Abstract In the life cycle of the oriental fruit fly where larvae reside within fruits and adults exhibit high activity, the pupal stage occurs in the soil, closely tied to agricultural soil management. This study investigates the impact of four variables (body orientation, burial depth, soil particle size, and pH) on Bactrocera dorsalis’ physiological preferences, eclosion rates, and pupal stage duration. Notably, body orientation, burial depth, soil texture (particle size), and pH affect eclosion rates. The fruit fly demonstrates a preference for a supine position during eclosion, with average eclosion rates of 97.33%, contrasting with decreases to 78.00% in a head-down position. Soil with mixed particle sizes is detrimental to pupal eclosion, reducing the eclosion rate to 56.67%. And at a pH of 9.98, eclosion rates decrease to 16.67%. These factors significantly influence eclosion rates However, these factors do not significantly alter the duration of the pupal stage, with mean changes not exceeding one day when experimental conditions are modified. These findings suggests that soil manipulations affecting these variables could reduce eclosion rates without compromising the uniformity of adult emergence. This study provides a foundation for environmentally friendly pest control practices and addresses gaps in the pupal stage research of the oriental fruit fly.

Megalurothrips usitatus (Bagnall) feeds on the young tissues of plants, causing wilting and deformity of leaves as well as damage to flowers and fruits, thereby seriously affecting plant yield. Due to its small size and difficulty of control, the species is one of the most important pests in the legume family. To clarify the occurrence and damage pattern of M. usitatus on field crops, a study was conducted using eight different crops as experimental materials, and an age-stage, two-sex life table was constructed. The population density of M. usitatus was the highest on cowpeas (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.), followed by green beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and Vigna cylindrica (Vigna unguiculata subsp. cylindrica (L.) Verdc.) in terms of net reproductive rate and the intrinsic rate of increase. In terms of reproductive capacity, cowpeas and V. cylindrica were more suitable for M. usitatus growth and reproduction, followed by green beans. M. usitatus could develop into adults on courgettes (Cucurbita pepo L.), wax gourds (Benincasa hispida Thunb. Cogn.), Momordica charantia (Momordica charantia L.), and soybeans (Glycine max L. Merr.) but had difficulty reproducing on those plants. Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) was the least suitable for the survival of M. usitatus. Population parameter analysis showed that the cowpea was the most suitable host plant for M. usitatus, followed by green beans and V. cylindrica. M. usitatus had difficulty reproducing on courgette, wax gourd, M. charantia, and soybeans, and feeding on cucumbers inhibited M. usitatus development and reproduction.

The intricate relationships between plants and insects are essential for understanding ecological dynamics. Among these interactions, HIPVs serve as a pivotal defense mechanism. Our findings reveal the highly conserved nature of the GOX gene within the Lepidoptera order, highly expressed in the salivary glands of S. frugiperda, and its role in mediating maize’s defense responses. Notably, salivary GOX activity expression significantly decreases subsequent gene knockout. The presence of GOX in the saliva of S. frugiperda significantly modulates the emission of HIPVs during maize consumption. This research delineates that GOX selectively inhibits the emission of certain green leaf volatiles (GLVs) while concurrently enhancing the release of terpene volatiles. This study unveils a novel mechanism whereby S. frugiperda utilizes GOX proteins in OS to modulate volatile emissions from maize, offering fresh perspectives on the adaptive evolution of phytophagous insects and their interactions with their preferred host plants.

Abstract Background The fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda is a highly destructive agricultural pest that primarily damages maize in China. However, there were no reports of S. frugiperda damage to banana until it was observed on bananas in the wild. This suggested that banana crops may be potential hosts of the pest. To clarify the fitness and potential impact of S. frugiperda on banana, this study analysed the survival and development of S. frugiperda fed on bananas in the laboratory and constructed age-stage and two-sex life tables. Results Larvae of S. frugiperda fed on bananas completed their life cycles and produced fertile offspring, but the larvae had eight instars and presented longer developmental duration, slower population growth, and lower body weight than maize-fed larvae. Furthermore, the banana-fed S. frugiperda had longer adult longevity and preoviposition periods than the maize-fed larvae, while the opposite tendency was observed for oviposition days and egg production. Based on age-stage and two-sex life tables, the survival probability at each stage of S. frugiperda fed on bananas was lower than that of maize-fed larvae, and banana-fed S. frugiperda showed lower reproductive capacity. Conclusions Although banana is not an ideal host for the fall armyworm, it may be colonized by the species in situations in which the population density is high or the preferred host is scarce. Therefore, it is essential to prevent the pest from transferring to bananas and thereby increasing the number of sources of outbreaks. Graphical Abstract

