Background: Differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) has been increasingly common in women of reproductive age. However, the evidence remains mixed regarding the association of DTC with adverse pregnancy outcomes in pregnant women previously diagnosed with DTC., Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study in the Peking University Third Hospital in Beijing, China between January 2012 and December 2022. We included singleton-pregnancy women with a pre-pregnancy DTC managed by surgical treatment (after-surgery DTC) or active surveillance (under-surveillance DTC). To reduce the confounding effects, we adopted a propensity score to match the after-surgery and under-surveillance DTC groups with the non-DTC group, respectively, on age, parity, gravidity, pre-pregnancy weight, height, and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. We used conditional logistics regressions, separately for the after-surgery and under-surveillance DTC groups, to estimate the adjusted associations of DTC with both the composite of adverse pregnancy outcomes and the specific mother-, neonate-, and placenta-related pregnancy outcomes., Results: After the propensity-score matching, the DTC and non-DTC groups were comparable in the measured confounders. In the after-surgery DTC group ( n  = 204), the risk of the composite or specific adverse pregnancy outcomes was not significantly different from that of the matched, non-DTC groups ( n  = 816; P  > 0.05), and the results showed no evidence of difference across different maternal thyroid dysfunctions, gestational thyrotropin levels, and other pre-specified subgroup variables. We observed broadly similar results in the under-surveillance DTC group ( n  = 37), except that the risk of preterm birth, preeclampsia, and delivering the low-birth-weight births was higher than that of the matched, non-DTC group [ n  = 148; OR (95% CI): 4.79 (1.31, 17.59); 4.00 (1.16, 13.82); 6.67 (1.59, 27.90)]., Conclusions: DTC was not associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes in pregnant women previously treated for DTC. Objective: To explore the association between obesity/overweight and the risk of malignancy in Hürthle cell neoplasms of the thyroid. Methods: The data of patients with complete data who were diagnosed with Hürthle cell neoplasms of the thyroid at the Third Hospital of Peking University from September 2016 to September 2023 were retrospectively collected. Based on postoperative pathological diagnosis, tumors were classified into thyroid Hürthle cell adenoma group and Hürthle cell carcinoma group. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was employed to explore the association between overweight/obesity and the risk of malignancy in Hürthle cell neoplasms of the thyroid. Results: A total of 102 patients (13 males and 89 females) were included, aged (48.7±13.1) years. There were 22 cases of thyroid Hürthle cell carcinoma and 80 cases of thyroid Hürthle cell adenoma. Univariate analysis showed that the rate of overweight/obesity in the Hürthle cell carcinoma group was higher than that in the adenoma group [73% (16/22) vs 46% (37/80), P =0.050]. Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that the overweight/obese patients had a higher risk of malignancy in Hürthle cell neoplasms of the thyroid compared with the non-overweight/obese patients ( OR =3.170, 95% CI : 1.126-9.955, P =0.035). Sensitivity analysis excluding individuals with multiple tumors was consistent with the main study results ( OR =2.878, 95% CI : 0.922-10.228, P =0.080). Conclusion: Overweight/obesity may be associated with a higher risk of malignancy in patients with Hürthle cell neoplasms of the thyroid.

