Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) is a prevalent condition among elderly women. After menopause, women exhibit decreased iron excretion, which is prone to osteoporosis. To design a specific titanium implant for PMOP, we first analyze miRNAs and DNA characteristics of postmenopausal patients with and without osteoporosis. The results indicate that iron overload disrupts iron homeostasis in the pathogenesis of PMOP. Further experiments confirm that iron overload can cause lipid peroxidation and ferroptosis of MSCs, thus breaking bone homeostasis. Based on the findings above, we have designed a novel Ti implant coated with nanospheres of caffeic acid (CA) and deferoxamine (DFO). CA can bind on the Ti surface through the two adjacent phenolic hydroxyls and polymerize into polycaffeic acid (PCA) dimer, as well as the PCA nanospheres with the repetitive 1,4-benzodioxan units. DFO was grafted with PCA through borate ester bonds. The experimental results showed that modified Ti can inhibit the ferroptosis of MSCs in the pathological environment of PMOP and promote osseointegration in two main ways. Firstly, DFO was released under high oxidative stress, chelating with excess iron and decreasing the labile iron pool in MSCs. Meanwhile, CA and DFO activated the KEAP1/NRF2/HMOX1 pathway in MSCs and reduced the level of intracellular lipid peroxidation. So, the ferroptosis of MSCs is inhibited by promoting the SLC7A11/GSH/GPX4 pathway. Furthermore, the remained CA coating on the Ti surface could reduce the extracellular oxidative stress and glutathione level. This study offers a novel inspiration for the specific design of Ti implants in the treatment of PMOP.

Abstract This paper aims to examine the potential link between maternal COVID-19 infection during pregnancy and the increased risk of congenital heart disease (CHD) in newborns. A comparative analysis was conducted involving two groups: mothers infected with COVID-19 during pregnancy and a control group. Data on maternal characteristics, pregnancy-related complications, and newborn outcomes were collected and analyzed. Additionally, the annual incidence rates of CHD from 2020 to 2023 were evaluated to assess trends over time. No significant differences were found between the COVID-19 cases and the control group in terms of maternal age, BMI, gravidity, parity, use of assisted reproductive technology, adverse obstetric history, or complications during pregnancy, including diabetes mellitus, preeclampsia, and thyroid abnormalities. For newborn outcomes, there were no significant differences in sex distribution, rate of cesarean delivery, Apgar scores, or birth weight. However, a significantly higher prevalence of cardiac ultrasound abnormalities was observed in the COVID-19 group (10.08%) compared to the control group (4.13%, p = 0.012). Further analysis revealed that the majority of cardiac abnormalities in the COVID-19 group occurred in mothers infected before 8 weeks of pregnancy. The annual incidence rates of CHD showed a significant increase during the COVID-19 pandemic, with the highest rate in 2023 (5.46%) compared to previous years. Maternal COVID-19 infection during pregnancy may adversely affect the development of the newborn’s heart. This could be due to the inflammatory response caused by the viral infection or other pathological processes. The findings underscore the importance of vigilant prenatal care and early detection of cardiac abnormalities during the pandemic and suggest the need for further research to explore potential mechanisms and intervention strategies.

Abstract Under subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) conditions, astrocytes undergo a marked intensification of glycolytic activity, resulting in the generation of substantial amounts of lactate to maintain the energy demand for neurons and other brain cells. Lactate has garnered increasing attention in recent years because of its emerging role in critical biological processes such as inflammation regulation and neuroprotection, particularly through its histone lactylation. Bromodomain-containing protein 4 (BRD4) plays a crucial role in maintaining neural development and promoting memory formation in the central nervous system. Nonetheless, the function and regulatory mechanism of BRD4 and histone lactylation in astrocytes following SAH remain elusive. Our findings indicate that BRD4, a crucial epigenetic regulator, plays a definitive role in histone lactylation. Both in vitro and in vivo, these results demonstrated that targeted silencing of BRD4 in astrocytes can significantly reduce H4K8la lactylation, thereby aggravating the A1 polarization of astrocytes and ultimately affecting the recovery of neural function and prognosis in mice after SAH. In summary, BRD4 plays a pivotal role in modulating astrocyte polarization following SAH via histone lactylation. Targeting this mechanism might offer an efficient therapeutic strategy for SAH.

