Methamphetamine (METH) is a highly abused substance on a global scale and has the capacity to elicit toxicity within the central nervous system. The neurotoxicity induced by METH encompasses neuronal degeneration and cellular demise within the substantia nigra-striatum and hippocampus. Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), a constituent of propolis, is a diminutive compound that demonstrates antioxidative and anti-inflammatory characteristics. Numerous investigations have demonstrated the safeguarding effects of CAPE in various neurodegenerative ailments. Our hypothesis posits that CAPE may exert a neuroprotective influence on METH-induced neurotoxicity via specific mechanisms. In order to validate the hypothesis, a series of experimental techniques including behavioral tests, immunofluorescence labeling, RNA sequencing, and western blotting were employed to investigate the neurotoxic effects of METH and the potential protective effects of CAPE. The results of our study demonstrate that CAPE effectively ameliorates cognitive memory deficits and anxiety symptoms induced by METH in mice. Furthermore, CAPE has been observed to attenuate the upregulation of neurotoxicity-associated proteins that are induced by METH exposure and also reduced the loss of hippocampal neurons in mice. Moreover, transcriptomics analysis was conducted to determine alterations in gene expression within the hippocampus of mice. Subsequently, bioinformatics analysis was employed to investigate the divergent outcomes and identify potential key genes. Interferon-stimulated gene 15 (ISG15) was successfully identified and confirmed through RT-qPCR, western blotting, and immunofluorescence techniques. Our research findings unequivocally demonstrated the neuroprotective effect of CAPE against METH-induced neurotoxicity, with ISG15 may have an important role in the underlying protective mechanism. These results offer novel perspectives on the treatment of METH-induced neurotoxicity.

This study introduces a cutting-edge solution to improve safety in substations through a real-time anti-maloperation system utilizing the IEC 61850 framework. Conventional anti-maloperation systems, largely microcomputer-based, face challenges including offline operational limits and cumbersome setup procedures, which compromise their efficiency and real-time functionality. This research explores these issues and demonstrates how the IEC 61850 standard, particularly its GOOSE messaging, can overcome these hurdles. Our analysis of the proposed real-time system showcases its superiority in functionality and technical advantages compared to existing solutions. We provide a comprehensive examination of its design, locking mechanisms, and deployment tactics, offering solutions to the drawbacks of traditional systems. By incorporating IEC 61850 and GOOSE messaging, the system enhances operational efficiency and ensures continuous monitoring and control, drastically improving the reliability and efficiency of substation anti-maloperation strategies. This novel methodology represents a significant leap forward in substation automation and safety management, offering a forward-looking perspective on safeguarding substation operations.

Abstract Age estimation based on the mineralized morphology of teeth is one of the important elements of forensic anthropology. To explore the most suitable age estimation protocol for adolescents in the South China population, 1477 panoramic radiograph images of people aged 2–18 years in the South were collected and staged by the Demirjian mineralization staging method. The dental ages were estimated using the parameters of the Demirjian and Willems. Mathematical optimization and machine learning optimization were also performed in the data processing process in an attempt to obtain a more accurate model. The results show that the Willems method was more accurate in the dental age estimation of the southern China population and the model can be further optimized by reassigning the model through a nonintercept regression method. The machine learning model presented excellent results in terms of the efficacy comparison results with the traditional mathematical model, and the machine learning model under the boosting framework, such as gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT), significantly reduced the error in dental age estimation compared to the traditional mathematical method. This machine learning processing method based on traditional estimation data can effectively reduce the error of dental age estimation while saving arithmetic power. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of the GBDT algorithm in optimizing forensic age estimation models and provides a reference for other regions to use this parameter for age estimation model establishment, and the lightweight nature of machine learning offers the possibility of widespread forensic anthropological age estimation.

