Abstract Wheat grain starch content displays large variations within different pearling fractions, which affecting the processing quality of corresponding flour, while the underlying mechanism on starch gradient formation is unclear. Here, we show that wheat caryopses acquire sugar through the transfer of cells (TCs), inner endosperm (IE), outer endosperm (OE), and finally aleurone (AL) via micro positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT). To obtain integrated information on spatial transcript distributions, developing caryopses are laser microdissected into AL, OE, IE, and TC. Most genes encoding carbohydrate transporters are upregulated or specifically expressed, and sugar metabolites are more highly enriched in the TC group than in the AL group, in line with the PET-CT results. Genes encoding enzymes in sucrose metabolism, such as sucrose synthase, beta-fructofuranosidase, glucose-1-phosphate adenylyltransferase show significantly lower expression in AL than in OE and IE, indicating that substrate supply is crucial for the formation of starch gradients. Furthermore, the low expressions of gene encoding starch synthase contribute to low starch content in AL. Our results imply that transcriptional regulation represents an important means of impacting starch distribution in wheat grains and suggests breeding targets for enhancing specially pearled wheat with higher quality.

Abstract Gypsification is a common problem in weathered calcareous relics. In previous studies, the solutions of barium hydroxide in water and methanol were used as protectants for gypsification calcareous relics and showed significant differences in permeability. In this study, the underlying reasons for permeability differences between these two solutions were investigated using optical microscopy, ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometry, X-ray diffractometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, the phenolphthalein test and physical property characterizations. The results indicated that the permeability differences were primarily caused by the solutions’ reactivity. Specifically, owing to the high reactivity of barium hydroxide in water, it reacted rapidly with atmospheric CO2 and gypsum (the weathering product) to generate barium carbonate, barium sulfate and calcium hydroxide precipitates. These precipitates hindered the penetration of solution into weathered relics. In contrast, barium hydroxide in methanol did not react with atmospheric CO2 or weathered relics, which also kept the solution in a liquid state during the infiltration process. Therefore, the solution of barium hydroxide in methanol exhibited high permeability. Based on the above findings, this study is meaningful for applying barium protectants in the conservation of gypsification calcareous relics.

Abstract Background This study aims to investigate the influencing factors of vascular calcification in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients and its relationship with long-term prognosis. Methods This retrospective cohort study included chronic kidney disease patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis at the Peritoneal Dialysis Center of Beijing Luhu Hospital, Capital Medical University, from January 2019 to March 2019. Demographic and clinical laboratory data, including serum sclerostin (SOST), calcium (Ca), phosphate (P), serum albumin (ALB), and intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) levels, were collected. Abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) was assessed using abdominal lateral X-ray examination to determine the occurrence of vascular calcification, and patients were divided into the AAC group and Non-AAC group based on the results. Abstract Objective To evaluate the efficacy and safety of intrapleural perfusion with hyperthermic chemotherapy (IPHC) in treating malignant pleural effusion (MPE). Methods PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), VIP Chinese Science and Technology Journal Full-text Database (VP-CSJFD), and Wanfang database were searched by computer from database establishment to January 17, 2024. Relevant randomized controlled articles with IPHC as the observational group and intrapleural perfusion chemotherapy (IPC) as the control group for MPE were included. Then, the methodological quality of the included articles was evaluated and statistically analyzed using Stata 16.0. Results Sixteen trials with 647 patients receiving IPHC and 661 patients receiving IPC were included. IntroductionEsophagectomy patients who experience unplanned ICU admission (UIA) may experience a heavier economic burden and worse clinical outcomes than those who experience routine intensive care unit (ICU) admission. The aim of this study was to identify the risk factors for postoperative UIA in patients who underwent esophagectomy.MethodsWe retrospectively included patients with esophageal cancer who underwent esophagectomy. The characteristics of postoperative UIA were described, and univariable and multivariable analyses were performed based on the logistic regression model. Furthermore, a recursive partitioning analysis was adopted to stratify the patients according to the risk of UIA.ResultsA total of 628 patients were included in our final analysis, among whom 57 (9.1%) had an UIA. BackgroundLung is the largest mucosal area of the human body and directly connected to the external environment, facing microbial exposure and environmental stimuli. Therefore, studying the internal microorganisms of the lung is crucial for a deeper understanding of the relationship between microorganisms and the occurrence and progression of lung cancer.MethodsTumor and adjacent nontumor tissues were collected from 38 lung adenocarcinoma patients and used nanopore sequencing technology to sequence the 16s full-length sequence of bacteria, and combining bioinformatics methods to identify and quantitatively analyze microorganisms in tissues, as well as to enrich the metabolic pathways of microorganisms.Resultsthe microbial composition in lung adenocarcinoma tissues is highly similar to that in adjacent tissues, but the alpha diversity is significantly lower than that in adjacent tissues. The difference analysis results show that the bacterial communities of Streptococcaceae, Lactobacillaceae, and Neisseriales were significantly enriched in cancer tissues. The results of metabolic pathway analysis indicate that pathways related to cellular communication, transcription, and protein synthesis were significantly enriched in cancer tissue. In addition, clinical staging analysis of nicotine exposure and lung cancer found that Haemophilus, paralinfluenzae, Streptococcus gordonii were significantly enriched in the nicotine exposure group, while the microbiota of Cardiobactereae and Cardiobacterales were significantly enriched in stage II tumors. The microbiota significantly enriched in IA-II stages were Neisseriaeae, Enterobacteriales, and Cardiobacterales, respectively.ConclusionNanopore sequencing technology was performed on the full length 16s sequence, which preliminarily depicted the microbial changes and enrichment of microbial metabolic pathways in tumor and adjacent nontumor tissues. The relationship between nicotine exposure, tumor progression, and microorganisms was explored, providing a theoretical basis for the treatment of lung cancer through microbial targets.

Abstract Metabolic reprogramming has been observed in cancer metastasis, whereas metabolic changes required for malignant cells during lymph node metastasis of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) are still poorly understood. Here, we performed single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) of paired ESCC tumor tissues and lymph nodes to uncover the reprogramming of tumor microenvironment (TME) and metabolic pathways. By integrating analyses of scRNA-seq data with metabolomics of ESCC tumor tissues and plasma samples, we found nicotinate and nicotinamide metabolism pathway was dysregulated in ESCC patients with lymph node metastasis (LN+), exhibiting as significantly increased 1-methylnicotinamide (MNA) in both tumors and plasma. Further data indicated high expression of N-methyltransferase (NNMT), which converts active methyl groups from the universal methyl donor, S-adenosylmethionine (SAM), to stable MNA, contributed to the increased MNA in LN+ ESCC. NNMT promotes epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) and metastasis of ESCC in vitro and in vivo by inhibiting E-cadherin expression. Mechanically, high NNMT expression consumed too much active methyl group and decreased H3K4me3 modification at E-cadherin promoter and inhibited m6A modification of E-cadherin mRNA, therefore inhibiting E-cadherin expression at both transcriptional and post-transcriptional level. Finally, a detection method of lymph node metastasis was build based on the dysregulated metabolites, which showed good performance among ESCC patients. For lymph node metastasis of ESCC, this work supports NNMT is a master regulator of the cross-talk between cellular metabolism and epigenetic modifications, which may be a therapeutic target.

