A business ecosystem is a community of multiple co-evolving actors with interdependent product offerings organized around a specific value proposition. While the extant literature focuses on these two structural elements of ecosystems that existed ex ante, we challenge this notion with our core discovery that ecosystem actors emerge in an ex post dynamic process. With a longitudinal qualitative study of the vertically disintegrated part of the Chinese mobile phone industry, we develop a two-dimensional process model of ecosystem emergence, namely the temporal dimension that delineates three processal stages of ecosystem emergence and the spatial dimension that highlights an architectural pattern of reciprocities between value chain and resource pool to enable the ecosystem emergence. We also offer inter-temporal enabling conditions during ecosystem evolution. These findings enable us to complement the ecosystem literature by elaborating the antecedents, outcomes, and enabling conditions of ecosystem emergence in relation to multiple types of ecosystem actors. We also shed light on the value chain (re-)configuring process which derives from the reciprocity between value chains and ecosystem resources.

The concept of entrepreneurial ecosystems has been gaining considerable attention during the past decade among practitioners, policymakers, and researchers. However, to date, entrepreneurial ecosystem research has been largely atheoretical and static, and it focused mostly on advanced economies. In this paper, we therefore do two things. We first systematically review entrepreneurial ecosystem literature and propose a conceptual model that explicates three entrepreneurial ecosystem dynamics based on resource, interaction, and governance logics, respectively. We then systematically review empirical studies of emerging economy entrepreneurial ecosystems to build a theoretical framework that highlights their salient features. We reveal three key findings that challenge the direct application of the model vis-a-vis advanced economy entrepreneurial ecosystems to emerging economy entrepreneurial ecosystems: resource scarcities, structural gaps, and institutional voids. Our findings contribute to entrepreneurial ecosystem literature in terms of ecosystem dynamics and contextualizing entrepreneurial ecosystems in emerging economies. We also provide policy implications for emerging countries in fostering new venture creation.

As a kind of traditional heating and power equipment, the industrial boiler is more and more applied in industrial production and life. However, due to the uneven heating of the boiler, the process of using the boiler would result in boiler leakage accidents and cause burns to workers. Given the above situation, the intelligent control system of the industrial boiler is studied in this paper to achieve safe and stable operation of the boiler. This design uses the distributed thermocouple temperature measurement method to design the boiler safety warning system based on the thermocouple sensor collaborative monitoring. Multiple sensors are used to cooperatively monitor and collect boiler operating signals. COMSOL model is used to realize 3D temperature field simulation and reconstruction inside the furnace lining, and the results are presented as early warning results through LabVIEW upper computer interface, which solves the shortcomings of low acquisition accuracy, narrow measurement accuracy, and single measurement method of the traditional contact measurement method. The practice shows that the system has the advantages of low cost, convenient installation and maintenance, easy expansion, high reliability, and strong anti-interference.

The traditional A star obstacle avoidance algorithm is based on binocular cameras for indoor positioning, which requires rich obstacle feature points and has the risk of explosion in a single indoor environment. In this paper, the method of merging the A star algorithm and optical dynamic capture is proposed. By pasting Marker points on key moving parts, the actual position of the aerial robot is calculated with the optical dynamic capture system, and compared with the target position planned by the A star algorithm and corrected in real time during a flight. Through the experimental analysis of the original acceleration of the aerial robot and different position between the target point and the actual point in the flight process, the stability and flight accuracy of the aerial robot in the flight process can be significantly improved, which has good practical application value.

While entrepreneurial ecosystems (EEs) are often regarded as spatially bounded resource allocation systems that allocate and mobilise resources for new venture creation, less is known on the underlying process of resource allocation that sustains the development and prosperity of entrepreneurial ecosystems. Following an inductive approach, we conducted a qualitative study on Shenzhen's entrepreneurial ecosystem. Our findings show that the process of resource allocation in an entrepreneurial ecosystem unfolds in four interconnected themes - resource endowments, resource use, resource dynamics and enabling conditions of resource dynamics. Based on these dimensions, we offer an integrated process model revealing how an entrepreneurial ecosystem mobilises and allocates resources over time. Complementing the “resource-provision” account in extant literature that illuminates the optimal “recipes” of ecosystem resources as sources of competitiveness, we offer a “resource-dynamic” account, which addresses how effective resource allocation, mobilisation and circulation within and outside of the ecosystems may be alternative sources of sustained growth for entrepreneurial ecosystems. We also contribute to the regional entrepreneurship literature by shedding light on the feedback impacts of new venture creation activities on regional resources. Our findings offer implications for governments and entrepreneurs in guiding policy initiatives towards, and measuring the long-term health of, regional entrepreneurial ecosystems.

