Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a heterogeneous, chronic, inflammatory musculoskeletal disease that can lead to peripheral and axial damage and loss of function. A clear difference between PsA and other forms of inflammatory arthritis is the different forms of bone remodeling seen in PSA which incorporates not only increased bone resorption with bone erosions, osteolysis, and loss of bone mineral density but also increased bone formation with periostitis, syndesmophytes, enthesiophytes, and ankylosis. PsA, if diagnosed late, will lead to significant structural damage, the most severe form of which is known as arthritis mutilans, and loss of physical function. Imaging plays a crucial role in diagnosing and monitoring both peripheral and axial conditions associated with PsA. Radiography is currently the main modality used to monitor structural damage in PsA though commonly used scoring systems do not include bony proliferation as a criterion. Besides, radiography is limited in determining the presence and cause of periarticular soft tissue thickening, which may arise from tendinosis, tenosynovitis, synovial proliferation, bursitis, or enthesitis. Recently, much more attention has been paid to determining the imaging characteristics of PsA, which enables more precise identification of disease and severity assessment. Newer imaging technologies also enable variations in normal bone microstructure to be distinguished from disease-related abnormality. This review discusses the current state of innovative imaging modalities in PsA, specifically concentrating on their roles in PsA diagnosis and treatment, improving the early detection of PsA, and identifying patients with skin psoriasis at risk of developing psoriatic arthritis.

Background: Unlike axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA), no classification criteria are currently available for axial psoriatic arthritis (axPsA). This study aimed to evaluate the performance of the proposed cut-offs from the Assessment of Spondyloarthritis International Society (ASAS) data-driven definitions for active and structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) lesions typical of axSpA in distinguishing axial involvement in patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA). Methods: Seventy-two consecutive PsA patients (67% male, aged 45± 14 years) meeting the CASPAR classification criteria, regardless of the presence of back pain, were included. All patients underwent radiography of the pelvis and spine, as well as sacroiliac joint (SIJ) MRI, while 52 (72%) of 72 patients also underwent whole-spine MRI. The final diagnosis of axPsA was ascertained by two experienced rheumatologists. One rheumatologist with expertise in imaging and one trained reader evaluated the radiography and MRI images. Results: AxPsA was diagnosed in 27/72 (38%) patients. The proposed cut-offs for active sacroiliitis demonstrated high specificity (95.6%) but relatively low sensitivity (51.9%) in distinguishing patients with and without axPsA. When structural lesions of the SIJ were included in addition to active lesions, the sensitivity significantly improved (96.3% vs. 51.9%) with a modest decrease in specificity (86.7% vs. 95.6%). Incorporating MRI spine lesions (using the proposed cut-offs for positive spine MRI from the SPACE cohort) alongside SIJ lesions did not further change sensitivity or specificity compared with assessing SIJ alone. Conclusion: The ASAS-proposed cut-offs for identifying active and structural lesions of SIJ demonstrated satisfactory performance in discriminating axial involvement in PsA patients.

Background: Sacroiliac joints (SIJ) radiography has lower sensitivity and specificity compared to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and low-dose CT (ldCT) of the SIJ for detecting axial spondyloarthritis. Whether this is also true for axial psoriatic arthritis (axPsA) remains uncertain. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of ldCT, MRI, and conventional radiography of SIJ and spine in distinguishing axial involvement in PsA patients. Methods: Fifty-one consecutive PsA patients (70.6% male, age 41 ± 13 years) meeting the CASPAR classification criteria, regardless of back pain, were included. All patients underwent SIJ and whole-spine radiography, SIJ MRI as well as SIJ ldCT, while 25 (49%) of 51 patients also underwent whole-spine MRI and ldCT. One rheumatologist with expertise in imaging and one trained reader evaluated images. The final diagnosis of axPsA was ascertained by two experienced rheumatologists. The sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic accuracy of the three modalities for discriminating axPsA were compared. Results: AxPsA was diagnosed in 33.3% (17) of 51 patients. In discerning axial involvement in PsA patients, MRI exhibited superior sensitivity (92.9%) compared with ldCT (83.3%) and radiography (67.9%), while ldCT demonstrated higher specificity (97.1%) than MRI (86.4%) and radiography (72.7%). LdCT achieved the highest diagnostic accuracy (92%) among the three modalities, surpassing radiography (71%) and being comparable to MRI (89%). In the subgroup of patients with whole spine imaging, the combination of MRI and ldCT SIJ had the best diagnostic accuracy, reaching 93%. Including SIJ ldCT in addition to SIJ MRI further improved specificity (86.7% vs. 73.3%) with unchanged sensitivity (100%), while incorporating SIJ MRI alongside SIJ ldCT further improved sensitivity from 83% to 100%, with a modest decrease in specificity (86.7% vs. 93.3%). However, incorporating spine MRI/ldCT alongside SIJ MRI/ldCT did not further improve sensitivity or specificity in discriminating axial involvement in PsA patients. Conclusion: LdCT demonstrated superior diagnostic performance in distinguishing axial involvement in PsA patients compared to MRI or radiography, although MRI was more sensitive for detecting active sacroiliitis. The highest diagnostic performance was achieved with both MRI and ldCT of the SIJ. Additional spine imaging did not further increase diagnostic performance.