ABSTRACTPrevious studies have shown that the gut microbiota and its metabolites are associated with the success of organ transplantation. However, the specific changes in the gut microbiota of lung transplant patients remain unclear. Hence, this study aimed to elucidate the interplay between the gut microbiota, metabolome, and lung transplantation outcomes. Using 16S metagenomics sequencing and untargeted metabolic profiling, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of gut microbial and metabolic alterations in lung transplant recipients relative to non-transplant group. Our findings revealed the predominance of Enterococcus and Streptococcus genera within the lung transplant cohort, accompanied by the significant reduction in Bacteroides, Epulopiscium, Faecalibacterium, and Prevotella abundance. In addition, a significant reduction in ATRA (all-trans retinoic acid) levels and suppression of IgA production were observed in lung transplant recipients, which were found to be closely associated with the Enterococcus genus. It was speculated that the association might have implications for the prognosis of lung transplant patients. Notably, the differences in gut microbial composition and metabolomic profiles between successful transplant recipients and those experiencing chronic rejection were not statistically significant. These novel insights shed light on the putative implications of the gut microbiota and metabolome in shaping lung transplantation outcomes, and provide a foundation for future investigations and targeted therapeutic interventions.IMPORTANCEThis study has profound implications for lung transplantation as it uncovers the important role of gut microbiota and metabolome in shaping transplantation outcomes. The identification of dominant bacterial genera, such as Enterococcus and Streptococcus, within the lung transplant cohort, along with the significant decrease in Bacteroides, Epulopiscium, Faecalibacterium, and Prevotella abundance, reveals potential microbial imbalances associated with lung transplantation. In addition, a significant reduction in ATRA (all-trans retinoic acid) levels and suppression of IgA production were observed in lung transplant recipients, which were found to be closely associated with the Enterococcus genus. Given their good antitumor effects, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) are standard first-line therapy for EGFR-sensitive mutations, including exon 19 deletions and exon 21 L858R mutations. EGFR fusion mutations and EGFR amplification are very rare in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We describe 2 patients with NSCLC harboring EGFR fusion mutations (EGFR-MACF1 and EGFR-GNAT3) combined with EGFR amplification. Both patients received EGFR-TKI treatment, and 1 of them showed an antitumor response.

The widespread adoption of renewable energy sources presents a significant challenge to the flexibility of power system. To assess the flexibility of the power system in scenarios with uncertain renewable energy output, it is crucial to quantify it quantitatively. This evaluation plays a vital role in planning flexible regulatory resources and dispatching resources for both the energy source and load. This study introduces a novel flexibility assessment model tailored for power grids with high renewable energy penetration, specifically addressing uncertainty associated with wind and PV. By analyzing the impact of wind and PV uncertainty on system flexibility, the paper proposes an improved cohesive hierarchical cluster analysis method, incorporating reliability considerations based on the Davies-Bouldin classification reliability index. Additionally, the study develops models for flexibility resources and demands within high renewable energy power systems, along with quantitative assessment indicators across three key aspects. Through a structured flexibility assessment process accounting for wind and PV uncertainty, the effectiveness of the proposed approach is validated using real-world data from a renewable energy power grid in Shandong province. A set of typical renewable energy output scenarios with uncertainty is constructed using the improved hierarchical cluster analysis method. The study then analyses the impact of different wind and PV penetration rates and the proportion of energy storage units on system flexibility by the flexibility assessment model to validate the proposed method's effectiveness.

Summary: Janus textiles with asymmetric wettability have shown great potential in wearable applications due to their ability to manage biofluids efficiently. This review summarizes recent advances in smart Janus textiles for biofluid control and monitoring, focusing on wearable technologies. We first introduce the design configurations and fabrication approaches of Janus textiles, including asymmetric generation and asymmetric decoration strategies. We then highlight their diverse wearable applications spanning personal thermal management textiles, sweat sensors, hemostatic wound dressings, and protective equipment. These textiles offer innovative solutions for directional sweat transport, enhancing cooling and humidity control, and providing antibacterial properties. Finally, we discuss current limitations in durability, biocompatibility, and manufacturing scalability, alongside emerging opportunities in the field of smart Janus textiles.

Objective: To describe our experience of reducing anastomotic leakage, a problem that has not been properly solved. Methods: Starting in January 2020, we began implementing our integrated strategy (application of an esophageal diameter-approximated slender gastric tube, preservation of the fibrous tissue around the residual esophagus and thyroid inferior pole anastomosis) in consecutive patients undergoing esophagectomy without a nasogastric tube or a nasal-jejunum feeding tube. Additionally, the blood supply at the site of the anastomosis was evaluated with a near-infrared fluorescence thoracoscope after the completion of esophagogastric anastomosis in the integrated strategy group. Results: Of 570 patients who were reviewed, 119 (20.9%) underwent the integrated strategy, and 451 (79.1%) underwent the conventional strategy. The rate of anastomotic leakage was 2.5% in the integrated strategy group and 10.2% in the conventional strategy group (p = 0.008). In the integrated strategy group, the site of most of the anastomotic blood supply was the residual esophagus dominant (82.4%), followed by the gastroesophageal dual-dominant (12.6%) and the gastric tube dominant (5.0%). The reconstruction route was more likely to be orthotopic in the integrated strategy group than in the conventional strategy group (89.9% vs. 38.6%, p = 0.004). Gastric dilation was identified in 3.4% of the patients in the integrated strategy group and in 21.1% in the conventional strategy group. Conclusions: Patients who underwent our proposed integrated strategy (Zhengzhou Strategy) during McKeown esophagectomy without a nasogastric tube or a nasal-jejunum feeding tube had a strikingly lower rate of anastomotic leakage and a relatively lower rate of postoperative complications, such as gastric tube dilation and delayed gastric emptying.

