of neurotrophic factors, adhesion molecules, inflammatory factors and glial scar formation by binding with the ligand ephrin-B located on the surface of astrocytes. EphA4 affects neurite outgrowth and regeneration after SCI by regulating astrocyte function.

With prosperity, decay, and another spring, molecular ferroelectrics have passed a hundred years since Valasek first discovered ferroelectricity in the molecular compound Rochelle salt. Recently, the proposal of ferroelectrochemistry has injected new vigor into this century-old research field. It should be highlighted that piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) technique, as a non-destructive imaging and manipulation method for ferroelectric domains at the nanoscale, can significantly speed up the design rate of molecular ferroelectrics as well as enhance the ferroelectric and piezoelectric performances relying on domain engineering. Herein, we provide a brief review of the contribution of the PFM technique toward assisting the design and performance optimization of molecular ferroelectrics. Relying on the relationship between ferroelectric domains and crystallography, together with other physical characteristics such as domain switching and piezoelectricity, we believe that the PFM technique can be effectively applied to assist the design of high-performance molecular ferroelectrics equipped with multifunctionality, and thereby facilitate their practical utilization in optics, electronics, magnetics, thermotics, and mechanics among others.

Ferroelectric materials have a variety of technological applications, as transducers, capacitors, sensors, etc. Great interest in molecular ferroelectrics has emerged because of their structural flexibility, tunability, and homochirality. However, the discoveries of molecular ferroelectrics are not abundant. The lack of chemical design is the main challenge in realizing new molecular ferroelectrics. Consequently, chemical design approaches, including the ideas of introducing quasi-spherical theory, homochirality, and H/F substitution, have been developed recently. Through these advanced methodologies, a wide range of ferroelectrics were successfully synthesized, changing the blind search into a targeted chemical design. In this Perspective, we aim to provide insight into the fundamental chemistry and physics of molecular ferroelectrics and propose the concept of "ferroelectrochemistry", concerned with the targeted design and performance optimization of molecular ferroelectrics from the chemical point of view. We start with the basic theories used in the modification of chemical structures for new molecular ferroelectrics, such as the quasi-spherical theory. After that, we focus on the fundamentals of homochirality from the perspective of chemistry and advantages of introducing a homochiral molecule within the scope of ferroelectrics. Further, we explore another design strategy, H/F substitution, as an analogue of the H/D isotope effect. The introduction of a F atom usually does not change the polar point group but may induce a minor structural disruption that enhances physical properties such as Curie temperature and spontaneous polarization. We hope our comprehensive studies on the targeted design and performance optimization strategies for molecular ferroelectrics may build up and enrich the content of ferroelectrochemistry.

Molecular ferroelectrics are attracting tremendous interest because of their easy and environmental-friendly processing, low acoustic impedance, and mechanical flexibility. Their ferroelectric mechanism is mainly ascribed to the order-disorder transition of molecules such as spherical 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2] octane (DABCO) and quinuclidine. Here, we present two molecular ferroelectrics, [HDABCO][TFSA] and its deuterated one [DDABCO][TFSA] (TFSA = bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)ammonium), whose ferroelectricity is triggered by the proton ordering. This is the first time that the protons show a thermally fluctuated bistability with a double-well potential in DABCO-based ferroelectrics. A large deuterium isotope effect (ΔT = ∼53 K) not only proves that they are hydrogen-bonded ferroelectrics but also extends the ferroelectric working temperature range to room temperature. The superfast polarization switching of 100 kHz and ultralow coercive voltage of 1 V (far less than 5 V required for commercially available ferroelectric devices), benefiting from the low energy for proton transfer, allow [DDABCO][TFSA] a great potential for memory devices with low-voltage, high-speed operation. This work should inspire further exploration of hydrogen-bonded molecular ferroelectrics for flexible and wearable devices with the low-power information storage.

Molecular ferroelectrics have attracted considerable interests because of their easy and environmentally friendly processing, low acoustical impedance and mechanical flexibility. Herein, a molecular thermochromic ferroelectric, N,N'-dimethyl-1,4-diazoniabicyclo[2.2.2]octonium tetrachlorocuprate(II) ([DMe-DABCO]CuCl4 ) is reported, which shows both excellent ferroelectricity and intriguing thermochromism. [DMe-DABCO]CuCl4 undergoes a ferroelectric phase transition from Pca21 to Pbcm at a significantly high Curie temperature of 413 K, accompanied by a color change from yellow to red that is due to the remarkable deformation of [CuCl4 ]2- tetrahedron, where the ferroelectric and paraelectric phases correspond to yellow and red, respectively. Combined with multiple bistable physical properties, [DMe-DABCO]CuCl4 would be a promising candidate for next-generation smart devices, and should inspire further exploration of multifunctional molecular ferroelectrics.

