IntroductionEfficiently and precisely identifying tomatoes amidst intricate surroundings is essential for advancing the automation of tomato harvesting. Current object detection algorithms are slow and have low recognition accuracy for occluded and small tomatoes.MethodsTo enhance the detection of tomatoes in complex environments, a lightweight greenhouse tomato object detection model named S-YOLO is proposed, based on YOLOv8s with several key improvements: (1) A lightweight GSConv_SlimNeck structure tailored for YOLOv8s was innovatively constructed, significantly reducing model parameters to optimize the model neck for lightweight model acquisition. (2) An improved version of the α-SimSPPF structure was designed, effectively enhancing the detection accuracy of tomatoes. (3) An enhanced version of the β-SIoU algorithm was proposed to optimize the training process and improve the accuracy of overlapping tomato recognition. (4) The SE attention module is integrated to enable the model to capture more representative greenhouse tomato features, thereby enhancing detection accuracy.ResultsExperimental results demonstrate that the enhanced S-YOLO model significantly improves detection accuracy, achieves lightweight model design, and exhibits fast detection speeds. Experimental results demonstrate that the S-YOLO model significantly enhances detection accuracy, achieving 96.60% accuracy, 92.46% average precision (mAP), and a detection speed of 74.05 FPS, which are improvements of 5.25%, 2.1%, and 3.49 FPS respectively over the original model. With model parameters at only 9.11M, the S-YOLO outperforms models such as CenterNet, YOLOv3, YOLOv4, YOLOv5m, YOLOv7, and YOLOv8s, effectively addressing the low recognition accuracy of occluded and small tomatoes.DiscussionThe lightweight characteristics of the S-YOLO model make it suitable for the visual system of tomato-picking robots, providing technical support for robot target recognition and harvesting operations in facility environments based on mobile edge computing.

The alpine meadow located in permafrost is crucial for ecosystem services of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP), which is experiencing precipitation changes in most areas. Water use efficiency (WUE) can quantify the inextricable link between carbon assimilation and water loss in terrestrial ecosystems. However, the temporal variations in WUE and its driving factors across different precipitation years still need to be clarified in alpine meadows on the QTP. Therefore, 4-year carbon and water flux data were used to elucidate the mechanisms behind seasonal and interannual variations in WUE of an alpine meadow in the hinterland of the QTP. Noticeable seasonal variations in WUE were observed during the studied period, with the highest value (1.38±0.38 g C kg−1 H2O) occurring during the mid-growing season (MG, starting around 166 DOY), approximately 2 and 3 times those during the late-growing season (LG, starting around 256 DOY and ending around 282 DOY) and early-growing season (EG, starting around 140 DOY), respectively. Standardized total effects in the structural equation models from NDVI to WUE were highest in all seasons, indicating that NDVI was the primary controlling factor for daily WUE variations. Additionally, energy factors (temperature and solar radiation) also significantly influenced daily WUE variations. The highest mean daily WUE (1.23±0.65 g C kg−1 H2O) was in the mild dry year (2016). However, no significant differences were noted in mean daily WUE in severe dry (2015) and wet (2019) years compared to the normal year (2020) during GS. This can be attributed to the varying sensitivity of carbon assimilation and water loss to biotic and abiotic changes across divergent precipitation years, with WUE exhibiting a greater sensitive to gross primary productivity than to evapotranspiration. These findings suggest that alpine meadows have endured in its harsh environment and have adapted to climatic fluctuations through long-term evolution.

Alpine grasslands are the dominant vegetation of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) and are essential to understanding the mechanism of change in water use efficiency (WUE) in high-cold ecosystems in a changing environment. However, it is still unclear how the WUE of different alpine grasslands respond to changes in precipitation. Therefore, we investigated the variations in growing season WUE and its drivers among different grassland types, including alpine meadow of permafrost (PAM), alpine meadow of seasonal frost (SAM), alpine steppe of permafrost (PAS), and alpine steppe of seasonal frost (SAS), in different precipitation years. The mean growing season WUE was significantly higher for alpine meadow and seasonal frost regions and lower for alpine steppe and permafrost regions. WUE increased significantly in the alpine meadow (PAM and SAM) but decreased (PAS) or varied little (SAS) in the alpine steppe during the period of 1982–2014. Compared to normal years, WUE in the PAS region increased by 22% and 10% in severe and mild dry years, respectively, and decreased by approximately 10% in wet years. For the alpine meadow, WUE decreased more in severe dry years than in mild dry years and increased slightly in wet years. In different precipitation years, WUE for all grassland types was mainly controlled by the vegetation factor. Results suggest that the WUE in alpine grasslands, especially in the PAS region, may decline if the “dry gets wet, wet gets dry” happen over the TP in the future.

This study investigates the structure of soil bacterial communities in the brown mountain soils beneath the deciduous broadleaf forests of Dongling Mountain and their response to soil physicochemical properties. Aiming to provide a scientific basis for soil conservation and sustainable forest development under deciduous broadleaf forests, this research utilized high-throughput sequencing technology to examine the diversity and community structure of bacteria in soil under different tree species, alongside assessing soil physicochemical properties. The results revealed significant differences in nutrient content between the 0–20 cm and 20–40 cm soil layers. Additionally, the N:P in the brown mountain soils of Dongling Mountain was found to be below the national average, indicating potential nitrogen limitation. Dominant bacterial phylum included Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, and Acidobacteria. The study also found that soil bacterial community structure was similar under different tree species at the same depth but varied significantly with soil depth. Furthermore, redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that the available potassium (AK), total nitrogen (TN), and ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) significantly influenced the structural changes in the soil bacterial community. This research highlights the characteristics of soil bacterial community structure beneath deciduous broadleaf forests and its relationship with soil physicochemical properties, offering valuable insights for regional soil ecosystem conservation and forest management.

