Abstract

Persistent electrical polarized states are fundamentally important to the electric industry as they can be used in the non-volatile memory, the artificial neuromorphic network, and negative capacitors, making ultralow energy consumption electronic devises possible. With the recent development in low dimensional ferroelectric materials, emerging 2D out-of-plane ferroelectric materials like MoTe2 have great potential for future development. Despite previous phenomenological studies, the underlying microscopic origin of ferroelectricity is still missing. Here, using density functional theory and Wannier function methods, we reveal that the origin of ferroelectricity of these transition metal dichalcogenides comes from the Jahn taller effect and followed by a covalent bonding between transition metal atoms. Moreover, the atypical electronic behavior of these monolayer AB2 (A=Cr, Mo, W; B=S, Se, Te) TMDs compare to traditional improper ferroelectrics hints a strong electronic origin of the polarization, suitable for future industrial applications., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

3. Superconducting phase diagram and nontrivial band topology of structurally modulated Sn$_{1-x}$Sb$_{x}$

Abstract

We report the discovery of superconductivity in binary alloy Sn$_{1-x}$Sb$_{x}$ with $x$ in the range of 0.43 to 0.6, which possesses a modulated rhombohedral structure due to the incommensurate ordering of Sn and Sb layers along the $c$-axis. The specific heat measurements indicate a weakly coupled, fully gapped superconducting state in this homogeneity range with a maximum bulk $T_{\rm c}$ of 1.58 K at $x$ = 0.46, though the electronic specific heat and Hall coefficients remain nearly $x$-independent. The nonmonotonic dependence of the bulk $T_{\rm c}$ is discussed in relation to the effects of Sb-layer intercalation between the [Sn$_{4}$Sb$_{3}$] seven-layer lamellae that are the essential building block for superconductivity. On the other hand, a zero-resistivity transition is found to take place well above the bulk superconducting transition, and the corresponding $T_{\rm c}$ increases monotonically with $x$ from 2.06 K to 3.29 K. This contrast, together with the uniform elements distribution revealed by energy dispersive x-ray mapping, implies that the resistive transition is due to the strain effect at the grain boundary rather than the compositional inhomogeneity. The first-principles calculations on the representative composition Sn$_{4}$Sb$_{3}$ ($x$ = 0.43) indicate that it is topologically nontrivial similar to Sb, but with different Z$_{2}$ invariants (0;111). Our results not only identify a new superconducting region in the Sn-Sb phase diagram, but also provide a viable platform to study the interplay between structural modulation, nontrivial band topology and superconductivity., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

Ferroelectricity is usually found in compound materials composed by different elements. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we reveal the first example of spontaneous electrical polarization and ferroelectricity in stable two-dimensional elemental materials: elemental Group-V (As, Sb, and Bi) monolayers. The polarization is due to the spontaneous lattice distortion with atomic layer buckling. Interestingly, for Bi monolayer, apart from the ferroelectric phase, we find that it can also host an antiferroelectric phase. The Curie temperatures of these elemental materials can be higher than room temperature, making them promising for realizing ultrathin ferroelectric devices of broad interest., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

BackgroundShanghai Soft X-ray Free-electron Laser (SXFEL) is upgrading and requires to operate in double-bunch mode instead of original mode to transport uniform energy along the bunch chain.PurposeThis study aims to satisfy the requirement of double-bunch mode by designing and implementing low level radio frequency (LLRF) system to flatten the output of RF pulse compressor through amplitude modulation.MethodsBased on double PI-control loops, the LLRF control system was designed and implemented with one PI-feedback loop for keeping the long-term stability of amplitude and phase, and the additional operating-outside-LLRF PI-feedback loop for flattening the output pulse shape. Furthermore, an experimental setup, including the compressor, was built for the verification of the above method.ResultsThe 2-h continuous test results show that the double PI-control loops can flatten and keep the compressor output, and maintain the long-term stability of amplitude and phase within 0.09% and 0.1° (Root Mean Square, RMS) respectively. In addition, the algorithm can restore the flat-top output automatically when a large manual frequency offset occurs.ConclusionsThe double PI-control loop applied to the LLRF system preserves satisfactory static and dynamic behaviors, meeting the requirement of the SXFEL upgrade.