Iron-nickel supported on modified active carbon (Fe-Ni/MAC) was prepared and characterized by XRD, SEM, XPS and EDS, followed by evaluating the practicability of Fe-Ni/MAC in treating real wastewater with a high concentration of phenol. Results showed that the optimal conditions for catalytic ozonation obtained by response surface methodology (RSM) were catalyst 10 g/L, ozone 68 mg/L, pH 9 and reaction time 90 min. Fe-Ni alloy and NiFe2O4 were demonstrated to be the dominant active species involved in catalytic reaction. The Fe-Ni/MAC catalyst can be reused six times with a satisfactory performance and little leaching of metal ions. Although some radicals like &middot, OH and &middot, O2&minus, functioned well, singlet oxygen (1O2) was regarded as the most important radical in the Fe-Ni/MAC process. Most noticeably, the fluorescence excitation emission matrices (EEMs) certified that as much as 1243 mg/L phenol in the real wastewater was completely degraded, which made Fe-Ni/MAC a fairly practical catalyst.

This paper explores the determinants of network effects of the two-sided online games market. We have used the Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPG) industry as the empirical context to explore these network effect determinants. With an inductive, qualitative case study on the MMORPG ecosystem, we have developed an integrated framework combining network structural characteristics (strong tie communication and weak tie creation) and network functioning characteristics (value-informed pricing and accessory diversification), which are the key determinants of network effects. Furthermore, business ecosystem characteristics, such as internal and external resource support, will moderate and strengthen such relationships. This article not only contributes to the determinants of network effect theories, but also has implications for the practitioners in the MMORPG industry.

The hole series parts is widely used in the aerospace, automotive electronics, instrumentation, and hydraulic components. There are many of holes with the same machining parameter in this kind of parts, the consistency evaluation of these hole surface quality is one of the most important considerations. Based on wavelet packet energy spectrum, higher-order statistics, radar chart, and fuzzy c-means (FCM) algorithm, a method is presented to evaluate hole surface quality quickly and effectively. Vibration signal is used as the main source of information about the drilling process. In this paper, wavelet packet energy spectrum (WPES) and higher-order statistics, which can image the information on both time and frequency domain, are applied as preparatory work for cluster analysis. Then, a ten-dimensional feature vector for cluster analysis is constructed from the value of higher-order statistics and wavelet packet energy ratio of the frequency bands where the energy is abnormal. Finally, cluster analysis based on radar chart and FCM algorithm is conducted on the feature vector for classification. By comparison, it is found that the cluster analysis result is basically consistent with the artificial test result. The proposed method can be further extended to the quality evaluation of other machining processes.

We investigated the associations between SLC11A1 polymorphisms and susceptibility to tuberculosis (TB) in Chinese Holstein cattle, using a case-control study of 136 animals that had positive reactions to TB tests and showed symptoms and 96 animals that had negative reactions to tests and showed no symptoms. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) sequencing and the restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) technique were used to detect and determine SLC11A1 polymorphisms. Association analysis identified significant correlations between SLC11A1 polymorphisms and susceptibility/resistance to TB, and two genetic markers for SLC11A1 were established using PCR-RFLP. Sequence alignment of SLC11A1 revealed seven single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). This is the first report of MaeII PCR-RFLP markers for the SLC11A1-SNP3 site and PstI PCR-RFLP markers for the SLC11A1-SNP5 and SLC11A1-SNP6 sites in Chinese Holstein cattle. Logistic regression analysis indicated that SLC11A1-SNP1, SLC11A1-SNP3, and SLC11A1-SNP5 were significantly associated with susceptibility/resistance to TB. Two genotypes of SLC11A1-SNP3 were susceptible to TB, whereas one genotype of SLC11A1-SNP1 and two genotypes of SLC11A1-SNP5 were resistant. Haplotype analysis showed that nine haplotypes were potentially resistant to TB. After Bonferroni correction, three of the haplotypes remained significantly associated with TB resistance. SLC11A1 is a useful candidate gene related to TB in Chinese Holstein cattle.