Piezoelectric sensors that can work under various conditions with superior performance are highly desirable with the arrival of the Internet of Things. For practical applications, a large piezoelectric voltage coefficient g and a high Curie temperature Tc are critical to the performance of piezoelectric sensors. Here, we report a two-dimensional perovskite ferroelectric (4-aminotetrahydropyran)2PbBr4 [(ATHP)2PbBr4] with a saturated polarization of 5.6 μC cm-2, high Tc of 503 K [above that of BaTiO3 (BTO, 393 K)], and extremely large g33 of 660.3 × 10-3 V m N-1 [much beyond that of Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PZT) ceramics (20 to 40 × 10-3 V m N-1), more than 2 times higher than that of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF, about 286.7 × 10-3 V m N-1)]. Combined with the advantages of molecular ferroelectrics, such as light weight, easy and environmentally friendly processing, and mechanical flexibility, (ATHP)2PbBr4 would be a competitive candidate for next-generation smart piezoelectric sensors in flexible devices, soft robotics, and biomedical devices.

Two-dimensional (2D) organic-inorganic perovskites (OIPs), with improved material stability over their 3D counterparts, are highly desirable for device applications. It is their considerable structural diversity that offers an unprecedented opportunity to engineer materials with fine-tuning functionalities. The isosteric substitution of hydrogen by an electronegative fluorine atom has been proposed as a useful route to improve the photovoltaic performance of 2D OIPs, whereas its valuable role in developing ferroelectricity is still waiting for further exploration. Herein, for the first time we applied fluorinated aromatic cations in extending the family of 2D OIP ferroelectrics, and successfully obtained [2-fluorobenzylammonium]2PbCl4 as a high-performance ferroelectric semiconductor. The failures in the nonferroelectric [4-fluorobenzylammonium]2PbCl4 and [3-fluorobenzylammonium]2PbCl4 demonstrate that the selective introduction of fluorine in correct structural positions is particularly essential. This work represents an unprecedented proof-of-concept in the use of fluorinated aromatic cations for the targeted design of excellent 2D OIP ferroelectrics, and is believed to inspire the future development of low-cost, high-efficiency, and stable device applications.

The crystal structures of three quinuclidine-based compounds, namely (1-azabicyclo[2.2.2]octan-3-ylidene)hydrazine monohydrate, C7H13N3·H2O (1), 1,2-bis(1-azabicyclo[2.2.2]octan-3-ylidene)hydrazine, C14H22N4 (2), and 1,2-bis(1-azoniabicyclo[2.2.2]octan-3-ylidene)hydrazine dichloride, C14H24N4 2+·2Cl− (3), are reported. In the crystal structure of 1, the quinuclidine-substituted hydrazine and water molecules are linked through N—H...O and O—H...N hydrogen bonds, forming a two-dimensional array. The compound crystallizes in the centrosymmetric space group P21/c. Compound 2 was refined in the space group Pccn and exhibits no hydrogen bonding. However, its hydrochloride form 3 crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric space group Pc. It shows a three-dimensional network structure via intermolecular hydrogen bonding (N—H...C and N/C—H...Cl). Compound 3, with its acentric structure, shows strong second harmonic activity.

Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite-type multiferroics have attracted considerable research interest owing to their fundamental scientific significance and promising technological applications in sensors and multiple-state memories. The recent achievements with divalent metal dicyanamide compounds revealed such malleable frameworks as a unique platform for developing novel functional materials. Herein, two 3D organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites [Et3 P(CH2 )2 F][Mn(dca)3 ] (1) and [Et3 P(CH2 )2 Cl][Mn(dca)3 ] (2) (dca=dicyanamide, N(CN)2 - ) are presented. Accompanying the sequential phase transitions, they display a broad range of intriguing physical properties, including above room temperature ferroelastic behavior, switchable dielectricity, and low-temperature antiferromagnetic ordering (Tc =2.4 K for both 1 and 2). It is also worth noting that the spontaneous strain value of 1 is far beyond that of 2 in the first ferroelastic phase, as a result of the precise halogen substitution. From the point view of molecular design, this work should inspire further exploration of multifunctional molecular materials with desirable properties.