Physically unclonable functions (PUFs) are crucial for enhancing cybersecurity by providing unique, intrinsic identifiers for electronic devices, thus ensuring their authenticity and preventing unauthorized cloning. The SRAM-PUF, characterized by its simple structure and ease of implementation in various scenarios, has gained widespread usage. The soft-decision Reed–Muller (RM) code, an error correction code, is commonly employed in these designs. This paper introduces the design of an RM code soft-decision attack algorithm to reveal its potential security risks. To address this problem, we propose a soft-decision SRAM-PUF structure based on the elliptic curve digital signature algorithm (ECDSA). To improve the processing speed of the proposed secure SRAM-PUF, we propose a custom ECDSA scheme. Further, we also propose a universal architecture for the critical operations in ECDSA, elliptic curve scalar multiplication (ECSM), and elliptic curve double scalar multiplication (ECDSM) based on the differential addition chain (DAC). For ECSMs, iterations can be performed directly; for ECDSMs, a two-dimensional DAC is constructed through precomputation, followed by iterations. Moreover, due to the high similarity of ECSM and ECDSM data paths, this universal architecture saves hardware resources. Our design is implemented on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) using a Xilinx Virtex-7 and an TSMC 40 nm process. Compared to existing research, our design exhibits a lower bit error rate (2.7×10−10) and better area–time performance (3902 slices, 6.615 μs ECDSM latency).

Abstract Objective This study aimed to explore the feasibility and advantages of a modified chest tube suture-fixation technique in uniportal video-assisted thoracic surgery for pulmonary resection. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on 116 patients who underwent uniportal video-assisted thoracic surgery (U-VATS) for lung diseases in Zhengzhou People’s Hospital between October 2019 and October 2021. Patients were stratified into two groups based on the applied suture-fixation methods, i.e., 72 patients in the active group and 44 patients in the control group. The two groups were subsequently compared in the terms of gender, age, operation method, indwelling time of chest tube, postoperative pain score, chest tube removal time, wound healing grade, length of hospital stay, incision healing grade, and patient satisfaction. Results There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of gender, age, operation method, indwelling time of chest tube, postoperative pain score, and length of hospital stay (P = 0.167, 0.185, 0.085, 0.051, 0.927, and 0.362, respectively). Abstract Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), the principal constituent of the heterogenous tumor microenvironment, have been shown to promote tumor progression; however, the underlying mechanism is still less clear. Here, we find that transgelin (TAGLN) protein levels increased in primary CAFs isolated from human lung cancer, compared with those in paired normal fibroblasts. Tumor microarrays (TMAs) revealed that increased stromal TAGLN levels correlates with more lymphatic metastasis of tumor cells. In a subcutaneous tumor transplantation model, overexpression of Tagln in fibroblasts also increased tumor cell spread in mice. Further experiments show that Tagln overexpression promoted fibroblast activation and mobility in vitro. And TAGLN facilitates p-p65 entry into the nucleus, thereby activating the NF-κB signaling pathway in fibroblasts. Activated fibroblasts promote lung cancer progression via enhancing the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, especially interleukine-6 (IL-6). Our study revealed that the high levels of stromal TAGLN is a predictive risk factor for patients with lung cancer. Targeting stromal TAGLN may present an alternative therapeutic strategy against lung cancer progression.

The characterisation of the pore-fracture structure (PFS) and its evolution in coal during mining are essential for preventing gas outbursts and improving gas extraction efficiency. In this study, the evolution of the PFS in coal samples under the condition of mining stress was directly captured in situ by combination of the mechanical testing system with high-precision visualisation nuclear magnetic resonance equipment. A fractional derivative model was established to describe the relationship between stress and porosity based on experimental results of the PFS under different stress states. The results showed that with an increase in the deviatoric stress, the adsorption pore content increases rapidly initially and then increases slowly or remains unchanged; the seepage pore and fracture (SPF) content decreases initially and then increases. The SPF compressibility coefficient decreases with an increase in the deviatoric stress. The fractional derivative model can accurately describe the stress sensitivity of the SPFs at the pre-peak stage, thus providing a new approach for accurately characterising the seepage characteristics of coal reservoirs.

Abstract Background As the preoperative examination of esophageal cancer has improved, the likelihood of finding diseases in other organs that require surgical treatment has also increased. The purpose of this study was to explore the feasibility of combined surgery for esophageal cancer by analyzing the occurrence of postoperative complications in patients with esophageal cancer. Methods The clinical characteristics of 1566 patients with esophageal cancer who underwent thoracic surgery in our hospital between January 2017 and September 2022 were analyzed retrospectively. The feasibility of combined surgery for esophageal cancer was analyzed by comparing postoperative complications in patients who underwent simple esophageal cancer surgery (SEC) with those in patients who underwent combined surgery for esophageal cancer (COEC). The tendency scores of patients in the COEC and SEC groups (1:2) were matched to balance the confounding clinical factors, and the difference in postoperative complications was further analyzed. Moreover, we performed a subgroup analysis of esophagectomy combined with lung resection (ECL). In addition, the independent risk factors for postoperative Clavien–Dindo ≥ grade III complications of esophageal cancer were analyzed by multivariate logistic regression. Results A total of 1566 patients (1147 (73.2%) males and 419 (26.8%) females), with an average age of 64.2 years, were analyzed. There was no significant difference in postoperative complications between the SEC and COEC groups according to the Clavien-Dindo classification (P=0.713). An analysis of the complications revealed that those in the COEC group had a higher incidence of lung consolidation than those in the SEC group (P=0.007). However, when we performed propensity score matching (PSM) on the SEC and COEC groups, there was still no significant difference in complications according to the Clavien–Dindo classification (P=0.346); furthermore, when a detailed analysis of complications was performed, there was no significant difference between the two. In subgroup analysis, after we performed PSM in ECL patients and SEC patients, we also found no significant difference in postoperative complications between patients with ECL and patients with SEC. In addition, we found that a history of diabetes (OR=1.604, P=0.029, 95% CI=1.049–2.454), a history of coronary heart disease (OR=1.592, P=0.046, 95% CI=1.008–2.515), diffusing capacity of the lungs for carbon monoxide (DLCO) (OR=0.916, P=0.024, 95% CI=0.849–0.988), and ALB level (OR=0.955, P=0.007, 95% CI=0.924–0.987) were independent factors that influenced postoperative complications in esophageal cancer patients with grade III or higher complications. Conclusion Combined surgery for esophageal cancer does not increase the incidence of postoperative complications. In addition, a history of diabetes mellitus or coronary heart disease, carbon monoxide dispersion, and preoperative ALB level are independent risk factors for grade III or higher postoperative complications of esophageal cancer.

