Background Tandem Spinal Stenosis (TSS) is a disease characterised by the narrowing of the spinal canal in two or more non-adjacent areas of the spine, often affecting both the cervical and lumbar vertebrae. Doctors and patients increasingly favour non-surgical treatments that have the function of relieving symptoms and improving outcomes. This systematic review aims to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of non-surgical therapies for TSS and comprehensively summarise existing evidence.Methods and analysis We will conduct comprehensive searches, both manual and electronic, of literature published up to 30 September 2024; database searches will commence after the publication of this agreement, with an estimated commencement date of 1 December 2024, and the end date is 31 May 2025, without language restrictions. Key databases such as MEDLINE, PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, WHO International Clinical Trial Registration Platform, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Biomedical Literature Database, China Scientific Journal Database and Wan-Fang Database will be explored. In addition, we will include resources such as library journals and conference abstracts. Following the identification and screening of all randomised controlled trials focusing on non-surgical treatments for TSS, two investigators will perform a meta-analysis of the included studies. The findings will be summarised as the risk ratio for binary data and the standardised or weighted mean difference for continuous data.Ethics and dissemination Ethical approval is not required, as the review does not involve individual patient data. The review’s findings will provide clinicians with evidence on using non-surgical treatments for TSS, disseminated through peer-reviewed publications or conferences.PROSPERO registration number CRD42024496634.

XIAP, or the X-linked Inhibitor of Apoptosis Protein, is the most extensively studied member within the IAP gene family. It possesses the capability to impede apoptosis through direct inhibition of caspase activity. Various kinds of cancers overexpress XIAP to enable cancer cells to avoid apoptosis. Consequently, the inhibition of XIAP holds significant clinical implications for the development of anti-tumor medications and the treatment of cancer. In this study, sterigmatocystin, a natural compound obtained from the genus asperigillus, was demonstrated to be able to induce apoptotic and autophagic cell death in liver cancer cells. Mechanistically, sterigmatocystin induces apoptosis by downregulation of XIAP expression. Additionally, sterigmatocystin treatment induces cell cycle arrest, blocks cell proliferation, and slows down colony formation in liver cancer cells. Importantly, sterigmatocystin exhibits a remarkable therapeutic effect in a nude mice model. Our findings revealed a novel mechanism through which sterigmatocystin induces apoptotic and autophagic cell death of liver cancer cells by suppressing XIAP expression, this offers a promising therapeutic approach for treating liver cancer patients.

Climate change, characterized by rising atmospheric CO2 levels and temperatures, poses significant challenges to global crop production. Sweet sorghum, a prominent C4 cereal extensively grown in arid areas, emerges as a promising candidate for sustainable bioenergy production. This study investigated the responses of photosynthesis and leaf-scale water use efficiency (WUE) to varying light intensity (I) in sweet sorghum under different temperature and CO2 conditions. Comparative analyses were conducted between the An-I, gs-I, Tr-I, WUEi-I, and WUEinst-I models proposed by Ye et al. and the widely utilized the non-rectangular hyperbolic (NRH) model for fitting light response curves. The Ye's models effectively replicated the light response curves of sweet sorghum, accurately capturing the diminishing intrinsic WUE (WUEi) and instantaneous WUE (WUEinst) trends with increasing I. The fitted maximum values of An, gs, Tr, WUEi, and WUEinst and their saturation light intensities closely matched observations, unlike the NRH model. Despite the NRH model demonstrating high R2 values for An-I, gs-I, and Tr-I modelling, it returned the maximum values significantly deviating from observed values and failed to generate saturation light intensities. It also inadequately represented WUE responses to I, overestimating WUE. Across different leaf temperatures, An, gs, and Tr of sweet sorghum displayed comparable light response patterns. Elevated temperatures increased maximum An, gs, and Tr but consistently declined maximum WUEi and WUEinst. However, WUEinst declined more sharply due to the disproportionate transpiration increase over carbon assimilation. Critically, sweet sorghum An saturated at current atmospheric CO2 levels, with no significant gains under 550 μmol mol−1. Instead, stomatal closure enhanced WUE under elevated CO2 by coordinated gs and Tr reductions rather than improved carbon assimilation. Nonetheless, this response diminished under simultaneously high temperature, suggesting intricate interplay between CO2 and temperature in modulating plant responses. These findings provide valuable insights into photosynthetic dynamics of sweet sorghum, aiding predictions of yield and optimization of cultivation practices. Moreover, our methodology serves as a valuable reference for evaluating leaf photosynthesis and WUE dynamics in diverse plant species.

