A novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, has spread widely throughout the world. To reduce the spread of infection, children are prevented from going to school and have fewer opportunities for in-person communication. Such changes in the everyday lives of children might influence their socio-emotional behaviors; however, the whole picture of the possible impact was not well known. This study examined socio-emotional behaviors of Japanese children (aged 4-9) during the pandemic and compared the data to the data before the pandemic. Children's socio-emotional behaviors in an everyday context was assessed using the parent-reported Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. The results indicated that during the pandemic, children were more prosocial and experienced more problems in their peer relationships, but no differences were found in emotional symptoms, conduct problems, hyperactivity between before and during the pandemic. The findings suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic has mixed impacts on children's socio-emotional behaviors, implying that this topic should be considered in broader and fuller perspectives.

Abstract Objective Having a positive reputation generally yields more social benefits than a negative one. While individuals typically strive for a good reputation, their concern for it varies. This pre-registered study investigates how reputation concerns influence others’ social evaluations of a protagonist, particularly in the context of leadership. In this study, participants (N = 363) read profiles of individuals exhibiting either high or low concern for their reputation and rated their suitability for leadership in both competitive and cooperative settings. Results Results indicated that in intergroup competitive situations, individuals with low reputation concerns were more likely to be endorsed as leaders compared to those with high reputation concerns (Leadership endorsement scores: M low = 4.00, M high = 3.23, p

Social learning is a fundamental mechanism for efficiently transferring and coordinating norms, skills, and sophisticated cultural information to individuals. However, the psychological mechanisms underlying social learning remain unclear. To investigate this, we recruited adult participants (N = 103), who observed a model's performance in a two-choice reward-searching task. Two cues were used to determine the reward, with both cues possessing an alternative signal that had a specific rule for finding the reward. Although the model succeeded with one cue but failed with another, both possessed equal information, which enabled the participants to find the reward. Participants were more likely to use the cue linked to the model's success than the model's failure when asked to solve the task by themselves. This "copy success" bias reflects the psychological process underlying social learning suggested by previous evolutionary theories and provides practical suggestions for efficient learning processes.

The surrounding rock of underground rock chamber is frequently affected by disturbance load and circulating temperature; it is meaningful to study the mechanical properties of surrounding rock under these conditions for the construction of a safe and effective underground chamber. This study investigates the mechanical properties, failure modes, and acoustic emission (AE) characteristics of basalt and sandstone under various pretreatments, including water saturation pretreatment (rock samples [SR]), rock samples subjected to cyclic temperature pretreatment (SR-CTT), rock samples subjected to cyclic loading pretreatment (SR-CLT), and rock samples subjected to combined cyclic loading and temperature pretreatment (SR-CTT-CLT). A series of uniaxial compression tests (UCTs) were conducted to analyze how these pretreatments affect the mechanical properties of basalt and sandstone. These two kinds of rock exhibit distinct failure modes, SR-CLT and SR-CTT-CLT make the failure of basalt change from inclined shear to X-shaped shear, while SR-CLT makes it turn into splitting. AE data reveal that basalt generally exhibits lower AE counts than sandstone, with the highest counts observed under SR-CTT-CLT. Energy analysis indicates that basalt accumulates more total energy (Et) and elastic energy (Ee) compared to sandstone, with different pretreatments affecting energy dissipation (Ed) and damage severity differently in each rock type. These findings contribute to understanding the complex interactions between pretreatment methods and rock behavior in engineering applications.

Aiming at the problem of cutting roof and retaining roadway on the right third working face of 16#, east second mining area of Jixian Coal Mine in Shuangyashan city, the mechanical model of surrounding rock of cutting roof and retaining roadway is established, and the theoretical calculation formula of key parameters such as cutting height and cutting angle is given; the influence of roof cutting parameters (roof cutting height and angle) on the stress distribution and deformation characteristics of the surrounding rock is further analyzed. The numerical simulation results show that the greater the roof cutting height is, the better the relief effect is; with the increase of the cutting angle, the side stress of solid coal shows an increasing trend, which also creates certain conditions for the caving of gangue. The similar simulation results show that when the coal seam is mined to a certain distance, the upper rock stratum in the goaf collapses at the same time, and the rock mass in the slit range and caving rock mass form a hinged joint, that is, the side filling of the roadway is basically completed, and the structure of “low cantilever beam + high hinged rock beam” is formed above the roadway. The engineering practice show that the cutting height is 8.0 m (2.39 m medium sandstone), the cutting angle is 10°, and the spacing of the drilling holes is 600 mm. When it is about 60 m away from the working face, the roof subsidence is 168 mm, the solid coal wall displacement is 212 mm, the deformation of the gangue wall is almost 0, and the bottom heave is 120 mm.