Abstract The quest for mechanoluminescence (ML) in zinc sulfide (ZnS) spans more than a century, initially sparked by observations of natural minerals. There has been a resurgence in research into ML materials in recent decades, driven by advances in optoelectronic technologies and a deeper understanding of their luminescent properties under mechanical stress. ZnS, in particular, has garnered attention owing to its remarkable ability to sustain luminescence after more than 100,000 mechanical stimulations, positioning it as a standout candidate for optoelectronic applications. In contrast to conventional photoluminescent and electroluminescent light sources, ZnS composite elastomers have emerged as flexible, stretchable self‐powered light sources with considerable practical implications. This review introduces the development history, ML mechanisms, prototype ML devices, ZnS‐based ML material preparation methods, and their diverse applications spanning environmental mechanical‐to‐optical energy conversion, E‐signatures, anti‐counterfeiting, wearable information sensing devices, advanced battery‐free displays, biomedical imaging, and optical fiber sensors for human–computer interactions, among others. By integrating insights from ML‐optics, mechanics, and flexible optoelectronics, and by summarizing pertinent perspectives on current scientific challenges, application technology hurdles, and potential solutions for emerging scientific frontiers, this review aims to furnish fundamental guidance and conceptual frameworks for the design, advancement, and cutting‐edge application of novel mechanoluminescent materials.

Abstract Background Studies had suggested increased risk of death of residents was associated with typhoons, particularly coastal regions. However, these findings ignored the impact of inland typhoons on the health of residents, especially the indirect death risk caused by typhoons. This study aimed to investigate the acute death risk of residents during inland typhoon Lekima in Jinan, further identify vulnerable populations and areas. Methods We selected the daily death from 11 to 27th August 2019 in Jinan as case period, and conducted a time-stratified case-crossover design to match the contemporaneous data from 2016 to 2018 as control period. We used the generalized linear Poisson models to estimate the related effects of death risk during typhoon Lekima and lag days. Results During the Lekima typhoon month, there were 3,366 deaths occurred in Jinan. Compared to unexposed periods, the acute death risk of non-accidental diseases (especially circulatory diseases), female and the older adults increased significantly in the second week after the typhoon. The maximum significant effect of circulatory disease deaths, female and older adult deaths were appeared on lag9, lag9, and lag13 respectively. And the typhoon-associated RR were 1.19 (95%CI:1.05,1.34), 1.28 (95%CI:1.08,1.52), and 1.22 (95%CI:1.06,1.42) respectively. The acute death risk of residents living in TQ and CQ increased significantly on Lag2 and Lag6 after the typhoon, respectively, while those living in LX, LC, HY, JY, and SH occurred from Lag 8 to Lag 13 after the typhoon. LC lasted the longest days. Conclusions Typhoons would increase the vulnerability of residents living in Jinan which mainly occurred from the seventh day after the typhoon. Residents suffering from non-accidental diseases (circulatory diseases), female and the older adults were more vulnerable. The vulnerability of TQ and CQ occurred on Lag2 and Lag6 after typhoon Lekima, respectively, and the other areas except ZQ and PY occurred from Lag 8 to Lag 13. LC lasted the longest duration. Our findings emphasized the importance of the emergency response, which would help policymakers to identify vulnerable regions and populations accurately during typhoons and formulate the emergency response plan.

In light of the low dissolved oxygen concentration in the deep sea, the corrosion mechanisms of the high entropy alloy (HEA) AlCoCrFeNi in artificial seawater with varying oxygen concentrations (2.0, 4.0, 7.0 mg/L) were studied. As the oxygen concentration decreases, the alloy's free corrosion potential decreases, and at 2.0 mg/L, the corrosion rate is 421 times higher than that at 7.0 mg/L. The corrosion form transforms from pitting to uniform corrosion. The primary reasons for this are the passivation film is thin under low oxygen concentration conditions, as well as the preferential dissolution of the alloy elements Al and Ni due to their high activity and “local acidizing” properties, respectively. In designing a super corrosion-resistant high entropy alloy for use in the deep sea, it is advisable to avoid the use of element Al and to add Ni with caution.