A flexible strategy for piezoelectrics Piezoelectric materials produce charge when they are deformed, making them ideal for various types of sensors. However, virtually all piezoelectric materials are ceramics, which are far from ideal for applications requiring flexible sensors. Liao et al. now describe a molecular material with piezoelectric properties comparable to the industry-standard ceramic lead zirconate titanate. Piezoelectric materials are a class of important functional materials applied in high-voltage sources, sensors, vibration reducers, actuators, motors, and so on. Herein, [(CH3 )3 S]3 [Bi2 Br9 ](1) is a brilliant semiconducting organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite-type non-ferroelectric piezoelectric with excellent piezoelectricity. Strikingly, the value of the piezoelectric coefficient d33 is estimated as ≈18 pC N-1 . Such a large piezoelectric coefficient in non-ferroelectric piezoelectric has been scarcely reported and is comparable with those of typically one-composition non-ferroelectric piezoelectrics such as ZnO (3pC N-1 ) and much greater than those of most known typical materials. In addition, 1 exhibits semiconducting behavior with an optical band gap of ≈2.58 eV that is lower than the reported value of 3.37 eV for ZnO. This discovery opens a new avenue to exploit molecular non-ferroelectric piezoelectric and should stimulate further exploration of non-ferroelectric piezoelectric due to their high stability and low loss characteristics.

[C6N2H18][SbI5] (1), a novel metal halide semiconductor with dielectric relaxation behavior, has been successfully synthesized, in which the cavities between the one-dimensional [SbI5] n2- polyanions are occupied by 2-methyl-1,5-pentanediammonium (2-MPDA) cations. 1 undergoes a reversible solid-state phase transition at TC = 192.7 K and shows a step-like dielectric anomaly. Interestingly, above TC, distinct dielectric dispersion in a wide temperature range is also witnessed. Remarkably, the solid state UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectrum of 1 exhibits a slightly gentler absorption edge at about 650 nm; that is, 1 adopts an indirect band gap with 1.92 electron volts. The combined narrow band gap, strong photoconductivity effect, and excellent dielectric relaxation might shed light on the exploitation of lead-free hybrid metal halide molecular materials with promising application prospects in thermoresponsive relaxation-type dielectric materials and photovoltaic conversion devices.

The past decade has witnessed much progress in designing molecular ferroelectrics, whose intrinsic mechanical flexibility, structural tunability, and easy processability are desirable for next-generation flexible and wearable electronic devices. However, an obstacle in expanding their promising applications in nonvolatile memory elements, capacitors, and sensors is effectively modulating the Curie temperature ( Tc). Here, taking advantage of fluorine substitution on the reported molecular ferroelectric, (pyrrolidinium)MnCl3, we present enantiomeric perovskite ferroelectrics, namely, ( R) - and ( S) -3-(fluoropyrrolidinium)MnCl3. The close van der Waal's radii and the similar steric parameters between H and F atoms ensure the minimum disruption of the crystal structure, while their different electronegativity and polarizability can trigger significant changes in the physical and chemical properties. As expected, the Tc gets successfully increased from 295 K in (pyrrolidinium)MnCl3 to 333 K in these two homochiral compounds. Such a dramatic enhancement of 38 K signifies an important step toward designing high- Tc molecular ferroelectrics. In the light of the conceptually new idea of fluorine substitution, one could look forward to a continuous succession of new molecular ferroelectric materials and technology developments.

Since the associations of fermented dairy foods intake with risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) remained inconsistent, we carried out this meta-analysis on all published cohort studies to estimate the overall effect. We searched the PubMed and CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure) databases for all articles within a range of published years from 1980 to 2018 on the association between fermented dairy foods intake and CVD risk. Finally, 10 studies met the inclusion criteria for this study, with 385,122 participants, 1,392 Myocardial infarction, 4,490 coronary heart disease (CHD), 7,078 stroke, and 51,707 uncategorized CVD cases. Overall, statistical evidence of significantly decreased CVD risk was found to be associated with fermented dairy foods intake (OR = 0.83, 95% CI = 0.76-0.91). In subgroup analysis, cheese and yogurt consumptions were associated with decreased CVD risk (OR = 0.87, 95% CI = 0.80-0.94 for cheese and OR = 0. 78, 95% CI = 0.67-0.89 for yogurt). Our meta-analysis indicated that fermented dairy foods intake was associated with decreased CVD risk.