The treatment of digestive system tumors presents challenges, particularly in immunotherapy, owing to the advanced immune tolerance of the digestive system. Nanomaterials have emerged as a promising approach for addressing these challenges. They provide targeted drug delivery, enhanced permeability, high bioavailability, and low toxicity. Additionally, nanomaterials target immunosuppressive cells and reshape the tumor immune microenvironment (TIME). Among the various cells in the TIME, tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) are the most abundant and play a crucial role in tumor progression. Therefore, investigating the modulation of TAMs by nanomaterials for the treatment of digestive system tumors is of great significance. Here, we present a comprehensive review of the utilization of nanomaterials to modulate TAMs for the treatment of gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, and pancreatic cancer. We also investigated the underlying mechanisms by which nanomaterials modulate TAMs to treat tumors in the digestive system. Furthermore, this review summarizes the role of macrophage-derived nanomaterials in the treatment of digestive system tumors. Overall, this research offers valuable insights into the development of nanomaterials tailored for the treatment of digestive system tumors.

The juvenile-to-adult phase change with first flowering as the indicator plays a crucial role in the lifecycle of fruit trees. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying phase change in fruit trees remain largely unknown. Shikimic acid (ShA) pathway is a main metabolic pathway closely related to the synthesis of hormones and many important secondary metabolites participating in plant phase change. So, whether ShA regulates phase change in plants is worth clarifying. Here, the distinct morphological characteristics and the underlying mechanisms of phase change in jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.), an important fruit tree native to China with nutritious fruit and outstanding tolerance abiotic stresses, were clarified. A combined transcriptome and metabolome analysis found that ShA is positively involved in jujube (‘Yuhong’ × ‘Xing 16’) phase change. The genes in the upstream of ShA synthesis pathway (ZjDAHPS, ZjDHQS and ZjSDH), the contents of ShA and the downstream secondary metabolites like phenols were significantly upregulated in the phase change period. Further, the treatment of spraying exogenous ShA verified that ShA at a very low concentration (60 mg · L−1) can substantially speed up the phase change and flowering of jujube and other tested plants including Arabidopsis, tomato and wheat. The exogenous ShA (60 mg · L−1) treatment in jujube seedlings could increase the accumulation of endogenous ShA, enhance leaf photosynthesis and the synthesis of phenols especially flavonoids and phenolic acids, and promote the expression of genes (ZjCOs, ZjNFYs and ZjPHYs) involved in flowering pathway. Basing on above results, we put forward a propose for the underlying mechanism of ShA regulating phase change, and a hypothesis that ShA could be considered a phytohormone-like substance because it is endogenous, ubiquitous, movable and highly efficient at very low concentrations. This study highlights the critical role of ShA in plant phase change and its phytohormone-like properties.

GaN, a third-generation semiconductor, has gained widespread attention owing to its high temperature resistance, wide bandgap, and high critical breakdown electric fields. Magnetron sputtering has a broad potential in the field of low-cost growth of GaN on account of high efficiency, superior quality, and convenient operation. However, challenges caused from the pure Ga targets with a huge refrigeration system need to be resolved for wide practices. Here, a new and cost-effective Ga target for magnetron sputtering was fabricated by utilizing the wetting properties of CuGa2 and Ga. Mixed microcrystalline and amorphous GaN films were obtained via reactive magnetron sputtering employing the Ga target. The average deposition rate is about 1.68 nm/min, and the average roughness is ∼7.45 ± 0.26 nm under 100 W of sputtering power. In addition, the sputtered GaN films were found to be wide-bandgap and p-type semiconductors with high transmittance, as revealed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and absorption spectra. The GaN films display a bandgap of ∼3.60 eV and a transmittance exceeding 88.5% in the visible range. Furthermore, field-effect transistors and metal–semiconductor–metal photodetectors have been fabricated using the obtained GaN films, demonstrating favorable response characteristics. The prospects of microcrystalline/amorphous GaN films in sensing, power devices, and flexible electronics were forecasted. Overall, a low-cost and pervasive route of target fabrication process expands the possibilities of using low melting point metals in magnetron sputtering.

Belief in gendered social power imbalance (i.e. males are more powerful than females) leads to undesirable gender disparities, but little is known about the developmental origins of this belief, especially in Eastern cultures. We investigated the development onset of this belief by focusing on 4–7-year-old Japanese children while considering another belief (females are nicer than males) for comparison. In the dyadic context tasks, children saw pairs of animated characters depicting powerful–powerless or kind–unkind postures and judged the characters' gender (boy or girl). Results suggested both ‘nice = female’ and ‘powerful = female’ gender stereotypes in children. In the collective context tasks, children were presented with stories in occupational contexts, including multiple unspecified people and verbal cues, describing more explicitly the powerful and nice traits of the protagonists. The results replicated the ‘nice = female’ gender stereotype. Moreover, early ‘powerful = male’ gender stereotypes were seen in 6-year-old boys but not among girls in general. These findings demonstrate that Japanese children's beliefs regarding gender differences in power vary depending on the context in which male–female interactions are presented. Additionally, the study reveals that signs of the ‘powerful = male’ social power gender stereotype emerge around the age of 6.