Mesotrione is a widely used post-emergence herbicide for maize. The toxicity of mesotrione to maize (especially sweet corn) has been widely reported, and some sweet corn varieties are highly sensitive to mesotrione, which affects subsequent plant growth periods. However, the molecular mechanisms responsible for the differences in susceptibility to mesotrione are not known. By comparing changes in the transcriptome of mesotrione-tolerant line 301 and mesotrione-sensitive line 276 after mesotrione treatment, we found that the genes coding light-harvesting chlorophyll protein complex were induced in 301, and the genes coding loosening cell walls were overrepresented in 276. The net photosynthetic rate, maximum photochemical efficiency of leaf PSII, photochemical quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence, and the electron transport rate were significantly higher in 301 than in 276 after mesotrione treatment, and these effects became more severe as time passed. In addition, oxidative balance was also affected by mesotrione. Compared with 301, SOD, POD, and CAT activities were significantly reduced with longer exposure time in 276. The results suggested that sweet corn can mitigate herbicide mesotrione toxicity by improving photosynthesis, ROS scavenging, and cell wall synthesis.

Mouse embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and epiblast stem cells (EpiSCs) are derived from pre- and post-implantation embryos, representing the initial “naïve” and final “primed” states of pluripotency, respectively. In this study, novel reprogrammed pluripotent stem cells (rPSCs) were induced from mouse EpiSCs using a chemically defined medium containing mouse LIF, BMP4, CHIR99021, XAV939, and SB203580. The rPSCs exhibited domed clones and expressed key pluripotency genes, with both X chromosomes active in female cells. Furthermore, rPSCs differentiated into cells of all three germ layers in vivo through teratoma formation. Regarding epigenetic modifications, the DNA methylation of Oct4, Sox2, and Nanog promoter regions and the mRNA levels of Dnmt3a, Dnmt3b, and Dnmt1 were reduced in rPSCs compared with EpiSCs. However, the miR-290 family was significantly upregulated in rPSCs. After removing SB203580, an inhibitor of the p38 MAPK pathway, the cell colonies changed from domed to flat, with a significant decrease in the expression of pluripotency genes and the miR-290 family. Conversely, overexpression of pri-miR-290 reversed these changes. In addition, Map2k6 was identified as a direct target gene of miR-291b-3p, indicating that the miR-290 family maintains pluripotency and self-renewal in rPSCs by regulating the MAPK signaling pathway.

The extensive utilization of zinc oxide nanoparticles in consumer products and the industry has led to their substantial entry into the soil through air and surface runoff transportation, which causes ecotoxicity in agro-ecosystems and detrimental effects on crop production. Nanobubbles (diameter size < 1 µm) have many advantages, such as a high surface area, rapid mass transfer, and long retention time. In this study, wheat seedlings were irrigated with a 500 mg L−1 zinc oxide nanoparticle solution delivered in the form of nanobubble watering (nanobubble-ZnO-NPs). We found that nanobubble watering improved the growth and nutrient status of wheat exposed to zinc oxide nanoparticles, as evidenced by increased total foliar nitrogen and phosphorus, along with enhanced leaf dry mass per area. This effect can be attributed to nanobubbles disassembling zinc oxide aggregates formed due to soil organic carbon, thereby mitigating nutrient absorption limitations in plants. Furthermore, nanobubbles improved the capability of soil oxygen input, leading to increased root activity and glycolysis efficiency in wheat roots. This work provides valuable insights into the influence of nanobubble watering on soil quality and crop production and offers an innovative approach for agricultural irrigation that enhances the effectiveness and efficiency of water application.

We synthesized a series of Ru-Ti-Ni/CNT electrodes to degrade levofloxacin in wastewater. The unique structure of Ni single-atom-kernelled Ru nanoparticles regulates the reaction process, producing a notable synergistic effect. The reaction kinetics constant of Ru-Ti-Ni/CNT with a Ru: Ti ratio of 10:0 outperforms Ni/CNT by 3.7 times and CNT alone by 16.4 times. Comprehensive characterizations revealed its morphology and structure nature. Abstract Background Ellis–van Creveld (EvC) syndrome, caused by variants in EVC, is a rare genetic skeletal dysplasia. Its clinical phenotype is highly diverse. EvC syndrome is rarely reported in prenatal stages because its presentation overlaps with other diseases. Methods A Chinese pedigree diagnosed with EvC syndrome was enrolled in this study. Whole‐exome sequencing (WES) was applied in the proband to screen potential genetic variant(s), and then Sanger sequencing was used to identify the variant in family members. Minigene experiments were applied. Results WES identified a homozygous variant (NM_153717.3:c.153_174 + 42del) in EVC which was inherited from the heterozygous parents and confirmed by Sanger sequencing. Further experiments demonstrated that this variant disrupts the canonical splicing site and produces a new splicing site at NM_153717.3: c.‐164_174del, which ultimately leads to a 337 bp deletion at the 3′ end of exon 1 and loss of the start codon. Conclusion This is the first reported case of EvC syndrome based on a splicing variant and detailed delineation of the aberrant splicing effect in the fetus. Our study demonstrates the pathogenesis of this new variant, expands the spectrum of EVC mutations, and demonstrates that WES is a powerful tool in the clinical diagnosis of diseases with genetic heterogeneity.

Abstract Objective To discuss the application of bilateral simultaneous sequential single-incision video-assisted thoracic surgery in multiple nodules in both lungs. Methods A retrospective analysis of 10 patients in Zhengzhou People’s Hospital who underwent single-incision thoracoscopic surgery to treat multiple nodules in both lungs at the same time from September 2019 to January 2021, and analyze the perioperative indicators (general condition, smoking history, family history, follow-up time of pulmonary nodules, size, location, height and weight, pulmonary function, intraoperative blood loss, operation time, color and volume of drainage fluid, catheterization time, perioperative complications, length of stay, pathology, patient satisfaction, etc.). Results All 10 patients used single-incision thoracoscopy to complete bilateral simultaneous sequential operations, aged 32 to 70 years, 8 female patients, 2 male patients, preoperative follow-up time ranging from 1 day to 2 years, a total of 23 lung nodules were removed except for the benign lesions in one nodule in the 2 patients, the other nodules were tumorous lesions (91.3%). The average total hospital stay was 10.5 days (8–14 days), and the average operation time was 194.5 min (145–292 min). The blood loss ranged from 10 to 280 ml, all patients had no serious complications during the perioperative period, and they recovered well and were discharged smoothly, and the satisfaction reached 100%. Conclusion Single-incision bilateral simultaneous sequential thoracoscopy have certain advantages in the treatment of patients with multiple nodules in both lungs, conforms to the concept of rapid recovery, and is a feasible choice in the shared decision making of doctors and patients.