BACKGROUND This study aimed to explore the transcript preference of PTK7 in adrenocortical cancer (ACC), the prognostic value, and the potential underlying genetic alterations. MATERIAL AND METHODS Data from the Cancer Genome Atlas-Adrenocortical Cancer (TCGA-ACC) and the Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx)-normal adrenal gland were used for analysis. RESULTS A non-canonical alternative transcript, ENST00000489707.5, which only encodes an extracellular immunoglobulin (Ig)-like domain and an intracellular kinase domain, is the dominant isoform of PTK7 in both ACC and normal adrenal gland. Its expression percentage was significantly higher in ACC than in normal adrenal gland. ACC tissues showed preferred expression of this transcript compared with other cancers with known PTK7 expression. Prognostic analysis showed that ENST00000489707.5 had independent prognostic value in progression-free survival (PFS) (HR: 1.227, 95%CI: 1.077-1.398, p=0.002) and disease-specific survival (DSS) (HR: 1.419, 95%CI: 1.154-1.745, p=0.001) after adjustment of other risk factors. cg20819617 methylation was negatively correlated with both PTK7 and ENST00000489707.5 expression. CONCLUSIONS ENST00000489707.5 is a preferred alternative splicing product of PTK7, with a significantly increased proportion in ACC compared with other cancers. Its expression shows potential prognostic value in terms of PFS and DSS in ACC patients. The methylation status of cg20819617 might play a critical role in modulating PTK7 transcription and ENST00000489707.5 expression.

This study was performed to investigate the role of PTK7 in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) stem-like cells (CSCs). PTK7 expression in ESCCs identified by RT-qPCR, and CSC-like cells were isolated from populations of NEC and TE-1 cells. The CSC-like cells were verified by flow cytometric analyses performed using CD34 and CD133 antibodies, and RT-qPCR and western blot assays were used to examine the self-renewal capability of CSC-like cells. CSC-like cells treated with PTK7 siRNA or a P53-specific inhibitor (PFTα) were analyzed for their sphere formation capacity and their apoptosis and migration/invasion capabilities by sphere formation, flow cytometry, and transwell assay, respectively. Their levels of P53, MKK3, and cleaved caspase 3 expression were examined by western blot analysis. Our results revealed that a majority of the isolated CSC-like cells were CD34+/CD133+ double positive cells. Nango, Sox2, and OCT4 were dramatically increased in the separated CSC-like cells, which had the pluripotency and self-renewal properties of stem cells. Additional, PTK7 was dramatically upregulated in the ESCC tissues and CSC-like cells. An investigation of the function of CSC-like cells revealed that knockdown of PTK7 reduced their sphere formation, promoted apoptosis, and suppressed their migration and invasion abilities, all of which could be significantly reversed by PFTα. Mechanistic studies showed that PFTα could attenuate the upregulation of P53, MKK3, and cleaved caspase 3 expression that was induced by PTK7 knockdown in CSC-like cells. PTK7 increased the malignant behaviors of CSC-like cells derived from ESCC cells by regulating p53. Therefore, this study suggests PTK7 as an underlying target for therapy against ESCC.

This paper conceptualises entrepreneurial ecosystems (EE) by addressing their definition, configurations and health. We define EE dynamically and highlight the interactions between value creation and location. We explore patterns of EE by two dimensions: driving forces varying by locations and value creation types. We also propose three dimensions that characterise EE health: basic functions, resilience and adaptation. Our theorizing contributes to entrepreneurship literatures by linking how entrepreneurs access resources to EE, and business ecosystem literatures by connecting location with value creation.

A passive temperature-sensing antenna is presented in this paper, which consists of a meandering dipole, a bimetal strip and a back cavity. The meandering dipole is divided into two parts: the lower feeding part and the upper radiating part, which maintain electric contact during operation. As a sensing component, a bimetal strip coil offers a twisting force to rotate the lower feeding part of the antenna when the temperature varies. As a result, the effective length of the dipole antenna changes, leading to a shift of the resonant frequency. Furthermore, a metal back cavity is added to increase the antenna’s quality factor Q, which results in a high-sensitivity design. An antenna prototype is designed, fabricated, and measured, which achieves a sensitivity larger than 4.00 MHz/°C in a temperature range from 30 °C to 50 °C and a read range longer than 4 m. Good agreement between the simulation and measurement results is obtained.