IntroductionHand hygiene is a cost-effective measure to reduce healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) in healthcare facilities. The impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on hand hygiene performance (HHP) provided evidence for targeted hand hygiene intervention measures.MethodsThis study evaluated the HHP rate in a tertiary hospital before and after the COVID-19 outbreak. HHP was checked by infection control doctors or nurses every day, and they inputted the HHP rate to the full-time infection control staff every week. A random examination of HHP was conducted by a confidential worker every month. The HHP of healthcare workers (HCWs) was monitored in the outpatient department, inpatient ward, and operating room from January 2017 to October 2022. The influence of COVID-19 prevention and control strategies on HHP was elucidated by analyzing the results of HHP during the study period.ResultsThe average HHP rate of HCWs was 86.11% from January 2017 to October 2022. The HHP rate of HCWs after the COVID-19 pandemic was statistically significantly higher than that before the pandemic (P < 0.001). The HHP rate was the highest (93.01%) in September 2022 when the local epidemic occurred. Among the different occupation categories, medical technicians showed the highest HHP rate (89.10%). The HHP rate was the highest after contact with body fluids or blood of patients (94.47%).ConclusionThe HHP rate of HCWs in our hospital showed an increasing trend in the recent 6 years, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the increase was most obvious during the local epidemic.

In this paper, a prescribed performance adaptive event-triggered consensus control method is developed for a class of multiagent systems with the consideration of input dead zone and saturation. In practical engineering applications, systems are inevitably suffered from input saturation. In addition, input dead zone is widely existing. As the larger signal is limited and the smaller signal is difficult to effectively operate, system efficacious input encounters unknown magnitude limitations, which seriously impact system control performance and even lead to system instability. Furthermore, when constrained multiagent systems are required to converge quickly, the followers would achieve it with drastic and quick variation of states, which may violate the constraints and even cause security problems. To address those problems, an adaptive event-triggered consensus control is proposed. By constructing the transform function and the barrier Lyapunov function, while state constrained is guaranteed, multiagent systems quickly converge with prescribed performance. Finally, some examples are adopted to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed control method.

Abstract Background Recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-pa) is the first-line drug for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke, and can lead to some complications.There were rare reports of death due to acute pulmonary edema during rt-pa thrombolysis treatment. Case presentation This study reports a 30-year-old man was diagnosed with acute ischemic stroke and underwent rt-pa thrombolytic therapy. Finally he died despite active rescue. Conclusions The autopsy revealed that he died of acute pulmonary edema. This case suggests that it is necessary to pay close attention to the changes of vital signs during thrombolysis and be aware of possibility of pulmonary edema during thrombolysis.

Microplastics (MPs) are a new kind of environmental pollutant that has attracted extensive attention in recent years. MPs can be ingested by multiple organisms and mainly accumulate in the intestine. However, there is still little known about the toxic effects of MPs on humans. Here, we chose the male adult mice as the research model, which were exposed to 2 µm polyvinyl chloride (PVC) MPs at a concentration of 100 mg/kg for consecutive 60 days, to study the toxicity of PVC-MPs. The changes in gut histology, enzymatic biomarkers, the intestinal microbiome, and metabolomic responses were monitored in mice. The results displayed that the PVC-MPs reduced intestinal mucus secretion and increased intestinal permeability. Moreover, PVC-MPs exposure decreased mRNA expression levels of colonic mucus secretion-related genes, indicating dysfunction of intestinal mucus secretion after exposure to PVC-MPs. With regard to the gut microbiota, high throughput sequencing of the full-length 16S rRNA gene sequencing indicated 15 and 17 kinds of gut microbes changed markedly after PVC-MPs exposure at the genus and species level, respectively. Furthermore, marked alterations in the gut microbiome and fecal metabolic profiles were observed, most of which were related to intestinal injury and barrier dysfunction. These results show that exposure to PVC-MPs leads to intestinal injury and changes gut microbiome composition and metabolome profiles, thus the health risk of PVC-MPs to animals needs more concern. This study helps to provide a new idea about the health risk of PVC-MPs to humans.

In this study, we aimed to clarify the distribution and dynamics of water in the Xudou 20 soybean cultivar post-germination after culturing plants with various concentrations of 6-benzylaminopurine (6-BA). Low-field nuclear magnetic resonance and magnetic resonance imaging (LF-NMR/MRI), as well as principal component analysis (PCA), were used for the investigation. Results showed that low concentrations of 6-BA promoted soybean germination and high concentrations inhibited soybean germination, with 5 mg/l of 6-BA producing the most optimal conditions for growth. Moreover, the T22 determination of weakly bound water increased with increasing 6-BA concentration, and the PCA effectively distinguished soybeans cultured at different 6-BA concentrations. This study provides a method for the rapid detection of 6-BA concentration in bean sprouts and provides theoretical support and bean sprout quality assessment.