Abstract Background Craniopharyngioma (CP) is a slow-growing, benign tumor of the central nervous system located within the sellar and suprasellar regions. The tumor may extend from the suprasellar region to other areas. CPs are generally believed to originate from squamous remnants of an incompletely involuted craniopharyngeal duct that also develops from Rathke’s pouch. Primary parasellar craniopharyngioma is a relatively rare tumor, and nasal endoscopy, computed tomography, and enhanced magnetic resonance imaging can be applied to better evaluate the invasiveness and characteristics of these tumors. Case presentation We report a case of right parasellar craniopharyngioma in a 49-year-old female patient with a 10-day history of dizziness and blurred vision. Preoperative imaging examination revealed right parasellar space-occupying lesions, and the patient underwent transnasal neuroendoscopic resection of the right parasellar space-occupying lesion. The postoperative pathological result confirmed craniopharyngioma. Conclusions Primary ectopic parasellar craniopharyngioma is a relatively rare tumor, and preoperative imaging examination can assist in the evaluation of tumor characteristics. However, the final diagnosis continues to depend on the histopathological results.

BackgroundThe fully endoscopic supraorbital trans-eyebrow keyhole approach is a technique utilized for the transcranial resection of tuberculum sellae meningioma (TSM). Surgery is the first choice for TSM treatment. This study aimed to summarize and analyze the safety, feasibility, limitations, and technical requirements of the fully endoscopic supraorbital trans-eyebrow keyhole approach for TSM resection.MethodsData of 19 TSM fully endoscopic supraorbital trans-eyebrow keyhole approach resections cases (six and 13 on the left and right eyebrows, respectively) were retrospectively analyzed at the Neurosurgery Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Bengbu Medical College (Bengbu, China) from August 2015 to March 2022.ResultsAll 19 patients were diagnosed with meningioma (World Health Organization grade I), and according to the scope of tumor resection (EOR), 18 patients (94.7%) had gross total resection (GTR), and one patient (5.3%) had near-total resection (NTR). Preoperative chief complaints were symptomatic visual dysfunction (n = 12), headache and dizziness (n = 6), and accidental discovery (n = 1). Postoperative visual function improved in 83.3% of cases (10/12), and headache and dizziness were relieved in 83.3% of cases (5/6 patients). Postoperative intracranial infection occurred in one case and was cured by external drainage of the lumbar cistern and anti-infective treatment. Two cases of frontal lobe injury were discharged after conservative treatment. There was no postoperative olfactory dysfunction, eyelid ptosis, cerebrospinal fluid leakage, or death. There were no reports of disease recurrence or death during the 3-month follow-up at an outpatient clinic or by telephone.ConclusionFully endoscopic TSM resection through the keyhole approach is safe and feasible. It can be used to explore angles that cannot be seen under a microscope and show the true value of endoscopy technology. The endoscopic equipment and technical skills of the surgeon and surgical team are important in this technique.

At present, sexual attractants mainly control insect populations by killing males. However, the effect of sex attractants may be limited by the mating ability of the attracted insects. The Oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel), has a strong reproductive capacity; it brings great losses to agricultural production, which can be controlled by methods using sex attractant methyl eugenol that mainly attracts males. Therefore, we studied the multiple and continuous (as well as consecutive) mating ability of B. dorsalis through behavioral experiments. The results show that male B. dorsalis can mate 11 times on average, with females mating only 1.93 times, and that 10.81% of males mate more than 20 times. The reproductive capacity of male B. dorsalis decreased significantly after four to five instances of continuous mating. In different mating patterns, the reproductive fitness of polyandry is not the highest, rather, interval mating is the best. A limiting factor of the sex attractant effect was revealed in B. dorsalis through behavioral evidence.

BackgroundLangerhans cell sarcoma (LCS) is an extremely rare type of malignant tumor that originates from Langerhans cells (LC). It is characterized by the malignant proliferation and dissemination of LC and is extremely invasive, with rapid progression and a poor prognosis. Treatment includes resection of lesions, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells. However, a unified and optimized treatment plan is lacking, and individualized treatment is accepted.Case presentationWe report an 18-year-old man with intracranial and extracranial communicative LCS that occurred in only the left forehead without metastasis to other regions. Clinical and hematological data were normal. We undertook complete resection of diseased tissue, which was pathologically examined. Staining (hematoxylin and eosin) showed positivity for cluster of differentiation (CD)1a (++), S-100 protein (++), P53 (++), CD68 (+), cyclin D1 (+), cyclin A (+), cyclin B1 (+), IGF2BP3 (+), and Ki-67 (45%–50%). Recurrence or metastasis were not observed after long-term follow-up.ConclusionLCS is a rare malignant tumor, and one that occurs with intracranial and extracranial communication is even rarer. Active adoption of an individualized treatment plan is crucial.