Summary Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3) has an important protective function against viral infection. The ability of an individual to respond properly to TLR ligands may be impaired by variants located in the TLR genes. By directly PCR sequencing four exons and their flanking sequence of chicken TLR3, a total of 50 nucleotide variants were identified from five breeds. Tibetan chickens and Silkies exhibited more abundant variation sites and rare alleles. Thirty haplotypes were reconstructed, with 31 variants whose minor allelic frequency was above 5% in five breeds, which revealed four divergent clades. Chicken TLR3 was partitioned into three haplotype blocks by the htSNPer program, and six tag SNPs could be used to distinguish these 30 haplotypes. Thirty variants were located in the coding sequence of chicken TLR3, and 16 of them were non-synonymous substitutions. It is predicted that p.Ser180Gly amino substitution could form an N-myristoylation site; the p.Lys240Thr amino substitution in chicken TLR3 could result in the loss of one protein kinase C phosphorylation site. These data provide a basic understanding of chicken TLR3 sequence variation and provide haplotypic markers for disease association studies.

The objective of this study was to identify genetic markers and genomic regions associated with susceptibility to Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis (MAP) infection in Holstein cattle. Associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified by genotyping 521 MAP-infected Holstein cows and comparing SNP allele frequencies of these infected cows with allele frequencies estimated from specific reference populations. Reference population allele frequency estimates used Holstein sire genotype data and were weighted estimates based on sire usage within the population in question. The 521 infected cows were 233 and 288 cows from two resource populations of approximately 5000 cows each, collected independently. Population 1 was comprised primarily of daughters of twelve Holstein artificial insemination sires used heavily within the US dairy cattle population. Samples were obtained from 300 co-operating commercial dairy herds throughout the US and were tested by both MAP faecal culture and blood-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Population 2 consisted of dairy cattle from six co-operating dairy herds in Wisconsin, with all animals in the herds tested by blood enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for MAP infection. Genotyping was performed with the Illumina Bovine SNP50 Bead Chip, providing genotypes for 35,772 informative SNPs. Twinning in cattle is a complex trait that is associated with economic loss and health issues such as abortion, dystocia, and reduced calf survival. Twinning-rate QTL have been detected previously on BTA5 in the North American Holstein and Norwegian dairy cattle populations and in a USDA herd selected for high twinning rate. In previous work with the North American Holstein population, the strongest evidence for a QTL was obtained from analysis of an extended, multiple-generation family. Using additional animals, an increased density of SNP marker association tests, and a combined linkage and linkage disequilibrium mapping method, we refined the position of this QTL in the North American Holstein population. Two sets of twinning-rate predicted transmitting abilities estimated during 2 different time periods in the North American dairy cattle population were used to provide validation of results. A total of 106 SNP and 3 microsatellites were used to scan the genomic region between 5 and 80 Mb on BTA5. Combined linkage-linkage disequilibrium analysis identified significant evidence for QTL within the 25- to 35-Mb and 64- to 70-Mb regions of BTA5. The IGF-1 gene (IGF1) was examined as a positional candidate gene and an SNP in intron 2 of IGF1 was significantly associated with twinning rate by using both data sets (P = 0.003 and P = 1.05 x 10 -6 ). Replication of this association in other cattle populations will be required to examine the extent of linkage disequilibrium with the underlying quantitative trait nucleotide across breeds.

Bovine tuberculosis (BTB) is a significant veterinary and financial problem in many parts of the world. Associations between specific host genes and susceptibility to mycobacterial infections, such as tuberculosis, have been reported in several species. The objective of this study was to identify and evaluate the relationship of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the CARD15 gene with susceptibility to BTB in Chinese Holstein cows. DNA samples from 201 Chinese Holstein cows (103 cases and 98 controls) were collected from Kunming City, Yuxi City, and Dali City in China. SNPs in the CARD15 gene were assessed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and restriction fragment length polymorphism-polymerase chain reaction (RFLP-PCR). Case-control association testing and statistical analysis identified six SNPs associated with susceptibility to BTB in Chinese Holstein cows. The frequency of genotypes C/T, A/G, A/G, A/G, C/T, and A/G in E4 (-37), 208, 1644, 1648, 1799, and E10 (+107), respectively, was significantly higher in cases than in controls, and also the alleles C, A, A, G, T, and A, respectively, were associated with a greater relative risk in cases than in controls. The distribution of two haplotypes, TGGACA and CAGACA, was significantly different between cases and controls. Overall, this case-control study suggested that E4 (-37)(C/T), 208(A/G), 1644(A/G), 1648(A/G), 1799(C/T), and E10 (+107)(A/G) in the CARD15 gene were significantly associated with susceptibility to BTB in Chinese Holstein cows and that haplotypes TGGACA and CAGACA could be used as genetic markers in marker-assisted breeding programs for breeding cows with high resistance to BTB.