Objective: To systematically review the efficacy and safety of oral Acetaminophen for premature infants with patent ductus arteriosus (PDA).Methods: Databases including Ovid, EMbase, Pubmed, The Cochrane Library, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINHAL), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese Biomedical Database (CBM), WanFang Data, China Science and Technology Journal Database were searched to collect the randomized controlled trials (RCTs) about Acetaminophen for premature infants with PDA from inception to January 1, 2021. Quality assessment was performed through bias risk evaluation according to the Cochrane Handbook 5.1.0, and then the homogeneous studies were analyzed using Revman 5.4 software.Results: A total of 16 RCTs were included, which were divided into for four subgroups: subgroup I (oral acetaminophen vs. oral ibuprofen, 13 RCTs), subgroup II (oral acetaminophen vs. intravenous indomethacin, 1 RCT), subgroup III (oral acetaminophen vs intravenous ibuprofen, 1 RCT), and subgroup IV (oral acetaminophen vs intravenous placebo, 1 RCT). In subgroup I, There was no significant difference in the ductal closure rate after the first course of drug administration [typical relative risk (RR) 0.97, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.90 to 1.05], the accumulated ductal closure rate after two course of treatment (RR 0.96, 95% CI 0.91–1.02), and mortality (RR 1.06, 95% CI 0.75–1.49) between treatment with oral acetaminophen versus oral ibuprofen (p > 0.05); compared with oral ibuprofen, oral acetaminophen was associated with a significant reduction in the incidence of gastrointestinal bleeding/stool occult blood positive (RR 0.51, 95% CI 0.32 to 0.82)and oliguria (RR 0.62, 95% CI 0.42–0.91) (p < 0.05).Conclusion: The meta analysis approves the facts that there is no significant difference in the efficacity in premature infants with PDA between oral acetaminophen and buprofen or indometacin, but compared to ibuprofen, oral acetaminophen may decrease the incidence of oliguria and gastrointestinal bleeding. More reliable conclusions should be made through large-size, multi-center, well-designed RCTs.

This study focuses on the regulation demand of the cascade gates group water diversion project during the flow adjustment period. A multi-objective optimization regulation model was coupled with the one-dimensional hydrodynamic model and the multi-objective genetic algorithm. Gate opening was used as the decision variable to generate the local operation-oriented cascade gates group regulation scheme. This study considered the Shijiazhuang to Beijing section of the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project. The optimal operation model has a better control effect than the conventional control method, and the number of gate operations was reduced by 23.38%. The average water level deviation was less than 0.15 m when the feedforward control time of the cascade gates group water diversion project was not more than 24 h. The basic mechanism of maintaining water level stability during the short-term scheduling of the cascade gates group water diversion project makes use of the volume capacity, or the space of the channel pool adjacent to the water demand change position, in advance. The multi-objective optimal regulation model of the cascade gates group that was constructed in this study can quickly generate regulation schemes for different application scenarios.

Methamphetamine (MA) is a widely abused psychoactive drug that primarily damages the nervous system. However, the involvement of MA in the survival of microglia remains poorly understood. CCAAT-enhancer binding protein (C/EBP-β) is a transcription factor and an important regulator of cell apoptosis. Lipocalin2 (lcn2) is a known apoptosis inducer and is involved in many cell death processes. We hypothesized that C/EBP-β is involved in MA-induced lcn2-mediated microglial apoptosis. To test this hypothesis, we measured the protein expression of C/EBP-β after MA treatment and evaluated the effects of silencing C/EBP-β or lcn2 on MA-induced apoptosis in BV-2 cells and the mouse striatum after intrastriatal MA injection. MA exposure increased the expression of C/EBP-β and stimulated the lcn2-mediated modulation of apoptosis. Moreover, silencing the C/EBP-β-dependent lcn2 upregulation reversed the MA-induced microglial apoptosis. The in vivo relevance of these findings was confirmed in mouse models, which demonstrated that the microinjection of anti-C/EBP-β into the striatum ameliorated the MA-induced decrease survival of microglia. These findings provide a new insight regarding the specific contributions of C/EBP-β-lcn2 to microglial survival in the context of MA abuse.