Urban forest soil is often disturbed by frequent human activity. Organic mulching is effective for improving soil quality; however, the effects of organic mulching on soil bacterial communities in urban forests are still largely unexplored. This study evaluated how organic mulching changed the urban forest soil bacterial community through an incubation experiment. Four treatments were applied: (1) no organic mulch (CK); (2) wood chips alone (5 g, Mw); (3) wood compost alone (5 g, Mc); and (4) wood chips + wood compost (This mulch was divided into two layers, i.e., the upper layer of wood chips (2.5 g) and the lower layer wood compost (2.5 g, Mw+c).) We found significant differences in the soil physicochemical properties under organic mulching after incubation. Overall, organic mulching can alter soil bacterial community structure. Soil alkali-hydrolyzable nitrogen, soil organic carbon, soil total nitrogen, and carbon-nitrogen ratio were the main factors affecting soil microbial community structures. Soil bacterial groups under organic mulching treatments mainly acted on the C and N cycling of functional pathways in soil. This study suggests that organic mulching could maintain the development of soil bacteria, which establishes a theoretical foundation for enhancing the microbiological environment of urban forest soils.

Streetlamp light is inevitable in the night landscape of a city and may affect the phenology of newly planted ornamental plants, but it has rarely been fully examined. Newly transplanted ornamental plants probably suffer periodic shocks, which mainly result from the inefficient reuse of internal nutrients for new growth. Exponential nutrient loading (ENL) is well known for its ability to overcome transplant shocks by promoting retranslocation for the reuse of strengthened nutrients from internal reserves in precultured seedlings. Transplantation to urbanized lands is distinct from that of montane areas; this is mainly due to a high frequency of exposure to the artificial illumination of night lighting. It is suspected that this lighting modifies vegetative phenology and generates potential risks by increasing reliance on internal nutrient retranslocation. In this study, Podocarpus macrophyllus seedlings were cultured with ENL at low and high rates of nitrogen (N) deliveries (40 and 120 mg N seedling−1, respectively), and the high-rate treatment was identified as being able to trap seedlings within toxic states. A labeled 15N isotope was pulsed to transplanted seedlings exposed to simulated light qualities in red, green, and blue light spectra. The seedlings harvested at one month showed rare responses to the interactive spectra and preculture treatments, but most of them responded to the low-rate N preculture treatment with stronger abilities in terms of the reuse of internal N and the synthesizing of photosynthetic pigments. In conclusion, it was verified that night light enforces the effect on newly transplanted plants; the red light invoked internal N for reuse, and the blue light promoted the uptake of the current N. The internal N reserve established through preculture ENL rarely made a contribution to the night light effect, except for the enhancement of height growth in the red light. The red light spectrum was recommended for the exposure of newly transplanted seedlings due to its effect on the enhancement of the retranslocation of internal N and the induction of a steady state of uptake from the current N input.

The importance of forest floor plants (herbs and mosses) and understory communities on soil C dynamics has been grossly understudied in forest ecosystems; however, there is currently very little knowledge on the impact of forest floor vegetation composition on soil organic C (SOC) accumulation and the microbial metabolic processes. To bridge this gap of knowledge, a forest floor vegetation-removal experiment involving nonvascular mosses (Pleurozium schreberi (PS); Rhizomnium tuomikoskii (RT); and Hylocomiastrum pyrenaicum (HP)) and vascular sedges (Carex sp., CS) was conducted in a subalpine coniferous forest on the eastern edge of Tibetan Plateau, to investigate the associations of different forest floor vegetation communities with mineral soil C accumulation and microbial physiology (C use efficiency (CUE) and microbial biomass turnover). Soils beneath the forest floor vegetative communities differed in soil C and nitrogen (N) concentrations and had distinctively different microbial community structure and physiology. Compared to bare soils, sedge soils had significantly greater SOC and dissolved organic C (DOC) accumulation, greater microbial DNA, biomass C and phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) concentrations, and higher microbial CUE and shorter microbial biomass turnover time. While effects of mosses differed among species, P. schreberi had similar effects as sedges, but the effects of H. pyrenaicum and R. tuomikoskii were minimal. Relative to bare soil, P. schreberi and Carex sp. soils were 61.5% and 51.6% higher in microbial CUE and had an obviously shorter microbial biomass turnover time. Variations in the level of DOC and PLFAs (rather than their portion relative to SOC) were the most important regulators of microbial CUE and biomass turnover rate in soils with different forest floor vegetation covers. These results highlight how differences in soil organic matter quality that are directly related to the forest floor vegetation community influence the microbial CUE and biomass turnover and the long-term soil C dynamics.