Microwave thermotherapy (MWTT), as a treatment for tumors, lacks specificity and requires sensitizers. Most reported microwave sensitizers are single metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which must be loaded with ionic liquids to enhance the performance in MWTT. Meanwhile, MWTT is rarely combined with other treatment modalities. Here, we synthesized a novel Fe–Cu bimetallic organic framework FeCuMOF (FCM) by applying a hydrothermal method and further modified it with methyl polyethylene glycol (mPEG). The obtained FCM@PEG (FCMP) showed remarkable heating performance under low-power microwave irradiation; it also acted as a novel nanospheres enzyme to catalyze H2O2 decomposition, producing abundant reactive oxygen species (ROS) to deplete glutathione (GSH) and prevent ROS clearance from tumor cells during chemodynamic treatment. The FCMP was biodegradable and demonstrated excellent biocompatibility, allowing it to be readily metabolized without causing toxic effects. Finally, it was shown to act as a suitable agent for T2 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in vitro and in vivo. This new bimetallic nanostructure could successfully realize two tumor treatment modalities (MWTT and chemodynamic therapy) and dual imaging modes (T2 MRI and microwave thermal imaging). Our findings represent a breakthrough for integrating the diagnosis and treatment of tumors and provides a reference for developing new microwave sensitizers.

Abstract Backgrounds The novel concept of microwave dynamic therapy (MDT) solves the problem of incomplete tumor eradication caused by non-selective heating and uneven temperature distribution of microwave thermal therapy (MWTT) in clinic, but the poor delivery of microwave sensitizer and the obstacle of tumor hypoxic microenvironment limit the effectiveness of MDT. Results Herein, we engineer a liquid metal-based nanozyme LM@ZIF@HA (LZH) with eutectic Gallium Indium (EGaIn) as the core, which is coated with CoNi-bimetallic zeolite imidazole framework (ZIF) and hyaluronic acid (HA). The flexibility of the liquid metal and the targeting of HA enable the nanozyme to be effectively endocytosed by tumor cells, solving the problem of poor delivery of microwave sensitizers. Due to the catalase-like activity, the nanozyme catalyze excess H2O2 in the tumor microenvironment to generate O2, alleviating the restriction of the tumor hypoxic microenvironment and promoting the production of ROS under microwave irradiation. In vitro cell experiments, the nanozyme has remarkable targeting effect, oxygen production capacity, and microwave dynamic effect, which effectively solves the defects of MDT. In the constructed patient-derived xenograft (PDX) model, the nanozyme achieves excellent MDT effect, despite the heterogeneity and complexity of the tumor model that is similar to the histological and pathological features of the patient. The tumor volume in the LZH + MW group is only about 1/20 of that in the control group, and the tumor inhibition rate is as high as 95%. Conclusion The synthesized nanozyme effectively solves the defects of MDT, improves the targeted delivery of microwave sensitizers while regulating the hypoxic microenvironment of tumors, and achieves excellent MDT effect in the constructed PDX model, providing a new strategy for clinical cancer treatment.

Alkaline stress poses a significant challenge to the healthy growth of fish. Ginger polysaccharide (GP) is one of the main active substances in ginger and has pharmacological effects, such as anti-oxidation and immune regulation. However, the physiological regulatory mechanism of GP addition to diet on alkalinity stress in crucian carp remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the potential protective effects of dietary GP on antioxidant capacity, gene expression levels, intestinal microbiome, and metabolomics of crucian carp exposed to carbonate (NaHCO3). The CK group (no GP supplementation) and COG group (NaHCO3 stress and no GP supplementation) were set up. The GPCS group (NaHCO3 stress and 0.4% GP supplementation) was stressed for seven days. Based on these data, GP significantly increased the activities of total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX), acid phosphatase (ACP), and alkaline phosphatase (AKP) in carp under alkalinity stress (p < 0.05) and decreased the activity of malon dialdehyde (MDA) (p < 0.05). GP restored the activity of GSH-PX, ACP, and AKP to CK levels. The expression levels of tumor necrosis factor β (TGF-β), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), and interleukin 8 (IL-8) genes were decreased, and the expression levels of determination factor kappa-B (NF-κB) and interleukin 10 (IL-10) genes were increased (p < 0.05). Based on 16 S rRNA high-throughput sequencing, GP improved the changes in the intestinal microbial diversity and structural composition of crucian carp caused by NaHCO3 exposure. In particular, GP increased the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes and decreased the relative abundance of Actinobacteria. The metabolic response of GP to NaHCO3 exposed crucian carp guts was studied using LC/MS. Compared to the COG group, the GPCS group had 64 different metabolites and enriched 10 metabolic pathways, including lipid metabolism, nucleotide metabolism, and carbohydrate metabolism. The addition of GP to feed can promote galactose metabolism and provide an energy supply to crucian carp, thus alleviating the damage induced by alkalinity stress. In conclusion, GP can mitigate the effects of NaHCO3 alkalinity stress by regulating immune function, intestinal flora, and intestinal metabolism in crucian carp. These findings provide a novel idea for studying the mechanism of salt-alkali tolerance in crucian carp by adding GP to feed.