We assess the associations between personality traits and co-occurrence of depressive symptoms and high BMI from adolescence to early adulthood. We employed a nationally representative cohort in China from 2010 to 2020 year. We included adolescents aged 10-19 years without depressive symptoms and unhealthy weight status (obesity, overweight, or thinness) at baseline and excluded those without any measurement of depressive symptoms or BMI at follow-ups. We assessed baseline personality traits in 7 dimensions of conscientiousness, openness, neuroticism, agreeableness, extraversion, self-esteem, and responsibility. We also assessed the combined effects of these 7 dimensions of personality traits by generating individual-level personality trait risk scores based on the weighted sum of all these 7 dimensions of personality traits. We measured the co-occurrence of depressive symptoms and high BMI using both a single measurement of depressive symptoms and BMI at the last follow-up and repeated measurements of them over 10 years. We used the multinomial logistic regression models to examine the exposure-outcome associations. At baseline, we included 1778 individuals (mean age: 14.4 year; female: 853 (48.0%)). At follow-ups, we observed increased risk of co-occurrence of depressive symptoms and high BMI per 1-SD increase in neuroticism score (1.95-2.38 odds ratio) or 1-SD decrease in self-esteem and conscientiousness (0.63-0.80 odds ratio; all P values < 0.05); we observed no evidence of associations between openness, agreeableness, extraversion, or responsibility and the risk of co-occurrence of depressive symptoms and high BMI (all P values > 0.05). For the combined effects of the 7 dimensions of personality traits, we found an elevated risk of co-occurrence of depressive symptoms and high BMI per 1-SD increase in the personality trait risk scores (OR (95% CI), single measurement at the last follow-up: 2.01, 1.66 to 2.43; trajectory classification using the repeated measurements 2.30, 1.55 to 3.42; average level using the repeated measurements: 2.27, 1.93 to 2.67). In this national cohort in China, personality traits were found to be associated with the co-occurrence of depressive symptoms and high BMI from adolescence to early adulthood. Numerous guidelines have called for personalized interventions to address childhood obesity. The role of fat mass and obesity-associated gene (FTO) in the risk of childhood obesity has been summarized. However, it remains unclear whether FTO could influence individual responses to obesity interventions, especially in children. To address this, we systematically reviewed 12,255 records across 10 databases/registers and included 13 lifestyle-based obesity interventions (3980 children with overweight/obesity) reporting changes in body mass index (BMI) Z-score, BMI, waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, and body fat percentage after interventions. These obesity-related outcomes were first compared between children carrying different FTO genotypes (rs9939609 or its proxy) and then synthesized by random-effect meta-analysis models. The results from single-group interventions showed no evidence of associations between FTO risk allele and changes in obesity-related outcomes after interventions (e.g., BMI Z-score: -0.01; 95% CI: -0.04, 0.01). The results from controlled trials showed that associations between the FTO risk allele and changes in obesity-related outcomes did not differ by intervention/control group. To conclude, the FTO risk allele might play a minor role in the response to obesity interventions among children. Context and Objective: Differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) is very common in women of reproductive age. However, it remains unclear whether pregnancy is associated with DTC progression before surgical treatment., Methods: This retrospective cohort study, conducted at the Peking University Third Hospital in Beijing, China between January 2012 and December 2022, included 311 eligible women aged 20 to 45 years. To control for potential confounders, we first used propensity score matching (PSM) to match the pregnant group (n = 48) with the nonpregnant group (n = 154) on age, tumor size, tumor type, and Hashimoto's thyroiditis status at baseline, and then used Cox proportional risk models stratified by the matched pairs to estimate the association of pregnancy with DTC progression., Results: After PSM, the pregnant and nonpregnant groups were well comparable at baseline (standardized difference < 10% and P > .05). Over an average observation period of 2.5 years, we observed no difference between the pregnant group and the matched nonpregnant group in DTC progression-free survival (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.96; 95% CI, 0.56 to 1.65; P = .895), tumor enlargement-free survival (HR = 0.99; 95% CI, 0.56 to 1.76; P = .969) or lymph node metastasis-free survival (LNM) (HR = 0.67; 95% CI, 0.21 to 2.13; P = .498). The postoperative pathological characteristics also showed no significant difference between the pregnant and nonpregnant groups (P > .05)., Conclusion: Pregnancy seemed to be irrelevant to DTC progression-free survival before surgical treatment. Background: Multiple lifestyle-based childhood obesity interventions have been conducted to address childhood obesity, but individual's response to the universal intervention approach varied greatly. Whether gene variants related to children and adolescents' varied responses to obesity interventions remained unclear., Aims: To determine the associations of gene variants with the changes in obesity- and metabolism-related indicators after obesity interventions in children and adolescents., Methods: Ten databases and registers (including grey literature) were searched. The lifestyle-based obesity interventions in children and adolescents (≤18 years) that reported the changes in obesity- (body mass index (BMI), BMI Z-score, waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), etc) and metabolism-related (glucose, cholesterol, etc) indicators by genotype after interventions were included. Our primary outcome was the mean difference of the changes in BMI Z-score by genotype after interventions, and secondary outcomes were changes in the remaining obesity- and metabolism-related indicators after interventions. We used the random-effects model to synthesize the results., Results: This review included 50 studies (15,354 children and adolescents with overweight/obesity) covering 102 genes and 174 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Approximately three-quarters of SNPs showed no evidence of association with the changes in obesity- or metabolic-related indicators after interventions. One quarter of SNPs were minorly associated with the changes in the BMI Z-score (median effect size: 0.001) with little clinical significance. Only 6 (12 %) studies focused on the accumulated effect of multiple gene variants., Conclusions: Gene variants that have been explored appear to play a minor role in lifestyle-based obesity interventions in children and adolescents. Background: Differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) is increasingly common in women of reproductive age. However, whether pregnancy increases the risk of DTC progression/recurrence after treatment remains controversial. The study aimed to assess the association of pregnancy with risk of progression in patients previously treated for DTC. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study following 123 pregnant women and 1376 nonpregnant women at Peking University Third Hospital after initial treatment for DTC between January 2012 and December 2022. To control the effect of confounding, we carefully matched pregnancy ( n  = 107) and nonpregnancy groups ( n  = 298) in terms of baseline characteristics by using propensity score matching (PSM). Results: At baseline, the pregnancy and nonpregnancy groups were balanced in all matched variables. At follow-up, the percentage of DTC progression in the two groups was 12 (11.8%) and 47 (15.8%), respectively. Regression models showed no evidence of association of pregnancy with the risk of progression (odds ratio: 0.74 and 95% confidence interval: 0.37-1.50; p  = 0.404), and remained consistent across long/short follow-up and other subgroup variables. We found that the shorter the time interval between treatment and pregnancy, the higher the risk of DTC progression ( p trend  = 0.019). Conclusions: The risk of DTC progression in pregnant women was not higher than that in the well-matched, nonpregnant women. For young women previously treated for DTC, disease progression might not be a concern for their future pregnancy plan, but it seems safer to wait at least 1 year before pregnancy compared with immediate pregnancy.

Background: A growing body of evidence has revealed an association between personality traits and obesity, but the findings regarding this association among children remain mixed. The aim of this review was to systematically summarize the literature regarding the associations between personality traits and childhood obesity., Methods: The study has been registered on PROSPERO (CRD42022306529). We searched a total of 8 databases up to July 1, 2023, to identify both published studies and grey literature written in English. Personality traits were classified into five dimensions based on the widely used Five-Factor Model. We conducted random effects meta-analyses to quantitatively synthesize the data. Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used to assess the quality of included studies., Results: A total of 7 studies were included. The pooled correlation coefficient of 2 studies was -0.09 (95 % CI: -0.17 to 0.00; I 2  = 0 %) and the pooled standardized mean difference of 3 studies was -0.08 (95 % CI: -0.13 to -0.03; I 2  = 66 %), indicating that conscientiousness was negatively associated with childhood obesity. No consistent patterns were found in the associations between the other 4 dimensions of personality traits and BMI/obesity in children., Limitations: Our findings should be interpreted with caution due to the exclusion of non-English studies, the limited generalizability to Eastern population, and the scarcity body of evidence for present topic., Conclusions: Low conscientiousness has been found to be consistently associated with childhood obesity. Background Pathological cardiac hypertrophy is a major cause of heart failure morbidity. The complex mechanism of intermolecular interactions underlying the pathogenesis of cardiac hypertrophy has led to a lack of development and application of therapeutic methods. Methods and Results Our study provides the first evidence that TRAF4, a member of the tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factor (TRAF) family, acts as a promoter of cardiac hypertrophy. Here, Western blotting assays demonstrated that TRAF4 is upregulated in cardiac hypertrophy. Additionally, TRAF4 deletion inhibits the development of cardiac hypertrophy in a mouse model after transverse aortic constriction surgery, whereas its overexpression promotes phenylephrine stimulation-induced cardiomyocyte hypertrophy in primary neonatal rat cardiomyocytes. Mechanistically, RNA-seq analysis revealed that TRAF4 promoted the activation of the protein kinase B pathway during cardiac hypertrophy. Moreover, we found that inhibition of protein kinase B phosphorylation rescued the aggravated cardiomyocyte hypertrophic phenotypes caused by TRAF4 overexpression in phenylephrine-treated neonatal rat cardiomyocytes, suggesting that TRAF4 may regulate cardiac hypertrophy in a protein kinase B-dependent manner. Conclusions Our results revealed the regulatory function of TRAF4 in cardiac hypertrophy, which may provide new insights into developing therapeutic and preventive targets for this disease.