In order to improve the yield of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the co-fermentation conditions of Enterococcus faecium AB157 and Saccharomyces cerevisiae SC-125 were optimized by one-factor-at-a-time method and response surface methodology (RSM). Simultaneously, the enzyme activity of glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) was analyzed under optimal conditions in co-fermentation and single strain fermentation systems, and the mechanism of high GABA yield was explored by adding cell-free supernatant (CFS). The optimization results showed that when the overall quantity of inoculum was 2% (V/V), the optimal co-fermentation conditions were as follows: The fermentation temperature was 35 ℃, the inoculum proportions of E. faecium AB157 and S. cerevisiae SC-125 was 5:1 (V/V), and the L-monosodium glutamate concentration was 12 g/L with shaking fermentation for 96 h. In addition, the yield of 6.55 g/L GABA was 1.78 times higher than in single strain fermentation systems. The GAD enzyme activity analysis showed that co-fermentation could significantly improve GAD enzyme activity. Meanwhile, GABA yield could be significantly increased by adding CFS of E. faecium AB157 or S. cerevisiae SC-125. This study served as a theoretical foundation for the discussion of the co-fermentation of E. faecium and S. cerevisiae to increase GABA yield and the mechanism of high GABA yield.

The reserve of litter is expected to be reduced on the forest floors of pine plantations dually for the prevention of high risks of forest fires and with a more practical probability of reuse. Lignin and cellulose are the two key constitutive components in litter residues that account for the highest proportion of carbon but are the last to be fully decomposed. The existing trials started examining the mechanisms behind decomposing these two components in response to the combined driving forces of microclimatic factors, forest structure, and stand properties. However, the results were mostly limited to a local-scale ecosystem, and the evidence was reported to be highly scattered across varied conditions globally. Awareness about the combined effects of the driving forces behind the lignin and cellulose contents in the litter of plantations on a large scale is still scarce. In this study, a total of 60 Pinus tabuliformis Carr. plantations (40-year-old) were investigated for their litter quality, regional meteorological factors, soil properties, and stand structure in a provincial area across Liaoning, northeast China. High lignin (40%–43%) and cellulose contents (15%–20%) were found to be located mainly in stands around the biggest city of Shenyang. Rainfall was a key factor that determined the decomposition, but neither the forest structure nor soil nutrient content generated direct effects on the two litter components. The combined factors of low soil pH (~5.8) and high rainfall (~3.0 mm per day) together mainly accounted for the promotion of natural litter decomposition.

Soil bacterial and fungal community communities play significant ecological functions in mountain ecosystems. However, it is not clear how topographic factors and soil physicochemical properties influence changes in microbial community structure and diversity. This study aims to investigate how altitude and slope orientation affect soil physicochemical properties, soil microbial communities, and their contributing factors. The assessment was conducted using Illumina MiSeq sequencing in various altitude gradients and on slopes with different aspects (shady slopes and sunny slopes) in the subalpine meadow of Dongling Mountain, Beijing. Topographical factors had a significant effect on soil physicochemical properties: the primary factors determining the structure of microbial communities are total potassium (TK), ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N), and soil organic carbon (SOC). There was no significant change in the diversity of the bacterial community, whereas the diversity of the fungal community displayed a single-peaked trend. The effect of slope orientation on microbial communities was not as significant as the effect of elevation on them. The number of bacterial communities with significant differences showed a unimodal trend, while the number of fungal communities showed a decreasing trend. The co-occurrence network of fungal communities exhibits greater intricacy than that of bacterial communities, and bacterial communities are more complex in soils with sunny slopes compared to soils with shady slopes, and the opposite is true for fungal communities. The identification of the main factors that control soil microbial diversity and composition in this study, provided the groundwork for investigating the soil microbial response and adaptation to environmental changes in subalpine meadows.

(1) Background: To simulate the micro-vibration environment of the star sensor mounting surface, a multi-dimensional micro-vibration simulator based on the Gough–Stewart platform was designed, which could effectively reproduce space six-dimensional acceleration; (2) Methods: Firstly, the integrated design of a gravity unloading system and micro-vibration simulation platform was adopted, and the first six natural frequencies and mode diagrams of the simulator were obtained by modal analysis. Then, the complete dynamic equation of the simulator was established, and the relationship between the acceleration of the upper platform and the driving force of the legs was deduced, which was verified by co-simulation. Finally, the whole machine test was carried out using the frequency response function based on the actual simulator without multiple iterations; (3) Results: The test results show that the micro-vibration simulator can reproduce space six-dimensional acceleration, with an output bandwidth of 5–300 Hz, and maximum error of 9.19%; (4) Conclusions: The micro-vibration simulator platform has the characteristics of a highly precise, large analog bandwidth and takes up less space, is conducive to transportation, and can accurately reproduce the six-degree-of-freedom space micro-vibrations for the star sensor.

Studying both soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) storages in different climate zones and their relationship with climatic factors is of great significance for understanding soil fertility and predicting global climate change. Climate influences soil minerals, which are important for soil organic carbon (SOC) and N retention. However, there are few studies on SOC and soil total nitrogen (STN) storage in different climatic zones, and of the effects of soil oxidation minerals on SOC and STN storage. We measured the storage of SOC and STN and the content of oxidizable minerals in soils from different climatic regions, then obtained climate data from the China Meteorological Data Service Center, and finally investigated the effects of climate factors and soil oxides minerals on SOC and STN. The results showed that climatic factors (mean annual temperature—MAT, mean annual precipitation—MAP, and ≥10 °C mean annual cumulative temperature—MACT) had significant effects on SOC and STN content, and there was significant epistatic clustering of SOC and STN contents in different climatic zones. When MAT, MAP, and MACT increased, SOC and STN storage showed a trend of increasing and then decreasing, and both SOC and STN storages were largest in the middle temperate zone. The content of soil metal oxides (Al2O3, Fe2O3, Na2O, MgO, CaO, K2O, and TiO2) showed significant positive correlation with climatic factors (MAT, MAP, and MACT). The contents of Al2O3, Fe2O3, CaO, K2O, and TiO2 showed significant negative correlation with SOC and STN contents. In summary, our results showed that, although soil metal oxides (SMO) have a protective effect on SOC and STN to some extent, they do not change the influence of climatic factors on SOC and STN storage.