The models used to describe the light response of electron transport rate in photosynthesis play a crucial role in determining two key parameters i.e., the maximum electron transport rate (Jmax) and the saturation light intensity (Isat). However, not all models accurately fit J–I curves, and determine the values of Jmax and Isat. Here, three models, namely the double exponential (DE) model, the non-rectangular hyperbolic (NRH) model, and a mechanistic model developed by one of the coauthors (Z-P Ye) and his coworkers (referred to as the mechanistic model), were compared in terms of their ability to fit J–I curves and estimate Jmax and Isat. Here, we apply these three models to a series of previously collected Chl a fluorescence data from seven photosynthetic organisms, grown under different conditions. Our results show that the mechanistic model performed well in describing the J–I curves, regardless of whether photoinhibition/dynamic down-regulation of photosystem II (PSII) occurs. Moreover, both Jmax and Isat estimated by this model are in very good agreement with the measured data. On the contrary, although the DE model simulates quite well the J–I curve for the species studied, it significantly overestimates both the Jmax of Amaranthus hypochondriacus and the Isat of Microcystis aeruginosa grown under NH4+-N supply. More importantly, the light intensity required to achieve the potential maximum of J (Js) estimated by this model exceeds the unexpected high value of 105 μmol photons m−2 s−1 for Triticum aestivum and A. hypochondriacus. The NRH model fails to characterize the J-I curves with dynamic down-regulation/photoinhibition for Abies alba, Oryza sativa and M. aeruginosa. In addition, this model also significantly overestimates the values of Jmax for T. aestivum at 21% O2 and A. hypochondriacus grown under normal condition, and significantly underestimates the values of Jmax for M. aeruginosa grown under NO3–N supply. Our study provides evidence that the ‘mechanistic model’ is much more suitable than both the DE and NRH models in fitting the J–I curves and in estimating the photosynthetic parameters. This is a powerful tool for studying light harvesting properties and the dynamic down-regulation of PSII/photoinhibition.

Investigation on intrinsic properties of photosynthetic pigment molecules participating in solar energy absorption and excitation, especially their eigen-absorption cross-section (σik) and effective absorption cross-section (σ′ik), is important to understand photosynthesis. Here, we present the development and application of a new method to determine these parameters, based on a mechanistic model of the photosynthetic electron flow-light response. The analysis with our method of a series of previously collected chlorophyll a fluorescence data shows that the absorption cross-section of photosynthetic pigment molecules has different values of approximately 10−21 m2, for several photosynthetic organisms grown under various conditions: (1) the conifer Abies alba Mill., grown under high light or low light; (2) Taxus baccata L., grown under fertilization or non-fertilization conditions; (3) Glycine max L. (Merr.), grown under a CO2 concentration of 400 or 600 μmol CO2 mol−1 in a leaf chamber under shaded conditions; (4) Zea mays L., at temperatures of 30°C or 35°C in a leaf chamber; (5) Osmanthus fragrans Loureiro, with shaded-leaf or sun-leaf; and (6) the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa FACHB905, grown under two different nitrogen supplies. Our results show that σik has the same order of magnitude (approximately 10−21 m2), and σ′ik for these species decreases with increasing light intensity, demonstrating the operation of a key regulatory mechanism to reduce solar absorption and avoid high light damage. Moreover, compared with other approaches, both σik and σ′ik can be more easily estimated by our method, even under various growth conditions (e.g., different light environment; different CO2, NO2, O2, and O3 concentrations; air temperatures; or water stress), regardless of the type of the sample (e.g., dilute or concentrated cell suspensions or leaves). Our results also show that CO2 concentration and temperature have little effect on σik values for G. max and Z. mays. Consequently, our approach provides a powerful tool to investigate light energy absorption of photosynthetic pigment molecules and gives us new information on how plants and cyanobacteria modify their light-harvesting properties under different stress conditions.