Abstract Nano-engineering with unique “custom function” capability has shown great potential in solving technical difficulties of nanomaterials in tumor treatment. Through tuning the size and surface properties controllablly, nanoparticles can be endoewd with tailored structure, and then the characteristic functions to improve the therapeutic effect of nanomedicines. Based on nano-engineering, many have been carried out to advance nano-engineering nanomedicine. In this review, the main research related to cancer therapy attached to the development of nanoengineering nanomedicines has been presented as follows. Firstly, therapeutic agents that target to tumor area can exert the therapeutic effect effectively. Secondly, drug resistance of tumor cells can be overcome to enhance the efficacy. Thirdly, remodeling the immunosuppressive microenvironment makes the therapeutic agents work with the autoimmune system to eliminate the primary tumor and then prevent tumor recurrence and metastasis. Finally, the development prospects of nano-engineering nanomedicine are also outlined.

Real-time and accurate temperature monitoring during microwave hyperthermia (MH) remains a critical challenge for ensuring treatment efficacy and patient safety. This study presents a novel approach to simulate real MH and precisely determine the temperature of the target region within biological tissues using a temporal-informed neural network. We conducted MH experiments on 30 sets of phantoms and 10 sets of ex vivo pork tissues. We proposed a novel perspective: the evolving tissue responses to continuous electromagnetic radiation stimulation are a joint evolution in temporal and spatial dimensions. Our model leverages TimesNet to extract periodic features and Cloblock to capture global information relevance in two-dimensional periodic vectors from ultrasound images. By assimilating more ultrasound temporal data, our model improves temperature-estimation accuracy. In the temperature range 25–65 °C, our neural network achieved temperature-estimation root mean squared errors of approximately 0.886 °C and 0.419 °C for fresh ex vivo pork tissue and phantoms, respectively. The proposed temporal-informed neural network has a modest parameter count, rendering it suitable for deployment on ultrasound mobile devices. Furthermore, it achieves temperature accuracy close to that prescribed by clinical standards, making it effective for non-destructive temperature monitoring during MH of biological tissues.

Abstract Backgrounds Reversing the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME) in the tumor is widely deemed to be an effective strategy to improve immune therapy. In particular, the redox balance in TME needs to be well controlled due to its critical role in mediating the functions of various cells, including cancer cells and immune-suppressive cells. Results Here, we propose an efficient strategy to reshape the redox homeostasis to reverse immunosuppressive TME. Specifically, we developed a microwave-chemo-immunostimulant CMMCP to promote the infiltration of the tumor-T cells by simultaneously reducing the reactive oxygen species (ROS) and glutathione (GSH) and improving the oxygen (O2) levels in TME. The CMMCP was designed by loading chemotherapy drugs cisplatin into the bimetallic Ce–Mn MOF nanoparticles coated with polydopamine. The Ce–Mn MOF nanoparticles can effectively improve the catalytic decomposition of ROS into O2 under microwave irradiation, resulting in overcoming hypoxia and limited ROS generation. Besides, the activity of intracellular GSH in TME was reduced by the redox reaction with Ce–Mn MOF nanoparticles. The reprogrammed TME not only boosts the immunogenic cell death (ICD) induced by cisplatin and microwave hyperthermia but also gives rise to the polarization of pro-tumor M2-type macrophages to the anti-tumor M1-type ones. Conclusion Our in vivo experimental results demonstrate that the microwave-chemo-immunostimulant CMMCP significantly enhances the T cell infiltration and thus improves the antitumor effect. This study presents an easy, safe, and effective strategy for a whole-body antitumor effect after local treatment.

Abstract Japan has a large gender gap; thus, this study examined whether Japanese 4- to 7-year-old children exhibit a “brilliance = males” stereotype and whether parental attitudes toward gender roles were related to children’s stereotypes. We also explored whether the children exhibited such stereotypes in response to various stimuli. We showed children photos (Study 1) and stick figures (Study 2) of men, women, boys, and girls, asking them to attribute traits (smart or nice) to each. Study 1 revealed overwhelming in-group positivity in girls, whereas the results for boys were rather mixed. In Study 2, girls generally attributed nice to their own gender compared to boys. However, “brilliance = males” stereotypical responses were observed from 7 years of age, when boys began to be more likely to attribute smartness to their own gender compared to girls. The new data in Study 3 replicated results of Study 1 and parts of the results of Study 2. Moreover, merging the Study 3 data with that of Studies 1 and 2 confirmed their findings. Furthermore, it replicated the “brilliance = males” stereotype among 7-year-olds in the stick figure task. Parental attitudes toward gender roles were unrelated to children’s gender stereotypes. The results indicated that Japanese children may acquire “brilliance = males” stereotypes later than American children (6-years-old). Furthermore, the results were clearer when children were presented with stick figure stimuli.