The glass solidification technology has been studied by many researchers for decades to handle the trouble of high-level liquid waste (HLLW). However, the widely used joule-heated ceramic melter technology also has disadvantages such as complicated processes, easy deposition of heavy metals, and low thermal efficiency. To deal with these problems, we proposed a new glass solidification device based on ultra-high power laser heating to handle HLLW. HLLW was mixed with borosilicate glass, and melting, clarifying, and annealing processes were carried out in a crucible using laser heat. We test the properties of the borosilicate glass solidified body and then analyze it. The results show that the borosilicate glass beads were completely melted and other indicators are in line with the requirements. As a result, the new device that is heated by an ultra-high laser is feasible for vitrification of HLLW and has the potential to overcome the disadvantages of traditional solidification technology. This research is helpful to explore new glass solidification processes.

In recent years, high-quality surfaces with large areas and curvatures have been increasingly used in engineering, but the precision machining and inspection of such surfaces is a particular challenge. Surface machining equipment needs to have a large working space, high flexibility, and motion accuracy to meet the demands of micron-scale precision machining. However, meeting these requirements may result in extremely large equipment sizes. To solve this problem, an eight-degree-of-freedom redundant manipulator with one linear and seven rotational joints is designed to assist in the machining described in this paper. The configuration parameters of the manipulator are optimized by an improved multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm to ensure that the working space of the manipulator completely covers the working surface and that the size of the manipulator is small. In order to improve the smoothness and accuracy of manipulator motion on large surface areas, an improved trajectory planning strategy for a redundant manipulator is proposed. The idea of the improved strategy is to pre-process the motion path first and then use a combination of the clamping weighted least-norm method and the gradient projection method to plan the trajectory, while adding a reverse planning step to solve the singularity problem. The resulting trajectories are smoother than those planned by the general method. The feasibility and practicality of the trajectory planning strategy are verified through simulation.

Three series of artemisinin-isatin hybrids 8a-i, 10a-c and 11a-e were designed, synthesized and evaluated for their antiproliferative activity against breast cancer cells (MCF-7, MDA-MB-231 and doxorubicin-resistant MCF-7 (MCF-7/DOX)), as well as the cytotoxicity towards normal MCF-10A breast cells. The preliminary results showed that a significant part of the synthesized hybrids (IC50: 20.7–99.9 µM) were active against both drug-sensitive and doxorubicin-resistant breast cancer cell lines. The structure–activity relationship illustrated that the linker between artemisinin and isatin moieties as well as the substituents on C-3 and C-5 position of isatin motif had great influence on the activity. In particular, hybrids 11c,d were found to be most active against all tested breast cancer cell lines, and their activity was not inferior to that of doxorubicin. Therefore, hybrids 11c,d could serve as useful templates for the development of novel anti-breast cancer agents.

In this article, the response characteristics of multicomponent induction logging (MCIL) tool in anisotropic formation are analyzed. To solve the 1-D MCIL problems, we use a planar layered anisotropic medium (PLAM) Green's function (PLAMGF) method which is derived from the layered-medium Green's function (LMGF) and combined with MCIL excitation source and anisotropic formation environment, and then use it to investigate the equivalence of the MCIL tool responses in two models, i.e. the microscopic thin interbed formation and macroscopic anisotropic formation, and also analyze the effects of shoulder bed and formation dip on MCIL tools. In addition, in order to solve the complex 3-D problems, such as the effects of borehole, tool eccentricity and invasion on the tool response, we use the finite element method (FEM) based on a proposed new meshing scheme to simulate and analyze. This new meshing scheme includes two aspects: the use of cylindrical hexahedron element and the flexible meshing strategy combined with domain decomposition. Finally, some key detection performances of coaxial coils and coplanar coils of MCIL tool are studied. Numerical experiments are conducted to prove the effectiveness of our proposed method and provide the detailed results of the aforementioned aspects.

Extreme precipitation events can lead to severe mountain hazards, and they have therefore received widespread attention. The study of extreme precipitation can be hindered by the insufficient number and uneven distribution of rain gauge stations, especially in mountainous areas with complex terrain. In this study, the daily precipitation data of three gridded precipitation products (Integrated Multi-satellite Retrievals for GPM, IMERG; Multi-Source Weighted-Ensemble Precipitation, MSWEP; and Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission, TRMM) were compared with rain gauge observations at 62 ground stations from 2001 to 2016 over the Hengduan Mountain region in China. Deviations between the gridded and ground precipitation datasets were compared using four daily heavy rainfall sequences. Various extreme precipitation indices were used to evaluate the performance of selected precipitation products. The results show that IMERG and TRMM are better than MSWEP in characterizing extreme precipitation. The accuracy of these three products in detecting heavy precipitation varied with altitude gradient. All products provided more accurate estimates of heavy precipitation in higher-altitude areas than in lower-altitude areas. Notably, they are more applicable for heavy precipitation detection in subalpine or alpine regions, and there are still uncertainties in capturing the accurate characterization of extreme precipitation at low (

