Multi-energy synergy systems integrating high-penetration large-scale plug-in electric vehicles, distributed renewable energy generations, and battery energy storage systems have great potential to reduce the reliance of the grid on traditional fossil fuels. However, the random charging characteristics of plug-in electric vehicles and the uncertainty of photovoltaics may impose an additional burden on the grid and affect the supply–demand equilibrium. To address this issue, judicious scheduling optimization offers an effective solution. In this study, considering charge and discharge management of plug-in electric vehicles and intermittent photovoltaics, a novel Multi-energy synergy systems scheduling framework is developed for solving grid instability and unreliability issues. This formulates a large-scale mixed-integer problem, which calls for a powerful and effective optimizer. The new binary level-based learning optimization algorithm is proposed to address nonlinear large-scale high-coupling unit commitment problems. To investigate the feasibility of the proposed scheme, numerical experiments have been carried out considering multiple scales of unit numbers and various scenarios. Finally, the results confirm that the proposed scheduling framework is reasonable and effective in solving unit commitment problems, can achieve 3.3% cost reduction and demonstrates superior performance in handling large-scale energy optimization problems. The integration of plug-in electric vehicles, distributed renewable energy generations, and battery energy storage systems is verified to reduce the output power of 192.72 MW units during peak periods to improve grid stability. Therefore, optimizing energy utilization and distribution will become an indispensable part of future power systems.

As a typical energy-intensive industry, the steel industry is usually equipped with an onsite energy supply system, indicating a strong capability in demand response. To meet the market requirements, the dispatchable electricity generation boundaries of the steel plant need to be evaluated. However, the forecast errors of local steam and electric load make it difficult to achieve accurate dispatchable boundaries. This paper proposes a novel method to evaluate the dispatchable boundaries of the energy supply system. A multi-energy system model is developed to characterize the interactions between the gas, steam, and electrical systems of the steel plant. An adaptive robust optimization framework is used to evaluate the dispatchability under the uncertainty of the steam load and the electricity load. The proposed method is tested using data from a real steel plant in Europe. The results show that the energy supply system can effectively dispatch the power generation capacity but will be constrained by the fuel supply rate and ramp rate of the boiler. The uncertainty of the steam load and electric load will cause the shrink of the dispatchable boundaries.

Nb alloys with high strength and relatively low density are sought for high-temperature applications. However, due to strain softening, conventional Nb alloys often exhibit insufficient high-temperature strengths. Here we report a strategy to design a novel lightweight and thermally-stable Nb alloy by combining the notion of eutectics and refractory carbide. The resulting Nb2MoWC0.96 eutectic alloy exhibits a high-temperature specific compressive strength of 77.2 MPa/·cm3·g1 at 1673 K with a retained engineering plasticity of 37.5%, both are notably higher than the existing Nb and Nb-containing alloys. This work demonstrates that both the strength and plasticity of Nb alloys can be further optimized with refractory carbide and eutectics.

Farming Chinese perch in aquaculture systems with artificial diets is a new method and developing trend. This method of raising Chinese perch has led to outbreaks of new diseases. In 2022, a disease outbreak occurred among farmed Chinese perch fed an artificial diet in Jiangxi Province, China, during which 50% of the fish died. The clinical signs exhibited by the diseased Chinese perch included decreased physical vitality, anorexia, emaciation, and dorsal fin ulceration with white cysts and flocs. Coinfection with ciliate parasites and an oomycete was found. No pathogenic bacteria were isolated from the microbial test, and the viral detection results were negative. After morphological and 18S or 28S rDNA sequence clustering analysis, the parasites were identified as Epistylis wuhanensis and Zoothamnium sp., while the oomycete was identified as Achlya klebsiana. This article discusses the interaction between parasitic and oomycete coinfections in Chinese perch from the perspective of the characteristics of Chinese perch raised with an artificial diet. The relationships between parasites, oomycete, and fish were also briefly discussed. This is the first report of the coinfection of Chinese perch with Epistylis wuhanensis, Zoothamnium sp. and Achlya klebsiana.