Background Unlike axial spondyloarthritis, no classification criteria exist for axial psoriatic arthritis (axPsA). In 2021, the Assessment of SpondyloArthritis International Society (ASAS) revised the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) criteria for active sacroiliitis (2021 criteria: bone marrow edema [BME] present in [Formula: see text]4 sacroiliac joint [SIJ] quadrants or [Formula: see text]3 consecutive SIJ slices[1]). This study aimed to compare the utility of this new cut-off in discriminating PsA patients with/without axPsA versus the 2009 ASAS criteria[2] for active-MRI-SIJ (BME [Formula: see text] 2 consecutive slices or [Formula: see text]1 location in a single slice). Methods Consecutive patients who fulfilled the classification criteria for PsA were recruited into this cross-sectional study, regardless of back pain. Sixty-seven patients underwent radiography (including pelvis, cervical/thoracic/lumbar-spine) and MRI-SIJ. Additionally, 47 underwent whole-spine MRI. AxPsA diagnosis was based on clinical information and imaging findings, as determined by an expert rheumatologist and a radiologist, and used as the reference standard. Two independent readers evaluated the MRI images based on two criteria for active sacroiliitis (BME cut-off: [Formula: see text] 4[1] vs [Formula: see text] 2[2]) and spondylitis (BME cut-off: [Formula: see text] 5[3] vs [Formula: see text] 3[4]). The agreement between the two MRI BME cut-offs for active sacroiliitis/spondylitis and the reference standard was evaluated. Results Sixty-seven patients (mean age: 47±12 years, 44 (65.7%) male, psoriasis and PsA disease duration: 13.5±10.3 and 3.8±6.1 years respectively) were recruited (Table 1). Twenty-three (34.3%) were diagnosed with axPsA, including 13 (56.5%) with radiographic sacroiliitis and 10 (43.5%) with non-radiographic axPsA. 12/67 (17.9%) had active MRI-sacroiliitis based on the 2021 ASAS criteria, while 4/47 (8.5%) had spondylitis based on the 2016 proposed definition[3]. Compared with the reference standard, the agreement increased after applying a more stringent threshold to define active sacroiliitis (BME cut-off: [Formula: see text] 4 vs [Formula: see text] 2; Kappa: 0.514 vs 0.392, respectively; Fig. 1A-B). The agreement with the reference standard further increased by applying a more stringent criteria for active spondylitis in addition to active sacroiliitis (BME cut-off for MRI-SIJ and spine: [Formula: see text] 4 and [Formula: see text] 5 vs [Formula: see text] 2 and [Formula: see text] 3; Kappa: 0.717 vs 0.342, respectively; Fig. 1C-D), resulting in higher specificity (active-sacroiliitis: 97.7% vs 81.8%; active-sacroiliitis and/or spondylitis: 100% vs 72.7%) and higher positive predictive value (91.7% vs 61.9%; 100% vs 50.0%, respectively). Conclusion At least four BME lesions on MRI-SIJ and five inflammatory lesions on MRI-spine allow acceptable discrimination of axPsA and no axPsA while assuring [Formula: see text]95% specificity.

Interleukin-37 (IL-37) is unique in the IL-1 family since it broadly suppresses innate immunity and elevates in humans with inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. IL-37 shows definite groups and transcripts for human IL37 gene, but it is still not completely understood the effect and mechanisms of inflammatory response in endothelial cells. It is well accepted that endothelial dysfunction caused by inflammation is a key initiating event in atherosclerotic plaque formation, which leads to the occurrence and development of the cardiovascular adverse events in clinical since the inflammatory responses of endothelial cells could induce and enhance the deposition of extensive lipid and the formation of atherosclerotic plaque in the intima. Thus, it is essential to investigate the role and potential mechanisms in endothelial inflammatory response to prevent the formation and development of many cardiovascular diseases including atherosclerosis. So far, the recent studies have revealed that IL-37 is able to inhibit inflammatory response by suppressing the TLR2-NF-κB-ICAM-1 pathway intracellularly in human coronary artery endothelial cells (HCAECs). Further, the role of IL-37 may be related to the IL-18 pathway extracellularly and involved in the adhesion and transmigration of neutrophils in HCAECs.

Based on conceptual metaphors, this paper firstly screens and classifies the main features of the original corpus to determine whether it has metaphorical features. Metaphor, as a rhetorical technique, connects abstract concepts with concrete images. Then, each metaphorical corpus is assembled by a discriminator, and the conceptual structures and features mapped from the original corpus are combined with those in the target domain to form a new discourse structure. Finally, the entire generated corpus is annotated and cognitive analysis is performed according to the annotated classes. It was found that the green health concept plays an important role in the news discourse, especially with the biological environment, which accounts for an average of 66% of the reported resources, and news reports about the green health concept have a high reading volume, with an average of 2950 times per month. This indicates that the public has a high level of concern about green health and is willing to actively obtain relevant information. This is important for promoting the communication effect of bioenvironmental protection and provides strong support for promoting sustainable development and ecological balance. Abstract Two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheet membranes hold promise for exact molecular transfer due to their structural diversity and well-defined in-plane nanochannels. However, achieving precise regulation of stacking modes between neighboring nanosheets in membrane applications and understanding its influence on separation performance remains unrevealed and challenging. Here, we propose a strategy for accurately controlling the stacking modes of MOF nanosheets via linker polarity regulation. Both theoretical calculations and experimental results demonstrate that a high linker polarity promotes neighboring nanosheets to a maximum AB stacking due to steric hindrance effects, leading to a controlled effective pore size of the membrane and consequently to improved molecular sieving. Among series of CuBDC-based 2D MOFs with different linkers, the CuBDC-NO2 nanosheet membranes exhibit a reduced effective stacking aperture of 0.372 nm, yielding H2 permeance of 4.44 × 10−7 mol m−2 s−1 Pa−1 with a high H2/CO2 and H2/CH4 selectivity of 266 and 536, respectively. This work represents the in-depth investigation of the accurate tuning of MOF nanosheet stacking in the field of 2D materials, offering more perspectives for broader applications with universality for various 2D materials.