Objective: To explore the association between rs2587552 polymorphism (has a strong lin-kage disequilibrium with rs1800497 which had been found in many studies to be related to obesity, r 2 =0.85) of DRD2 gene and the effect of a childhood obesity intervention in Chinese population, and provide a scientific basis for future personalized childhood obesity intervention based on genetic background., Methods: From a multi-center cluster randomized controlled trial studying the effect of a childhood obesity intervention, we enrolled 382 children from 8 primary schools (192 and 190 children from intervention and control groups, respectively) in Beijing as study subjects. Saliva was collected and DNA was extracted to detect the rs2587552 polymorphism of DRD2 gene, and the interactions between the gene and study arms on childhood obesity indicators [including body weight, body mass index (BMI), BMI Z-score, waist circumference, hip circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, waist-to-height ratio, and body fat percentage] were analyzed., Results: No association was found between rs2587552 polymorphism and the changes in hip circumference or body fat percentage in the intervention group ( P >0.05). However, in the control group, children carrying the A allele at DRD2 rs2587552 locus showed a greater increase in hip circumference and body fat percentage compared with those not carrying A allele ( P < 0.001). There were interactions between rs2587552 polymorphism of DRD2 gene and study arms on the changes in hip circumference and body fat percentage ( P =0.007 and 0.015, respectively). Compared with the control group, children in the intervention group carrying the A allele at DRD2 rs2587552 locus showed decrease in hip circumference by (-1.30 cm, 95% CI : -2.25 to -0.35, P =0.007) and decrease in body fat percentage by (-1.34%, 95% CI : -2.42 to -0.27, P =0.015) compared with those not carrying A allele. The results were consistent between the dominant model and the additive model (hip circumfe-rence: -0.66 cm, 95% CI : -1.28 to -0.03, P =0.041; body fat percentage: -0.69%, 95% CI : -1.40 to 0.02, P =0.056). No interaction was found between rs2587552 polymorphism and study arms on the changes in other childhood obesity-related indicators ( P >0.05)., Conclusion: Children carrying the A allele at rs2587552 polymorphism of DRD2 gene are more sensitive to intervention and showed more improvement in hip circumference and body fat percentage after the intervention, suggesting that future personalized childhood obesity lifestyle intervention can be carried out based on the rs2587552 polymorphism of DRD2 gene.

We designed and synthesized a new tripyridine dipyrrolide pincer ligand, which could be doubly deprotonated to provide five-nitrogen-donor sites and then utilized to prepare a subnanometric chiral silver cluster. The cluster belongs to an S 4 point group and shows a double-stranded helicate. DFT calculations were performed to analyze the electronic structure of the cluster. Interestingly, through hierarchical intercluster interactions, the cluster helicates evolve into complex secondary structures including a right-handed helix and a folded sheet, both of which are reminiscent of secondary structures of proteins, i.e. , an α-helix and an antiparallel β-sheet.