During the expansion of a wind farm, the strategic placement of wind turbines can significantly improve wind energy utilization. This study investigates the evolution of wake turbulence in a wind farm after introducing smaller wind turbines within the gaps between larger ones, focusing on aspects such as wind speed, turbulence intensity, and turbulence integral length scale. The flow field conditions are described using parameters like turbulence critical length and power spectral density, as determined through wind tunnel experiments. In these experiments, a single large wind turbine model and nine smaller wind turbine models were used to create a small wind farm unit, and pressure distribution behind the wind turbines was measured under various operating conditions. The results indicate that downstream wind speed deficits intensify as the number of small wind turbines in operation increases. The impact of these smaller turbines varies with height, with a relatively minor effect on the upper blade tip and increasingly adverse effects as you move from the upper blade tip to the lower blade tip. Through an analysis of power spectral density, the contribution of vortex motion to wake turbulence kinetic energy is further quantified. In the far wake region, the number of small wind turbines has a relatively small impact on wind speed fluctuations.

High-performance permanent magnets play an indispensable role in manufacturing highly efficient motors and generators, ultimately contributing to the sustainability of our planet. Achieving high coercivity ( μ _0 H _c ) in hard magnetic materials at or above room temperature without relying on heavy rare-earth elements remains a challenge. Effective strategies for augmenting μ _0 H _c utilizing low-cost materials involve inter-granular addition and the grain-boundary diffusion (GBD) processes. This review provides a comprehensive overview of selected techniques for developing grain-boundary (GB) modification through a specific focus on the reduction of using heavy rare earth (HRE) elements and utilizing cost-effective non-rare earth and light rare earth (LRE) sources for GBD. To date, the successful application of HRE based metals and compounds, and LRE based alloys as diffusion sources has significantly contributed to μ _0 H _c enhancement. Drawing upon global advancements and findings from various research groups, this comprehensive review offers a critical analysis of the fundamentals and progress in GBD processes (GBDPs). Considering the different types of permanent magnets, the GBDPs, based on the diverse diffusion sources and diffusion processes, are thoroughly compared and summarized. This encapsulates the current state of knowledge in the field, providing valuable insights into the ongoing developments in GB modification to improve permanent magnet performance.

Abstract In modern society, system integration that enables multiple subsystems to function as one is emerging in various fields like industry, commerce, and infrastructure. Although it has been proved that integration value could be tapped to the maximum with controllable cost by optimising the integration schemes in certain fields, there is still a lack of a general method for modelling and analysing the process of system integration. To address this need, this paper proposes an analysis framework of system integration. The concepts of integration object, integration strategy, integration time, integration cost and integration value are introduced to describe the integration process. Further, three optimisation models of the local optimisation (OPT1), phase optimisation (OPT2) and integration optimisation (OPT3) are constructed. The proposed framework can also supervise and compare the performance of intermediate processes of different integration schemes. Two case studies in the commerce and energy fields are analysed to illustrate the function of the proposed framework.