Ultrasonic technology has drawn extensive interests for its great potential in marine antifouling applications. However, its effects on the adhesion behavior of marine fouling organisms on marine structures remain underexplored. This work investigated how ultrasonic treatment impacted the adhesion of Pseudoalteromonas on a gel-like marine epoxy primer. And the process parameters for ultrasonic treatment were optimized using response surface analysis with Design-Expert software 11. The results revealed that ultrasonic treatment disrupted the cellular structure of Pseudoalteromonas, causing the deformation and fragmentation of the cell membrane, leading to bacterial death. Additionally, ultrasonic treatment reduced the particle size and Zeta potential value of Pseudoalteromonas, which disrupted the stability of bacterial suspensions. It also increased the relative surface hydrophobicity of Pseudoalteromonas cells, resulting in a reduction in adhesion to the gel-like marine epoxy primer. This study demonstrated that ultrasonic treatment significantly disturbed the adhesion behavior of microorganisms like Pseudoalteromonas on the gel-like marine epoxy primer, which provided an effective approach for controlling marine biofouling.

Abstract Objective This study aimed to evaluate the association between the initial dose of MMI and the clinical course, as well as adverse effects on young people with GD. Methods One hundred and sixty-one children and adolescents with newly diagnosed GD were enrolled for this study and categorized into four groups based on initial serum-free T3 and T4 levels and daily MMI doses: Group A (mild, 0.3–0.5 mg/kg/day, n = 78), Group B (moderate, 0.6–0.8 mg/kg/day, n = 37), Group C (severe, 0.6–0.8 mg/kg/day, n = 24), and Group D (severe, 0.8-1.0 mg/kg/day, n = 22). The thyroid function, blood cell analysis and liver function were examined before treatment and at 4, 8 and 12 weeks after treatment. Outcome of long-term follow-up were also observed. Results After 12 weeks of treatment, 91.0% of the patients in group A and 90.9% of the patients in group D recovered to normalization of FT3, which was slightly higher than the other two groups; 70.8% of the patients in group C recovered to normalization of FT4, which was slightly lower than that in the other three groups. Abstract Mechanoluminescence is a smart light‐emitting phenomenon in which applied mechanical energy is directly converted into photon emissions. In particular, mechanoluminescent materials have shown considerable potential for applications in the fields of energy and sensing. This study thoroughly investigates the mechanoluminescence and long afterglow properties of singly doped and codoped Sr2MgSi2O7(SMSO) with varying concentrations of Eu2+ and Dy3+ ions. Subsequently, a comprehensive analysis of its multimode luminescence properties, including photoluminescence, mechanoluminescence, long afterglow, and X‐ray‐induced luminescence, is conducted. In addition, the density of states mapping is acquired through first‐principles calculations, confirming that the enhanced mechanoluminescence properties of SMSO primarily stem from the deep trap introduced by Dy3+. In contrast to traditional mixing with Polydimethylsiloxane, in this study, the powders are incorporated into optically transparent wood to produce a multiresponse with mechanoluminescence, long afterglow, and X‐ray‐excited luminescence. This structure is achieved by pretreating natural wood, eliminating lignin, and subsequently modifying the wood to overall modification using various smart phosphors and epoxy resin composites. After natural drying, a multifunctional composite wood structure with diverse luminescence properties is obtained. Owing to its environmental friendliness, sustainability, self‐power, and cost‐effectiveness, this smart mechanoluminescence wood is anticipated to find extensive applications in construction materials and energy‐efficient displays.