Lung cancer is the most common malignancy and leads to around one-quarter of all cancer deaths. Great advances have been achieved in the treatment of lung cancer with novel anticancer agents and improved technology. However, morbidity and mortality rates remain extremely high, calling for an urgent need to develop novel anti–lung cancer agents. 1,2,3-Triazole could be readily interact with diverse enzymes and receptors in organisms through weak interaction. 1,2,3-Triazole can not only be acted as a linker to tether different pharmacophores but also serve as a pharmacophore. This review aims to summarize the recent advances in 1,2,3-triazole–containing compounds with anti–lung cancer potential, and their structure–activity relationship (SAR) together with mechanisms of action is also discussed to pave the way for the further rational development of novel anti–lung cancer candidates.

Di-nitrogen (N2)-fixing plants are crucial for vegetation development following glacial retreat; however, there is currently limited understanding of how the shifting of N2-fixing and non N2-fixing plant groups may influence the stoichiometric composition of the developing plant community and associated soils. Carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) concentrations and elementary stoichiometry were investigated in soil and the N2-fixing and non-N2-fixing plant communities across a 127-yr glacial primary succession chronosequence on the eastern slope of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. Soil organic C (SOC), total N (TN), and available P (AP) gradually increased along succession, but total P (TP) was greatest at the 37-yr site, resulting in an increasing trend of soil N:P and a decreasing trend of N:AP ratios along the chronosequence. N2-fixing species had higher foliar N and P concentrations than non-N2-fixing species and exhibited a higher leaf N:P ratios in early stages (37 yr and younger) of the succession. Elementary concentration and C, N, P stoichiometry in plant leaves were strongly associated with both N2-fixing and non-N2 fixing plant biomasses, while those in soils were related only with the biomass of non-N2 fixing species. The community-weighted leaf N:P ratios increased from 14.0 at 7-yr to 19.9 at 59-yr and then decreased to 12.9 at 127-yr after glacial retreat, suggests the ecosystem as a whole is not N- or P-limited at the beginning of primary succession, but may become P-limited at the middle stages and then shift towards N limitation at the late successional stages. The results confirm that both N2-fixing and non-N2-fixing species can overcome N limitation in the early primary succession and highlights the different roles of pioneer N2-fixing and non-N2-fixing species in mediating vegetation and soil C, N and P stoichiometry with primary succession following glacial retreat.

The development of functional fermented beverages enriched with γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) has been pursued because of the health benefits of GABA; however, few studies have described GABA production by yeast. Therefore, this study aimed to produce fermented apple beverages enriched with GABA produced by Saccharomyces cerevisiae SC125. Golden Delicious apples were fermented by S. cerevisiae SC125 to produce a novel functional beverage; commercial yeast was used as the control. The GABA, organic acid, and volatile compound content during the fermentation process was investigated by high-performance liquid chromatography and headspace solid-phase microextraction/gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. A yield of 898.35 ± 10.10 mg/L GABA was achieved by the efficient bioconversion of L-monosodium glutamate. Notably, the S. cerevisiae SC125-fermented beverage produced several unique volatile compounds, such as esters, alcohols, 6-decenoic acid, and 3-hydroxy−2-butanone, and showed significantly enhanced contents of organic acids, including malic acids, citric acid, and quinic acid. Sensory analysis demonstrated that the S. cerevisiae SC125-fermented apple beverage had improved aroma, flavor, and overall acceptability. In conclusion, a fermented functional apple beverage containing GABA was efficiently produced using S. cerevisiae SC125.

Owing to the excellent thermal properties of graphene, silicon carbide (SiC) combined with graphene is expected to obtain more outstanding thermal performance and structural stability at high temperatures. Herein, the thermal conductivity of graphene/SiC heterostructures (GS-Hs) with different structures and atomic orientations was calculated through non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulations. The temperature dependence and size effect on the thermal transport properties of GS-Hs were systematically investigated and discussed. The continuous addition of graphene layers did not always have a positive effect. The thermal transport performance of GS-Hs approached the intrinsic thermal conductivity of SiC when the interaction gradually decreased with the distance between SiC and graphene. Studies on temperature and size dependence show opposite trends. The enhancement effect of graphene was limited at small distances. The thermal conductivity of GS-Hs had a negative correlation with temperature and increased with the system size. Meanwhile, the thermal conductivity of GS-Hs was predicted to be 156.25 (W·m−1·K−1) at the macroscopic scale via extrapolation. The model established in this paper is also applicable to other material simulation processes, as long as the corresponding parameters and potential functions are available. This study will provide inspiration for the optimized design and preparation of highly efficient cladding materials in nuclear reactors.