IntroductionAdults possess a natural inclination to associate sensory cues derived from distinct modalities, such as the pairing of sweet with pink. However, studies exploring crossmodal correspondences in children, particularly in the sensory pairing of visual features and tastes, are scant, leaving unanswered questions regarding the developmental trajectory of crossmodal correspondences. The present study investigates whether Japanese preschool children demonstrate specific biases in shape–color, shape–taste, and color–taste associations.MethodsIn a series of in-person experiments, 92 children between 3 to 6 years of age completed matching tasks utilizing paper stimuli.ResultsChildren exhibit crossmodal correspondences in shape-color (circle-red and asymmetrical star-yellow), shape–taste (triangle-salty and circle-sweet), and color–taste (yellow-sour, black-bitter, and pink-sweet) associations. Moreover, children’s choices are not influenced by their individual preferences.DiscussionThe crossmodal correspondences observed in this study have been observed in previous research on adults from the same (Japanese) culture, although adults showed more crossmodal correspondences than the children in this study (e.g., pink-circle, triangle-sour, and green-bitter). Thus, while some crossmodal correspondences emerge during childhood, others may require additional time to develop, thereby highlighting the importance of understanding the cognitive mechanisms underlying crossmodal correspondences from an ontogenic perspective.

Poroelastic road surface has been found to be an effective solution for the traffic noise due to their porosity and elastic properties compared with conventional asphalt surface. However, the appropriate polyurethane for road utilization is still unclear and undetermined, the tensile properties of polyurethane rubber particle mixture based on different types of polyurethane adhesive and rubber particles were rarely studied. This study aims to primarily select the road polyurethane adhesive, investigate the stage changes during the tensile test and the interface change after the fracture of polyurethane rubber particle mixture (PRPM). Rubber particles with one size and four different types (F2, F5, T, TA) of polyurethane with five dosages (15 %, 18 %, 21 %, 24 %, 27 %) were adopted to prepare polyurethane rubber particle mixtures. A bonding and curving equipment based on direct tensile test was developed, while a dog bone shape mold for forming specimens was self-designed. The results showed that the direct tensile change process of polyurethane rubber particle mixture could be divided into four stages: reaction delay stage, elastic deformation stage, fracture stage and post-fracture stage. With the increase of polyurethane content, the damaging effect of the mixture gradually transitioned from the polyurethane-rubber interface adhesion to the polyurethane-polyurethane interface binder cohesion. The polyurethane rubber particle mixture with polyurethane type F2 had high tensile properties at a content of 18 %.

Abstract Objective Social scientists have suggested two typical ways of acquiring social power: dominance approach (gaining social power by applying violence, coercion, threat, and punishment) and prestige approach (gaining admiration and liking by demonstrating competence and sharing experience and knowledge). However, little is known about how people recognize and evaluate the differentiated process of the approaches, and even less about the early development of these processes. In the current study, 5–6-year old children heard stories about pairs comprising a dominance-based and a prestige-based powerholder, chose one of the powerholders as their friend and leader, and predicted which powerholder will gain the contested resources. Results Compared to a dominance-based powerholder, children were more likely to choose a prestige-based powerholder as a friend and leader in different situations. Moreover, children predicted that prestige-based powerholders, and not dominance-based powerholders, would gain contested resources. These findings suggest that since childhood, human beings tend to be biased to not only judge prestige-based aspects as socially preferable, but also endorse the prestige-based powerholders’ priority to possess valuable resources, which subsequently strengthens their high social status. These early childhood preferences can be instrumental in providing more harmonious environments for children in educational and daily contexts.

Abstract Backgrounds Microwave sensitization nanoplatform, integrating multiple functional units for improving tumor selectivity, is of great significance for clinical tumor microwave treatment. Lanthanide europium metal organic framework (EuMOF) is expected to be a theranostic nanoplatform owing to its unique luminescent and microwave sensitization properties. However, it is difficult to be applied to complicated biological systems for EuMOF due to its rapid degradation induced by the solvent molecular and ionic environment. In this work, a luminescent EuMOF nanocomposite (EuMOF@ZIF/AP-PEG, named EZAP) was designed, which brought the multifunctional characteristics of microwave sensitization, fluorescence imaging and drug loading. Results Lamellar EuMOF was synthesized by a hydrothermal method. Through the charge adsorption mechanism, the zeolite imidazole framework (ZIF) structure was intensively assembled on the surface of EuMOF to realize the protection. Then, through in-situ Apatinib drug loading and PEG modification, EZAP nanocomposite was finally obtained. Apatinib (AP) was a kind of chemotherapy drug approved by Food and Drug Administration for targeted therapy of tumors. PEG modification increased long-term circulation of EZAP nanocomposite. The physical and chemical structure and properties of EuMOF@ZIF (EZ) were systematically represented, indicating the successful synthesis of the nanocomposite. The toxic and side effects were negligible at a safe dose. The growth of human liver cancer cells and murine liver cancer cells in vitro was significantly inhibited, and the combined microwave-thermal therapy and chemotherapy in vivo achieved high anti-cancer efficacy. Moreover, EZAP nanocomposite possessed bright red fluorescence, which can be applied for tumor imaging in tumor-bearing mice in vivo. Conclusion Therefore, EZAP nanocomposite showed high microwave sensitization, excellent fluorescence properties and outstanding drug loading capacity, establishing a promising theranostic nanoplatform for tumor therapy and fluorescence imaging. This work proposes a unique strategy to design for the first time a multifunctional nanoplatform with lanthanide metal organic frameworks for biological applications in tumor therapy and diagnosis. Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has led children to experience school closures. Although increasing evidence suggests that such intense social quarantine influences children’s social relationships with others, longitudinal studies are limited. Using longitudinal data collected during (T1) and after (T2) intensive school closure and home confinement, this study investigated the impacts of social quarantine on children’s social relationships. Japanese parents of children aged 0–9 years (n = 425) completed an online questionnaire that examined children’s socio-emotional behavior and perceived proximity to parents or others. The results demonstrated that social quarantine was not significantly related to children’s socio-emotional behavior across all age groups. However, changes in children’s perceived proximity varied depending on certain age-related factors: elementary schoolers’ perceived closeness to parents significantly decreased after the reopening of schools, whereas that to others, such as peers, increased. Such effects were not observed in infants and preschoolers. The follow-up survey 9-month after the reopening of schools (T3; n = 130) did not detect significant differences in both children’s socio-emotional behavior and perceived proximity from that after the intense quarantine. These findings suggest that school closure and home confinement may have influenced children’s social development differently across their age, and its effects were larger in perceived closeness rather than social behavior.