Ferroelectric polarization is sensitive to external stimuli, such as temperature or pressure, the variation of which can induce a slight change in crystal structure. Similarly, for ferroelectric crystals in host–guest systems, the inclusion of different guest molecules can affect the crystal packing a small amount; however, it may alter the ferroelectric properties significantly. In this report, we discovered that the supramolecular host–guest system Cu(1,10-phen)2SeO4·(diol) (phen is the abbreviation of phenanthroline) can distinguish cis–trans isomers via physical signal feedback, i.e. dielectric/ferroelectric responses. The supramolecular crystal is nonferroelectric and shows inconspicuous dielectric behavior when trans-1,2-cyclohexanediol is included, while a ferroelectric system is achieved when the host interacts with cis-1,2-cyclohexanediol. Moreover, the ferroelectric–paraelectric phase transition involved in cis-1,2-cyclohexanediol occurs together with an interesting chair-boat conformation change, as well as an order–disorder transition. As far as we know, this is the first discovery showing that dielectric/ferroelectric signal responses can be used to distinguish cis–trans isomers in the field of ferroelectric materials. This finding enriches studies of the molecular ferroelectric family and might provide inspiration for smart device design.

The significant Tc enhancement of 110 K in [N-fluoromethyldabconium] triiodide lead caused by the promising design of H/F substitution is the first and unprecedented, opening up an applicable and universal strategy to effectively regulate the Tc working temperature in phase transition materials.

Organic–inorganic hybrid materials with a high-temperature phase transition have been widely applied as a kind of smart material. In this work, a new organic–inorganic 2H-perovskite compound, namely [Me3NCH2CH3]CdCl3 (1), is reported with a high temperature dielectric transition showing excellent reversibility and sustainability. 1 has an ABX3 hybrid perovskite structure, where A is a [Me3NCH2CH3]+ cation, B is a divalent metal atom, and X is a halogen atom. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dielectric measurements were applied for further characterization. Variable temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed that 1 crystallizes in the orthorhombic Pbca space group (No. 61) at 293 K and hexagonal P63/mmc space group (No. 194) at 363 K. The structural phase transition is primarily attributed to an ordered–disordered type resulting from the [Me3NCH2CH3]+ cations. Organic–inorganic perovskite compounds, as a result of a long exploration history and forward-looking prospects, can deepen research into molecular materials and their physical properties can be effectively optimized in the next-generation of temperature-responsive electrical switches.

In this paper, three zero-dimensional organic–inorganic hybrid compounds [(CH3)3S]2[CdBr4] (1), [(CH3)3S]2[MnBr4] (2) and [(CH3)3S]2[ZnBr4] (3) were synthesized. The phase transition behavior of 1, 2 and 3 was well characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and variable temperature single crystal diffraction measurements. The phase transition temperature of 1, 2 and 3 was at ca. 315 K in the heating process. The vigorous ordered–disordered reorientation and displacement motion of [(Me3)3S]+ and [MBr4]2− of 1, 2 and 3 induce the structural phase transition from the centrosymmetric (CS) space group Pnma to the non-centrosymmetric (NCS) space group P212121. The apparent second-harmonic generation (SHG) switching responses further confirm this CS to NCS symmetry breaking. Moreover, dielectric studies illustrate that 1, 2 and 3 display distinctly switchable dielectric behavior, revealing their potential application in dielectric switches. This finding suggests that sulfonium-based organic–inorganic hybrids can be used to build phase transition materials, broadening the way for exploring dielectric and nonlinear optical (NLO) switching materials.