Background: Carnosol is a phytopolyphenol (diterpene) found and extracted from plants of Mediterranean diet, which has anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. However, its role in ischemic stroke has not been elucidated., Methods: Primary neurons subjected to oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) was used to investigate the effect of carnosol in vitro. A mouse MCAO model was used to evaluate the effect of carnosol on ischemic stroke in vivo. The mRNA level of inflammatory and apoptosis-related genes was determined by RT-PCR. The protein level of total and phosphorylated AMPK was determined by WB. H&E and Immunofluorescent assay was used to investigate the necrosis, inflammation and apoptosis in brain tissue., Results: Carnosol protected the activity of primary neurons subjected to oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) in vitro, as well as inhibited inflammation and apoptosis. Furthermore, carnosol could significantly reduce the infarct and edema volume and protect against neurological deficit in vivo, and had a significant inhibitory effect on brain neuroinflammation and apoptosis. Mechanically, carnosol could activate AMPK, and the effect of carnosol on cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury cell model could be abolished by AMPK phosphorylation inhibitor., Conclusion: Carnosol has a protective effect on ischemic stroke, and this effect is achieved through AMPK activation. Our study demonstrates the protective effect of carnosol on cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury and provides a new perspective for the clinical treatment of ischemic stroke., (Copyright © 2023. Background: Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most common malignancies in men. PCa is difficult to detect in its early stages, and most patients are diagnosed in the middle to late stages. At present, drug therapy for advanced PCa is still insufficient. Some patients develop drug resistance in the later stage of therapy, which leads to tumor recurrence, metastasis and even treatment failure. Therefore, it is crucial to find new and effective drugs to treat prostate cancer., Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the anti-cancer effect of salidroside, an active ingredient in a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, on PCa., Methods: Two human PCa cell lines, PC3 and DU145, were cultured and treated with salidroside. Cell viability and proliferation ability were analyzed through CCK-8 and colony assays, and cell migration ability was detected by Transwell and Scratch assays. RT-PCR and WB were used to detected the expression levels of moleculars related to cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration, and AKT signaling pathway. Forthmore, we performed rescue experiments with agonist to verify the affected signaling pathway., Results: Salidroside inhibited the proliferation, colony formation, and migration of PCa cells. Meanwhile, apoptosis of PCa cells was enhanced. Moreover, salidroside inhibited PI3K/AKT pathway in PCa cells. The treatment of AKT agonist 740Y-P abrogated the inhibitory effect of salidroside on the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway., Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that in PCa cells, salidroside inhibites proliferation and migration and promots apoptosis via inhibiting PI3K/AKT pathway.

Aim: To 3-dimensional radiographically assess the effect of titanium plate in guided bone regeneration (GBR) for the treatment of peri-implant ridge defects in esthetic zone., Material and Methods: Nineteen patients with buccal peri-implant defects in the maxillary esthetic zone were treated with GBR using xenograft, autogenous bone, and collagen membrane. Subjects were divided into two groups: control (conventional GBR, 10 patients with 16 implants) and test (GBR with an adjunctive titanium plate; nine patients with 15 implants). Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images obtained immediately after and 5-7 months following GBR were used to assess buccal crestal bone level (BBL) and buccal bone thickness (BBT) at different implant levels., Results: Thirty-one implants in 19 patients were evaluated. Titanium plate exposure occurred in three cases (33.33%) of the test group. After 5-7 months, the mean BBL was located 1.48 ± 0.71 mm coronal to the platform in the test group and 0.90 ± 3.03 mm coronal to the platform in the control group (p = 0.03). The mean over all BBT (BBT-M) was 4.16 ± 0.48 mm in the test group and 2.38 ± 0.97 mm in the control group (p < 0.01). More resorption occurred in the control group than in the test group regarding mean BBL (3.00 ± 3.11 mm vs. 0.78 ± 0.79 mm, respectively; p = 0.04), BBT-M change (1.87 ± 1.59 mm vs. 0.56 ± 0.33 mm, respectively; p = 0.02), and percentage change in BBT-M (40.69 ± 24.01% vs. 11.53 ± 5.86%, respectively; p < 0.01)., Conclusion: In the short-term, titanium plate-enhanced GBR maintained ridge dimensions better than conventional GBR did., (© 2022 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Ring-finger protein 5 (RNF5) is an E3 ubiquitin ligase which is expressed in a variety of human tissues. RNF5 is involved in the regulation of endoplasmic reticulum stress, inflammation, and innate immunity and plays an important role in