Abstract Background RNA preparations contaminated with genomic DNA (gDNA) are frequently disregarded by RNA-seq studies. Such contamination may generate false results; however, their effect on the outcomes of RNA-seq analyses is unknown. To address this gap in our knowledge, here we added different concentrations of gDNA to total RNA preparations and subjected them to RNA-seq analysis. Results We found that the contaminating gDNA altered the quantification of transcripts at relatively high concentrations. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) resulting from gDNA contamination may therefore contribute to higher rates of false enrichment of pathways compared with analogous samples lacking numerous DEGs. A strategy was developed to correct gene expression levels in gDNA-contaminated RNA samples, which assessed the magnitude of contamination to improve the reliability of the results. Conclusions Our study indicates that caution must be exercised when interpreting results associated with low-abundance transcripts. The data provided here will likely serve as a valuable resource to evaluate the influence of gDNA contamination on RNA-seq analysis, particularly related to the detection of putative novel gene elements.

Background and purposeUnnecessary surgery can be avoided, and more appropriate treatment plans can be developed for patients if the efficacy of neoadjuvant immunochemotherapy for esophageal cancer (EC) can be predicted before surgery. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of machine learning models based on delta features of immunochemotherapy CT images to predict the efficacy of neoadjuvant immunochemotherapy in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) compared with machine learning models based solely on postimmunochemotherapy CT images.Materials and methodsA total of 95 patients were enrolled in our study and randomly divided into a training group (n = 66) and test group (n = 29). We extracted preimmunochemotherapy radiomics features from preimmunochemotherapy enhanced CT images in the preimmunochemotherapy group (pregroup) and postimmunochemotherapy radiomics features from postimmunochemotherapy enhanced CT images in the postimmunochemotherapy group (postgroup). We then subtracted the preimmunochemotherapy features from the postimmunochemotherapy features and obtained a series of new radiomics features that were included in the delta group. The reduction and screening of radiomics features were carried out by using the Mann-Whitney U test and LASSO regression. Five pairwise machine learning models were established, the performance of which was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and decision curve analyses.ResultsThe radiomics signature of the postgroup was composed of 6 radiomics features; that of the delta-group was composed of 8 radiomics features. The area under the ROC curve (AUC) of the machine learning model with the best efficacy was 0.824 (0.706-0.917) in the postgroup and 0.848 (0.765-0.917) in the delta group. The decision curve showed that our machine learning models had good predictive performance. The delta group performed better than the postgroup for each corresponding machine learning model.ConclusionWe established machine learning models that have good predictive efficacy and can provide certain reference values for clinical treatment decision-making. Our machine learning models based on delta imaging features performed better than those based on single time-stage postimmunochemotherapy imaging features.

It has been shown that increased concentrations of zinc oxide nanoparticles (nano-ZnO) in the soil are harmful to plant growth. However, the sensitivity of different wheat cultivars to nano-ZnO stress is still unclear. To detect the physiological response process of wheat varieties with different tolerance to nano-ZnO stress, four wheat cultivars (viz., cv. TS1, ZM18, JM22, and LM6) with different responses to nano-ZnO stress were selected, depending on previous nano-ZnO stress trials with 120 wheat cultivars in China. The results found that nano-ZnO exposure reduced chlorophyll concentrations and photosynthetic electron transport efficiency, along with the depressed carbohydrate metabolism enzyme activities, and limited plant growth. Meanwhile, the genotypic variation in photosynthetic carbon assimilation under nano-ZnO stress was found in wheat plants. Wheat cv. JM22 and LM6 possessed relatively lower Zn concentrations and higher leaf nitrogen per area, less reductions in their net photosynthetic rate, a maximum quantum yield of the PS II (Fv/Fm), electron transport flux per cross-section (ETo/CSm), trapped energy flux per cross-section (TRo/CSm), and total soluble sugar and sucrose concentrations under nano-ZnO stress, showing a better tolerance to nano-ZnO stress than wheat cv. TS1 and ZM18. In addition, the chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters Fv/Fm, ETo/CSm, and TRo/CSm could be used to rapidly screen wheat varieties resistant to nano-ZnO stress. The results here provide a new approach for solving the issues of crop yield decline in regions polluted by heavy metal nanoparticles and promoting the sustainable utilization of farmland with heavy metal pollution.

IntroductionDrip irrigation is an efficient water-saving system used to improve crop production worldwide. However, we still lack a comprehensive understanding of maize plant senescence and its association with yield, soil water, and nitrogen (N) utilization under this system.MethodsA 3-year field experiment in the northeast plains of China was used to assess four drip irrigation systems: (1) drip irrigation under plastic film mulch (PI); (2) drip irrigation under biodegradable film mulch (BI); (3) drip irrigation incorporating straw returning (SI); and (4) drip irrigation with the tape buried at a shallow soil depth (OI), and furrow irrigation (FI) was used as the control. The plant senescence characteristic based on the dynamic process of green leaf area (GLA) and live root length density (LRLD) during the reproductive stage, and its correlation with leaf N components, water use efficiency (WUE), and N use efficiency (NUE) was investigated.ResultsPI followed by BI achieved the highest integral GLA and LRLD, grain filling rate, and leaf and root senescence rate after silking. Greater yield, WUE, and NUE were positively associated with higher N translocation efficiency of leaf protein responding for photosynthesis, respiration, and structure under PI and BI; whereas, no significant differences were found in yield, WUE, and NUE between PI and BI. SI effectively promoted LRLD in the deeper 20- to 100-cm soil layers, prolonged the GLA and LRLD persistent durations, and reduced the leaf and root senescence rates. The remobilization of non-protein storage N was stimulated by SI, FI, and OI, which made up for the relative inadequacy of leaf N.DiscussionInstead of persistent GLA and LRLD durations and high translocation efficiency of non-protein storage N, fast and large protein N translocation from leaves to grains under PI and BI was found to facilitate maize yield, WUE, and NUE in the sole cropping semi-arid region, and BI was recommend considering that it can reduce plastic pollution.