This trial aimed to investigate the influence of graded replacing fish meal (D1: 0.00%, D2: 27.27%, and D3: 54.55%) with mixed protein ingredients (i.e., chicken meal, krill meal, fermented soybean meal, and soy protein concentrate) on the growth performance, muscle nutritional composition, blood biochemical indices, gut bacterial community, and transcriptome of Chinese perch. Two hundred seventy Chinese perch were divided into three groups (90 per group) and the diet lasted for 56 days. Results showed that the weight gain rate and specific growth rate were significantly lower, and the feed conversion ratio was significantly higher in the D3 group than in fish fed D1 (P0.05). The muscle crude protein content was highest in the D2 group, and the crude fat content was significantly different in the order: D3 > D1 > D2 (P0.05). The increasing integration of photovoltaic generators (PVGs) and the uneven economic development in different regions may cause the unbalanced spatial-temporal distribution of load demands in an urban distribution network (UDN). This may lead to undesired consequences, including PVG curtailment, load shedding, and equipment inefficiency, etc. Global dynamic reconfiguration provides a promising method to solve those challenges. However, the power flow transfer capabilities for different kinds of switches are diverse, and the willingness of distribution system operators (DSOs) to select them is also different. In this paper, we formulate a multi-objective dynamic reconfiguration optimization model suitable for multi-level switching modes to minimize the operation cost, load imbalance, and the PVG curtailment. The multi-level switching includes feeder-level switching, transformer-level switching, and substation-level switching. A novel load balancing index is devised to quantify the global load balancing degree at different levels. Then, a stochastic programming model based on selected scenarios is established to address the uncertainties of PVGs and loads. Afterward, the fuzzy c-means (FCMs) clustering is applied to divide the time periods of reconfiguration. Further-more, the modified binary particle swarm optimization (BPSO) and Cplex solver are combined to solve the proposed mixed-in-teger second-order cone programming (MISOCP) model. Numerical results based on the 148-node and 297-node systems are obtained to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The area around Poyang Lake is the main aquaculture area in Jiangxi Province, China, and an important base for the supply of freshwater aquatic products. Aquaculture in the Poyang Lake area is severely threatened by diseases caused by bacterial pathogens, and Aeromonas veronii has been the main pathogen in recent years. In this paper, ERIC-PCR genotyping, virulence gene and antimicrobial resistance gene detection, and drug susceptibility tests were carried out on 46 A. veronii isolates obtained from aquaculture systems in the Poyang Lake area from 2016 to 2020. The results showed that the A. veronii strains in the Poyang Lake area had high genetic diversity, and 46 strains produced 36 ERIC genotypes. There were no geographical and temporal differences in the cluster analysis results and no dominant clones. All 13 virulence genes tested were detected, and all isolates had harbored 2 or more virulence genes, with a maximum of 12 virulence genes detected. Among the 22 antimicrobial resistance genes selected, 15 were detected; 97.8% of the isolates contained 2 or more antimicrobial resistance genes, with a maximum of 9 antimicrobial resistance genes. Drug susceptibility tests showed that some strains were resistant to a variety of traditionally effective drugs for Aeromomas, such as enrofloxacin and florfenicol. This study provides a reference for exploring the impact of aquaculture in the Poyang Lake area on public health.

A Co25.1Cr18.8Fe23.3Ni22.6Ta8.5Al1.7 (at. %) eutectic high-entropy alloy (EHEA) consisting of face-centered-cubic (FCC) and C14 Laves phases was produced by powder metallurgy. The EHEA shows an equiaxed morphology that is different from eutectic lamellar structure. Nanometer L12 phase (4–5 nm) further precipitates in FCC matrix. The microstructure is highly stable upon annealing at 1000°C for 100 h, which leads to attractive high-temperature strength. The fracture behaviour is observed to be modified by the equiaxed Laves phase, which contains microcracks induced by multiple dislocation slips. The diversified cracking modes help to relieve stress concentration and therefore enhance ductility at high temperatures.

We developed a eutectic high-entropy alloy (EHEA) with appreciable high-temperature strength-plasticity balance. Structural characterizations of the as-cast sample revealed a lamellar structure with austenite (face-centered-cubic, FCC) and Laves phases. Upon annealing at 873 K, precipitation of nanoscale (Ni, Al, and Zr)-rich L12 phase from the FCC phase took place, which eventually transformed into a martensitic (hexagonal, ε) phase with rearrangement of atomic species. Compressive properties revealed a brittle behavior at temperatures below 873 K, but changed to a ductile behavior with considerable strain hardening at 973 K, due to the formation of a high density of deformation twins observed by transmission electron microscopy.