Background: Gliomas are the most common and fatal malignant type of tumor of the central nervous system. RNA post-transcriptional modifications, as a frontier and hotspot in the field of epigenetics, have attracted increased attention in recent years. Among such modifications, methylation is most abundant, and encompasses N6-methyladenosine (m6A), 5-methylcytosine (m5C), N1 methyladenosine (m1A), and 7-methylguanosine (m7G) methylation.Methods: RNA-sequencing data from healthy tissue and low-grade glioma samples were downloaded from of The Cancer Genome Atlas database along with clinical information and mutation data from glioblastoma tumor samples. Forty-nine m6A/m5C/m1A/m7G-related genes were identified and an m6A/m5C/m1A/m7G-lncRNA signature of co-expressed long non-coding RNAs selected. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator Cox regression analysis was used to identify 12 m6A/m5C/m1A/m7G-related lncRNAs associated with the prognostic characteristics of glioma and their correlation with immune function and drug sensitivity analyzed. Furthermore, the Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas dataset was used for model validation.Results: A total of 12 m6A/m5C/m1A/m7G-related genes (AL080276.2, AC092111.1, SOX21-AS1, DNAJC9-AS1, AC025171.1, AL356019.2, AC017104.1, AC099850.3, UNC5B-AS1, AC006064.2, AC010319.4, and AC016822.1) were used to construct a survival and prognosis model, which had good independent prediction ability for patients with glioma. Patients were divided into low and high m6A/m5C/m1A/m7G-LS groups, the latter of which had poor prognosis. In addition, the m6A/m5C/m1A/m7G-LS enabled improved interpretation of the results of enrichment analysis, as well as informing immunotherapy response and drug sensitivity of patients with glioma in different subgroups.Conclusion: In this study we constructed an m6A/m5C/m1A/m7G-LS and established a nomogram model, which can accurately predict the prognosis of patients with glioma and provides direction toward promising immunotherapy strategies for the future.

Purpose: Keyhole craniotomy is a minimally invasive approach for the treatment of anterior circulation aneurysm. In this study, we evaluated the benefits and value of the keyhole approach by analyzing the surgical results in 235 patients with anterior circulation aneurysm treated by the keyhole approach and identifying lessons learned from addressing various complications in this approach.Patients and Methods: This was a retrospective study in a single institution of 235 surgical patients with 248 anterior circulation aneurysms who had the supraorbital keyhole approach (SKA) or pterional keyhole approach (PKA) between January 2016 and January 2021. The modified Rankin Scale (mRS) was used to measure long-term results during follow up.Results: All 235 patients' aneurysms were fully clamped and have not recurred. Among them, 31 (13.2%) had intraoperative aneurysm rupture, 8 (3.4%) had cerebral vascular spasm, and 4 (1.7%) had intraoperative brain edema. There were seven (3.0%) cases of postoperative infection, eight (3.4%) cases of postoperative cerebral infarction, one (0.4%) case of postoperative hematoma, and two (0.8%) patients had some form of cognitive impairment after surgery. Follow up after surgery demonstrated that 189 out of the 235 patients (80.4%) had favorable outcomes (mRS score 0–2), and 43 (18.3%) had poor outcomes (mRS from 3–5). There were three deaths (1.28%).Conclusions: The keyhole approach has a quick postoperative recovery, a mild postoperative response, and a good surgical outcome. Our findings indicate that the keyhole approach is a safe and effective surgical method for the treatment of anterior circulation aneurysm.

Glenea cantor Fabricius (Cerambycidae: Lamiinae) is a pest that devastates urban landscapes and causes ecological loss in southern China and Southeast Asian countries where its main host kapok trees are planted. The olfactory system plays a vital role in mating, foraging, and spawning in G. cantor as an ideal target for pest control. However, the olfactory mechanism of G. cantor is poorly understood at the molecular level. In this study, we first established the antennal transcriptome of G. cantor and identified 76 olfactory-related genes, including 29 odorant binding proteins (OBPs), 14 chemosensory proteins (CSPs), 13 odorant receptors (ORs), 18 ionotropic receptors (IRs) and 2 sensory neuron membrane proteins (SNMPs). Furthermore, the phylogenetic trees of olfactory genes were constructed to study the homology with other species of insects. We also verified the reliability of transcriptome differential genes by qRT-PCR, which indicated the reliability of the transcriptome. Based on the relative expression of 30 d adults, GcanOBP22 and GcanOBP25 were highly expressed not only in the antennae, but also in the wings and legs. In addition, GcanCSP4 was the highest expression on the female antennae at 12 d. These findings laid the foundation for further research on the mechanism of G. cantor olfactory mechanism at the molecular level.

