Global climate change is expected to have a significant impact on ecosystems worldwide, especially for alpine meadows which are considered as one of the most vulnerable components. However, the effects of global warming on the plant nitrogen–phosphorus stoichiometry and resorption in alpine meadows remain unclear. Therefore, to investigate the plant nitrogen–phosphorus stoichiometry and resorption in alpine meadows on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, we conducted an artificial warming study using open-top chambers (OTCs) over the 3 years of warming period. We selected three dominant species, four height types of OTCs (0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1 m) and four warming methods (year-round warming, winter warming, summer–autumn–winter warming and spring–summer–autumn warming in the experiment) in this experiment. In our study, soil temperature significantly increased with increasing the height of OCTs under the different warming methods. Kobresia pygmaea presented an increase in nitrogen (N) limitation and Kobresia humilis presented an increase in phosphorus (P) limitation with increasing temperature, while Potentilla saundersiana was insensitive to temperature changes in terms of nitrogen and phosphorus limitations. Both nitrogen resorption efficiency:phosphorus resorption efficiency and N:P trends in response to rising temperatures were in the same direction. The differential responses of the chemical stoichiometry of the three species to warming were observed, reflecting that the responses of nitrogen and phosphorus limitations to warming are multifaceted, and the grassland ecosystems may exhibit a certain degree of self-regulatory capability. Our results show that using chemical dosage indicators of a single dominant species to represent the nitrogen and phosphorus limitations of the entire ecosystem is inaccurate, and using N:P to reflect the nutritional limitations might have been somewhat misjudged in the context of global warming. While there is an extensive body of research on the influence of climate warming on total soil microbial communities, our understanding of how rhizosphere and non‐rhizosphere soil microorganisms respond to warming remains limited. To address this knowledge gap, we investigated the impact of 4 years of soil warming on the diversity and composition of microbial communities in the rhizosphere and non‐rhizosphere soil of a temperate steppe, focusing on changes in root exudation rates and exudate compositions. We used open top chambers to simulate warming conditions, resulting in an average soil temperature increase of 1.1°C over a span of 4 years. Our results showed that, in the non‐rhizosphere soil, warming had no significant impact on dissolved organic carbon concentrations, compositions, or the abundance of soil microbial functional genes related to carbon and nitrogen cycling. Moreover, soil microbial diversity and community composition remained largely unaffected, although warming resulted in increased complexity of soil bacteria and fungi in the non‐rhizosphere soil. In contrast, warming resulted in a substantial decrease in root exudate carbon (by 19%) and nitrogen (by 12%) concentrations and induced changes in root exudate compositions, primarily characterized by a reduction in the abundance in alcohols, coenzymes and vitamins, and phenylpropanoids and polyketides. These changes in root exudation rates and exudate compositions resulted in significant shifts in rhizosphere soil microbial diversity and community composition, ultimately leading to a reduction in the complexity of rhizosphere bacterial and fungal community networks. Altered root exudation and rhizosphere microbial community composition therefore decreased the expression of functional genes related to soil carbon and nitrogen cycling. Interestingly, we found that changes in soil carbon‐related genes were primarily driven by the fungal communities and their responses to warming, both in the rhizosphere and non‐rhizosphere soil. The study of soil microbial structure and function in rhizosphere and non‐rhizosphere soil provides an ideal setting for understanding mechanisms for governing rhizosphere and non‐rhizosphere soil carbon and nitrogen cycles. Our results highlight the distinctly varied responses of soil microorganisms in the rhizosphere and non‐rhizosphere soil to climate warming. Fencing enclosures play an important role in improving ecological quality. There is a direct impact of implementing fencing enclosures on the change in soil quality. The soil quality index was used to examine the effects of fencing enclosures for different years (7 and 11 years) on soil quality in Biru County of Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, China. The fencing enclosure significantly increased soil water content, non-capillary porosity, soil organic matter, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and alkali-hydrolyzable nitrogen, and significantly decreased the soil bulk density. The soil quality gradually improved as the fencing enclosure time length increased, probably due to the increase of vegetation coverage and biomass under the fencing enclosure. The minimum data set was composed of soil organic matter, capillary porosity, total potassium, and non-capillary porosity. The minimum data set was significantly correlated with the total data set and could replace the total data set for soil quality evaluation in the fencing enclosure project area. In summary, our study reflects that fencing enclosures significantly improve soil quality, and the implementation of the fencing enclosure project will effectively curb land degradation in Biru County of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, China. Grassland reconstruction is a major approach to alleviate the 'black beach' in Sanjiangyuan of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. It is vital to understand how to manage the planting grassland after reconstruction. And which artificial grassland management pattern is more likely to restore the degraded grassland of 'black beach?' To provide the scientific basis for the restoration of 'black beach', we investigated the changes in vegetation characteristics, soil physicochemical properties and soil microbial community structure of planting grassland under different management patterns, and explored the effect of the management patterns on community succession of planting grassland. In this study, vegetation characteristics and soil physicochemical properties were measured by field investigation and laboratory analyses, respectively. Soil microbial community composition was determined by high-throughput sequencing techniques. The results showed that there were significant differences in vegetation characteristics, soil physicochemical properties and soil microbial community structure of the planting grassland under different management patterns. Actinobacteria and Basidiomycota were mainly controlled by vegetation plant species diversity, aboveground biomass (AGB) and soil organic carbon (SOC). Shannon-Wiener index, AGB and SOC peaked and the relative abundance of amplicon sequence variants annotated by Actinobacteria and Basidiomycota were significantly enriched under the management pattern of the planting once treatment. Additionally, the soil had the highest bacterial diversity and the lowest fungal diversity under the planting once treatment, becoming a 'bacterial' soil. These vegetation characteristics and soil environment were more conducive to overall positive community succession, indicating that the planting once treatment is the most reasonable management pattern for restoring the 'black beach'. Aims Grassland degradation represents a major challenge in the maintenance of grassland productivity. This process has dramatic impacts on energy flows and soil nutrient dynamics, thus directly or indirectly influencing soil microbes. Here, we aim to (i) examine changes in soil microbial composition, diversity and functionality in response to different levels of grassland degradation (i.e. non-degraded, moderately and severely degraded) in a temperate grassland in Inner Mongolia, and (ii) elucidate biotic and abiotic factors that are responsible for these changes. Methods The composition structure of soil microbial community was determined by high-throughput sequencing. The functionality of bacterial communities was examined using the tool of FAPROTAX, and functional guilds of fungal communities were quantified using the FUNGuild pipeline. Important Findings Grassland degradation significantly decreased soil bacterial diversity but it did not affect fungal diversity. Belowground biomass, soil organic carbon and total nitrogen were positively related to changes in diversity of bacterial community. Grassland degradation significantly increased the relative abundance of Chloroflexi (from 2.48% to 8.40%) and decreased Firmicutes (from 3.62% to 1.08%) of bacterial community. Degradation also significantly increased the relative abundance of Glomeromycota (from 0.17% to 1.53%) and decreased Basidiomycota (from 19.30% to 4.83%) of fungal community. The relative abundance of pathogenic fungi (Didymella and Fusarium) was decreased significantly by degradation. In addition, degradation had a significant impact on putative functionality of soil bacteria related to soil carbon and nitrogen cycling. Our results suggest that soil bacterial community is more sensitive than fungal community in response to degradation in the temperate grassland. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