Urban green space soil heavy metal pollution seriously affected the lives of residents, and soil environmental quality data is important for urban planning and functional construction. In this study, the concentrations of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr),copper (Cu), mercury (Hg), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) in 148 soil samples collected from green spaces in Beijing City, China were measured. The mean concentrations were 7.60, 0.29, 50.32, 31.61, 1.53, 23.89, 29.68, and 76.53 mg/kg, respectively. With the exception of Ni, the concentrations of the seven other heavy metals were greater than their background values. Additionally, the concentration of Hg was 3.06 times greater than the Grade 2 value (0.5 mg/kg) of Environmental quality standard for soils in China (GB 15618-1995), also exceeded the limit value (1–1.5 mg/kg) for Hg in soil of European Union (86/278/EEC). Soil pollution assessment was carried out using the geoaccumulation index (Igeo), the $I_{{\rm geo}}$ value of Cd and Hg were 0.70 and 4.11, respectively. It suggested that, the green space soil of Beijing was slightly polluted by Cd and seriously polluted by Hg, which posed great harm to public health. A positive correlation exists between Cu and Hg, Pb, and Zn, as well as between Hg and Pb, suggesting the metals in the green space soils originated from similar sources. Multivariate statistical analysis, such as principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA), were adopted to identify heavy metal sources. The results suggest that the sources of heavy metals in Beijing green space soils differ. Cd, Cu, Hg, and Zn derived from vehicular transport; Cd and Cr originated from industrial activities and phosphate fertilisers; As and Ni mainly contributed by parent materials. The spatial distribution characteristics of the eight heavy metals varied greatly, and the presence of these metals was strongly associated with anthropogenic activities.

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) is experiencing severe permafrost degradation, which can affect the hydrological and biogeochemical processes. Yet how the permafrost change affects riverine carbon export remains uncertain. Here, we investigated the seasonal variations of dissolved inorganic and organic carbon (DIC and DOC) during flow seasons in a watershed located in the central QTP permafrost region. The results showed that riverine DIC concentrations (27.81 ± 9.75 mg L−1) were much higher than DOC concentrations (6.57 ± 2.24 mg L−1). DIC and DOC fluxes were 3.95 and 0.94 g C m−2 year−1, respectively. DIC concentrations increased from initial thaw (May) to freeze period (October), while DOC concentrations remained relatively steady. Daily dissolved carbon concentrations were more closely correlated with baseflow than that with total runoff. Spatially, average DIC and DOC concentrations were positively correlated with vegetation coverage but negatively correlated with bare land coverage. DIC concentrations increased with the thawed and frozen depths due to increased soil interflow, more thaw-released carbon, more groundwater contribution, and possibly more carbonate weathering by soil CO2 formed carbonic acid. The DIC and DOC fluxes increased with thawed depth and decreased with frozen layer thickness. The seasonality of riverine dissolved carbon export was highly dependent on active layer thawing and freezing processes, which highlights the importance of changing permafrost for riverine carbon export. Future warming in the QTP permafrost region may alter the quantity and mechanisms of riverine carbon export.

Mulching is a widely employed soil management practice. The mulches used have variable effects on the soil properties and plant growth. In China, mulches are used to cover bare soil at a few places in landscapes, where most of the soil is uncovered, especially in tree pits. As to improve our understanding on the effect of various mulches on soil properties and tree growth after two years of the treatment justifying its implication in soil fertility and tree growth. A comparison study was conducted to determine the effects of inorganic (cobblestone-CB; water permeable brick-WPB), organic (pine bark-PB; green waste compost-GWC), and living (turf grass-TG) mulches on soil physical and chemical properties at three different depths (0-10 cm, 10-20 cm, and 20-40cm), and on tree growth (Sophora japonica) in urban tree pits. Soil moisture was measured once a month in 2015.The soil samples were collected from the tree pits two years after mulching and used to evaluate the physical and chemical properties. Further, trunk diameter and tree height were determined once a year. During the most months, all types of mulches significantly affected the moisture content of the soil at all the depths analyzed. In July and August, however, the moisture content of PB and TG treated soil decreased when compared with that of unmulched bare soil. Two years after mulching, the bulk density of the soil treated with PB, GWC, and TG was significantly affected at10-20 cm, with GWC exhibiting a relatively better effect. The treatments with PB, GWC, and TG also improved the total porosity, macroporosity, and microporosity of the soil at lower depths. Further, WPB worsened the bulk density and porosity of the soil, elevating the pH at lower depths. The organic matter, total N, mineral N, available P, and available K contents of the soil at lower depths increased when mulched with organic material. Turf grass significantly increased only the total N and available K at 0-10 and 10-20 cm. There was no significant difference in the soil properties among the treatments at 20-40 cm. Furthermore, the trunk diameter and tree height were not affected by the mulches two years after mulching. In conclusion, organic mulches especially GWC, not only increased soil fertility significantly but improved soil physical characters (0-10 cm depth) comparing to other mulches, are suitable to cover bare soil in urban tree pits.

This research was conducted to compare chemical and microbiological properties during aerobic composting (AC) and vermicomposting (VC) of green waste. Relative to AC, VC significantly decreased the pH and lignin and cellulose contents, and significantly increased the electrical conductivity and total N and available P contents. For AC, BIrii41_norank (order Myxococcales) was the major bacterial genus at 30 d and again became dominant genus from 90-150 d, with relative abundances of 2.88% and 4.77-5.19%, respectively; at 45 d and 60 d, the dominant bacterial genus was Nitrosomonadaceae_uncultured (order Nitrosomonadales) with relative abundances of 2.83-7.17%. For VC, the dominant bacterial genus was BIrii41_norank (except at 45 d), which accounted for 2.11-7.96% of the total reads. The dominant fungal class was Sordariomycetes in AC (relative abundances 39.2-80.6%) and VC (relative abundances 42.1-69.5%). The abundances of microbial taxa and therefore the bacterial and fungal community structures differed between VC and AC. The quality of the green waste compost product was higher with VC than with AC. These results will also help to achieve further composting technology breakthroughs in reducing the composting time and improving compost quality.