This paper proposes a compact $4 \times 4$ filtering microstrip patch antenna array with Dolph- Chebyshev distribution implemented by multilayer structure. The proposed antenna array features good filtering performance but contains no extra filtering parts in the feeding or the radiating element. The whole antenna array consists of four $1 \times 4$ antenna subarrays, each subarray is composed of four patch antennas which are coupled-fed by a single microstrip line. Inside the desired passband, by properly choosing the coupling area along the microstrip line, the patches are induced in-phase currents therefore achieving the excellent radiation characteristics. On the other hand, the four patches can’t be properly excited outside the passband which would enable radiation suppression performance. In order to implement a $4 \times 4$ filtering microstrip patch antenna array with low sidelobe level (SLL), four subarrays are combined and fed by Dolphy-Chebyshev excitation method. Finally, the proposed antenna array is implemented, fabricated and measured. The maximum measured gain in the passband is 14.7 dBi, and the radiation suppression outside the passband is better than 25 dB.

Corneal perforation is a rare and serious complication of ocular graft-versus-host disease (oGVHD) patients. This study was to retrospectively report seven corneal perforation patients after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Demographic, hematologic, and ophthalmological data of patients were clarified in detail. Nine eyes of seven corneal perforation patients were clarified (Cases 3 and 6 were bilateral and the others are unilateral). All the cases had other affected GVHD organs, especially skin involvement. The duration between HSCT and corneal perforation was usually long with 21 (17–145) months as median interval, whereas the duration between oGVHD diagnosis and corneal perforation was relatively shorter with 4 (2–81) months as median interval. Most patients presented to ophthalmology department with poor visual acuity, BUT and Schirmer’s test. Eyelid marginal hyperemia and irregularity were observed in most corneal perforation eyes. Keratoplasty or conjunctival flap covering (CFC) surgeries was performed after corneal perforation. After a long-term follow-up for most patients (median 21 months, range: 2–86 months), only two eyes of two patients (22.22%) had a final BCVA of 20/100 or better. Patients involved in both cutaneous GVHD and blepharitis indicate the aggressive development of oGVHD. Early diagnosis, long-term follow-up, and effective multi-disciplinary treatments for oGVHD patients are essential. Corticosteroids and immunosuppressor remain essential, whereas the use of topical corticosteroids should be carefully considered in corneal ulceration patients. In addition, appropriate surgeries should be performed to control oGVHD development in time.

AIM: To explore the significance of corneal epithelial thickness analysis in diagnosing early keratoconus. METHODS: There were 26 clinical keratoconus, 21 forme fruste keratoconus, 40 high corneal astigmatism (ΔK) and 40 low ΔK eyes involved in the study. Fourier-domain optical coherence tomography was used to measure the corneal epithelial thickness of four groups. The morphological features of topographic map and the thickness of corneal epithelial thinnest point were analyzed. The distribution curve of corneal epithelial thickness at 45°, 90°, and 135° axial directions that are through the pupil center was also analyzed. One-way ANOVA was performed to compare the data. RESULTS: The topographic map of forme fruste keratoconus corneal epithelial thickness was uniformity shape; crater shape existed only in clinical keratoconus group; and central island shape mainly existed in high ΔK group. The thinnest point of corneal epithelial thickness of forme fruste keratoconus group was significantly lower than that of low ΔK group (P=0.022). The thickness of corneal epithelium in the forme fruste keratoconus at 90° was thinner than that in the low astigmatism group at -1, and -2 mm points (P-1 mm=0.015, P-2 mm=0.036). CONCLUSION: The analysis of the thinnest point in forme fruste keratoconus corneal epithelium appears earlier than corneal epithelial remodeling. The topographic map of corneal epithelium in high ΔK eyes appears in central island shape, and can be used for the differential diagnosis of early keratoconus.

In this study, the polysaccharide was extracted by subcritical water from Dendrobium huoshanense. A novel polysaccharide (DHPs-1) was obtained through several purification steps and its structure and bioactivity were investigated. Structural analysis indicated that the weight-average molecular weight of DHPs-1 was 5.0 × 104 Da and it was mainly composed of glucose (65.04%), mannose (14.23%), galactose (8.17%), galacturonic acid (6.41%), rhamnose (2.34%), and xylose (1.25%). 1,4-Glcp, and 1,4,6-Galp were existed in the backbone of DHPs-1. The residues of 1,3,4-Galp, 1,4-Manp, 1,4-Galp, and 1,3,4,6-Galp could be in the backbone or the side chains with the non-reducing terminal of α-Manp. Bioactivity tests indicated that DHPs-1 had immunomodulatory activity in that it significantly enhanced transcript levels of cytokines [Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and Interleukin-10 (IL-10)]. DPPH and hydroxyl radical scavenging tests showed that it had good antioxidant activity. These results reveal that DHPs-1 could be developed as a safe immunomodulatory agent and antioxidant for pharmacological or functional food applications.