ABSTRACT Measles virus and canine distemper virus (CDV) cause lethal infections in their respective hosts characterized by severe immunosuppression. To furtherly acknowledge the attenuated mechanisms of the regionally ongoing epidemic CDV isolates and provide novel perspectives for designing new vaccines and therapeutic drugs, a recombinant CDV rHBF-vacH was employed with a vaccine hemagglutinin (H) gene replacement by reverse genetics based on an infectious cDNA clone for the CDV wild-type HBF-1 strain. Interestingly, unlike previously published reports that a vaccine H protein completely changed a pathogenic wild-type CDV variant to be avirulent, rHBF-vacH was only partially attenuated by alleviating the degree of viral immunosuppression, and still caused 66.7% lethality in ferrets with a prolonged period of disease. Further comparisons of pathogenic mechanisms proved that the weaker but necessary invasions into peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of rHBF-vacH, and subsequently persistent viral replications in PBMCs and multiple organs, together contributed to its 66.7% mortality. In addition, despite significantly higher titers than the parent viruses, rHBF-vacH would not be a suitable candidate for a live vaccine, with great invasion and infection potentials of PBMCs from 16 tested kinds of host species. Altogether, sustained and severe viral replication in PBMCs with moderate immunosuppression was first proven to be an alternative novel pathogenic mechanism for CDV, which might help us to understand possible reasons for CDV fatal infections among domestic dogs and the highly susceptible wild species during natural transmission. IMPORTANCE Despite widespread vaccine campaigns for domestic dogs, CDV remained an important infectious disease in vaccinated carnivores and wild species. In recent years, the regionally ongoing epidemic CDV isolates have emphasized conservation threats to, and potentially disastrous epidemics in, endangered species worldwide. However, little is known about how to deal with the CDV variants constantly regional epidemic. In this study, we employed a recombinant CDV rHBF-vacH with a vaccine H gene replacement in a CDV wild-type HBF-1 context to attenuate the epidemic CDV variant to design a new vaccine candidate. Interestingly, rHBF-vacH was only partially attenuated by alleviating the degree of viral immunosuppression, and still caused 66.7% lethality in ferrets by weaker but necessary invasions into PBMCs, and subsequently persistent and severe viral replications in PBMCs. Significantly higher virus titers of rHBF-vacH in vitro might indicate the rapid cell-to-cell spreads in vivo that indirectly contribute to fatal infections of rHBF-vacH in ferrets.

BackgroundRadiotherapy plays an important role in the treatment of lung cancer. However, radiation-related deaths from cardiovascular disease (CVD) are a concern in these patients, and few studies have examined CVD-related death associated with lung cancer. We aimed to evaluate the risk of CVD-related death after radiotherapy in patients with lung and bronchus cancer.MethodsData were extracted from the surveillance, epidemiology, and end results database. Propensity score matching (PSM) was applied to reduce possible bias between patients who received radiotherapy and those who did not. The Kaplan–Meier method was used to estimate cardiovascular-specific survival (CVSS), and the log-rank test was used to compare CVSS between the radiotherapy and no radiotherapy groups. Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was performed to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) of CVD-related death.ResultsA total of 225,570 patients with lung and bronchus cancer were included, and 201,282 patients remained after PSM. Radiotherapy was identified as an independent risk factor for CVSS among patients with lung and bronchus cancer before PSM (HR: 1.18, P < 0.001) and after PSM (HR: 1.18, P < 0.001). Patients treated with radiotherapy had a significantly worse CVSS than those who did not receive radiotherapy before PSM (25-year CVSS: 49.9 vs. 56.4%, P = 0.002) and after PSM (25-year CVSS: 48.4 vs. 56.7%, P < 0.001). Radiotherapy was associated with more deaths from heart disease before PSM (81.9 vs. 77.2%, P < 0.001) and after PSM (83.0 vs. 78.7%, P < 0.001).ConclusionRadiotherapy is associated with an increased risk of CVD-related death, especially death from heart disease, in patients with lung and bronchus cancer. More efforts are needed to monitor cardiovascular health after radiotherapy.

The rapidly evolving field of Virtual Reality (VR)-based Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) presents a significant demand for robust and accurate hand tracking solutions. Current technologies, predominantly based on single-sensing modalities, fall short in providing comprehensive information capture due to susceptibility to occlusions and environmental factors. In this paper, we introduce a novel sensor fusion approach combined with a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM)-based algorithm for enhanced hand tracking in VR-based HCI. Our system employs six Leap Motion controllers, two RealSense depth cameras, and two Myo armbands to yield a multi-modal data capture. This rich data set is then processed using LSTM, ensuring the accurate real-time tracking of complex hand movements. The proposed system provides a powerful tool for intuitive and immersive interactions in VR environments.

Abscisic acid (ABA) plays a vital role in the induction of low temperature tolerance in plants. To understand the molecular basis of this phenomenon, we performed a proteomic analysis on an ABA-deficit mutant barley (Az34) and its wild type (cv Steptoe) under control conditions (25/18 °C) and after exposure to 0 °C for 24 h. Most of the differentially abundant proteins were involved in the processes of photosynthesis and metabolisms of starch, sucrose, carbon, and glutathione. The chloroplasts in Az34 leaves were more severely damaged, and the decrease in Fv/Fm was larger in Az34 plants compared with WT under low temperature. Under low temperature, Az34 plants possessed significantly higher activities of ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase, fructokinase, monodehydroascorbate reductase, and three invertases, but lower UDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase activity than WT. In addition, concentrations of proline and soluble protein were lower, while concentration of H2O2 was higher in Az34 plants compared to WT under low temperature. Collectively, the results indicated that ABA deficiency induced modifications in starch and sucrose biosynthesis and sucrolytic pathway and overaccumulation of reactive oxygen species were the main reason for depressed low temperature tolerance in barley, which provide novel insights to the response of barley to low temperature under future climate change.