The effects of adding the biosurfactant rhamnolipid, the lignolytic and cellulolytic fungus Phanerochete chrysosporium, and the free-living nitrogen-fixing bacterium Azotobacter chrococcum on vermicomposting of green waste with Eisenia fetida was investigated. The addition of rhamnolipid and/or either microorganism alone or in all combinations significantly increased E. fetida growth rate, the number of E. fetida juveniles and cocoons, the population densities of cellulolytic fungi and Azotobacter bacteria, and cellulase and urease activities in the vermicomposts. The quality of the final vermicompost (in terms of electrical conductivity, nutrient content, C/N ratio, humic acid content, lignin and cellulose contents, and phytotoxicity to germinating seeds) was enhanced by addition of rhamnolipid and/or microorganisms. The physical characteristics of vermicomposts produced with rhamnolipid and/or microorganisms were acceptable for agricultural application. The best quality vermicompost was obtained with the combined addition of P. chrysosporium, A. chrococcum, and rhamnolipid.

A laboratory microcosm experiment was conducted to determine whether the earthworm Eisenia fetida could survive in a saline soil from a field site in North China, and an experiment using response surface methodology was conducted at that field site to quantify the effects of E. fetida and green waste compost (GWC) on the salt content of the soil. The microcosm results showed that E. fetida survived in GWC-amended saline soil and increased the contents of humic acid, available N, and available P in the GWC-amended soil. The pyrolysis of willow samples from various plant positions was analysed using thermogravimetry-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR). The results indicate that pyrolysis can be divided into four stages. The first stage from 30 to 120°C involves free evaporation of moisture, with a mass loss of 5%. The second stage from 120 to 200°C involves the pyrolysis of hemicellulose and unstable cellulose, with a mass loss of 4%. The third stage is from 200 to 400°C, with a weight loss of 60%, in which the chemical components of wood thermally decompose and emit heat, carbon dioxide, and so on. In the final stage, which occurs above 400°C, the pyrolysis of lignin and charring of cellulose occur, with a mass loss of 10%. Moreover, in FTIR, the samples exhibit the highest absorbance during the main pyrolysis phase, from which wood vinegar ingredients mainly arise, including CO2, H2O, CO, and small amounts of hydrocarbons, alcohols, phenols, acids, esters, and aromatic compounds. Additionally, leaves are decomposed more thoroughly before the main pyrolysis phase, whereas decomposition of branches occurs fullest during this phase. Finally, we put forward some suggestions to support further research on conversion of willow into wood vinegar products.

The ability of the following four organic amendments to ameliorate saline soil in coastal northern China was investigated from April 2010 to October 2012 in a field experiment: green waste compost (GWC), sedge peat (SP), furfural residue (FR), and a mixture of GWC, SP and FR (1∶1∶1 by volume) (GSF). Compared to a non-amended control (CK), the amendments, which were applied at 4.5 kg organic matter m(-3), dramatically promoted plant growth; improved soil structure; increased the cation exchange capacity (CEC), organic carbon, and available nutrients; and reduced the salt content, electrical conductivity (EC), and exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP). At the end of the experiment in soil amended with GSF, bulk density, EC, and ESP had decreased by 11, 87, and 71%, respectively, and total porosity and organic carbon had increased by 25 and 96% respectively, relative to the CK. The GSF treatment resulted in a significantly lower Na(+)+K(+) content than the other treatments. CEC and the contents of available N, P, and K were significantly higher in the GSF-treated soil than in the CK and were the highest in all treatments. The FR treatment resulted in the lowest pH value and Ca(2+) concentration, which decreased by 8% and 39%, respectively, relative to the CK. Overall, the results indicate that a combination of green waste compost, sedge peat and furfural residue (GSF treatment) has substantial potential for ameliorating saline soils in the coastal areas of northern China, and it works better than each amendment alone. Utilization of GWC and FR can be an alternative organic amendment to substitute the nonrenewable SP in saline soil amelioration.

The changes in the structural characteristics of biomass residues during pyrolysis and composting were investigated. The biomass residues particles were prepared by pyrolysing at temperatures ranging from 350 to 400. For soilless production of the ornamental plant Anthurium andraeanum, pure sphagnum peat moss (P) has traditionally been used as the growing medium. This use of P must be reduced, however, because P is an expensive and nonrenewable resource. The current study investigated the use of biomass residues as substitutes for P in A. andraeanum production. Plants were grown for 15 months in 10 soilless media that contained different proportions of pyrolysed corn cobs (PC), composted corn cobs (C), pyrolysed garden wastes (PG), and P. Although the media altered the plant nutrient content, A. andraeanum growth, development, and yield were similar with media consisting of 50% P+50% PC, 50% P+35% PC+15% PG, and 100% P. This finding indicates that, when pyrolysed, organic wastes, which are otherwise an environmental problem, can be used to reduce the requirement for peat in the soilless culture of A. andraeanum.