Water-soluble Cu-In-Zn-S quantum dots (CIZS QDs) with orange fluorescence have been synthesized with a glutathione (GSH) as stabilizer via facile a one-step hydrothermal method. The optimal reaction conditions of CIZS QDs including temperature, time, pH, and the molar ratios of precursors were studied. TEM results indicate that the aqueous-dispersible CIZS QDs are quasi-spherical, and the average diameters are 3.76 nm with excellent fluorescent stability. Furthermore, the cytotoxicity of CIZS QDs was investigated by the microcalorimetry combining with TEM and the IC50 was 10.2 μM. CIZS QDs showed a promising perspective in applications such as a fluorescent probe for bioimaging and biolabeling due to the low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility. Moreover, the CIZS QDs can distinguish Pb2+ ion from other ions, offering great potentials in lead ion determination in drinking water. According to the results of UV, XRD, FL, PL, and ITC methods, the mechanism of CIZS QDs-Pb2+ assay is due to hydrogen bonding or van der Waals forces in the formation of Pb2+ and CIZS QDs.

Accurately describing the light response curve of electron transport rate (J–I curve) and allocation of electron flow for ribulose biphosphate (RuBP) carboxylation (JC–I curve) and that for oxygenation (JO–I curve) is fundamental for modeling of light relations of electron flow at the whole-plant and ecosystem scales. The non-rectangular hyperbolic model (hereafter, NH model) has been widely used to characterize light response of net photosynthesis rate (An; An–I curve) and J–I curve. However, NH model has been reported to overestimate the maximum An (Anmax) and the maximum J (Jmax), largely due to its asymptotic function. Meanwhile, few efforts have been delivered for describing JC–I and JO–I curves. The long-standing challenge on describing An–I and J–I curves have been resolved by a recently developed An–I and J–I models (hereafter, Ye model), which adopt a nonasymptotic function. To test whether Ye model can resolve the challenge of NH model in reproducing J–I, JC–I and JO–I curves over light-limited, light-saturated, and photoinhibitory I levels, we compared the performances of Ye model and NH model against measurements on two C3 crops (Triticum aestivum L. and Glycine max L.) grown in field. The results showed that NH model significantly overestimated the Anmax and Jmax for both species, which can be accurately obtained by Ye model. Furthermore, NH model significantly overestimated the maximum electron flow for carboxylation (JC-max) but not the maximum electron flow for oxygenation (JO-max) for both species, disclosing the reason underlying the long-standing problem of NH model—overestimation of Jmax and Anmax.

Thus, the guiding significance of information philosophy in piano performance is discussed and further analyzed.

In CDN-P2P hybrid network,it is important for the cache eviction schemes to improve the delivery efficiency of content.However,most of them only consider the holistic popularity of content file,and neglect the difference between the individual popularities of segments within a content file.Hence,it was difficult to improve the hit rate of pre-cached content segments,and to reduce the user access delay.Hence based on the difference between the attributes of content popularity,a new cache eviction scheme (i.e.,Diff-Attribute) was proposed.Bewildered the holistic popularity of a content file,it also considered the individual popularity of its segment.More importantly,based on the concept of entropy,A method to measure the popularity difference between content files or segments was put forward.If the popularities of the segments within a content file are equalizing,its prefix segment would be pre-cached.Otherwise,the requested segments or files directly based on its popularity would be cached.Compared with traditional schemes (e.g.,LFU,LRU,MRU,FIFO),the simulation results show that Diff-Attribute can improve the cache hit rate and the byte hit rate by at least 6%,8% respectively,and can reduce the access startup delay rate and the transmission cost rate by at least 13%,7% respectively.