Background: QiDiTangShen granules (QDTS), a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) compound prescription, have remarkable efficacy in diabetic nephropathy (DN) patients, and their pharmacological mechanism needs further exploration. Methods: According to the active ingredients and targets of the QDTS in the TCMSP database, the network pharmacology of QDTS was investigated. The potential active ingredients were chosen based on the oral bioavailability and the drug similarity index. At the same time, targets for DN-related disease were obtained from GeneCards, OMIM, PharmGKB, TTD, and DrugBank. The TCM-component-target network and the protein-protein interaction (PPI) network were constructed with the Cytoscape and STRING platforms, respectively, and then the core targets of DN were selected with CytoNCA. GO and KEGG enrichment analysis using R software. Molecular docking to identify the core targets of QDTS for DN. In vivo, db/db mice were treated as DN models, and the urine microalbuminuria, the pathological changes in the kidney and the protein expression levels of p-PI3K, p-Akt, JUN, nephrin and synaptopodin were detected by immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence method and Western blotting. After QDTS was used in vitro, the protein expression of mouse podocyte clone-5 (MPC5) cells was detected by immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence and Western blot. Results: Through network pharmacology analysis, 153 potential targets for DN in QDTS were identified, 19 of which were significant. The KEGG enrichment analysis indicated that QDTS might have therapeutic effects on IL-17, TNF, AGE-RAGE, PI3K-Akt, HIF-1, and EGFR through interfering with Akt1 and JUN. The main active ingredients in QDTS are quercetin, β-sitosterol, stigmasterol and kaempferol. Both in vivo and in vitro studies showed that QDTS could decrease the urine microalbuminuria and renal pathology of db/db mice, and alleviate podocyte injuries through the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. Conclusion: Through network pharmacology, in vivo and in vitro experiments, QDTS has been shown to improve the urine microalbuminuria and renal pathology in DN, and to reduce podocyte damage via the PI3K/Akt pathway.

In this paper, a new class of Cucker-Smale systems with distributed delays are developed from the measurement perspective. By combining dissipative differential inequalities with a continuity argument, some new sufficient criteria for the flocking dynamics of the proposed model with general communication rate, especially the non-normalized rate, are established. In order to achieve the prescribed pattern motion, the driving force term is incorporated into the delayed collective system. Lastly, some examples and simulations are provided to illustrate the validity of the theoretical results.

BackgroundsDiabetes nephropathy (DN) is a growing public health concern worldwide. Renal dysfunction impairment in DN is intimately linked to ER stress and its related signaling pathways. Nonetheless, the underlying mechanism and biomarkers for this function of ER stress in the DN remain unknown.MethodsMicroarray datasets were retrieved from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database, and ER stress-related genes (ERSRGs) were downloaded from the MSigDB and GeneCards database. We identified hub ERSRGs for DN progression by intersecting ERSRGs with differentially expressed genes and significant genes in WGCNA, followed by a functional analysis. After analyzing hub ERSRGs with three machine learning techniques and taking the intersection, we did external validation as well as developed a DN diagnostic model based on the characteristic genes. Immune infiltration was performed using CIBERSORT. Moreover, patients with DN were then categorized using a consensus clustering approach. Eventually, the candidate ERSRGs-specific small-molecule compounds were defined by CMap.ResultsSeveral biological pathways driving pathological injury of DN and disordered levels of immune infiltration were revealed in the DN microarray datasets and strongly related to deregulated ERSRGs by bioinformatics multi-chip integration. Moreover, CDKN1B, EGR1, FKBP5, GDF15, and MARCKS were identified as ER stress signature genes associated with DN by machine learning algorithms, demonstrating their potential as DN biomarkers.ConclusionsOur research sheds fresh light on the function of ER stress in DN pathophysiology and the development of early diagnostic and ER stress-related treatment targets in patients with DN.

Rabbit hemorrhagic disease (RHD) is an acute fatal disease caused by the rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV). Since the first outbreaks of type 2 RHDV (RHDV2) in April 2020 in China, the persistence of this virus in the rabbit population has caused substantial economic losses in rabbit husbandry. Previous failures in preventing RHDV2 prompted us to further investigate the immune mechanisms underlying the virus’s pathogenicity, particularly concerning the spleen, a vital component of the mononuclear phagocyte system (MPS). For this, a previous RHDV2 isolate, CHN/SC2020, was utilized to challenge naive adult rabbits. Then, the splenic transcriptome was determined by RNA-Seq. This study showed that the infected adult rabbits had 3148 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), which were associated with disease, signal transduction, cellular processes, and cytokine signaling categories. Of these, 100 upregulated DEGs were involved in inflammatory factors such as IL1α, IL-6, and IL-8. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis showed that these DEGs were significantly enriched in the cytokine–cytokine receptor interaction signaling pathway, which may play a vital role in CHN/SC2020 infection. At the same time, proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines were significantly increased in the spleen at the late stages of infection. These findings suggested that RHDV2 (CHN/SC2020) might induce dysregulation of the cytokine network and compromise splenic immunity against viral infection, which expanded our understanding of RHDV2 pathogenicity.