Nature vs. nurture is an enduring theme of studies of the mind. Past studies on American children and adults have revealed a preference for thinking that even fundamental cognitive abilities documented in human infants and non-human species are late-emerging and reliant on learning and nurture. However, little is known about the generalizability of this “intuitive empiricist” belief and what factors may help explain it. Adult participants (N = 600) reported their beliefs about the emergence of several fundamental cognitive abilities demonstrated by preverbal infants. Studies 1A-1C showed that adults from both Japan and the US similarly estimated an older age of onset for cognitive abilities in human children as compared to the findings of cognitive science and consistently attributed acquisition of these abilities to learning rather than innateness in humans, and they made these learning attributions more so for humans than for non-human species. Study 2 showed that participants’ beliefs about biological evolution versus creationism were related to their age onset estimates for fundamental cognitive abilities, and their beliefs about the malleability of intelligence were related to participants’ explanations of the origin of fundamental cognitive abilities. These findings suggest generalizable preferences for nurture over nature across both Eastern and Western cultures (Japan and the United States), which may be related to people’s beliefs about human origins and the power of learning.

Abstract Claims to supernatural power have been used as a basis for authority in a wide range of societies, but little is known about developmental origins of the link between supernatural power and worldly authority. Here, we show that 12- to 16-month-old infants expect agents exhibiting counterintuitive capacities to win out in a two-way standoff over a contested resource. Infants watched two agents gain a reward using either physically intuitive or physically counterintuitive methods, the latter involving simple forms of levitation or teleportation. Infants looked longer, indicating surprise, when the physically intuitive agent subsequently outcompeted a physically counterintuitive agent in securing a reward. Control experiments indicated that infants’ expectations were not simply motived by the efficiency of agents in pursuing their goals, but specifically the deployment of counterintuitive capacities. This suggests that the link between supernatural power and worldly authority has early origins in development.

The central Yellow Sea Mud (CYSM) is a vital part of the coastal sand and distal mud depositional system in the South Yellow Sea (SYS). Previous studies concerning the sedimentary evolution of this area have almost exclusively concentrated on its interior during the Holocene instead of its periphery. In this study, we used a sediment core (H10), with a significantly slow sedimentary rate, to reconstruct the sedimentary evolution at the east edge of the CYSM since MIS3a (∼45 kyr). This mainly involved using detrital minerals, the chemical compositions of garnet, and grain size. The provenance of coarser sediments has remarkable Yellow River-derived characteristics, especially during MIS2 and MIS1. The sedimentary evolution was primarily controlled by hydrodynamic regimes accompanied by changes in relative sea levels (RSLs) and climates. During MIS3a, frequent RSL fluctuations and powerful tidal current erosion were responsible for two facie shifts from the neritic sea to the shore and the lower sedimentary rate in the study area. A paleo-cold water mass and muddy deposition occurred during the high RSL stages with authigenic pyrite enrichment. During MIS2, the paleo-Yellow River was distributed on the SYS and flowed through the study area. Fluvial deposition on the shelf may be eroded by the strong winter monsoon, with an extremely dry and cold climate. Since ∼9.6 kyr, intense hydrodynamic regimes, which were induced by tidal current and upwelling, were responsible for the very much thin deposition, and coarser sediments remained in the study area. Notably, combined with previously studied cores, a much more detailed and intuitional cognition for CYSM formation can be obtained via our special perspective: mud periphery. This study elucidates the sedimentary system evolution and mud area formation of continental shelf seas.