Abstract Background Esophageal carcinogenesis is a multifactorial process in which genetic and environmental factors interact to activate intracellular signals, leading to the uncontrolled survival and growth of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) cells. The intracellular pathways of ESCC cells could be regulated by proteinase activated-receptors (PARs), which are comprised of four receptors (i.e., PAR-1, PAR-2, PAR-3, and PAR-4). Therefore, the function and possible mechanism of PAR1 and PAR4 in the progression of ECSS were explored in our study. Methods First, we detected the expression levels of PAR1 and PAR4 in 27 cases of ESCC specimens and cell lines by RT-qPCR, IHC and western blot. Meanwhile, the correlation between PAR1/PAR4 expression levels, clinicopathological characteristics, and disease free survival was analyzed. Then, we constructed PAR1/PAR4 knockdown cell models and investigated the role of PAR1/PAR4 knockdown on the proliferation, apoptosis, changes of calcium flow, and metastasis of ESCC cells via MTT, flow cytometry, transwell and wound healing assays in vitro. Further, an experimental metastasis model in vivo was established to explore the role of stable PAR1/PAR4 knockdown on the growth and metastasis of ESCC cells. Finally, the role of nSMase2 in the activation of NF-κB induced by PAR4 and the role of NF-κB and STAT3 signaling pathways in the PAR1/PAR4-mediated tumor promoting or suppressive functions were measured by immunoprecipitation, western blot and immunofluorescence assays. Results First, the integrated results demonstrated the expression levels of PAR1 and PAR4 are inversely proportional in ESCC. PAR1 potently enhanced tumor growth and metastasis, while PAR4 had an inhibitory effect. Further, the co-activation of STAT3 and NF-κB was involved in the PAR1 activation-induced tumor promoting effect, while only NF-κB participated in the PAR4 activation-induced tumor inhibitory effect in ESCC. To be specific, FAK/PI3K/AKT/STAT3/NF-κB signaling mediated PAR1 activation-induced tumor promoting effect and nSMase2/MAPK/NF-κB signaling mediated PAR4 activation-induced tumor inhibitory effect. Conclusions Overall, the study has provided new insights into the potential implication of PAR1 and PAR4 in the pathogenesis of ESCC. Besides, FAK/PI3K/AKT/STAT3/NF-κB and nSMase2/MAPK/NF-κB pathways may be novel targets for regulating tumor growth and metastasis in ESCC patients.

Third-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), such as osimertinib, almonertinib and furmonertinib, overcome the mechanisms of resistance to first-generation inhibitors (such as gefitinib, erlotinib and icotinib) by incorporating an acrylamide group that alkylates the Cys797 of EGFR T790M. However, drug resistance is inevitable, even for third-generation TKIs. Screening for drug-resistant mutations by repeat biopsy and repeat gene sequencing is necessary after TKI treatment. Among various third-generation TKI-resistant mutations, secondary mutation of the L718 residue of EGFR exon 18 was found in approximately 8% of patients and is responsible for drug resistance in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, there is limited clinical experience of targeted therapy for this mutation. Herein, we report for the first time that afatinib and cetuximab combination therapy can overcome such drug resistance.

Rhizospheric melatonin application has a positive effect on the tolerance of plants to low temperature; however, it remains unknown whether the rhizosphere microorganisms are involved in this process. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of exogenous melatonin on the diversity and functioning of fungi and bacteria in rhizosphere of barley under low temperature. The results showed that rhizospheric melatonin application positively regulated the photosynthetic carbon assimilation and redox homeostasis in barley in response to low temperature. These effects might be associated with an altered diversity of microbial community in rhizosphere, especially the species and relative abundance of nitrogen cycling related microorganisms, as exemplified by the changes in rhizosphere metabolites in the pathways of amino acid synthesis and metabolism. Collectively, it was suggested that the altered rhizospheric microbial status upon melatonin application was associated with the response of barley to low temperature. This suggested that the melatonin induced microbial changes should be considered for its application in the crop cold-resistant cultivation.

ObjectiveThis paper aimed to design and explore the versatility of the incision for the robot-assisted thoracic surgery.MethodsThe concept of universal incision was designed and put forward. The clinical data of 342 cases of robot-assisted thoracic surgery were summarized, including sex, age, clinical diagnosis, operative method, operative time, conversion to thoracotomy, intraoperative blood loss, number of lymph node dissections, postoperative hospital stays, postoperative pathology, and postoperative complications of the patients.ResultsThe 342 cases of robot-assisted surgery included 178 pulmonary surgery cases (94 lobectomy cases, 75 segmentectomy cases, 6 wedge resection cases, and 3 sleeve lobectomy cases), 112 esophageal surgery cases (107 McKeown approach cases and 5 esophageal leiomyoma resection cases), and 52 mediastinal tumor cases (42 anterior mediastinum cases and 10 posterior mediastinum cases). Among these, two cases were converted to thoracotomy (both esophageal cases), and the rest were successful with no massive intraoperative bleeding and no perioperative death.ConclusionThe universal incision of robot-assisted thoracic surgery is safe and feasible and is suitable for most cases of thoracic surgery.

BackgroundThe purpose of this study was to investigate the predictive value of the modified systemic inflammation score (mSIS) in postoperative unplanned admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC).MethodsThe clinical data of 1,321 patients with NSCLC treated with thoracic surgery in our hospital from August 2019 to June 2021 were analyzed retrospectively. The preoperative mSIS, which takes into account the serum albumin (ALB) level and lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), was recorded as 0, 1 or 2 and then was used to identify high-risk patients with unplanned admission to the ICU. The independent risk factors for unplanned admission to the ICU in patients with NSCLC after surgery were identified by multivariate logistic regression analysis.ResultsA total of 1,321 patients, including 549 (41.6%) males and 772 (58.4%) females, were included. The median age was 57 years (range 16–95 years). The incidence of unplanned admission to the ICU in patients with mSIS = 2 was significantly higher than that in those with mSIS = 0 and mSIS = 1. The multivariate analysis showed that an mSIS of 2 (OR = 3.728; P = 0.004; 95% CI, 1.520–9.143), an alcohol consumption history (OR = 2.791, P = 0.011; 95% CI, 1.262–6.171), intraoperative infusion volume (OR = 1.001, P = 0.021; 95% CI, 1.000–1.001) and preoperative underlying diseases (OR = 3. 57, P = 0.004; 95% CI, 1.497–8.552) were independent risk factors for unplanned admission to the ICU after lung cancer surgery. Objectives: Bronchopleural fistula is a serious complication of pneumonectomy and lobectomy and results in a reduction in the quality of life of patients. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of percutaneous drainage tube placement with continuous negative pressure drainage for the treatment of peripheral bronchopleural fistula. Methods: Data of 16 patients with peripheral bronchopleural fistula were retrospectively analyzed. A percutaneous thoracic drainage tube was placed under fluoroscopy and connected with a negative pressure suction device. The drainage tube was removed when the residual cavity disappeared on computed tomography. Results: All 16 patients underwent lobectomy, including 11 patients with lung cancer (68.8%), 4 patients with pulmonary infection (25.0%), and 1 patient with hemoptysis (6.3%). All patients underwent successful drainage tube placement on the first attempt with a technical success rate of 100%. No serious complications occurred during or after the procedure. The drainage tubes were adjusted 3.25 ± 2.24 times (range: 1–8 times). A total of 30 drainage tubes were used (average per patient, 1.88 ± 1.36 tubes). The cure time of 16 patients was 114.94 ± 101.08 days (range, 30–354 days). The median drainage tube indwelling duration was 87 days, and the 75th percentile was 117 days. Conclusion: Interventional percutaneous thoracic drainage tube placement with continuous negative pressure drainage is an effective, safe, and feasible method for the treatment of peripheral bronchopleural fistula.