Mechanoluminescence (ML) materials, which directly convert mechanical energy into light emission, have emerged as an emerging class of light-emitting materials with various applications. Although significant progress has been made in the development of new ML materials and devices, their practical application is limited by their low intensity and homogenously structured host structures. Thus, multiple-structured host ML materials with high ML intensity and reproducibility are needed, particularly for wearable and printable ML light sources with high brightness. In this study, various Mn-doped ternary heterojunction ML materials, CaZnOS-ZnS-SrZnOS, are synthesised by high-temperature solid-phase reactions, and their luminescence properties are systematically tested. The result indicates that the ternary heterojunction materials have a higher ML intensity over 60 times stronger than the state-of-art SrZnOS: Mn2+, which is currently the brightest sample we have obtained. ML linearly depends on the magnitude of the applied force. Based on the synthesised ternary ML heterojunctions, repetitive self-driving luminescence of the zipper is achieved for the first time through powder modification and inlay; the clothes composed of our prepared zippers are pulled and bent when worn on the body to emit bright visible light. Additionally, a Velcro that can achieve light emission is developed; it provides a new idea for the development of wearable flexible self-luminous devices in the future. Simultaneously, movement-driven stress luminous printable objects that can be printed on the surface of various commodities or their packaging are demonstrated. The preparation of self-driven, battery-free, and electrode-free stress luminescence wearable low light sources has an important application trend, which can avoid the interference of the circuit and improve the stability of the devices, thus promising a wide range of applications in smart wear, energy-saving displays, safety and rescue, robotic skin, and information security.

IntroductionRecent studies have shown much progress in the research of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in autoimmune diseases (AIDs). However, there is no bibliometric analysis in this research field. This study aimed to provide a bibliometrics review of the knowledge structure and research hotspots of NETs in AIDs.MethodsArticles relevant to NETs in AIDs from 2010 to 2022 were retrieved through the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database. This bibliometric analysis was performed by VOSview, CiteSpace, and Scimago Graphica.ResultsA total of 289 papers analyzed in this research were from 493 organizations in 47 countries by 1537 authors. They were published in 133 journals and cited 20,180 citations from 2,465 journals. The number of annual publications in this field is growing steadily and rapidly, with the United States, China and Germany leading the research effort. Frontiers in Immunology and Journal of Immunology have significantly impacted research in this field. Kaplan, Mariana J, from the National Institutes of Health (The United States), has the most published articles, and Brinkmann, v, from Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology (Germany), is the most co-cited author. Systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis are the leading topics in this field. The trend of clinical application in the future is the development of new therapies by controlling NETs in the progression of AIDs.ConclusionsOur study summarized the research trends and developments of NETs in AIDs in recent years and would provide a reference for scholars in this field.

Background: N6-methyladenosine (m6A) mRNA modification triggers malignant behavior in tumor cells, which promotes malignant progression and migration of gastric cancer (GC). Nevertheless, studies on the prognostic value of m6A-related long non-coding RNA (MRlncRNA) in GC remain quite restricted. The study aimed to develop a reasonable predictive model to explore the prognostic potential of MRlncRNAs in predicting the prognosis of GC patients and monitoring the efficacy of immunotherapy.Methods: Transcriptomic and clinical data for GC were derived from TCGA. Next, univariate Cox, LASSO and multivariate Cox regression analyses were next used to identify prognostic MRlncRNAs, calculate risk scores and build risk assessment models. The predictive power of the risk models was then validated by Kaplan-Meier analysis, ROC curves, DCA, C-index, and nomogram. We attempted to effectively differentiate between groups in terms of immune cell infiltration status, ICI-related genes, immunotherapy responses, and common anti-tumor drug sensitivity.Results: A risk model based on 11 MRlncRNAs was developed with an AUC of 0.850, and the sensitivity and specificity of this model in predicting survival probability is satisfactory. The Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed that the low-risk group in the model had a significantly higher survival rate, and the model was highly associated with survival status, clinical features, and clinical stage. Furthermore, the model was verified to be an independent prognostic risk factor, and the low-risk group in the model had a remarkable positive correlation with a variety of immune cell infiltrates. The expression levels of ICI-related genes differed significantly between the different groups. Lastly, immunotherapy responses and common anti-tumor drug sensitivity also differed significantly between different groups.Conclusion: The risk model on the basis of 11-MRlncRNAs can serve as independent predictors of GC prognosis and may be useful in developing personalized treatment strategies for patients.

