Previous studies have demonstrated that pure transanal endoscopic surgery is safe and feasible in the treatment of rectal cancer. However, the role of pure transanal endoscopic colectomy in ascending colon cancer (ACC) treatment has not been evaluated. We report a case of transanal endoscopic surgery for ACC. A 35-year-old woman was treated for ACC, using a transanal endoscopic surgery device as the operation platform, and pure transanal endoscopic right hemicolectomy without transabdominal assistance was safely performed. An instrument suture, side-to-side, ileocolic anastomosis was performed. Operative time was 245 min and intraoperative blood loss was 60 ml. The patient recovered well from the surgery. Compared with the traditional approach, this approach was less invasive and resulted in satisfactory outcomes and cosmesis (no scar). Application of pure transanal endoscopic colectomy without abdominal assistance to ACC appears to be feasible and safe.

In this study, a facile hydrothermal method was developed to synthesize Pt-on-Pd supported on reduced graphene oxide (Pt-on-Pd/RGO) hybrids. Because of the synergistic effect between Pt-on-Pd and RGO, the obtained Pt-on-Pd/RGO had superior peroxidase-mimic activities in H2O2 reduction and TMB oxidation. The reaction medium was optimized and a sensing approach for H2O2 was developed with a linear range from 0.98 to 130.7 μM of H2O2. In addition, the characteristic of electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol was investigated. The peak current density value, j(f), for the Pt-on-Pd/RGO hybrid (328 mA mg(Pt)(-1)) was about 1.85 fold higher than that of commercial Pt black (177 mA mg(Pt)(-1)) and, also, more durable electrocatalytic activity could be obtained. For the first time, the dual-functional Pt-on-Pd/RGO with peroxidase-mimic activity and an enhanced electrocatalytic oxidation characteristic was reported.

Natural dyes extracted from the flower of Bauhinia blakeana Dunn were immobilized in chitosan to prepare a colorimetric pH sensing film, which color changed from red to green in the pH range 2.2–9.0. The UV–vis spectra of the natural dyes in solution and in the sensing film were studied. The characteristics of the pH sensing film, including response time, reproducibility, reversibility, stability toward light and the storage time, were investigated. Since pH value of a pork or fish sample concerns its freshness, the pH sensing film is expected to provide a convenient, non-destructive and visual method to help the estimation of pork and fish spoilage in ambient conditions.

A series of acrylic oligomer which can undergo self-initiation under UV irradiation were synthesized by Michael addition of acetylacetone (acac) with multi-functional acrylates using diazabicycloundecene as catalyst. GC-MS and proton NMR were employed to study the photolysis mechanism of model molecule which was prepared from acac and ethyl acrylate. The β-diketone moiety attached to a fully substituted carbon atom was photoscissile and prone to produce alkyl free radicals by losing acetyl free radical. Polymerization of the acrylated β-diketone-containing oligomers can be thus efficiently triggered regardless of solely irradiated under UV light or blended with pure trimethylolpropane triacrylate. As determined with photo-DSC, the acrylated β-diketone-containing oligomers photopolymerized more slowly than the traditional system of trimethylolpropane triacrylate containing Darocur 1173 at the early stage, but reached a higher final conversion. The rheology measurement showed that the synthesized acrylated β-diketone-containing oligomers exhibited shear thinning property. POLYM. ENG. Organic–inorganic hybrid UV-curable coatings were synthesized through blending UV-curable components and stabilized titania sol prepared via a sol–gel process of tetrabutyl titanate (TBT) with three different stabilizers, acetylacetone (Acac), isopropyl tri(dioctyl)pyrophosphato titanate coupling agent (TTPO) and a polymerizable organic phosphoric acid (MAP). The size and the dispersion of titania particle in the UV-cured organic matrix were dominated by the properties of these stabilizers. A cured hybrid film with titania particle size around 20 nm was obtained when TTPO was utilized as protection agent for the sol. It is interesting that the hardness and flexibility of the photocured hybrid films were improved simultaneously, in contrast to results with neat organic UV-curable formulations. The photoinduced solution polymerization of 4-methacryloyl-1,2,2,6,6-pentamethyl-piperidinyl (MPMP), used as a reactive hindered amine piperidinol derivative, was performed. The obtained MPMP homopolymer had a very narrow molecular weight distribution (1.06–1.39) according to gel permeation chromatography. The number-average and weight-average molecular weights increased linearly with the monomer conversion, this being characteristic of controlled/living free-radical polymerizations. Electron spin resonance signals were detected in the MPMP homopolymer and in a polymer mixture solution, and they were assigned to nitroxide radicals, which were bound to the polymer chains and persisted at a level of 10−9 mol/L during the polymerization. Instead of the addition of mediated nitroxide radicals such as 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-piperidinyl-1-oxy (TEMPO), those radicals (>NO ·) were formed in situ during the photopolymerization of MPMP, and so the reaction mechanism was understood as being similar to that of TEMPO-mediated controlled/living free-radical polymerization. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