Methamphetamine (METH), an extremely and widely abused illicit drug, can cause serious nervous system damage and social problems. Previous research has shown that METH use causes dopaminergic neuron apoptosis and astrocyte-related neuroinflammation. However, the relationship of astrocytes and neurons in METH-induced neurotoxicity remains unclear. We hypothesized that chemokine interleukin (IL) eight released by astrocytes and C-X-C motif chemokine receptor 1 (CXCR1) in neurons are involved in METH-induced neuronal apoptosis. We tested our hypothesis by examining the changes of CXCR1 in SH-SY5Y cells and in the brain of C57BL/6 mice exposed to METH by western blotting and immunolabeling. We also determined the effects of knocking down CXCR1 expression with small interfering ribonucleic acid (siRNA) on METH-exposed SH-SY5Y cells. Furthermore, we detected the expression levels of IL-8 and the nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) pathway in U87MG cells and then co-cultured the two cell types to determine the role of CXCR1 and IL-8 in neuronal apoptosis. Our results indicated that METH exposure increased CXCR1 expression both in vitro and in vivo, with the effects obtained in vitro being dose-dependent. Silencing of CXCR1 expression with siRNAs reduced the expression of cleaved caspase-3, cleaved poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP), and other related proteins. In addition, IL-8 expression and release were increased in METH-exposed U87MG cells, which is regulated by NF-κB pathway. Neuronal apoptosis was attenuated by siCXCR1 after METH treatment in the co-cultured cells, which can be reversed after exposure to recombinant IL-8. These results demonstrate that CXCR1 plays an important role in neuronal apoptosis induced by METH and may be a potential target for METH-induced neurotoxicity therapy.Highlights–Methamphetamine exposure upregulated the expression of CXCR1.–Methamphetamine exposure increased the expression of interleukin-8 through nuclear factor-kappa B pathway.–Activation of CXCR1 by interleukin-8 induces an increase in methamphetamine-related neuronal apoptosis.

The Middle Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (MRP) is an important water supply for 20 large cities and 100 counties in Northern China. However, since 2016, the growth of large filamentous algae clusters has threatened the safety of the main canal water supply and water quality. In this study, a field investigation, monitoring, and hydrodynamic simulation were performed to analyze the hydrodynamic habitat conditions in areas with vigorous algae growth and establish a relationship between the hydrodynamic habitat conditions of the main canal and the growth, distribution, and correlation of macrobenthic algae in the main canal. The results showed that: (1) algae zones in the main canal are more likely to appear along curves, and the largest algal zone was at the front of the large curved section; (2) the length of the algae growth zone is related to the flow rate; and (3) a lower flow velocity in the main canal facilitates faster growth of an algae zone. This study provides specific and effective suggestions for the key prevention and control positions, which has important guidance on improving the efficiency of algae control in the main canal.

Carbon nanotube-based conductive polymer composites (CPC) showed great potentials for self-sensing and in situ structural health monitoring systems. Prediction of the long-term performance for such materials would be a meaningful topic for engineering design. In this work, the changing behavior of the long-term resistance of a multi-walled carbon nanotubes/epoxy resin composite gasket was studied under different temperature and loading conditions. Glass transition strongly influenced the resistance behavior of the composite during the thermal creep process. Similar to classical Kelvin−Voigt creep model, a model considering both the destruction and recovery processes of the conductive network inside the CPC was established. The long-term resistance variation can be predicted based on the model, and the results provided here may serve as a useful guide for further design of smart engineering structural health monitoring systems.