Viral DNA load was analyzed through quantitative real-time PCR. BackgroundThe prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has significant gender and age difference. The peak age of RA is consistent with the age of menopause, which is accompanied by a sharp increase in serum follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) level. This study aims to identify the FSH levels in female RA patients and the relationship with diseases activity.MethodsIn total, 79 female RA patients and 50 age-matched controls were included in our study. Serum sex hormones levels were measured using chemiluminescence. RA patients were grouped by FSH quartile. Disease activity and inflammatory marks were analyzed among groups.ResultsLower sex hormones and higher gonadotropin were found in RA patients. Serum FSH level was significantly higher in RA patients than in the age-match controls (57.58 ± 15.94 vs. 43.11 ± 19.46, p=0.025). Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a devastating form of stroke, which poses a series of intractable challenges to clinical practice. Imbalance of mitochondrial homeostasis has been thought to be the crucial pathomechanism in early brain injury (EBI) cascade after SAH. Irisin, a protein related to metabolism and mitochondrial homeostasis, has been reported to play pivotal roles in post-stroke neuroprotection. However, whether this myokine can exert neuroprotection effects after SAH remains unknown. In the present study, we explored the protective effects of irisin and the underlying mechanisms related to mitochondrial biogenesis in a SAH animal model. Endovascular perforation was used to induce SAH, and recombinant irisin was administered intracerebroventricularly. Neurobehavioral assessments, TdT-UTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) staining, dihydroethidium (DHE) staining, immunofluorescence, western blot, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were performed for post-SAH assessments. We demonstrated that irisin treatment improved neurobehavioral scores, reduced neuronal apoptosis, and alleviated oxidative stress in EBI after SAH. More importantly, the administration of exogenous irisin conserved the mitochondrial morphology and promoted mitochondrial biogenesis. The protective effects of irisin were partially reversed by the mitochondrial uncoupling protein-2 (UCP-2) inhibitor. Taken together, irisin may have neuroprotective effects against SAH via improving the mitochondrial biogenesis, at least in part, through UCP-2 related targets.

Lithium (Li)-rich manganese (Mn)-rich oxide (LMR) cathode materials, despite of the high specific capacity up to 250 mAh g−1 suffer from instability of cathode/electrolyte interfacial layer at high working voltages, causing continuous voltage decay and capacity fading, especially at elevated temperatures. In various battery systems, localized high-concentration electrolytes (LHCEs) have been widely reported as a promising candidate to form effective electrode/electrolyte interphases. Here, an optimized LHCE is studied in graphite (Gr)-based full cells containing LMR cathode, being cycled at 25, 45 and 60 °C with the reference of a conventional LiPF6-based electrolyte. It is revealed that the LHCE can effectively suppress continuous electrolyte decompositions and mitigate the dissolution of Mn ions due to the formation of more protective electrode/electrolyte interphases on both anode and cathode, which, in turn, lead to significantly improved cycling stability and enhanced rate capability under the selected temperatures. The mechanistic understanding on the failure of the conventional LiPF6-containing electrolyte and the function of the LHCE in Gr||LMR cells under high temperatures provides valuable perspectives of electrolyte development for practical applications of LMR cathodes in high energy density batteries over a wide temperature range.

Abstract This paper presents a study of a possible contribution to a Higgs boson signal in the hh → γγγγ channel due to H → hh decays, in the framework of the CP-conserving 2-Higgs Doublet Model Type-I (2HDM-I), where the heavier of the two CP-even Higgs bosons defined herein, H, is the SM-like Higgs state observed with a mass of 125 GeV at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We perform a broad scan of the 2HDM-I parameter space, in presence of both up-to-date theoretical and experimental constraints, in order to extract the interesting regions yielding such a signal. Then, after validating our numerical framework against public experimental analyses carried out at the LHC, we proceed to assess its scope in constraining and/or extracting the gg → H → hh → γγγγ signal in presence of a sophisticated Monte Carlo (MC) simulation. We find that, over a substantial region of the 2HDM-I parameter space presently un-accessible, the LHC will be able to establish such a potential signature in the next 2–3 years.