A novel organic-inorganic ABX3 perovskite-type material with specific hydrogen bonding interactions, N,N-dimethylethanolammonium trichlorocadmate ([DMEA]CdCl3), has been synthesized as a phase transition material. It is notable that the DMEA cations are arranged to form one-dimensional chains connected by hydrogen bonds at room temperature, which are very sparse in other perovskite-type compounds. The strong intermolecular interactions have made the phase transition temperature of the material reach up to 429 K, as confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry measurements, variable-temperature structural analyses, and dielectric measurements. The origin of the symmetry-breaking phase transition is associated with the motion or reorientation of the DMEA cations, accompanied by the crystal structures from orthorhombic Pnma to monoclinic P21/c with the temperature decreases. The finding of [DMEA]CdCl3 with unprecedented hydrogen bonding interactions has opened a new avenue to design novel phase transition materials with higher transition temperatures.

Solid-state molecular rotor-type materials such as host-guest inclusion compounds are very desirable for the construction of molecular ferroelectrics. However, they usually have a low Curie temperature (Tc) and uniaxial nature, severely hindering their practical applications. Herein, by regulating the anion to control "momentum matching" in the crystal structure, we successfully designed a high-temperature multiaxial host-guest inclusion ferroelectric [(MeO-C6H4-NH3)(18-crown-6)][TFSA] (MeO-C6H4-NH3 = 4-methoxyanilinium, TFSA = bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)ammonium) with the Aizu notation of mmmFm. Compared to the parent uniaxial ferroelectric [(MeO-C6H4-NH3)(18-crown-6)][BF4] with a Tc of 127 K, the introduction of larger TFSA anions brings a lower crystal symmetry at room temperature and a higher energy barrier of molecular motions in phase transition, giving [(MeO-C6H4-NH3)(18-crown-6)][TFSA] multiaxial ferroelectricity and a high Tc up to 415 K (above that of BaTiO3). To our knowledge, such a record temperature enhancement of 288 K makes its Tc the highest among the reported crown-ether-based ferroelectrics, giving a wide working temperature range for applications in data storage, temperature sensing, actuation, and so on. This work will provide guidance and inspiration for designing high-Tc host-guest inclusion ferroelectrics.

Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) are attracting tremendous interest for their great scientific and technological potential in photovoltaics and optoelectronics. Although the ferroelectricity in 2D HOIPs has been greatly developed, however, to date no phosphonium-based 2D HOIP ferroelectrics have yet been found. Meanwhile, electrostriction plays an important role in the electromechanical behavior of ferroelectrics, while it has never been reported for 2D HOIP ferroelectrics. Here, we present the first phosphonium-based 2D HOIP ferroelectric (EATMP)PbBr4 (EATMP = (2-aminoethyl)trimethylphosphanium) with a direct bandgap of 2.84 eV. Notably, (EATMP)PbBr4 possesses a high Curie temperature of 534 K, which is the highest among all reported 2D HOIP ferroelectrics. Moreover, it exhibits a large electrostrictive coefficient of about 3.96 m4 C-2 as well, far exceeding those of PVDF (1.3 m4 C-2) and inorganic ones (∼0.034-0.096 m4 C-2). With excellent ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties and the merit of easy fabrication, (EATMP)PbBr4 shows great potential in applications for future smart devices of actuators, transducers, and sensors.

Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs), which possess the merits of good material stability, structural diversity, and ease of fabrication, are highly desirable for widespread applications of ferroelectrics, solar cells, and electroluminescent devices. Although some molecular design strategies toward ferroelectrics have been proposed, however, it is still a great challenge to precisely induce and optimize the ferroelectricity in 2D HOIPs. Here, for the first time through perfluorinated substitution strategy, we successfully design a high-performance 2D HOIP ferroelectric, (perfluorobenzylammonium)

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) with the general formula ABX3 hold phenomenal research interest for their great scientific and technological potential in photovoltaic, piezoelectric, and electroluminescent devices. It is their considerable structural diversity that offers a good opportunity to build a variety of HOIP structures with various functionalities. However, no organometallic-based HOIP piezoelectrics have yet been found, despite the structural diversity and functional richness of organometallic compounds such as the ferrocene-based family. Here, for the first time, we report an organometallic-based HOIP piezoelectric, [(ferrocenylmethyl)trimethylammonium]PbI3. Benefitting from the stability of ferrocene-based cations, excellent piezoelectric performance, comparable to that of LiNbO3, can be obtained and optimized by tuning the anionic framework. The involvement of organometallic cations enables a narrow band gap of 2.37 eV, much lower than those of most HOIPs and some inorganic semiconductors. This work provides a new future direction for the study of perovskites and will inspire intriguing research on organometallic-based HOIP piezoelectrics.