Allotraeus asiaticus Schwarzer and Callidiellum villosulum Fairmaire are repeatedly intercepted in wood and wood products all over the world. As two common stem borers of Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lambert) Hooker, to further understanding of the differences in their living habits, behaviors and the mechanism of insect-host chemical communication, we observed the external morphology, number and distribution of antennal sensilla of A. asiaticus and C. villosulum with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. The results showed that 1st-5th subsegments of the flagellum are spined endoapically in A. asiaticus which is different from the previous report (1st-3rd of the flagellomere). Meanwhile, there were five subsegments on the flagellum of C. villosulum that were clearly specialized as serrated shapes on the 4th-8th flagellomeres. Four types (ten subtypes) of sensilla were both found on the antennae of these two fir longhorn beetles, named Böhm bristle (Bb), sensilla trichodea (ST I and II), sensilla basiconica (SB I, II and III), sensilla chaetica (SCh I, II, III and IV). There is one additional kind of morphological type of sensilla found on the antennae of C. villosulum compared to A. asiaticus which was related to their habit of laying eggs only on dry and injured fir branches, named sensilla campaniformia (SCa). These differences may vary according to their own biological habits. For research purposes, the observed difference in the sensillum distribution and function between the two fir longhorn beetles will greatly facilitate the design of better semiochemical control methods of these insect pests.

Background Insects harbor a myriad of microorganisms, many of which can affect the sex ratio and manipulate the reproduction of the host. Leptocybe invasa is an invasive pest that causes serious damage to eucalyptus plantations, and the thelytokous parthenogenesis, low temperature resistance, protection in galls, generation overlap and small body of L. invasa contribute to its rapid invasion and population growth. However, the endosymbiotic bacterial composition, abundance and sex differences of L. invasa remain unclear. Therefore, this research aimed to identify the bacterial communities in L. invasa adults and compare them between the sexes of L. invasa lineage B. Results The Illumina MiSeq platform was used to compare bacterial community composition between females and males of L. invasa by sequencing the V3–V4 region of the 16S ribosomal RNA gene. A total of 1,320 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were obtained. These OTUs were subdivided into 24 phyla, 71 classes, 130 orders, 245 families and 501 genera. At the genus level, the dominant bacteria in females and males were Rickettsia and Rhizobium, respectively. Conclusion The endosymbiotic bacteria of L. invasa females and males were highly diverse. There were differences in the bacterial community of L. invasa between sexes, and the bacterial diversity in male specimens was greater than that in female specimens. This study presents a comprehensive comparison of bacterial communities in L. invasa and these data will provide an overall view of the bacterial community in both sexes of L. invasa with special attention on sex-related bacteria.

Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel), as one of the most notorious and destructive invasive agricultural pests in the world, causes damage to over 250 different types of fruits and vegetables throughout tropical and subtropical areas. PacBio single-molecule real-time (SMRT) sequencing was used to generate the full-length transcriptome data of B. dorsalis. A total of 40,319,890 subreads (76.6 Gb, clean reads) were generated, including 535,241 circular consensus sequences (CCSs) and 386,916 full-length non-concatemer reads (FLNCs). Transcript cluster analysis of the FLNC reads revealed 22,780 high-quality reads (HQs). In total, 12,274 transcripts were functionally annotated based on four different databases. A total of 1978 SSR loci were distributed throughout 1714 HQ transcripts, of which 1926 were complete SSRs and 52 were complex SSRs. Among the total SSR loci, 2–3 nucleotide repeats were dominant, occupying 83.62%, of which di- and tri- nucleotide repeats were 39.38% and 44.24%, respectively. We detected 105 repeat motifs, of which AT/AT (50.19%), AC/GT (39.15%), CAA/TTG (32.46%), and ACA/TGT (10.86%) were the most common in di- and tri-nucleotide repeats. The repeat SSR motifs were 12–190 bp in length, and 1638 (88.02%) were shorter than 20 bp. According to the randomly selected microsatellite sequence, 80 pairs of primers were designed, and 174 individuals were randomly amplified by PCR using primers. The number of primers that had amplification products with clear bands and showed good polymorphism came to 41, indicating that this was a feasible way to explore SSR markers from the transcriptomic data of B. dorsalis. These results lay a foundation for developing highly polymorphic microsatellites for researching the functional genomics, population genetic structure, and genetic diversity of B. dorsalis.