The use of retired batteries from electric vehicles as a second-life battery energy storage system has been recognized as a way to break the high investment cost limitation of battery energy storage systems with the associated cost reduction of a park-level integrated energy system. The battery degradation and replacements should be further considered in the planning period, especially compared with new battery energy storage systems. Additionally, there is a lack of discussion on utilizing thermal energy storage systems in coordination with second-life battery to reduce degradation. For this reason, an electric/thermal hybrid energy storage system planning method for park-level integrated energy systems with second-life battery utilization is proposed. A cumulative battery life loss calculation model is developed. A bi-level optimal planning model of electric/thermal hybrid energy storage system using second-life batteries, including an upper-level planning model and a lower-level operating model, is proposed. At the upper level, to maximize the net present value during the planning stage, the capacity of the hybrid energy storage system as well as when the second-life battery energy storage system needs to be replaced are optimized. At the lower level, the operation schemes are optimized to obtain the minimum annual operating cost, which are fed back to the upper level. The proposed method considers continuous capacity degradation of second-life batteries and mutually beneficial relationships between thermal energy storage and second-life batteries. Finally, a case study demonstrates the economic effectiveness and battery service life improvement of the proposed planning method.

Supplied with electricity and natural gas, local energy systems (LESs) with gas-fired generations increase the operational flexibility of urban energy supply. However, the increasing usage of these LESs may lead to adverse impacts on the urban energy system supply via power and/or gas distribution networks. Dynamic interactions between the LESs, electricity, and gas networks subject to different disturbances need to be investigated due to the complexity of the problem. To address this issue, this paper first presents the topology and operating mode of the LESs as well as the relationship with power and gas networks. Second, an extended microturbine model is developed to reflect the nonlinear dynamic propagation of disturbances between the two networks. A general model of the interconnected LESs is developed to analyze the mutual impacts between gas and electricity networks under different modes. Finally, an iterative method is proposed to simulate the mechanism of disturbance propagation between the electricity network, gas network, and LESs, incorporating the impacts of loads and renewables. Case studies reveal that simultaneous regulation of multiple gas-fired generators would reduce the minimum pressure to 50% of the steady-state value. The resulted pressure drop is even lower than the case with higher total gas demand but only one gas-fired generator regulated. Moreover, it is shown that state fluctuations of the gas system last 20 times longer than the electricity system within the LESs. The electrical link between LESs, such as soft opening point with shorter response time, could smooth the fluctuations.

During the heating period in Northeast China, the electricity generated by Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plants has caused a large amount of wind power curtailment. To avoid this curtailment, Heat Storages (HS) and Electric Boilers (EB) are being widely applied to CHP plants. However, the effectiveness of HS and EB on the curtailment of wind power has still not been well evaluated. This paper proposes a new evaluation method consisting of an operation boundary model and an internal coordinated operation model for each flexible CHP plant with HS and EB. Then a system power balance model based on hour-by-hour analysis is established to determine the wind power integration, down-regulation subsidy and the utilization degree of the flexible equipment. The models are validated by using field measured data of a province in China. The results show that the capacity change of the EB has a bigger impact on the down-regulation subsidy than that of the HS, while the EB is more effective when the level of wind power integration is high.

In recent years, China's new energy storage application on a large scale has shown a good development trend; a variety of energy storage technologies are widely used in renewable energy development, consumption, integrated intelligent energy systems, distribution grids, and microgrids; and substantial progress has been made in the research and development of technology and equipment, construction of demonstration projects, exploration of business models, and construction of standard systems. Up to now, a unified statistical index system and evaluation method standard for new energy storage has not yet been formed domestically or even internationally. The work takes the status quo of the new power system construction of the Hebei South Network as the research object and carries out research on the new energy storage statistical index system and evaluation method. It constructs a new energy storage power station statistical index system centered on five primary indexes: energy efficiency index, reliability index, regulation index, economic index, and environmental protection index; proposes Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP)- coefficient of variation combination assignment method; and evaluates the development level of the new energy storage power station by adopting a comprehensive evaluation model based on the object element topology method. The new energy storage statistical index system and evaluation method are designed to provide a scientific index system and evaluation method for comprehensively monitoring, assessing and measuring the comprehensive performance and effect of new energy storage power plants in the process of operation and development, and optimizing the operation strategy of new energy storage power plants as well as the development and promotion of energy storage technology.