the occurrence and development of various tumors. However, the role of RNF5 in cardiac hypertrophy has not been reported. In this study, we found the expression of RNF5 was increased in the hearts of mice with pathological cardiac hypertrophy. The loss-of-function research demonstrated that RNF5 deficiency exacerbated cardiac hypertrophy, whereas gain-of-function studies revealed that overexpression of RNF5 had opposite effects. The stimulator of interferon genes (STING) is a signaling molecule that can activate type I interferon immunity, which can meditate inflammation and immune response in many diseases. The protein-protein interaction experiments confirmed that STING interacted with RNF5. Further studies showed that RNF5 inhibited cardiac hypertrophy by promoting STING degradation through K48-linked polyubiquitination. With good contrast in T 1 and T 2 weighted imaging as well as low toxicity in 3- (4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, this work proposes the cross-linked polydimethylsiloxane colloids as a novel non-ionic contrast agent for gastrointestinal magnetic resonance imaging. The experiments of nuclear magnetic resonance spectra and relaxation show that within the interface of the colloids, there are nuclear Overhauser effect and transient nuclear Overhauser effect (cross-relaxation). Regarding the longitudinal relaxation experiments of CH 2 CH 2 O segments of Tween 80, a two spins system is found and modeled well by the equation I Z - I 0 =   S 0 ( ( 1 - X )   e - t D 1   - ( 1 + X )   e - t T 1 ) which is deduced based on the transient nuclear Overhauser effect proposed by Solomon. The arbitrary constant X is additionally added with the initial conditions ( I z  -  I 0 ) t =0  = -2 XS 0 and ( S z  -  S 0 ) t =0  = -2 S 0 . For the two spins system, D 1 and T 1 are corresponding to longitudinal relaxation times of the bound water and the CH 2 CH 2 O respectively. Concerning the transverse relaxation experiments of the CH 2 CH 2 O, they agree with the equation with three exponential decays, defined by three relaxation times, likely corresponding to three mechanisms. These mechanisms possibly are intramolecular and intermolecular dipole-dipole (DD) interactions and scalar coupling. Within the interface, hydrogen bonding causes the positive nuclear Overhauser effect of the CH 2 CH 2 O's nuclear magnetic resonance spectra, the transient nuclear Overhauser effect of the CH 2 CH 2 O's longitudinal relaxation experiments and the intermolecular dipole-dipole interactions of the CH 2 CH 2 O's transverse relaxation experiments.

It is well known that excessive cholesterol accumulation within hepatocytes deteriorates nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Augmenter of liver regeneration (ALR) has been reported to alleviate NAFLD through anti-apoptosis; however, whether ALR could protect liver from cholesterol-induced NAFLD remains unclear. Mice with heterozygous deletion of Gfer (the gene for ALR, Gfer +/- ) were generated, and liver steatosis was induced by either choline-deficient ethionine-supplemented, methionine choline-deficient diet for 4 weeks, or high-fat diet for 16 weeks. The results showed that Gfer +/- mice developed a more severe fatty liver phenotype than Gfer +/+ mice. The livers of Gfer +/- mice exhibited a higher concentration of cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein compared with the normal mice. Transcriptome-based analysis predicts low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) primarily involved in the metabolic pathway. The experiments further indicate that cholesterol accumulation within hepatocytes is closely associated with enhancing the expression of LDLR and activation of sterol regulatory element binding protein 2 (SREBP2). Because adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a critical regulator of SREBP2 activation, we measured whether the activity of AMPK was regulated by ALR. We found that knockdown of ALR expression inhibited the phosphorylation of LKB1, an upstream activator of AMPK, followed by AMPK inactivation and SREBP2 maturation/nuclear translocation, leading to extensive cholesterol accumulation. Meanwhile, cellular oxidative stress increased as a result of ALR knockdown, indicating that ALR might also have a role in suppressing reactive oxygen species production. Conclusion : Our results confirm that ALR regulates cholesterol metabolism and alleviates hepatic steatosis probably through the LKB1-AMPK-SREBP2-LDLR pathway in vivo and in vitro , providing a putative mechanism for combating fatty liver disease., (© 2020 The Authors. The anions in electrolytes are the carriers of lithium ions for lithium-organic redox flow batteries. Herein, we reported that the interactions between the electrolyte anions and electron-deficient redox-active organic molecules (anion-π interactions) have strong influences on the battery properties due to the anion-π-induced formation of radical anions or sandwich-like aggregates.

A super-π-acidic nanosized polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon with six imide groups at the corners was prepared from the pre-synthesized 7,8-dichlorobenzo[ghi]perylenetriimide through a combination reaction of Ullmann-type and C-H transformation, which exhibited enhanced anion-π interactions with various anions.