Vetulicolians are an enigmatic phylum of extinct Cambrian marine invertebrates. They are particularly diverse in the Chengjiang Biota of China, but representatives have been recovered from other Fossil-Lagerstätten (Cambrian Stage 3-Drumian). These organisms are characterized by a bipartite body, which is split into an anterior section and a posterior segmented section connected by a narrow constriction. Here we report new material of the genus Pomatrum from the Cambrian Balang Biota (Series 2, Stage 4) of Hunan, southern China. This is the first discovery of this vetulicolian outside of the Chengjiang Biota (Series 2, Stage 3) and the first report of vetulicolians from the Balang Biota. This finding not only suggests that this group had a wider spatial and temporal distribution than previously known, but also adds information to the overall biodiversity of the Balang Biota—one of the most important Stage 4 fossil deposits known from Gondwana.

Abstract Tin dioxide is regarded as an alternative anode material rather than graphite due to its high theoretical specific capacity. Modification with carbon is a typical strategy to mitigate the volume expansion effect of SnO2 during the charge process. Strengthening the interface bonding is crucial for improving the electrochemical performance of SnO2/C composites. Here, SnO2-embedded reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite with a low graphene content of approximately 5 wt.% was in situ synthesized via a cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-assisted hydrothermal method. The structural integrity of the SnO2/rGO composite is significantly improved by optimizing the Sn–O–C electronic structure with CTAB, resulting a reversible capacity of 598 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles at a current density of 1 A g−1. CTAB-assisted synthesis enhances the rate performance and cyclic stability of tin dioxide/graphene composites, and boosts their application as the anode materials for the next-generation lithium-ion batteries.

Thermal responses of the metal materials subjected to intense laser irradiation are complicated due to the phase change in the melting process. In order to simplify this problem, previous studies usually ignored the liquid phase or took the usage of finite element method, which limited the achievement of theoretical breakthroughs. In the present study, a one-dimensional heat transfer model with consideration of phase change was established to describe the melting process of the metal materials caused by a constant intense laser beam. The governing equations with three domains were constructed in the piecewise form: the liquid phase region (melted already), the solid phase region (unmelted yet) and the melting region. The limited discretization method was employed to describe the moving of the soli-liquid interface and the energy exchange. The piecewise governing equations in liquid and solid region were solved separately and analytically by means of the Green's function method, and the calculation result was verified by the finite element simulation. The results of the analytical model were in good agreement with those of the finite element simulation, and the maximal prediction errors of the temperature field prediction between the theoretical model and FE simulation is limited to 2.8 %. In addition, the influences of heat source intensity, material heat conductivity, latent heat on the melting process were discussed in detail. The analytical and simulation results reveal that the semi-analytical solution in piecewise for 1-D laser melting process can be successfully used to reflect the dynamic temperature response of the metal materials and the movement of the solid-liquid interface. This work is of guiding significance for the analytical solution of the multi-dimensional melting process of the metal materials under the fixed and continuous laser beams.

Pectocaris species are intermediate- to large-sized Cambrian bivalved arthropods. Previous studies have documented Pectocaris exclusively from the Cambrian Series 2 Stage 3 Chengjiang biota in Yu’anshan Formation, Chiungchussu Stage in SW China. In this study, we report Pectocaris paraspatiosa sp. nov., and three other previously known Pectocaris from the Xiazhuang section in Kunming, which belongs to the Hongjingshao Formation and is a later phase within Cambrian Stage 3 than the Yu’anshan Formation. The new species can be distinguished from its congeners by the sparsely arranged endopodal endites and the morphologies of the abdomen, telson, and telson processes. We interpret P. paraspatiosa sp. nov. as a filter-feeder and a powerful swimmer adapted to shallow, agitated environments. Comparison among the Pectocaris species reinforces previous views that niche differentiation had been established among the congeneric species based on morphological differentiation. Our study shows the comprehensive occurrences of Pectocaris species outside the Chengjiang biota for the first time. With a review of the shared fossil taxa of Chengjiang and Xiaoshiba biotas, we identify a strong biological connection between the Yu’anshan and Hongjingshao Formations.

Abstract Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common malignancy worldwide. It is well known that lipid metabolism reprogramming contributes to the tumor progression. However, the lipid metabolic alterations and potential remodeling mechanism underlying the chemoresistance of CRC remain largely unclear. In this study, we compared the gene expression profiles of chemoresistant versus control CRC cells from the GEO database and identified a key factor, Glycerol‐3‐phosphate acyltransferase 3 (GPAT3), that promotes lipid droplet (LD) production and confers chemoresistance of CRC. With applying of HPLC–MS and molecular dynamics simulation, we also demonstrated that the activity of lysophosphatidic acid synthesis by GPAT3 was dependent on its acetylation at K316 site. In particular, GPAT3‐mediated LD accumulation inhibited immunogenic cell death of tumor, and thus facilitated CD8+ T‐cell exhaustion and malignant progression in mouse xenografts and hepatic‐metastasis tumors in CRC patients. High GPAT3 expression turned CRC cells into nonimmunogenic cells after (Oxaliplatin) Oxa treatment, which was supported by a decrease in cytotoxic IFN‐γ release and CD8+ T‐cell exhaustion. In conclusion, these findings revealed the role of GPAT3‐associated LD accumulation, which conferred a malignant phenotype (chemoresistance) and regulated the tumor microenvironment of CRC. These results suggest that GPAT3 is a potential target to enhance CRC chemosensitivity and develop novel therapeutic interventions.