Abstract We identified a rare missense germline mutation in BARD1 (c.403G>A or p.Asp135Asn) as pathogenic using integrated genomics and transcriptomics profiling of germline and tumor samples from an early-onset triple-negative breast cancer patient who later was administrated with a PARP inhibitor for 2 months. We demonstrated in cell and mouse models that, compared to the wild-type, (1) c.403G>A mutant cell lines were more sensitive to irradiation, a DNA damage agent, and a PARP inhibitor; (2) c.403G>A mutation inhibited interaction between BARD1 and RAD51 (but not BRCA1); and (3) c.403G>A mutant mice were hypersensitive to ionizing radiation. Our study shed lights on the clinical interpretation of rare germline mutations of BARD1.

Abstract Background Enchondromas originating in the epiphyses of long bones are rare and epiphyseal osteoid osteomas are also uncommon. Diagnosis can become elusive when enchondromas or osteoid osteomas occur in atypical locations and present with nonspecific clinical and imaging characteristics. Case presentation We report a case of epiphyseal enchondroma of the left proximal femur in a 15-year-old girl with a 2-month history of left lower extremity pain. Preoperative CT displayed thickened cortex in the anterior surface of the left proximal femur with specks of calcification and inhomogeneity of the adjacent bone marrow cavity. She was diagnosed with osteoid osteoma. Postoperative pathological examination of surgically excised specimens revealed a diagnosis of enchondromas. Conclusions Our case highlights that enchondroma should be considered in lesions of the epiphysis.

BackgroundLung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is the major non-small-cell lung cancer pathological subtype with poor prognosis worldwide. Herein, we aimed to build an energy metabolism-associated prognostic gene signature to predict patient survival.MethodsThe gene expression profiles of patients with LUAD were downloaded from the TCGA and GEO databases, and energy metabolism (EM)-related genes were downloaded from the GeneCards database. Univariate Cox and LASSO analyses were performed to identify the prognostic EM-associated gene signatures. Kaplan–Meier and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were plotted to validate the predictive effect of the prognostic signatures. A CIBERSORT analysis was used to evaluate the correlation between the risk model and immune cells. Salt acclimation can promote the tolerance of wheat plants to the subsequent salt stress, which may be related to the responses of the photosynthetic apparatus. The chlorophyl (Chl) b-deficient mutant wheat ANK 32B and its wild type (WT) were firstly saltly acclimated with 30 mmol NaCl for 12 days, then subsequently subjected to 6-day salt stress (500 mmol NaCl). The ANK 32B mutant plants had lower Chl b concentration, which was manifested in the lower total Chl concentration, higher ratio of Chl a/b and in reduced photosynthetic activity (Pn). The effect of salt acclimation was manifested mainly after salt stress. Compared to non-acclimated plants, the salt acclimation increased the leaf water potential, osmotic potential (Ψo) and K concentration, while decreased the amount of Na+ and H2O2 in WT and ANK 32B under salt stress, except for Ψo in ANK 32B. In addition, the salt acclimation enhanced the APX (ascorbate peroxidase) activity by 10.55% and 33.69% in WT and ANK 32B under salt stress, respectively. Compared to the genotypes, under salt stress, the Ψo, Fv/Fm, Pn and gs of mutant plants were 5.60, 17.62, 46.73 and 26.41% lower than that of WT, respectively. These results indicated that although the salt acclimation could alleviate the negative consequences of salt stress, it is mainly manifested in the WT, and the ANK 32B plants had lower salt tolerance than WT plants, suggesting that lower Chl b concentration has a negative effect on the salt acclimation induced salt tolerance in wheat.

The primary parts of corn stalks are the leaves and the stems, which comprise the cortex and the pith. Corn has long been cultivated as an grain crops, and now it is a primary global source of sugar, ethanol, and biomass-generated energy. Even though increasing the sugar content in the stalk is an important breeding goal, progress has been modest in many breeding researchers. Accumulation is the gradual rise in quantity when new additions are made. The challenging characteristics of such sugar content in corn stalks are below the protein, bio-economy, and mechanical injury. Hence, in this research, plant water-content-enabled micro-Ribonucleic acids (PWC-miRNAs) were designed to increase the sugar content in corn stalks following an accumulation rule. High-throughput sequencing of the transcriptome, short RNAs, and coding RNAs was performed here; leaf and stem degradation from two early-maturing Corn genotypes revealed new information on miRNA-associated gene regulation in corn during the sucrose accumulation process. For sugar content in corn stalk, PWC-miRNAs were used to establish the application of the accumulation rule for data-processing monitoring throughout. Through simulation, management, and monitoring, the condition is accurately predicted, providing a new scientific and technological means to improve the efficiency of the construction of sugar content in corn stalks. The experimental analysis of PWC-miRNAs outperforms sugar content in terms of performance, accuracy, prediction ratio, and evaluation. This study aims to provide a framework for increasing the sugar content of corn stalk.

Three genotypes of wheat grown at two CO2 concentrations were used in a drought experiment, where water was withheld from the pots at anthesis until stomatal conductance (gs) dropped below 10% of the control and photosynthesis (A) approached zero. The genotypes had different leaf area (Gladius < LM19 < LM62) and while photosynthesis and shoot growth were boosted by elevated CO2, the water use and drying rate were more determined by canopy size than by stomatal density and conductance. The genotypes responded differently regarding number of fertile tillers, seeds per spike and 1000 kernel weight and, surprisingly, the largest genotype (LM62) with high water use showed the lowest relative decrease in grain yield. The maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) was only affected on the last day of the drought when the stomata were almost closed although some variation in A was still seen between the genotypes. A close correlation was found between Fv/Fm and % loss of grain yield. It indicates that the precise final physiological stress level measured by Fv/Fm at anthesis/early kernel filling could effectively predict percentage final yield loss, and LM62 was slightly less stressed than the other genotypes, due to only a small discrepancy in finalising the drying period. Therefore, Fv/Fm can be used as a proxy for estimating the yield performance of wheat after severe drought at anthesis.

Azygos continuation of the inferior vena cava (IVC) is rare in the general population and even rarer among patients with esophageal carcinoma. In 90% of cases, this congenital IVC variant is isolated and does not affect the patient’s growth or development. However, thoracic surgery such as esophagectomy would be fatal if the flow through this connection was interrupted. We present a case of minimally invasive esophagectomy in a patient with azygos continuation of the IVC.