The aberrant release of Ca 2+ from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) contributes to the onset of ER stress, which is closely related to the pathogenesis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. We previously reported that augmenter of liver regeneration (ALR) alleviates ER stress and protects hepatocytes from lipotoxicity. However, the link between ALR protection and the suppression of ER stress remains unclear. In this study, we investigated whether the protection against liver steatosis afforded by ALR is related to its inhibition of calcium overflow from the ER to the mitochondria. The treatment of HepG2 cells with palmitic acid (PA) upregulated IP3R expression, triggering ER-luminal Ca 2+ release and inducing ER stress. However, in ALR-transfected (ALR-Tx) HepG2 cells, PA-induced cell injury was clearly alleviated compared with that in vector-Tx cells. After exposure to PA, IP3R expression was downregulated and ER stress was effectively inhibited in the ALR-Tx cells, and ER-Ca 2+ release and simultaneous mitochondrial Ca 2+ uptake were lower than those in vector-Tx cells. The knockdown of ALR expression with shRNA abolished the protective effects afforded by ALR transfection. PA treatment also suppressed the interaction between BCL-2 and IP3R in HepG2 cells, whereas this interaction was massively enhanced in the ALR-Tx cells, effectively reducing the IP3R-mediated ER-Ca 2+ release and thus mitochondrial Ca 2+ influx. Our results suggest that the inhibition of ER stress by ALR is related to the interruption of the interaction between BCL2 and IP3R, demonstrating a novel mechanism of ER stress resistance in ALR-Tx cells., (© 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Banana wilt disease, caused by the fungal pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense 4 (Foc4), is regarded as one of the most devastating diseases worldwide. Cavendish cultivar 'Yueyoukang 1' was shown to have significantly lower disease severity and incidence compared with susceptible cultivar 'Brazilian' in greenhouse and field trials. De novo sequencing technology was previously performed to investigate defense mechanism in middle resistant 'Nongke No 1' banana, but not in highly resistant cultivar 'Yueyoukang 1'. To gain more insights into the resistance mechanism in banana against Foc4, Illumina Solexa sequencing technology was utilized to perform transcriptome sequencing of 'Yueyoukang 1' and 'Brazilian' and characterize gene expression profile changes in the both two cultivars at days 0.5, 1, 3, 5 and 10 after infection with Foc4. The results showed that more massive transcriptional reprogramming occurs due to Foc4 treatment in 'Yueyoukang 1' than 'Brazilian', especially at the first three time points, which suggested that 'Yueyoukang 1' had much faster defense response against Foc4 infection than 'Brazilian'. Expression patterns of genes involved in 'Plant-pathogen interaction' and 'Plant hormone signal transduction' pathways were analyzed and compared between the two cultivars. Defense genes associated with CEBiP, BAK1, NB-LRR proteins, PR proteins, transcription factor and cell wall lignification were expressed stronger in 'Yueyoukang 1' than 'Brazilian', indicating that these genes play important roles in banana against Foc4 infection. However, genes related to hypersensitive reaction (HR) and senescence were up-regulated in 'Brazilian' but down-regulated in 'Yueyoukang 1', which suggested that HR and senescence may contribute to Foc4 infection. In addition, the resistance mechanism in highly resistant 'Yueyoukang 1' was found to differ from that in middle resistant 'Nongke No 1' banana. These results explain the resistance in the highly resistant cultivar and provide more insights in understanding the compatible and incompatible interactions between banana and Foc4.

We describe a facile low-temperature physical vapor deposition approach to fabricate porous network thin films constructed of nanowires of small organic molecules on a large area. Supermolecular assemblies of pyrene nanowires based on a combination of van der Waals forces and pi-pi stacking tend to hierarchically self-assemble to form uniform porous films using our techniques. The morphology of the films is studied and we also study several reasons influencing the process of assembly such as evaporation temperature, deposition temperature, and different kinds of substrate. The deposition temperature is determined to be the main reason for hierarchical aggregation. Typically prepared films exhibit unique optical properties, that is, multicolor red-green-blue emissions. This novel method can be applied to other organic molecular systems and may be potentially used to place nanoscaled building blocks directly on solid surfaces for fabricating large-area nanostructure-based flat screens.