Background and Aims: Morphological awareness is an essential ability for successful reading. This study aimed to explore the contribution of morphological awareness to reading comprehension (RC) in Chinese. Particularly, this study sought to determine whether the relation between morphological awareness and RC differs across various facets of morphological awareness (homophone awareness, homonym awareness, and compounding awareness), grades, or ability levels. Samples and Methods: A total of 148 Chinese students were evaluated on a battery of tests from third to sixth grade. Multiple regression analyses were used to examine the unique roles of homophone, homonym, and compounding awareness on RC in different grades. Quantile regression analyses were conducted to investigate the more or less influences of facets of morphological awareness on RC across the ability range. Results: A series of multiple and quantile regressions revealed that: (1) compounding awareness rather than homophone awareness and homonym awareness, directly and uniquely explained the development of RC; (2) the effect of compounding awareness on RC increased with grade level; and (3) the contribution of compounding awareness to RC decreased as children move from poor to better readers. Conclusions: The findings reveal a developmental shift in the relation between morphological awareness and RC, as well as clarify when and for whom to enhance which facet of morphological awareness is particularly important.

BACKGROUND: The genetic polymorphisms of glutathione S-transferase (GSTs) have been suspected to be related to the development of lung cancer while the current results are conflicting, especially in the Chinese population. METHODS: Data on genetic polymorphisms of glutathione S-transferase Mu 1 (GSTM1) from 68 studies, glutathione S-transferase theta 1 (GSTT1) from 17 studies and GSTM1-GSTT1 from 8 studies in the Chinese population were reanalyzed on their association with lung cancer risk. Odds ratios (OR) were pooled using forest plots. 9 subgroups were all or partly performed in the subgroup analyses. The Galbraith plot was used to identify the heterogeneous records. Potential publication biases were detected by Begg's and Egger's tests. RESULTS: 71 eligible studies were identified after screening of 1608 articles. The increased association between two vital GSTs genetic polymorphisms and lung cancer risk was detected by random-effects model based on a comparable heterogeneity. Subgroup analysis showed a significant relationship between squamous carcinoma (SC), adenocarcinoma (AC) or small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) and GSTM1 null genotype, as well as SC or AC and GSTT1 null genotype. Additionally, smokers with GSTM1 null genotype had a higher lung cancer risk than non-smokers. Our cumulative meta-analysis demonstrated a stable and reliable result of the relationship between GSTM1 null genotype and lung cancer risk. The coronavirus disease 2019 （COVID-19） has been a global epidemic for more than three years, causing more than 6.9 million deaths. COVID-19 has the clinical characteristics of strong infectivity and long incubation period, and can cause multi-system damage, mainly lung damage, clinical symptoms of acute respiratory distress syndrome （ARDS） and systemic multiple organ damage. The SARS-CoV-2 virus is still constantly mutating. At present, there is no global consensus on the pathological changes of COVID-19 associated deaths and even no consensus on the criteria for determining the cause of death. The investigation of the basic pathological changes and progression of the disease is helpful to guide the clinical treatment and the development of therapeutic drugs. This paper reviews the autopsy reports and related literature published worldwide from February 2020 to June 2023, with a clear number of autopsy cases and corresponding pathological changes of vital organs as the inclusion criteria. A total of 1 111 autopsy cases from 65 papers in 18 countries are included. Pathological manifestations and causes of death are classified and statistically analyzed, common pathological changes of COVID-19 are summarized, and analytical conclusions are drawn, suggesting that COVID-19 infection can cause life-threatening pathological changes in vital organs. On the basis of different health levels of infected groups, the direct cause of death is mainly severe lung damage and secondary systemic multiple organ failure.

Background BRCA1 and BRCA2 (BRCA) mutation carriers face a high lifetime risk of developing ovarian cancer. Oral contraceptives are protective in this population; however, the impact of other types of contraception (e.g. intrauterine devices, implants, injections) is unknown. We undertook a matched case-control study to evaluate the relationship between type of contraception and risk of ovarian cancer among women with BRCA mutations. Methods A total of 1733 matched pairs were included in this analysis. Women were matched according to year of birth, date of study entry, country of residence, BRCA mutation type and history of breast cancer. Detailed information on hormonal, reproductive and lifestyle exposures were collected from a routinely administered questionnaire. Conditional logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) associated with each contraceptive exposure.