Abstract Tuning the coordination structures of metal sites is intensively studied to improve the performances of single‐atom site catalysts (SASC). However, the pore structure of SASC, which is highly related to the accessibility of active sites, has received little attention. In this work, single‐atom ZnN4 sites embedded in P‐functionalized carbon with hollow‐wall and 3D ordered macroporous structure (denoted as H‐3DOM‐ZnN4/P‐C) are constructed. The creation of hollow walls in ordered macroporous structures can largely increase the external surface area to expose more active sites. The introduction of adjacent P atoms can optimize the electronic structure of ZnN4 sites through long‐rang regulation to enhance the intrinsic activity and selectivity. In the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction, H‐3DOM‐ZnN4/P‐C exhibits high CO Faradaic efficiency over 90% in a wide potential window (500 mV) and a large turnover frequency up to 7.8 × 104 h−1 at −1.0 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, much higher than its counterparts without the hierarchically ordered structure or P‐functionalization.

The dynamic recrystallization (DRX) behavior and microstructure evolution of medium-Mn (0.15C–10Mn) steel were investigated through isothermal hot compression tests. The flow stress–strain curves and microstructure analysis, in wide ranges of temperatures (900–1150 °C) and strain rates (10−3 - 1 s−1), were employed to establish constitutive equations and a grain size evolution model. Since the material constants were calculated based on polynomial function of strains, strain compensation was introduced into constitutive analysis. Comparison and verification showed that the constitutive equation had a high predictive ability. The correlation coefficient and average absolute relative error were 0.99 and 4.46%, respectively, which confirm the accuracy and guidance of the model. Metallographic observation was used to implement the grain size evolution analysis of the medium-Mn steel. Microstructure evolution was characterized with a gradual increase in average recrystallized grain size and an obvious expansion in the range of grain size distribution with both deformation temperature and strain rate, which were attributed to the competition between nucleation and grain boundary migration. Besides, a grain size evolution model was established to analyze the microstructure evolution.

The Cambrian Radiation represents one of the largest diversification events in Earth history. While the resulting taxonomic diversity is exceptional, relatively few of these novel species can be traced outside the boundaries of a single palaeocontinent. Many of those species with cosmopolitan distributions were likely active swimmers, presenting opportunity and means to conquer new areas, but this would not have been the case for sessile organisms. Herpetogaster is a lower to middle Cambrian (Series 2–Miaolingian, Stage 3–Wuliuan) genus of sessile, stalked, filter-feeding deuterostomes with two species, H. collinsi and H. haiyanensis, known respectively from Laurentia and Gondwana. Here, we expand the distribution of H. collinsi to Gondwana with newly discovered specimens from the Balang Formation of Hunan, China. This discovery raises questions on the origin of the genus and how sessile organisms were able to disperse over such a broad distance in the lower Cambrian. As Herpetogaster has been recovered at the base of the Ambulacrarian tree in recent phylogenies, a planktonic larval stage is suggested, which implies, that the last common ancestor of the Ambulacraria might have already had planktonic larvae or that such larvae developed multiple times within the Ambulacraria.

The conversion of solar energy into hydrogen using photocatalysts is a pivotal solution to the ongoing energy and environmental challenges. In this study, inverse opal (IO) ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) with varying pore sizes is synthesized for the first time via a template method. The experimental results indicate that the constructed inverse opal ZnIn2S4 has a unique photonic bandgap, and its slow photon effect can enhance the interaction between light and matter, thereby improving the efficiency of light utilization. ZnIn2S4 with voids of 200 nm (ZIS–200) achieved the highest hydrogen production rate of 14.32 μ mol h−1. The normalized rate with a specific surface area is five times higher than that of the broken structures (B–ZIS), as the red edge of ZIS–200 is coupled with the intrinsic absorption edge of the ZIS. This study not only developed an approach for constructing inverse opal multi–metallic sulfides, but also provides a new strategy for enriching efficient ZnIn2S4–based photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution from water.

Non-invasive thermal therapy for subcutaneous tumors with the assistance of gold nanoparticles and surface cooling measures was proposed in the present study. To achieve real-time monitoring of 3-D temperature distribution and accurate measurement of thermal response, we developed a theoretical approach in which the dual-phase-lag (DPL) biological heat transfer model and Henriques' burn estimation model were employed. A closed-form solution for temperature distribution in the skin tissue can be obtained from this new model by employing the Green's function method. In addition, the influences of the embedment of gold nanoparticles, surface cooling, and non-Fourier effects on the temperature, thermal damage, and size of the burnt region were discussed in detail. The present model performs well in addressing the difficult issue of temperature and burn prediction inside human tissue. It is found that the combination of gold nanoparticles and surface cooling can concentrate thermal empyrosis in the subcutaneous tumor to enhance tumor elimination and protect both skin and deeper healthy tissue. This study provides theoretical support for the improvement and development of laser thermotherapy for subcutaneous tumors.