A user interest-aware content replica optimized placement algorithm (UIARP) is proposed.Firstly,the interest subjects of the user-collective are extracted from their content access logs by clustering algorithms,and according to the weighting of the individual interest degree,their collective interest degree would be got and updated in real time; then under the nonlinear optimization model,replicas of larger collective interest degree have priority to be placed,with the goal of minimizing the average response time,which achieves the maximum match between placing replicas and users’ content demand.This algorithm not only ensures that users get interested replicas quickly,but also improves the system efficiency.From four aspects including average response time,the matching degree of request response,load balancing and the utilization rate of adjacent replicas,using 1-Greedy-Insert or others as compared algorithms,the simulation re-sults show that each metric improves by 30% on average,which verifies the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract Background The survival of overwintering ticks, is critical for their subsequent population dynamics in the spring, and consequent transmission of tick-borne diseases. Survival is largely influenced by the severity of the winter temperatures and their degree of cold hardiness at the overwintering stage. The bush tick Haemaphysalis longicornis, is widely distributed in China, and can transmit various pathogens that pose serious medical/veterinary problems. In the present study we investigated the effect of low temperature stress to tick survival, super-cooling point and body content of water, glycerol and total protein. Methods After various temperature acclimations, the super-cooling point was measured by Ni/CrNi-thermocouples with a precision temperature recorder. Water content was determined from weight loss of the sample exposed to 60°C for 48 h. Glycerol content was determined using Free Glycerol Reagent as directed by the manufacturer, and total protein was determined using the Bradford assay. Results The 50% mortality temperatures for the adults and nymphs were -13.7°C and -15.2°C, respectively; and the discriminating temperatures for the adults and nymphs were -16.0°C and -17.0°C, respectively. The super-cooling points of the adults and nymphs were -19.0°C and -22.7°C, respectively. The water content of adult H. longicornis decreased substantially after acclimation at 0°C for 10 d, whereas the nymphs decreased after acclimation at 0°C for 20 d, and the glycerol and proteins of both nymphs and adults were significantly increased (p

In view of existing ARAS (adaptive response by attractor selection) models' shortcomings that was noise item produces an effect ambiguously and activity couldn't determine the opportunity of state changing correctly, an improved ARAS model was proposed. The model specifies the stochastic effect of the noise on the system by an attractor with a noise item. Through putting forward an activity formula inversely proportional to the partial difference between current path status and best path status, it was validated by Matlab with the improved model could increase the accuracy of load balancing in a simple case. A multi-path routing by ARAS mechanism (MPAM) based on AODV is proposed, which se-lects routing path with the improved ARAS model. Furthermore, the improved model is validated to be able to reduce the average network delay by OPNET.

During the RFID tag identification process, the tree-based anti-collision algorithms usually incur large amount of redundant data due to an excess of long query commands,which increases the communication overhead. To resolve this problem, a searching tree anti-collision algorithm with low-redundancy on the basis of regressive-style dynamic searching tree algorithm was proposed. In order to reduce the number of queries, a novel query mode was developed, i.e., single query with duo responses. Depending on the most significant collided bit, the collided tags respond in the first or second slot separately. In order to reduce the length of query command, the prefix matching circuit in tag was replaced with a counter, which eliminated the prefix as the parameter of query command. The predictive identification and block-ing technique were also introduced to avoid unnecessary queries. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the communication overhead is greatly reduced.

The experience showed that the predicted delay's accuracy was improved when the nodes were chosen around the given delay as anchors.Thus a distance range-aware IP network coordinate system(R-Vivaldi) was proposed.The main idea was:according to the approximate range of the predicted delay,the anchors were re-selected in the radius area of the approximate range to compute the new range.In accordance with the above process,the coordinate system constantly iterated the network distance and dynamically chose anchors until the prediction accuracy meet the requirement.Experiments show that the approach can not only effectively improve the prediction accuracy of delay but also overcome inconsistencies of the prediction accuracy to a certain extent.

Dihydroberkleasmin A (1), a new ester-substituted sesquiterpenoid related to the eremophilane class, together with the known compound berkleasmin C (2), were isolated from the fermentation broth of the plant endophytic fungus Pestalotiopsis photiniae. The structure of dihydroberkleasmin A (1) was elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis. The stereochemistry was assigned by comparison of the NMR spectroscopic data with those of berkleasmin A.