Abstract Cancer, as one of the most attention‐grabbing medical problems, has been tried to solve with various methods. With the development of nanotechnology, diagnosis and therapy based on nanoplatforms have become new dawn for overcoming cancer problems. Biocompatible nanoplatforms integrating diagnosis and therapy technology for cancer have been extensively studied. Most of the reported works focus on the diagnosis and therapy of subcutaneous tumor. To promote clinical application, it is of great significance to develop efficient methods for deep tumors. This work reviews the latest research progress and future development prospects for the diagnosis and therapy of deep tumors based on biocompatible nanoplatforms. It mainly introduces four cancer diagnostic technologies (fluorescence imaging (FI), computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and photoacoustic imaging (PAI)) and four tumor treatment methods (phototherapy, ultrasound therapy, radiotherapy (RT), and microwave therapy (MWT)) based on the nanoplatforms. Several diagnostic techniques and treatment methods are systematically summarized and compared, and the advantages and limitations of different methods in tumors are discussed. At last, the application prospects and challenges of the nanoplatforms for the diagnosis and therapy of deep tumors are discussed. It is hoped that this review will provide some useful information for the research in this field.

Efficient data collection in developmental studies is facing challenges due to the decreased birth rates in many regions, reproducibility problems in psychology research, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Here, we propose a novel platform for online developmental science research, the Baby’s Online Live Database (BOLD), which extends the scope of the accessible participant pool, simplifies its management, and enables participant recruitment for longitudinal studies. Through BOLD, researchers can conduct online recruitment of participants preregistered to BOLD simply by specifying their attributes, such as gender and age, and direct the participants to dedicated webpages for each study. Moreover, BOLD handles participant recruitment and reward payment, thereby freeing researchers from the labor of participant management. BOLD also allows researchers the opportunity to access data that were collected from participants in previous research studies. This enables researchers to carry out longitudinal analyses at a relatively low cost. To make BOLD widely accessible, a consortium was formed within the Japan Society of Baby Science, where members from diverse research groups discussed the blueprint of this system. Once in full-scaled operation, BOLD is expected to serve as a platform for various types of online studies and facilitate international collaboration among developmental scientists in the near future.

Abstract Background The bHLH (basic helix-loop-helix) transcription factor is one of the largest families of transcription factors in plants, containing a large number of members with diverse functions. Chinese jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.) is the species with the highest economic value in the family Rhamnaceae. However, the characteristics of the bHLH family in the jujube genome are still unclear. Hence, ZjbHLHs were first searched at a genome-wide level, their expression levels under various conditions were investigated systematically, and their protein-protein interaction networks were predicted. Results We identified 92 ZjbHLHs in the jujube genome, and these genes were classified into 16 classes according to bHLH domains. Ten ZjbHLHs with atypical bHLH domains were found. Seventy ZjbHLHs were mapped to but not evenly distributed on 12 pseudo- chromosomes. The domain sequences among ZjbHLHs were highly conserved, and their conserved residues were also identified. The tissue-specific expression of 37 ZjbHLH genes in jujube and wild jujube showed diverse patterns, revealing that these genes likely perform multiple functions. Many ZjbHLH genes were screened and found to be involved in flower and fruit development, especially in earlier developmental stages. A few genes responsive to phytoplasma invasion were also verified. Based on protein-protein interaction prediction and homology comparison, protein-protein interaction networks composed of 92 ZjbHLHs were also established. Conclusions This study provides a comprehensive bioinformatics analysis of 92 identified ZjbHLH genes. We explored their expression patterns in various tissues, the flowering process, and fruit ripening and under phytoplasma stress. The protein-protein interaction networks of ZjbHLHs provide valuable clues toward further studies of their biological functions.

In this article, a multiple surrogate-model-based optimization method using the multimodal expected improvement criterion (MSMEIC) is proposed. In MSMEIC, an important region is first identified and used alternately with the whole space. Then, in each iteration, three common surrogate models, kriging, radial basis function (RBF), and quadratic response surface (QRS), are constructed, and a multipoint expected improvement (EI) criterion that selects the highest peak and other peaks of EI is proposed to obtain several potential candidates. Furthermore, the optimal predictions of the three surrogate models are regarded as potential candidates. After deleting redundant candidates, the remaining points are saved as the new sampling points. Finally, several well-known benchmark functions and an engineering application are employed to assess the performance of MSMEIC. The testing results demonstrate that, compared with four recent counterparts, the proposed method can obtain more precise solutions more efficiently and with strong robustness.

Small mountainous rivers (SMRs), particularly those in the tropics, play a disproportionate role in global carbon cycling and have been heavily disturbed by anthropogenic activities during the Anthropocene. Identifying the sources of particulate organic matter (POM) in SMRs and their influencing factors have crucial scientific significance in terms of filling a cognitional gap concerning the fate of POM in tropical land–ocean ecosystems and practical values regarding environmental management and ecological evaluation. In this study, total suspended solids concentration, particulate organic carbon and particulate nitrogen contents, stable carbon isotope (δ13C), and C/N ratio of suspended particulates were investigated from five SMRs (Fangcheng, Maoling, Qin, Dafeng, and Nanliu) in Guangxi Province, southwest China. The soil (OMsoil), C3 plants (OMC3), and autochthonous production (OMauto) were identified as potential POM sources, and their relative contributions were quantified via the use of end-member mixing models that were based on the classic indicators of δ13C and C/N. The results showed that soil was the biggest POM contributor in Nanliu, Qin, and Maoling rivers, whereas OMC3 was more important in Fangcheng River. Compared to other watersheds, the OMauto accounted for a very minor proportion of the POM sources in Fangcheng River. Nanliu and Fangcheng, as typical representatives of agricultural and forest watersheds, respectively, exhibited remarkable differences in terms of POM sources. Land use patterns that were dominated by agricultural expansion, the soil erosion that resulted from the destruction of vegetation and engineering construction, and hydrological characteristics such as flow velocity and nutrient concentration were all found to vastly impact the sources of POM reaching the different types of SMR. These influencing factors are mainly derived from anthropogenic activities, whose effects on the tropical SMRs ecosystems and even the global biogeochemical cycle, may exceed our expectation.