Objective: Meniscus tear is a common problem in sports trauma, and its imaging diagnosis mainly relies on MRI. To improve the diagnostic accuracy and efficiency, a deep learning model was employed in this study and the identification efficiency was evaluated. Methods: Standard knee MRI images from 924 individual patients were used to complete the training, validation and testing processes. Mask regional convolutional neural network (R–CNN) was used to build the deep learning network structure, and ResNet50 was adopted to develop the backbone network. The deep learning model was trained and validated with a dataset containing 504 and 220 patients, respectively. Internal testing was performed based on a dataset of 200 patients, and 180 patients from 8 hospitals were regarded as an external dataset for model validation. Additionally, 40 patients who were diagnosed by the arthroscopic surgery were enrolled as the final test dataset. Results: After training and validation, the deep learning model effectively recognized healthy and injured menisci. Average precision for the three types of menisci (healthy, torn and degenerated menisci) ranged from 68% to 80%. Diagnostic accuracy for healthy, torn and degenerated menisci was 87.50%, 86.96%, and 84.78%, respectively. Validation results from external dataset demonstrated that the accuracy of diagnosing torn and intact meniscus tear through 3.0T MRI images was higher than 80%, while the accuracy verified by arthroscopic surgery was 87.50%. Conclusion: Mask R–CNN effectively identified and diagnosed meniscal injuries, especially for tears that occurred in different parts of the meniscus. The recognition ability was admirable, and the diagnostic accuracy could be further improved with increased training sample size. Therefore, this deep learning model showed great potential in diagnosing meniscus injuries. Translational potential of this article: Deep learning model exerted unique effect in terms of reducing doctors’ workload and improving diagnostic accuracy. Injured and healthy menisci could be more accurately identified and classified based on training and learning datasets. This model could also distinguish torn from degenerated menisci, making it an effective tool for MRI-assisted diagnosis of meniscus injuries in clinical practice.

Dual-wavelength emission materials can provide fluorescence intensity ratio technology with self-calibration features; their fabrication however, remains a challenge. Here, authors design a dual-wavelength emitting material Li2ZnSiO4:Mn2+ and present a wearable optical fibre temperature sensor, functioning in both contact and noncontact modes.

Arabidopsis Casparian strip membrane domain proteins (CASPs) form a transmembrane scaffold to recruit lignin biosynthetic enzymes for Casparian strip (CS) formation. Rice is a semi-aquatic plant with a more complex root structure than Arabidopsis to adapt its growing conditions, where the different deposition of lignin and suberin is crucial for adaptive responses. Here, we observed the structure of rice primary and small lateral roots (SLRs), particularly the deposition patterns of lignin and suberin in wild type and Oscasp1 mutants. We found that the appearance time and structure of CS in the roots of rice are different from those of Arabidopsis and observed suberin deposition in the sclerenchyma in wild type roots. Rice CASP1 is highly similar to AtCASPs, but its expression is concentrated in SLR tips and can be induced by salt stress especially in the steles. The loss of OsCASP1 function alters the expression of the genes involved in suberin biosynthesis and the deposition of suberin in the endodermis and sclerenchyma and leads to delayed CS formation and uneven lignin deposition in SLRs. These different depositions may alter nutrient uptake, resulting in ion imbalance in plant, withered leaves, fewer tillers, and reduced tolerance to salt stress. Our findings suggest that OsCASP1 could play an important role in nutrient homeostasis and adaptation to the growth environment.

Abstract Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is one of the most daunting diseases, low toxicity and efficient approaches are in urgent demand. Herein, we developed degradable mesoporous manganese carbonate nanocubes (MnCO3 NCs), incorporated with survivin shRNA-expressing plasmid DNA (iSur-pDNA) and riboflavin (Rf), namely MRp NCs, for synergistic TNBC therapy. The MnCO3, itself, could generate O2 and CO2 under H2O2 and thus relieve the hypoxia and acidic tumor microenvironment (TME). Furthermore, the MnCO3 NCs exhibited high Rf loading capacity and iSur-pDNA delivery ability after polyethyleneimine modification. Specifically, MRp NCs decompose in TME, meanwhile they deprived the endogenous expression of survivin gene and significantly amplified the generation of reactive oxygen species after exposure to LED light, resulting in serious tumor destruction. The multifunctional MRp NCs with LED light-driven characters are able to provide a high efficiency, low toxicity and promising strategy for TNBC therapy.

IntroductionNonobstructive azoospermia (NOA) is a common and severe form of male infertility. Microdissection testicular sperm extraction (microTESE) combined with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is an optimal treatment for men with NOA. However, the outcomes and affecting factors of ICSI for NOA patients with different etiologies receiving microTESE treatment are still unclear.MethodsA total of 335 NOA patients undergoing microTESE from January 2017 to December 2021 were included in this retrospective analysis. The patients were divided into five groups (idiopathic, Klinefelter syndrome (KS), Y chromosome microdeletions (YCMDs), cryptorchidism and mumps orchitis) according to the etiologies. The clinical characteristics and outcomes of microTESE and ICSI were collected and comparisons were performed between clinical characteristics of patients who had successful sperm retrieval (SSR) and sperm retrieval failure (SRF). In addition, relationships between clinical characteristics and rates of SSR were explored by Kendall correlation analysis.ResultsThe overall SSR rate was 40.90%. SSR rate of the idiopathic group (31.22%) was the lowest and was much lower than that of other groups (KS: 48.65%, 28/58; YCMDs: 60.87%; cryptorchidism: 80.95%; mumps orchitis: 75.00%). The overall fertilization rate was 72.26%. No group differences were found among five groups (idiopathic: 73.91%; KS: 71.43%; YCMDs: 64.29%; cryptorchidism: 70.59%; mumps orchitis: 77.78%). The overall clinical pregnancy rate was 66.67%. No group differences were found among five groups (idiopathic: 68.63%; KS: 65.00%; YCMDs: 44.44%; cryptorchidism: 66.67%; mumps orchitis: 85.71%). The overall live birth rate was 66.67%. No group differences were found among five groups (idiopathic: 71.43%; KS: 53.85%; YCMDs: 50.00%; cryptorchidism: 75.00%; mumps orchitis: 66.67%). For SSR patients, the average age was significantly lower in the idiopathic group, while the average testicular volume was significantly greater in the cryptorchidism and mumps orchitis groups. However, no significant differences were found in the level of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone (T) between patients who had SSR and SRF. In addition, negative relationships were found between age and rates of SSR in idiopathic NOA patients while positive relationships were found between testis volume and rates of SSR in patients with cryptorchidism and mumps orchitis.ConclusionPatients with idiopathic NOA had lowest SSR. In addition, the age in idiopathic NOA patients was a predictor for SSR while testicular volume in NOA patients with cryptorchidism and mumps orchitis was a predictor for SSR. However, the relationships between clinical characteristics and clinical outcomes in NOA patients were preliminary, and further validation needed to be carried out in a larger sample to increase statistical capacity before a definitive conclusion could be drawn.