A comparative study of human chromosome 17 (HSA17) and pig chromosome 12 (SSC12) was conducted using both somatic cell hybrid panel (SCHP) and radiation hybrid (RH) panel analysis. Sequences from an expressed sequence tag (EST) project in pig reproduction were examined and six genes and ESTs originally believed to map to HSA17 were selected for this study. The genes/ESTs were TATA box binding protein-associated factor (TAF2N/RBP56), alpha-2-plasmin inhibitor (SERPINF2/PLI), H3 histone family 3B (H3F3B), aminopeptidase puromycin sensitive (NPEPPS), an expressed sequence tag (ESTMI015) and P311 protein (P311). The SCHP analysis mapped five genes/ESTs (TAF2N, H3F3B, SERPINF2, NPEPPS and ESTMI015) to SSC12q11-q15 and SSC12p11-p15 with 100% concordance, and assigned P311 to SSC2 (1/2q24)-q29 with 100% concordance. Radiation hybrid analysis of all six genes confirmed the SCHP mapping results, with average retention frequency of 25%. Recent human sequence data demonstrated that P311 is actually located on HSA5q. As HSA5q and SSC2q show conserved syntenic regions predicted from bi-directional painting, our P311 mapping data is consistent with these results. An expanded comparative SSC12 RH map integrating the five new type I markers and 23 previously mapped loci was established using a LOD score threshold of 4.8. The gene order of the five genes/ESTs on the SSC12 framework RH map (H3F3B-ESTMI015-NPEPPS-TAF2N-SERPINF2) is identical to the HSA17 GB4 map but with inversion of the map as conventionally drawn.

BACKGROUND: The domestic pig currently indigenous to the Tibetan highlands is supposed to have been introduced during a continuous period of colonization by the ancestors of modern Tibetans. However, there is no direct genetic evidence of either the local origin or exotic migration of the Tibetan pig. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We analyzed mtDNA hypervariable segment I (HVI) variation of 218 individuals from seven Tibetan pig populations and 1,737 reported mtDNA sequences from domestic pigs and wild boars across Asia. The Bayesian consensus tree revealed a main haplogroup M and twelve minor haplogroups, which suggested a large number of small scale in situ domestication episodes. In particular, haplogroups D1 and D6 represented two highly divergent lineages in the Tibetan highlands and Island Southeastern Asia, respectively. Network analysis of haplogroup M further revealed one main subhaplogroup M1 and two minor subhaplogroups M2 and M3. Intriguingly, M2 was mainly distributed in Southeastern Asia, suggesting for a local origin. Similar with haplogroup D6, M3 was mainly restricted in Island Southeastern Asia. This pattern suggested that Island Southeastern Asia, but not Southeastern Asia, might be the center of domestication of the so-called Pacific clade (M3 and D6 here) described in previous studies. Diversity gradient analysis of major subhaplogroup M1 suggested three local origins in Southeastern Asia, the middle and downstream regions of the Yangtze River, and the Tibetan highlands, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: We identified two new origin centers for domestic pigs in the Tibetan highlands and in the Island Southeastern Asian region.

A previous genome-wide search with a moderate density 10K marker set identified many marker associations with twinning rate, either through single-marker analysis or combined linkage-linkage disequilibrium (LLD; haplotype) analysis. The objective of the current study was to validate putative marker associations using an independent set of phenotypic data. Holstein bulls (n = 921) from 100 paternal half-sib families were genotyped. Twinning rate predicted transmitting abilities were calculated using calving records from 1994 to 1998 (Data I) and 1999 to 2006 (Data II), and the underlying liability scores from threshold model analysis were used as the trait in marker association analyses. The previous analysis used 201 bulls with daughter records in Data I. In the current analysis, this was increased to 434, providing a revised estimate of effect and significance. Bulls with daughter records in Data II totaled 851, and analysis of this data provided the validation of results from analysis of Data I. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were selected to validate previously significant single-marker associations and LLD results. Bulls were genotyped for a total of 306 markers. Nine of 13 LLD regions located on chromosomes 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 22, 23(2) and 26 were validated, showing significant results for both Data I and II. Association analysis revealed 55 of 174 markers validated, equating to a single-marker validation rate of 31%. Stepwise backward elimination and cross-validation analyses identified 18 SNPs for use in a final reduced marker panel explaining 34% of the genetic variation, and to allow prediction of genetic merit for twinning rate.