Mangroves, a blue carbon ecosystem between land and ocean in the (sub)tropics, are sensitive to changes in climate and the sea level. It is imperative to reconstruct the historical dynamics of their development to predict the fate of mangrove ecosystems in the backdrop of rapid global changes. This study analyzes records of the sources of organic matter from sediment core Q43 of Qinzhou Bay in tropical China by using the endmember mixing model based on stable organic carbon isotopes and C/N ratio. Mangrove-derived organic matter (MOM) is regarded as a reliable indicator for reconstructing the historical development of mangroves. The variations in MOM in Qinzhou Bay over the past ∼3,000 cal yr BP indicate that mangrove forests underwent two periods of flourishment: ∼2,200–1,750 cal yr BP and ∼1,370–600 cal yr BP, as well as three periods of deterioration: ∼3,000–2,200 cal yr BP, ∼1,750–1,370 cal yr BP, and ∼600–0 cal yr BP. Of factors that might have been influential, changes in the relative sea level and the regional hydrological environment (e.g., seawater temperature, salinity, and hydrodynamic conditions) did not appear to have notable effects on mangrove flourishing/degradation. However, climate change, especially the variation in air temperature, formed the primary factor controlling mangrove development. The stages of mangrove flourishing/deterioration corresponded to the warm/cold periods of the climate, respectively. Noteworthy is that the rapid rise in air temperature during the Anthropocene warm period should have promoted mangrove development, but the increasing intensity of human activity has reversed this tendency leading to the degradation of mangroves.

Hypoxia, as a distinctive feature of tumors, is closely related to tumor recurrence, metastasis, and treatment resistance. Metal-organic framework (MOF) exhibits an increasing number of advantages in cancer therapy owing to its porous structure, large specific surface area, and tunable function. The MOF nanocomposites constructed by adjusting components can effectively overcome tumor hypoxia and significantly enhance the anti-tumor effect. In this review, the hypoxic characteristics of tumors and current strategies for constructing MOF nanocomposites that can overcome tumor hypoxia are summarized, including for delivering O2 or endogenously generating O2 to elevate intra-tumor O2 content; inhibiting HIF-1 and its induced products to alleviate tumor hypoxia; reducing cellular aerobic respiration to decrease cellular O2 consumption, and exacerbating hypoxia to improve the efficacy of hypoxia-activated pre-drugs. At the same time, the applications of MOF nanocomposites applied to overcome tumor hypoxia in different therapeutic methods at the present stage are described, and finally, the challenges and opportunities in further development of MOF nanocomposites are discussed. Due to the low solubility of CsBr in organic solvents, the CsPbBr3 film prepared by the multi-step method has holes and insufficient thickness, and the light absorption capacity and current density of the perovskite film hinder the further improvement in the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of CsPbBr3 solar cells. In this study, we introduced InBr3 into the PbBr2 precursor solution and adjusted the concentration of PbBr2, successfully prepared PbBr2 with a porous structure on the compact TiO2 (c-TiO2) substrate to ensure that it fully reacted with CsBr, and obtained the planar carbon-based CsPbBr3 solar cells with high-quality perovskite film. The results reveal that the porous PbBr2 structure and the increasing PbBr2 concentration are beneficial to increase the thickness of the CsPbBr3 films, optimize the surface morphology, and significantly enhance the light absorption capacity. Finally, the PCE of the CsPbBr3 solar cells obtained after conditions optimization was 5.76%.

Abstract Objective Experiencing physical warmth has been demonstrated to influence interpersonal warmth. However, the effects of this metaphorical link in an intergroup context is not clear. The current study aimed to investigate the effect of physical warmth on implicit attitudes and behavior toward outgroup members in a Japanese–Chinese intergroup context. After touching either a warm or cold cup for 3 min, the Japanese participants were required to complete the single-target implicit association test, which aimed to measure their implicit attitudes toward imagined Chinese people, and to express their willingness to participate in the experiments of a Chinese individual whom they interacted directly without compensation, aiming to measure their prosocial behavior toward a real outgroup member. Results The results demonstrated that female participants who touched the warm (vs. cold) cup showed more positive attitudes and helping behavior toward the Chinese individual. Furthermore, the correlation between those attitudes and helping behaviors supports the effects of enhanced implicit attitudes and further suggests that experiencing physical warmth could increase prosocial response to outgroup members in real interactions. However, the male participants showed a reversed, but not statistically significant, effect of physical warmth on the implicit attitude.