Abstract Thermal ablation is an efficient method of medical treatment, such as cancer therapy, wound closure, laser cutting, freckle removal and other treatments. In order to guarantee the curative effect and the safety of the patients, the thermal response of the tissue which is subjected to the heat source need to be carefully monitored. However, it is too difficult to achieve real-time monitoring on the full-field temperature. In the present study, efforts were made to build up a theoretical model for the prediction of the thermal response in the human skin. The Dual-Phase-Lag (DPL) bio-heat transfer model and the Henrique’s burn assessment model were employed to describe the interaction of multi-pulse heat source and the skin. The repeated multi-pulse laser is a common heat source in the thermal treatment and the thermal responses of the skin would be complicated under the common effects of the non-Fourier effects and the multi-pulse source. The Green’s function approach was used to solve the governing equations analytically. The closed-form solution for the temperature distribution of the skin was obtained and the thermal damage was estimated based on the temperature results. The influences of the biological parameters (the phase lags of the heat flux and the temperature gradient) and the heat source parameters (the pulse number and the duty ratio) on the temperature distribution, the burn degree and the irreversible burn depth of the irradiated region were discussed.

Abstract Background The processabilities and mechanical properties of natural rubber depend greatly on its molecular weight (MW) and molecular weight distribution (MWD). However, the mechanisms underlying the regulation of molecular weight during rubber biosynthesis remain unclear. Results In the present study, we determined the MW and particle size of latex from 1-year-old virgin trees and 30-year-old regularly tapped trees of the Hevea clones Reyan7-33–97 and RRIM600. The results showed that both the MW and the particle size of latex varied between these two clones and increased with tree age. Latex from RRIM600 trees had a smaller average particle size than that from Reyan7-33–97 trees of the same age. In 1-year-old trees, the Reyan7-33–97 latex displayed a slightly higher MW than that of RRIM600, whereas in 30-year-old trees, the RRIM600 latex had a significantly higher MW than the Reyan7-33–97 latex. Comparative analysis of the transcriptome profiles indicated that the average rubber particle size is negatively correlated with the expression levels of rubber particle associated proteins, and that the high-MW traits of latex are closely correlated with the enhanced expression of isopentenyl pyrophosphate (IPP) monomer-generating pathway genes and downstream allylic diphosphate (APP) initiator-consuming non-rubber pathways. By bioinformatics analysis, we further identified a group of transcription factors that potentially regulate the biosynthesis of IPP. Conclusions Altogether, our results revealed the potential regulatory mechanisms involving gene expression variations in IPP-generating pathways and the non-rubber isoprenoid pathways, which affect the ratios and contents of IPP and APP initiators, resulting in significant rubber MW variations among same-aged trees of the Hevea clones Reyan7-33–97 and RRIM600. Our findings provide a better understanding of rubber biosynthesis and lay the foundation for genetic improvement of rubber quality in H. brasiliensis.

To overcome rubber tree (RT) tissue culture explant source limitations, the current study aimed to establish a new Hevea brasiliensis somatic embryogenesis (SE) system, laying the technical foundation for the establishment of an axillary-bud-based seedling regeneration system. In this study, in vitro plantlets of Hevea brasiliensis Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences 917 (CATAS 917) were used as the experimental materials. Firstly, the optimum conditions for axillary bud swelling were studied; then, the effects of phenology, the swelling time of axillary buds (ABs), and medium of embryogenic callus induction were studied. Plantlets were obtained through somatic embryogenesis. Flow cytometry, inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR molecular marker) and chromosome karyotype analysis were used to study the genetic stability of regenerated plants along with budding seedlings (BSs) and secondary somatic embryo seedlings (SSESs) as the control. The results show that the rubber tree’s phenology period was mature, and the axillary bud induction rate was the highest in the 2 mg/L 6-benzyladenine (6-BA) medium (up to 85.83%). Later, 3-day-old swelling axillary buds were used as explants for callogenesis and somatic embryogenesis. The callus induction rate was optimum in MH (Medium in Hevea) + 1.5 mg/L 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) + 1.5 mg/L 1-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) + 1.5 mg/L Kinetin (KT) + 70 g/L sucrose (56.55%). The regenerated plants were obtained after the 175-day culture of explants through callus induction, embryogenic callus induction, somatic embryo development, and plant regeneration. Compared with the secondary somatic embryo seedling control, axillary bud regeneration plants (ABRPs) were normal diploid plants at the cellular and molecular level, with a variation rate of 7.74%.

Recently, the development of composite materials composed of magnetic materials and MXene has attracted significant attention. However, the thickness and microwave absorption performance of the composite is still barely satisfactory. In this work, the C-N@NiFe2O4@MXene/Ni nanocomposites were successfully synthesized in situ by hydrothermal and calcination methods. Benefiting from the introduction of the carbon-nitrogen(C-N) network structure, the overall dielectric properties are improved effectively, consequently reducing the thickness of the composite while maintaining excellent absorption performance. As a result, the minimum reflection loss of C-N@NiFe2O4@MXene/Ni can reach −50.51 dB at 17.3 GHz at an ultralow thickness of 1.5 mm, with an effective absorption bandwidth of 4.95 GHz (13.02–18 GHz). This research provides a novel strategy for materials to maintain good absorption performance at an ultralow thickness level.

Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate the biomechanics on the knee components caused by degenerative and radial meniscal tears and resultant meniscectomy. Methods: A detailed finite element model of the knee joint with bones, cartilages, menisci and main ligaments was constructed from a combination of computed tomography and magnetic resonance images. Degenerative and radial tears of both menisci and resultant medial meniscectomy were used and two different kinds of simulations, the vertical and the anterior load, mimicking the static stance and slight flexion simulations, were applied on the model. The compressive and shear stress and meniscus extrusion were evaluated and compared. Results: Generally, both degenerative and radial tears lead to increased peak compressive and shear stress of both cartilages and menisci and large meniscus extrusion, and the medial meniscal tear induced larger value of stress and extrusion than the lateral meniscal tear. The peak stress and meniscus extrusion further elevated after the medial meniscus meniscectomy. Distribution of stress was shifted from the intact hemi joint to the injured hemi joint with either medial or lateral meniscal tear. Conclusion: Our finite element model provides a realistic three-dimensional knee model to investigate the effects of degenerative and radial meniscal tears and resultant meniscectomy on the stress distribution of the knee. The stress was increased in meniscal tears and increased significantly when meniscectomy was performed. Increased meniscus extrusion may explain the mechanism for higher stress on the components of the knee. The translational potential of this article: Meniscal tears are the most common damage associated to the menisci, and meniscectomy is often performed to relieve the pain and instability of the knee. The results of our study indicated increased stress on cartilages and menisci, which may lead to early onset of osteoarthritis. Abstract Background Meniscal horns are important structures of meniscus, and longitudinal tears of these places could significantly change the load distribution among the knee joint. Few studies concerned the stress concentrated on bones, which may induce the osteonecrosis of subchondral bone. The goal of this study was to construct a finite element (FE) model with high fidelity of the knee joint and evaluate the biomechanical changes of load distribution of components after longitudinal tears of the horns of meniscus. Methods Computed tomography and magnetic resonance images were used to develop the FE model, and two different kinds of simulations, the vertical and the anterior load, mimicking the static stance and slight flexion simulations, were applied after longitudinal tears of the horns of meniscus. Results Significantly elevated peak compressive and shear stress was observed on the menisci, cartilages, and subchondral bones, and enlarged meniscus extrusion was noticed. Between all the four types of longitudinal tears investigated in this study, longitudinal tears at the posterior horn of the medial meniscus were found to be the most significant. Conclusions These findings showed that longitudinal tears of the meniscal horns lead to increased magnitude and changed distribution of stress and indicated the important role of posterior horn of medial meniscus. This may contribute to the mechanism between meniscal tears and spontaneous subchondral bone osteonecrosis.

Water electrolysis is a promising option for pure hydrogen production, but it is limited by the high cost. Developing superb and low‐cost electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is critical for cost reduction. Heterostructures are demonstrated with excellent HER activities, but still inferior to commercial Pt/C. Herein, vacancy type of defects is engineered into the interface of CoP3/Ni2P heterostructure by a plasma strategy. The as‐synthesized defective CoP3/Ni2P exhibits lower overpotentials than Pt/C. Its specific activity at overpotential of 50 mV is ≈2‐fold and 1.7‐fold higher than that of Pt/C in acidic and alkaline media, respectively. For water electrocatalysis, its current density reaches 215 mA cm−2 at 2.0 V, even satisfying the target of practical industrial water splitting. Theoretical calculations indicate that the interfacial defects reconstruct the electronic structure and accelerate the charge transfer, facilitating the adsorption of reactant and lowering the energy barrier of water dissociation, thereby improving HER activities.

Reasonable structural design and composition control are the dominant factors for tuning the electromagnetic absorbing properties of materials. In this paper, microspheres composed of NiO, Ni, and Co3O4 nanoparticles (NCMO) were successfully synthesized using a mild oxidation method. Benefiting from the multi-component composition and a unique microstructure, the RLmin of CNMO can reach −46.8 dB at 17 GHz, with an effective absorption bandwidth of 4.1 GHz (13.9–18 GHz). The absorbing properties and the absorbing mechanism analysis showed that the microsphere-structured NCMO composed of multi-component nanoparticles enhanced the interface polarization, thereby improving the absorption performance. This research provides a new avenue for MOF-derived oxide materials with excellent electromagnetic wave absorbing properties.

Abstract Background To explore the therapeutic effect and the biomechanical mechanism of 3D printing individualized heel cup in treating of plantar heel pain. Methods The clinical effect was evaluated by plantar pressure analysis and pain assessment in participants. Its biomechanical mechanism of protecting the plantar heel was explored using finite element simulation. Results The individualized heel cup could support and protect the osseous structure and soft tissue of plantar heel while walking and jogging, as well as significantly reduce the self-reported pain after being worn for 4 weeks. The nylon heel cup could alter the load concentration of the heel as well as decrease the load affected on plantar fascia and calcaneus bone. It also provided an obvious support for heel pad. Conclusion To summarize, the 3D printed individualized heel cup can be used as an effective method for the treatment of plantar heel pain.