Epipedocera atra is a common species of Epipedocera Chevrolat which distributed in South China and some countries in Southeast Asia. The complete mitochondria genome of E. atra was 15,662 bp in length, with 37 genes, including 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNA genes (tRNAs), and 2 rRNA genes (rRNAs). The nucleotide composition was highly A + T biased, accounting for 70.34% of the whole mitogenome. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that E. atra had a close relationship with Xylotrechus grayii White.

The complete mitogenome sequence of an Asian longicorn beetle Dorysthenes granulosus (Thomson 1860) was sequenced. The 15,858 bp long genome has the standard metazoan complement of 38 genes. These genes contain 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, and 1 control region. The nucleotide composition of the D. granulosus mitogenome was A: 39.5%, T: 31.7%, G: 10.9%, C: 17.9%. The A＋T content was 71.2%, showing strong AT skew. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that D. granulosus have sister relationship with Dorysthenes paradoxus.

These genes contain 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, and 1 control region. The nucleotide composition of the G. cantor mitogenome was A: 39.4%, T: 37.7%, G: 8.9%, C: 14.0%. The A + T content is 77.1%, showing strong AT skew. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that G. cantor have sister relationship with Thyestilla gebleri.

Camellia spp., which are self-incompatible plants, are some of the most important woody species producing edible oil in Southeast Asian countries. However, the demand for camellia oil currently exceeds the supply due to low product yields that have resulted from a decrease in pollination services. Although Camellia osmantha, C. vietnamensis, and C. oleifera are cultivated in South China, little is known about the correspondence between pollinator abundance and pollinator services for this plant genus. In this study, the diversity, daily activity patterns, and pollination effectiveness of insects visiting C. osmantha, C. vietnamensis and C. oleifera were investigated. A total of 24 species, belonging to four orders and 11 families, of visiting insects were identified. Apis cerana cerana Fabricius, Vespa bicolor Fabricius, V. velutina Lepeletier, V. ducalis Smith, and Phytomia zonata Fabricius were the dominant pollinators. The daily activity peaks of the five visiting insects were between 10:00 and 14:00, which may have been related to the pattern of floral resource production (particularly nectar). Cross-pollination by insects significantly increased the fruit production rates of C. osmantha, C. vietnamensis, and C. oleifera. Therefore, the wild bees and flies that pollinate wild and cultivated Camellia plants should be protected in South China.

Effects of beta-cypermethrin, abamectin, chlorpyrifos, thiamethoxam and bisultap on toxicity against 1st-6th instar larvae in Phauda flammans Walker (Lepidoptera: Zygaenidae) were tested using the leaf-dipping method. Meanwhile, effects of these pesticides on detoxifying and protective enzymes in P. flammans larvae were also measured. Results showed that the LC50 value of beta-cypermethrin, abamectin, chlorpyrifos, thiamethoxam and bisultap against P. flammans larvae were related to the instar and pesticide. Control efficacy of beta-cypermethrin was the best among of these pesticides, and the LC50 value of which against 1st instar larvae in P. flammans reached 2.038 mg/L at 8 h after treatment, and reached 6.416-48.764 mg/L for 2nd-6th instar larvae at 24 h after treatment. Control efficacy of abamectin was less than beta-cypermethrin, and the LC50 value of which against 1st instar larvae in P. flammans reached 241.953 mg/L at 8 h after treatment, and reached 19.285-266.207 mg/L for 2nd-6th instar larvae at 24 h after treatment. Control efficacy of chlorpyrifos, thiamethoxam and bisultap was less than the first two pesticides. Changes of detoxifying and protective enzymes in P. flammans larvae were related to the kinds of enzyme and its sensitivity to pesticide after treatment with different pesticides. Compared with control, effect of beta-cypermethrin on Carboxylesterase (CarE) was the most obvious than other four pesticides; activity of glutathione-s transferase (GST) was inhibited by abamectin, while the trend was in the opposite direction for other four pesticides; activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) was promoted by beta-cypermethrin and chlorpyrifos, and inhibited by abamectin and bisultap; Activity of catalase (CAT) was promoted by beta-cypermethrin, chlorpyrifos and bisultap, inhibited the influence of promotion by thiamethoxam. Results suggested that P. flammans larvae could be effectively controlled by betacypermethrin 10 mg/L and abamectin 25 mg/L with alternate spray, which could prevent the resistance to pesticides in this pest.