QiDiTangShen granules (QDTS) have been proven to reduce the proteinuria in patients with diabetic nephropathy (DN) effectively. The present study was aimed to investigate the mechanism underlying QDTS’s renoprotection. The main components of QDTS were identified by ultra-high liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and pharmacological databases, among which active components were screened by oral bioavailability and drug-likeness. Their regulation on autophagy-related nutrient-sensing signal molecules (AMPK, SIRT1, and mTOR) was retrieved and analyzed through the Pubmed database. Then, db/db mice were randomly divided into three groups (model control, valsartan and QDTS), and given intragastric administration for 12 weeks, separately. Fasting and random blood glucose, body weight, urinary albumin excretion (UAE) and injury markers of liver and kidney were investigated to evaluate the effects and safety. Renal histological lesions were assessed, and the expressions of proteins related to nutrient-sensing signals and autophagy were investigated. Thirteen active components were screened from 78 components identified. Over half the components had already been reported to improve nutrient-sensing signals. QDTS significantly reduced UAE, ameliorated mesangial matrix deposition, alleviate the expression of protein and mRNA of TGF-β, α-SMA, and Col I, as well as improved the quality of mitochondria and the number of autophagic vesicles of renal tubular cells although the blood glucose was not decreased in db/db mice. Compared to the db/db group, the expression of the autophagy-inducible protein (Atg14 and Beclin1) and microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3-II (LC3-II) were up-regulated, autophagic substrate transporter p62 was down-regulated in QDTS group. It was also found that the expression of SIRT1 and the proportion of p-AMPK (thr172)/AMPK were increased, while the p-mTOR (ser2448)/mTOR ratio was decreased after QDTS treatment in db/db mice, which was consistent with the effect of its active ingredients on the nutrient-sensing signal pathway as reported previously. Therefore, QDTS may prevent the progression of DN by offering the anti-fibrotic effect. The renoprotection is probably attributable to the regulation of nutrient-sensing signal pathways, which activates autophagy.

Abstract Atmospheric-pressure plasma and TiO2 photocatalysis have been widely investigated separately for the management and reduction of microorganisms in aqueous solutions. In this paper, the two methods were combined in order to achieve a more profound understanding of their interactions in disinfection of water contaminated by Escherichia coli. Under water discharges carried out by microplasma jet arrays can result in a rapid inactivation of E. coli cells. The inactivation efficiency is largely dependent on the feed gases used, the plasma treatment time, and the discharge power. Compared to atmospheric-pressure N2, He and air microplasma arrays, O2 microplasma had the highest activity against E. coli cells in aqueous solution, and showed >99.9% bacterial inactivation efficiency within 4 min. Addition of TiO2 photocatalytic film to the plasma discharge reactor significantly enhanced the inactivation efficiency of the O2 microplasma system, decreasing the time required to achieve 99.9% killing of E. coli cells to 1 min. This may be attributed to the enhancement of ROS generation due to high catalytic activity and stability of the TiO2 photocatalyst in the combined plasma-TiO2 systems. Present work demonstrated the synergistic effect of the two agents, which can be correlated in order to maximize treatment efficiency.

Plasma medicine is a relatively new field that investigates potential applications of cold atmospheric-pressure plasmas in bioengineering, such as for bacterial inactivation and degradation of organic molecules in water. In order to enunciate mechanisms of bacterial inactivation at molecular or atomic levels, we investigated the interaction of atmospheric-pressure air microplasmas with amino acids in aqueous solution by using high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). Results show that the oxidation effect of plasma-induced species on the side chains of the amino acids can be categorized into four types, namely hydroxylation, nitration, dehydrogenation and dimerization. In addition, relative activities of amino acids resulting from plasma treatment come in descending order as follows: sulfur-containing carbon-chain amino acids > aromatic amino acids > five-membered ring amino acids > basic carbon-chain amino acids. Since amino acids are building blocks of proteins vital to the growth and reproduction of bacteria, these results provide an insight into the mechanism of bacterial inactivation by plasma.