Signal progression has been proven as an effective way to improve the operational efficiency of traffic signals at local arterial corridors. Conventional two-way progression models have shown their promising in providing desirable green bandwidth to two-way through traffic along the arterial. However, they may not offer an effective progression plan when a long arterial contains many intersections. Under such condition, it is critical to divide the arterial corridor into a set of subgroups for progression design. Since progression effectiveness is significantly impacted by the way an arterial is decomposed, conducting arterial decomposition as a separated step may keep the result from optimality. To tackle this issue, a novel progressive model is developed to concurrently determine the arterial decomposition strategy and optimize the resulting signal progression plan within each subgroup. With an integrated control objective function, the proposed model can minimize the required number of subgroups while satisfying the operational need (i.e., a minimum bandwidth is required). Also, the proposed model is formulated with a mixed-integer-linear-programming technique that can guarantee a global optimal solution. A numerical example on a field arterial which consists of 15 signalized intersections has verified the effectiveness of the proposed model.

High-performance lithium ion batteries (LIBs) require electrode material to have an ideal electrode construction which provides fast ion transport, short solid-state ion diffusion, large surface area, and high electric conductivity. Herein, highly porous three-dimensional (3D) aerogels composed of cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4, CFO) nanoparticles (NPs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are prepared using sustainable alginate as the precursor. The key feature of this work is that by using the characteristic egg-box structure of the alginate, metal cations such as Co2+ and Fe3+ can be easily chelated via an ion-exchange process, thus binary CFO are expected to be prepared. In the hybrid aerogels, CFO NPs interconnected by the CNTs are embedded in carbon aerogel matrix, forming the 3D network which can provide high surface area, buffer the volume expansion and offer efficient ion and electron transport pathways for achieving high performance LIBs. The as-prepared hybrid aerogels with the optimum CNT content (20 wt%) delivers excellent electrochemical properties, i.e., reversible capacity of 1033 mAh gâ1 at 0.1 A gâ1 and a high specific capacity of 874 mAh gâ1 after 160 cycles at 1 A gâ1. Abstract In this work, various backbone binders were used in wax-based binder system to formulate zirconia parts by ceramic injection molding (CIM). The effect of different backbone binders on the molding, debinding, and sintering behaviors was investigated. After blending process, the feedstock using multi-polymer components exhibited more homogeneous structure compared with that using the mono-polymer ones due to the synergistic effect of multi-polymers. During solvent debinding, some defects such as “slumping” and “peeling” appeared in the parts containing ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA), but they were not found in the parts with other thermal polymers. Also, as for the parts after sintering, the one using low density polyethylene (LDPE) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) as backbone binders presented a more uniform microstructure with finer zirconia grains among all the investigated compositions, and thus obtained the highest flexural strength (~949 MPa) and relative density (~98.9%).

Various natural and manmade disasters during last decades have highlighted the need of further improving on governmental preparedness to emergency events, and a relief supplies distribution problem named Inventory Slack Routing Problem (ISRP) has received increasing attentions. In an ISRP, inventory slack is defined as the duration between reliefs arriving time and estimated inventory stock-out time. Hence, a larger inventory slack could grant more responsive time in facing of various factors (e.g., traffic congestion) that may lead to delivery lateness. In this study, the relief distribution problem is formulated as an optimization model that maximize the minimum slack among all dispensing sites. To efficiently solve this problem, we propose a two-stage approach to tackle the vehicle routing and relief allocation sub-problems. By analyzing the inter-relations between these two sub-problems, a new objective function considering both delivery durations and dispensing rates of demand sites is applied in the first stage to design the vehicle routes. A hierarchical routing approach and a sweep approach are also proposed in this stage. Given the vehicle routing plan, the relief allocation could be easily solved in the second stage. Numerical experiment with a comparison of multi-vehicle Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) has demonstrated the need of ISRP and the capability of the proposed solution approaches.

To investigate head-brain injuries caused by windshield impact on riders using electric self-balancing scooters (ESS). Numerical vehicle ESS crash scenarios are constructed by combining the finite element (FE) vehicle model and multibody scooter/rider models. Impact kinematic postures of the head-windshield contact under various impact conditions are captured. Then, the processes during head-windshield contact are reconstructed using validated FE head/laminated windshield models to assess the severity of brain injury caused by the head-windshield contact. Governing factors, such as vehicle speed, ESS speed, and the initial orientation of ESS rider, have nontrivial influences over the severity of a rider’s brain injuries. Results also show positive correlations between vehicle speed and head-windshield impact speeds (linear and angular). Meanwhile, the time of head-windshield contact happens earlier when the vehicle speed is faster. According to the intensive study, windshield-head contact speed (linear and angular), impact location on the windshield, and head collision area are found to be direct factors on ESS riders’ brain injuries during an impact. The von Mises stress and shear stress rise when relative contact speed of head-windshield increases. Brain injury indices vary widely when the head impacting the windshield from center to the edge or impacting with different areas.

This paper presents two origin-destination flow estimation models using sampled GPS positions of probe vehicles and link flow counts. The first model, named as SPP model (scaled probe OD as prior OD), uses scaled probe vehicle OD matrix as prior OD matrix and applies conventional generalized least squares (GLS) framework to conduct OD correction using link counts; the second model, PRA model (probe ratio assignment), is an extension of SPP in which the observed link probe ratios are also included as additional information in the OD estimation process. For both models, the study explored a new way to construct assignment matrices directly from sampled probe trajectories to avoid sophisticated traffic assignment process. Then, for performance evaluation, a comprehensive numerical experiment was conducted using simulation dataset. The results showed that when the distribution of probe vehicle ratios is homogeneous among different OD pairs, both proposed models achieved similar degree of improvement compared with the prior OD pattern. However, under the case that the distribution of probe vehicle ratios is heterogeneous across different OD pairs, PRA model achieved more significant reduction on OD flow estimations compared with SPP model. Grounded on both theoretical derivations and empirical tests, the study provided in-depth discussions regarding the strengths and challenges of probe vehicle based OD estimation models.