Abstract

BackgroundThe linear accelerator of Shanghai soft X-ray free-electron laser facility (SXFEL) operates at 5 712 MHz frequency. In the low level radio frequency (LLRF) system, C band microwave signals were down converted from the 5 686.556 MHz local oscillator (LO) signal to 26.444 MHz intermediate (IM) signal, and then quadruple frequency sampled by the 105.778 MHz clock signal. The stability of LO signal and clock signal can make great influence on the performance of the LLRF system.PurposeThis study aims to design and manufacture a local oscillator and clock device for satisfying the theoretical design requirements of the LLRF in SXFEL.MethodThe LO signal and clock signal were designed to be auto-correlated with the master oscillator signal. All the functional discrete device modules were installed in a shielded aluminum alloy shell, and were matched and interconnected by RF connectors after debugging and testing separately. The phase jitter integral of clock signal and LO signal, as well as the possible temperature sensitive nonlinear modules, i.e., temperature control of frequency divider and frequency multiplier, in clock Lo equipment were experimentally tested.ResultsThe experimental results show that the additional phase jitter integral of LO signal is 21.43 fs, better than the requirement of 40 fs.ConclusionsThe performance of this manufactured LO and clock device can meet the theoretical requirement of the SXFEL.

Abstract

A Soft X-ray Free Electron Laser Test Facility (SXFEL-TF) based on normal conducting linear accelerator was constructed at the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF) campus by a joint team of Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics and Tsinghua University. It consists of multiple Radio Frequency (RF) stations with standing wave cavity (RF Gun) and traveling wave accelerating structures working at different frequencies. Low Level Radio Frequency (LLRF) system is used to measure the RF field in the cavities or structures and correct the fluctuation in RF fields with pulse-to-pulse feedback controllers. This paper describes the hardware and architecture of the LLRF system for electromagnetic filed stabilization inside the radio frequency electron gun, in the SXFEL-TF. A complete control path has be presented, including RF front-end board, I/Q detector and feedback controller. Algorithms used to stabilize the RF field have been presented as well as the software environment used to provide remote access to the control device. Abstract

Shanghai Soft X-ray FEL facility is under commissioning now, which linac is compased of one S-band injector, C-band main linac and X-band linearizer. In SXFEL S-band injector could provide 200MeV beam energy based on 4 RF power unit, and then 6 C-band RF units boost beam energy to 840MeV based on 33MV/m at least, which will be ramped to 40MV/m in the ungrading. In the middle of S-band and C-band RF system, a X-band RF unit is used as linearizer to make energy spread of electron beam linear distribution, which is important for bunch compressor and FEL radiation. Abstract

Shanghai Soft X-Ray Free Electron Laser (SXFEL) adopts C-band structure to accelerate the electron to 1.5-GeV. Due to high gradient operation, the electric breakdown and structure conditioning problems need to be perfectly resolved. For this purpose, we develop an automatic conditioning control and electric breakdown data acquisition system. The control based on a PXI Express (PXIe) embedded frame and the LabView-FPGA technique. Abstract

New ferroelectric materials with satisfactory performance at the nanoscale are critical for the ever-developing microelectronics industry. Here, we report two-dimensional (2D) ferroelectricity in elemental tellurium multilayers, which exhibit spontaneous in-plane polarization due to the interlayer interaction between lone pairs. The magnitude of the polarization reaches about 1.02 × 10−10C m−1per layer, which can be detected by current experimental technology as recently done for the 2D FE compound SnTe. The spontaneous ferroelectric polarization can be preserved for the bilayer Te film even above room temperature. Also, we show that due to the strong spin–orbit coupling of Te, there appear nontrivial valley-dependent spin-textures for the hole carriers, and the textures are coupled with the direction of FE polarization, which is tunable by an external electric field. Our findings not only introduce the concept of ferroelectricity in elemental systems, but also broaden the family of the 2D ferroelectric materials and offer a promising platform for novel electronic and spintronic applications.

Due to the fact the conventional fracturing technology cannot fracture the long horizontal section in open-hole completed horizontal well, which severely restricts the large-scale development of unconventional oil and gas, research was carried out on fracturing technology by ball dropping sliding sleeve outside the casing. A series of tools like K342-142 fracturing packer, PS70-140 pressure difference sliding sleeve, BS70-140 ball dropping sliding sleeve and QZ-130 setting ball seat were developed, and a multi-stage fracturing technical string applicable to He'nan Oilfield was generated, which is suitable for tight sandstone fracturing and satisfies the need for rapid development of unconventional resources. Abstract

Ferroelectrics allow for a wide range of intriguing applications. However, maintaining ferroelectricity has been hampered by intrinsic depolarization effects. Here, by combining first-principles calculations and experimental studies, we report on the discovery of robust room-temperature out-of-plane ferroelectricity which is realized in the thinnest monolayer MoTe2 with unexploited distorted 1T (d1T) phase. The origin of the ferroelectricity in d1T-MoTe2 results from the spontaneous symmetry breaking due to the relative atomic displacements of Mo atoms and Te atoms. Furthermore, a large ON/OFF resistance ratio is achieved in ferroelectric devices composed of MoTe2-based van der Waals heterostructure. Our work demonstrates that ferroelectricity can exist in two-dimensional layered material down to the atomic monolayer limit, which can result in new functionalities and achieve unexpected applications in atomic-scale electronic devices. It is difficult to maintain ferroelectricity in the two dimensional limit.