Peat mined from endangered wetland ecosystems is generally used as a component in soilless potting media in horticulture but is a costly and non-renewable natural resource. The objective of this work was to study the feasibility of replacing peat with different percentages (0, 10, 30, 50, 70, 90, and 100%) of composted green waste (CGW) as growth media for the production of the ornamental plant Calathea insignis. Compared with 100% peat media, media containing CGW had improved physical and chemical characteristics to achieve the acceptable ranges. Moreover, CGW addition had increased the stability (i.e., reduced the decomposition rates) of growth media mixtures, as indicated by comparison of particle-size distribution at the start and end of a 7-month greenhouse experiment. Addition of CGW also supported increased plant growth (biomass production, root morphology, nutrient contents, and photosynthetic pigment contents). The physical and chemical characteristics of growth media and plant growth were best with a medium containing 70% CGW and were better in a medium with 100% CGW than in one with 100% peat media. These results indicate that CGW is a viable alternative to peat for the cultivation of Calathea insignis.

Objective. To study the reproductive hormones, semen quality, psychology, and sexual function of childbearing age men after recovery from Corona Virus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) infection. Materials and Methods. We recruited 387 men of childbearing age who recovered from COVID-19 infection and underwent prepregnancy health checks at the Reproductive Center of Shandong Maternal and Child Health Hospital from January to March 2023 as study subjects. Routine semen analysis and reproductive hormones were performed. The clinical symptoms, anxiety, depression, erectile function, and premature ejaculation questionnaire were investigated during the COVID-19 infection period. A control group of 226 men of childbearing age who were not infected with COVID-19 between August 2022 and October 2022 were selected based on questionnaire responses, reproductive hormones, and semen parameters. Results. The main clinical symptoms during COVID-19 infection of the 387 research subjects were fever (342/387, 88.37%), muscle pain (155/387, 40.05%), anosmia (124/387, 32.04%), cough (106/387, 27.39%), throat pain (53/387, 13.70%), nausea and vomiting (16/387, 4.13%), and testicular discomfort (5/387, 1.29%). The rates of anxiety and depression were 11.37% (44/387) and 32.82% (127/387), respectively; erectile dysfunction (ED) and premature ejaculation (PE) of the research subjects were accounted for 32.30% (125/387) and 6.98% (27/387). The IEF-5 score (P<0:001) decreased significantly compared to the control group, while the PHQ-9 score (P<0:001), the rate of increased ED (P<0:001), and the rate of depression increased (P<0:001). There were statistically significant differences in liquefaction time (P<0:05), the progressive sperm motility (P<0:05), total sperm motility (P<0:05), the rates of progressive sperm motility <32% (P<0:05), and total sperm motility <40% (P<0:05) between the 1 month, the 2 months after recovery from COVID-19 and controls. Circular cell counts (P<0:05) at 2 and 3 months were lower than in the controls. No changes in reproductive hormones before and after recovery from infection. Conclusion. COVID-19 infection exacerbates depression and ED. It has a sustained effect on sperm motility and liquefaction time in men. The effects of COVID-19 infection on semen persist for approximately 2 months, with recovery occurring in the third month. Aim: This study aims to explore the role of soluble programmed cell death protein 1 (sPD-1) in individuals with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) undergoing treatment with drug-eluting beads transarterial chemoembolization (D-TACE). Additionally, we aim to assess the potential utility of sPD-1 for determining the optimal timing for combining D-TACE with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). Materials and Methods: A total of 44 HCC patients eligible for D-TACE and 55 healthy volunteers were enrolled in this study. Three milliliters of peripheral venous blood from the patients were collected on the day before D-TACE and 3, 7, and 30 days after D-TACE, respectively, for the assay of sPD-1. The relationships between sPD-1 levels, clinical features, outcomes, and the fluctuation of sPD-1 during treatment were analyzed. Results: The initial sPD-1 levels in patients were found to be significantly higher than those in the control group. Although the initial sPD-1 levels displayed a decreasing trend with an increase in BCLC stage, no significant differences were observed among patients at different BCLC stages. The sPD-1 level on day 3 after D-TACE was similar to that on day 7 after D-TACE and significantly lower than the initial level. The sPD-1 level on day 30 after D-TACE was significantly higher than that on day 3 and day 7 after D-TACE and nearly returned to the initial level before D-TACE. Conclusion: The level of sPD-1 was found to be significantly elevated in patients with HCC. However, further research is deemed necessary to fully understand the role of sPD-1 as a potential biomarker in the initiation, progression, and prognosis of HCC. The decrease in sPD-1 following D-TACE suggests that immune effector cells might potentially be reduced, as well as immune function weakened, highlighting the need to avoid the prompt administration of ICIs after D-TACE. Objective: To assess the efficacy of left bundle branch pacing (LBBP) combined with either sacubitril/valsartan or enalapril in the treatment of chronic heart failure (CHF). Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 138 patients with CHF admitted to Dazhou Central Hospital between June 2020 and June 2022 to extract clinical data. We divided the data into two treatment groups for the analysis: 71 patients received LBBP combined with sacubitril/valsartan treatment (sacubitril/valsartan group), and 67 received LBBP combined with enalapril treatment (enalapril group). The levels of cardiac and cardiopulmonary function indicators, levels of myocardial injury markers, and the scores of the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ) before and after the treatment were compared between the two groups. Results: After six months of treatment, patients in the sacubitril/valsartan group had lower myocardial injury markers, higher cardiopulmonary function indicators, and lower MLHFQ scores (P<0.05). Conclusions: In CHF patients, the combination of LBBP with sacubitril/valsartan had a better therapeutic effect compared to LBBP with enalapril, with more effective improvement of the cardiopulmonary function, reduction of myocardial injury, and improvement in quality of life.
